I know this firsthand. After spending 23 years as a corporate litigator, it took a long time — and a lot of soul-searching — to realize that my true passion was helping people improve their health and well-being. I also live with chronic pain, which has taught me patience, adaptability, and how to create progress even when life feels physically or emotionally challenging. These experiences shaped the way I coach today. They gave me perspective, compassion, and a deep understanding of what it feels like to be capable and successful on the outside while feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure of your next step on the inside. In early August 2020, I reached my goal weight; I lost 40 pounds! In reviewing my lab work with me this year, my doctor was more than pleased. My tests indicated I was no longer pre-diabetic! But that wasn’t all; after years of elevated cholesterol and BMI, my numbers were normal. My blood pressure followed suit; it was ideal. I’ll never be able to thank Lorie enough for the changes she’s helped me to make in my life. Relaxing. For most of my life, I’ve been far more comfortable being productive than being still. If there was time, I filled it. If there was something to do, I did it. And if there wasn’t… I usually found something anyway. It felt normal. Even responsible. But over time, I’ve started to notice something—both in myself and in the women I work with. Constantly being “on” comes with a cost. And not just mentally. Metabolically. Why This Matters More Than You Think When most people think about metabolic health, they focus on: Nutrition Exercise Discipline Eat better. Move more. Stay consistent. All important. But metabolism is influenced by much more than that. It’s shaped by: Sleep Stress Nervous system balance Recovery Daily habits And one of the most overlooked factors? The ability to actually relax. The Pattern I See All the Time Many of the women I work with are highly capable. They’re used to handling a lot. They push through fatigue. They stay productive even when they’re tired. And their days often look like this: There’s always something to do There’s rarely a true break Even downtime feels slightly “on” Slowing down feels uncomfortable Over time, they begin to notice: Lower energy Poorer sleep quality Increased cravings, especially in the evening More difficulty managing weight A general sense that everything feels harder So the conclusion becomes: “I need to be more disciplined.” But most of the time… that’s not the issue. What’s Actually Happening From a metabolic perspective, constant busyness keeps your body in a low-level stress state. Not extreme stress. Just… constant. Does that have anything to do with being overweight? There’s a growing body of research that shows a chemical link between inadequate sleep and weight gain. Many women describe the same frustrating pattern: Low energy during the day Afternoon crashes Feeling drained after dinner Then racing thoughts and restlessness at night A lot of people assume this is simply part of aging, stress, menopause, or “being bad at sleeping.” But often, there is more going on beneath the surface. Your Nervous System and Metabolism Are Connected Most people think metabolism is only about weight, calories, or exercise. But metabolism is also deeply connected to: stress sleep hormones blood sugar balance nervous system regulation recovery When the body spends years running in “go mode,” it can begin acting like it is always switched on. Work stress, caregiving, poor sleep, emotional overload, inconsistent meals, constant stimulation, and multitasking all place stress on the nervous system. Over time, women may begin experiencing: feeling exhausted but unable to relax waking up during the night sugar cravings in the evening brain fog low motivation difficulty calming the mind before sleep This is one reason stress and metabolic health are so closely connected. Why Pushing Harder Often Makes It Worse Many women respond to exhaustion by pushing harder: more caffeine skipping meals overworking overexercising constantly multitasking But a stressed body usually does not respond well to more stress. I often see women spending the entire day overriding what their body is asking for, then expecting it to instantly relax at bedtime. Unfortunately, a nervous system that has been overstimulated all day does not simply “shut off” when the lights go out. Recovery Is Part of Health One of the biggest mindset shifts for many women is realizing that rest is not laziness. Recovery is part of overall wellness. Simple habits that support the nervous system and metabolic health may include: eating more consistently improving blood sugar balance reducing stimulation before bed taking walks without multitasking creating real downtime prioritizing sleep and recovery slowing down mentally and physically These habits may sound simple, but they can have a powerful effect on how the body feels. Your Body Is Not Broken If you feel “tired but wired,” it does not necessarily mean something is wrong with you. Often, it means your body has adapted to years of stress, overstimulation, poor recovery, and constant output. That is physiology, not failure. And for many women, improving energy, sleep, and overall wellness starts with learning how to support the body instead of constantly fighting against it. My Life: Dodging Curve Balls, Jumping Hurdles, and Getting Surprised July 29, 2024 What lessons has life taught you? I’ve lived 68 years and have some wisdom to share with you. So far it’s been an interesting and somewhat unusual journey. While it got off on a bit of a rocky start, I put that behind me and got out there and made a surprisingly good life for myself. I’ve had two totally unrelated careers so far: law and wellness coaching. How does a corporate litigator morph into a wellness coach? I’ll tell you. And how does a person like me, devoted to physical fitness and taking care of her body, end up with so many extended episodes of pain? I have no answer for that one, but I feel entitled to indulge in some whining about the torture of enduring them. I’m on marriage #2 so I obviously failed big time on my first try despite putting it off until I was 36 years old. But I had the good sense to bail after seven miserable years and to take the lessons to heart. I’m not destined to be a two-time loser. I found that choosing the right partner makes all the difference. I also reminisce about a few other somewhat random topics like never having enough time to do all the things I want to do and getting old in what feels like an incredibly short time. I hope this is a fun read. I’m sure you will relate to some of my musings.
