The first step to becoming an NMCS volunteer is to complete an application. Food Pantry: Come once, come twice – no long-term commitment is required! Individuals interested in becoming a Food Pantry volunteer must fill out a short application, and after will receive links to sign up for all available dates. Shifts are available in the morning (8:30 – 10:00), and afternoon (12:30 – 3:30). The morning shift is responsible for unloading and unpacking food deliveries from the SF-Marin Food Bank, and then packaging up an assortment of fresh and packaged food for families. The afternoon shift is responsible for distributing food to participants at our farmer’s market style pantry. The first step in volunteering for the food pantry is to complete a volunteer application. About us 1972 is the year our organization took root in Novato. Now, in our 53rd year of service to people in need in North Marin, our mission is to empower youth, adults and families in our diverse community to achieve well-being, growth and success. North Marin Community Services (NMCS) evolved as a 501(c)(3) on January 1, 2018 through a merger between the Novato Youth Center and Novato Human Needs Center (tax ID# 94-1735064). The Emergency Rental Assistance, Prevention and Stabilization Program is part of NMCS’s Case Management family of services and provides financial support to Marin County residents who are homeless, at risk of losing housing, or who need help securing a deposit for housing. The program is open to all persons without discrimination based on race, creed, color, religion, sexual orientation, age, national origin, disability or family status. NMCS’s Case Management has several financial assistance programs; eligibility varies.   The Emergency Rental Assistance, Prevention and Stabilization Program serves as a last resource for applicants, recognizing that an accident, job loss or other unforeseen crisis can impact any household, placing them at risk for homelessness. This resource is critical in supporting our community. The goal of the Rental Assistance, Prevention and Stabilization Program is to prevent homelessness: providing support through case management, planning, and linking applicants to resources to support towards self-sufficiency. Case management staff will review eligibility with participants to submit an application for rental, mortgage, deposit, or other critical needs assistance. Tax refunds can help families navigate financial crises, pay down debt, manage household expenses, and start saving for the future. Each spring we partner with AARP’s IRS-certified volunteers to provide free drop-in income tax assistance for low and middle-income taxpayers. The Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC) is available to low- to moderate-income working individuals and couples, particularly those with children (the benefit amount depends on income and number of children). If you qualify for CalEITC and have a child/ren under the age of 6 as of the end of the tax year, you may qualify for up to $1,154 through the Young Child Tax Credit. Our Elementary Enrichment Program provides a safe and nurturing environment where our students learn and grow with one another. Children participate in fun engaging activities that help them further their learning, as well as receive academic support in math, science, language arts, reading, writing, and history. We help each child discover and explore something that is deeply interesting to them. A skill or a vocation or a passion for something that fills their futures with meaning and fuels their quest for knowledge. We guide students to proficiency in the 21st-century skills of critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration and ensure that students are developing good academic habits. We increase students’ social and emotional skills and decrease their likelihood of engaging in risky behaviors through research-based and age-appropriate curriculum with topics including self-esteem, bullying, peer relationships, and emotional management, providing an overall foundation for social and school success. After nearly two years of planning and meetings, the governing Boards of both sister organizations voted unanimously to officially merge after more than four decades of both agencies serving the Novato community. Now stronger together as North Marin Community Services (NMCS), we are serving over 10,000 people in need each year with 75 highly qualified staff and 400+ dedicated volunteers. This merger allowed for a transformational structural change that dramatically improved human services within North Marin for the underserved. The success of this merger can be attributed to our board of directors, staff, volunteers and supporters. No matter which door our clients now enter, they receive integrated services that help them be successful at home, at school and in life—lighting a pathway for a brighter future. In 2022, we celebrated 50 years of dedicated service with recognitions for our work during the pandemic and over 200,000 people served . Our leadership history is available here . Novato Youth Center History In 1966, the Novato Youth Center began as a dream by families who wanted a safe and nurturing place for Novato’s youth. A decade later, after community organizing and fundraising, the newly built facility opened its doors at 680 Wilson Ave. Initially named the Novato Boys Club, the Center evolved and became the Novato Youth Center in 1983. In 1990, the facility was expanded from 15,000 sq ft to 22,000 sq ft, and more programs were launched including mental health counseling and a teen clinic. Offering a wide range of educational and enrichment activities to support the healthy development of youth and their families, the Center grew from serving 250 children to over 2,700 youth and families annually. Novato Human Needs Center History The Novato Human Needs Center was founded in 1972 when three people (a single mom, local pastor, and small business owner) wanted to help brighten the holidays for underserved neighbors. Volunteers first worked out of a garage collecting holiday gifts and food. Shortly after its first holiday share, the first paid staff and volunteers moved offices to an older house on South Novato Blvd., paying the City of Novato $1 in annual rent. In 1985, following a successful local community-wide fundraising campaign and completion of construction, the new resource Center was opened at 1907 Novato Blvd. The Center grew from assisting 50 families to more than 3,000 of Novato’s low-income children, adults and seniors, providing a full array of critical safety net services. The Novato Teen Clinic offers confidential services in English and Spanish. Our staff is LGBTQIA+ knowledgeable and experienced. North Marin Community Services has been partnering to provide low and no cost health services for teens, adults and families since its opening in 2006. We offer testing for pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV, as well as provide birth control, condoms, mental health counseling, and pelvic exams for those who are experiencing symptoms. Reasons to visit the Novato Teen Clinic: It’s a place you can ask questions that you might not want to ask your parents or friends. To make sure you are safe and your partner is safe. Many STIs have no symptoms, so getting tested is the only way to know. To get the facts about what works and what doesn’t to avoid STIs and pregnancy. Services are free. Teens are screened for depression, anxiety, risk of suicide, and substance abuse. Free mental health services and health education are available for teens who are stressed or feeling down, or who simply want to get the facts about avoiding pregnancy and STIs. Reproductive health care is provided by Marin Community Clinics and behavioral health care and health education is provided by North Marin Community Services. All services are integrated and delivered in a seamless manner. Students in Middle School face unique challenges as they transition from Elementary School to High School. Some youth feel ready for more independence and autonomy, while others still desire the structured and nurturing environment found in Elementary School. Regardless of where your child may be developmentally, these years are critical for keeping them engaged in school. Here at North Marin Community Services, we provide youth with multiple areas of support; from academic support to social and emotional support. We help each middle schooler navigate the adolescent years, thereby preparing them for success in high school, college, and beyond. We support NMCS middle schoolers in academics, help them identify their spark, and in their social/emotional development and development of a growth mindset. We offer a key opportunity to expose students to higher education and career path options and to teach them skills that can unlock doors to future career prospects. During the after school hours, there is time for apprenticeships, guest speakers, college mentoring, and project-based activities that are not always available during a school day focused on the core curriculum. After school programs better prepare middle school youth for high school, college, and careers, while also keeping them on track and engaged in school. We increase students’ social and emotional skills and decrease their likelihood of engaging in risky behaviors through Second Step Curriculum. “Second Step” is a researched based and age-appropriate curriculum. It’s modern, web-based, and responsive to the needs of today’s students and educators. Starting with the self, teens will learn about who they are and their place in their family, community, and in the world. Topics include self-esteem, bullying, peer relationships, emotional management, and substance abuse prevention and to provide an overall foundation for social and school success so they can enter high school ready to learn and succeed. The first step to becoming an NMCS volunteer is to complete an application. Food Pantry: Come once, come twice – no long-term commitment is required! Individuals interested in becoming a Food Pantry volunteer must fill out a short application, and after will receive links to sign up for all available dates. Shifts are available in the morning (8:30 – 10:00), and afternoon (12:30 – 3:30). The morning shift is responsible for unloading and unpacking food deliveries from the SF-Marin Food Bank, and then packaging up an assortment of fresh and packaged food for families. The afternoon shift is responsible for distributing food to participants at our farmer’s market style pantry. The first step in volunteering for the food pantry is to complete a volunteer application. We believe nutritious meals are essential for learning. Children enrolled full day in preschool receive breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack each day. During the school year, school age students receive afternoon snack. During summer months and out-of-school hours, when students do not have access to the free or reduced-price lunch program at their schools, our Food Program provides reliable, healthy, and balanced lunches and PM snacks. Children learn to make healthy food choices and develop eating habits that will last a lifetime. In our commercial-sized kitchen, our chefs create nutritious meals that contain the following five food groups: Fresh fruit Fresh vegetables Fat-free or 1% low fat milk. For children who cannot tolerate milk products, appropriate alternatives, such as calcium-fortified rice milk or oat milk, can be offered. Healthy foods are provided to clients, including produce, dairy, canned and dried foods, and a protein. Please note: our food pantry is currently at capacity, and all new registrations will be placed on a waiting list. Please come in and sign up in advance during our client service hours by filling out a short Food Pantry registration form and to learn about all the services available at NMCS that might help you. Everyone who is eligible is given a regular time slot on Tuesdays to come to pick up their food, which prevents people from waiting in long lines. We provide integrated trauma-informed and culturally-centered services to children, adolescents, families, and adults who would benefit from mental health services and supports. Services are provided in our main clinic at 680 Wilson Ave, at the Novato Teen Clinic, and in the Novato Unified, Shoreline Unified, and Lagunitas School Districts. She is a compassionate and courageous leader, and through building effective teams, has increased access to critical human services, independence for the visually impaired, expanded energy efficient products and services, and increased environmental action. Cheryl has lived and worked in Marin County since 2001 after emigrating from British Columbia/Canada. She holds a Bachelor of Business Administration, with a double major in Marketing and Economics from Simon Fraser University. In 2016, Cheryl led the board of directors and management team through strategic and merger discussions to expand programs and capacity to break the cycle of poverty for underserved families. In 2018, the Novato Youth Center and Novato Human Needs Center successfully merged and renamed to North Marin Community Services (NMCS). NMCS now delivers trauma informed, integrated, and culturally appropriate services to more than 10,000 participants annually. Their whole family approach ensures everyone has access to comprehensive, trauma informed support designed to foster resiliency and strengthen community. Cheryl and her team of 320 staff and volunteers met the increased demand during the COVID-19 pandemic, which impacted the social, economic, and environmental well-being of the most vulnerable people in North Marin. Her team has been on a decade long journey to build a diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace and community. Cheryl is recently certified through Impact Launch’s Radical Transformational Leadership for Social Impact (RTL Impact) and Epoch Education’s Equity Learning in Action Series. NMCS is now operating and governed under the most diverse team in its 50-year history as a merged organization. Cheryl strives for excellence and has received prestigious awards such as YWCA Marin Women’s Hall of Fame honoree 2023, Soroptimist International of Novato 2022 Women of Vision, the Jefferson Silver Award 2021/KPIX and Multiplying Good , KPIX Jefferson Award/January 2020 , Excellence in Leadership 2018/CVNL Heart of Marin , and Pivotal People, Novato Proud/September 2017. Vanshika Nachnani Chief Financial Officer Bio Vanshika Nachnani has been with North Marin Community Services (NMCS) since January 2018. Prior to NMCS, she was with the Novato Youth Center since September 2009 as the Director of Finance and Administration. She has extensive finance and accounting management experience spanning all accounting oversight. Vanshika is a Financial Leader who enjoys working at both a strategic and hands on level with a very collaborative management style. She brings a wealth of non-profit accounting experience. Vanshika manages the financial resources of the organization including accounting, organization-wide budgets, investments and interprets accounting reports to management and board. Vanshika directs and oversees a group of functions for the organization that includes finance office functions, human resources, administrative services, information technology and facilities. Vanshika speaks four languages, certified by the American Council of Teaching Foreign Languages. Vanshika holds a Master’s Degree in Banking and Finance from India. We respect parents as the primary and most important provider of care and nurturing, and we believe parents and teachers are partners in a child’s care and education. Each child’s day will be filled with opportunities to create, explore, and learn problem-solving and personal interaction skills while developing a positive self-concept through both self- and teacher-directed activities. The Program is designed to meet the developmental needs of young children by providing an enriching experience that enhances each child’s cognitive, language, social, emotional, physical, and creative development so that your child will enter Kindergarten ready to learn and succeed in school and beyond. Our staff serve as positive role models and provide care that is supportive, nurturing, warm, and responsive to each child’s individual needs. We will help put your child’s feelings into words and model behaviors for your child. Since 2017, our Preschool program has been awarded “Mastering High Quality Standards” by Marin Quality Counts.
