The central component in providing these tools and services is our Learning Center, which is greatly facilitated by two learning centers, one for men at the Samaritan House, and the other for women at the Lydia House. Under the guidance of staff and a dedicated team of volunteers, we provide the tools, resources and skill sets necessary for an individual to remove the barriers preventing them from finding work in the competitive job market, and to maintain stable employment. The Learning Center Program offers the following: providing a basic well-rounded education necessary to obtain and maintain employment access to computers and internet for staying viable in today’s technology arena provision of internships and identification of job opportunities preparation for GED/Hi Set and High School Diploma equivalency through personalized, one-on-one sessions assistance with application to financial aid programs for college as well as providing assistance with applying to trade school and free adult education certificate based courses offered at Long Beach City College helping clients engage the critical thinking mind and encourage cognitive brain function through a variety of curriculum and online activities partnership with Long Beach City College to offer ESL (English as a Second Language) in our mission classroom to our local community members to ensure they can obtain more gainful employment opportunities In correlation with the Learning Center Program, each client is also provided with financial literacy training that advocates the fundamentals of good financial stewardship. This teaches students to build a budget, resolve debt, avoid credit card misuse, start savings and checking accounts, and create a long-term financial plan. In 2021 the Men’s Learning Center provided 6,124 individual classroom hours of instruction for our homeless male clients and the Women’s Resource Center provided 8,320 career-coaching sessions for the women. In 2021, The Lydia House Learning Center provided 1,056 classroom hours of instruction for our New Life program women. A serious storm was coming and we needed to get as many people as we could off the street that night. Michelle has experienced significant trauma and is a victim of domestic violence. Her alcohol abuse was a way of numbing her pain. She felt hopeless. We prayed with her and as we prayed she wept. We were able to get her off the street and into shelter. While the road to healing and recovery will be long, in this moment she felt seen and heard and experienced the love of God. Help us bring healing and hope to the most vulnerable of our community and support our Search and Rescue program.” Plan A Visit Schedule a visit to the mission to learn more about whom we serve and what we do. She was abused from the age of three until she ran away from home. The years of trauma led to a cycle of addiction, incarceration and homelessness. “Jail was my second home,” Naomi shares. As years went by and she became a mother, addiction kept her from being present for the people she loved most. Her lowest moment came while living in an alley, just around the corner from her mom’s house – close enough to see her children, but unable to care for them. “That was rock bottom,” Naomi says. “I couldn’t be there for my kids.” Through a series of moments Naomi describes as divine intervention, she and her children were welcomed into Lydia House at the Mission. “They told us it was full – and then they got us in,” she says. “That was God at work.” From the beginning, Naomi was grateful for the supportive community. “I can’t say anything bad about this place,” she shares. “The staff cares about me. They don’t give up on me.” After Naomi completed the 90-day program, she committed to the New Life Program, where her life continued to be transformed . “Before I came here, I was broken,” she says. “Now I’m calmer, happier and learning how to be a better mom.” “ I see everything differently now. I’m learning something new every day.” Naomi also found greater purpose for her life, as she began sharing advice and encouragement with other women at the Mission. Her faith also grew alongside her healing. “God was always with me,” she reflects. “But now I’m walking with Him.” Naomi recently graduated from the program and now works at the Mission as our House Manager at Lydia House. Because of you, neighbors like Naomi know that God loves them and they are worthy of a new beginning. Thank you for opening the door to hope and healing this summer! “A weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I know God is with me. I think He has me here for a reason.” To read the rest of this issue of Rescue Review, click here. Help other people like Naomi… Naomi’s story of hope and healing is inspiring. Our long-term recovery programs exist to help other men and women find healing. Will you provide this help to others? The Mission provides food, clothing, shelter and spiritual guidance to the homeless and less fortunate people of the community. Long Beach Rescue Mission stands dedicated to helping individuals overcome the homeless cycle, achieve long term goals and make a world of difference in today’s society. We also provide meals and worship services in the evenings and on Sundays to senior citizens and neighborhood families. The Mission provides loving care and spiritual guidance to help people who are homeless find purpose, direction and hope. Long Beach Rescue Mission is comprised of three facilities. The Samaritan House serves as a home for men, the John and Helen Apostle House provides shelter for men with disabilities, while Lydia House offers a safe haven for women and their children. Individuals work with a case manager either in our 90 day Case Management Program or our one-year New Life Program , which helps men and women overcome substance abuse, addictions and life’s deeper challenges. LONG BEACH RESCUE MISSION HISTORY Through challenging times – and the work of dedicated founders, staff, donors, volunteers and community partners – Long Beach Rescue Mission has helped thousands of at-risk individuals for over 50 years, transforming many lives. Humble Beginnings - 1972 With a direct vision and call from God to begin a rescue mission and share the gospel message to the homeless, founders Wayne and Janet Teuerle gathered support in the early seventies to open Long Beach Rescue Mission in a former Navy Locker Club. This 5,000 square foot building included a Chapel, kitchen, dining room, showers and 40 beds with Gospel services nightly. With faithful support from the community and churches, the Teuerle’s served 27 meals on opening day offering a chapel service and a place to stay for 16 homeless men. That was August 7, 1972. Later, in 1973, Wayne and Janet Teuerle opened a safe haven for women and children with the purchase of an old 1902 Sears Roebuck catalogue house for our original Lydia House , funded in part by Pacesetters Ladies Auxiliary. Visionary Growth - 1982 To embrace the Teuerle’s broader vision along with an expanding local homeless population, the Teuerle’s designed and built a new and larger facility (20,000 sq. ft.) on Pacific Avenue in 1982. Named Samaritan House , it was a truly special place, where men with different backgrounds and challenges could get the in-depth help they needed. Samaritan House was later expanded in 1987 to include two additional dorms, classrooms, an administrative office and upstairs staff apartments. Currently, the Samaritan House has a 133 bed capacity. Then, in 1985, a nearby building bought earlier as a youth center was demolished to make way for the new Lydia House , with three times as many beds as the original location. Our Lydia House is now a 50 bed safe haven for women and children. The Mission’s Growing Service to the Greater Long Beach Area Long Beach Rescue Mission’s programs now have an established curriculum and structure to ensure our guests don’t just experience a “revolving door” ministry at the Mission. Case Management has been designed to help people connect to available resources, regain momentum, and see their way off the street. Our one-year, New Life Program offers education, counseling and spiritual guidance to overcome a person’s deeper life challenges. In addition, our Bridge program has been added, assisting our graduates into the community with housing and employment. This past year, LBRM served a total of 164,373 meals to our community, provided 73,556 bed nights, 32,441 Life Skills Classes and 4,422 Counseling sessions. A Place of Healing and Hope for Over 50 Years. The Long Beach Rescue Mission continues to be a light to our community by improving the quality of life of the hurting and homeless through loving and equipping them to be reconciled: To God, To Self, To Family, To Society. Today, the Long Beach Rescue Mission celebrates the success of 86% of our New Life Program graduates who have transitioned into independent living and employment. We thank all of our supporters who invest in this life-changing ministry, giving hope for new life. With God’s help and your partnership, we will continue to faithfully move forward as we strive to ease homelessness in our community. Our Mission Long Beach Rescue Mission is a place of healing and hope serving the greater Long Beach community by improving the quality of life of the hurting and homeless through loving and equipping them to be reconciled: To God • To Self • To Family • To Society Our Vision The vision for Long Beach Rescue Mission is to deepen and strengthen its programs, communicate its unique work, build a dynamic and committed team of employees and volunteers, broaden its financial support and plan carefully for its future in order to more faithfully and effectively carry out its mission. Meet Kristen Our Board Chair As we begin our 50th year of ministry in the heart of Long Beach, we affirm the purpose and spiritual direction of the Long Beach Rescue Mission established by our founders Wayne and Janet Tuerle. Being faithful to God’s calling on their lives, they created a place for the homeless and hurting, a place that would provide a bed and meal, but more importantly, an opportunity for those in our care to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ and the hope He brings. That vision remains today! The transforming power of the Gospel is seen in the faces of our clients and heard in their testimonies at every graduation. We have the privilege of seeing countless lives healed of addiction, abuse, anxiety and depression. And we cheer as these transformed lives move from the Mission to lead productive lives, impacting the world around them for Christ. As a board we serve with the confident expectation that God is actively pursuing the heart of every person in our care, and we believe that the long-established programs of the LBRM, which bring spiritual direction to work therapy, technical and academic training, addiction counseling, and life skills training, to name a few, continue to provide the very best environment for life change. Thank you for your faithful contributions and volunteer hours which make it possible for us to serve our community. It is a privilege to partner with you as we seek to change lives for Christ! With gratitude, Kristen N. Jones Kristen N. DONATE Long Beach Rescue Mission HOME A Mission to Serve At Long Beach Rescue Mission, we provide a safe haven for women and children facing abuse, addiction, financial hardship, and abandonment. Lydia House has long been a sanctuary for those in need, offering shelter, love, and support to rebuild lives. However, with nearly 45% of the homeless population in our community being women and children, our current capacity of 50 beds is simply not enough to meet the need. Every day, we turn away families desperate for help. We are launching a capital campaign to expand Lydia House, more than doubling our capacity to ensure no woman or child is ever turned away. This project is more than an expansion; it's a chance to create a sanctuary where Christ’s love is felt in every space. The Need The need for expanded services at Lydia House has never been greater. With limited capacity, many women and children are left vulnerable to further trauma. By increasing our capacity and enhancing facilities, we will offer more women and children a path to stability and hope. The Vision This expansion is not just about increasing the number of beds; it’s about creating a nurturing environment where women and children can experience the transformative love of Christ. Key features of the expansion include: 60 new beds – Doubling our current capacity to provide shelter for more women and children. Multipurpose room – A space for dining, fellowship, and worship, fostering community and spiritual nourishment. Outdoor seating patios – Peaceful areas for reflection and connection with God and one another.
