At Kehilla we’re co-creating a loving community that reaches for joy, shared liberation, and justice, rooted in Jewish spiritual teachings and practice, and sustained by interdependence and mutual care, in the Lisjan Ohlone territory of Huchiun.
Kehilla is a Synagogue for Ceasefire. We support an immediate ceasefire by all sides; release of all hostages, the unrestricted entry of humanitarian assistance into Gaza; the restoration of food, water, electricity, and medical supplies to Gaza; the respect for international law; and a resolution that protects the security of all innocent civilians. »

The total value of these commitments is over $1.6 million dollars. These are contributions that will come in over time, helping to grow Kehilla’s endowment when we are no longer here. We’d love to have you join us in helping to secure Kehilla’s future for generations to come. You don’t have to be wealthy to leave a legacy to Kehilla – in fact, this is a way to give Kehilla money when you can’t use it anymore. There are lots of ways to do this; some are as simple as naming Kehilla as a beneficiary of your IRA, 401(k) or other retirement savings fund. That takes only a few minutes, and often can be done online. Another way is to designate Kehilla as one of the beneficiaries of your life insurance policy. Even your bank account has a place for you to designate who should get your savings when you die. If you have a trust or will, you can add Kehilla as a beneficiary of your estate through those documents. You can specify an amount, or you can specify a percentage of your estate. You can even specify that Kehilla gets money only after your children do. To learn more about the Legacy Society , email Executive Director Samm Azen at

This policy outlines our current guidelines to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and other potentially contagious illnesses. These guidelines are subject to change based on evolving public health recommendations and local conditions. 1. Staying Home When Ill: Anyone experiencing any symptoms of a potentially contagious illness (including, but not limited to, fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, fatigue, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea) should remain at home and participate in Kehilla events virtually when possible. 2. Masking at In-Person Events and Services: Indoor Masking Requirement: All attendees of in-person Kehilla events or services are expected to be masked indoors . Acceptable Masks: Required masks include N95, KN95, KF94, or comparable high-filtration masks . Cloth masks alone are not sufficient. Exception: Saturday Morning B’Mitzvah Services: B’Mitzvah families are given the choice to either follow Kehilla’s existing masking policy (as outlined above) or to make masking optional on the Shabbat morning of their ceremony. Families who choose optional masking are guided by Kehilla’s Protocols & Expectations For Mask-Optional B’mitzvah Services The masking status for individual B’Mitzvah services will be announced in advance of the service. Medical Exemption: Individuals who are medically unable to wear a mask are exempt from this requirement. They are invited to inform Kehilla staff in advance to avoid any unnecessary requests for masking during the event. Masking for Children and Those Medically Unable to Wear High-Filtration Masks: People under 12 or those medically unable to wear an N95/KN95/KF94 but able to wear a less restrictive mask may wear any well-fitting mask . Double masking (wearing a cloth mask over a surgical mask) is strongly recommended in these circumstances. Children under 4 years old may go without masks. 3. COVID-19 Testing: We encourage everyone to take a COVID-19 test before attending in-person events at Kehilla, particularly those anticipated to have over 50 people. If you test positive for COVID-19, please stay home to protect the health and well-being of others. 4. Eating and Drinking: Eating and drinking are permitted indoors only in designated rooms . Outdoor eating options will be made available whenever feasible. 5. Masking Outside of Events and in Meetings: When in the Kehilla building but not actively participating in an event or service , masking is optional . In meetings held at Kehilla, participants can decide amongst themselves whether to mask. We encourage respectful communication and consideration for individual comfort levels. 6. Vaccination and Boosters: We encourage everyone to stay current on their COVID-19 vaccinations and booster doses when eligible and possible, as this remains a crucial tool in preventing severe illness. 7. Ventilation and Air Filtration: Kehilla will maintain maximum air filtration and ventilation throughout the building. Doors and windows will be opened whenever weather and safety conditions permit to increase airflow. 8. Rentals: Renters using rooms at Kehilla may determine their own masking policy within the spaces that they are renting. Kehilla will communicate these policies to event attendees when applicable. 9. Additional Protocols: Specific Kehilla programs or activities may institute additional public health protocols based on the nature of the event and current public health conditions. These will be communicated to participants in advance. Thank you for your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe and healthy environment for our Kehilla community. We appreciate your understanding and commitment to these guidelines. 1300 Grand Avenue, Piedmont CA 94610 | privacy policy © 2026 Kehilla Community Synagogue, All Rights Reserved (510) 547-2424 Search Join our Mailing list! In October 2022, five long-time committee leads kicked off the newspaper with a PDF format. Then, in December 2022, it was taken on by a new team of editors and put online as Committee Connection . Read more about our Origin Story on the About page . Although our Committee Connection team has an admittedly tiny beat, we approach our work with news values and edit pieces for readability and consistency. We want to help Kehilla’s many social justice committees, community care crews, and affinity groups get the word out about what they’re up to. We also hope to help congregants find committee work that interests them via a quick list of all the member-led groupings on our Teams page . [email protected] Learn more about conversion » Weddings / Kiddushin Whenever two beloveds get married, the celebration extends beyond the couple — to the people closest to them, to their community, and in Jewish tradition, to the whole world. We are blessed to share in your simcha (celebration), and to accompany you through this amazing life transition. One of our rabbis or our hazzan/cantor will guide you through the process of moving from “single” to “married,” including counseling, ceremony planning and preparation, officiating, and the option to be recognized and celebrated during a Shabbat aufruf – a blessing with the Kehilla community. We work closely with you to craft the ritual that’s right for you. We do our best to match you with the officiant you prefer. Death and Dying We accompany you in loss and grief, facilitating rituals and supporting grieving processes to hold you as you move through the stages of transition that can follow the death of a loved one. We understand that loss is as complex as relationships are, and that each mourner’s path is unique and unpredictable. Our clergy and spiritual leaders work with people who are dying, holding open the possibilities for the end of life as an intricate and profound experience for people approaching death and those close to them. Our Chevra Kadisha, or Holy Burial Society, is a devoted group of volunteers who offer the holy service of ritually preparing the loved one after death for burial or cremation. Our clergy are available to plan and lead the funeral or memorial, as well as shiva gatherings at your home during the week after the funeral. Kehilla members can contact the Chevra Kadisha at

We have open spots for Kehilla School 1st -6th grade, and Joyfully Jewish. Contact kaiya@ kehillasynagogue.org to discuss enrollment Kehilla School is a kid-centered community of Jewish life and learning where students engage the cultural, historical, spiritual, intellectual, social, artistic, and religious dimensions of their growing Jewish identity. Our school community is Jewish and multi-faith; it includes Jews of Color, LGBTQ folx, people of all genders, blended families, families created through adoption, and many more. Our school community reflects Kehilla’s vision of spiritual practice and social justice work. Check out this letter from July 2024 that explains how we are thinking about building structures for racial equity and decentering whiteness in Kehilla School. Additionally, Kehilla has a justice based relationship to Israel/Palestine and as a community we are guided by the values statement adopted in 2016. Our faculty are vibrant educators who love sharing their enthusiasm for contemporary Jewish life with our kids. Kehilla School meets every Thursday afternoon from about September to May. A typical day at Kehilla School is as follows: 3:45 – 4:15 pm Snack is available, students arrive and prepare for class. 4:15 pm Kehilla School starts! All grades will spend about 15 minutes of the day in T’fillah (prayer), and the rest of the day in their classes (broken up by grade). During T’fillah we give the students an opportunity to express gratitude, we sing a few prayers/songs, and finally have a discussion that relates to Torah. 6:00 pm Dismissal Our curriculum takes a Jewish Renewal approach to Torah, Jewish history, social justice, spiritual practice, celebration of Jewish festivals, and community building. Our curriculum is thematic by grade, with an open invitation to teachers to share their creativity. Curriculum Themes Kitah Aleph (first grade) Cycle of the Jewish Year Kitah Bet (second grade) Exploring Mitzvot Kitah Gimel (third grade) Learning about life through Torah Kitah Dalet (fourth grade) Tzedek (justice) Kitah Hey (fifth grade) Ark of Jewish history & global Jewish diversity Kitah Vav (sixth grade) Honing tools for drawing wisdom from Torah & modern Jewish identities Kehilla School approaches Hebrew as a sacred language of Jewish spiritual practice and traditional text. Our focus is on decoding and reading (we do not teach modern language or conversational Hebrew). Students in most grades get some exposure to the Hebrew Aleph Bet. In 5th and 6th grades there is a dedicated 20-30 minutes per week of Hebrew instruction. School tuition, which covers both spring and fall semesters, is on a sliding scale of $1150 – $1,600 per student for members of Kehilla and $1,850 per student for non-members. Non-member enrollment is available through 4th grade. Financial aid is available – please contact us for information. Please note that membership in Kehilla Community Synagogue and two years’ attendance in Kehilla School, level 5th & 6th grades, is a prerequisite to enrollment in the B’ Mitzvah program. We join in many coalitions, partnerships and community collaborations in both the Jewish and Movement landscapes. We find strength in being in relationship with others where our values, hopes, and visions intersect, while accepting that we may also have significant differences and tensions within those relationships. We affirm the generative possibilities of valuing relationship over complete agreement, and we lift up the value of holding our passionate ideas and ideals lightly enough to make space for the change and growth we all aspire to. 1300 Grand Avenue, Piedmont CA 94610 | privacy policy © 2026 Kehilla Community Synagogue, All Rights Reserved (510) 547-2424 Search Join our Mailing list! We affirm that equal respect must be accorded to Jews and to Palestinians—whether they have Israeli citizenship or not—and to all others who currently live in areas controlled by the Israeli government or its military. And we must acknowledge that everyone in Israel/Palestine has deep fears for their security and that they all desire a future for their children in which they live with peace and justice. In regard to Zionism: In Kehilla, we recognize the historical connection of the Jewish people to the land of Israel and we recognize the love for that land as expressed in Jewish biblical, liturgical, legal, and literary texts. We distinguish between this historical attachment and modern political Zionism. Our individual members have a variety of relationships to Zionism, but as a congregation, we do not fuse the practice of our spirituality and morality with any form of political nationalism. On Oppression & Injustice: We recognize that the establishment of the State of Israel was an outcome of oppression experienced by the Jewish people over many centuries, most notably the Shoah, the Nazi Holocaust. And we must also acknowledge that the creation of a Jewish state in historic Palestine and the occupation or control over the West Bank and Gaza Strip has resulted in tragic injustices experienced by the Palestinian people. Peace & Justice, the Occupation, Human Rights: We seek a future that includes security and full civil and human rights for all who live in the land—Jews and non-Jews alike. We do not accept the oppression of non-Jews—Palestinians and others—nor the denial of equal treatment in the territories and within Israel. As a congregation, we believe that Israel’s maintaining of the occupation, the extensive blockade of Gaza, and the creation and continued construction of Jewish-only settlements in the West Bank defeat the interests of peace and justice. Rejecting Exclusivity: We affirm the unique role that the land between the Jordan River and the sea has played in Jewish history and in the aspirations of many Jews for a time or a place of safety, justice and peace. Nevertheless, we do not accept exclusive Jewish entitlement to the land, nor to the city of Jerusalem. We recognize that the land and the city are sacred to many faiths, and are a home to a variety of peoples, ethnicities and cultures. Religious Freedom: We affirm the human right to freedom of religious conscience, belief and practice where it does not infringe on the human rights of others. We affirm this right in our own country and everywhere. Religious freedom must be available in Israel/Palestine for Jews, Muslims, Christians, Druze, atheists and all others with the full separation of religious and state authority. Open Discussion, Open Ears : We believe that open dialogue is a necessary activity within our synagogue, in the Jewish community, and in society at large. In regard to discussions about Israel/Palestine, we seek to speak compassionately and to listen compassionately to many ideas about resolving the violent and tragic situation that has emerged and persists in Israel/Palestine. The cohesiveness of our community is not dependent upon unanimity on these issues, but rather it depends upon a willingness to listen and to speak with compassion and with respect for the dignity of the other. 1300 Grand Avenue, Piedmont CA 94610 | privacy policy © 2026 Kehilla Community Synagogue, All Rights Reserved (510) 547-2424 Search Join our Mailing list! A Talk by Rabbi David - The Jewish Spiritual Necessity of Palestinian Freedom - Oct. 2nd, 2025 Rabbi David Cooper gave this talk on Yom Kippur afternoon: Preserving Judaism Requires Our Protest: The Jewish Spiritual Necessity of Palestinian Freedom The Torah mandates that the Jewish people act as a holy people, even to be a nation of priests. In the spirit of Rabbi Burt who would not separate divine Presence from ethical action, what does genocide in Gaza require of us as a holy community while so much of Jewish leadership has lost its ethical footing? Some of the clergy there had recently been in discussion with a rabbi who opposed ceasefire and felt that they needed to also hear from a rabbi who supported it. I was contacted and invited to speak at the church. Inasmuch as I knew that it was unnecessary for me to convince anyone there to support a ceasefire, I decided to aim my remarks on processes confronting American Jews at this time which affected how people, especially non-Jews, could engage compassionately and strategically with Jews in regard to the war in Gaza. In addition to those present physically, there were others watching on YouTube. Since then, this written version of what I said has been circulating as has the YouTube recording. The recording includes the Q & A session but the written version does not. View the transcript of my talk here. View a Youtube recording of my talk here. Cohort Groups for Jewish Progressives Reconstructionists Expanding Our Conversation on Israel-Palestine invite Jewish progressives to come together to connect with one another, share concerns, and build community at this time of war. This group is making space for conversation with the goal of creating monthly havurot (small groups). These groups are for people who identify as Jewish and fit into the particular cohort. Check out the new dates for current groups here, including Jewish academics, Multi-generational Jews, Jews who work in the Jewish community, and Shalom Bayit: Jews navigating family tensions. Note that these groups are not specifically Kehilla-sponsored. About the Group Reconstructionists Expanding Our Conversation on Israel-Palestine is an independent project organized by rabbis and laypeople and co-sponsored by several Reconstructionist congregations – Congregation Shaarei Shamayim, Havurah Shalom Israel/Palestine Committee, Kadima Reconstructionist Community, Kol Tzedek, Mishkan Shalom, and Or Haneshamah. We embrace the Reconstructionist movement’s values of justice (tzedek), compassion (chesed), and the dignity of all human life (b’tselem Elohim). Our embrace of these values leads us to oppose Israel’s domination of the Palestinian people. We hope this series will expand our understanding of historical and present-day conditions in Israel/Palestine and strengthen our commitment to a just future. All are welcome to join us in learning and listening with open hearts and minds. What changed? What's next? Panel Recording A panel recording of Rabbi Dev Noily (Kehilla), Rabbi Alissa Wise (Rabbis For Ceasefire), and Morriah Kaplan (If Not Now) speaking about their perspectives and experiences as Jews grappling with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Watch the recording of this discussion here. Passcode to access the recording: c9#BzC0* Amplifying Kehilla’s Support for a Ceasefire & Holding Our Community in Love - December 22nd, 2023 At this time of winter solstice we are deep into the 12th week of the war in Gaza/Israel/Palestine. As conditions in Gaza become incomprehensibly worse, Kehilla’s Spiritual Leadership team and Board of Directors feel compelled to do more to amplify Kehilla’s communal voice in the urgent and growing call for an immediate ceasefire, including release of all hostages and restoration of aid and services to Gaza. We believe that an immediate and permanent ceasefire is the way to stanch the spilling of civilian blood, to pause the unprecedented harm and human suffering in Gaza, to bring home the remaining hostages abducted on 10/7, and to give Israelis and Palestinians a diplomatic path to greater safety that we know this unrelenting violence will never achieve. We are motivated by our love and concern for all people in Gaza/Israel/Palestine, and believe that everyone there is entitled to basic safety, dignity, health, life and freedom from systemic persecution. We acknowledge that people in our community have different relationships to and analysis of the causes and conditions that led to this war, and different orientations to long-term solutions to the conflict. We feel the urgency to come together in this moment to raise our shared voice around a point of convergence in our appeal for an immediate ceasefire. Why amplify our call for a ceasefire now? Goals: For Kehilla to be a place where Jews of color experience belonging, and are able to bring their full selves into the community. This includes building our capacity to support the particular experiences of kids and youth of color and to help create space where POC can explore their experience and needs and create relationship with each other. For Kehilla to be a place for white people to do the work they need to do to recognize, understand and actively challenge white supremacy both in U.S culture and within Kehilla. Build the capacity of Kehilla, as an organization, to work in broader coalitions beyond Kehilla, to be allies and accomplices with Black, Indigenous, Mixed Heritage, People of Color-led organizations [BIMPOC], especially following their leadership. All of this is in a context of acknowledging that Kehilla is currently an organization that has a larger White and White-Jewish membership than BIMPOC and Jews-of-Color membership. Along with our comrades on the Disability Justice Committee, we affirm that racial justice and disability justice are inseparable. We encourage all Kehilla members to support the work of the Disability Justice Committee. You can learn about disability justice here: https://kehilladjc.carrd.co/ Our Team Kehilla’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) Team is guided by the BIPOC vision of our community becoming a magnet for Jews of color – continually growing in the practice of racial justice as we work to diminish white supremacy culture. The DEIB Team includes approximately equal numbers of BIPOC and White participants and was formed in 2020 to be community ambassadors for the Arc of Change, a year-long anti-racism training of 80 Kehilla leaders led by African-American Jewish leader Yavilah McCoy of Dimensions Educational Consulting . DEIB Team members : Victoria Alcoset, Lia Barrow, Sophi Hirsch, Miriam Khalife, Ruthie Levin, Rachael Reiley, Penny Rosenwasser Past Members : Avi Brooks, Ali Cannon, Julia Caplan, Lisa Feldstein, Rabbi SAM Luckey, Lev Michael Moses, Rabbi Gray Myrseth, Rabbi Dev Noily, Michael Saxe-Taller, Dee Ward, Aviva Wilcox You can reach the DEIB Team at
[email protected] . Make Space, Take Space Kehilla’s Black, Indigenous, Mixed Race, and All People of Color (BIPOC) Congress is excited to share with you our Make Space, Take Space Statement below. At the end of our year-long Arc of Change training facilitated by Yavilah McCoy, an African American Jewish leader – that was attended by over 100 congregants including 80 Kehilla leaders in 2021-2022 – participants asked the BIPOC Congress to share their top priority for white folks to work on. The response was: conscious inclusion, to feel like we belong together. The BIPOC Congress created this statement, taking into consideration what would help all members and guests feel at home in Kehilla spaces. Acknowledging cultural shifts can be slow, we, and the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Team, view honoring this statement as one concrete act – an act to move our Kehilla community towards decentering whiteness, and centering the experiences and leadership of our BIPOC community, and in extension, all marginalized congregants. Thank you for participating in the practice of supporting Kehilla as a place of belonging. MAKE SPACE, TAKE SPACE: A Communication Guide for Practicing Belonging and Equity Please know that all people who are here are supposed to be here. In every space that you are in, notice who is present, who is leading, who is speaking, and whose voices, perspectives, and lived experiences are not reflected. Consider, what is your individual role and what is our communal responsibility to make appropriate changes that support belonging and equity. When in collective conversation, please notice who else is in the conversation with you. Please make space for those whose identities have been historically and systematically oppressed to speak first and more often if they so choose. That means, for example, Black, Indigenous, mixed-race, or any person of color, may speak before white people. Additionally a person living with disabilities may speak before those who have more access to conversations. In our community it may also mean youth are purposefully included. In this model of making space for those voices who are traditionally oppressed, you support creating belonging for all of us. If time is a constraint, you might not get to share; and your voice also matters. Please connect with someone else in the conversation after the gathering. These guidelines were created by the BIPOC Congress to support our larger community with practicing belonging and equity in all spaces, particularly in groups, meetings, classrooms, workshops, and services at Kehilla Community Synagogue. Kehilla’s Belonging & Allyship / Arc of Change Initiative History: Partial Timeline Check out the timeline here. BIPOC and Beloveds Shabbat Held on Second Fridays. Beloved community, this space is for Black, Brown, Indigenous folks, folks who identify as People of Color, and their Beloveds. It’s time to slow down, embody self-care and feel the liberation of stepping into this special time of the week. We’ll light the candles together to invoke our time of rest. Please feel free to bring ritual items if so moved and share elements of your own practice as we deepen connection and community. This space is for us, created by us. Please contact

Creating a brit is one of the priorities of our Renewing Kehilla organizational development process, helping to articulate clear and transparent communal norms, aspirations and expectations that are rooted in Jewish teaching. This process is, in part, a result of our Organizational Development (OD) process in consultation with Dragonfly Partners. There are so many ways to participate in the creation of this covenant. Here is an outline of the process so that you can stay informed and engaged in uplifting our community. Please read the following information carefully, as it outlines and details the entire process. The first step in the process, beginning on October 27, is an eight-session class taught Read More » Introducing the Organizational Development Process December 11, 2024 On Wednesday, December 11, we kicked off our Renewing Kehilla Organizational Development Process. You are invited to watch the recording of the evening, at which we learned about the process and our goals to find better ways for members to connect to Kehilla, to each other, to Jewish spiritual practice, and to tikkun olam—while building a stronger foundation for our next 40 years. If you want to share your thoughts with our OD consultants Dragonfly Partners, please fill out this anonymous input form. Kehilla Community, Kehilla’s leadership has been working toward launching an organizational development process for more than five years, and we’re thrilled to finally begin. Over the past eight years, our beloved community has grown by 50%—a testament to the vibrant, welcoming space we’ve created together. Now, we’re embarking on a thoughtful process to ensure our organizational structures and processes can fully support our thriving community of nearly 1,000 members. A time of personal discernment surrounded by family, friends, and fellow synagogue congregants. Kehilla observance traditions include rousing music, contemplative music, prayer, meditation, and dance. How do we collectively access our deepest selves surrounded and supported by our community? How do we reënergize ourselves to continue our work for justice in the world in the coming year? We rediscover the secret each year. Sukkot Sukkot is a seven-day harvest festival that commemorates the time when the Israelites dwelt in the Sinai wilderness. We celebrate by building and decorating a temporary dwelling called a Sukkah. It is customary to wave a lulav, a bouquet of four different plant species (palm, myrtle, willow, and citron), in six directions, which connects the Sukkah to the world/divine force beyond it. Kehilla offers a community Sukkah to visit during the holiday. Simchat Torah Simchat Torah celebrates the beginning, ending, and cycle of the Torah. On this holiday, we read from both the last parsha (portion) of Deuteronomy as well as the first parsha of Genesis, reminding us that there is joy to be found in endings and beginnings. We also celebrate that we have cycles in our lives that allow us to experience both endings and beginnings, sometimes in the same evening! Sometimes we unroll the entire Torah scroll during services on Simchat Torah, but every year Kehilla celebrates by bringing movement into the sanctuary and dancing with the Torah! Hanukkah We celebrate Hanukkah at Kehilla with an annual family-friendly Hanukkah party! We light our menorahs together and enjoy a vegetarian potluck, with music and a special children’s program. Delicious latkes are provided. Purim On Purim, we retell the story of Megillat Esther (the Book of Esther). This story follows Esther, a courageous Jewish woman who wins the courtship of King Achashverosh (yayyy!!). She quickly learns that his adviser, Hamen (booooo!!!), is plotting against the Jews, and Esther comes up with a plan to save her people. Esther’s story is often acted out on Purim with a joyful and, traditionally, funny rendition. It is customary to wear ridiculous costumes on Purim, eat hamentashen (triangular, fruit or chocolate filled cookies), retell Esther’s amazing story, and celebrate her bravery and wit. Kehilla has a fabulous family friendly Purim Carnival for kids and their grown ups on a Sunday near Purim too! Passover Passover retells the story of the Jews’ escape from our enslavement in Egypt. This holiday last eight days and it is customary to have a seder (a ritual dinner that walks us through the events leading up to and our escape from Egypt) on the first three nights. At Kehilla, Passover is an opportunity to explore how oppression continues to exist in our world and asking what we can do to support other groups who are trying to part their Red Sea and find liberation. We also use Passover to not only acknowledge how we are constricted in our own lives, but try to expand our hearts, minds, and spiritual awareness to help those around the world who continue to be enslaved. Shavuot Shavuot commemorates Israelites receiving the Torah on Mount Sinai and entering into a holy covenant. We celebrate by staying up all night and studying Torah along with Jews and friends from all over the East Bay at Kehilla Community Synagogue. 1300 Grand Avenue, Piedmont CA 94610 | privacy policy © 2026 Kehilla Community Synagogue, All Rights Reserved (510) 547-2424 Search Join our Mailing list! For Everyone, In Support of Those With Chemical Sensitivities Our wonderful Bracha Betty Stone has made us a You Tube video on Scent Sensitivity and coming scent free to Kehilla services and events, under her alter ego Aunt Esther. Please view this list of fragrance-free products and related resources that can assist you in keeping Kehilla fragrance-free. How to be Scent-Free at Kehilla So Everyone Can Attend Services & Events Please come fragrance-free to all of Kehilla’s services and events. This will help create a safe and healthy environment for Kehilla’s members and guests, especially those with multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), asthma that is triggered by fragrances and chemicals, and related health conditions. What does it mean to come scent-free? By “scent-free” we mean fragrance-free and non-toxic. To help make Kehilla safe, healthy and accessible to people with these health conditions, Kehilla requests that we all do our best to do the following: • Please only wear fragrance-free products to Kehilla. It is especially important to avoid wearing strong fragrances. Please also avoid wearing any scented products to Kehilla, if possible. • Please refrain from wearing clothes to Kehilla that were washed in scented detergents, fabric softeners or dryer sheets. Only use fragrance-free, environmentally-safe laundry products instead. Emissions from clothes washed with conventional fabric softeners or dryer sheets are particularly hazardous to many people with asthma, MCS, and related disabilities. Even the emissions from fragrance-free versions of these conventional fabric softeners and dryer sheets can be hazardous. Many fragrance-free, environmentally-safe laundry products are available locally and are listed in several documents that are linked to below. • Please avoid wearing clothes to Kehilla that were conventionally dry cleaned or dry cleaned using hydrocarbon solvents. These clothes emit indoor air pollutants that are especially toxic to many people with MCS and related disabilities. The chemical emissions continue for quite some time. Some dry cleaners that use hydrocarbon solvents claim to be “environmentally friendly” although none of them are. If you can’t avoid wearing clothes that were dry cleaned, please remove the plastic bags, thoroughly air the clothes out before wearing and avoid the scent-free section of our rooms. • Please avoid wearing clothes that were stored with mothballs to Kehilla. • Please avoid wearing brand new clothing to Kehilla, unless you have first washed them with fragrance-free laundry products. Fabric finishes in new clothes or bags can be toxic to many people with MCS and related disabilities. Please also avoid wearing fresh shoe polish to Kehilla. For Those With Mobility Concerns And In Wheelchairs Physical Access to Our Building at 1300 Grand Avenue Kehilla Community Synagogue is a three-story building located on a triangular, sloping lot bordered by Grand Ave and Fairview Ave. Although we do not have an elevator, our hillside location allows us to have doors with wheelchair ramps on the first two floors. The third floor of the building is a converted balcony, currently used as a classroom and offices. We minimize the use of the third floor for Kehilla activities. Both of the doors with wheelchair ramps have door bells that connect to our phone system. During regular office hours (Monday-Friday, 10am-5pm), please press the bell, and someone will answer the call. Main Floor Access (Sanctuary, Multipurpose Room, & Main Administrative Offices) The Sanctuary, the Multi-Purpose Room and our Main Administrative Offices are located on the main floor. This level is accessed by a ramp on Fairview Ave. There is a single handicapped parking space right next to this ramp. If this space is already in use, other street parking may be available on Fairview Ave. Someone using either the accessible parking space or other Fairview Ave. parking needs to be able to either independently walk up the curb or to navigate up a somewhat steep hill in order to use that ramp and entrance. If you have parked in the Kehilla parking lot, in order to reach the wheelchair accessible entrance, you will need to go the entire length of the building on Grand Ave, turn the corner and come up the hill on Fairview. Note that the hill is somewhat steep. Lower Floor Access (Social Hall, Fireside Room) The Social Hall and the Fireside Room are located on the lower floor of the building. The entrance for this floor is on Grand Ave, adjacent to the bus stop. We suggest parking in the Kehilla lot. Then go along the Grand Ave. side of the building (passing the main steps). When you get to the bus stop on your right, you will see the double doors into Kehilla on your left. Moving Between Floors For services that begin in the Sanctuary and are followed by refreshments in the Social Hall, you would need to first enter the building from the Fairview Ave entrance to attend the service. To transition from the service to the Social Hall, you need to exit through the Fairview Ave entrance, go down the hill and turn right onto Grand Ave. The double doors to the Social Hall are adjacent to the bus stop. Note that the hill is somewhat steep. Bathrooms Accessible bathrooms are available on the Social Hall level and partially accessible bathrooms are located on the Sanctuary level Animals in the Building We welcome service animals in our building. Pets that are not service animals are not permitted at public gatherings or in the sanctuary and social hall. Any animals brought to Kehilla are subject to our scent-free policy; please see above for more information on being scent-free. 1300 Grand Avenue, Piedmont CA 94610 | privacy policy © 2026 Kehilla Community Synagogue, All Rights Reserved (510) 547-2424 Search Join our Mailing list! We weave together a tapestry of traditional nusach (the musical modes in which liturgy is chanted), contemporary chants and settings by composers such as Cantor Linda Hirschhorn and Rabbis Hanna Tiferet and Shefa Gold, as well as hasidic and neo-hasidic melodies. We pray in unison, in harmony, through rounds, call and response, chanting and through traditional style davenen— when everyone prayers quietly, but audibly, at their own pace simultaneously. Our congregants are often moved to rise and dance while we’re singing and praying together. Our services are frequently enhanced by outstanding percussive accompaniment and sometimes by guitar as well. As our community grows and evolves, so does our music. While honoring the melodies that are known and loved amongst us, we also mindfully incorporate new melodies and liturgy into our services to broaden our internal and our shared prayer experience as a community. Our repertoire of sacred music and prayersong is largely, but not exclusively, Ashkenazic. We also incorporate a number of Sephardic and Mizrachi melodies into our prayer. When a particular body of music and liturgy is being introduced, we hold “Songshops,” where everyone gathers in the spirit of learning about the prayers and has a chance to practice learning new melodies together. Over the past several years, we’ve held songshops in preparation for High Holy Days, and for learning the music and liturgy of Kabbalat Shabbat to enhance our fabulous Friday night services. Children attending Kehilla School receive monthly music and prayer classes taught by Shulamit Wise Fairman, our Music Director, and our Musical Prayer Leaders, as well as a weekly opportunity to sing and pray together, led by our School Director, Rabbi Dev Noily, along with various Kehilla School teachers and teen leaders. Shulamit offers adult education courses several times a year that focus on teaching multiple liturgical and musical versions of many of our daily prayers and Shabbat prayers. These courses provide a wonderful opportunity to deepen your understanding of our prayers, to indulge your love for singing, and to experience the many ways that music can enhance your experience of prayer and awaken your senses. Everyone is welcome! We have special music events throughout the year, including performances and workshops by local and international Jewish music acts. We have now twice hosted an “instant choir” event that gives Kehilla congregants who seek to sing and perform Jewish choral music an opportunity to be led by acclaimed composers and conductors, Cantor Linda Hirschhorn and Fran Avni. We also have a congregant-led Chanting Group, Kol HaLev (“Voice of the Heart”) that meets monthly. Kehilla was recently honored to have been voted Best Synagogue Music of the East Bay ! In its broadest terms, Kehilla’s B’ Mitzvah Program is designed to help students continue to build their relationship to Judaism through encounters with sacred texts, mitzvot, and perspectives on spirituality. Our program is a model (nationally) for creating meaningful, student centered B’mitzvah experience. Kehilla understands becoming B’ Mitzvah as a process of growth, reflection, and meaningful exploration. Our program intends to help students become more aware of their transition to Jewish adulthood and to envision the kind of adults they would like to become. The months that the student spends in concentrated study in a small group with 1 or two other students are celebrated in a Shabbat service in which the young person reads from the Torah, presents a drash (teaching) to the community and participates in leading the congregation in prayer. Membership in Kehilla Community Synagogue and attending Kehilla School for 5th & 6th grade are a prerequisite to enrollment in the B’ Mitzvah program. For questions about Kehilla’s B’mitzvah Program, please contact Becky Bob-Waksberg (

What does the Torah teach about our relationship to land and about how we are to live with integrity and in harmony with the land? What’s the role of the land of Israel/Palestine in the covenantal relationship between the Jewish people and YHVH / G-d? How does Torah and later Jewish teaching guide us in our experience as Jews living in, and embracing diaspora? Together we will study both sacred Jewish texts and current scholarship that is (re-)revealing Jewish diaspora and exile as generative, creative and necessary – both physically and spiritually – for Jewish thriving. Join Rabbi Diane Elliot for this series designed to unpack some of the essential teachings of the Baal Shem Tov (also known as the BeShT), the great 18th century shaman, kabbalist and mystic who sparked a revival of Jewish spirituality across Eastern Europe that echoes through the Renewal Judaism of today. Our approach to progressive politics is based on a spiritual mandate to heal and repair the world, a central theme in Judaism, by showing compassion to all, and actively working towards social justice, peace and environmental sanity. This is the core of what Rabbi Burt Jacobson envisioned when he started Kehilla School, and later Kehilla Community Synagogue, in 1984. For more than a quarter of a century, Kehilla has lived — and continues to live — this vision through our liturgy, our music, our rituals, our inclusive and egalitarian community, our advocacy and social action, our education of our children. Kehilla Community Synagogue at a demonstration against US intervention in El Salvador, circa 1985 Rabbi Burt was also keenly aware of the sense of isolation many people experience in their day-to-day lives, and recognized that tikkun olam (healing the world) also requires creating and sustaining community. Kehilla is a community of participation, of creating together the community and the world we want. Kehilla has many leaders, many teachers, and many learners. That is why we call ourselves a “community synagogue.” In Kehilla, you don’t need to experience life’s inevitable simchas and tsuris – joys and heartaches – in isolation. Being in community sweetens our joyous times and holy days, and softens the times of distress as we support and console each other. Our liturgies are drawn from tradition, and use newer prayer forms that reflect our feminism, our egalitarianism, our concerns for the health of the planet, our spiritual seeking and our faith, as well as our healthy skepticism. Music, dancing, humor, joy, and meditation all can be found at Kehilla services; the cerebral, the visceral, as well as the transcendent; all are part of the Kehilla religious and spiritual experience. Our youth programming – especially in Kehilla School and our Bar/Bat Mitzvah program – is designed to help our young people become critical thinkers: empowered to develop their own perspectives; understanding the contributions of the Jewish past, while grappling with the values and challenges facing the human community in today’s world. As Kehilla enters its second quarter century we delight in seeing the character of our community evolve, as a new generation – some already in leadership in Kehilla –use their experiences, visions, needs and leadership to guide us through the next decades. 1300 Grand Avenue, Piedmont CA 94610 | privacy policy © 2026 Kehilla Community Synagogue, All Rights Reserved (510) 547-2424 Search Join our Mailing list! Everyone is welcome to share in these simchas / joyous celebrations, as we receive the wisdom of our youth. Chai Shabbat A few times a year, we enhance our shabbat practice with a special, celebratory “Chai Shabbat” to gather more of our community, with more of our prayer and musical leaders. After a morning Chai Shabbat service, we enjoy a fabulous kiddush lunch, and when we have Chai Kabbalat Shabbat, we kick off Friday night services with a festive shabbat meal together . Tot Shabbat Led by Jen Miriam and Alon Altman and their puppet friends, Tot Shabbat generally takes place on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month, from 10:30 am to 11 am. It is geared for babies and children up to age 5 and their grown-ups, followed by kiddush. If there are young children in your family, you are warmly invited to bring them to Tot Shabbat. It’s a wonderful way to introduce your children to Shabbat and to meet other Jewish families. We love that we have all kinds of families at Tot Shabbat. Some have two Jewish parents and some have one. We have queer families, multiracial families, and families with single parents. Sometimes grandparents bring their grandchildren. Come join us for a special time of Shabbat connection and fun! If you would like to be added to the Kehilla Tot Families email list, email Rabbi SAM at

Liberation, peace, justice and healing seem to recede into a distant and hard-to-imagine future. Maybe a seder feels impossible this year. Some of us can’t imagine connecting with this ancient story centering Jewish suffering and liberation right now. Some of us need exactly this story. Some of us will be with family who are in a very different place, and real talk may feel too risky.
