As a new pet owner, you’re destined to have years of joy and love. Get off to a good start, beginning with learning about our city/state animal regulations, plus some helpful guidelines.     Immunizations For protection from common diseases, begin your puppy’s or kitten’s vaccinations at 8 weeks of age. At North Figueroa Animal Hospital, we’ll advise you of the best way to insure your pet’s good health through preventive immunizations and deworming. Rabies vaccination is required by California state law , starting at 3 months of age for all dogs, and also is recommended for cats. A rabies certificate is required by the city and/or county in order to license your dog. When you vaccinate with us, we will notify you when your pet's shots need to be renewed. Spay & Neuter Both the City and County of Los Angeles have spay/neuter ordinances requiring all dogs and cats over the age of 4 months to be spayed or neutered, with certain exceptions. These laws were passed to decrease the pet overpopulation in the Los Angeles area and lower the rate of unwanted pets that are euthanized in shelters. Early sterilization of dogs and cats can have a positive influence on behavior, as well as health benefits, plus substantial savings on your mandatory dog license. North Figueroa Animal Hospital is a participant in the LA City Animal Services Voucher Program, as well as other organizations that provide private financial assistance for spay and neutering services. County Animal Care & Control) Microchip ID We always advise you to put a visible ID on a pet’s collar, however, microchipping provides a safe and permanent way to assure your pet can be identified and returned to you if he/she becomes lost and brought to a vet or shelter for scanning. We provide microchipping by carefully injecting a tiny computer chip (about the size of a grain of rice) between the shoulder blades, just under the pet’s skin with your contact info. This way, even if your pet loses his or her collar, your pet can be identified and returned to you. And remember to update the contact info when you move, change your phone number, or rehome your pet.     Grooming All dogs and cats benefit from regular baths and brushing. This keeps their skin and fur clean and removes shedding fur. Long-haired breeds require higher maintenance, as they are susceptible to matting and benefit from professional grooming. Matted (knots) and tangled fur can result in pain, irritability, and restricted movement in your pet.  Groomers also provide nail clipping and other services. If a dog’s toenails are allowed to grow too long, they may curl back into the pads of his/her paws, resulting in severe pain, deformity, which could lead to an inability to walk. Regular clipping your cat's nails and providing a scratching post can reduce the possibility of damage to furniture. There are also benefits that are not as visible. During your visits, we’ll check your pet’s coat thoroughly and advise you of any grooming and/or skin care recommendations. He attended USC, Ross University, and Kansas State School of Veterinary Medicine, with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. He worked in emergency medicine prior to transitioning to private practice. In addition to his regular responsibilities, Dr. Vasquez enjoys mentoring veterinary students, as well as sharing his knowledge, speaking at schools about careers in veterinary medicine, and the human-animal bond. He also works with organizations like the Humane Society and local rescues, providing veterinary services for the pets of the homeless and impoverished families. Please bring proof of immunization with you. If your pet is not current or you do not have proof, you will be required to purchase all the vaccines require for surgery.     Spay & Neuter Schedule We perform spaying and neutering from Tuesday - Friday. You must arrive before 7:30 am. We do not require appointments, however, we recommend arriving early, as our facility often reaches full capacity. Puppies and kittens must weigh a minimum of 4 pounds and be at least 8 weeks old. Younger or lighter animals may be declined for their own safety.     Pre-op Instructions: For the safety and comfort of your pet, please observe the following guidelines prior to surgery: Adult Pets - No Food after 11 PM on the night before surgery. Puppies/Kittens age 4 months or younger - Small quantities of food and water can be fed until 6 AM the morning of surgery.   Keep pets indoors and/or confined the night before surgery to ensure they do not self-feed. We’d also appreciate it if you bathe your dog sometime during the week prior to surgery. Please inform us if your animal has any prior medical conditions, or has taken any medication or received any injections in the 2 weeks prior to surgery. We reserve the right to refuse surgery Any animal we feel may pose a health risk will not be operated on. We will not accept animals exhibiting signs of upper respiratory infection (runny eyes or nose or coughing) or any other illnesses.       Day of Surgery: Please take your dog for a walk on the morning of admission to empty their bladder and bowels. This helps prevent accidents while under general anesthetic. Dogs must arrive on-leash. Cats must be in carriers. If you do not have a carrier, we have carriers for purchase. Feral cats must be in a secure, live trap—one per trap.  We ask that you keep your pet in your car or crated until you have completed all of the required paperwork. Please be sure your car is kept at a comfortable temperature while your animal is waiting. A staff member will advise you when we are ready for your pet.  Our hospital accepts cash, VISA, Master Card, and debit cards. Sorry, we do not accept checks. Payment plans (if qualified) may be arranged with Scratch Pay .     Pick-Up Times: All cats and female dogs will be kept overnight after surgery and released the following morning, starting from 8 AM. Male dogs can usually be released the same day as surgery from 4 PM.     We do not have the facilities to board pets. If you are unable to pick up your pet at the designated time, please notify us as soon as possible. Pets not picked up at their designated pick-up time will be charged a late fee or a boarding fee. Note: Animals who are abandoned will be surrendered to the local animal shelter.     Post-op Care: Pain Medication Your pet received pain medication during the procedure. Do not give your pet any over-the-counter pain medications, such as aspirin, acetaminophen, or ibuprofen, as these and other over-the-counter pain medications can be dangerous. If you feel your pet needs additional pain management, please call our hospital so we can determine a safe prescription for your pet. Surgical Procedure Female dogs and cats (that had a spay surgery) have a mid-line incision in their abdomen. Male dogs have an incision just above the scrotum and male cats have two incisions, one in each side of the scrotum. The healing period for the incision varies from 14 to21 days. Check the incision site at least twice daily for 14 to 21 days. Redness and swelling should be minimal.  Male cats and dogs that had a neutering surgery may appear as if they still have testicles. All sutures are absorbable on the inside and the very outer layer of skin is held together with surgical glue and absorbable skin sutures. You must arrive before 7:30 am. We do not require appointments, however, we recommend arriving early, as our facility often reaches full capacity. Puppies and kittens must weigh a minimum of 4 pounds and be at least 8 weeks old. Younger or lighter animals may be declined for their own safety.     Pre-op Instructions: For the safety and comfort of your pet, please observe the following guidelines prior to surgery: Adult Pets - No Food after 11 PM on the night before surgery. Puppies/Kittens age 4 months or younger - Small quantities of food and water can be fed until 6 AM the morning of surgery.   Keep pets indoors and/or confined the night before surgery to ensure they do not self-feed. We’d also appreciate it if you bathe your dog sometime during the week prior to surgery. Please inform us if your animal has any prior medical conditions, or has taken any medication or received any injections in the 2 weeks prior to surgery. We reserve the right to refuse surgery Any animal we feel may pose a health risk will not be operated on. We will not accept animals exhibiting signs of upper respiratory infection (runny eyes or nose or coughing) or any other illnesses.       Day of Surgery: Please take your dog for a walk on the morning of admission to empty their bladder and bowels. This helps prevent accidents while under general anesthetic. Dogs must arrive on-leash. Cats must be in carriers. If you do not have a carrier, we have carriers for purchase. Feral cats must be in a secure, live trap—one per trap.  We ask that you keep your pet in your car or crated until you have completed all of the required paperwork. Please be sure your car is kept at a comfortable temperature while your animal is waiting. A staff member will advise you when we are ready for your pet.  Our hospital accepts cash, VISA, Master Card, and debit cards. Sorry, we do not accept checks. Types of exams include: Annual Wellness Exam Puppy and Kitten Care Senior Exam – geriatric screening for older pets prone to chronic illnesses Pet Adoption Exam – shelter certificates accepted for free medical exam Vaccinations Puppies need protection against dangerous infectious diseases that threaten their health and well-being. By administering immunizations early in life, followed by booster shots at scheduled intervals—we can keep your pet's immunity strong and healthy.
