He holds a dual BM from Berklee College of Music in Vocal Performance and Songwriting, and an MM in Jazz Studies (Voice) from the University of North Texas. His deepest passion as a voice teacher lies in researching and implementing methods for restructuring the voice when vocal deficiencies are present. He has investigated the techniques of the late Cornelius Reid, studied under Dr. Stephen Austin and Kathryn Wright, and trained with R&B singer Marlon Saunders — a background vocalist for Sting and the late Michael Jackson — as well as acclaimed jazz educator Paris Rutherford. He is committed to offering students not only technical development, but also practical guidance for navigating careers in the music industry. Upon completing his MM in 2010, Christopher co-founded The Hip-Hop Orchestra Experience (THHOE), a California-based 501(c)(3) performing arts nonprofit, where he serves as executive director. For over 15 years, THHOE has collaborated with world-renowned ensembles including musicians from the San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Ballet, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Zapopán Chamber Orchestra (Guadalajara, Mexico), Hong Kong New Music Ensemble (HK, China), Flint Symphony (MI), and Sheboygan Symphony (WI). He has produced two films: Method Sampling: How to Build the Future Together — winner of the DTLA Film Festival (2023) and streaming on Voice of America — and The Hip-Hop Orchestra Experience PBS concert film, now streaming on PBS, Amazon Prime and Marquee TV , with linear broadcasts reaching over 50 million households across Central and Eastern Europe and Greece. Christopher is currently producing THHOE's third film, American Remix , with principal photography taking place in Seoul, Korea. Christopher serves on the board of directors of Western Arts Alliance, the premier booking conference for the performing arts on the West Coast. He also serves as an adjunct professor at Diablo Valley College, teaching the History of Hip-Hop Music and Culture. Clif Payne - voice (online only) Clif's strength as a teacher is rooted in his musical diversity, experience, patience, encouragement and passion for sharing what he has learned in performance and study to his students. "Sing not just to be heard, but to be heartfelt and believed. Sing to inspire!" Clif teaches from his years of experience as a pro singer working alongside the world's finest performers. As an Los Angeles resident, he studied voice with Seth Riggs (voice teacher to Michael Jackson and others) vocal coach assistant Chip Hand and Roger Burnley (vocal coach to James Torme). In the San Francisco Bay Area, Clif studied voice with Jane Sharpe. He studied music and performance with David Baker and Margaret Strong at Bloomington's Indiana University. Clif has performed with Freda Payne, Evelyn "Champagne" King, Norman Connors, Bobby McFerrin, Ellis Hall, Sheena Easton, American Idol judge & vocal coach Peggy Blu, Four Play drummer Harvey Mason, jazz fusionists Hiroshima and former Chicago vocalist Bill Champlin. Clif has opened for Dan Siegel, Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis and Dionne Warwick. Clif was born in the Harlem Sugar Hill area of Harlem and now resides in the San Francisco Bay Area. His eclectic vocals span the genres of jazz, R&B, gospel, blues, rock, folk, pop and classical. dana salzman - voice (online only) Pianist, singer, composer, producer and musical director Dana Salzman creates funky, flavorful tunes that re-imagine jazz, funk, hip-hop, soul, Latin and R&B music and illuminate her sultry voice, fine-tuned piano technique and talent for composition and arrangement. An enthusiastic collaborator and mistress of improvisation, she blends together fresh beats and lyrics into vivid arrangements that ignite all five senses and explore the intense dimensions of raw human emotion. Salzman began to study piano at age four with her mother (an internationally renowned classical piano teacher) and then went on to earn a degree from the New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City. Salzman has had the opportunity to work closely with many celebrated musicians and songwriters during her career, including Mike Marshall (Timex Social Club), Samuelle Prater (Club Neaveau), Tony Flores (Marvin Gaye,. Bobby Womack), Pete Escovedo, Rappin 4Tay, Valerie Troutt, Tiffany Austin, and more. Now based in Oakland, CA, Salzman does all her own production, writing and arranging and is also an in-demand piano and voice teacher. MINDY KNIGHT (MK) - Voice, piano Mindy Knight has been singing with and around others since age 11. After graduating from the University of North Texas with a Vocal Degree, the Bay Area became home. MK has been teaching singing and piano lessons for almost ten years. For MK, musicianship is inherent in every person, and the only question to answer is really the “How”. Playing piano is a wonderful way to open to the world of sound. MK is proud to offer beginners and mid-range learners an easy way to learn piano, starting with a playing-based method, and graduating to reading and theory models as the student gains proficiency. MK has performed in nearly every variety of ensemble and solo act, including Choral/Church Ensembles, Jazz (think Wine Bar/Speakeasy), Musical Theater (Rent, Chicago, Wicked), and most recently as an independent songwriter. MK has sung in Hungary, Ghana, New York, Texas, New Mexico, and of course various places in California. As an indie musician, has played in the Bay Area at Golden Bull, Bottom of The Hill, Hemlock (RIP), The Hotel Utah, Bazaar Cafe, Milk Bar, The Lost Church, Pop’s, and Brick & Mortar, to name a few. Currently MK is focusing on writing music for their band and hoping to release it this year! Please carefully read the following rules and policies, as they outline how our school operates and the guidelines we abide by. Understanding these policies ensures a smooth and productive experience for all our students, parents, and staff. Your cooperation is essential in maintaining a positive and effective learning environment at Notes Music Academy [NMA]. Thank you for your attention and commitment to these guidelines. Tuition Students who pay by credit card or ACH payments will be automatically enrolled in a recurring payment plan for each successive month’s lessons. On the 16th of each month, you will receive an email reminder that your credit card will be charged on the 1st of the following month. A $10 late fee will be assessed for any payments received after the 5th of the month. If parents wish to discontinue lessons for the next month, they must notify NMA by the 25th of the current month. If NMA does not receive notification by the 25th, the account will be automatically charged on the 1st for that month’s lessons. Lessons will continue weekly (excluding school closures) and will be charged monthly until canceled via email notification. Notifications can be sent by email to
[email protected]. The number of lessons billed is based on the number of lessons scheduled for your designated day in that month (e.g., if your lesson day is Tuesday and there are four Tuesdays in a month, you will be billed for four lessons; if there are five Tuesdays, you will be billed for five). Tuition payments exclude holiday closings, ensuring you are not charged for days when we are closed. Lessons for new students are prorated based on their start date and the remaining number of lessons in the month. NMA accepts credit card payments (Visa/MasterCard, American Express, and Discover) or ACH payments. A 3% processing fee applies to all credit card transactions. There is no processing fee charged for ACH payments (ACH is the recommended payment method). Card or bank information must be added through the MyMusicStaff portal or sign up form, and all students are required to have a payment method on file. Please note that there are no refunds under any circumstances. Attendance Each calendar year (Jan. 1st to Dec. 31st), students are allowed a total of 6 excused absences. An absence is considered excused if the student or parent cancels the lesson through the MyMusicStaff portal with at least 24 hours notice before the lesson's start time. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours notice will result in the absence being considered unexcused, and the lesson will be forfeited. Excused absences are eligible only for makeup lesson credits; no refunds will be provided. Absences without proper notification will not qualify for makeups or refunds. At the discretion of NMA, unexcused absences may be awarded a makeup lesson In the event of unexpected illness or emergency. Makeup lesson credits must be used within 60 days of the original lesson date and will expire thereafter. NMA does not guarantee that the makeup lesson will be with the student's regular instructor, and lessons will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Makeup lesson times are not pre-scheduled and will be offered as random time slots become available. It is the student's responsibility to monitor the schedule and book an open slot that fits their availability. Slots can be scheduled up to 3 hours before the lesson time. Lessons that start late due to the student's tardiness will still end at the scheduled time. If a student is more than 15 minutes late for their lesson, it will be considered an unexcused absence, and the lesson will be forfeited. Instructor Absences Many of our instructors are professional musicians, and there may be occasions when they are unable to attend their lessons. In such cases, a substitute instructor will be provided without prior notice, and lessons will proceed as scheduled. If NMA cannot arrange a substitute teacher, the lesson will be canceled, and a refund credit for that single lesson will be applied to the student's account for the following month's tuition. The refund credit will be calculated as the cost of that month's tuition (excluding transaction fees) divided by the number of lessons in the month. Student Conduct At our music school, we are committed to maintaining a positive and productive learning environment. We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone who is disruptive, disrespectful, or does not adhere to our policies. This includes inappropriate language, aggressive behavior, repeated tardiness, or any conduct that disrupts the learning experience. By enrolling, students and parents agree to uphold these standards to ensure a harmonious experience for all. Failure to meet these expectations may result in lesson cancellations without a refund. Students are permitted to use designated practice rooms and performance spaces only during scheduled lesson times or authorized practice sessions, ensuring respect for shared resources. Students are responsible for the care and maintenance of their instruments brought to the school, and instruments provided by the school must be treated with equal care. Learning an instrument can be challenging, but the reward—those moments when something finally clicks or understanding something that gives you goosebumps—is pure magic.
