Dr. Montessori was the first woman to graduate from the University of Rome La Sapienza Medical School, becoming the first female doctor in Italy. Her main contributions to the work of raising and educating children are in the following areas: Preparing the most natural and life-supporting environments for the child. Observing the child living freely in this environment. Continually adapting the environment in order that the child may fulfill his or her greatest potential, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Dr. Maria Montessori believed, “Education is a natural process carried out by the human individual, and is acquired not by listening to words, but by experiences in the environment.” She was focused on teaching the student’s ways to develop their own skills at a pace they set, a principle Montessori called “spontaneous self-development”. A wide variety of materials which increase in complexity is used to help direct the interests of the child and haste development. During World War II, Dr. Montessori developed many of the ideas taught in training courses today. She was twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Dr. Maria Montessori died in the Netherlands in 1952, after a lifetime devoted to the study of child development. Her early work centered on women’s rights and social reform and evolved to encompass a totally innovative approach to education. Her success in Italy led to international recognition, and for over 40 years she traveled all over the world, lecturing, writing and establishing training programs. Since her death, an interest in Dr. Montessori’s methods have continued to spread throughout the world. Her message to educators and parents has been to turn one’s attention to the child, to “follow the child”. It is because of this basic principle, and the observation guidelines left by her, that Dr. Montessori’s ideas have carried on. Learn and Play’s BeeCurious curriculum framework, used at our Moraga and Pleasant Hill locations, celebrates learning as a joyful experience and aligns with children’s natural curiosities.  It provides children autonomy through choices, guided explorations, and multiple forms of expression. Curiosity is captured through anecdotal records and educator observations as the children explore, create, discover, and dive into learning. Through play-based learning, inquiry learning is nurtured. The new Learning Framework allows children to explore the world around them, examining their environments and fostering their innate curiosity through hands-on interactions of their individual journey of learning.  It creates awareness of self, others, cultural diversity, global stewardship, community, and the natural environments.  Setting the foundation for self-aware, open-minded, well-rounded children to thrive in a dynamic, diverse, global society. Holistic Curriculum The new framework integrates multi-disciplinary elements to create a holistic approach to learning providing children with a plethora of enriching experiences. Daily feature activities include Math Discovery, Creative Discovery, Physical Literacy, Language and Literacy, and Building Connections, through which children learn social-emotional skills and their sense of value and belonging in a learning community. Integrated Activities spread throughout each month include Essential Skills (self-care, self-regulation, problem solving), Sign Language, and Artists of the Month. Enrichment programs are also featured throughout every week.  These include: Global Citizenship: Activities that honor diversity, celebrate cultural differences, and build a sense of belonging and worthiness Environmental Stewardship: Activities that guide children to understand the need to care for, respect, preserve and protect all parts of the natural environment STEM: Activities focus on the embedded domains of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, building creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills Inspiring Learning Environments Our environments are intentionally designed with traditional learning areas such as blocks and building, dramatic play, sensorial, and creativity with new added focus on ethnic & cultural, science & nature, math & manipulatives, and language & literacy. Additionally, our environments are created using natural materials, including wood, stone, and recycled plastic to provide children with more sensory-rich experiences while continuing to be an environmentally friendly and sustainable company. Warm learning areas are created to encourage small group interaction, and more focused, engaged exploration. Learning areas are supported with authentic, real-life items to ignite curiosity and motivation for children to explore. Intentional Teaching Practice The educator’s delivery of this curriculum is fundamental to its success.  It includes supporting children to discover themselves and their surroundings, guiding possibilities and nurturing personalized learning discoveries, while broadening social skills and emotional intelligence. Educators will support education that does not separate play from learning but draws upon the common ground in order to promote creativity. The teachers are very friendly and loving, and their academics are respectable while letting the children have fun. I especially appreciated her teachers encouraging her to become more social. It’s amazing to see my daughter enjoys to read and write over watching TV or playing with iPad." Tiffany S. Fremont, CA “Well it’s just about a month here and we are already loving how much our kid is learning. I always admire how much kids follow the discipline with accuracy. I highly recommend this place.” Laxmi G. Fremont, CA “Our family’s experience spans over four years now. First with our 5 year old who is now in kindergarten and currently with our 2 year old. In this time, Learn and Play Montessori has been nothing short of incredible. EVERYONE has always been very attentive, understanding and professional. Overall, I would not hesitate for a moment to give the highest praise. Thanks again for taking such great interest and care in my children’s days. Scott G. Fremont, CA “My heart is so full of joy right now. I just dropped off my child to his classroom and he immediately ran off and joined circle time with a big smile on his face and started singing rhymes along with the other kids. I decided to move my son here from another private institution and I feel that was one of the best decisions I’ve made as a mother for my child. I’ve never gotten the feeling that I’m just a financial transaction for this school- they genuinely care about the well being of your child.” Ginni J. Fremont, CA “I love the Montessori curriculum! My daughter comes home telling me about amphibians, Africa, planting radishes, and telling me what 4 + 5 equals. It’s so well rounded and yet so practical! My daughter is a generally well behaved child but she has absolutely blossomed in this environment. If you are looking for an amazing preschool with absolutely wonderful teachers and an atmosphere that feels like a elementary school – this is the place for you!” Ellena M. Milpitas, CA “Consistently, the teachers have been invested in my daughter’s growth and she has developed so much thanks to each teacher’s guidance, patience, and support.” Stephanie S. San Francisco, CA "I L-O-V-E this school. The staff is amazing. They genuinely care about each kid from the front desk staff to the teachers and chefs, everyone is just incredible. The classrooms all encourage independent learning and they inspire kids to learn and grow in their own way and on their own time. You won’t find a better school in the area. I’ve looked at them all before finding this gem!" Samantha D. San Francisco, CA “My son has been attending LAPMS Niles since September and he is very happy and enjoys coming to school every day. It’s a beautiful campus with great play structures and wonderful staff. Highly recommended!” M. These creative activities are offered to assist the child in developing a sense of order, concentration, independence, fine motor skills, grace, courtesy, confidence, self esteem, and respect for others. The activities build a child’s concentration as well as prepare the child for writing and language. Sensorial All learning first comes through the senses. There are many different Montessori sensorial materials and activities designed to help the child refine the tactile, visual, auditory, olfactory, and gustatory senses. The child will develop skills in thinking, judgment, concentration, comparing and sequencing. This prepares them for more complex learning in other areas such as math and language. Language The language curriculum includes everything – from vocabulary development to writing to reading. Through multiple language arts activities, a child will learn the alphabet, phonetic sounds, reading and writing, irregular or sight words, phonograms and blends. Our Montessori teachers will also involve the child in public speaking and reciting poetry. Mathematics Children go from a concrete understanding of mathematics to an abstract understanding of mathematics via mathematical concepts. Through activities that incorporate the use of concrete materials children learn to count and then systematically progress to solving complex addition, subtraction, multiplication and division equations, and they learn the exchange of quantities.   Cultural/Geography This includes studies of the world and other cultures through photographs, molds, globes, flags and puzzles. Montessori children achieve early understanding of the concepts of continent, country, and state, land, water, air, world’s regions and the names of many countries of the world. More important, the goal is acquiring an understanding of the world’s other cultures and what they offer. Science Botany activities are child-centered using live plants, seedlings, flowers, and fruits – to help them develop an appreciation for the delicate balance of nature. Zoology activities develop the children’s fascination with animals and teach them to respect animals’ needs and habits. The scientific activities are a fun way to develop skills of predicting and analyzing. Art Art is an area where the students can freely express themselves through the use of many materials. Art appreciation is also a part of the curriculum. The children will be introduced to different artists and various mediums of art. Music Enrichment Activities Music and singing are part of the scheduled activities to help the child develop an appreciation for sounds and melody. Language The most important language materials for a toddler are the materials and experiences in the child’s environment. For the toddler, written language is experienced through the teacher’s oral reading and story time. Children also learn language through matching cards, vocabulary cards, stories, size and shape discrimination exercises, picture-word cards, and by isolating initial sounds. Activities include books, puzzles, naming objects, nursery rhymes and songs. Math Toddler’s minds are full of energy that propels them to absorb, manipulate, classify, order, sequence, abstract, and repeat. We make this enjoyable for toddlers by providing these every day activities: Counting activities: Singing songs Counting animals, shapes, fingers, objects in the environment, etc. Concept of Time: Daily routine Periods of the day (morning, afternoon, evening) Seasons Practical Life Most children are interested in practical life activities because the activities respond to all the important periods of early childhood development. Practical life activities build a foundation on which the toddlers learn to gain control of their large and small motor skills and hand-to-eye coordination. This area will allow the toddler to develop his/her sense of independence. Sensorial Life The Toddler program places far more emphasis on the Sensorial Curriculum. The Sensorial activities challenge the toddler to match and distinguish objects by size, shape, color and solve simple puzzles. Toddlers love sensorial exploration of water, sand, play dough, textured objects, and the smell of flowers. Science Science for the toddler means activities where the child can directly observe and manipulate physical properties. When children can manipulate materials and equipment and discover on their own, they feel a great sense of mastery and positive satisfaction which helps build their self-concepts. Toddlers will explore: Life Science: Plant care Nature walks Living vs. nonliving Life cycles Physical Science: Sink and float activities Gravity Magnetic v. nonmagnetic Color mixing Weight/balance Earth Science: Water properties Weather/seasons Oceans Rocks Second Language: Spanish Children acquire new languages most naturally at this age as all languages simply contribute to their word bank. The Spanish curriculum uses a combination of speaking, music and art to allow children to be exposed to a second language. Toddlers will be introduced to numbers, colors, songs, and basic vocabulary in Spanish. Cultural Studies: History and Geography This includes studies of the world and other cultures through photographs, molds, globes, flags and puzzles. Montessori children achieve early understanding of the concepts of continent, country, and state world’s regions and the names of many countries of the world. More important, the goal is acquiring an understanding of the world’s other cultures and what they offer. Visual Arts The toddler is able to use various materials to express creativity and to enhance fine motor skills such as coloring, gluing, cutting, drawing, and painting. Music The music curriculum seeks to foster a love for music. Toddlers are learning language, so they are interested in the lyrics as well as the melody and rhythm. The music curriculum offers early exposure for music appreciation. Movement Arts Movement Arts seeks to benefit all children. We focus on the development of gross motor skills and following directions in a group. Toddlers clap, roll, jump, bend, stretch, dance, and hop. Movement is fun and exploration is exciting. What is Montessori? Montessori is a comprehensive educational approach from birth to adulthood, based on the observation of children’s needs in a variety of cultures all around the world. Beginning her work almost a century ago, Dr. Maria Montessori developed this educational approach based on her understanding of children’s natural learning tendencies as they unfold in “prepared environments” for multi-age groups (0-3, 3-6, 6-9, 9-12, and 12-14). The Montessori environment contains specially designed, manipulative “materials for development” that invite children to engage in learning activities of their own individual choice. Under the guidance of a trained teacher, children in a Montessori classroom learn by making discoveries with the materials, cultivating concentration, motivation, self-discipline, and a love of learning. Why should I send my child to a Montessori School? Dr. Maria Montessori believed that the most important years of a child’s education are not the years of high school and college, but the first six years of life. As a result, Montessori schools regard infant and early childhood education as the very foundation of everything that follows. A child’s mind is absorbent, and his curiosity is at a peak during these early years. When properly nourished and stimulated, the child’s mind forms patterns of learning which serve him throughout his life. A Montessori school provides one of the most effective environments in which to guide a child through these critical years. What is the difference between Montessori and traditional education? For children under six years old, Montessori emphasizes learning through all five senses, not just through listening, watching, or reading. Children in Montessori classes learn at their own, individual pace and according to their own choice of activities from hundreds of possibilities. They are not required to sit and listen to a teacher talk to them as a group, but are engaged in individual or group activities of their own, with materials that have been introduced to them 1:1 by the teacher who knows what each child is ready to do. Children choose their work from among the self-correcting materials displayed on open shelves, and they work in specific work areas. The materials and exercises are designed to stimulate independent exploration. More experienced children share what they have learned while reinforcing their own learning. Because this peer group learning, there is often more conversation in the Montessori classroom than in conventional early education settings. Learning is an exciting process of discovery, leading to concentration, motivation, self-discipline, and a love of learning. Why are there children of different ages in each classroom? Montessori education theory supports multi age grouping. The basic fact is that children learn from one another. This can be seen in family and play situations where children are free to observe and interact in a variety of activities. Young children learn higher level cognitive and social skills not only through mental development, but also by observing others as models. Montessori multi-age classrooms usually incorporate a three-year age span based on similarities in physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development. Multi-age grouping helps children develop a sense of community and supports social development. Older children act as models and sometimes teachers of younger children. This aids development of personality, collaboration, and cooperation. There is less anxious competition because all children are not expected to have identical skills and perform equally. This leads to respect for the individuality of each person in the group and recognition that each child has unique strengths and contributions to offer the group. Comparisons are not made, and cooperation is encouraged, thus accommodating the uneven development, which is especially evident in the birth to eight-age range. How does the Montessori classroom work? Each Montessori class operates on the principle of “freedom within limits”. Every program has its set of ground rules based on core Montessori beliefs – respect for each other and for the environment. Children work at their own pace with materials they choose, either alone or with others. The teacher guides the child toward new activities and materials when he or she thinks the child is ready. The goal is to encourage active, self-directed learning that aims at mastering tasks. The multi-age grouping in each class provides a family-like grouping where learning can take place naturally. Common misconceptions about Montessori education Montessori is just for special learners–the gifted or the learning-disabled.   The methods used in Montessori schools are highly effective with both learning-disabled and gifted learners; the reason for their effectiveness, however, is that the learning environments have been designed to ensure success for all children. Montessori schools are religious.   Many private American Montessori schools do have a religious orientation. But Montessori itself is not religiously oriented and Learn and Play Montessori is not religious. Children in Montessori classrooms are relatively unsupervised and can “do whatever they want.”   Montessori is based on the principle of free choice of purposeful activity. If the child is being destructive or is using materials in an aimless way, the teacher will intervene and gently re-direct the child either to more appropriate materials or to a more appropriate use of the material. There is always freedom within limits in a Montessori classroom. Guidelines, ground rules, and work plans are always part of Montessori education. What can I read to familiarize myself with Montessori philosophy? There are many excellent books to choose from, however, we recommend beginning with these: The Secret of Childhood by Dr. Maria Montessori The Montessori Method by Dr. Maria Montessori Dr. Maria Montessori’s Own Handbook by Dr. Maria Montessori The Discovery of the Child by Dr. Maria Montessori Spontaneous Activity in Education by Dr. Maria Montessori What does tuition cost? Our programs are affordable, based on the amount of time needed for your child. Explore our tuition pages to browse costs and rates, or feel free to contact each school for up-to-date rates and tuition. How do I enroll my child at a school? The best first step is to call the office and ask any questions. You can also sign up for a school tour, and if you’re ready, at that time we can give you the paperwork and forms to fill out. Enrollment is easy, but of course forms are required. Contact us today to learn about how Montessori can help your child succeed! They are able to achieve this by manipulating, experimenting, and discovering through Montessori materials and prepared environment. Children begin to move from the concrete to the abstract as they prepare for the more complex studies used in our Montessori Kindergarten program.   Montessori Preschool: Summing Up We’re very proud of our Montessori preschool programs in Danville, Fremont, and Dublin. All learning first comes through the senses. There are many different Montessori sensorial materials and activities designed to help the child refine the tactile, visual, auditory, olfactory, and gustatory senses. The child will develop skills in thinking, judgment, and spatial awareness. This prepares them for more complex learning in other areas such as math and language. Students learn to distinguish and differentiate sensorial properties through: Auditory learning Different Sounds Visual learning Color Size Shape Gradation Identification Comparison Tactile learning Texture Weight Temperature   Visual Arts Students become familiar and comfortable working with a variety of materials such as pencil, crayon, paints, and clay in various techniques. Montessori educational practice helps children develop creativity, problem solving, critical thinking and time-management skills, and care of the environment and each other. Our programs are “Montessori-inspired,” combining the philosophy of Montessori with a focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) in age-approrpate ways. We help kids set up a foundation for lifetime learning and lifetime success in the modern society and modern economy. In the affluent and educated Bay Area, parents have come to recognize that a Montessori School program (whether that be a Montessori Kindergarten or just Montessori   Daycare   or Montessori   child care ) is a superior way to give their children a headstart. We have many parents, not only in Danville,   Milpitas , or   South Fremont , but also in Fremont or Dublin CA, who bring their children to us for Montessori childcare or Montessori daycare and then stay through Montessori Kindergarten in Danville, Fremont, or Dublin. Indeed, many busy commuters have discovered that the “best” Montessori school in Blackhawk, Diablo, or San Ramon isn’t actually “in” that city but rather in Danville, at our beautiful Danville campus which is easy to 680 commuters. The same is true in Fremont, Milpitas, and other East Bay cities – our programs are close to key commuting routes, making us a top choice for parents. The Montessori Toddler, Preschool, PreK and Kindergarten classrooms provide a prepared environment in where children can be driven naturally to work and learn. Reach out for a campus tour to our Danville, Fremont, or Dublin campus, today. You’ll see that the children’s inherent love of learning is encouraged by giving them the opportunity to be spontaneous, and engage in meaningful activities. Through their work children develop concentration, motivation, persistence, and discipline. Within this framework of order they progress at their pace and rhythm according to their individual capabilities. Being the Best Montessori School in the East Bay We’re proud citizens of the San Francisco Bay Area, especially the so-called “East Bay” region of Fremont, Pleasanton, and the Tri-Valley. We have some of the best Montessori school programs not only in Danville, Dublin, or Fremont (where we have our campuses), but also in nearby cities such as Alamo, Blackhawk, or San Ramon. We even have busy Walnut Creek commuters who search for the best Montessori in Walnut Creek and discover our “680 friendly” Danville campus is an excellent choice. If you’re interested in a Montessori school, reach out to us, today, for a campus tour. The Montessori Method is based on observations of the nature of the child and offers the child a maximum spontaneity in choice of physical and mental activity. Nevertheless the child reaches the same or higher levels of scholastic attainment as under traditional systems. Each child works at his own pace. The quick are not held back nor are the slow pressured. There is much opportunity for group work. The Montessori Method enables the teacher to guide each child individually in each subject according to his own individual requirements. It allows the child to grow in biological independence by respecting his/her needs and removing undue influence of the adult. It allows the child a large measure of liberty based on respect for the rights of others. The Montessori Method does away with competition as a major motivation for learning. The child competes with himself/herself. It presents endless opportunities for mutual work and help–these joyfully given and received. The child works from his own free choice. This choice is preceded by knowledge and is thus a real choice. The Montessori Method develops the whole personality of the child, not merely his intellectual faculties but also his powers and deliberation, initiative and independent choice, with their emotional complements. By living as a free member of a real social community, the child is trained in those fundamental social qualities which form the basis of good citizenship. Others already know that they want a Montessori Kindergarten, and then look for one that is both highly rated and convenient to their home in Diablo, Blackhawk or San Ramon. Use this page to learn about our Montessori Kindergarten curriculum. The Kindergarten curriculum closely follows the principles of Montessori education. Our holistic approach to education is evident as we support the opportunities for development socially, physically, intellectually and emotionally for each child. Children are able to move on when ready for a new challenge. Therefore, lessons are presented in small groups to the children and through observation, the teacher determines when the child has internalized a concept and is ready for a new concept. The kindergarten year highlights critical thinking, independence, comprehension, and preparedness for elementary. In summary, we’re proud to be known as not only one of the best kindergarten programs in our home cities of Danville, Fremont, and Dublin but as one of the best Montessori Kindergarten programs not only in those cities but in nearby towns such as Blackhawk, Alamo, or even San Ramon. If you’re interested in exploring Montessori Kindergarten for your child and you live nearby to Danville, Fremont, or Dublin (or it’s on your busy commute from Walnut Creek or Blackhawk), reach out to us today for a complementary school tour. We’re happy to meet you as a parent and showcase not only our beautiful Montessori Kindergarten facilities but our world-class teachers and pupils! Language The language curriculum progresses from oral language activities and pre-reading work to writing and eventually to reading comprehension. Language studies include the development of listening skills, comprehension and vocabulary as well as the ability to express oneself with confidence. The materials for written language introduce the child to the letters of the alphabet and their sounds. The child then goes on to compose words and sentences using the moveable alphabet. All aspects of language development are occurring instantaneously and it is the teacher’s role to observe readiness for each new lesson.  Language studies include: Oral Preparation: Conversational speech Student Presentations Speaking in front of peers Storytelling Vocabulary enrichment Listening skills and comprehension Literature: Listening Skills Creative Stories Reading Fiction, Non-fiction, and Poetry Writing: Spelling Capitalization Punctuation Handwriting Manuscript Introduction to cursive Reading: Phonics Blends Sight Words Phonogram sounds Reading in context Vocabulary of objects, attributes, and actions Word building skills Introduction of noun identification Introduction of verb identification Compound words Plurals Math Children go from a concrete understanding of mathematics to an abstract understanding of mathematics through various mathematical concepts. Through activities that incorporate the use of concrete materials children learn to count and then systematically progress to solving complex addition, subtraction, multiplication and division equations. Children will learn number recognition, sequencing place value, and the exchange of quantities. Math studies include: Concrete materials to explore place value: Units Tens Hundreds Thousands Concrete materials to perform operations: Addition Subtraction Multiplication Division Written numerals 1-1000 Skip counting Fractions Measurement Money Time Geometric plane figures: Circles Squares and rectangles Triangle Quadrilaterals Polygons Curved figures Study of geometric solids Practical Life The Practical Life Curriculum increases a child’s concentration, coordination, fine and gross motor skills, sense of order, building the process of finishing an assignment. These experiences lead to the development of independence and foster relationships with others. The activities build a child’s concentration as well as prepare the child for writing and language. Respect and care of environment Indoor and outdoor Recycling Grace, courtesy, and etiquette Caring about others Problem solving Conflict resolution Independence Care of person Health and safety Nutrition and food preparation Community Service Developing an awareness of needs of others Participating in several service projects throughout the school year Sensorial Life Sensorial materials are used to develop the child’s five senses. They allow the children the opportunity to sort things by size, shape, color, touch, sound, temperature, and weight. For example they can grade materials from dark to light and from large to small. The materials are self- correcting, promoting independence in the child’s work. Montessori sensorial apparatus teaches children to classify their sensorial impressions in an organized, orderly, and scientific manner through: Auditory learning Different Sounds Visual learning Color Size Shape Gradation Identification Comparison Tactile learning Texture Weight Temperature Visual Arts Our students are encouraged to explore the many art materials available at all times in the classroom: tempera paints, watercolors, pencils, crayons, chalk, found materials from walks in the park. Our students learn other art forms as well, such as weaving, collage, and papier-mâché. They study the work of various artists and different elements of art such as shape, color, and texture. Science The Science materials present certain aspects of this world, in such a way that the child can observe, experiment, demonstrate, and record what they learn. Science is hands-on activities that include Life Science, Earth Science, and Physical Science. In science the children’s natural curiosity is inspired through discovery projects and experiments, helping the children draw their own conclusions. The plant and animal kingdoms are studied in an orderly fashion to foster a love and appreciation for all living things. Science studies and materials enable the child to observe, explore and perform experiments in all or more areas of: Zoology: Vertebrate and invertebrate classification, characteristics, and internal/external parts Animal kingdom Botany: Parts of plant – advanced Experiments Botany charts Plant kingdom Vegetable and flower gardening Anatomy: Parts of the body Systems of the body Physical Science : Experiments relative to the formation of the universe and earth State of matter Gravity Temperature Density Chemical reactions Properties of water Magnetism Earth Science : Water properties Weather/seasons Oceans Rocks Scientific Reasoning and Technology Observation skills Science Experiments Second Language: Spanish The Spanish curriculum uses a combination of speaking, singing, listening, and writing activities. Learning a foreign language is an enjoyable experience for our children. Children acquire: Vocabulary Numbers Colors Calendar (days, months, seasons) Animals Parts of the body Spanish songs Questions and answers in Spanish Cultural Studies: History and Geography The classroom integrates cultural studies through literature, activities, and materials.
