Read on for an overview on what causes canities, which is the technical term for gray hair and how to care for gray hair. What Causes Gray Hair? Don’t worry (literally)—no clear link between stress and gray hair has been found. What actually causes gray hair is as simple as normal aging. As we get older, we produce less of two enzymes: the first is an enzyme that helps break down hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is a well-known tool for bleaching hair, but did you know your hair cells actually make hydrogen peroxide? As we age, the amount produced increases and interrupts the hair pigment producing pathway causing hair to appear grey . With age, we also produce less of another enzyme that helps repair damaged hair follicles. This slowdown reduces the amount of pigment, or melanin, we produce. Melanin actually comes in two shades: eumelanin, which is a dark brown or black, and pheomelanin, which is yellow or red. These two melanins combine to create the variety of hair color we see. If the amount of melanin is reduced, hair turns gray. Once the production of melanin is stopped altogether, hair turns white . Is there a gene for gray hair? What exactly causes the reduced production of melanin has remained a mystery until recently, when an international team of researchers discovered the first gene linked to gray hair. This newly identified gene--IRF4--regulates and produces melanin. In total, researchers identified 18 genes responsible for the look and feel of hair, genes linked to hair shape, curliness, other genes linked to beard and eyebrow thickness, even a gene marker for unibrow. Clearly DNA and genetics factor in, but there’s no universal age that we go gray. Typically, Caucasians start going gray in their mid-30s, earlier if they are redheads, Asians in their late 30s, and African-Americans in their late-40s. Then there is something that dermatologists call the 50-50-50 rule: at age 50 years, 50% of the population has at least 50% gray hair. Gray Hair Care So what do you do if you find a gray hair? Or a few hundred? Below are our tips for gray hair care : • First—resist plucking. Perhaps you’ve heard the beauty myth that if you pluck a gray hair, three more will grow back in its place? While that is a myth, the actual truth may be worse. Like tweezing your eyebrows, plucking can traumatize the hair follicle and discourage regrowth. Translation: thinner hair in the long term, and possible bald patches. • Start from the inside out. Studies have shown that gray hair may be exacerbated by a lack of B12 vitamin and other nutrients in your diet. Healthy foods feed your hair the same way they nourish your body, so make sure you stay hydrated and choose healthy snacks high in protein and B vitamins, like liver and carrots. • There is also a significant association with smoking and tobacco use. Gray hair is more susceptible to discoloration and yellowing caused by the sun, chlorine, or mineral deposits in your water. To prevent this, rinse hair with water before and after swimming, or, better yet, wear a swim cap. • Protect hair in the sun with a scarf or hat, and consider adding a filter to your shower head if your water contains a lot of deposits. Of course, there is a silver lining to gray hair. While it may be coarser, gray hair is often thicker, stronger ... wiser. Highlights is a general term that simply refers to hair that is lighter than the base color. Contrary to popular belief, highlights are not just for blondes, but can refer to lightening strands of any shade of hair. Highlights are traditionally applied using a method called “foiling,” in which sheets of foil are used to separate strands of hair that have been covered with a color or lightener before wrapping them in the foil to process. The foil keeps the lightener from getting on the surrounding hair, and also traps heat, allowing the lightener to lift more effectively. Balayage is a free-hand technique of applying highlights, and does not usually use foil to separate the hair. Balayage creates soft and natural gradation of lightness along the hair strand—usually slightly deeper closer to the scalp and lighter towards the ends. Get Highlights OMBRÉ, SOMBRÉ, BABYLIGHTS AND BALAYAGE Balayage often carries the brunt of being an umbrella term . While other forms of highlighting might be related to balayage, not all fit neatly in this category. Ombré and Sombré speak more to the end result rather than the technique. Ombré is a more drastic, edgier version of balayage with a starker transition of dark to light, sometimes with a harder line where the transition starts. Sombré, on the other hand, is a soft, sunkissed transition of dark to light with the ends being only 1-2 levels lighter than the base color, and a seamless transition from roots to ends. Babylights are also a type of highlight. The result is achieved by taking extremely small, thin sections of hair for subtle, sun-kissed highlights. Luckily, balayage is easier to maintain than it is to spell , and our VP of Technical Design & Education, David Stanko, created a video to teach you how to keep your balayage from going brassy, and how to touch up your roots without busting up your beautiful balayage.   CREATING DIFFERENT TONES WITHIN THE SAME OVERALL COLOR You have: Red or brunette all-over color You want: Different tones within that base of color You need: Bowl and brush, two permanent colors Brunette doesn’t have to be just brunette, and red simply red. Adding golden, copper, mahogany, and violet tones can create richer shades of hair color. For a multi-tonal palette, select one tone to be your base or root color, and an alternate tone to add variation. Here is an example of how this would work: As a brunette, if your base color is a medium brown with hints of gold, you can add mahogany or auburn tones for variation. Simply apply your base hair color and touch up roots as you normally would. Then, take small panels of hair and paint the variation of color onto those select small sections, painting right up to the area where the root color ends. After you are done painting on the lowlights, close up your foils so the color doesn’t get on the rest of your hair. Use the color tint brush to alternate painting the two colors on various sections of hair. CREATING LOWLIGHTS (DARKER PIECES) IN UNIFORMLY COLOR TREATED HAIR You have: Dark blonde to medium brown color-treated hair You want: To make pieces pop by adding slightly darker tones You need: Your pre-selected darker shade, foil or plastic wrap, bowl and brush Sure everyone knows about highlights, but what about lowlights? Lowlights can add gorgeous depth and dimension. To add complexity to your color, simply choose a lowlight color 1-2 levels darker and typically of a slightly different tone than your base color. Here is an example of how this would work: If you have all-over red hair, you can make the red color pop by choosing another color one shade darker. Choose small pieces of hair where you want to add dimension, and place foil or plastic wrap under these small sections of hair. This creates a canvas for you to apply color, using your gloved fingers, the applicator bottle, or a brush. Pro tip—when adding lowlights, start a couple of inches back from the face. This lets the lighter colors stay nearest to your skin for a more a natural-looking effect. After you are done painting on the lowlights, close up your foils so the color doesn’t get on the rest of your hair. Allow to process fully for 35 minutes before shampooing out as normal. Madison Reed's Smart 8-Free formulas are free of ammonia, PPD, resorcinol, parabens, phthalates, gluten, SLS, and titanium dioxide — ingredients found in most box dye hair color. Every formula is enriched with keratin, argan oil, and ginseng root extract for rich and multi-dimensional color, 100% gray coverage and healthy-looking hair, color after color. Our cream conditioning color is dermatologist tested and crafted in Italy according to strict European Union (EU) safety standards for hair color formulation—meaning, we will never use certain potential ingredient offenders in our formulas. Instead, we’re shout-it-from-the-rooftops proud to use ingredients that nourish your hair. Everything we make is Leaping Bunny certified , the international gold standard of cruelty-free beauty. FREE OF Ammonia Ammonia is an ingredient commonly used in hair color. It has a strong odor, and exposure to ammonia fumes can irritate skin, eyes, throat, and lungs, causing watery eyes, itchy scalps, coughing, or burning. We never use ammonia in any of our formulas. Instead, we use ethanolamine, an ingredient that helps give predictable, permanent results, without any harsh odor. PPD PPD is short for para-phenylenediamine, a hair dye traditionally used to create darker shades of hair color. It is known to be an allergen and skin sensitizer. Contact with the skin can cause dermatitis in susceptible individuals. Although many manufacturers use PPD in their products, we have decided to use alternatives. We never use PPD in our hair color or in any of our formulas. One key ingredient used to replace PPD is PTD, a Para Toluene Diamine (PTD) ingredient called Toluene 2,5-Diamine Sulfate (TDS). Color with PTD creates the same rich, dark shades our clients love. While PTD can also be a skin sensitizer, PTD is generally shown to have a lower likelihood of allergic reactions than one would expect from the use of PPD. Our Color Reviving Gloss, Color Therapy™ Mask, and Root Touch Up do not contain PPD or PTD. Resorcinol Although it’s used in most permanent hair colors due to its efficacy in coloring hair, we never use resorcinol in our formulas as it is classified as a hazardous chemical and can be toxic to the immune system. In fact, resorcinol has been formally classified as an irritant by the European Union, and has been prohibited in cosmetic products in several countries. Resorcinol is a skin sensitizer, and can be one of the ingredients that users are allergic to in hair dye. We never use resorcinol in our ingredients. Instead, we use 2-methylresorcinol, which has a different molecular structure, and which the E.U. Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety classified as lower-grade skin sensitizer compared to resorcinol. Parabens Widely used in beauty products as a cosmetic preservative to promote longer shelf life, there is concern that parabens may interfere with the endocrine system. While current analysis concludes that they are safe at the levels presently used in other cosmetic products on the market, the long-term impact of parabens continues to be researched, so we do not use parabens in any of our formulas. Phthalates Phthalates are often used as solvents and plasticizers in shampoo and styling products, and many are banned in the EU. Some studies have found that phthalates might have some effects on reproductive hormones. We do not formulate products using ingredients that contain phthalates. Gluten Gluten is sometimes found in wheat proteins used to preserve the structure of the hair. However, for those that are sensitive to gluten, we decided to err on the side of caution, and have removed it from all of our formulas. We never use ingredients that contain gluten. Instead of wheat proteins, we use keratin, a natural protein found in both hair and skin, to preserve and strengthen hair. SLS or SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE SLS is a surfactant, meaning it lowers the surface tension between ingredients and creates the lather often associated with shampoo and other hair products. However, SLS is also known to strip the protein from hair, depleting the hair and scalp of beneficial protective oils. Products containing harsh surfactants like SLS are also known to contribute to color fade. In severe instances, SLS can also irritate the scalp, causing redness, dryness and itching. For this reason, we never use sodium lauryl sulfate in our products, opting instead to use sodium laureth sulfate, a gentler alternative. Sodium laureth sulfate is also used in our formulas to ensure a full, even application of color, and total removal of color from the scalp and hair while rinsing. Titanium Dioxide Some evidence shows that in high concentrations pigment-grade (powdered) and ultrafine titanium dioxide dust may be linked to cancer, allergies, immunotoxicity and organ system toxicity, among other problems. We never use titanium dioxide in any of our formulas. Cruelty We love animals. Nothing we make is ever tested on them. Everything we make is Leaping Bunny certified , which is an international stamp of approval that recognizes no animal testing is used or commissioned in any phase of product development by our company, its labs, or ingredient suppliers. We add additional keratin to strengthen and fortify hair. Keratin infuses hair with additional protein to restore elasticity and help prevent breakage. Argan Oil Argan oil is a multi-tasking ingredient that nourishes hair from root to tip. It contains vitamin E that can help repair damaged ends and protect hair from future breakage. It restores shine and adds natural smoothness, while hydrating and softening to leave hair feeling silky and healthy. Ginseng Root Extract Ginseng root extract is a unique fortifying ingredient, and is able to penetrate into the hair to improve individual strand strength, soften hair, and alleviate split ends. CREAM CONDITIONING FORMULA The delivery system of any hair color formula plays a key role not just in the performance of the color, but also in how the color affects the health of the hair and scalp. AGREEMENT TO TERMS Certain features of our Services may be subject to additional guidelines, terms, or rules (such as the Hair Color Bar Memberships and the Limitless Plus Membership (see below under “Purchases and Auto Delivery”)), which will be posted with those features, and are incorporated herein (“Supplemental Terms”). To the extent there are any inconsistencies with respect to specific aspects of certain Services between these Terms and any Supplemental Terms, the Supplemental Terms shall take precedence in relation to the specific aspects of the Services to which they apply. By using our Services, you agree to be bound by these Terms . CHANGES TO TERMS OR SERVICES We may modify the Terms at any time, in our sole discretion. If we do so, we’ll let you know either by posting the modified Terms on the Site, via the App and/or through other communications. It’s important that you review the Terms whenever we modify them because if you continue to use the Services after we have posted modified Terms on the Site or via the App, you are indicating to us that you agree to be bound by the modified Terms. If you don’t agree to be bound by the modified Terms, then you may not use the Services anymore. Because our Services are evolving over time we may change or discontinue all or any part of the Services, at any time and without notice, at our sole discretion. WHO MAY USE THE SERVICES MINOR POLICY Minors ages 13 through 17 are only permitted to receive Madison Reed Hair Color Bar service(s) with written consent and waiver of all potential claims from a parent or legal guardian as outlined below. A parent or legal guardian must be present at the Hair Color Bar to complete and sign the Parental Consent Form and Waiver for Minor Services (“Consent Form”) and remain present for the duration of time while Madison Reed performs the Hair Color Bar service(s) for the minor. The parent/legal guardian, minor and colorist will establish goals for the service(s). Madison Reed recommends a patch test for all minors prior to the performance of service(s). If the parent/legal guardian chooses to decline the patch test for the minor, the parent/legal guardian will be asked to sign a separate waiver on behalf of the minor. REGISTRATION AND YOUR INFORMATION If you want to use certain features of the Services you’ll have to create an account (“ Account ”). You can do this via the Site or App or through your account with certain third-party services such as: Facebook, Amazon, Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter (each, a “ TPS Account ”). ”). If you choose the TPS Account option, we’ll create your Account by extracting from your TPS Account certain personal information such as your name and email address and other personal information that your privacy settings on the TPS Account permit us to access. It’s important that you provide us with accurate, complete and up-to-date information for your Account and you agree to update such information, as needed, to keep it accurate, complete and up-to-date. If you don’t, we might have to suspend or terminate your Account. You agree that you won’t disclose your Account password to anyone and you’ll notify us immediately of any unauthorized use of your Account. You’re responsible for all activities that occur under your Account, whether or not you know about them. PURCHASES AND AUTO DELIVERY We may sell products and services via the Site or App, which will be posted on the Site or App, with the applicable price. We may change these prices at any time and reserve the right to do so. We will charge the default payment method or any other payment method we have on file for your Account (e.g., credit card) for the applicable products and/or services purchased, including, but not limited to applicable shipping fees (which will be disclosed to you prior to your purchase) and sales, use or other taxes (each, a “ Transaction ”). All amounts are payable and charged at the time your order is placed. You expressly authorize us (or our third-party payment processor) to charge you for such Transaction. We may ask you to supply additional information relevant to your Transaction, including your credit card number, the expiration date of your credit card and your email and postal addresses for billing and notification (such information, “ Payment Information ”). You represent and warrant that you have the legal right to use all payment method(s) represented by any such Payment Information. When you initiate a Transaction, you authorize us to provide your Payment Information to third parties so we can complete your Transaction and to charge your payment method for the type of Transaction you have selected. You may need to provide additional information to verify your identity before completing your Transaction (such information is included within the definition of Payment Information). By initiating a Transaction, you agree to the pricing, payment and billing policies applicable to such fees and charges, as posted or otherwise communicated to you. All payments for Transactions are non-refundable and non-transferable except at the sole discretion of Madison Reed. All fees and applicable taxes, if any, are payable in United States dollars. Title and risk of loss pass to you upon our transfer of the products to a common carrier. Our charges do not include any charges from your mobile carrier (e.g. data and messaging plans), which you are responsible for paying to your carrier. UPGRADING YOUR ORDER TO A SUBSCRIPTION At any time if you would like to become a member and purchase a subscription, you could elect to upgrade your order to a subscription during the purchase. When we are upgrading your order into a subscription order, you may see two charges related to your current order and the subscription order. However, when the upgrade process is completed, you will be charged once for the upgraded subscription order subject to the terms under the "SUBSCRIPTIONS" section below. SUBSCRIPTIONS You may place a recurring order for a product or service via the Site or App (each, a “ "Subscription" ”) for a recurring delivery to your home or for becoming a member at our hair color bars. BY PURCHASING A SUBSCRIPTION, YOU AUTHORIZE MADISON REED TO INITIATE RECURRING NON-REFUNDABLE PAYMENTS AS SET FORTH BELOW. If you purchase a Subscription, we (or our third-party payment processor) will charge your Account the first time you place this order, and then at the frequency thereafter set at time of purchase that you choose depending on the product and/or service you purchase until you cancel the Subscription.
