Who are we? We are a racially diverse church: our congregation is Black, White, Asian, and Latino/a. We are a socioeconomically diverse church: about a third of us live in Skid Row, about two-thirds of us live in the Downtown lofts or around the Los Angeles Metro Area. We are a community of families, singles, and kids. We believe in being non-judgmental because we know that we ourselves are more flawed and broken than we’re even aware of — yet more loved and accepted by God through Jesus than we’ve ever dared to imagine. So, we say, “come as you are.” Are We a ‘Liberal’ or ‘Conservative’ Church? We are neither a conservative church nor a liberal church. The gospel doesn’t fit neatly into those categories at all – it is a third way. Christianity isn’t about adhering to a list of “dos” and “don’ts,” or uncritically aligning with particular political agendas; it’s about being renewed in the right relationship to God through grace and learning how to extend that renewing love in the world through our lives and in our communities. We acknowledge that we are all in a process of formation; we are sinners who are loved by God, in process of transformation by God’s grace and invited to share that grace through our everyday lives. A Gospel-Centered Church Our core belief is Christ-centered. We approach the gospel of Jesus Christ in three aspects (we call it the tripod of the gospel): Jesus came (incarnation), he died for us (atonement), and he resurrected, ascended, and is coming back (restoration). Incarnation : God became human and inaugurated an upside-down Kingdom (where going down is the way up) and a power-under Kingdom (where it is not about power-over, the power of the sword and violence, but about the power-under, the power of self-sacrificial and unconditional love and grace). The Church is called to reflect such Kingdom. Atonement : Jesus died for us because we are more messed up than we know but God loves us more than we can imagine. We are sinners living in God’s amazing grace. So, the Church is not about dos and don’ts but about embracing God’s love as we face our brokenness. When our heart is transformed by his love, our life also changes. The Church is called to embrace this amazing grace. Restoration : Jesus resurrected, ascended, and is coming back. We live in between the time of his first coming and his second coming. Our mission now to bring to the present that which is to come. We are called to bring God’s presence, healing, love, grace, and justice to the world now. The Church is called to join God in his mission. An Inclusive Church This plays out in a number of ways that we intentionally highlight in our church: (1) we are inclusive of broken, sinful people because we ourselves are broken, sinful people being restored by God’s grace. (2) We are multi-ethnic; we are about evenly spread out among 4 major ethnic groups; we have no dominant culture. (3) we are multi-socioeconomic; we have people who are homeless, working class, and professionals. (4) and we are multi-generational. (5) We are a church that seeks social justice while respecting different political perspectives on how to get there. (6) We are a church that includes women in leadership and challenges patriarchal assumptions; we are egalitarians. (7) We are a church that is inclusive of those who identify as LGBTQ. CORE VALUES Our core values are the DNA of our church. You’ll notice that our vision statement and our core values are one and the same; this is intentional. We seek to embody the first four values, and grow in our ability to DO the last four values. What we seek to be: Inclusive Gospel-Centered Community Lovers of Jesus Christ What we seek to do: Connect Grow Serve Extend “BE” Core Values: Inclusive : We are a multi-ethnic, multi-socioeconomic, multi-generational church where anyone can come as they are. We welcome everyone without judgment, whether they are Black, White, Latino, Asian. or Native, live in a penthouse loft or Skid Row, are young or old, identify as straight or LGBTQ, or identify as cisgender or transgender. We are a “come-as-you-are” church. Gospel-Centered : Our core belief is Christ-centered. The Church is called to reflect this Kingdom. Atonement : We were created beautifully in God’s image but our sins undermined that beauty. Jesus died for us to forgive us, redeem us, and free us from our sins. We are sinners living in God’s amazing grace. When our heart is transformed by his love, our life also changes. The Church is called to embrace this amazing grace. Restoration : Jesus resurrected, ascended, and is coming back to fully establish the Kingdom. We live in between the time of his first coming and his second coming. Our mission now is to bring to the present that which is to come. We are called to bring God’s presence, healing, love, grace, and justice to the world now. The Church is called to join God in his mission. Community : We are a community that cares for one another and demonstrates vulnerability with one another, which leads to true friendships. We are a community that accepts one another, even if we are different, poor, rich, average, arrogant, timid, or sinful. We are a community that mourns with those who mourn, and rejoices with those who rejoice. We are a community that seeks to be emotionally and intellectually honest with God and one another. Lovers of Jesus Christ : We love God because God first loved us. We seek to worship God and seek fellowship with him through spiritual practices. “DO” CORE VALUES: Connect People to God : We are passionate about welcoming into our community people in various stages of faith. In Sunday worship and throughout the week, we seek to be people who connect other people to the good news of God’s love through what we say and what we do. Grow Together : In order for us to grow together, for inside-out transformation to happen, we need to live by the Spirit, which we believe encompasses the following four things: Believing the gospel with all of ourselves (intellectually, emotionally, volitionally, spiritually), not just to become a Christian, but also to grow as a Christian. The gospel is the foundation for Christian growth . (Gospel-Centered) Drawing near to God as ‘Abba’ – the Aramaic word for ‘daddy’ that the Bible sometimes uses – is an intimate relationship with Him as a beloved child, seeking to walk in His presence every moment of our lives, listening to His direction, and obeying Him. Spiritual practices like (but not limited to) prayer, meditation, worship, Bible study, solitude, confession, and fasting help us develop this intimacy with God. This is the process for Christian growth . Through this intimate relationship with God, he transforms us from the inside out. (Contemplative) Being empowered with the Holy Spirit. We are asking God to empower us with the power of the Holy Spirit in order to prevail over the powers of darkness. We expect God’s supernatural power to help us grow as followers of Jesus Christ. This is the fuel for Christian growth . (Charismatic) Doing it together. We believe that transformation happens in the context of community. This is the context for Christian growth . It is through gospel-centered, mutually-upbuilding, honest relationships that we spur one another to live by the Spirit. (Communal) Serve the City : We believe an active faith is to be lived in public. So we seek to be good news to those who are not part of our church – or any church – in Downtown LA and the surrounding neighborhoods, because we know God loves the city and the people in it, and he is at work to make it a place that reflects his mercy, justice, and love. We seek to do this through (1) ministries of compassion; (2) seeking social justice and racial reconciliation; and (3) integrating our faith and vocation. Extend God’s kingdom : We seek to develop leaders and disciples who extend the Kingdom of God by becoming part of the movement of the Kingdom of God, particularly by planting churches, both domestically and internationally. God has revealed himself to be the living and true God, perfect in love and righteous in all his ways; one in essence, existing eternally in the three persons of the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. 2. God, who discloses himself through his creation, has savingly spoken in the words and events of redemptive history. This history is fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the incarnate Word, who is made known to us by the Holy Spirit in sacred Scripture. 3. Scripture is an essential part and trustworthy record of this divine self-disclosure. All the books of the Old and New Testaments, given by divine inspiration, are the written word of God, the only infallible rule of faith and practice. They are to be interpreted according to their context and purpose and in reverent obedience to the Lord who speaks through them in living power. 4. God, by his Word and for his glory, freely created the world of nothing. He made man and woman in his own image, as the crown of creation, that they might have fellowship with him. Tempted by Satan, they rebelled against God. Being estranged from their Maker, yet responsible to him, they became subject to divine wrath, inwardly depraved, and, apart from grace, incapable of returning to God. 5. The only Mediator between God and humankind is Christ Jesus our Lord, God’s eternal Son, who, being conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary, fully shared and fulfilled our humanity in a life of perfect obedience. By his death in our stead, he revealed the divine love and upheld divine justice, removing our guilt and reconciling us to God. Having redeemed us from sin, the third day he rose bodily from the grave, victorious over death and the powers of darkness. He ascended into heaven where, at God’s right hand, he intercedes for his people and rules as Lord over all. 6. The Holy Spirit, through the proclamation of the gospel, renews our hearts, persuading us to repent of our sins and confess Jesus as Lord. By the same Spirit we are led to trust in divine mercy, whereby we are forgiven all our sins, justified by faith alone through the merit of Christ our Savior and granted the free gift of eternal life. 7. God graciously adopts us into his family and enables us to call him Father. As we are led by the Spirit, we grow in the knowledge of the Lord, freely keeping his commandments and endeavoring so to live in the world that all may see our good works and glorify our Father who is in heaven. 8. God, by his Word and Spirit, creates the one holy catholic and apostolic church, calling sinners out of the whole human race into the fellowship of Christ’s body. By the same Word and Spirit, he guides and preserves for eternity that new, redeemed humanity, which, being formed in every culture, is spiritually one with the people of God in all ages. 9. The church is summoned by Christ to offer acceptable worship to God and to serve him by preaching the gospel and making disciples of all nations, by tending the flock through the ministry of the word and sacraments and through daily pastoral care, by striving for social justice and by relieving human distress and need. 10. God’s redemptive purpose will be consummated by the return of Christ to raise the dead, to judge all people according to the deeds done in the body and to establish his glorious kingdom. The wicked shall be separated from God’s presence, but the righteous, in glorious bodies, shall live and reign with him forever. Then shall the eager expectation of creation be fulfilled and the whole earth shall proclaim the glory of God who makes all things new. The above statement of faith was adapted from Fuller Theological Seminary, the alma mater of several pastors on staff. LGBTQ Stance Our policy is inclusive and affirming of LGBTQ people but we respect everyone’s freedom of conscience as we consider this a disputable issue under Romans 14.
