This approach organizes subjects into six integrated categories that support the development of willpower, clarity, emotional maturity, academic strength, and personal purpose. Students learn to connect what they study with real life, gaining strong academic skills and inner tools for meeting challenges with insight.   Through this meaningful, whole-student framework, they discover how their studies relate to who they are becoming. Self-Expression & Communication Students learn to express ideas with sincerity and clarity. By pairing self-expression with communication, they discover how to share something meaningful rather than perform for approval. Mathematics strengthens clear thinking; writing, grammar, and logic help them translate inspiration into coherent expression; and the creative arts teach them to draw from authentic inspiration. Through this integrated approach, students develop the ability to communicate truthfully, thoughtfully, and with purpose. (Mathematics, English, Logic, Rhetoric, Theater Arts, Music, Creative Writing) Personal Development Students strengthen body, mind, and inner awareness through a balance of physical activity, mental focus, and reflective practices. They learn techniques that build concentration and clarity, develop healthy habits through exercise and outdoor challenges, and are introduced to simple tools for calmness and self-understanding . This class supports steady growth in confidence, resilience, and inner maturity. (PE, Sports Science, Health, Yoga, Meditation, Concentration, Memory Training) Our Earth - Our Universe Through the sciences, students explore the natural world in a way that awakens curiosity, awe, and connection. Life sciences introduce them to the complexity and wonder of living systems, while physics and other physical sciences help them understand the laws that shape our reality. Our human-body–based biology program and applied physiology course offer a hands-on understanding of structure, movement, and health. Through experiments, projects, and real-world application, science becomes engaging and alive, inviting students to appreciate the beauty and order of the universe. (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geology, Anatomy and Physiology) Cooperation Students learn how people live and work together in families, communities, nations, and the wider world. Through U.S. History and Government , they explore the ideals that shape a society and what it means to participate in a shared national story. World languages and cultures help them understand the values, perspectives, and human motivations behind another way of life. Economics introduces them to the practical realities that guide collective decision-making. These studies help students see cooperation as both a practical skill and an act of service, preparing them to contribute thoughtfully and responsibly in any setting. (U.S. History, Government, Economics, Personal Finance, Spanish Language & Culture) Understanding People Students study history, psychology, and human behavior in a way that begins with self-understanding. By seeing themselves in the stories of people across time, they gain insight into their own motives and choices. From there, they learn to recognize the universal drives that shape all human experience. This growing awareness fosters clearer judgment, empathy, and a deeper sense of connection with others. (World History, Psychology, Sociology) Wholeness Wholeness brings all branches of learning together into a meaningful whole. Through literature, music, art, philosophy, and the world’s spiritual traditions, students explore ideas and stories that illuminate the human experience. Great works help them see patterns of harmony and purpose, recognize reflections of their own lives, and understand the shared search for happiness that unites all people. This study deepens their appreciation of beauty and insight, helping them find coherence in their learning and clarity in their own journey. (Literature, Philosophy, Religion, Music, Art) Academic Programs Students learn best when they receive thoughtful guidance and room to grow. Our Upper School program supports students in matching their readiness with academic challenge, while giving them clear structure and consistent mentorship. Teachers help students build strong academic habits and take increasing responsibility for their learning. With meaningful challenge and growing independence, students gain confidence and develop the clarity and self-direction they need to thrive. Honors & Advanced Studies Students who show readiness and enthusiasm for deeper study may pursue Honors-level work or independent projects with faculty guidance. These opportunities encourage stronger focus, higher-level thinking, and a sense of ownership in their learning. Upperclassmen may also assist teachers as TAs, gaining leadership experience and deeper mastery in a subject they love. Dual Enrollment Eligible students may enroll in community college courses to explore advanced topics or accelerate their academic path. Dual enrollment gives students experience with college-level expectations while earning credits that may apply toward both high school and future college requirements. Participation is guided to ensure readiness and balance. College & Career Readiness Our college and career guidance follows an inside-out approach that helps students understand their strengths, interests, and goals before choosing next steps. Through workshops, mentorship, and a gradual four-year progression, students learn how to present themselves with clarity and confidence. Support includes course planning, resume building, essay development, and exploration of meaningful post-graduation pathways. ( Learn More About our College & Career Counseling Program ) Study Hall & Academic Support After-school study hall provides a quiet, structured space for students to complete assignments, meet with teachers, and receive academic help as needed. These practices help students of all ages develop inner calm, emotional balance, and self-awareness—skills that support both academic learning and lifelong well-being. Our approach is nonsectarian and age-appropriate, grounded in universal principles of awareness, movement, and stillness. When children learn to quiet their bodies and minds through meditation, they awaken the calmness and clarity that allow their natural love of learning to shine. Nitai Deranja Co-Founder of EFL Lower School Yoga and meditation are introduced through playful, engaging experiences that build inner strength and awareness in age-appropriate ways. Every class from Kindergarten through 8th grade begins with Circle Time, which includes activities to energize, focus, and calm, such as: Energizing : such as a walk in the neighborhood, yoga postures, energization exercises, or stretching Focusing: glitter jars, singing uplifting music, or watching the breath Calming: silent bodies, relaxation pose, instrumental music or nature sounds, or meditation My son has never been especially interested in yoga or meditation, but my sense is that’s a big part of what helps him and everyone in his environment be so calm, focused, and regulated. They go on walks, they do brief meditations, they do a variety of yoga exercises—and it works. He comes home calm, regulated, and happy to share about his day because he wasn’t stressed; he was engaged. Jay Shultz-Heik, Living Wisdom Parent Child Psychologist at Stanford University Upper School At the high school level, yoga and meditation support students’ deeper journey toward self-mastery, calm focus, and balanced awareness. Practices are introduced gradually and integrated across student life—in formal classes as well as in everyday moments. Students: Practice energization exercises to awaken focus and direct energy Explore yoga postures, breathing techniques, music for upliftment, and meditation Use short centering practices during transitions and before tests Build toward leading a daily sadhana (personal practice) Connect experiences to Personal Development, a core class designed to strengthen body, mind, will, and spirit A Lifelong Foundation Yoga and meditation help students establish a reliable inner center. By learning to quiet the mind, young people build a foundation of emotional stability that supports both their academic journey and their personal happiness. Find Your Self  Here. How a Student’s Quality Is Chosen Teachers observe each student closely over the year and look for the quality that has become most alive in them. The chosen quality reflects genuine growth. It gives the student language for something true about themselves and helps anchor their speech in the truth of who they are becoming. Listen to Students Reflect on Their Qualities Aliza, 3rd grade Quality of Joy Aryan 4th grade Quality of Adventurousness Diya 5th grade Quality of Willpower The Ceremony Experience Students stand before their community and speak about their own growth. In this warm and celebratory setting, each child is seen for their unique nature and sincere effort, creating a memory that lasts. How Qualities Shape a Life A named quality stays with a student long after the ceremony. It becomes a reference point they can return to when facing new challenges, strengthening their confidence and sense of self. We’ve watched our children grow into young people who understand themselves, think critically, work with compassion, and meet real-world challenges with confidence. These are the qualities we’ve seen nurtured year after year. While tuition covers the daily essentials, the Annual Giving Campaign (AGC) allows our educational vision to truly flourish. Did you know? 15% of our total budget is fueled by community fundraising. Your support provides the resources that sustain the spirit of our school—helping us create an environment where students learn to navigate life with a deep sense of their own unique gifts.   We invite you to join us in this year-long effort to keep our community strong and vibrant. Support Living Wisdom What you’re offering your students goes far beyond vocabulary, reading strategies, or literary analysis. You’re giving them a framework for life. You’re teaching them how to think, how to question, how to understand themselves, and how to navigate the complexities of emotion and human experience. Thank you for investing not just in their intellect, but in their character and their inner lives. Parul Agrawal Living Wisdom Parent What Annual Giving Makes Possible The Annual Giving Campaign The AGC sustains the daily life of our school, supporting our faculty and the close mentoring that defines our classrooms. Most importantly, it funds our scholarship program , allowing us to remain an inclusive community for families who are deeply aligned with our values, regardless of their financial circumstances. These funds ensure that the heart of our curriculum—including Theater Magic and our small class sizes—remains vibrant and accessible. Student-Led Fundraising We encourage our students to look beyond themselves. Through student-led initiatives, our community supports experiences that expand a student's perspective and sense of responsibility. These include the Global Connections Academy , international service trips , and athletic competition travel . By participating in these efforts, students learn to translate their inner development into outward service and leadership. Campus and Program Development This area of giving allows donors to support specific physical and academic growth. Contributions are currently focused on science lab enhancements , arts and maker spaces , and athletic facility development . These improvements, along with future site planning , ensure that our environment evolves to meet the needs of our students as they move through our K-12 program. A Unified Future Our vision for Living Wisdom is a unified campus that brings our entire K-12 community together. This environment will allow our students to grow and thrive in one location, strengthening the bonds across all age groups. We invite your participation in helping us realize this expansive future for our school. Giving Levels Your participation at any level is a meaningful contribution to our community. Raju Parikh, Living Wisdom Parent Director of Early Learning Programs, Stanford University Curricular Overview Playmakers (TK-K) Understanding People Children develop empathy, insight, and the ability to live harmoniously with others. Children learn to recognize and name their feelings, understand what’s happening inside them, and use calming practices when emotions feel big. Through stories, friendship skills, and community routines, they begin to work with their energy in positive, caring ways. Language Arts Clear communication strengthens a child’s ability to understand and express their inner world with confidence and truth. Reading opens the mind to new ideas, strengthens concentration, and nurtures a lifelong love of learning. Early literacy grows through phonics, letter formation, beginning decoding, and joyful read-alouds. One-on-one reading, home reading books, and daily exposure to print help children build confidence as emerging readers. Science & Nature Exploring the natural world awakens wonder, curiosity, and a deeper awareness of life’s unity. Students explore the natural world through gardening, observation, and simple experiments. They learn how plants grow, what soil is made of, and how living things change over time, building curiosity and a sense of connection with nature. Kinder Café Children help prepare and taste foods connected to the garden, learning about seasonal eating, balanced flavors, and how whole foods nourish the body. They use math through measurements, science through cooking, and vocabulary through the ingredients. Creating their own recipe book helps them take pride in their discoveries. Art Children express themselves with freedom, imagination, and joyful creativity. Art invites children to express themselves freely while developing fine and gross motor skills. They explore paint, nature materials, and creative “Beautiful Oops” projects that teach them to see mistakes as opportunities. Math The child trains their mind toward clarity, order, and steady, focused thinking. Math concepts are introduced through hands-on materials, movement, and real-world tasks. Children develop early number sense, sort and identify shapes, and begin simple addition and subtraction in concrete, playful ways. PE / Movement Builds willpower, coordination, confidence, and a healthy, energetic sense of self. Movement time helps children develop coordination, spatial awareness, and teamwork. Games emphasize cooperation, healthy competition, and cheering for one another.   Wholeness Cultivates calmness, inner awareness, and the ability to act from a centered place within. Children begin each day with yoga, singing, breathing, and quiet moments that help them feel centered and ready to learn. Practices of gratitude and calm reflection nurture inner peace from the very beginning. Children learn through joyful exploration, movement, sensory experiences, and hands-on activities. Early academic foundations grow naturally from discovery and imaginative play. Imagineers (Grades 1-2) Understanding People Children develop empathy, insight, and the ability to live harmoniously with others. Students explore friendship skills, community roles, and the difference between rules and agreements. Culture units, maps, and stories help them practice empathy, cooperation, and peaceful problem-solving. Language Arts Clear communication strengthens a child’s ability to understand and express their inner world with confidence and truth. True education guides the student inward, not only forward.   How we do it: Through meditation, movement, and thoughtful guidance, students learn to grow in self-awareness, strength, and clarity—from the inside out. Energy Is the Key to Success Students learn best when their energy is harmonious and uplifted. When the heart is calm and the mind clear, understanding flows naturally. How we do it: We use music, movement, and play to help students work with their energy, awaken enthusiasm, and return to their center. Teaching to the Individual, Not the Average Each child unfolds in their own time and way. We honor that journey by seeing clearly, listening deeply , and guiding with patience and trust. How we do it: Through mentorship, small groups, and attunement, we tailor the path to fit the child—not the other way around. Learning That Feeds the Soul Academic excellence has its place, but the goal of learning is far greater. When students learn with curiosity and joy , they carry that spark into all areas of life.     How we do it: We bring awareness, relevance, and creativity into every subject, so that learning uplifts and transforms. Nurturing What Endures In a world of change, what matters most is who we become. Qualities like empathy, inner calm, and resilience are not extra—they are essential. Students become aware through experience and reflection.    How we do it: Introspection, service, and shared projects make compassion and inner strength practical and real in daily life. Awakening Inner Values Through Experience Virtue is not taught by words alone. It is awakened through experience and reinforced by reflection. Students discover for themselves the peace and joy that come from living in harmony with truth.   How we do it: Practice of meditation, quiet time, and conversation allows values like courage, kindness, and honesty to take root and grow. Over the past 32 years, students have portrayed the lives of St. Francis, Kuan Yin, Harriet Tubman, the Buddha, Martin Luther King Jr., Jesus, Krishna, Yogananda, Moses, Hafiz, Joan of Arc, George Washington Carver, Luther Burbank, and others. A Collaborative Schoolwide Project Theater Magic is an all-lower school endeavor. Every class, from TK through 8th, participates in bringing the production to life:   Younger children contribute through dance, movement, and song. Older students take on speaking roles and help shape the transitions between scenes. Students learn about the time period, setting, and the approach to life of the figure they are portraying.   Rehearsals take place in small scene groups, with mixed ages working together. This creates a simple, natural way for students to learn from one another and participate at a level appropriate to their age and readiness.   The process is steady and structured, with attention given to clarity, presence, timing, and the practical skills of stagecraft. Why We Choose These Stories The individuals we choose to portray each lived with a sense of higher purpose. Their lives show what it looks like when someone is guided by conscience, courage, devotion, and service to others.   This makes the play a meaningful extension of the curriculum, offering students a chance to study the cultural, historical, and spiritual context of a life that has influenced the world.   The goal is not simply to dramatize events but to enter the worldview that shaped them — the values, inner motivations, and choices that defined the person being studied. What stood out about the play was how seriously the children took their roles. They understood they were contributing to something the whole school was creating together. For an entire term, students step into the life of an extraordinary figure, bringing history, art, and self-expression together on stage. This year’s production tells the story of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., and the deeper strength that guided the Civil Rights Movement. These moments capture what happens when students don’t just study history—they live it. Middle School Adventure Week Adventure Week brings middle school students together through outdoor challenge, shared work, and time in nature. Training together throughout the week, every athlete earned gold at their first team competition this year, with Coach Keshava taking bronze. At Boss Barbell Club, students train alongside elite athletes, pushing their limits in a serious environment. Experienced lifters now mentor newer teammates, strengthening both the team and their own understanding of the sport. Their physical strength is impressive. More importantly, they are developing discipline, perseverance, and the ability to do hard things well—qualities that carry into every part of life. Upper School Yosemite Trek This Yosemite expedition asked a great deal of our upper school students. Hiking more than twenty miles in a single day, they moved together through challenge, fatigue, and moments of quiet determination. The experience offered more than physical accomplishment. It gave students a lived understanding of perseverance, teamwork, and their own capacity to meet demanding goals. Upper School Fall Family Yoga Fest At the Fall Family Yoga Fest at Ananda Village, upper school students supported the event from start to finish, assisting with setup, music, activities, and cleanup. Their shared effort helped create a joyful, welcoming gathering and gave students practical experience in service, teamwork, and shared responsibility. Find Your Self  Here. In practice, it supports students in developing focus, resilience, and a deeper understanding of themselves and others.   This vision found early expression through the life and work of Paramhansa Yogananda, whose pioneering school in India helped lay the foundation for what would later become Living Wisdom School. Ranchi School for Boys - 1917 Ranchi, India The First "How to Live" School 1917 Yogananda opens a school for boys in Ranchi, India, planting the seeds of an educational revolution—one that nurtures self-understanding and character alongside academic learning. Paramhansa Yogananda Brought ancient, universal wisdom into modern education. Paramhansa Yogananda Brought ancient, universal wisdom into modern education. Living Wisdom School is rooted in a simple but powerful idea: a child's awareness, energy, and inner state shape how they learn.  True learning begins not with information alone, but with the cultivation of self-understanding. This approach draws upon universal principles of inner growth that belong to all of humanity. In practice, it supports students in developing focus, resilience, and a deeper understanding of themselves and others.    This vision found early expression through the life and work of Paramhansa Yogananda, whose pioneering school in India helped lay the foundation for what would later become Living Wisdom School. A Century of Innovative Learning Inspired by the pioneering work in Ranchi, Swami Kriyananda gave these universal ideals a contemporary, practical form through the Education for Life approach. This system of learning remains centered on the development of awareness, transforming Yogananda’s "How-to-Live" principles into a global educational framework. Education is not merely a preparation for a career; it is a preparation for life itself. Living Wisdom Schools are the living expression of this educational legacy—places where education is a path of self-discovery, inner strength, and joyful service. Over generations, our community has expanded across continents, yet the heart remains the same: helping each child grow in wisdom, compassion, and courage, one conscious choice at a time. Swami Kriyananda, Founder of the  Education for Life approach. A Global Foundation This commitment to conscious living is shared with a larger, worldwide community known as Ananda, founded by Swami Kriyananda. Ananda was created to bring universal principles into daily life through service, community, and purposeful living—with education serving as one of its central pillars. While this heritage informs the school’s core values, Living Wisdom School is an independent, nonsectarian institution. Its influence is seen through our practical, consciousness-centered approach to learning that honors the individual path of every student and family, resulting in teaching methods that are practical, grounded, and time-tested. True education can never be crammed and pumped from without; rather it must aid in bringing spontaneously to the surface the infinite hoards of wisdom within. Paramhansa Yogananda Founder of the First "How to Live" School 1972 The first Living Wisdom School is founded at Ananda Village in Northern California, establishing the Education for Life approach. 1992 Living Wisdom School of Palo Alto is founded, bringing Education for Life to the heart of Silicon Valley. 2000s Education for Life-inspired schools begin expanding internationally, with programs established in Italy, India, and Slovenia over the following years. 2017 Living Wisdom High School opens in Palo Alto to serve teenagers with a consciousness-centered approach to academic and personal growth. What is Education for Life? Developed by Swami Kriyananda, Education for Life is the philosophy behind Living Wisdom School. It offers a practical framework for educating the whole child, supporting inner growth alongside strong academic learning. Learn more about Education for Life Find Your Self  Here.
