Advances in veterinary medicine have been phenomenal in the last 20 years. Our cherished canine friends have benefited in a great way. One of the most recent advances we have seen is in the area of Physical Rehabilitation. Research indicates that loss of muscle mass begins within 24 hours following surgery or serious injury. An increase in swelling occurs, in addition to loss of muscle control and stiffening of joints, when rehabilitation is delayed. Gone are the days of performing surgery or putting on a cast, and discharging a patient without rehabilitation. We are excited to be able to offer our community the latest in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Our goal is to combine accepted physical therapy methods with an individual home controlled exercise program to safely return pets to their active lives. And whether you own a small toy poodle, robust Labrador Retriever, scruffy Schnauzer, you name it, almost all dogs love spending time outdoors. But before the fun begins, it is important to provide your pets with the protection they need to keep them healthy, as there are a few considerations involved if your pet will be spending time outside. In addition to protecting your pet from the risks of fleas and ticks , one BIG topic many veterinarians are now discussing with dog owners is Leptospirosis. What is Leptospirosis? Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease (can be spread from animals to humans), that is spread via bacteria in which wildlife and domestic animals are the reservoir hosts. The disease most commonly affects dogs, and symptoms are usually not recognized in cats if they are a host. There is no current vaccine for cats. Although our animals are at a much higher risk for contraction than people, Leptospirosis is still a notable disease identified in humans today. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) there are an estimated 100-200 human cases reported in the United States annually. Where can my dog contract Leptospirosis? Leptospirosis used to be considered something that only farm and hunting dogs contract. That thinking has changed significantly as the disease has spread to become one of the most common diseases for dogs. In fact, it is the #1 canine disease in Manhattan! The bacteria commonly occur within wildlife animals such as racoons, skunks, and possums. Bacteria must be absorbed through the mucous membranes (mouth, eyes or an open wound) Your pet can become infected from drinking water in which animal hosts have excreted the bacteria in their urine such as rivers, lakes and ponds. He or she can also pick up the disease directly from the soil we walk on if the bacteria were expelled there. In other cases, the disease can be spread via direct contact with an infected animal or diseased carcass. What are the symptoms of Leptospirosis? According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA): If symptoms are visible, you may notice weakness, reluctance to move, inappetence, vomiting and diarrhea, jaundice (yellowing of the gums and eyes) frequent water intake and frequent urination. The disease, when severe and untreated, may cause kidney failure in your pet, as well as bleeding disorders. As with any disease, diagnosis is key to treating it accordingly. These symptoms can be seen with several other diseases so additional testing such as radiographs, bloodwork, urinalysis, etc., may be needed for official diagnosis. How is Leptospirosis treated? Leptospirosis is treated with antibiotics and supportive care. If diagnosed, your pet will likely spend several days hospitalized, undergoing an aggressive treatment. The risk of permanent residual kidney or liver damage does still exist. If your pet is being treated for Leptospirosis, our hospital, along with the AVMA, recommends the following precautionary steps: Avoid contact with your dog’s urine. If possible, allow your pet to urinate in an isolated area outside where no other animals will have contact and where there is no standing water. If your dog urinates in your home, quickly clean the area with a household disinfectant and wear gloves to avoid skin contact with the urine; Administer antibiotics and all medications as prescribed by the veterinarian Wash your hands after handling your pet. How can I prevent Leptospirosis in my dog? As with any disease or illness, PREVENTION IS KEY. The best way to protect your dog from contracting Leptospirosis is by vaccinating against the disease. The Leptospirosis vaccine has gotten better and safer over time and has been shown to be safe and effective when given every 12 months. It is now advised for every dog. As with any vaccine there is always a risk of a vaccine reaction. If your pet is receiving the Leptospirosis vaccine for the first time, please watch for a reaction. If you notice any scratching of the face, facial swelling, hives, vomiting, diarrhea or trouble breathing, contact your veterinarian immediately. Reduction to possible sources of exposure is important if your pet is not currently up to date on their yearly Leptospirosis vaccine; avoid areas where the bacteria is commonly seen. This means any lakes, rivers or outdoor areas where wildlife exists. As devoted pet owners, we strive to have as much time with our companions as we can because they aren’t just animals, they are a part of the family. Keeping them in tip-top health starts with prevention. At Muller Veterinary Hospital, one of our biggest goals is preventing illness. Vaccinating your dog contributes to what we call “community immunity.” By preventing your pet from contracting the disease, you contribute to an overall defense that will keep the disease from getting a foothold in the Bay Area. Dental health is an important, but often overlooked, aspect of pet well-being. Poor dental health is painful and can dramatically affect a pet’s quality of life. Furthermore, bacteria from the mouth can travel to distant organs such as the heart and kidneys to cause further trouble. Preventing dental problems with regular teeth cleanings, and treating painful teeth when they develop, can vastly improve a pet’s overall health. When should I begin taking my pet for professional teeth cleaning? Many of our pets will start to show signs of periodontal disease by the age of 3. Periodontal disease develops as the bacteria in plaque (the white sticky stuff that forms on teeth) causes gingivitis, which is inflammation of the gum tissue (think of bleeding gums when you brush or floss). Early gingivitis is reversible, but if periodontal disease is allowed to progress, there can be permanent loss of gum and bone tissue that surround the tooth roots. * Note that small and flat-faced dog breeds are at greater risk of dental problems due to crowding of their teeth into smaller, less “wolf-like” mouths. Veterinary dentists have a saying—if your dog is smaller than a bread box, it should begin prophylactic dental cleanings very early in life (sometimes as young as 1-2 years of age). Do cats need regular professional teeth cleaning too? Yes! Cats are different creatures than dogs and often develop something called resorptive lesions. No one knows exactly why cats develop this problem. Resorptive lesions are painful areas that develop near the gum margin on the tooth itself. When teeth are resorbing, the immune system eats away at the tooth until the tooth disappears and bone replaces the root of the tooth. Once bone fully replaces the root of the tooth and the crown (top part) of the tooth is gone, it is typically not painful. However, the process of the tooth getting to this point is extremely painful and can take years to a lifetime to achieve, so prevention or extraction are necessary. What is involved in professional teeth cleaning for my pet? Most of us don’t enjoy having someone poke and prod in our mouths, but we tolerate it because we understand the risks of not taking good care of our teeth and gums. Our beloved pets (no matter how intelligent they may be!) don’t have a similar ability to take the bigger picture into account. For that reason, a thorough pet dental cleaning , officially called a COHAT (Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment), must be done under general anesthesia with appropriate pre and intra-operative precautionary measures. At Muller Veterinary Hospital, we always perform pre-examination bloodwork to identify any issues, such as signs of cardiovascular disease, which would make going under anesthesia riskier. Depending upon your pet’s health profile, he or she may need additional tests prior to the COHAT. The goal of the pre and intra-operative measures is to make sure that the COHAT is as risk-free and comfortable as possible. The “C” in COHAT stands for “comprehensive” for a reason – while your pet is under anesthesia, it is useful (and cost-effective!) to get as much accomplished as possible. Here is what a complete veterinary exam and treatment should include: Thorough oral exam – an important opportunity to identify tumors early Scale and polish teeth above and below the gumline. Polishing will smooth out the surface of the tooth, which gets roughened with scaling, to make it more difficult for future plaque and bacteria to adhere to the tooth. Check each tooth thoroughly for root exposure, gingival pockets, mobility, and fractures. X-ray any problem teeth to visualize the roots (the part of the tooth under the gums).* After these steps are taken, the owner will receive a call to discuss the oral exam findings. If the teeth are healthy, the pet will be woken up. If there are problem teeth, these will be discussed with the owner and a treatment plan will be made. Future steps could include extended release antibiotic, tooth extraction, or referral to a veterinary dental specialist for more advanced procedures. * Note: X-ray images must be taken in order for the exam to truly be thorough. Not all veterinary hospitals can perform dental X-rays. At Muller Veterinary Hospital, we have a high quality digital dental X-ray unit, which means we can develop images instantly, minimizing the amount of time your pet would remain under anesthesia. Is brushing my pet’s teeth at home sufficient? While getting in a routine of brushing your pet’s teeth at home is an important ingredient to dental health, it is not sufficient. Even if you are brushing your pet’s teeth DAILY (which is great!), he or she should be scheduled for regular cleaning and assessment by a trained veterinarian. Just like we all need to go to the dentist regularly in order to maintain healthy gums and teeth (and fix problems when they arise), our pets’ teeth and gums need regular professional attention in order to remain healthy. So what does this all mean? Key things you can do right now to ensure good dental (and overall!) health for your pet: If your dog or cat is approaching 3 years old or older, and has not yet had a comprehensive dental examination, schedule one soon. If you own a small or “flat-faced” (brachycephalic) breed, discuss when to schedule that initial exam with your veterinarian – 2 years of age or younger is common. Begin or renew your efforts to brush your pet’s teeth daily. If you need help learning how, you can schedule an appointment with us and we can walk you through the process. The website vohc.org also has a list of treats, supplements, and products that the board certified veterinary dentists have reviewed and given their seal of approval. Keep in mind that any chew toys or treats need to be soft enough to not break a tooth. A quick way to check this is to take your thumb nail and try to make an indentation on the treat with your thumb. If the treat does not “give” or you can’t make a mark on it (aside from kibble or dog cookie type treats) then it is too hard and a broken tooth could result. This means bully sticks, many nylabones, real meat bones, antlers, pig ears, hooves, ice cubes, etc., can break teeth necessitating extractions or root canals. Proper dental care as we’ve outlined here will ultimately save you money and greatly improve your pet’s quality of life. If you have questions regarding your pet’s dental health, please give us a call to schedule an appointment with one of our veterinarians. As with most things health related, prevention is the name of the game so that a single health issue doesn’t lead to problems in other areas as well. Annual check ups are necessary to ensure that your kitty remains happy, healthy, and lives a long life. Beware of Tooth Decay You can expect to see problems with your cat’s teeth more than anywhere else in their anatomy. If periodontal disease in felines is left untreated, it’s common for painful abscesses to form, as well as infection of the bone and the surrounding tissue. When bacteria from the mouth escapes into the bloodstream, it has the possibility of travelling to the heart and kidneys. Gingivitis, or swelling of the gums is also quite painful, so it is possible for weight loss to become an issue if your cat refuses to eat over a course of several weeks or months. Something that many cat owners don’t anticipate, are “resorptive lesions.” A resorptive lesion occurs when a tooth begins to erode and break down, about 20 to 60 percent of cats experience this problem. This generally requires oral surgery or cleaning for which your cat will need to be anesthetized. There are Other Reasons for Weight Loss A small amount of weight loss could be normal due to age, but it could also indicate other issues such as hyperthyroidism or inflammatory bowel disease. These health concerns are fairly common in senior cats, but you might not notice them right away because of how slowly the decline in their weight occurs. Annual check ups are a sure way to pick up on a pound or two loss that you wouldn’t normally notice. Watch Out for Food Allergies Most likely your cat could eat anything when they were young and resilient, but as they mature certain foods may not agree with her. More and more, low carb, limited ingredient or fresh diets are being recommended for cats to prevent skin, endocrine, and digestive issues. Regular kibble is high in carbs and low in fluid content which can contribute to diabetes, kidney disease and dental problems. Domesticated cats and felines in general have exceptionally higher protein needs than other animals. Canines are omnivorous, meaning they can survive on a combination of veggies and meat, while cats require an amino acid called taurine, which can only be found in meat. As true carnivores, cats need a diet that is high in fresh animal proteins, and low in carbohydrates. Cardiovascular Health Heart disease is a common ailment among felines, specifically hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This condition makes it more difficult for the hart to pump blood adequately, resulting in poor circulation to the brain and other major organs. While, unfortunately, many adult cats are diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, the underlying cause is often very treatable (like in the case of hyperthyroidism). Nail Care Should Be More Frequent You’re probably used to having your cat’s nails trimmed or trim them yourself if they allow it, every few weeks or so. Older cats begin to grow much thicker nails, but they’re brittle and more prone to breaks and snags. Senior cats can’t retract their nails as easily either, so may become overgrown and start to curl into the paws if a regular trimming is neglected. So, How Often are Cats Really Required to See a Vet? Veterinarians recommend annual exams until cats grow to be about 10 years of age. Afterward, every six months; keep in mind that these are recommendations for healthy cats with no serious health concerns. Felines with illnesses like diabetes and other permanent issues may need to see a veterinarian more often. While cats are tough, resilient creatures, they still need regular, proactive medical care and prevention. As they tend to be quiet, stoic pets, they aren’t as vocal about their aches and pains as canines are. It pays to get an appointment for your cat’s annual checkup on the calendar!     Share this: facebook x instagram print mail Search Search Facebook Yelp Instagram Muller Veterinary Hospital, Walnut Creek 2735 N Main St Walnut Creek, CA 94597 925-934-8042 Fax: 925-947-1285 Email Us Hours of Operation: M-F 8AM - 6PM Open 8AM - 3PM the following Saturdays: June 13 and 27; July 11 and 25 Closed Sundays Muller Veterinary Hospital, Walnut Creek Contact Us 925-934-8042 2735 N Main St Walnut Creek, CA 94597 Email Us By Appointment Only Muller Veterinary Hospital is the perfect place to find the best in East Bay Veterinarians, Walnut Creek Veterinary Hospital, Veterinary Acupuncture, Veterinary Rehabilitation. As with all of our clients and patients, our focus is on the well-being of your companion. Services for Exotic Pets Wellness care – work with us to ensure proper nutrition, grooming and housing conditions. We recommend an initial evaluation followed by annual checkups. Spay, neuter & general surgery – as with dogs and cats, we maintain the expertise and resources to perform surgeries. When more specialized procedures are required, we coordinate with local specialists. Dental care – particularly with rodents, it is critical that your pet be provided opportunities to chew and grind down their ever-growing teeth. Regular checkups can ensure that teeth are in good health, or provide us the opportunity to perform any necessary trimming. Skin care – our Bay Area climate is not ideal for many kinds of animals. Often, this mismatch will present itself on the skin, scales, or feathers. Additionally, skin conditions may indicate the presence of mites, bacteria or fungus. Keeping up with annual checkups, and recognizing issues early, will help ensure a happy, healthy pet! We often get asked what makes dental care cost more than other types of veterinary procedures. It’s an understandable question, especially because we can often have our own teeth cleaned for a fraction of what it can cost for a pet dental cleaning. In fact, a Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment (COHAT) for your pet may be more expensive because he or she requires anesthesia to allow for a thorough exam and safe treatment. Regularly brushing your pet’s teeth is a great idea, but like for most people, regular professional cleanings are needed to maintain or regain good oral health. What is involved in a thorough dental evaluation and cleaning? In order to truly understand your pet’s dental health, your veterinarian must do more than clean the teeth. As we outlined in our prior post Does My Pet Need Professional Teeth Cleaning? , after the cleaning and polishing is completed your pet’s veterinary team will perform a thorough oral exam assessing periodontal disease, damaged or mobile teeth, and look for growths or masses that would otherwise be missed. So what does that mean? Not all veterinarians follow the same practices, so it is important to have your vet provide a detailed description of what your pet’s exam will include. As one of the few AAHA-certified veterinary hospitals in our area, we adhere to AAHA Dental Care Guidelines to ensure safe, complete, and effective dental care for our patients. The foundation of these guidelines is: 1. Rigorous Safety Measures: Since the procedure is performed under general anesthesia, proper evaluation and monitoring is critical. Considerations include: • Pre-operative labwork to ensure healthy kidneys, liver, & blood cell counts • Possibly a chest X-ray or ultrasound to identify signs of cardiovascular disease, which could increase the risk of anesthetic • Intravenous catheter to allow supportive fluid therapy and access to give medications • Intubation to protect the airway and safely provide oxygen (prevent tartar/plaque/bacteria from going down into the lungs) • Monitoring of all vital signs including blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate and temperature throughout the procedure 2. Thorough Cleaning: Your pet’s teeth will be scaled with an ultrasonic cleaner and polished above and below the gumline to clean the teeth and to make it more difficult for future plaque and bacteria to adhere to the tooth. 3. Detailed Evaluation: The veterinarian will perform a thorough oral exam, checking each tooth for root exposure, gingival pockets, mobility, and fractures. Any problem teeth will be X-ray’d to visualize the tooth root (the part of the tooth under the gums). 4. X-Rays of Problem Areas: At Muller Veterinary Hospital, we use on-site, high-quality digital X-ray equipment so that images can be immediately evaluated, while your pet is still asleep. This is the type of equipment that your own dentist likely uses to visualize your teeth and mouth. By having immediate access to the images on a computer screen, we can potentially address issues during the same visit, which can be cost-effective for you and beneficial for your pet. Are X-ray images essential? Absolutely! Without dental X-ray imaging, the veterinarian cannot evaluate the tooth root – often where tooth problems first develop. These images also make it much safer to perform extractions by letting the veterinarian visualize the tooth root. It also minimizes the chances of missing problems in the mouth such as a broken or infected root, or bone cancer surrounding a tooth. 5. Consultation : Once the assessment is complete, the veterinarian will call you to discuss the exam findings. If the teeth are healthy, there will be no intervention needed. If there are problem teeth, these will be discussed and a treatment plan will be made and whenever possible implemented the same day. These options could include monitoring, deep gum treatment, extraction, or referral to a veterinary dental specialist for advance dental care. If you haven’t had your pet’s dental health evaluated, there is no better time than the present. Preventive dental care can help your pet stay healthy longer. If you have any questions, please call us at (925)934-8042 to schedule a visit with our veterinarians to discuss your pet’s dental health. Osteoarthritis is a progressive disease that starts as early as 18 months of age in dogs or earlier with joint injury or genetic disorder. There are many options that can be used to create a multimodal management plan to help relieve the pain and disability that accompany osteoarthritis in dogs. These options include: prescription medications, supplements, special diet, physical modalities, and joint injections. There are many reasons to consider joint injections, in addition to, or in place of the above-mentioned therapies. These reasons may include a poor response or intolerance of prescriptions, anxiety in the veterinary setting for weekly therapies, or a desire for a more direct approach. Plus, they are low risk with possible 24-48 hour injection soreness. How is Canine Flu spread: Much like the human flu that we are familiar with, canine influenza can be spread by both direct contact and indirect contact to the virus. This means a dog could catch the flu directly from coming into contact with the respiratory secretions of an infected dog (a bark, cough, or sneeze). A dog can also be infected by coming in contact with an OBJECT that has been in contact with an infected dog. (These objects can be anything from a ball, leash, toy, water bowl, clothing, floor, or the hand of a person that has come in contact with an infected dog.) Unfortunately, there is no “season” for the canine influenza virus and it can be spread year round. Symptoms of Canine Influenza: The symptoms of the flu can range from mild to severe. In more mild cases dogs developed a cough (which can last up to a month). They may also experience fever, lethargy, eye and nasal discharge. In more severe cases, a dog may experience very high fevers, pneumonia, and in very rare circumstances the canine flu is fatal. What makes canine influenza even more contagious is that a dog that has been infected with the virus may not be showing symptoms of illness. It may take up to 5 days for a dog to start showing any signs that they are ill. However, the infected dog can spread the disease within 2 to 3 days after initially being exposed to the virus. In a small number of dogs (~20%) there are no symptoms present at all and these animals are still able to spread the disease. Treatment for Canine Influenza: The treatment for the virus will vary depending on the severity of the symptoms. Dogs with more mild symptoms may need oral medications and home care, while more severe cases may require a dog to be hospitalized. Regardless of the symptoms, all dogs with canine influenza need to be quarantined for 4 weeks to prevent the spread of the disease. Is my dog at risk for catching the flu: This is a newer disease to the United States. Because of that, there is no current natural immunity for our Northern California pets to fight the virus. All dogs that are exposed to the virus will become infected. Dogs that travel or will have exposure to dogs from areas with confirmed cases of canine influenza have the highest risk of contracting the disease. If you will be traveling with your dog, a Google search like “canine influenza in [the location you’ll be visiting]” may turn up information about a current outbreak. DogFlu.com , a site published by Merck, contains useful information like this canine influenza outbreak map . In recent years confirmed cases have been found in nearly every U.S. state and several Asian countries, so it’s important to be informed. It is important to remember that even if you are not traveling to these areas your dog may still be at risk. Situations like dog shows, agility competitions, and potentially boarding facilities may increase the chances for exposure to dogs from areas with confirmed cases of the flu. Is there a flu vaccine for my dog: Yes, currently there is a vaccine available to dogs that are at risk for contracting the flu. The vaccine is given as a 2 vaccine series (one initial vaccine followed by a booster vaccine). Currently, the vaccine is offered as a lifestyle vaccine. If you feel your dog has an exposure risk to canine influenza discuss the vaccine with a veterinarian. This helpful “vaccine calculator” can guide your conversation about the influenza vaccine and others that may be appropriate for your pet. Also, if you use a boarding facility regularly it is important to contact them to see if their vaccine requirements have changed. Boarding facilities can change their vaccine requirements at their discretion, so it is important to see if they will require the flu vaccine before you take your dog there. Are other species at risk for catching the Canine Flu: Currently, one strain of the virus has been reported to infect cats. And there is evidence to support that guinea pigs and ferrets may also be infected by the virus. Cats that are infected with the virus may have nasal discharge, congestion, excessive salivation, lethargy, and other symptoms of upper respiratory disease. Once a cat has been exposed to the virus it is possible for the cat to spread the virus to another cat. The virus cannot be passed to humans. But it is important to remember that people can be “objects” that spread the virus from dog to dog. What should I do if I think my dog has the flu: If your dog is showing symptoms of canine influenza call our Walnut Creek veterinary office immediately to discuss the symptoms you are seeing at home. In very mild cases of the flu the symptoms may resemble kennel cough (a different contagious cough). After discussing your dog’s symptoms we will direct you further on how to obtain the proper treatment. Because this virus is so contagious, we ask that you call first before coming to the hospital. In cases where a patient is severely ill, we may refer to a facility that can provide appropriate 24 hour care. We appreciate that it is disconcerting to learn that there is a risk of your pet contracting Canine Influenza in Northern California. Please do contact us directly if you have questions or concerns. Learn more Home About Us Our Veterinarians New Clients Hospital Hours What Clients Say Employment Opportunities Services Wellness & Primary Care Pain Management Arthritis Treatment Options Exotic Pets The Canine Rehab Center Online Pharmacy Resources Blog Visit Map & Directions Hospital Hours  (925) 934-8042 Walnut Creek Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHDV2) As we first told you in June, 2020, the Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus Type 2 (RHDV2) was reported in a dead wild rabbit in Palm Springs. This was the first case known in California and raised significant concerns about both wild and pet-owned rabbit populations. Since then, this virus has been confirmed in domestic rabbits in 55 locations in Southern California, and there are now 3 reported cases in Northern California – a wild jackrabbit in Alameda County, and domestic rabbits in Sonoma and Fresno counties. In addition to the preventive and biosecurity measures we discuss below, we are pleased to announce that we will offer a limited number of RHDV2 vaccines at Muller Veterinary Hospital in the near future. Please take a look at the RHDV2 Vaccine Information Sheet for more information. RHDV2 INFO & RECOMMENDED BIOSECURITY MEASURES TO KEEP YOUR PET SAFE VIRUS INFORMATION There is very little “good news” about this virus, other than it is NOT transmissible to any other species – this does not put humans or other household pets at risk. Unfortunately, the bad news is very bad. This virus can decimate wild rabbit populations. It can remain in the environment for long periods of time and is resistant to temperature changes (heat and frost). It can survive in rabbit feces, as well as in digestive tracts of predator animals. It can be spread by scavenger animals (crows, foxes) and by insects. Spread is through direct contact between rabbits, as well as indirect contact as outlined above. Other sources of indirect transmission include objects and places – rabbit cages, grooming equipment, table surfaces, including veterinary hospitals. It takes only a few viral particles for infection to occur. It has a short incubation period, of 1-5 days, and death can occur within 24 hours. SYMPTOMS This is a HIGHLY contagious, fatal disease that causes bleeding and liver failure. Symptoms include lethargy, not eating, fever, convulsions or other neurologic signs, difficulty breathing, bleeding and sudden death. (Remember that other diseases can also cause these symptoms such as cancer, bacterial infection from a bite wound, and heatstroke). There are no reliable diagnostic tests with a sick rabbit. Unfortunately, this is a disease that is usually made after the rabbit dies. There is no specific treatment available. MEASURES THAT PET OWNERS CAN TAKE = BIOSECURITY The most important measures to protect your rabbit is KEEP HER/HIM INDOORS AND NOT ALLOW OUTSIDE PLAY. We also recommend avoiding moving your rabbits around (shows, travel, vacations). Other measures include removing your shoes before entering your home, avoiding contact with other people’s rabbits and limiting their contact with yours, insect proofing your home, and disinfection. Wash rabbit towels and protective clothing in HOT cycles, run twice. Check your sources for rabbit food to ensure their products like pellets and hay do not come from RHDV2 areas. Several websites below contain specific measures that can be taken to protect pet rabbits. BLEACH DISINFECTION The virus can be inactivated by 10% bleach solution (sodium hypochlorite), with 5 minute contact time. This solution can be made by adding ½ cup household bleach to 1 gallon water. Ideally, make new bleach solutions every 24 hours and store in a cool dark place. The virus is NOT inactivated by Lysol spray or Clorox wipes. MEASURES THAT MULLER VETERINARY HOSPITAL IS TAKING We are developing protocols to keep your bunny as safe as possible while she/he is in the veterinary hospital. We will be informing you of these protocols prior to any appointment with your rabbit.
