Individuals live in their own apartment or house, and Lifehouse provides staff support. The amount and type of support provided is catered according to the persons needs. Some areas of support may include domestic skills, financial management, social skills, health and hygiene, community integration, transportation skills, and vocation and personal growth. Training that focuses on educational and vocational skills is provided in appropriate locations, and individuals will typically go to work or to a day program during the day. The people we support reside in various types of living arrangements, including integrated apartments, specially designated HUD-funded apartment complexes, or self-owned condominiums.   Intermediate Care Facilities(ICF) Short Description: Two group homes that are staffed to provide intensive personal care and medical support to individuals with multiple disabilities Details: Residents living in Intermediate Care Facilities receive 24-hour care from trained staff with a ratio of two or three residents to one staff member with one overnight staff member who performs regular checks. These homes are funded by Medi-Cal . Each resident is supported by a team of professionals, including a registered nurse, physician, behavioral specialist, dietician, and regional center social worker. The team designs an Individual Service Plan (ISP) for each person based on his or her specific needs. This tailored plan consists of goals and objectives to teach each person important skills in hygiene, habit training, safety, community awareness, communication, social skills, and other areas of focus. Residents attend day programs during the day. Lifehouse also provides many opportunities for residents to be active in the community with assistance in leisure activities of their choice. Prader Willi Program Short Description: The de Lone House offers a high standard of 1:1 care for individuals with Prader Willi Syndrome Details: As the first Prader Willi Syndrome program in Marin County, the de Lone house offers an enriched high standard of care with emphases on staying active, behavioral support, and food security. Enrolled individuals engage in weekly activities such as training for the Special Olympics, horseback riding, trips to the San Francisco Zoo, and volunteering at Guide Dogs for the Blind. Historically, individuals with Prader Willi have had limited options for care, and the de Lone House aims to give individuals supported a real chance at independence and community integration with less restrictions than licensed facilities while maintaining a robust precision of care focused on maintaining a healthy, balanced life. Independant Living Skills (ILS) Short Description: Independent Living Skills (ILS) services provide training and assistance for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) to achieve greater independence while living with others or to acquire and maintain living independently. Counselors provide training in domestic skills, financial management, health and hygiene, social skills, community integration, and vocational development—offered both at home and in real-world settings such as banks, grocery stores, and public offices. Services also include guidance in navigating medical, dental, and government systems, empowering each person to reach their full potential and lead a fulfilling life in the community.   Adult Residential Facility (ARF) Short Description: Two licensed group homes designed to provide training and promote independence Details : Lifehouse’s two training homes provide an educational environment for adults, 18 years old and above, to develop the necessary skills required for increased independence living within a community. Each house accommodates six individuals and is licensed by the Department of Social Services Community Care Division . Between 9:00am and 3:00pm, residents go out to day programs. Guests enjoyed a delicious meal catered by The Pasta King, danced along to live music from Zack and the Cromotones, and shared smiles with a visit from Sonoma Santa. Community volunteers added an extra touch of warmth by baking homemade cookies for everyone to enjoy. We’re especially grateful to Janet Franklin, our volunteer photographer, for beautifully capturing the joy, laughter, and meaningful moments that made the day so special. This celebration was a reminder of what the holidays, and Lifehouse, are all about: community, inclusion, and shared joy. Photos by Janet Franklin December 15, 2025 LIfehouse Agency December 8, 2025 LIfehouse Agency RECREATION EXPANDS AT LIFEHOUSE December 8, 2025 LIfehouse Agency Social isolation is one of the most pressing challenges faced by individuals with I/DD. Many teens and young adults with I/DD struggle to form friendships due to limited inclusive opportunities, lack of accessible programming, and societal barriers. Unlike their neurotypical peers, individuals with I/DD often do not have access to after-school hangouts, recreational sports, or informal peer gatherings. Parents also face social isolation, often navigating the challenges of advocacy and care alone. RecLife, an inclusive recreation and volunteer program addresses both of these issues: providing an inclusive, safe, and fun environment for young people to build friendships, while also creating a space for families to connect and find mutual support. RecLife Recreation & Volunteer Programs RecLife teens and young adults participate in scheduling of events each month. The activities include bowling, hiking, SMART train trips, movie nights, music, arts and crafts. Participants who engage in RecLife build friendships, confidence, and life skills that carry into adulthood. These experiences can reduce dependency, support job readiness, and increase long-term quality of life. They foster a more inclusive community that values diversity and connection. The RecLife volunteer program creates structured, supported volunteer roles for young people with I/DD, giving them the chance to participate, give back, and feel a true sense of belonging. Through this program, participants build life skills, make social connections, and take pride in their ability to contribute to the world around them. We are deeply grateful to the Lindskog Foundation for their generous support of our recreation program for teens and young adults with I/DD. For a second year, their grant is helping us not only sustain but expand opportunities for connection, growth, and joy among the young people we serve. Their commitment to inclusion and enrichment is making a profound difference in the lives of all the participants of RecLife, and we are honored to partner with the Lindskog Foundation in this important work. Thank you for believing in our mission, and investing in a brighter, more fulfilling future for all. Most people with I/DD lived in group homes, settings that, while often providing necessary care, offered limited opportunities for autonomy and personal decision-making. At that time, group homes were viewed as a transitional step, not a permanent solution, and there were few alternatives. However, thanks to the vision and leadership of Lifehouse, that began to change. Robin Lollick, Tanya Noske, Gail Williams In 2004, Lifehouse launched the first Supported Living Services (SLS) program in Northern California, a transformative initiative that gave people with I/DD the chance to live independently in their own homes with customized support. The spark behind this innovation was Nancy Dow Moody, who was then the Vice President at Lifehouse, and had joined the organization in 1992. Nancy brought with her a unique perspective. Prior to her work in California, she had been involved in the very first SLS program in Massachusetts. She recognized that while California had a strong service network, it lacked a crucial piece, support that allowed people with I/DD to move beyond institutional or group living and into fully integrated community life. Seeing the need and the potential, Nancy authored a Request for Proposal (RFP) in 2003 to the Golden Gate Regional Center to launch a supported living model through Lifehouse. The proposal was approved, and with it, a movement was born. Lifehouse began its Supported Living Services program with just eight individuals, each eager to take steps toward greater independence. The program was led by Dori McDonnell, a dedicated and compassionate manager who worked closely with the individuals and their families to ensure smooth transitions and meaningful support. One of those first participants was Patricia Drake, who is pictured alongside Dori in an early snapshot of the program’s success. Dori McDonnell and Patricia Drake From modest beginnings, the impact of Lifehouse’s SLS program has been profound. Today, Lifehouse supports more than 200 individuals through its SLS program, making it the largest of its kind in California. More importantly, the model Lifehouse pioneered has inspired countless others across California. Supported Living Services have now become an essential part of the service spectrum across the state, offering thousands of people with I/DD the chance to live in homes of their own choosing, with dignity, purpose, and freedom. Stephanie Caires, Allison Jones, Nancy Dow Moody, Katie Buster Lifehouse’s pioneering efforts didn’t just create a program, they helped shift the paradigm of care in California. Thank you to visionary leaders like Dori, former Lifehouse Manager, and Nancy, who has served as President and CEO of Lifehouse since 2008, and the brave individuals who took that first step toward independence. Supported Living Services are now a cornerstone of disability support statewide. This landmark law secures new privacy rights for California consumers, including: The right to know about the personal information a business collects about them and how it is used and shared; The right to delete personal information collected from them (with some exceptions); The right to opt-out of the sale or sharing of their personal information including via the GPC ; The right to non-discrimination for exercising their CCPA rights. In November of 2020, California voters approved Proposition 24, the CPRA , which amended the CCPA and added new additional privacy protections that began on January 1, 2023. As of January 1, 2023, consumers have new rights in addition to those above, such as: The right to correct inaccurate personal information that a business has about them; and The right to limit the use and disclosure of sensitive personal information collected about them. Lifehouse has been at the great intersection of hopes and dreams for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) for the past 68 years. With the capital campaign, Home for Life: Campaign for a Permanent Home for Lifehouse , the purchase and renovation of 18 Professional Center Parkway is a permanent hub for our community offering a lifetime of service and support. Please join us in realizing our next great chapter. Donate Lifehouse has served the needs of individuals with I/DD since 1954. In this time we have evolved from a small school launched by parents who believed their children could live and learn well in the community, to a thriving organization serving more than 320 adults and 50 children. We believe all individuals deserve the right to independent lives filled with integrity, joy and aspiration. Our array of services support this belief and offer different approaches to meet the requirements of each individual. Today we are building our own foundation and independence for life. By acquiring and refurbishing this 9,190 sq. ft. office building in San Rafael, we are now able to help control operating costs and provide a permanent home from which we can offer our life-time services. The Lifehouse monthly mortgage now costs less than our previous leased offices. The Lifehouse building has over 3000 sq ft additional office space. Lifehouse has been compelled to move offices every six years due to  increased lease costs and increased capacity needs. In this permanent home, Lifehouse is now seen as an anchor in the community. The monthly cost savings translates to direct service enhancements. Lifehouse now has a secure asset on its books and increased financial security. Floor Plan by Uesugi & Associates The acquisition for Lifehouse offers several advantage for its growing staff: Lifehouse is a vital resource for the San Francisco Bay Area. Building ownership stabilizes the organization’s long-term presence in the region where it serves individuals with I/DD for lifetimes of required care. Training rooms with flexible seating structures provide trainings not only for Lifehouse participants and staff but also for other care providers in the special-needs community, leveraging Lifehouse’s expertise and experience to assist other organizations serving similar populations. The permanent “home” for Lifehouse professionalizes the services and providers of this sector. The permanent home also offers the Bay Area a symbol of its diversity, optimism and the dignity it affords a traditionally “unseen” community. Lifehouse employs 500 individuals, most of whom are direct care providers to the over 370 individuals who receive services from Lifehouse. The new building houses staff and provides touchdown work stations, training center and support-team meeting areas for the direct care professionals. He loves going for walks with his Lifehouse staff, and is well known in the small community he lives in. But, life has not been easy for Michael. Following a medical accident at birth we didn’t know what to expect for his future. Now, at 6’4” and 250 lbs., Michael has the mind of a 2-year-old with a low threshold for frustration. Like many people in Michael’s situation he has challenging behaviors, frequently triggered by dealing with people who don’t understand him. As Michael completed his school years, we were also facing other medical issues in our family and it was apparent we needed to plan for his future independent from us. It was difficult to imagine and understand how it would be possible for Michael to thrive outside of our family environment. Our desire was to support Michael’s future happiness in a lively, social environment with people that would understand him and his needs, and help him to achieve a happy and fulfilling life. But who could possibly step in to support this role? This was our greatest fear - who would be patient with him, take the time to learn his unique communication, understand his language, his wants and desires, and care for him? Who would love our son? Finding Lifehouse 8 years ago was a revelation. The team has been incredibly dedicated and caring, supporting Michael through good times and difficult ones over these years. This amazing team, from the managers to the direct support staff, has added so much to his life and Michael is thriving in a lovely home with two roommates. As a group the Lifehouse staff works together to support each other with the same care and understanding, leading to improved stability, cohesiveness, and continuity. We all benefit! The peace of mind we have today is profound, in knowing that Michael is appreciated for who he is, and that he is loved and cared for. Lifehouse has added stability not only to Michael’s life, but to our entire family as well. We feel such joy in seeing that his life can be happy and fulfilling even when we are not here to share his laughter and smiling face. There are many families with hopes, dreams, challenges and fears like ours. Lifehouse and its future is critical to ensure this invaluable resource remains strong and solid. Please join us in supporting this amazing organization! Bequests: You may bequeath cash, securities, real estate, or other assets to Lifehouse in your will or trust. You decide how - whether it's a certain amount, a percentage, or the residue of your estate after other bequests. 2. Life Insurance: You can name Lifehouse as the beneficiary of your life insurance policy or transfer the ownership of a paid-up policy to Lifehouse. 3. Retirement Assets: You can gift your retirement assets such as an IRA, 401(k), or 403(b) by naming Lifehouse as a beneficiary. 4. Gifts of cash and/or other assets with income reserved for the life of the donor and /or another beneficiary. These types of gifts can take the following forms: Charitable gift annuity: You can place cash or property into a trust that will provide an income for you (or another named individual) for life, with the remainder of the trust going to Lifehouse at the end of the trust term D eferred charitable gift annuity: Allows you to make a gift to Lifehouse while receiving a fixed income stream later, typically at retirement or another designated time Charitable remainder trust: You can set up an irrevocable trust that allows you to donate assets to Lifehouse while receiving income for life or a specified period. The remaining assets are then donated to Lifehouse upon the death of the beneficiary or the end of the trust term Pooled income fund agreement: You can contribute to a charitable trust that allows donors to pool their assets and receive income for life while benefiting Lifehouse with a remainder interest We strongly recommend you consult with your financial advisor or attorney to understand the potential benefits so that you can choose the options that reflect your values and estate planning needs. As a caregiving organization supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), we believe true inclusion means creating a community where everyone—those we serve, our staff, and our partners—feels valued, respected, and empowered. At Lifehouse, we believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) make our workplace stronger and more supportive for everyone: Diversity includes everyone from all backgrounds Equity ensures that everyone has the opportunity to grow and succeed Inclusion helps everyone feel like they belong We draw strength from the incredible diversity of our team. Every day, our staff brings a wide range of backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives to their work. Maintaining a respectful and inclusive environment is essential to delivering the high-quality, person-centered care that defines Lifehouse. While national conversations around DEI continue to shift, our commitment remains unwavering. We know that a strong culture of inclusion directly enhances the care we provide and strengthens the communities we serve. As part of this commitment, we’re proud to launch a new DEI training program for all employees. Held monthly via Zoom, each session features interactive activities and breakout groups designed to foster meaningful dialogue and support inclusive practices across our organization. This training is especially meaningful because it was custom-designed for Lifehouse. Developed by David Escobar, Director of Training & Quality Assurance, in collaboration with the Lifehouse DEI Workgroup, it reflects the real-world experiences and challenges of caregiving in the I/DD community. Our DEI Workgroup, which meets monthly, plays a vital role in advancing inclusion throughout Lifehouse. This dedicated team helps guide initiatives and ensures DEI remains woven into our daily practices and long-term strategy. Thank you to our community and donors for supporting this work. Together, we are making inclusion not just a value, but a reality we live, for every person we are privileged to support. Check out the full edition of our Spring Newsletter! August 11, 2025 LIfehouse Agency After a several-year break, our Annual Summer Picnic made a joyful return, and what a day it was! From the moment guests arrived at Stafford Lake Park, the air was filled with laughter, live music, and the aroma of Lombardi’s Gourmet BBQ. Friends, families, and the people we support came together to enjoy lively games, great food, and music from Zack and the Chromo-Tones. Our amazing volunteers helped create a warm, and welcoming atmosphere that truly reflected the spirit of Lifehouse. Please contact Kate O'Connor, Director of Programs and Operations at Lifehouse, to discuss your relative’s potential needs. What is the application process for new Lifehouse participants? Contact Kate O'Connor, Director of Programs and Operations, to discuss a potential participant’s needs. Kate can arrange facility visits for a first-hand look at our programs as well as provide information about other agencies and services that may be of interest. We accept both private pay and fees for services through the Regional Centers. If the potential client is not yet a client of the Regional Center, it is a good idea to start the process because it can take up to 120 days. Along with a completed application, the Regional Center requires attachments of copies of medical reports regarding the applicant’s disability or information from school records. Once approved, a Regional Center case manager will be assigned to the new client to help develop a personal plan and recommend services. The Regional Center does fund services approved by the interdisciplinary team. Lifehouse is happy to assist with the application process. What makes Lifehouse unique? Since 1954, we have been instrumental in providing services for people with developmental disabilities. During this time, we have initiated many new programs in response to expressed needs in the community. Lifehouse strives to ensure that the people we support are integrated within the community and can function as independently as possible. We’re proud that our core group of staff members has been with Lifehouse for many years, allowing them to develop strong long-term relationships with the people we serve. How does Lifehouse help its independent living program participants? We offer support services and training for adults with developmental disabilities so they develop the living and social skills needed for living in their own home or apartment. The people we support learn how to be mobile and social in the community, shop for necessities, prepare meals, manage their finances, and take care of their personal items, health needs and household surroundings. We work with each individual to develop a comprehensive plan that will help him or her reach their goal of increased independence. How does Lifehouse assist participants with physical impairments or more severe cognitive disabilities? We operate three Intermediate Care group homes that are designed to provide comprehensive support to individuals with severe physical and/or cognitive disabilities. Residents have the opportunity to live as independently as possible with outings in the community and continued training in self-help and communication skills. Staff members that work in these homes have regular contact with a house physician and nurse consultants. Other consultants that work with these residents include speech, occupational, physical, and behavioral therapists. We offer supported living services that can be tailored to individuals' needs, which includes staff to assist individuals living in their own apartment or home. Funding for supported living can be provided by the Regional Center, but the participant or the participant's family pays for the cost of housing. Almost all adult participants receive state supplemental income. How does Lifehouse assist its participants in community involvement? We help the people we support become active participants in their community by providing outings and skills programs to make them feel comfortable in their environments. Our staff and volunteers plan and assist in outings for participants to shop, eat, go to the movies, bowl, and engage in community activities of their choice. Living and social skills training is given in participants’ homes as well as in public areas such as banks, supermarkets, department stores, buses, and restaurants. Participants who live in our independent living skills training homes are either employed in the community or participate in job training and volunteer programs. What kinds of activities are provided for participants? The people we support are involved in many community activities including volunteering, participating in Special Olympics, swimming and exercise programs, dining, bowling, house parties, and visits into the community. We have worked closely with the Parks and Recreation Departments to promote community activities such as monthly dances and get-togethers. Some of our annual events include a picnic, awards banquet, and a holiday party. We also offer a travel program that takes our participants to exciting destinations such as Disneyland, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Reno, Las Vegas, New York, and cruises to Mexico. How does Lifehouse find appropriate housing for individuals ready to live on their own? Because of a lack of affordable housing in the Bay Area, Lifehouse is active in organizations that promote new affordable housing opportunities. Additionally, over the last 20 years, Lifehouse has developed its own housing, which clients can rent based on affordability. home Back To Top 2023 In-Kind Donors Annual Reports Home for Life Donation Donate Learn More CC A Full Life Intranet newsletter FAQs Our Team Our Services Careers Ways to Help Volunteer Resources History Financials Employee Portal CCPA Subscribe Sign up with your email address to receive news and updates. Our community gathered to stand up for the rights and futures of people with I/DD, and keep the important principles of the Lanterman Act intact. The message was clear: California must honor its promise to this community, and it starts with quality care, adequate funding, and the continued commitment of our elected leaders. Quality Care Starts with Investment Advocates emphasized the vital need for adequate funding to ensure a skilled and consistent workforce that can provide the support individuals with I/DD need to live independently and have the opportunity to lead full lives. When we invest in quality care, we’re not just meeting a legal obligation, we are upholding human dignity. Upholding California’s Promise The Lanterman Act guarantees access to essential services and supports for Californians with I/DD, but as funding uncertainty looms, so does the potential rollback of hard-won rights. One of the greatest shared sentiments of parents with a child with I/DD can be quoted by Lifehouse parent, Martin Weil, “Who will care when we are gone?” This is not just about budgets, it’s about people, families, and futures. Investing in Our Shared Future Supporting service providers doesn’t just benefit those directly receiving care, it strengthens the very fabric of our communities. Families can thrive. Individuals can work, live, and contribute more fully. A well-supported disability services system uplifts everyone. A Strong Showing of Support from Elected Officials We were honored by the presence of committed leaders, including: Congress Member Jared Huffman Assembly Member Damon Connolly Novato Mayor Tim O'Connor Novato Council Members Mark Milberg and Kevin Jacobs San Rafael Council Member Rachel Kertz Congressman Huffman offered a transparent and detailed update on the federal budget and the looming challenges around Medicaid (Medi-Cal in California) . He didn’t shy away from the tough news, highlighting that there are Republican holdouts ignoring pleas from constituents worried about the future of Medi-Cal. His advice? Keep speaking out. Share your stories. Encourage friends and family in those districts to contact their representatives. Assemblymember Connolly, alongside Huffman, showed genuine care and dedication to the I/DD community. Their presence—and their candor—was deeply appreciated. They reminded us that disability rights are not a partisan issue. This is about dignity, access, and equality. Values we all share. The Path Forward This meeting was more than a discussion—it was a call to action. If we want California to fulfill its promises, we must: Contact our representatives and make our voices heard. Share real-life stories of how funding and services impact daily lives Encourage others in our networks to get involved Demand transparency and accountability as budget decisions unfold Together, We Make the Difference Every voice counts. Every story matters. With our collective strength and the support of leaders who truly care, we can ensure California delivers on its promise to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Because your decision matters—and so does theirs.   April 21, 2025 LIfehouse Agency LIfehouse Agency A Night to Remember: Great Chefs & Wineries 2025 Happy Holidays Back To Top 2023 In-Kind Donors Annual Reports Home for Life Donation Donate Learn More CC A Full Life Intranet newsletter FAQs Our Team Our Services Careers Ways to Help Volunteer Resources History Financials Employee Portal CCPA Subscribe Sign up with your email address to receive news and updates.
