When he arrives, Russell explains that a friend and colleague, Judge Dee Ren Jie, has been mistakenly arrested with a group of Chinese agitators. Russell is afraid that if Dee’s identity is discovered by Metropolitan Police inspector William Bard, whom Dee encountered during their shared service during WWI, the end result could be hazardous for Dee, so Russell enlists Lao in a plan to extract Dee from jail. While the plan isn’t executed as flawlessly as Russell hoped, Dee is freed. Now he is able to pursue his reason for coming to London: he is investigating the recent murder of a Chinese shopkeeper with whom he served in WWI. When Dee asks Lao for his assistance in discovering the identity of the killer, he is, at first, hesitant. Lao She teaches Chinese to English students and is an aspiring novelist. He is not an adventurer or a detective. Nonetheless, he agrees to assist Judge Dee in any way he can to solve the mystery of The Murder of Mr. Ma . In their first collaboration, award-winning author SJ Rozan and debut author Shen Yen Nee tells a story that has its roots in the past, both historical and literary, with a strong cinematic quality and the perfect blend of thoughtful examination of the mystery in need of a solution and incredibly choreographed action sequences (the authors enlisted the expertise of Kung Fu fight choreographers to realize their vision). To all of this, throw in marvelously drawn post-WWI London, including the near mania that was affecting the country over anything associated with the exotic far-east, with just a tad of the British penny-dreadfuls thrown in for good measure. The result is a rollicking, page turning novel filled with wonderful characters (some of whom, like the novel’s two protagonists, are based on actual historical figures), edge of your seat action and a challenging mystery. The novel’s forward begins with the line "Every story connects to all stories." The authors draw a number of parallels between Dee and Lao’s relationship with the well known partnership of Holmes and Watson, allowing readers both a shortcut to understanding Dee and Lao, but also the joys of discovering how these characters are markedly different from their predecessors. The result is something that seems simultaneously familiar and exciting. That same forward also includes this: "A good friend once said that no story ever truly ends." The Murder of Mr. Ma is the first of a new series featuring Judge Dee Ren Jie and Lao She, and readers will be ready for the sequel the moment they turn the last page. Let’s hope the wait is not long... Other Books Reviewed by Daryl M. Times , and USA Today bestselling author who has written six novels, including The Book Woman's Daughter , a memoir and most recently, two children’s picture books. The works have been published in more than 15 languages. Her novel The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek is taught widely in high schools and college classrooms and has been adopted as a Common Read selection by states, cities, and colleges across the country and abroad. Kim Michele lives with her family in Kentucky and is the founder of Shy Rabbit, a writers’ residency, and a literacy initiative, Courthouses Reading Across Kentucky & Beyond. Her latest novel is The Mountains We Call Home and she recently talked about it with Daryl Maxwell for the LAPL Blog . You introduced readers to Cussy Mary, Junia, and Jackson in The Bookwoman of Troublesome Creek in 2019. In 2022, you took readers back to Kentucky to tell the story of Cussy Mary’s & Jackson’s daughter, Honey, in The Bookwoman’s Daughter . What drew you back to these characters and to write The Mountains We Call Home ? I had countless requests to continue the story, and I felt I owed it to the readers to give them Cussy’s final journey. In preparing these questions, I just realized I’ve never asked you about Junia, Cussy Mary, and Honey’s mule. Who inspired Junia? Is she based on an animal, or animals, you have known (mule or otherwise)? Junia was inspired by my Kentucky history. Over horses or donkeys, mules were preferred by most of the Kentucky Packhorse librarians. Mules are stronger than horses, live longer, and require less care. They are more intelligent, have great survival instincts, and make excellent protectors. How did the novel evolve and change as you wrote and revised it? Are there any characters or scenes that were lost in the process that you wish had made it to the published version? Returning to Cussy’s world was one of my most difficult challenges. Before the pandemic, I began working on what is now titled The Mountains We Call Home . Like Cussy and my Packhorse librarians, literacy accessibility has always been extremely important to me. For decades, I’ve donated books to women’s shelters, children's group homes, and prisons, but never in my wildest dreams did I ever think one of the recipients would end up being my child. Our adult child had been battling addiction, which ultimately led to incarceration. Devastated, I struggled to grasp it all, the imprisonment, harsh rules for loved ones, and recovery along with silently trying to navigate Kentucky’s complex judicial system. I worried I couldn’t do justice fighting for Cussy’s and Jackson’s freedom in the 1950s, so I put Mountains aside and instead gave you Honey’s sweet, brave journey. When I’d finished The Book Woman’s Daughter , and our child was safely on the road to sobriety, I felt the timing was right to complete Cussy’s final journey. Because my Mister worked at the Kentucky prison for three years after graduating college, I was doubly blessed to have his insight and memories. This, along with thoughtful discussions about Kentucky’s archaic case laws with a brilliant judge, would help me make Cussy’s transitions not only plausible but authentic and accurate. Do you have any favorite places in Louisville? A hidden gem that someone visiting should not miss, but would only learn about from a resident? The Kentucky Derby runs on the first Saturday in May and should be on everyone’s bucket list. The Frazier Museum is an immersive visit, and Louisville has some of the finest restaurants and chefs in the U.S. I have always loved the Seelbach Hotel, specifically the Rathskeller inside, where F. Scott Fitzgerald stayed many times and was heavily inspired to write the novel The Great Gatsby . Other famous guests were Al Capone , many presidents, Elvis and more. The architect is beautiful and stunning! They also filmed The Insider  and The Hustler there. Similar question for the state of Kentucky? Where should someone visiting be sure to visit? The Bourbon Trails are fun, and I always recommend Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill—it’s gorgeous. Hyden, Kentucky, is a must-visit. This is where the first Kentucky Packhorse Librarian Historical Marker has been erected, and I highly recommend staying at the Mary Breckinridge Inn there. The old inn is full of very rich history about the Frontier Nursing Service, which again was women-driven, and where nurses delivered medical care on horseback in Eastern Kentucky. In 2019, you established Shy Rabbit, a writers and artists residency. What inspired you to create Shy Rabbit, and how is it going? It has been a way to help and inspire other writers and artists—pay it forward. Our first visitor to Shy Rabbit was a retiring librarian. We’ve had many authors stay. It’s just a very lovely gem, peaceful, not far from the city, but full of wildlife and close to everything. In your Author’s Note, you mention that you had the chance to spend some time with Artist and Sculptor Ed Hamilton. Can you tell us a bit about the time you spent together and the stories he shared? Ed is amazing, and we talked about his childhood before Urban Renewal destroyed his neighborhood, which I also had a personal connection with, as mentioned in my author notes. He discussed how the federal program inflicted generational poverty on countless. I wanted to shine a light on the vibrant business community before it was all destroyed—the many Mom & Pop diners, theatres, small businesses. Ed, also nicknamed in real life Lil Biff has a small scene in the book, and I’ve dropped in a favorite recipe of his from his childhood for my readers to enjoy. You also mention in your Author’s Note you’re leading a new initiative called Courthouses Reading Across Kentucky & Beyond. Can you t CARL•Connect Discovery × The credentials entered are incorrect. (Waterstones Book of the Year 2024) に選ばれ、2025 年5月には (The British Book Awards 2025) デビュー・フィクション部門も受賞しています. 柚木麻子 / Butter Yuzuki, Asako View in Catalog Pŏt'ŏ = Butter: Yujŭk'i Asak'o sosŏl Yuzuki, Asako View in Catalog Have you read Butter , a novel by Japanese author Asako Yuzuki ? Inspired by the real-life "Metropolitan Marriage-Hunting Serial Murder Case" that took place in Japan in 2009, Butter is more than just a crime mystery. At its heart is the story of two women: Manako Kajii (Kajimana), a woman imprisoned on suspicion of poisoning several men, and Rika Machida, a weekly magazine journalist who repeatedly interviews her. What begins as a straightforward investigation gradually pulls Rika into deeper conversations—not only with Kajimana but also with herself, as she is forced to confront her beliefs and relationships. The novel boldly challenges long-standing societal norms in Japan, such as the ideas that "women should be beautiful," "women should be young," "women should be slim," and "women should be domestic." At the same time, the story is filled with rich and sensual descriptions of food, which play a crucial role throughout the book. The recipes and meals described within appeal to all five senses, creating an immersive experience that goes beyond the page. I found myself particularly drawn to the simple but evocative dish of butter-soy-sauce rice. Before I knew it, I was trying it for myself in the kitchen. Reading the novel and then cooking and tasting a dish from its pages created a powerful connection between fiction and real life. Butter is a thought-provoking exploration of what it means to eat, to live, and to be a woman. It leaves a lasting impression. Originally published in Japan in 2017, Butter was translated into English and released in the UK and US in 2024, receiving widespread acclaim. It was named Waterstones Book of the Year 2024 in the UK and won the Debut Fiction award at the British Book Awards 2025. I highly recommend this novel to those interested in contemporary Japanese literature and anyone curious about women's lives, social expectations, and the relationship between food and identity. The emotions and meals depicted in Butter are sure to linger in your heart long after you turn the final page. Reviewed by Daryl M. , Librarian, West Valley Regional Branch Library, October 3, 2024 email --> --> View it in Our Catalog Horror. Some people love it! Some people don't! And, generally speaking, people tend to have strong feelings about the genre, falling into one camp or the other. In a bit of irony, there are people who are 'afraid' of Horror as a genre. Yep, they are afraid of the genre people seek out purposefully to cause them to feel fear. Within this group of people, there are those who are afraid of Horror but are also curious. They wonder why others enjoy the idea of feeling scared or disturbed, and they may be ready to take the plunge and begin to explore. It is for this group of people, possibly fearful and definitely, to a degree, adventurous, that Emily C. Hughes has written her new book: Horror for Weenies: Everything You Need to Know About the Films You're Too Scared to Watch . Hughes describes how a viewing of Poltergeist at an early age put her off of watching Horror films. She goes on to explain how, as she became an adult, she had the experience of listening to her friends and family as they talked about Horror films while she never truly understood the conversation taking place. Hughes says that her bridge back into watching Horror cinema was reading Horror literature, and once she started watching them, she never looked back. Hughes, who now regularly writes about Horror, has provided the perfect entry point for those interested but unsure how to proceed. She recounts a brief history of Horror cinema and describes how and why she has chosen the films she examines. The rest of the book closely examines films released from 1960 through 2018, providing in-depth synopses, production notes, cultural context, and suggested reading for potential viewers who still may not find themselves ready to watch. The result is an infinitely readable and enjoyable book that will be interesting for both established Horror film fans and a practical and fun guide for those looking for a place to challenge their comfort zones and take the plunge. As Hughes' experiences illustrate how Horror can be an acquired taste and Horror for Weenies may not be for everyone. But as the days grow shorter, the nights grow longer, and Halloween rapidly approaches, Horror for Weenies may be the perfect way for some to find a film to while away the hours on an Autumn evening.
