A learning difference diagnosed in 9th grade brought us to Lydian and since then he’s thrived there – able to realize his own academic potential. ... Because of that academic support and intangible emotional support over the past four years he was recently admitted into an Ivy league university. Lydian Academy and specifically principal and now organizational leader, Jonathan Frecceri, have been life-changing for my child and our family. … If your child needs a more tailored educational experience, there’s no better place than Lydian. We are forever grateful to everyone at Lydian.” Parent/Guardian, greatschools.org “My daughter graduated on Saturday after three very happy years at Lydian Academy. She is one of those "twice-exceptional" kids with some areas where she is very gifted and some areas where things don't come as easily. What I loved was they were able to push her just far enough into her challenge zone to optimize learning in either case. She loves History and Political Science and they paired her with a Yale PhD who also adjuncts college level courses. ... And now she's off to college to be a History major herself at her first choice university. But, for subjects like Math and Spanish which come less easily, she was able to take the time needed to feel progress and a sense of mastery rather than just overwhelm as she did at prior schools. It is both an efficient and an effective way to learn. Also she had the absolute sweetest friend group. Lydian was a great experience for our family.” Ann D., yelp.com “ Our son has learning and brain based differences, and he thrived at this school… The teachers were extremely kind and respectful, and they clearly had his best interests at heart… He was able to get through the material much faster than at public school; he did 2.5 years of classes in 1.5 years… We have nothing but enormous respect and eternal gratitude to Jonathan, Perla, and the staff for all they did for our son. Highly highly highly recommend this school. ” Friend, greatschools.org “Despite 10+ years of private tutoring, a private school for kids with learning disabilities, and many special classes, reading and writing was still a struggle for him when he entered Lydian this Fall. He is now taking 11th grade English and we can't believe what he's producing after just 3 months. His reflection on what he's learned so far was a perfect example — he was able to describe where he is in the process, what he's learned, and what he's still working on. In depth and detail, organized and structured, and even with a literary reference to a short story he was just working on. ... What's best about it, of course, is that he's actually enjoying it. It's probably the first time in his life he's actually felt really confident about his academic abilities. ... Lydian, we are indebted to you.” A P., yelp.org Lydian’s 1:1 approach helps gifted and 2e students stop struggling and start thriving! As students strengthen their foundation across subject areas, Lydian teachers identify areas of growth and achievement, adjusting instruction to provide the personalized support each student needs. why choose lydian academy Mastery Learning Explained What is Mastery Learning? Mastery Learning is an educational approach based on the idea of mastering individual educational concepts before moving on to subsequent lessons. It calls for learning timelines to be set by students’ needs rather than a predetermined timeline. Who is Mastery Learning for? Mastery Learning is an effective learning strategy for all students as it focuses on creating strong educational foundations and eliminating learning gaps. It can be especially beneficial for gifted and 2e learners as it allows students to move through the curriculum at their own pace, alleviating boredom, while also providing needed support. Why does Lydian use Mastery Learning? Lydian Academy believes in helping all students succeed and thrive in their educational goals. The flexible pacing championed by Mastery Learning allows students to learn at their own pace and fosters a deep understanding and increased retention of educational concepts. How does Mastery Learning work? Mastery Learning starts by meeting students where they are through baseline assessments and then using that feedback to develop personalized learning plans. It involves clear learning objectives, frequent checks for understanding, corrective feedback as needed, and enrichment opportunities. Mastery Learning Explained More Attention Dedicated instructors will frequently assess student understanding, helping them succeed in all subject areas and eliminating learning gaps. Time Saving Students can learn at their own pace with accelerated and college-level courses offered for flexible full- or part-time schedules. Your Choice Students can dive deeper into subjects they’re passionate about and enhance their transcripts with AP, honors and college-level classes. Future Success Students will deepen their knowledge of educational concepts and increase retention, giving them a strong foundation for post-secondary success. Why Mastery Learning Works Mastery Learning places students at the center of their education, encouraging them to become active learners rather than passive recipients of knowledge. Students take ownership of their education in ways that redefine learning as interactive and engaging. The Mastery Learning model helps better prepare students for post-secondary life, creating a strong educational foundation that students can build on for the rest of their lives. contact us to learn more Empowering Students through Mastery Learning Mastery Learning encourages students to have a growth mindset by helping them internalize the idea that if they are struggling with something, it’s just because they don’t know it… yet. By focusing on self-pacing and providing ample time for reteaching and/or enrichment, students are taught to embrace the learning phase and take ownership of their education. Mastery Learning empowers students by focusing on: Effort and improvement: Success isn’t about what you already know; it’s about learning and growth Progress through mastery: Understanding is more important than speed Persistence and practice: Skills can be improved and developed through hard work See if Lydian is right for your student We offer a unique year-round one-on-one learning experience, personalized to you and your schedule. It is very common for some students to find it difficult to focus their attention in distracting environments. Lydian Academy’s individualized, one-to-one learning environment helps students with attention challenges to focus on and fully engage with a single instructor who can tailor their approach to the way their students learn best. Our private middle and high school programs were developed specifically to help students who are not thriving in other educational settings. Many Students Face Attention Challenges Many middle and high school students are identified as facing greater than average attention challenges. They might be classified as ADD or ADHD, which are terms that describe a group of traits that often occur together. Attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affect at least 9.4% of children in the United States. As many as 3.3 million children between the ages of 12 and 17 may have been diagnosed with ADHD. If your child is facing attention challenges, they are certainly not alone in this, and may benefit from a one-on-one learning environment. In general, a student with attention challenges may: Seem inattentive in class and have difficulty staying on task Find it difficult to sit still for long periods of time without feeling restless and fidgety Seem to make impulsive decisions based on short-term rewards Of course, all of us face these challenges to some degree, and in some situations. Educators and mental health professionals will typically categorize a child as having an attention disorder when these behaviors occur more often than average, seem more severe, or interfere in a child’s ability to perform well in school and social environments. More important than statistics and labels is the way these challenges can change how a student feels about learning. Young people who struggle in a large classroom environment may wind up feeling frustrated and disconnected, and begin to doubt their own abilities. Providing a personalized learning environment will help empower these students to achieve academic and personal success. One-to-One Classes Provide Focused Attention One of the best ways to deal with challenges of attention is to engage with the student in a focused manner. One-to-one instruction provides the ideal environment for these unique learners to fully engage with the subject in a more active and creative manner. Some of the possibilities when the coursework is tailored to the unique needs and interests of the student include: Segmenting lessons and assignments into shorter, more focused work sessions Scheduling flexibility to take advantage of each students optimal learning times Audio, visual, and tactile learning tools that fully engage the student’s senses Tracking clear expectations, progress, and successful completion of projects Testing in shorter intervals, on more specific material, in more engaging formats The Benefits of One-on-One Education at Lydian Academy Full-time and part-time students at Lydian Academy all take advantage of individualized coursework and one-student, one-teacher classrooms. Sparking a student’s interest and encouraging full engagement in the educational experience is a goal for each and every learner at Lydian. Compassionate and experienced instructors who can focus on each student as a unique individual may be the best way to reconnect with learning. Lydian Academy has a rolling enrollment system that allows students to start the school year whenever they wish. Lydian students develop a strong sense of purpose, placing them on a path to becoming part of a responsible global citizenry. At Lydian, whether it’s challenging coursework or rediscovering the value of lifelong learning, students find their academic wings at Lydian. Jonathan Frecceri Head of School Jonathan joined Lydian Academy as the Palo Alto Campus Principal in 2017, where he integrated his experience as a PPS credentialed school counselor, special educational consultant, and licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in optimizing educational and wellness programming for unique student learners. His background prior to Lydian consisted of working with neurodiverse students with IEP's and twice-exceptional learning profiles who required a combination of mental health and academic supports to access their learning, and this experience proved incredibly useful when it came to listening to each Lydian student's specific needs and learning objectives, and creating personalized education programs to support those endeavors. Following the Lydian Founder’s retirement, Jonathan stepped into the Executive Director role for the organization, and helped to staff/recruit Leadership team members for the opening of a 2nd campus location in Burlingame, CA in 2021. As the current Head of School, Jonathan oversees all aspects of admissions and outreach, academic advising, post-secondary / transition planning, and mental health consultation for both the Palo Alto and Burlingame campus locations. Prior to Lydian, Jonathan was an Adjunct Faculty member in the graduate school of education at the University of San Francisco, the Mental Health and Wellness Coordinator at Palo Alto High School, and a psychotherapist in private practice. Jonathan helped develop the K-12 Toolkit for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, which was released and distributed to school superintendents in California in May 2017 in support of AB2246. Since 2010, he has worked at the intersection of mental health and education, including consulting work with the HEARD alliance, Stanford University, Project Safety Net, and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). Some of Jonathan’s greatest accomplishments include spearheading a comprehensive Wellness Initiative that included the opening of Palo Alto High School’s first teen Wellness Center, and speaking engagements with PAUSD’s Wellness and Support Services leadership team at two national conferences. Jonathan graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Notre Dame with a B.A. in Psychology and English, and holds a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of San Francisco. He is a proud father of 5 children and two furry felines, a Harry Potter and Game of Thrones fanatic, and loves spending his free time in movie theatres and outdoors in Sonoma / Monterey counties. Perla Frecceri Director of Student Services Perla has lived in the Bay Area for 13 years, and is originally from Southern California. She has been with Lydian Academy since 2011, where she started out teaching English, History, and Spanish for several years before moving into a Dean position, Assistant Principal, and eventually the Campus Director for the Palo Alto campus. She received her B.A. in English with an emphasis in Early Modern Literature and minors in Spanish and Education with an emphasis in Applied Psychology from UC Santa Barbara. Perla holds a single subject credential in English, and has experience working in ABA therapy and creating student accommodation plans for neurodiverse students. In addition to being a fluent Spanish speaker, Perla is passionate about ASL, and spent several years working with the Deaf community and teaching sign language to deaf toddlers and their families. When she is not on campus, she enjoys spending time with her children baking cupcakes and making clay mini food, going to music concerts and San Jose Broadway shows with her husband, or quietly coloring and doing diamond art with her two cats, Reese and Ryn, curled up at her side. Elisabeth George, Ph.D Director of Instruction and Support Services Elisabeth joined Lydian Academy as an English and History teacher in 2018, and has served in a leadership capacity since 2020 as the Dean of Curriculum and Guidance Services and WASC Coordinator. In 2024, Elisabeth moved into her current role as the Director of Instruction and Support Services for the organization. With more than twelve years of experience as an educator, Dr. George enjoys working with students, families, faculty, and colleagues in order to make education accessible, productive, and engaging. Having previously taught in university, high school, and middle school settings, she started as a teacher in the Humanities and Social Studies departments at Lydian. Dr. George holds an undergraduate degree from New Mexico State University, where she majored in Spanish and minored in Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management. She earned a Master of Arts from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Binghamton in Cultural Anthropology, with a certificate in Feminist Studies, and received a Ph.D. in History from SUNY Buffalo, specializing in gender and sexuality. In her spare time, Dr. George enthusiastically embraces the outdoors and delves deep into sustainable farming practices while spending time with her wife, four cats, and thirty-three chickens. Erika Yeates Dean of Academic Affairs - Palo Alto Erika grew up in Houston, Texas (go 'Stros!) and majored in Mathematics with a focus on differential geometry, alongside teaching STEM in secondary education. She spent five years teaching at a public high school, where she led the Geometry and AP Calculus AB teams and mentored student teachers. After moving to California, Erika joined Lydian Academy, where she taught mathematics, led the Essentials for Success (EFS) team, and served as the Student Activities Coordinator before becoming the Dean of Academic Affairs. She feels fortunate to work with an incredible team and continue learning from them every day. Every student at Lydian has a customized, individual educational program, with the core academic instruction provided in a 1:1 format between the students and their teachers. There is nothing cookie-cutter or boiler plate about our school. We personalize the experience to each individual student based on their needs, goals, and unique learning profiles. Who is the “typical” Lydian student? Families enroll for so many different reasons that we don’t have a typical student. It’s rare to find a school that is able to provide a quality education to advanced students, neuro-diverse learners with diagnosed learning differences or health challenges, gifted and twice-exceptional students, or competitive athletes and performers in need of flexible scheduling who don’t have to put their dreams on hold in pursuit of a college preparatory education. At Lydian, students of all stripes become fast friends in an intimate learning environment characterized by relentless positivity, acceptance, and support. How has Lydian uniquely positioned itself to support students in the wake of the pandemic? As parents and educators riding the tailwinds of this pandemic learning phenomenon, we have all been invited to re-appraise and re-define traditional pathways in education for our kids. Over the past two years, Lydian has expanded its footprint from 100% brick and mortar services at our Menlo Park legacy campus, to now providing both in-person and online UC-approved college-prep, Honors, and AP courses at two campus locations in Menlo Park and Burlingame, CA. Students progress through courses at their individual pace, and are able to mix and match in person and remote learning opportunities as circumstances warrant. What is the most rewarding part of your job? Being able to shape “authentic” success for every unique individual that walks through our doors. The Silicon Valley is a hub of creativity and innovation, and there are many traditional definitions of success imposed on students and families living here. Navigating the educational system can be daunting, especially when pressured to assimilate to prescribed pathways of achievement. At Lydian Academy, there is no “right” pathway or “wrong” pathway to success – there is simply “your pathway,” and it’s transformative to see these young people who often come to us defeated and feeling that college might be off the table experience authentic success and achieve their dreams. We offer a unique year-round one-on-one learning experience, personalized to you and your schedule. At Lydian, we recognize that every person has unique strengths and challenges that make them an essential part of our educational community. What types of students benefit most from a flexible one-on-one approach? Athletes and Performing Artists Young people who are exploring their talents in sports or performance arts need flexible schedules that can work around their practices, rehearsals, competitions, and performances. Rather than being penalized by rigid schedules and attendance requirements, Lydian students can attend classes that meet their schedule and engage either on campus or online in synchronized classes. Our private high schools and middle schools support different learning styles and understand how to engage students with different attention abilities. Gifted Students (2e Students) We welcome students who have or have been told they have, challenges with attention. Moving away from the distracting large classroom environment can allow students to focus on learning more effectively. Lydian Academy was built for students who have not thrived in a traditional school environment. By learning about each student’s strengths and abilities, these natural gifts can be leveraged to achieve each student’s goals. Our private high schools and middle schools support different learning styles and understand how to engage students with different attention abilities. Students with Health Challenges Students facing physical or mental health challenges often fall behind in a traditional classroom setting. Through no fault of their own, they may be unable to attend in-person classes on a regular basis, and even online coursework may not be possible at times. At Lydian, we support these students with flexibility, compassion, and an individualized curriculum and schedule that can keep them on track for college prep or other educational goals. Health is the first priority for many of these young people, and they face downstream challenges as well. Many students do not want to answer questions from classmates about where they have been and why. Our students are not forced to choose between what is best for their health and what is best for their education. We enable and empower these individuals to achieve their goals and support their own well-being. In particular, students with health obstacles value these flexible options: ● No fixed start or end dates for classes ● The ability to increase or decrease homework and course load to support recovery ● Hybrid coursework options to attend the same class either online or in person in Palo Alto, CA ● Accommodating scheduling around appointments, physical therapy, or counseling sessions Students Who Travel or Learn at Home For families that travel extensively, Lydian offers the unique opportunity to stay with the same instructors and school regardless of where they are when they attend high school or middle school classes online. Other students learn best in their home environment or find travel difficult. About Lydian Academy - One-on-One Middle & High School Summer School Starts Soon. What parents have to say about Lydian Academy: A learning difference diagnosed in 9th grade brought us to Lydian and since then he’s thrived there – able to realize his own academic potential . Lydian has afforded him the opportunity to develop and grow his own non-profit, has challenged him academically, and has supported him with the entire college application process (thank you Perla and Elisabeth!) from test proctoring to rec letters to AP course selection. Because of that academic support and intangible emotional support over the past four years he was recently admitted into an Ivy league university. Grateful Parent Jonathan Frecceri has been a wonderful guide and mentor to our son and our family. When our son first started Lydian, he was guarded about a new school environment. Since our first meeting with Jonathan, he quickly built a supportive and warm relationship with our son, who trusts and looks up to Jonathan for advice about his academic and career planning. For our son at Lydian- this school has been a great fit, and the teachers at Lydian and Jonathan have been incredibly supportive and accommodating. We are very grateful to see our son thriving at Lydian, and he has never been more positive about his education and his academic future. Benny Gavi Lydian was the perfect format for our son. It's all one-on-one teaching -- and our son was in a private room. Our son received all the attention he needed and he got to go at his pace. We were so thrilled with Lydian that when he started at Foothill college we hired Lydian to tutor him for his first year. I honestly can say that our son would not have graduated high school without Lydian. I will be forever grateful it was there for us. Jonathan and Perla have done an amazing job - they have continued to improve the school - it's now accredited!!! and they are building community for the kids in new and exciting ways. Ann Protter Our son not only got the challenge he needed in his classes but also a lot of understanding and support at Lydian. Jonathan came up with the right academic plan for him. The teachers we had were all excellent, even exceptional. The staff were always there to help. Jonathan was always enthusiastic, energetic, and ready to solve problems. His earlier training as a therapist brought a lot of understanding and empathy to the many challenges we had to face from when we first started picking up the pieces to eventually get to a very different place today. As parents of a 2e kid, we strongly recommend Lydian Academy as a place that we think can uniquely support others in a similar situation. AK The staff, administration, and even the other students at Lydian, embraced my 6th grade son when he arrived there. He was a challenging personality who, at that age, really needed support and guidance to help him develop social/emotional skills. In addition, the academics were fantastic. The ability to go at his own pace was crucial to keeping him engaged. Today he is a public school sophomore in AP Calculus and earning top grades. He has friends, gets along in classes, participates in extracurricular activities - none of which was something he could do when he arrived at Lydian. Bree Richardson ...our student is making great grades and most of the time loves his classes. They handled the pandemic very well and our student hardly missed a step. It's made all the difference. Good people who care. It's been an amazing transformation and very rewarding to see the commitment of the staff and how they've helped our son. A W As parents of a 2e kid, we strongly recommend Lydian Academy as a place that we think can uniquely support others in a similar situation. The teachers are wonderful, dedicated educators who make learning interesting and fun. The flexibility of scheduling is amazing. Lydian's Principal Jonathan Frecceri is a solid leader. He has managed the school, students, parents, staff and teachers with such care and compassion over these very challenging Covid years. While keeping safety in mind, he always put the students first. Lydian has a bright future as a fully WASC accredited school with two campuses, great leadership, teachers and many new programs being developed for after school activities Loren Gordon We offer a unique year-round one-on-one learning experience, personalized to you and your schedule.
