However, there are a few rules to follow. Minors in Classes and Workshops Equipment Training Classes and Workshops at Maker Nexus have varying minimum age requirements, and many are open to minors. Minors under 16 attending class must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. For Equipment Training classes, in order for a minor under 16 who is a Maker Nexus member to use the tools certified in the class outside of class time, a parent or guardian member will need to be certified for the same tools and operate the equipment with them. We recommend that minors and their parent/guardian take the certifying class together. For Workshops that do not certify any tools, the supervising adult does not need to be enrolled in the class with the minor but must be in proximity. We recommend that minors and their parent/guardian take the class together. Minors in Youth Programs Our Youth Programs have varying age requirements and are supervised by our Youth Instructors. Youth Programs students do not need to be accompanied. For more parent information about our Youth Programs, see here. Minor Members Minors ages 10 and up can be members of Maker Nexus. Minor members under the age of 16 must be the Family Add-On of a parent or guardian. Minor members under 16 years of age must be supervised at all times, and may use equipment which they have been trained on in one of our Equipment Training classes only if supervised by a parent or guardian who has also been trained on that equipment. Minor members ages 16 and up may be independent members of Maker Nexus. They may be, but do not need to be a Family Add-On, and do not require parent/guardian supervision. Minors ages 16 and up may qualify for a Student Membership if their parents are not members. Minors As Guests Minors may visit Maker Nexus as guests of members. Minor guests must be supervised at all times and may not use tools. Our makerspace would not be the exceptional place it is without these dedicated individuals. We’re also grateful for our wonderful volunteer Board of Directors who play a key role in setting our strategy and vision - and can often be found in the makerspace working on their own projects too.  Staff Kelly Yamanishi Co- Executive Director [email protected] Regina Sakols Co- Executive Director [email protected] Robin Salafia Operations Manager [email protected] Sarah W. Kramer Education Manager [email protected] Born in Santa Clara and raised in Sunnyvale, Sarah is a lifelong local through and through. Sarah's primary creative outlet is in textiles and historic garment construction, but has expanded into watercolors, digital design, succulent gardening, and laser-cutting with some dabbling in wood, metal, and other media. Her dual professional background in administrative support and instructional design are well-utilized in managing and improving the education and training programs at Maker Nexus. Sarah holds a Master's Degree in Education Policy, Organization, & Leadership Studies (POLS) from Stanford University and a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and Human Sexuality from San Francisco State University. Myles Barman Youth Programs Manager [email protected] Myles Barman has been teaching Makers of all ages to build their dreams since 2014. Myles comes to us from the now-defunct TechShop, where he wrote curriculum and taught on their laser cutters, waterjets and cnc mills. Before joining Maker Nexus, he was a CNC shop supervisor at Bay Photo. Jen Harte Business Development and Events Manager [email protected] Jen worked for the State of California as an analyst in the past, but left to pursue a path in teaching art, and has never been happier. Like many creative types, she is interested in a wide range of activities, but her forte is in oil painting. She also enjoys laser cutting, epoxy resin and fiberglass fabrication, wool and fiber arts, and many niche areas. (Ask her about extracting plant pigments to make her own watercolor paints!) She came to Maker Nexus as a summer camp instructor, and is currently the Business Development and Events Manager, coordinating all of our private events such as corporate team-building and birthday parties. Kyle Geenen Woodshop Manager [email protected] Originally from southern California, thinking outside the box and taking a unique perspective on solving any problem has always been the foundation on which Kyle's creative endeavors are built. From costumes and bedframes to leather armor and charcuterie boards, Kyle's taste and talents tend to be far reaching and as wildly eclectic as their designer. Kyle has had a wide variety of work experience from a few different construction trades, worked in the firearms industry for a decade and has even helped manage a sports pub for the better part of 12 years. His desire to always be making, modifying and creating have ultimately led to being the Woodshop manager here at Maker Nexus. Teaching is also a passion of his and he loves to share knowledge with others - so if you ever have a question or want to bend his ear about your projects, feel free to reach out and say hello! Like all of our staff and members, Kyle is dedicated to Maker Nexus' mission statement and firmly believes that we as creatives can and will make a difference in the lives of those around us. Sometimes all it really takes is to be in the right place at the right time, and an idea can flourish into something incredible. “Impossible is nothing but a challenge.” Ginger LaVelle Metal Shop Manager [email protected] Haley Moore Makerspace Specialist [email protected] Haley is designer, an artist, a writer, and a life long self-educator. They started their career as a propmaker in Alternate Reality Games in the 2000’s, and since then they have gone on to work in a variety of Makery fields. Before working at Maker Nexus, they were a robot personality creator for Hanson Robotics, the Art Director for Lothian Airsoft Theater, and the co-founder of a design company called Lady Brain Studios. They were a founding member of the Dallas Makerspace, and are delighted to now be serving the Bay Area Maker community. We are dedicated to providing the tools, resources, and training anyone may need to make their creative ideas a reality. Whether you want to learn how to wire your first circuit, or turn your thousandth wooden bowl on the lathe, our staff, classes, and facilities are here to help you along the way. 2025 Annual Report 2025 was a year of meaningful growth and momentum for Maker Nexus. With the support of our members, staff, instructors, volunteers, and community partners, we continued strengthening our role as a place where people come together to learn, build, and create. This growth allowed us to enhance programming, maintain and improve our facilities, and invest in new tools that help our members bring their ideas to life. Learn more about our ongoing impact in our 2025 Annual Report . View our 2024 Annual Report . Our Mission Maker Nexus empowers people of all ages and backgrounds to learn, create, and innovate. Our collaborative community provides access to hands-on training with professional-grade tools. We lower barriers to craftsmanship, build confidence, create opportunity, and foster a culture of creativity and resourcefulness across our region. The San Francisco Bay Area has always been a center for the maker movement; a nexus of creativity, innovation, and market disrupting inventions. After a national for-profit makerspace abruptly closed in 2017, a local group of craftspeople, hobbyists, students, and artists met to imagine what a new community-oriented makerspace for the Bay Area could look like. We organized a series of public town hall meetings and the turnout was greater than we could have imagined. It became clear that the makers in our area would step up and come together to create a new non-profit makerspace focused on empowering and educating the maker in each of us. We spent much of 2018 fund-raising, incorporating as a non-profit, and looking for real estate. We found our first home in northern Sunnyvale, and opened our doors for the first time in April 2019. Thus, Maker Nexus was born. Our Origin Story While planning our 1-year anniversary party in March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic reached California and we had to shut our doors to our membership. As a member-driven organization whose primary value is the physical use of the space, this presented a crisis of survival. Maker Nexus quickly pivoted from being a makerspace to a design, manufacture, and distribution hub for face shields and fabric masks , coordinating with volunteer makers and donors to deliver close to half a million units of PPE at no charge to healthcare professionals locally and across the country.  After 2 years, we outgrew our first facility and moved to our current location in summer 2021. We quadrupled our square footage, growing from a cozy 7,000 sq foot makerspace to a 28,000 sq foot building. Because move-in ready spaces that would fully meet our needs are rare, we are converting an office building with some warehouse space into a full service multi-media workshop. Currently our facility has separate areas for working with wood, cold and hot metal, textiles, electronics, 3D printers, laser cutters, and more. We also have a large event room, computer classroom, oversize build tables, dedicated member storage, and private studio space. A Place for Everyone We are dedicated to providing an inviting and harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, age, physical appearance or size, religion, political beliefs, or affiliation. We will treat everyone in our community - members, staff, students, and visitors - with respect, and we will not tolerate harassment or racism in any form. Our Pledge to the Community Maker Nexus is a registered California non-profit corporation and we have 501(c)(3) status. We vow to be a transparent organization, sharing everything from our financial plans and position, to our plans for development. We believe our maker members should know where their money goes, and have a say in how their monthly membership dues are being used. With our shop closed to members, we began making them with our otherwise idled laser cutters and 3D printers. Almost immediately, requests from healthcare workers began pouring in for these shields as well as cloth face masks. COVID Shield Nexus Maker Nexus COVID-19 PPE Project March - September 2020 Volunteer makers 575 Face shields fabricated 80,000 Soft cloth masks sewn 6,000 We recruited makers from across the United States. We needed help and so began an enormous effort involving almost 600 volunteers, mostly in the San Francisco Bay Area but, ultimately, around the US. This community of makers - with knowledge, equipment, and moxy - designed and 3D printed components, laser cut lenses, sliced elastic, assembled packages, and organized logistics to deliver thousands of face shields and cloth masks. The volunteers included youth and adults with their 3D printers, sewers with their home machines, colleges and companies providing equipment and operators, a landlord loaning warehouse space, pilots providing private planes and fuel, lawyers their pro-bono guidance, shippers, injection molders, and dozens coordinating requests from healthcare providers, sorting, packing, labeling, carrying and fund-raising. How We Made Our Face Shields We based our design on the RC2 Face Shield Assembly , designed by Prusa Research. To meet the demands of Bay Area healthcare providers, we modified Prusa’s Creative Commons -licensed design to cover the top of the head. We went through several iterations with healthcare providers to make sure they were ready to be deployed. Our community of 3D printer operators fabricated the headbands and bottoms of the shield. Back at the Maker Nexus building, we laser cut the clear plastic on our laser cutters. You can do this yourself with a single click in Amilia. Log in to your account and navigate to Purchases. Then scroll down to Memberships. Under your membership is a link that says "Cancel Membership". Alternatively, send an email to [email protected] and we will process it asap. Don't worry if it takes a few days, we will base any future renewals or charges on the day you emailed us. If a member stops or freezes their membership and restarts, we charge a start-up fee. However, we will waive that fee once in a 12 month period. If you stop/restart a second time within 12 months then we will charge you the start-up fee. If we had to cancel your membership due to non-payment then we will NOT waive the start-up fee if you rejoin. Can I start and stop my membership? Sure! A lot of makers come to the space for summer break, or just to work on one big project. So once per year, you can reinstate your cancelled membership free of charge. After the first rejoin in one year, we charge a reinstatement fee equal to one month’s membership. Can I get a day pass? In the interest of safety, we don't offer a one-day pass to use the tools in the space. We love having guests though! Come visit us any time. Can I donate equipment or time in exchange for a membership? Thank you for thinking of us, but we are unable to do so at this time. Can I get the Member Discount on Classes before my Membership starts? The Member Discount on all of our Classes and Workshops is part of the membership benefits, so you can't claim it unless your membership is currently active. Equipment Training Which tools require training before I can use them on my own? Most power tools, computer controlled tools, and large equipment require certification before you can use them independently at Maker Nexus. We do not require training for use of our domestic sewing machines, soldering equipment, or common hand tools. How can I get trained? We offer Equipment Training Classes regularly. These basic safety training classes usually last 1-4 hours on a single day. They have a fee attached, but Maker Nexus Members receive a 30% discount on the class fee. Classes & Workshops Are your classes only for members? All of our classes and workshops are open to the public, but Members get a discount on classes. Can kids attend Maker Nexus classes? Yes! Minimum ages in our regular classes range from 10 to 18. Age requirements are listed in each class's description, and you can also filter by age in our Amilia Store . If you're interested in kid-centered programs for makers as young as 6 years old, check out our Youth Programs page. How much do classes cost? The cost of a class varies depending on the length of the class and the materials used. A typical 2-hour training class costs $50 for non-members and $35 for members. A typical 3-hour workshop costs $70 for non-members and $63 for members. When will I qualify for the member discount on classes? You qualify for member discounts as soon as your membership is active; in most cases, this is immediately after you've purchased your membership in Amilia. If you buy your membership and classes in the same transaction, the discount won't be applied. How do I cancel a class? Up to 48 hours before the start of a class, you can cancel your class/workshop registration or request a change by emailing [email protected] with the subject “Class Cancellation Request” or “Class Change Request” or by calling (408) 685-2500. Please see our Cancellation Policy for more information. What is your cancellation policy for classes? Our Classes and Workshops cancellation policy is based on how far in advance of class you cancel. See our Cancellation Policies page for more information. Where am I on the waitlist? People sometimes cancel very close to class time, so our waitlist system doesn't take its time going down the list in order. Every person on the list receives an email as soon as a spot becomes available, and it's first-come first-serve. This is different from our Youth Camps, which do use an ordered waitlist. Your Projects Is there an hourly charge for using equipment? No, we never charge a fee for time spent using any tools. We only charge for consumables like ink and filament. Can I sell what I make? Of course! Many of our members sell their work in person and online. Our front lobby includes a retail area with supplies for laser cutting, 3D printing, and vinyl cutting, as well as sanding consumables, router bits, and other small supplies. We don't carry stock of metal or wood products, other than laserable plywood. Most areas of the space also have scrap supplies, which are great for experiments and smaller creations. :) Can I reserve time on a machine? Yes! Here's an overview of how this works: Benefits for the Donor: No Capital Gains Tax: If you donate appreciated stocks that have increased in value since purchase, you won't have to pay capital gains tax on the appreciation.  Tax Deduction: You can claim a tax deduction for the full market value of the stock at the time of the donation, not just what you originally paid for it. This can be a substantial deduction, depending on the current value of the stock. Simplified Process: Donating stock directly is often simpler than selling the stock and then donating the cash proceeds.  Benefits for Maker Nexus: Supporting  our  Mission: Your stock donation directly helps Maker Nexus in our mission to lower barriers of access to the tools and equipment that empower innovation for all and helps us expand our reach in delivering our programs to underserved youth Larger Donation : For the same cost to you, you can make a larger donation to Maker Nexus. In summary, donating stock to Maker Nexus is a tax-efficient strategic way to support a worthy cause while also obtaining financial benefits.  Scholarships Your donation can sponsor a deserving member of the local community to take classes, become a member, or fund an educator.  Examples: Our camps for kids are a great opportunity to learn and grow, but not all families can afford to send their children to camp. Others in our community can't afford the monthly dues to join our makerspace. Your donation can also sponsor a makerspace membership for a deserving local STEAM educator.  You can make a difference - contact us to discuss funding a scholarship Thanks To Those Who Support Us We have received many generous donations and with much gratitude we acknowledge our Sponsors and Donors.
