We use chord charts, tabs, and lyric sheets so students can start playing songs they love from the very first lessons, while building the skills and confidence that support a lifelong musical journey. This approach helps kids: Build rhythm and strumming fluency Develop strong ears and musical intuition Gain the confidence to play with others or sing while they play Begin writing their own songs, if they’re inspired to We focus on expression over perfection - encouraging students to play with heart, explore their own style, and enjoy the process. The vibe is relaxed, creative, and rooted in contemporary genres like folk, pop, and indie. Our goal isn’t to create virtuosos - it’s to nurture musicians who love playing and feel proud of what they can do. How Class Progression Works at Magnolia Our intro classes give kids a strong musical foundation. After completing Guitar 1 or Ukulele 1 , the next step can look a little different from semester to semester, since group sizes and scheduling change throughout the year. Most students continue in private lessons —either one-on-one or in small shared groups of 2–3 students when a good match is available. If a group of students is ready for the same next step, we may also offer a Guitar 2 or Ukulele 2 class. As students gain confidence and fluency, some eventually join our Mixed-Instrument Jam Classes , designed for kids who have a foundation on their instrument and are ready to play with others. When your class is wrapping up, we’ll always help you choose the right next step for your child. Early Childhood Music (Ages 1-5 with caregiver) Join Magnolia teacher Sara Jayne McDonald for a joyful, bilingual (English + Spanish) early-childhood music experience filled with singing, rhythm play, movement, and connection. Using puppets, scarves, and other playful props, Sara Jayne sparks curiosity and keeps little ones joyfully engaged while caregivers join in the fun. Sara Jayne has a way with young children that is simply magical. The first 30 minutes feature an action-packed, interactive music session, followed by 15 minutes of hands-on exploration — families can try out musical instruments, look through music-themed books, or simply enjoy a relaxed creative atmosphere together. After class, families are warmly invited to stay and mingle — take a few extra minutes to connect, chat, and let your children explore Magnolia’s cozy, welcoming space. $30 per class First time? Unexcused absences (less than 24 hours’ notice or a no-show) are not eligible for a makeup unless due to illness or family emergency. Up to two lessons may be rescheduled per term. Makeup credits are used during the dedicated makeup weeks at the end of the semester whenever possible. Summer 2026 and Beyond Beginning Summer 2026, private lessons are held as scheduled and are not canceled or rescheduled. If a student needs to miss a lesson, their teacher will provide a short video in its place so they can stay engaged and continue making progress. This approach allows us to maintain consistency for students and ensures that our teaching team is supported and prepared for each scheduled lesson. Health & Illness Policy To help protect our staff and fellow students, please keep your child home if they are showing signs of illness such as fever, vomiting, or any contagious condition. We’re happy to provide a makeup or online option when appropriate for students who need to stay home. Thank you for helping keep our community healthy and thriving! Refund Policy for Private Lessons Private lesson tuition is billed for the full semester. Once the term begins, tuition is non-refundable, as each timeslot is reserved for that student. Families who withdraw before the first lesson may receive a full refund, minus any registration or processing fees. In special circumstances (illness, family emergency, relocation), Magnolia may offer a prorated credit toward a future term. Shared Lessons (2-3 Students) Shared lessons blend individual coaching with the energy of learning alongside peers. Because the weekly flow depends on the group being present, policies differ from individual lessons. Attendance & Makeups Lessons continue as scheduled even if one student is absent. Makeups are not offered for individual absences, as the teacher continues working with the remaining students. If Magnolia ever needs to cancel a lesson, a makeup or credit will be provided during the dedicated makeup weeks at the end of the term. Semester Commitment Shared lessons require a full-semester commitment . The semester commitment begins at registration. Once a shared lesson spot is confirmed and tuition is paid, the time is reserved for the full term, and we are not able to withdraw or replace students outside of our emergency exceptions. If a Withdrawal Becomes Necessary In rare situations (such as illness, family emergency, or relocation), Magnolia may make accommodations at our discretion. Tuition is otherwise non-refundable once the term begins. General Notes Tuition is calculated based on the total number of scheduled lessons for the semester. Consistency helps support steady progress for all students. Magnolia will always communicate promptly if teacher cancellations or schedule adjustments become necessary. Group Classes and Choir Attendance & Makeups Because group programs involve shared activities and team progress, missed sessions cannot be made up or refunded. Materials (lyrics, recordings, etc.) may be shared to help students stay on track. If a class is ever canceled by the teacher, a rescheduled session or bonus class will be offered when possible. Refund Policy for Group Programs For choir: families may attend the first one or two rehearsals and request a full refund if it isn’t the right fit. For small-group classes (Guitar, Ukulele, Mixed Jam, Songwriting): families may attend the first class and, if they decide not to continue, receive a 50% refund for the remaining weeks. After the second class has occurred, all tuition is non-refundable, as your child’s spot is reserved for the full session. Summer Camps Attendance Because camps are short, immersive programs with limited enrollment, missed camp days cannot be made up or refunded . If your child needs to miss a day, we’ll do our best to help them rejoin the group smoothly when they return. In the rare event that Magnolia needs to cancel a camp day due to illness or emergency, we will make every effort to provide a substitute teacher or comparable solution. Refund Policy for Camps Camp enrollment reserves a full-week spot for your child, and staffing and materials are planned accordingly. Cancellations made 14 or more days before the start of camp are eligible for a full refund, minus a $50 administrative fee. Cancellations made 7–13 days before camp are eligible for a 50% refund. Cancellations made fewer than 7 days before camp , or after camp has begun, are non-refundable . If a serious illness or family emergency arises, please reach out — while refunds aren’t guaranteed, we’ll always try to respond with care and flexibility when possible. Transfers If space allows, families may request to transfer to a different camp week prior to the start of camp . Transfers are not guaranteed and depend on availability. Extended Care Extended care fees are non-refundable once camp has begun, as staffing is scheduled in advance. Admin and Scheduling To help keep things organized, all scheduling and administrative questions should go through Kat. This allows our teachers to stay focused on teaching and ensures consistent communication. You can always reach Kat at [email protected] with any questions about lessons, scheduling, or billing. Student Behavior Policy At Magnolia Music School, we create music together—and that means showing up for each other with care, focus, and respect. We want every student to feel supported and able to grow.  We know that being silly and having fun are part of being a kid, but during class time, our main goal is to learn and make music together. When a student is consistently disruptive, it can affect the experience for everyone. To help keep things positive and productive, we ask all students to follow these expectations: Stay Engaged: Please give your full attention during warm-ups, group work, and activities. Be Kind: Treat classmates, teachers, and assistants with respect and encouragement. Participate Fully: Try your best, take creative risks, and be open to learning something new. If a student is repeatedly disruptive after reminders and redirection, Magnolia Music School reserves the right to withdraw them from the program for the remainder of the session. We know kids are always growing, and we’d be happy to welcome them back when they’re ready to participate more fully. If a student is asked to leave a program for behavioral or safety reasons, we’ll work with families to determine an appropriate refund for the unused portion of the program. Any refund issued will be based on remaining sessions or days and will not include administrative or materials fees. Fingernail Policy For guitar and ukulele students, short fingernails on the “fretting” (left for most) hand are essential — it’s impossible to press the strings correctly or make clear notes with long nails. Please make sure your child’s left-hand nails are trimmed before each lesson or class. (strumming-hand nails can be a little longer if desired.) This may seem like a small detail, but it makes a huge difference in comfort, sound quality, and progress! Campers will explore lyric writing, melody, chords, and song structure through playful prompts, group sharing, and lots of creative momentum. Some campers will arrive with notebooks full of ideas, while others are just beginning to explore songwriting — either way, they’ll leave with new tools, confidence, and at least one song in progress (and often more than one). Throughout the week, campers will work on: lyric writing and storytelling melody + phrasing (finding a hook that sticks) chord progressions and song form arranging ideas for performance supportive feedback and creative sharing revising, strengthening, and finishing songs This camp moves quickly and works best for kids with a bit of instrument experience. Campers should be able to play at least four chords on guitar, ukulele, or piano, and be ready to sing and try ideas out loud in a small group. Depending on the group, campers may collaborate on a co-written song, experiment with simple harmony, and record rough “demo” versions of their songs to take home. Girl Scout Songwriting & Music Workshop Earn your Junior Musician Badge at Magnolia Music School! Scouts step inside a real music school to explore how music is created — from sound and mood to writing and performing a song of their own. Led by Magnolia’s founder, musician and educator Kat White , this 90-minute experience is joyful, creative, and badge-ready. This workshop covers all five steps of the Junior Musician Badge. 🌸 What Scouts Will Do Step 1 — Explore How Music Is Made Scouts discover how music communicates feeling and emotion. They explore different instruments and the moods they create, then experiment with rhythm and melody to see how sound becomes a song. Step 2 — Travel Around the World of Music Learn about music from different cultures and time periods. Scouts explore genres like classical, jazz, rock, and pop to understand their origins and characteristics. Step 3 — Check Out the Music in Your Life We discuss different careers in music and what musicians actually do. Scouts also reflect on the music they enjoy in daily life. Step 4 — Make Your Own Music Using a simple melody provided by Kat, Scouts work together to write a unique troop song about friendship, adventure, and teamwork. They’ll also sing some classic Girl Scout songs around the “campfire” (not real, but still magical!). Step 5 — Perform Your Music The workshop wraps up with Scouts performing their new troop song. Every troop leaves with: A lyric/chord PDF, an audio recording, and a video recording of their performance 💫 Workshop Details Length: 90 minutes Ages: Junior Scouts (ages approx 9-11). This workshop can also be customized to be perfect for other age groups!  Group Size: Up to 12 Scouts Location: Magnolia Music School, near the Morcom Rose Garden (Oakland) Fee: $20 per girl $150 minimum To schedule a workshop for your troop (typically on a Sat or Sun), please contact Kat at [email protected] Magnolia Music School Made with Squarespace Location 3929 Grand Ave Oakland, CA 94611 Contact [email protected] Magnolia Youth Choir — Magnolia Music School 0 Skip to Content About Programs Magnolia Youth Choir Group Classes Private Lessons Summer Camps Workshops Events Policies Resources Press Register Open Menu Close Menu About Programs Magnolia Youth Choir Group Classes Private Lessons Summer Camps Workshops Events Policies Resources Press Register Open Menu Close Menu About Folder: Programs Back Magnolia Youth Choir Group Classes Private Lessons Summer Camps Workshops Events Policies Resources Press Register Magnolia Youth Choir About Magnolia Youth Choir Join our warm, welcoming community of young singers! Their sound blends hopeful despair with dreamy optimism, weaving together original songs and an eclectic mix of indie rock and country covers. The band is fronted by a Magnolia parent, making this a special community show. Opening the evening are Tiny Fires , an Oakland-based indie-folk duo made up of Joe Sikelianos and Kat White. Their music combines textured guitars, rich harmonies, and storytelling that moves between the intimate and the playful. Kat is the founder of Magnolia Music School and creator of the children’s album In the Eye of the Owl . Joe, a professional arborist and songwriter, released his debut album Our Kind of Beast in 2023. These days, Tiny Fires mostly perform for an audience of cats — but they’re very happy to share their music with you, too.
