Both use an independent review process to evaluate exam prep products. Best In-Person for MBA Applicants Best All-Around GMAT Prep Course Editor's Choice for Best GMAT Tutors FAQs What is the GMAT? The GMAT is an entrance exam used for MBA and other business programs; you can take it online or in-person. It tests your logical, analytical, and quantitative reasoning skills—all things you’ll need to excel in grad school. Getting ready for the GMAT can actually help you to get ready for b-school itself. How long is the GMAT? Including breaks, you’ll spend a little less than 3.5 hours taking the GMAT. The GMAT consists of four sections: Quant, Verbal, Integrated Reasoning (a mix of quant and verbal), and the Essay (formally known as the Analytical Writing Assessment). How hard is the GMAT? The GMAT is definitely not an easy exam. It’s a computer adaptive test (CAT), which means that it actually adapts to you as you take it. As you answer questions correctly, the test will give you harder ones (and, when you miss problems, it will give you easier ones). As a result, the GMAT feels hard for everybody, even when you’re well prepared. But there’s a big benefit: The process of studying for the GMAT will also help prepare you to excel in grad school. What is a good GMAT score? A good GMAT score is one that’s above the average for your target school. Most schools publish their average scores, so do your research. The GMAT is just one component of your application. You can still gain admission to a school even with a below-average-for-that-school score (by definition, lots of admitted students will be below the average!), but your chances improve if you are above a school’s average. How do I study for the GMAT? Studying for the GMAT is like taking a semester-long, university-level course, so you do have some work to do. (But you want to go to grad school, right? It shouldn’t be easy.) You’ll need three types of materials to get ready: Practice questions, practice tests, and material that teaches you the facts, rules, and strategies you’ll need in order to get better and faster at answering those questions. You can buy official practice questions and tests from the test-maker at mba.com —but the official materials don’t teach you how to get better. For that, look for material from a test-prep company. First, try all the free GMAT materials you can find, then decide what you want to buy. How long do I study for the GMAT? Most people study for between 2 and 6 months. The timeframe depends on two major data points: Your current scoring level and the final score you want to get. Take a practice test to learn your current level. Look at the websites of your target schools to set a goal for your final score. If you’re looking for either a large score increase (200+ points) or an exceptionally high score (655+), you’ll probably be studying for 4 to 6 months. When should I take the GMAT? Plan ahead! GMAT scores are good for 5 years, so ideally get your GMAT out of the way well before you have to start filling out applications. (US full-time programs typically release applications in June or July.) Consider starting your studies in January of the year in which you want to apply or even a year or two before that. Life intervenes sometimes—if you get a new job or a great promotion, you may want to put your GMAT studies on hold for 6 months to get yourself into the new groove. Free GMAT Prep Free GMAT Resources GMAT Blog Free GRE Prep Free GRE Resources GRE Blog FAQs Is Manhattan Prep a good test prep option? Manhattan Prep is a great test prep option. Manhattan Prep is the premier provider of GMAT , EA and GRE test prep. All Manhattan Prep instructors score in the 99th percentile on the exams they teach, have years of teaching experience, and create all of our test prep lessons, books, practice problems, and other study materials. They’ll teach you to ace the GMAT, EA or GRE, just like they did! How much does Manhattan Prep cost? Expect to spend between $50 and $350 for books and other self-study materials. If you want to add on-demand prep courses with interactive video lessons, it will cost you between $300 and $999. And if you’d prefer a live test prep course (with all study materials included), you’ll spend about $1,000 to $2,000. How is Manhattan Prep for the GMAT, EA, and GRE? Manhattan Prep instructors know how to ace the GMAT , EA and GRE exams (they’ve all scored in the 99th percentile) and they know how to teach you to get the test score you need as efficiently and effectively as possible. How do I access Manhattan Prep practice tests? Sign up for a Free Starter Kit account to get one free GMAT or GRE practice test (as well as a bunch of other free test prep resources). If you want more, you can buy GMAT , GRE practice tests on our site—or sign up for a self-study or course package, both of which come with practice exams. Are Manhattan Prep practice tests harder? A lot of people think that Manhattan Prep practice tests are harder than the real thing. We do our best to mimic the official exams as closely as we can…but we also don’t want the real test to feel harder than anything you’ve ever practiced. So, yes, if we do have to err on one side or the other, we try to err a little on the harder side. (We do adjust our scoring algorithm, though, to try to mimic as closely as possible the score that you might get on the real test.) Is test prep worth it? It’s rare for someone to do well on a standardized test without any study material or prep courses at all. After all, it’d be rare to do well on a school test if you didn’t study. So you’re probably going to need to buy at least some study material, but you can decide what you think is of best value for you. The other thing to keep in mind is your potential reward: A higher score could get you into a higher-ranked school or earn you grants, fellowships, or other scholarships—in other words, an investment in test prep could pay for itself many times over. What is the best test prep? Manhattan Prep is the biggest GMAT test prep provider in the world. All Manhattan Prep instructors score in the 99th percentile and have extensive teaching experience—and they create all of our test prep materials. If you feel comfortable following your own study plan and keeping yourself motivated, you might find it best to study from books; get the GMAT Official Guide (from the test makers) for official practice problems and test prep books to help you actually get better at answering those problems. If you would like a more structured study plan built for you, use an on-demand prep course with interactive videos. Alternatively, if you’d like a full study plan plus direct access to an expert, take a live prep course or work with a private tutor . How do I prepare for a test online? Taking your exam online is very similar to taking your exam in person. The online exams still cover the same content area and question types and they still use the same scoring mechanism. There are some minor differences related to your scratch paper when taking the GMAT Online or GRE Online ; you’ll also have to set up a quiet space with a steady internet connection from which to take the exam. Other than that, studying for an online exam is pretty much the same as preparing for a testing-center exam. tests gmat gre Executive Assessment company Our Story Instructors Team Jobs Partnerships call us (800) 576-4628 email us [email protected] connect which test? Here’s What We Learned. by Mary Richter Feb 22, 2021 You’re in luck—everything you’ve wondered about the GRE at home is here. Not only are we going to cover technical requirements, such as what to do before test day, and what to expect on test day, but we’re also going to cover the experience taking the GRE at home from the perspective of a single person (“Stuart”)—during 2020, that is. Stuart told me about his experience and so I just want to make sure you know that this isn’t necessarily what your experience will be like. Still, in case it might be helpful, we decided to report how it went down for one of our teachers . (Stuart isn’t his real name.) To get started, what happens first? Your tech requirements First, you’ll have to install the ETS Test Browser as well as the appropriate web browser and extension (ProctorU recommends the Chrome browser). You’ll also have to run the ProctorU system check . Once you’re inside ProctorU, you have the option of filling out a Live Technician form to chat with a technician if you want to—this is optional. It’s straightforward—you just give the technician access to your computer, and they can then see and hear you over your webcam. They can also take over your mouse (like they will during your actual test). If you have bad luck and experience a tech-related issue on test day that is so extreme that it prevents you from taking the test, all’s not lost. Yes, it’s annoying, but you’ll probably be given the option to reschedule your exam for free. I’ll talk more about this momentarily. In general, be sure to carefully check out the technical requirements on the ProctorU resource center page and the ETS At Home information page prior to your test day. You are allowed to take the GRE on a computer, but not a mobile device. As of this writing, you can use a PC or a Mac. Oh, and ETS is now offering the GRE at home to test takers requiring accommodations, but be sure to confirm your accommodation with both ETS and ProctorU before your test to ensure that you’re all set. Registration/Scheduling You can register and pay for the exam here . After creating an ETS account, logging in, and locating the “Register/ Find Test Centers, Dates” button, you will select the GRE General Test. From here, you should be able to choose the “test at home” choice. (Hover over the “info” icon for the essential requirements.) Before you can pick your test date and exact time, you’ll need to both register and pay your fee of $205. The at-home test is administered 24/7 as of this writing. Finally, ETS will send you an order confirmation via email. You’ll get a separate email with instructions for scheduling your test date and time, which you should receive within 24 hours. You’ll be given an initial password, but, as always with initial passwords, our suggestion is to change it to a password that you’ll easily remember. Finally, after doing all of this, you’ll get your test reservation and see a countdown timer on your ProctorU dashboard. Rescheduling/Cancellation According to the ETS website, the normal cancellation policy applies to the at home GRE—you’ll need to cancel at least 4 days in advance in order to receive a partial refund. However, you can reschedule your test for free at any time before your appointment. Just go to your ProctorU dashboard. Getting ready for test day As of this writing, the official website FAQ page does not address accommodations. However, several of our students have been told that accommodations are not being offered for the at-home option, and that test takers requiring accommodations will need to wait until testing resumes at test centers. It is possible this policy could change, and we will update this post as we learn more. Getting Ready for At-Home GRE Test Day Here’s the most important part: since you’ll have to use a surface that you can erase on (like a white board that teachers use in classrooms) for scratch paper, you will need to buy one. If you order one online, be sure to allocate plenty of time for it to arrive. Deliveries are still delayed, so be generous about this time allocation! You should watch the Student Walkthrough Video so that you know what the check-in process will be like. Be sure also to check out the ETS At Home information page as well as the Pre Exam Checklist Video . What to expect on test day Half an hour before your scheduled time (this is according to ETS, that is—ProctorU doesn’t actually tell you that you need to be early at all, so this is just playing it safe), sign in on your ProctorU dashboard . You’re no longer trying to lift your scoring level. Instead, focus on hitting your peak performance on Game Day—like an Olympic athlete who’s trying to peak for the gold-medal match. Your current scoring level isn’t just a single value. It’s actually a range of values—and a pretty wide one, probably about 30 to 60 points, depending on your scoring level. On Game Day (the day you take your official test), you could have a great day and hit the top of your range…or you could have a bad day and hit the bottom of your range. So let’s talk about how to hit your peak performance on Game Day! (This post has been updated for the new GMAT.) What’s that mean? by Manhattan Prep Mar 17, 2025 Let’s just put it right out there: the Quantitative Comparison (QC) question type is bizarre. If you’re just starting out, you’re probably thinking, What is this thing? Even if you’ve been studying for a while, unless you really like math, you likely feel a little uncomfortable whenever a QC question pops up on the screen. Why? Because we all realize that we could completely mess up a QC question and still get to one of the 4 answer choices, clueless that we’ve messed up. It’s not like the questions with the 5 regular answers, where at least I know when I mess up because my answer isn’t in the answer choices! Do you want a good GRE score for a PhD program in medieval history, or for an EMBA at your state university? Do you have weak college grades but ten years of work experience, or are you a current student with a 4.0 GPA? But in other ways it can be harder. Being alone and/or indoors for extended periods of time can feel isolating, and the situation that has given rise to the social distancing causes anxiety for many of us. My plan this week was to write a post on how to create an in-person study group, but since that’s not possible (nor a good idea) at the present date, I’ve decided to share ideas for how you can create an online GRE study group. A: The biggest difference between Manhattan Prep and our competitors is our commitment to hiring only the most qualified instructors. A lot of companies purport to have strict score requirements – but for us, that’s just the beginning. Check out the next question for more information about why our instructors are the best around! In addition to instructor caliber, our approach to course content and our focus also differentiate us from other test prep companies. Our curriculum is based on the academics of the tests, not tricks or quick fixes to get around the material. Our books delve deep into the mathematical and verbal concepts that underlie the questions on the exams, and our courses are comprehensive – we want to ensure that you have a thorough understanding of how the test works before you sit down to take it on test day. Q: What makes your instructors unique? A: All of our GMAT, LSAT, and SAT instructors have scored in the 99th percentile on their respective tests (currently a 760+ for the GMAT, 172+ for LSAT, 2220 for SAT), and our GRE instructors have scored at least 167 out of 170 on each of the two sections of the GRE. We make sure that all of our instructors are true experts on the test(s) they teach. In addition to a top score, instructor candidates are also required to have extensive teaching experience in order to qualify for an interview. We narrow down the pool of eligible candidates through multiple rounds of online interviews, passing only the strongest applicants through to the final round. These finalists are flown to New York to audition in front of members of our Executive and Instructor Development teams. When we hire an instructor (historically only 1 of every 7 invited to New York), he or she undergoes 100+ hours of training and a final assessment before teaching our students. We also pay our instructors $100 per hour, up to four times the industry standard – this allows us to retain the highly qualified instructors who’ve successfully passed through our rigorous hiring process. You can read more about the background of all of our individual instructors on our Instructor Bio Page here ! Q: Can I try out your program(s) for free? A: Yes! If you would like to participate in a sample online or in-person class before registering for a Complete Course, you may sign up for a Trial Class. Registering for a Trial Class allows you sit in on the first session of a course before committing to the full program. You will be able to participate along with the other students in the class, and get a feel for the instructor’s teaching style. Please note that signing up for a Trial Class does not guarantee you a spot in the course, however, which may sell out before the first session takes place — if there is a class that you really want to take, we recommend signing up in full and putting down at least the deposit to secure your spot. Back to top Our Programs Q: What programs do you offer? A: We have a number of different options with varying price points and timelines. For GMAT, LSAT, and GRE preparation, we offer Complete Courses, which are a live, traditional classroom-style courses that meet either online or in-person. We also offer one-on-one Private Tutoring, as well as different On-Demand and Self Study options. If you are interested in a certain test, we recommend looking as those specific choices — click here for GMAT options, here for LSAT options, here for GRE options, and here for options for the Executive Assessment. Q: What is the course registration deadline? How do I know whether there are still seats available? A: Registration for any Complete Course will close the day of the second class session, or when the class reaches capacity — whichever comes first. If a class is sold out, it will be listed as a “Waiting List” on the website. If the course is not listed as a Waiting List, that means that there are still spaces available. Q: I see there is a Waiting List for the class I wanted to join; how does that work? A: If a class sells out before the first session, we will open up a Waiting List. It is free to join the list, so we encourage you to do so if you’re very interested in the sold out class. In the event that a registered student drops the class, we will begin contacting students on the Waiting List. If we reach your name, you will receive a phone call and/or email from us, usually including a deadline by which we need to hear from you regarding whether you'd like to claim the spot — please be sure, then, that your contact information in your account is up to date. If we do not hear from you by the stated deadline, we will move down the list and offer the slot to the next student in line. Please note that spots don’t open up very often, so if you're eager to get started we recommend signing up for an alternate course. Q: My class doesn't start for a few weeks; what can I be doing to prepare? A: We recommend that you complete a full practice exam before the first class session, in order to receive a baseline score that can be used to gauge your progress during the course — if you haven't taken one recently, this is a great way to dive into the material before your class starts. We know that taking your first practice exam can be intimidating, but it’s important to familiarize yourself with the exam early on and get an accurate picture of your strengths & weaknesses. So don’t worry if your first practice test score falls below your target range – think of it as a warm-up! If you are fully registered for one of our courses, you'll be able to access your practice exams through your Student Center (click here for GMAT, here for LSAT,and here for GRE). It also can't hurt to take a moment to explore the other resources in your Student Center, and browse through all of the books that you received as part of the course. Is there a topic that you're particularly anxious about? Crack open that Strategy Guide and read a chapter or do a problem or two — even something as small as this can help you feel more prepared for class. Q: How much homework should I expect each week? A: You should plan on spending a minimum of 10-15 hours on homework outside of class each week. Different students work through the assignments at different speeds, however, so once you're a week or two into your program, you'll have a better sense of how much time you personally need to complete your weekly assignments. We recommend studying for a few hours every day, rather than cramming all of your assignments into a day or two – spreading out your studying will help you better retain what you've covered. You will also want to plan on a couple of extra hours during the weeks when you want to take a practice exam. Q: Are there any differences between the in-person and online course? A: The content covered and the excellent quality of instruction are exactly the same in our in-person and online courses. If you prefer a live test prep course (with all GRE study materials included), you’ll spend about $1,399 to $1,599. On-demand prep courses with interactive video lessons will cost between $299 and $499. A Foundations of Math GRE Course will cost only about $200. Are Manhattan Prep GRE practice tests harder? A lot of people think that Manhattan Prep GRE practice tests are harder than the real thing. We do our best to mimic the official exams as closely as we can...but we also don’t want the real test to feel harder than anything you’ve ever practiced. So, yes, if we do have to err on one side or the other, we try to err a little on the harder side. (We do adjust our scoring algorithm, though, to try to mimic as closely as possible the score that you might get on the real test.) How accurate is Manhattan Prep's GRE Practice Test? As accurate as possible. We’ve studied all the released test questions and developed a scoring algorithm that closely matches the real GRE. Manhattan Prep also hosts the only adaptive GRE practice tests that include an unscored experimental section, making Manhattan Prep the only place that recreates the full structure and experience of the official test. Are GRE prep courses worth it? Preparation is essential for the GRE. The best preparation depends on you as a student, your starting point, and your goal score. If you’re a great self-studier, the Interact Lessons may be a perfect fit. If you get a lot out of working with an instructor, a course or tutoring may be better. Whatever you decide, develop a study schedule and check in frequently to make sure you’re making the progress you intended. What is a good GRE score? An average GRE score is around 150 to 153 for each section. A good GRE score depends entirely on your goal school. Some schools put a high emphasis on the GRE, and others don’t. A “good” GRE score can be anywhere from 150 to 170. Explore your goal school’s site to see where they want you to fall on that spectrum. How long/much should I study for the GRE? On average, students tend to study about 3 months for the GRE, though some spend significantly more or less time than that. An in-depth look at the GRE, either through a course or self study, often takes around 2 months, and we recommend an additional month of review and practice after that to perfect the new skills you are developing. Typically students study around 10-20 hours per week during that 3 month period. How hard is it to pass the GRE? It depends entirely on your current comfort level with the GRE and your ultimate goal. Improving your GRE score requires mastering content you may have forgotten or maybe never even learned, along with developing new skills that apply specifically to the test. The GRE is not an easy exam, and most test-takers will have to devote at least a few hours a week for a couple of months to studying before they feel prepared. I am eligible for GI Bill Benefits. Our goal this year is two-fold: Improve our scholars’ experience by focusing on impact beyond removing the financial barrier of a class and offer more scholarship opportunities to students. Typically, we’re able to serve three students a quarter. In order to meet our commitment in 2020 to expand our scholarship opportunities, we have partnered with trusted partners to increase this number. During this past quarter, we received another record-breaking number of applications—the second record in as many quarters! We are so proud to announce that we were able to offer scholarships to 13 outstanding individuals this quarter. This is an incredible group of students and we’re humbled to be with them on their journey. Congratulations to our Q2 2020 Scholars! George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, and Nina Pop were killed senselessly. This was a reckoning for the country and companies across many industries came out with statements of solidarity. We were not unusual in this, and our full statement is available below. From universities to yoga studios, educational institutions are increasingly turning to free virtual classrooms for online teaching and learning. This move to remote learning requires remarkable agility from administrators and leaders, who in many cases are scrambling to train a large group of teachers very quickly for the transition. Read more tags training teachers share Formative Assessment in an Online Classroom by Jonathan Schneider Apr 23, 2020 Checking students’ understanding throughout a lesson or unit, often called “formative assessment,” is an essential part of a teacher’s work. Without these checks, a lesson risks being too easy or too difficult, and thus a waste of time. As teachers, we want to deliver the right level of challenge to each of our students, and this requires that we both diagnose their starting points and assess their levels of understanding throughout the lesson. It’s easy to lose people if we make assumptions about our students’ level of understanding. For many instructors, this shift poses technological and pedagogical challenges, but for K-12 instructors, it also poses behavioral challenges. As a former middle school teacher, I’d imagine that upper elementary, middle, and high school teachers are having visions of Zoom bombing, inappropriate camera usage, private chat gone awry, and annotation tools used like spray paint. Even though it’s already springtime, starting online school may feel like going back to September: students will need to learn a whole new set of routines and norms. Read more tags classroom management share Adapting to Online Teaching by Misti Duvall Apr 23, 2020 Here at Manhattan Prep, we’ve been offering online classes for more than a decade and have a deep bench of experience and ability when it comes to teaching online. Several of our instructors teach solely online and love it. My problem? I’m not one of them. Until last month, I taught almost exclusively in-person. That’s partly because there’s a strong market for in-person classes where I live, and partly because I prefer it to teaching online. I like being able to connect with students in-person and see students get to know and work with one another. There’s a rhythm to teaching in-person; a way of reading the room and facilitating a dynamic discussion that can feel like conducting an orchestra when it goes well. And I rely heavily on the ability to walk around the classroom, see a student’s work, and provide quick, individual feedback. I’ve found myself both daunted by the challenges that teachers at all levels are facing and impressed by the commitment and resilience in the face of such a sudden and enormous change. Read more tags student support share Ten Ways to Get Your Students Talking in an Online Class by Ally Bell Apr 23, 2020 If you’ve recently started teaching online, you may have discovered that, like so many activities in the time of coronavirus, it can be a lonely experience. Virtual classrooms have the potential to foster strong interpersonal connections, but it doesn’t feel that way when you’re looking at a sea of black screens generated by off-camera, off-mic participants logged in as “iPhone 2.” In the past few weeks, I’ve interacted with instructors of all varieties who are looking for the “secret sauce” of student engagement in the online classroom. Learn when to use which in this post! When you take the GMAT Online , you’ll have access to both a physical whiteboard and an online one. The key is going to be knowing when to use which and practicing ahead of time so that everything feels seamless on test day. (Math? Definitely the physical whiteboard. Time management strategy? Probably online whiteboard. We’ll figure it all out in this post.) This post addresses the classic GMAT; here’s the GMAT Focus version of this article . Our fabulous tech team replicated the official online whiteboard tool to allow you to practice under official test conditions in advance of the test, including the ability to resize the board and place it wherever you want on your test screen. If you have any type of syllabus with us, including our free Starter Kit syllabus , the online whiteboard is ready and waiting on your CAT exam page. (No MPrep syllabus? Get a free one—just follow that link. You’ll also get a free practice exam and a free suite of foundational math and verbal study materials.) If you already have any type of account with us, log in and head to the practice exams or just click this link (you need to be logged in already in order for that link to work—FYI). Here are the official requirements for the physical whiteboard that—yes—you have to buy yourself for the GMAT Online. (If you’re taking it in the testing center, they’ll provide the scratch paper for you. It’ll look like this .) You’ll want to take at least a couple of practice tests using your physical whiteboard to figure out exactly how you want to use it. So shop now. One more thing. Be prepared to take the exam online even if you plan / hope to take it only in the testing center. Centers could close again, but the GMAT Online is here to stay—so prepare yourself just in case you have to change formats in the end. Requirements for the physical whiteboard The maximum dimensions of the whiteboard are 30 by 50 centimetres (why, yes, I am in Canada 🙂 ) or 12 by 20 inches. It does need to be a dry-erase board, not a wet-erase* product, and it does have to have a plain white background (no colors or grid lines). And buy a double-sided whiteboard—it’s allowed and it gives you double the “real estate” on which to write! (*If you have our Yellow Pad , you can’t use this for the GMAT Online. The Yellow Pad is still used for your scratch paper in the testing center, though, so it’s good practice for that format.) You can have one eraser and two dry erase markers—definitely have two markers and make sure they’re new or almost-new. Here’s a partial list of what GMAC has said we can’t use. This isn’t an exhaustive list of what’s prohibited, though, so look for the largest whiteboard that fits the max size limits but go for simple after that—white, boring, basic. How the online whiteboard works Would you rather read or watch? This table lays out how to use each tool, in order as they appear on the screen from left to right and top to bottom. The same info is also in this video . Your choice! Tool How to Use Pencil / Pen. Write or draw anything you want. You can choose a thickness; set it to one of the smaller settings. The whiteboard will remember what you chose. Eraser. Choose the greatest setting for thickness. The whiteboard will remember what you chose. Line. Draw straight lines. Can also make dashed lines and arrows. Use when it’s important to have perfectly straight lines or to make a grid. (So…probably not necessary.) Rectangle. Use for geometry or when you want to make a box or grid.
