From blog posts and emails to campaign messaging and impact stories, content helps your organization present a consistent and meaningful presence across all channels. Nonprofit content marketing is most effective when guided by a clear strategy. Rather than creating content in isolation, a thoughtful approach ensures everything you publish serves a purpose. Our Approach to Content Strategy for Nonprofits Effective nonprofit content marketing starts with clarity and intention. From there, we create a clear content strategy for nonprofits that outlines what to say, how to say it, and where it should live. In 2020, Media Cause joined their Chronic Homelessness Initiative as their strategic and creative partner for the All In Campaign to mobilize San Franciscans around solutions to homelessness. Client Issue Area Community Development The Outcome Through our integrated campaign, ranging from content strategy and creation to paid media management and advocacy activation, we reached over 5.5M people, helping to increase awareness, education, compassion, and action about solutions to homelessness in San Francisco. 10K+ Pledge Signatures 5 Events <br> Four virtual webinars + one in-person storytelling event 5.5M People reached on social media The Challenge Tipping Point Community came to us with a tall order: help them create a strategy to raise awareness and build support about innovative and proven solutions to homelessness in a city deeply divided on the issue and how to approach it. The goal was not to solve homelessness as a whole but rather to get people to see the issue differently—and get them to act. We had a number of significant obstacles to overcome. It’s impossible to live in San Francisco and not be aware of homelessness, but residents have developed some apathy and skepticism about what might actually be done to make sure everyone who lives in the City also has a home. We had to confront deeply entrenched public perceptions—unhoused neighbors were being defined by their lack of a permanent home, with many believing that they brought their misfortune upon themselves and that there is nothing the City can really do about it. These narratives were further enforced by a lack of transparency and publicly available data around which solutions were actually successful and having a real impact. All of this, plus a complex and ever-changing political ecosystem, culminated in a massive barrier to changing the hearts and minds of San Franciscans and building real, public support for proven solutions to homelessness. The Strategy We forged a path forward in this difficult and complex landscape through a powerful counter-narrative that cast a vision and outlined a collective and people-centered response to a systemic issue. At the same time, we highlighted what was already working and provided meaningful actions for people to be a part of the tangible progress underway. We accomplished this through a cross-channel campaign strategy that centered around elevating the voices of people with lived experience of homelessness, developing and targeting audience personas based on different levels of engagement with the issue, and building relationships on and offline. This resulted in a strong and growing community, united by their support for solutions to homelessness, inspired by the progress in creating real change, and ultimately driven by real concern for their neighbors, including those currently living unhoused. Human-Centered Storytelling The Implementation It was clear from the onset of the campaign that we faced an uphill battle in changing the hearts and minds of San Franciscans. The contentious debate around homelessness locally made it particularly difficult to break the issue down in a way that did not immediately turn off potential supporters or paint a picture so bleak that it discouraged people from taking action. We were intentional about leading with stories that reframed homelessness as a community issue rather than one rooted in individual failures while also sharing positive, uplifting news that created a sense of hope around what was possible. Our event, ‘What Does Home Mean To You?’ brought community members together to listen to the stories of people who have lived unhoused in San Francisco—placing our constituency as agents of change and consciousness-raisers in the campaign. Building a Messaging Framework From the beginning of our work with Tipping Point, we were cognizant we’d be speaking to a constituency with varied levels of knowledge about homelessness—but we also knew they’d have a strong sense of the reality since they encounter it every day. Our challenge was to put together a narrative change strategy that aimed to transform people into community members with a stake in seeing their neighbors housed. We created content series’ to educate San Franciscans on solutions to homelessness, including a Legislative Digest , Prop C 101 (a breakdown of a local pro position ), and multiple articles on solutions currently in place to create a space for jargon-free and easily accessible content on the topic. While Our Blog and Learning Center were the hub for this content, we broke it down further into digestible and shareable carousels on social media that people could then share with their networks. With paid media to support these content series, we infiltrated the local market, arming our supporters with the information they needed to take their support to the next level. Content + Creative Strategy The focal point of our campaign was the people we aimed to serve: Unhoused San Franciscans. We knew that to put a face to an often faceless issue, we had to tell real, human stories that wouldn’t just change peoples’ minds, but touch their hearts. We implemented a strategy that not only leaned into the stories of lived experience but specifically to the stories of people who are often left out of the narrative—like women of color or LGBTQ+ youth. We intentionally portrayed unhoused residents in the campaign imagery, centering around their humanity, highlighting their resilience, and maintaining their dignity. In our community series , we narrowed in on the different populations that experience homelessness, the unique challenges, and the community-specific solutions required. Developing Personas and Communication Tools We developed on-ramps for supporter involvement at varying levels of commitment throughout the campaign. We presented a unique “way in” by emphasizing different elements of the story: the problem, the people, and the possibilities. We crafted three distinct personas and three creative concepts for each piece of this larger narrative. These concepts connected homelessness to other issues, illustrating that there is no finite definition of ‘homeless’ and driving people to ask hard questions about homelessness and genuinely listen to the answers. This strategy culminated in the creation of The NeighborGood Guide , an evergreen, self-standing tool. The Guide uses storytelling to underscore points of human connection, amplify the voices of people who have experienced life unhoused, and lead users through their own unique journey in identifying their role in creating solutions to homelessness in San Francisco. The strategies proved to be effective in grabbing attention—we reached a staggering 5.5M people on social media, a 260% increase in audience. AKC’s “If It Barks” Campaign is a national initiative designed to help move the brand beyond their past “show dogs only” perception. While many people regarded the AKC as a trusted source, they regarded the organization as a trusted source for only show dogs with more of a stuffy attitude than what was representative of the brand. This campaign uses a mix of humor and education to position the organization as a trusted, accessible, expert resource for all dogs and their owners—regardless of breed or background. The goal of the “ If It Barks” campaign is twofold: build awareness for the AKC brand through targeted video campaigns and drive traffic to the AKC website . Client Issue Area Wildlife/Animal Welfare The Outcome By partnering with influencers, we helped drive awareness of AKC as a trusted source for dog information and increased engagement with the brand among a younger audience. 138,402 Video views on TikTok 14.8% Engagement rate (20,488 engagements) $0.73 Cost Per Engagement The Challenge The goal of the campaign was to grow awareness among a new audience. For AKC, this meant not only reaching a younger audience but also engaging with them. The “If It Barks” Campaign had also been around for a while, so there was some concern that our creative assets might be getting a bit stale. We didn’t have the budget for a creative overhaul but did want to be in the market with some new, fresh content. The Strategy Knowing AKC has low awareness among a younger audience, we set out to connect with Gen Zers. We aimed to meet the audience where they were already consuming media, with a focus on generating in-platform engagement with our campaign rather than trying to drive users to click through to the AKC site. To best resonate with this audience, and seeing as our campaign creative had been in the market a while, we wanted to lean away from our standard banner ads and video assets and instead establish partnerships with influencers who would create custom content in order to amplify our campaign. Social Media Channel Strategy The Implementation We sought channels where we could connect with Gen Zers. We identified TikTok as a fit to reach this audience. Seeing as AKC already had an increasing organic presence on the social platform, the timing was right to test paid efforts. Social Media Influencer Strategy We then identified influencers—in this case, dog accounts—to partner with. Each account featured a purebred dog, produced engaging, family-friendly content, were within budget, and—in most cases—were already AKC registered. Influencer Creative Brief Finally, we provided each influencer partner with a robust creative brief where we outlined the campaign goals and concept, various talking points (which differed for each partner) and some general AKC guidelines—such as no prong collars or retractable leashes. Despite the direction provided, we encouraged the creators to be authentic to themselves and their followers. Ready to drive growth and impact through digital strategies? OUR WORK WE'RE HIRING READ THE BLOG Our Story Media Cause was founded with a simple vision— to create a positive impact in the world by providing world-class marketing services to nonprofits. We began in April 2010 as a volunteer matching platform for nonprofits and digital marketing professionals. In the first year, Media Cause built a global network of more than 1,000 volunteers and completed over 100 pro bono marketing projects for smaller nonprofits and NGOs. It quickly became clear that a volunteer platform wasn’t enough. As a result, in 2011, our small staff began taking on consulting projects for nonprofits that needed additional marketing support, which forever changed the direction of Media Cause—a nonprofit marketing agency was born. Over the years, the company has grown and changed at a rapid rate, opening additional offices, adding new members to the team , expanding our services to adapt to the ever-changing digital marketing industry, focusing on DEIB, and giving others the tools they need to impact change with Rally Starter . Today we are a 50+ person team with 17 service areas and over 100 clients. Who We Work With Our Team Everyone here has two things in common: a hunger to do good and the ability to do it. Through powerful networks and advocacy, Ceres tackles the world’s biggest sustainability challenges, including climate change, water scarcity and pollution, and inequitable workplaces. They have a goal to grow digital individual giving program; specifically by upgrading donors to their Ceres 1,000 donor community as well as acquiring new donors to commit to their mission. Client Issue Area Environment The Outcome Overall, year-end fundraising was a great success for Ceres—helping them drive a 61% increase in YoY revenue during November and December 2019. We saw an increase in the number of gifts and the average gift size. 22% Increase in # of gifts 32% Increase in average gift .12% Unsubscribe rate The Challenge Multiple challenges face all nonprofits as they try and mature their digital fundraising strategy. In Ceres’ case their challenges were similarly multi-fold: Acclimating their existing email file into participating philanthropically in Ceres’ mission while also not overburdening their networks with appeal emails. Explaining how Ceres’ long-term vision of creating a sustainable future leads to deliberate actions by investors, companies, governments, and other key stakeholders actually moves the needle. Competition within the environmental vertical from organizations that are responding in real-time to massive environmental disasters such as wildfires, both domestically and abroad, increasingly powerful hurricanes and tropical storms; all with devastating and immediate consequences for people, environments and communities everywhere. Strategic Volume & Timeliness Implementation Increased email volume during key moments of the giving calendar, when every email list will be competing for the top of inboxes, and it’s vital to stay top of mind. For each send, we employed strategic suppressions to remove recent donors, or those who should not receive a given ask. We developed an email framework that had flexibility. It’s crucial to plan ahead and make your own moments, but when political news breaks that affect the work fighting climate change, or storms strike, or there is a natural moment to weigh in, we take these opportunities. “Always On” Themes and Ideas Ceres’ Strategic Plan is oriented around four key global challenges: climate change, water scarcity and pollution, inequitable workplaces and outdated capital market systems. As such, the messaging around that subject permeated through all of the messaging in some form or another; ranging from a one-click engagement to longer-form programmatic cultivations that goes into more detail on the issues stated above. Similarly, appeal content relied heavily upon Ceres’ Strategic Plan with the expectation that our increased volume; a diverse, tactical approach to storytelling; and tailored treatment plans will ultimately drive increases in digital revenue in the short and long term. Smart Segmentation Understanding performance across key donor life-cycle based segments allowed us to refine and improve tactics that were working and abandon tactics that were underwhelming. Additionally, dynamic, activity-based segmentation provided us with opportunities to get the very most out of warm prospective donor segments. With a blend of grabbing creative and tried-and-true tactics. We started with meaningful cultivations, showing the impact Ceres had made for the planet and the climate, careful to tie this success with donor support. We seized the Thanksgiving moment to express deep gratitude to Ceres supporters, before a pivot to time-bound matching gift promotions. Activity-based and Life-cycle based Segmentation + Targeting Year-end fundraising is marked with an increased volume of email, especially solicitations. But we were careful that not every member of Ceres’ audience received the same messages, taking care to target specific segments with carefully calibrated ask language, tailored for mid-level donors, lapsed donors, leads, and recent donors. We also pushed this strategy one step further, developing emails customized only specific audiences, with their unique needs in front of mind, including a limited cadence for highly generous mid-level donors. Finally, we let the data guide us. Following a strong response on Giving Tuesday and 12/31, we launched transactional kickers to maximize return — a decision that paid high dividend. Flexible and Topical Messaging Frame To achieve year-end success, we laid the groundwork early, working to activate a relatively uninitiated email list with engaging cultivations and acclimating them to taking action via email — whatever that action may be. Further, we leveraged current events to underscore the tremendous stakes of Ceres’ work, and remind our audience they had the power to affect real and substantial change. Example : Come year-end, we harnessed the power of the year-end calendar, promoting our most urgent, lucrative asks on key days including Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday, 12/30 and 12/31. Outside these tentpole moments — which we used to their maximum potential — we invested time and effort in cultivating the audience, expressing deep thanks for their partnership. What’s more, we ensured Ceres’ email list received a timely reminder of the importance of their work ahead of being approached for fundraising. Multi-channel Alignment It’s tempting to evaluate your fundraising efforts in silos, but the real story is much more complex than last-click attribution suggests. Web assets, social media posts, and emails work in tandem to build an echo chamber of complementary messaging. While a gift may be completed on email, it’s possible a person learned of a matching gift on social media, priming them to take action. A gift may seem “organic” — but it’s quite possible a donor found their inspiration to give on Twitter. That’s why we created a careful echo chamber, utilizing a lightbox and robust email cadence, with a social media schedule to match. It’s no wonder that more than half of online gifts were processed outside specific year-end donation pages. A strong fundraising presence raises all channels, as it did for Ceres, with its 61% increase in revenue and 22% increase in donors, YoY. Overall, year-end fundraising was a great success for Ceres— helping them drive a 61% increase in YoY revenue during November and December 2019. We saw an increase in the number of gifts and the average gift size. Ceres’ work is made possible by generous individuals, foundations, and other partners who invest in a sustainable future through their philanthropic support of Ceres. In 2019, Ceres engaged over 65 companies like JetBlue, Coca-Cola and UPS to reduce their environmental impacts and increase sustainability performance. As a nonprofit, you compete with countless organizations every day that are trying to win the support of the same audiences. While there’s bound to be some overlap in missions, we believe true differentiation comes from your brand. Your brand is the way your organization tells its story. It’s the simple message you say over and over; it’s how you’re perceived. It sets the expectation for each interaction audiences have with you, and most importantly, it builds recognition and trust. Think of it as an instant shortcut to create meaning in the minds of your audience. Our nonprofit branding services look at your brand from a holistic perspective to create a consistent identity, tone, and voice. Work With Us Our Approach to Branding + Strategy Our nonprofit branding services analyze your brand, audience, and competitors to uncover hidden insights and form the building blocks to articulate your brand. Our nonprofit branding services start with understanding your audience first, so we can truly position your brand in a way that’s relevant to their needs, wants, and motivations. Then, we look at your brand from a holistic perspective to create a consistent identity, tone, and narrative. All the elements of your brand— from your mission statement and positioning to your visual identity and messaging— need to be communicated across every organizational touchpoint: telling a cohesive story of who you are, what you stand for, and why your audiences should care and connect. Our approach follows a series of steps to create your cohesive brand. Discovery Understanding your current brand and challenges, as well as your overall mission and goals, will help to better analyze where you are and where you would like your brand to be in the future. Research Looking at not only your audience but also your potential audience and competitors will find what resonates most with the audience you’d like to reach. Brand Language + Personality Defining how you communicate with your audience is an essential piece to your brand. Your positioning and personality will work to set you apart from all the other orgs in your space (and beyond). Visual Identity This step creates the complete expression of your brand positioning. Your visual identity will capture your organization’s spirit, services, and impact. Brand Guidelines All elements will come together for your brand guidelines. Audience Research + Insights It’s critical to pay attention to the people who are at the receiving end of your brand: your audiences. Our audience research encompasses surveys, focus groups, and brand equity + perception studies to gain insight into who both your current and target audiences are. Brand Development Our brand development service takes our learnings and puts them to work. We create brand language, positioning and personality, and architecture, then conduct brand language testing—to ensure it works. The final element we’ll work on is the creative, including your logo design, visual identity, and creative brief. Brand Guidelines Once we have all of the elements of your brand—language, visual identity, tone—we pull it all together into one final deliverable: your custom set of brand guidelines. How Branding Can Help Your Nonprofit A brand is more than a logo, a tagline, or a rational explanation of your services and mission. It’s a set of beliefs, perceptions, feelings, and connotations that are influenced by your organization but amplified and activated by people. Your brand image is how people perceive and, most importantly, trust your nonprofit. Brands with more trust see higher success in their interactions with their supporters. From increased fundraising to expanded awareness, a strong brand can help you reach your organizational goals and share your nonprofit’s mission with an expanded audience.
