Through a curriculum rich in languages, science, math, and the arts, we teach students to think critically, guide them in building strong social bonds and an ethical worldview, and prepare them with the skills, knowledge, and imagination they need to excel in high school and beyond. Whether they are whittling in the woodshop, trekking to the top of a snowy mountain peak, or puzzling over a word problem in math class, Marin Waldorf School students are encouraged to meet life's challenges with curiosity and courage. Strong in STEM In our middle school classrooms, science instruction begins with observation, using what is known as a phenomenological approach . In a phenomenological approach, students aren’t introduced to scientific principles through lectures and reading. Instead, a lesson begins with experimentation, observation, and hypothesis—teaching students to think like scientists do. Learn more about our approach to science instruction. Stewardship of the Earth Outdoor and Environmental Education are an integral aspect of middle school program. Environmental Education is focused on stewardship of our beautiful 10-acre campus and developing an understanding of the environmental impacts of our water, waste, and recycling systems. Students take a series of memorable class trips to locations around California, as well as a capstone trip in the 8th grade year. Read about a recent 7th grade trip to the Shasta Wilderness. Extraordinary Teaching At the heart of the middle school program is our dedicated middle school faculty, who bring experience, depth, and genuine care to their teaching. Together, we are committed to providing a curriculum that challenges the intellect, nurtures the emotional life, and supports the development of capable, creative, and socially conscious individuals. Our goal is to help these students meet this ever-shifting world with confidence, adaptability, and a strong sense of inner purpose. A Human Approach to Tech Technology and Digital Literacy are thoughtfully incorporated into the middle school curriculum. In addition to developing keyboarding proficiency, students receive explicit instruction in online research skills for use in research projects in 7th and 8th grades. Lessons emphasize critical evaluation of sources and appropriate use of technology in academic work. Learn more about our school’s thoughtful and age-appropriate approach to technology.   “ These relationships will last forever if you nurture them. You will make friends in high school, college, and beyond, but your MWS classmates will forever be sacred, their loyalty and love for you will always there. Led by a highly experienced administration and our dedicated faculty, our vibrant, experiential, and interdisciplinary curriculum blends math, sciences, art, music, performance, healthy movement, language arts, a dual world language program, and outdoor education. Located on a beautiful 10-acre campus on ancestral Miwok land in Lucas Valley, we are the only accredited Waldorf school in Marin County, currently enrolling 180 students, preschool to 8th grade. Our History In the fall of 1972, three young mothers—Sharon Rosen, Lesley Rosenberg, and Norma Davidson—opened the Marin Children's School in the Davidson family home in Fairfax, California, with just a kindergarten and first grade class. From this small seed, our school took shape. Quickly growing in size, the school relocated to Mill Valley, and then a campus on North San Pedro Road in San Rafael, where it was located for four years. We moved to our current site in 1983. In the spring of 2023, we celebrated 50 years since our school’s founding at Deer Park Villa in Fairfax. Many things have changed since 1973, but our school's purpose remains the same: to educate the next generation of children to learn, connect with each other, and make a positive contribution to the world.     Governance Welcome from our Director For more than 50 years, Marin Waldorf School has been dedicated to educating the next generation of children to become thoughtful, compassionate, and curious adults. From gardening to handwork to world languages, our rich curriculum places extraordinary value on purposeful work and hands-on projects, inspiring children to build, to create, and to express themselves artistically. You’ll find a culture of care and kindness across our school community, from the genuine bond between 8th graders and their 1st grade buddies to the joyous chatter of families meeting up at our monthly Community Coffees to the familiar smiles of young alumni who return to visit our campus during festivals and special events. Marin Waldorf School is a place where not only the children but the adults and faculty experience kindness and belonging. It is my deepest joy to be a part of this extraordinary community of teachers, staff, students, and families. Please take a moment to get to know us. Sincerely, Megan Neale Diversity Statement: AWSNA and Marin Waldorf School are committed to a policy of nondiscrimination and equal opportunity without regard to race, color, religious creed, ancestry, age, gender, marital status, national origin, disability or handicap, protected genetic information, veteran status, sexual orientation or any other factor protected by law. Our Governance Structure Marin Waldorf School is a 501(c)3 non-profit preschool through 8th grade independent school, run collaboratively by three interrelated bodies: the School Director, the Board of Trustees, and the College of Teachers. These three governing entities work collaboratively to support our unique and comprehensive Waldorf education. The School Director The School Director is responsible for directing and managing all pedagogical, curriculum, and teaching operations at Marin Waldorf School. The School Director is the chief business officer for the school, responsible for directing and managing all legal, administrative, financial and facilities operations and school-wide communications. The Board of Trustees The Board of Trustees is the legal governing body of the school. It focuses on developing policies and providing oversight to assure the school’s effective performance in three primary areas: legal, financial stewardship, and personnel and human resources. The Board has up to 14 members, which include current parents, teachers, and former parents or outside community members who have demonstrated an understanding of and commitment to the aims of Waldorf education. Board meetings are held monthly during the school year. Anyone in our school community is welcome to attend meetings to observe the proceedings. The College of Teachers The College of Teachers is a group of current faculty who hold the vision of Marin Waldorf School. The College of Teachers is responsible for strengthening the spiritual, pedagogical, and cultural life of the school, and for supporting the faculty’s decision-making process through thoughtful discussion of issues important to Marin Waldorf’s health and growth.   Return to Top School Overview Governance   Marin Waldorf School | Preschool-Grade 8 755 Idylberry Rd San Rafael, CA 94903 [email protected] ( 415) 479-8190   School Overview Grandmother Oak Blog Admissions Inquire Support Us Careers School Calendar Marin Waldorf School 755 Idylberry Road, San Rafael, CA, 94903, United States 415-479-8190 [email protected]     Contact The Marin Waldorf School Nondiscrimination Policy + The Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA) and Marin Waldorf School are committed to a policy of nondiscrimination and equal opportunity without regard to race, color, religious creed, ancestry, age, gender, marital status, national origin, disability or handicap, protected genetic information, veteran status, sexual orientation or any other factor protected by law. It develops with the slow emergence of identity, and the gradual accumulation of life experiences. — Kim John Payne, Simplicity Parenting     "Now is the time for leaders, across sectors, to develop new ways for students to learn that are more directly, and more dynamically, tied to where our economy is going, not where it has been. Critically, that involves bringing the same level of rigor to training around people skills that we have brought to technical skills ," write authors Aneesh Raman and Maria Flynn in a 2024 op-ed New York Times, discussing the importance of developing deep human capacities in the age of artificial intelligence. From Davos to Silicon Valley, thought leaders expect human skills to become increasingly coveted as AI and other technologies change the role of human beings in the job market. But the benefits of learning emotional intelligence goes beyond future job prospects. Research shows that programs that teach social and emotional skills can have a direct positive impact on academic performance, relationships, and confidence in students over the long term. In a time Most important, building deep and meaningful relationships are the foundation of a satisfying and meaningful life. At Marin Waldorf School, building a healthy social environment and emotional intelligence in our students is fundamental to our work—and you can see it. Our students are eager learners, resilient in the face of challenges, and confident interacting with each other and their teachers. How do we teach these skills? How Do We Teach Emotional Intelligence? Social-emotional skills are embedded into every aspect of the curriculum—and it shows in our warm and close-knit school community. Strong Class Culture Close teacher-student relationships and intentionally small class sizes bolster our students' self-confidence and sense of belonging within the MWS community. Here, students benefit from working with the same team of teachers over multiple years, creating an environment in which each student is individually seen and supported. (Click here to read more about how we build strong teacher-student relationships through a practice called looping .) Importantly, our teachers model compassion and kindness, and ask our students to do the same. We also promote open conversations between parents and teachers, building a trusting relationship with the child’s needs at the center. Sign up here to visit our beautiful Lucas Valley campus during a school day to see our classrooms in action. Collaborative Learning Starting in preschool and kindergarten, Marin Waldorf School emphasizes cooperation and collaboration in the classroom, with ample time for both guided group work and unstructured play. In the grades, we place tremendous value on activities that encourage students to work together , whether that’s building a motor with a partner in 8th grade physics class Music and Ensembles When it comes to group activities, music, in particular, encourages students to cooperate and listen to each other—one of the many reasons that both choir and instrumental music are such a big part of our curriculum. Students in grades 1-8 also collaborate every year while rehearsing and performing their annual class play. A Close-Knit School Community In our close-knit school community, children get to know each other across ages and grade levels. Both preschool and kindergarten classrooms are mixed-age, laying the groundwork for the cooperative community feel in grades 1-8. Our 1st grade-8th grade buddy program unites our oldest and youngest graders, while students in grades 1-8 get an opportunity to play together during recess, twice daily. Frequent all-school assemblies and festivals, from the Michaelmas pageant to the annual Lunar New Year assembly, bring the entire school community together. Importantly, we want families to be involved in their children’s lives and education. A Thoughtful Approach to Technology At Marin Waldorf School, our rich interdisciplinary education emphasizes hands-on experiences, human relationships, and creativity. We don’t use tech in the classroom, unless it is required for assisted learning. A Real-World, Hands-on Approach Our curriculum and pedagogy are based on the understanding that, as best-selling author Jonathan Haidt writes in his new book The Anxious Generation , “Experience, not information, is the key to emotional development.” In place of tablets and technology, children are encouraged to build social skills through group work and free play; to develop their imagination and creativity through the arts, music, and stories; and to boost their bodies and brains with experiential activities, from games to knitting to woodwork. A Program in Social Ethics for Middle Schoolers Research shows that programs that explicitly teach social-emotional skills can have a lifelong positive impact on learning, social skills, and confidence in children. Starting in middle school, students at MWS participate in an articulated program in social ethics and social emotional learning, which includes topics like technology and its responsible uses, anti-bias education, sexual ethics, and health. These discussion-based classes are an opportunity for students to share their thoughts and questions in a supportive adult-guided environment. Would you like to see our dynamic and social classrooms for yourself? Sign up for a campus tour with our admissions director here . Why Do We Teach Social-Emotional Skills? In recent years, social emotional learning, or SEL, has become an increasing focus in elementary and middle school education. Research has repeatedly shown that there are many benefits to teaching social-emotional skills in school, including the following. Improved Learning Outcomes Teaching SEL is linked to improved academic achievement in students—over the long term. Studies have shown that students who participated in SEL programs saw an 11 percentile increase in their overall grades and better attendance. A Sense of Belonging and Improved Mental Health Researchers show that social and emotional skills reduce anxiety and enhance emotional regulation, resilience, and confidence. Positive School Culture Emphasizing social-emotional skills creates more inclusive and supportive classrooms , decreasing conflicts and bullying, and promoting a sense of belonging among students. Skills for an Unknown Future Not only is SEL linked to improved student performance and overall well being in school, it promotes the uniquely human capacities—like communication, collaboration, and empathy—that are expected to become increasingly critical in the future. Connection With Nature Time outdoors teaches children about the Earth’s natural rhythms and cycles, allows them to experience natural phenomena before studying them in a classroom, and fortifies the child’s relationship with and respect for the natural world. Play-Based Learning In Waldorf early childhood education, play is at the center of the day’s activities—and for good reason. For young children, play isn’t just enjoyable, it is essential to their growth , naturally stimulating a child’s neural pathways, and encouraging healthy cognitive and brain development. A Thoughtful Approach to Tech Starting in early childhood, we prioritize building academic, social, and emotional capacities in our students, slowly and intentionally introducing media and technology so that it can be used as a resource and a tool.   Preschool Our preschool is designed with the young child in mind, with cozy classrooms that feel like home and a gentle rhythm that creates a sense of order and security for preschoolers. At this age, children learn best through play, and our teachers encourage the children's explorations into the world with stories, songs, beautiful handmade toys, and seasonal craft projects. Through this play-based learning time, our teachers encourage social development, problem-solving skills and language development. Preschoolers spend a large part of their day outdoors, rain or shine, in our beautiful preschool play yard and redwood grove. Grounded in Waldorf philosophy and set in our cozy Manzanita playroom, our infant and toddler classes offer a warm place of support, connection and play. We can’t wait to meet you and your little one! Baby & Me Find your village of support and enjoy the early months of parenthood. Our expertly guided baby and me program is built around the idea that effective, empathetic parenting stems from a well-nurtured caregiver, and from developing deep, meaningful connections within families. Each session will blend practical learning to observe and understand your baby, seasonal songs and games to play and build connection, and mindfulness techniques to help parents and caregivers to reconnect with their inner selves and replenish their emotional reserves. Intended for new (and experienced) parents with children 0-14 months (please see our Parent-Toddler Program for children ages 15 months and up). Ages: Open to families with infants 0-14 months old. For families with children ages 15 months and up, please see our Parent-Toddler Program . Date & Time: Baby & Me classes meet Thursday mornings, from 11:00am to 12:15pm. Registration: Registration for the Winter 2026 and Spring 2026 sessions are open. About the Class Explore themes related to the growth, development, and parenting of the infant with mother and Waldorf teacher Rhian Dale! Babies lie on a soft blanket where they watch what interests them or move around to reach the objects in the room. Special attention is given to supporting the natural unfolding of children’s interests, movement abilities, social interactions, and problem-solving skills. A nurturing atmosphere welcomes and surrounds adults and babies alike. We will learn seasonal songs, lullabies, and games to play with babies. Parents also develop their ability to quietly observe and interpret babies’ movements, gestures, and vocalizations. Through quiet observation, parents deepen their own intuitive knowledge and discover new ways of being with their children. Weekly readings are explored in a spirit of mutual learning, and classes based on Waldorf, early childhood education, also include opportunities for informative conversation. Find your village in Baby & Me Baby & Me classes meet on Thursday mornings, from 11:00am to 12:15pm. A distinction of Waldorf teachers is their passion for individuality and commitment to nurturing individual student’s mind. With a heavy focus on the importance of hands-on experience for their students, rather than standardized testing, Waldorf teachers help their students to explore curricula through diverse activities, with plenty of room to customize lesson plans. The fluidity of this approach provides extensive engagement that leads to lifelong connections with the material taught, the teachers involved and the bigger questions at the heart of each subject.   EARLY CHILDHOOD Fernanda Fuga, Lead Teacher, Buttercup Preschool Fernanda Fuga discovered Waldorf education in 2009 when looking for a preschool for her children; today, they are both graduates of Marin Waldorf School and current students at San Francisco Waldorf High School. In 2013, while completing her training at the Bay Area Center for Waldorf Teacher Training, Fernanda began working in the Marin Waldorf School preschool and kindergarten classrooms as a substitute teacher. She then took the full-time assistant teacher position in the Buttercup class for three years before becoming the Buttercup lead teacher in 2021. Fernanda grew up in São Paulo, Brazil where she earned a degree in Business and Languages at Faculdade de Tecnologia de Sao Paulo. She is fluent in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, and also speaks some French. She enjoys crafting, trail running, and going to the beach with her family. She has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and education from UC Davis, and she completed the Lifeways Training in Curative Education with Robyn Brown. She served on the Board of Trustees at the Bay Area Center for Waldorf Teacher Training for three years and is an active member and former chair of our school’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice, and Belonging Committee. She found Marin Waldorf School through a parenting course with master teacher Karen Rivers while her son was in preschool. Lisa was born in San Francisco and grew up in Marin County, and she loves singing, music, hiking, nature, dance, swimming, and spending time with family. Kimi Keating, Lead Teacher, Hollyhock Kindergarten Kimi Keating began her career in education as an assistant teacher in first, third, and sixth grade classrooms in Mill Valley public schools. Her lifelong love of the arts and humanities brought her to Waldorf education, and she completed her three-year teacher training program through Rudolf Steiner College. After graduating from RSC in 1999, she apprenticed for two years at the San Francisco Waldorf School before taking a lead teaching position at Songbird's Nest in Forest Knolls. From the next 19 years, she was a lead teacher for a mixed-age preschool-kindergarten class at Marin Mountain School in Corte Madera. She taught with Earthwise Education’s Forest Friends outdoor program at the Lake Lagunitas Watershed, then joined Marin Waldorf School’s staff in 2022 as a lead teacher in the Hollyhock classroom. Kimi holds a bachelor’s degree in art history from San Francisco State University. Sarah Whitmore, Lead Teacher, Morning Glory Kindergarten Sarah Whitmore is a seasoned Waldorf educator with more than 25 years of teaching experience. She began her teaching journey at Árbol de la Vida in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and completed the four-year teacher training program at Rudolf Steiner College. During her time at Marin Waldorf School, she also served as College Chair and helped shape faculty initiatives focused on nurturing a culture of belonging, human dignity and mutual respect. In 2021, Sarah and her husband spent two years at Portland Waldorf School before returning to Marin Waldorf School, where she served as Grades Director in 2023–2024. Sarah has a deep love for storytelling and the arts, and delights in bringing language, imagination, and cultural traditions to life for children. All it takes is a set of wood blocks, a tree to climb, or a couple of friends. When given the opportunity, young children are naturally drawn into immersive, imaginative, and creative play. At Marin Waldorf School, imaginative play is at the center of the day’s activities —and for good reason. There is a wide breadth of research that shows unstructured play is essential to cognitive, physical, emotional, and social development in young children. The American Academy of Pediatrics released a clinical report in 2012 outlining the fundamental importance of play. “Play offers more than cherished memories of growing up, it allows children to develop creativity and imagination while developing physical, cognitive, and emotional strengths,” the AAP wrote. Childhood play is even linked to a longer life expectancy ! Play Encourages Cognitive and Brain Development Play naturally stimulates a child’s neural pathways, encouraging healthy cognitive and brain development. Specifically, researchers have found that free, unstructured play builds connections in the prefrontal cortex, the brain’s executive control center. "The experience of play changes the connections of the neurons at the front end of your brain," says Sergio Pellis , a researcher at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada. "And without play experience, those neurons aren't changed," he says. Play Builds Social Skills and Self-Control Open House October 18, 10am-12pm Meet our wonderful preschool and kindergarten teachers, visit classrooms and playgrounds, and chat with current families at our annual Open House. This is an all-ages, family-friend event! Sign up here . From rocking on a seesaw to setting up a tea party, play is how children learn to interact with one another, building essential skills in cooperation, conflict resolution, self-regulation, and communication . Crucially, these skills continue to serve the child for years into the future, with research showing that children who engage in unstructured play in the toddler and preschool years had better self-regulation abilities at ages 4–5 and 6–7 years. Play Supports Physical Health Skipping, jumping, swinging, grasping, stacking, balancing! Play helps young children develop both fine and gross motor skills while exploring their own interests and imagination. Play is also a natural opportunity to promote movement and physical expression in children—which has benefits for body, heart, and mind! In May 2025, an article published by UNICEF shared, “Children are also more likely to take risks when they are playing outdoors – think climbing trees, or jumping from a height. A growing body of research has found that this kind of risk-taking outdoors not only helps children get the physical activity that they need to be healthy and strong, but promotes children's resilience, creativity and their social skills.” Play Develops Problem-Solving Skills They also learn to develop important problem-solving skills, by thinking up solutions to their own problems, like how to stack a pile of boxes and sticks to build a fort. In an article in the journal Pediatrics , the authors explain, “When play is allowed to be child driven, children practice decision-making skills, move at their own pace, discover their own areas of interest, and ultimately engage fully in the passions they wish to pursue.” Play Supports Language Skills & Literacy There is ample evidence that children’s literacy and communication skills are developed during play. In fact, research indicates that children use their most advanced language skills while playing, which in turn supports literacy skills taught in the classroom. “When children play and communicate through play, they are learning how language works and gaining an understanding of how to interact with other people. Eventually, children connect the meaning of spoken language to written language, which is the key to success in school,” says a study published in the Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education .   Get to Know Marin Waldorf School Give your child the gift of play! Grades 1-4 is a time for children to understand the relationship between themselves and the world around them. Providing space and encouragement through this developmental stage enables the child to become stable, balanced and self-sufficient. Marin Waldorf School honors a wide diversity of learning profiles. As an educational community, we value the individuality of  each child and  work to support each students’ intellectual, social, emotional, and physical needs. Assessments Every year, new students, as well as those in 2nd and 5th grades, undergo a multi-subject skills assessment to confirm that their learning is progressing as expected. Students in other grades are screened annually if they have previously received assistance or exhibit signs of needing extra support. All grades students also receive periodic skills checks in literacy and math. With over a decade of experience supporting children with diverse learning profiles, our Educational Support Director, Greer Lanzet-Ourian—known to our students and families as Ms. GLO—brings a fresh perspective and learning expertise to Marin Waldorf School. She is a Certified Dyslexia Practitioner, specializing in structured literacy and multisensory math. Her background includes participation in several neuroscience studies at the UCSF Dyslexia Center, coaching educators at Charles Armstrong School, and teaching in inclusive classrooms in Brooklyn, New York. Ms. GLO combines her research-based instructional strategies with the Waldorf approach that engages the head, heart, and hands. Differentiated Instruction For both accelerated learners and students who need extra support, there are systems in place to tailor the learning experience to best meet their needs. In some cases, there are students receiving the same content as their peers, but with a different style of instruction or expected quantity of output. THE ART OF MOTHERING with Sarah Whitmore, Seasoned Lead Teacher, Morning Glory Kindergarten DESCRIPTION: The Art of Mothering group offers a warm space for conversation and community around the inner life of parenting.  Together we will form a circle to cultivate self-care and explore the practical and whimsical arts of mothering. We will spark and draw out our parenting wisdom, nurture our sense of humor and kindle a sense of care for one another.  We will remember that raising children was never meant to be done alone. My hope is that our time together strengthens those who carry out the unceasing task of parenting. Evenings may include exploration, sharing and reflection on parenting themes, and occasional simple artistic activities. Above all, the intention is to create a place where parents can pause, connect, and leave feeling a little more supported on the beautiful, imperfect and demanding path of raising children in our time. DATES/TIMES/LOCATION: Tuesday, April 21, 6:30pm-8:30pm Tuesday, May 26, 6:30pm-8:30pm Morning Glory Classroom COST : Event Fee (for 2 evenings): $65 (If cost is a barrier, sliding scale is available. Please email [email protected]) ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Sarah Whitmore is a seasoned Waldorf educator with more than 25 years of teaching experience. She began her teaching journey at Árbol de la Vida in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and completed the four-year teacher training program at Rudolf Steiner College. She later led a bilingual kindergarten class at Summerfield Waldorf School for eleven years before joining Marin Waldorf School, where she served as a lead teacher in the early childhood program from 2017–2022. Her kindergarten and early childhood classes are Spanish-infused or bilingual, reflecting her love of Spanish language and latinx cultures. Past Events 2024-2025 The Proactive Power of Waldorf Education with Jack Petrash Monday, October 21, 6:30-8pm “ Reflecting on Jack Petrash’s inspiring speech, I found renewed conviction in the principles of Waldorf education. He emphasized the essential role of play in fostering creativity and resilience, using examples from influential figures like Einstein and Fleming. Jack articulated the Waldorf approach, which harmonizes logical and intuitive thinking, highlighting hands-on activities like farming and house building as vital components of a holistic curriculum that nurtures the whole child. He encouraged us to teach through imagination, art, and storytelling, engaging children’s emotions and fostering transformative thinking. By designing a curriculum that mirrors each child’s inner development, we can provide experiences that support their growth. Ultimately, Jack reminded us of the importance of helping children understand their humanity, empowering them to realize their potential in a world that often feels isolating. -Robert, Current MWS Parent ” Join veteran educator Jack Petrash for an engaging discussion aimed at parents, educators, and community members interested in child development. He will explore Waldorf education principles and share insights on nurturing authentic creative intelligence in children, preparing them for future societal roles in a changing world. Jack Petrash is a former class teacher at the Washington Waldorf School, where he taught from grades one to eight four times. He co-founded the Nova Institute to connect mainstream education with Waldorf Education and authored books including "Understanding Waldorf Education" and "Turning Lead into Gold." His TEDx talk, "Preparing Children for the Journey," has reached many in Waldorf communities. Petrash has also focused on parent education, especially for fathers, with writings in the Washington Post and on NPR, along with books like "Covering Home" and "Navigating the Terrain of Childhood." Parent and Caregivers Workshop with Daniella Baker Join us every third Tuesday of the month This holistic year-long workshop recognizes that effective, empathetic parenting stems from a well-nurtured caregiver. Through anthroposophical exercises, mindfulness techniques, and practical self-care strategies, including journaling, artistic expression, discussion, and humor, the workshop aims to help parents and caregivers: Reconnect with their inner selves & replenish their emotional reserves Model emotional resilience Create a home environment that nurtures emotional and spiritual growth Foster secure attachments & deepen their connection with their children Build connection and community with other parents and caregivers We will meet every third Tuesday of the month (9 sessions total), from 7pm to 8:30pm.  Our first meeting will be Tuesday, October 1. Fathers’ Group with Roland Baril Meeting approximately every third Monday throughout the school year Roland Baril, MWS’s 5th grade class teacher, is launching a continuing group of up to 20 fathers, meeting approximately every third Monday evening. The Fathers’ Group sessions will: Provide a forum to deepen our understanding of effective parenting skills and our roles as fathers. Offer tools for being a conscious father, through understanding of developmental phases. Strengthen connection within the school community by establishing and deepening friendships. Increase understanding of Waldorf movement activities to strengthen a father’s connection to his child’s education, and to simply enjoy the fun of playing together.  Many meetings will open with an athletic game of Spaceball, so bring your sneakers! These group sessions are dynamic, informative meetings that encourage sharing of experiences, as we work together to strengthen parenting skills. Date/Time: 9/30, 10/21, 11/18, 12/9, 1/13, 2/3, 2/24, 3/24, 4/21, 5/12 (approximately every third Monday), 6:30-8:30 p.m. I can’t stress how helpful this group has been to strengthen my understanding and commitment to our MWS community. It’s given me deep personal enlightenment into Waldorf education and what differentiates Marin Waldorf from the rest of the educational paths in the Bay Area: its exceptional and experienced staff and supporters. I now have more emotional buy-in to the school and my child’s education, their childhood and my own Fatherhood, than before joining the group. —Michael Resnick, parent About Roland Baril:  Roland has led a Fathers’ Group at Marin Waldorf for four years, at Summerfield Waldorf School in Santa Rosa for four years, and at Greenwood School in Mill Valley for eight years. Foundational Skills Through a multidisciplinary, multilayered approach to math and language, starting at the earliest ages, children at Marin Waldorf School build essential skills during preschool and kindergarten. Learn more about how we teach math from preschool to 8th grade. This inspires curiosity in the natural world, reduces anxiety helps improve cognition. Then they gather to share a fresh organic snack, prepared in the classroom every morning (read more about the importance of snack time in our daily rhythm here ). Our low-tech approach to school and home life encourages imagination and wonder. We offer a 3-day (Monday - Wednesday) and a 5-day preschool program and extended care until either 3:00 or 5:20pm.   What does a preschool day at Marin Waldorf look like? 8:30am - Welcome, doors open 8:30 - 9:00 - Artistic activity, story time, imaginative play 9:00 - 10:20 - Tidy up / circle time 10:20 - 10:45 - Morning snack (provided by school) 10:45 - 12:10 - Outside playtime 12:10 - 12:45 - Lunch 12:45 - Dismissal, aftercare begins 1:15 - 2:20 Quiet time / nap 2:20 - 3:00 - Outdoor playtime, snack 3:00 - Early aftercare pickup 3:00 - Late aftercare begins 5:20 - Late aftercare pickup   Sample snack schedule All snacks are made daily in the classroom by teachers using high quality, organic ingredients. Inviting and homelike classrooms and a beautiful outdoor play yard create a nurturing backdrop to structured activities and free play. In kindergarten, we are practicing academics implicitly, learning numbers and language through story-telling and daily activities. This lays the foundation for the academic program in the grades and prepares children for the explicit decoding of letters and numbers that happens in first grade. Highlights of kindergarten activities include watercolor painting and handcrafts, gardening, cooking and baking, singing and puppet shows, healthy movement and physical activity, a fresh organic snack provided daily and weekly hikes in Lucas Valley (with parents encouraged to join whenever possible!). We want children at Marin Waldorf School to be who they are, and we are striving to build a more beautiful world in which every child feels safe and valued. Marin Waldorf School is committed to educating children within an equitable, inspiring, and inclusive school community.  About our DEIJB Committee Since 2018, the school’s active Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice, and Belonging (DEIJB) Committee has led our community in self-examination and study through parent and faculty education events, in addition  helped promote equity and anti-bias work within our curriculum and in our physical spaces. In cooperation with school leadership, the committee contributed to the establishment of two scholarship programs designed to promote inclusion at Marin Waldorf School (please read more about our scholarship programs below).  Through the work of our DEIJB Committee, our faculty and staff have taken up the individual and collective work of examining our school, ourselves, and our curriculum with an equity lens. Through education, collaboration, and self-reflection, we are finding new ways to incorporate anti-racist and anti-bias teaching into the Waldorf curriculum and our school community. RECENT EVENTS Recent Events: The Rainbow Parade In early June, Marin Waldorf School students celebrated LGBTQ+ Pride Month with an all-school rainbow parade. Grades students dressed in the colors of the rainbow to create a living representation of the LGBT rainbow flag . Leading up to Rainbow Day, grades teachers have been introducing the event to their students in age-appropriate ways, from discussing the beauty of a rainbow or sharing a short story with students in the lower grades to discussing the generations of activists, politicians and citizens who fight for their rights and safety with older students. In planning this event, we took inspiration from the San Francisco Unified School District , which has been on the forefront of LGBTQ+ activism for years. LGBTQ-inclusive education is mandated in San Francisco and public schools hold annual Pride celebrations on campus. These programs likely contribute to the fact that LGBTQ+ youth in San Francisco experience lower rates of depression and mental health disorders than LGBTQ+ youth nationally. Recent Events: Middle School Assembly with Disability Rights Activist Meg Weber In March, our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students had the opportunity to listen to and spend time with Portland, Oregon–based Waldorf teacher and disability advocate Meg Weber ( @disabilityadvocatepdx ), who led an hour-and-a-half disability awareness assembly for our middle school. Later, Meg joined our faculty meeting to talk about what it means to be disabled, what it means to make a space accessible, how to be an ally, and much more. What a gift for us all! Find out more about her work at www.disabilityadvocatepdx.com  Recent Events: DEIJB for Waldorf Parents with Karmin Guzder Parents and faculty (including every single member of our early childhood teaching team!) attended  an evening presentation by Waldorf teacher and DEIJB consultant Karmin Guzder Williams. Designed specifically for Waldorf families, Karmin’s presentation focused on how the MWS community can help children bring empathy, clear thinking, and strong will to contemporary times. She examined the history of Waldorf education, the history and current climate in Marin County, and how we, as parents, can promote the values of inclusion and equity at home. “To raise an antiracist child, you must first teach them about their own culture and history. Then, you must teach them about other cultures and histories. And finally, you must teach them about the common humanity that connects all of these different cultures,” writes Ibram X. Kendi in How to Raise an Antiracist, a quote that Karmin highlighted as part of her talk. For those who were unable to make it or who would like to review the presentation again, Karmin has generously shared her slide deck with us . You may access it here . The summer of 2020 is several years behind us, but the need for social change remains urgent. In early 2023, we have witnessed a tragic spate of violence and injustice across our country, and right here in the Bay Area. As our faculty dives more deeply into the important work of creating an anti-racist and inclusive curriculum, we are exploring deeper and richer ways to discuss history, activism, and social justice. How do we inspire them—and assess their progress?  It’s morning in the 4th grade classroom at Marin Waldorf School and students are silently writing in their lesson books. The class teacher walks slowly between aisles of desks, checking work and occasionally leaning in to quietly share a comment. It is a familiar classroom scene—one that, on first glance, looks similar to a class of students diligently completing a quiz or writing graded essays. But 4th graders at Marin Waldorf School don’t take tests or quizzes. They don’t receive letter grades or traditional report cards. And they are encouraged to cooperate, not compete, in the classroom. How do our students become invested and diligent learners without grading? How do teachers measure and assess students progress without the standard toolkit of grades, tests, and quizzes? And how do parents know that their child is progressing academically?  Our Focus Is On Learning—Not Grades “Grades create a preference for the easiest possible task. Impress on students that what they're doing will count toward their grade, and they will likely avoid taking unnecessary intellectual risks,” writes author and social scientist Alfie Kohn in the essay The Case Against Grading . According to Kohn, “Extrinsic motivation, which includes a desire to get better grades, often undermines intrinsic motivation, a desire to learn for its own sake.” Marin Waldorf School classrooms provide daily proof that children are more likely to learn at the highest level when they are motivated by curiosity, close teacher-student relationships , and multisensory activities —like art and movement—that make learning enjoyable. Without grades, learning is unlimited, allowing exceptional students to reach their fullest potential. At the same time, students are supported through challenges in a school that emphasizes skill building, learning, and cooperation over competition and achievement. “There’s this extrinsic motivation that’s tied to grades, which adds to student stress, and in some cases can lead to really unhealthy practices like perfectionism or great anxiety, paralysis. And it could also really turn kids off,” says Denise Pope, Ed.M.’89, a senior lectur
