To get there, we have made a commitment to redesign our educational ecosystem so that race, ethnicity and poverty no longer determine opportunity or outcome.   Unfortunately, 25,000 young people from infants to college graduates, more than 45% of all youth in Marin, are impacted by a system that was not designed with equity in mind. Because of this, about 60% of them are not yet meeting key Milestone outcomes.   This is unacceptable and is why over 100 youth and family leaders, community organizations, funders, and public agencies - have come together as an integrated, Cradle-to-Career network to advance educational equity across Marin.   Together, we are working to improve outcomes for all students while accelerating success for those most impacted by historical biases and structural racism.   To achieve this, Partners are breaking down silos, building relationships, transforming systems, and improving lives by …   Aligning around a common vision of an integrated Cradle-to-Career system, Using shared data to hold each other accountable, and to learn and lead with integrity, Taking courageous, collaborative antiracist action, and Jointly advocating for bold shifts in policies, practices, resources and power structures.   By combining Backbone support in team facilitation, shared data, and collaborative communications with the lived experience and professional expertise of individual and institutional Partners, together we are accomplishing what none can do alone. English español Haga clic aquí para ver en español Cradle To Career Milestones Marin Promise Partners have come together to align their individual programmatic efforts into a seamless system of support for all students Cradle-to-Career. To do so, they have agreed upon a shared set of 6 key milestone outcomes. While each partner plays a unique role in achieving these milestones, together, with the support of Backbone Staff, Partners are holding each other collectively accountable to equitable results for all kids at every stage along their educational journey. What does success look like? Hover over any of the Milestones below to learn more Kindergarten Readiness Early Childhood Education will prepare children 0-5yrs to enter school ready to succeed, as measured by Kindergarten cohorts achieving “Ready To Go” on the Kindergarten Student Entrance Profile (i.e. 47 on the KSEP). Early Grade Literacy Early Grade Education will enable K-3rd graders to master the critical literacy skills necessary for continued academic success, as measured by schools meeting or exceeding the 3rd grade Common Core standard. Middle Grade Math Elementary Education will enable students to master the critical math concepts necessary for college and career readiness, as measured by schools meeting or exceeding the 8th grade Common Core standard. College & Career Readiness High School Education will prepare students to enter and succeed in college and career programs as measured by school performance on the CA School Dashboard UC/CSU eligibility (i.e. C- or better in all “a-g” classes). College & Career Program Enrollment High School Education will ensure that students can continue their learning journey after they graduate, as measured by college or career program enrollment rates in National Student Clearinghouse. College & Career Program Completion Postsecondary Education will support students to complete their course of study ready for a bright and successful future, as measured by 6 year completion rates in the National Student Clearinghouse. Partners are public champions for each other and the collective work of the Partnership. Each Partner agency agrees to align with the Partnership’s vision for educational equity and its Cradle-to-Career framework. Partners work together through the Partnership’s Collaborative Improvement Process aimed at achieving equitable outcomes for all students. In addition to making a public commitment to racial equity , these leadership agencies are: sharing data, financially contributing to the health of the Partnership, and participating in the work of collaborative action initiatives and teams . Many Partners have also completed a Racial Equity Self-Assessment and have committed to take individual continuous improvement action to further Antiracism. Below is a list of Partners engaged in this Initiative: 10,000 Degrees Bridge the Gap College Prep Canal Alliance College of Marin Dominican University Huckleberry Youth Programs Karma Club Next Generation Scholars Novato Unified School District PBLWorks San Rafael City Schools Santa Rosa Junior College Shoreline Unified School District Tamalpais Union High School District What’s the Data Telling Us Below is a slide show of the team’s current set of shared data. This data is used at each monthly meeting as part of the collaborative improvement process facilitated by the Partnership’s Backbone staff. It is used to help the team assess, adjust, and/or amplify its collaborative action strategies. What strategies ARE the collaborative action teamS working on together? In addition to the individual programs operated by each Partner organization, the members of the Future Ready Team have identified the following collaborative action strategies. There are currently Success Network Teams serving over 900 students at the following High Schools: Tam, Tomales, Redwood, and San Rafael. Success Networks Increase early, collaborative, whole-child intervention support. Financial Aid Improve support infrastructure. College & Career Readiness Plans Increase and improve communication, awareness and understanding of future readiness requirements for students and families. LCAP/Blueprint Policy & Practice Shifts Increase collaborative support for common policy or practice shifts associated with Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP)/Blueprint action items such as: graduation requirements, standards based grading, project based learning, ethnic studies, multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS), and shared data systems. Postsecondary Bridging & Belonging Improving transition to post-secondary programs. Additional  information and related resourcs Why "Future Ready"? The term “Future Ready” best represents what Partners collectively believe is the team’s overarching goal: To prepare students, socially, emotionally and academically, for any bright future of their choosing while also ensuring that all postsecondary pathways are open to all students after graduation. Over the years, partners have identified the importance of how social, emotional, and academic factors impact future outcomes for students. Partners have identified that while they share a common goal of postsecondary attainment for all students, they recognize that each student’s postsecondary pathway might look different as they follow their own dreams. What happened to CRAT, CEAT, Enrollment Teams? In order to continue the work started last year weaving together the work of the Plan, Enrollment, KEDO, and Completion teams, we’re bringing everyone together as a Future Ready dream team. Starting September 23, 2021, we will begin having partners from these teams meet as a single group to better integrate all of the strategies that are working toward educational equity in college and career readiness, enrollment, and completion (while still using small groups to move the action forward). About the Canal The Canal is a vibrant neighborhood in San Rafael, home to a resilient Latino immigrant community that has shaped its culture and leadership. At the same time, families here face some of Marin’s starkest inequities. Challenges such as overcrowded housing, economic stress, and fear of deportations affect more than daily life. They follow children into the classroom and influence how they show up at school, making it harder to learn and thrive. Shifts in these areas would significantly strengthen the economic, social, and educational vitality of the neighborhood, making the biggest difference for children and families. Early Learning & Literacy Shared Goal : All children aged 0–5 will enter school ready to succeed and will be reading at grade level by 3rd grade. College & Career Readiness Shared Goal : All students will graduate high school well prepared for college, career, or job training, on a path to financial independence and a thriving future. What does the data tell us? How did we get here? The process of attaining a teaching credential involves significant financial and time commitments The high cost of living in Marin makes it challenging for teachers to afford housing on their salaries Negative school experiences can influence perceptions of teaching as a career Teachers of color may experience gaps in preparation or support that affect their ability to thrive in their roles Clear information about educator pathway options and careers in education is not readily available to students and families What are the Strategies? The initiative team has determined an Educator Pathway to be a promising strategy. The vision is an organized pathway that students, paraeducators, classified staff, and community members can enter and exit at different phases on their journey to becoming a teacher. This pathway includes a series of programs, support systems, and experiences designed to meet the needs and interests of BIPOC students. Educator Academy Increase experience and interest for high school students interested in careers in education by implementing Career Technical Education (CTE) through Educator Academies; dual enrollment programs that support high school 11th and 12th graders in exploring careers in education while earning college credits. “Cost Free” Undergraduate Pathway Make the undergraduate portion of the Educator Pathway “cost free” by identifying the current funding gap, securing additional funding sources and communicating the steps to receive funding clearly and effectively to students. Work Experience & Recruitment Ensure prospective educators on the pathway are hired in Marin by developing partnerships between school districts and postsecondary institutions, sharing recruiting practices and creating a database to help track students moving through the pathway. Teacher Residency Programs Ensure that prospective educators are supported in transition from the undergraduate portion of the Educator Pathway to employment through instituting programs that provide employment opportunities in school districts while students are pursuing their teaching credential, as well as mentorship, stipends, and priority access to recruitment for permanent positions. That’s the top-line finding of a working paper published this month by the National Bureau of Economic Research, in which researchers from Johns Hopkins and American University outline findings that show that black students who are exposed to one black teacher by third grade were 13 percent more likely to enroll in college. Itta has been named a recipient of a Marin Teacher of Color Scholarship, a scholarship program designed to address the shortage of teachers of color working in Marin County’s public schools funded by a $450,000 contribution in 2019 by anonymous donors. Population Focus Children 0-5 years old, not yet attending kindergarten in the Shoreline or Sausalito-Marin City School District attendance areas About the Equity Gap Many factors (barriers and opportunities) impact whether or not a student is ready to succeed in Kindergarten. Some of the primary factors identified by the team so far include: Rural locations like West Marin lack early childhood education (ECE) infrastructure. Readiness starts with infants and toddlers. These early years are greatly influenced by family engagement. Early childhood education workers, from homecare to preschool, are often some of the lowest paid educators. Gaps are created by both access to preschool (i.e. available space, cost) and the quality of all early learning environments (daycare, homecare, playgroups, etc.) Differences in access to health and wellness identification and intervention services (e.g. vision, hearing, etc.) can setback learning from the start. To get there, we have made a commitment to redesign our educational ecosystem so that race, ethnicity and poverty no longer determine opportunity or outcome. Unfortunately, 25,000 young people from infants to college graduates, more than 45% of all youth in Marin, are impacted by a system that was not designed with equity in mind. Because of this, about 60% of them are not yet meeting key Milestone outcomes. This is unacceptable and is why over 100 youth and family leaders, community organizations, funders, and public agencies - have come together as an integrated, Cradle-to-Career network to advance educational equity across Marin. Together, we are working to improve outcomes for all students while accelerating success for those most impacted by historical biases and structural racism. While some of our data comes from the same primary sources used by other dashboards, Partnership data is unique because it is … Timely & Actionable We pull in public data from the state as soon as it’s available. We also have access to unique, student-level, data sets through Partner data sharing agreements. Many other data sources or research reports rely on data that is often several years old. This might be good for retrospective research, but it’s not what teams need to take urgent action for today’s students. Focused on Marin We filter big data sets to keep our focus on Marin County, down to the individual school level. Many other data sources or research reports only show state-wide or county-wide information. Utilizing an analysis of local housing costs and TK-12 school district salary schedules, the report shows the degree to which housing is unaffordable for the majority of BIPOC, younger, and classified educators in the county. Additionally, the report presents data from a survey of 722 educators from Early Childhood Educators through higher education highlighting their current housing needs, the demand for affordable housing, and the impact affordable housing could have on recruitment and retention of educators. Para ello, han acordado un conjunto compartido de seis resultados clave. Si bien cada socio desempeña un papel único en el logro de estos hitos, juntos, con el apoyo del personal de Backbone, los socios se responsabilizan colectivamente de obtener resultados equitativos para todos los niños en cada etapa de su recorrido educativo. ¿Cómo se ve el éxito? The Board holds fiduciary responsibility for the long-term health of the Partnership and its educational equity mission. The Board’s key areas of responsibility include: Policy – Reviewing and establishing policies for the operation of the BSO as an organization Finance –Stewarding the BSO’s financial assets and approving the annual budget, which includes setting partnership fees if any Collaboration with the CEO — Supporting, retaining and advising the Chief Executive Officer. Current Board Members Chandra Alexandre CEO, Community Action Marin Community Leader/Early Childhood Education – Chandra Alexandre, the CEO of Community Action Marin, has over 20 years of experience supporting organizations to social justice outcomes. Her work has helped strengthen regional affordable housing and early childhood education initiatives, expand education reform strategies nationally, and resource grassroots-led movement building for global women’s rights. Chandra graduated from Columbia, has an MBA, and holds both Ph.D. and D.Min. degrees. She has taught fundraising and philanthropy at the University of San Francisco and is an official mentor for the United Nations Association of San Francisco. Chandra is also a founding board member of Marin Promise Partnership. Current Leadership Team Members Lana Adlawan Director of County Library Services, Marin County Free Library Lana Adlawan serves as the Director of the Marin County Free Library. She comes to the County of Marin with professional experience in various cities throughout the nation and many of those in the Bay Area. Over her career, she has served in progressively more responsible roles within the Brooklyn, Sacramento, Oakland, and Sonoma library systems. Most recently, Lana served as a Division Manager for the Sonoma County Library, overseeing nine library branches. Adlawan has a Bachelor of Arts in Community Services from UC Santa Cruz and Master of Science in Library and Information Services from the Pratt Institute. Her personal and professional background has driven her clear passion for community, innovation and equity. Adlawan was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and says her push for an equitable approach comes from her growing up in such a diverse place. Patty previously worked for Asian Communities for Reproductive Justice (now Forward Together), New Jersey Coalition Against Sexual Assault, and as a English Language Learner Teacher across K-12 schools in Vermont. They hold an M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from the School for International Training and a B.A. in Women’s and Gender Studies from Rutgers University. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Community Studies from U.C. Santa Cruz and a Master’s Degree in Social Work from USC. Kari also holds a Master’s Degree in Jewish Communal Services from Hebrew Union College. Kari became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and started her career in social services working at a Bay Area non-profit that serves developmentally disabled adults and children.
