We believe that both people and dogs are happiest when the dog is a well-behaved family member who knows what is expected of them. We have found that training integrates better into family life if an owner is the one who trains the dog, rather than having this done by a professional trainer. Both purebred and mixed breed dogs are welcome at all our classes.    ODTC offers a complete training program divided into different levels.  In our group classes, your dog will learn to follow your commands even with the distractions of other dogs and people.  Start with Puppy class or our Beginning Obedience class, depending on the age of your dog, and continue through Intermediate and Advanced (Off-Leash Control) classes. Many people even choose to continue their obedience training after the basics, and enter their dogs in Obedience Trials or prepare for Rally, Agility or Scent Work.   Classes are held in our indoor training facility, which is fully matted, and has mirrors.   You don't need to be a member to take our classes, but only registered students, club member dogs, and service dogs are allowed into our training facility.  We are located near Point Isabel Dog Park, close to the Albany/El Cerrito/Richmond border.    Our training hall is located at: 5327 Jacuzzi Street Building 3, Suite E1 Richmond, CA 94804 MAP AND DIRECTIONS Upcoming Events  MATCHES (9-11 AM) May 23, 2026 - Meiklejohn Lawn, CSU Hayward  June 13, 2026 - Music Lawn, CSU Hayward July 19, 2026 - Music Lawn, CSU Hayward  August 23, 2026 - Music Lawn, CSU Hayward September 12, 2026 - Music Lawn, CSU Hayward October 17, 2026 - Music Lawn, CSU Hayward November 15, 2026 - Music Lawn, CSU Hayward MEMBER MEETINGS June 21, 2026-  3PM,  ZOOM  July 19, 2026 - In Person Awards Event - details TBD TRIALS May 24, 2026- ODTC Obedience & Rally Trials, CSU Hayward.  Judging Program is available here FIND OTHER AKC TRIALS & EVENTS Frequently Asked Questions When should I start training my puppy?  You can start teaching a puppy good habits from the day you bring them home, however, formal training in puppy class should start after the second set of vaccines is given, generally around 12 weeks. My dog is just a pet. Why do they need training?  The better behaved a dog is, the more likely that they will be welcomed in many situations. We offer dog training classes that are geared towards teaching the pet dog basic skills such as not jumping up on your guests when you answer the door, standing patiently and politely while the vet does their annual exam, and sitting quietly at your side when you stop to chat with a neighbor while on your daily walk. She and her German Shepherd Dogs have earned numerous AKC titles, including: Obedience Trial Champion (OTCH2), Champion Tracker (CT), and Obedience Grand Master (OGM). Her dogs have ranked #1 German Shepherd Dog in AKC Obedience  (based on OTCH points) and have competed at the AKC National Obedience Championship (NOC) multiple times, finishing in the top 20 dogs nationally. In 2012, her dog Dante won German Shepherd Dog Club of America's Obedience Victor (OV) and Top Scoring Obedience Dog of the Year -- the only rescue dog from an animal shelter ever to achieve these prestigious awards. Lizanne's training philosophy is founded on relationship-based training. Trainers need to have a large tool box of training techniques. No tool or method works for all dogs, or even for the same dog all the time. Ultimately, what's most important is to read your dog in the moment and tailor your response based on your dog's individual training needs and progression. This requires having a trusting relationship and honest communication style with your dog. This is essential no matter what your goals are -- whether it's having a well-mannered canine companion at home or pursuing a variety of dog activities together. At fourteen months Chloe had been surrendered twice from different families; her energy and vet bills were too much of a burden for either family to keep her. Little did we know that Chloe would change our lives more than any other event thus far.  She was reactive and energetic; nervous and attentive; bright and aware. She had very little confidence. She was unsure of everything, especially of me. We hired a behaviorist who told us that if we decided to keep her, that she would be a long term project. The next day I returned her to the SPCA. The following morning, feeling the emptiness of the night without Chloe's warmth and energy, we got her back. She was so very happy to see us. We sought more help with some of the best pet dog and sport dog trainers we could find. Each trainer told me that I would have to become a dog trainer to help her. That is how my journey began. I have volunteered with the Oakland Dog Training Club helping Lynn Kosmakos with the beginning obedience class every week since 2012. I've worked with dog trainers from many different disciplines such as barn hunt, scent work, AKC Obedience, and protection sports. The wonderful thing about dog training is that there is so much to learn and I have continued my training at the Michael Ellis School for Dog Training and attend seminars to keep my skills active and ready for more dog training. It was once commented that I really like working instinct sports with my dogs. Instinct sports helped us build Chloe's confidence and as a result we learned to trust each other. My other dog, Mushroom, is a specialty high-drive sport-mixed dog. You'll find us hiking in the hills or playing on the beach where good dogs are allowed. I am thankful for the Oakland Dog Training Club (ODTC) because of our commitment to the dogs we love. Our members actively compete in AKC events at the highest levels, yet know the importance and value of pet dog training to the community. Another GSD soon followed and both dogs had long obedience trial careers and earned their TDXs. Another GSD soon followed and both dogs had long obedience trial careers and earned their TDXs. Since those early days I have raised 2 kids, now in their 30’s, each living with a rescue dog, and my GSD life has continued as a breed mainstay. Along the way, I loved a 25 pound poodle mix I rescued off the streets of San Jose (being actively pursued by a pack of dogs!), trained and showed an English Setter in conformation and tracking (both of which he loved, good thing because he HATED obedience), 3 greyhounds (we dabbled in lure coursing but excelled in beach running!), my first border collie and first of my herding triple champions.  I now live with border collies, Race and Tessa, and GSD, Yancy. Yancy is the newest member of the clan who so far has earned her BN, CGC, TKN, RN, and the AKC herding test titles. She is actively training for her CD, CDX, RA, herding for trials, and tracking. Race is working towards finishing his UD and RA, and he and Tessa are both triple herding champions on sheep, cattle and ducks. All serve as partners in my dog training business. I am an AKC and AHBA herding judge and trainer, actively competing in all herding venues with GSDs, BCs, and other herding breeds I train and handle. I am also an AKC CGC and Trick Dog Trainer and Evaluator. I consider myself a balanced, motivational trainer and believe in bringing out the best in your human to canine relationship through the training of skills for your dog and better handling for you as you perfect those skills and teamwork. Obedience and rally should not be boring or mundane, but active, fun, adventurous, and enjoyable for both species! The matches are held outdoors on the Cal State East Bay (formerly Cal State Hayward) campus, at the Music Peristyle lawn.  Parking is in lot L.  The cost per match is $10 per handler. (A handler can work more than one of their own dogs at the same match, for $10 total.) Please pay by cash or check made out to "ODTC". An appointed club member will collect payments on site. Unlike regular AKC events, for our Members' Training Practice Matches there is no limit on the number of participants and no paperwork to fill out in advance. So you don't need to plan ahead. Simply show up if you are interested in working your dogs that day, rain or shine. Several obedience rings are set up on the lawn using tape dividers. There is usually at least one ring each for Novice, Open, and Utility, Members practicing Open and Utility should bring their own jumps. Please arrive a bit early to help unload and set up the rings. Members who are training for the same level take turns being the judge and giving each other tips. Some members may want to do a complete run-through, while others may just want to practice on a couple of specific things. It is best to have a training plan in mind for you and your dog in advance, and then let your co-members know what you want to work on and what sort of feedback you'd like from them when you enter the ring. Members need to be able to leave their dogs in a safe place when they are not working their own dogs and are helping other members train theirs. Members typically set up crates, etc. to the side of the rings.  Dogs learn best when they've trained in a variety of environments, so if you're currently working your dog mostly in your own yard or in our indoor Training Hall, we'd like to encourage you to come out and join us at a Members' Match. These matches provide a wonderful outdoor training environment. The grassy lawn and people walking by on campus provide a good level of distraction, while still allowing us to work our dogs in a relatively controlled environment.  A Chance to Give Back Have you been to an AKC workshop, match, trial, or test? Most of the time if you're there competing, you're focused on your dog and what you need to do as a team. But take a moment to reflect on everything that's happening around you and that needs to be done to make one of those events a reality. There are an awful lot of people who have helped - everything from advertising for the event, arranging the location, inviting judges, recruiting stewards, administering entry forms and fees, setting up and taking down rings and tables, providing refreshments, purchasing ribbons and prizes, reporting results to AKC, etc., etc. These events do not just happen on their own. It takes a committed group of club members to pull them off successfully. Connection Regular meetings for input on the direction of the club Educational presentations and demonstrations (search & rescue, police dog ) Winter holiday party Members are eligible to participate in ODTC's online discussion forum. This venue gives members an opportunity to ask questions, get training tips, and find out the latest about what's going on with the club Perhaps the biggest benefit of becoming an ODTC member is the friendships that are formed. ODTC provides many opportunities to interact with other dogs and handlers like you who are dedicated to dog training. Many members get to know each other at club events, and then spend time socializing together outside of regular club activities.   Recognition Let's face it - dog training isn't always easy. There are peaks and valleys along the way. And sometimes, when you thought you and your dog could never reach the next level, you both surprise each other. Those moments are enough to bring tears to your eyes! You and your dog's accomplishments deserve to be recognized.  ODTC supports its members by recognizing the hard work of both you and your dogs. In addition to the "Brags" column in the Woofs and Waggers Newsletter, ODTC presents members with an inscribed plaque recognizing new titles you and your dog won that year. These awards are traditionally handed out at the June Membership meeting so we can acknowledge as a group the many achievements of our members. You can start teaching a puppy good habits from the day you bring him or her home. However formal training should start after the second set of vaccines is given, generally around 10 - 12 weeks. Puppies do mature at different rates; so if you are unsure if your puppy is ready for a formal class, request an evaluation by one of our instructors. Is training a waste of time if my dog is already an adult? It is never too late to start (or continue) training a dog. Dogs are capable of, and usually enjoy, learning new behaviors at any age. It may take a little longer with an adult dog, but the results are worth it. You'll both be happier! My dog is just a pet. Why does he need training? Every dog deserves to have some basic obedience skills. Oakland Dog Training Club has classes that are geared towards teaching the pet dog basic skills such as not jumping up on your guests when you answer the door, allowing you (or the groomer) to clip his toenails, standing patiently and politely while the vet does her annual exam, sitting quietly at your side when you stop to chat with a neighbor while on your daily walk. I just adopted a Pit Bull mix. Will he be allowed to attend a training class? Most definitely. Oakland Dog Training Club does not discriminate against any breed. In fact, while it is a good idea for any dog to learn basic obedience, it is a great idea for a Pit Bull or other breed with a bad reputation. The better behaved a dog is the more likely that he will be welcomed in many situations. I have a mixed breed dog. Can I take your classes? All dogs are welcome at Oakland Dog Training Club. Whether you just want some basic obedience skills or you plan on competing with your dog in the AKC's new Mixed Breed Program we have a class for you!  I am not planning on competing and it seems like a lot of your classes are for serious competitors. Are your classes appropriate for pet dogs? Oakland Dog Training Club offers classes for all levels of interest. Our puppy, beginning and intermediate classes are taught with the person and dog who are not going on to competition in mind. Such things as socialization, basic obedience and manners are stressed in these classes. However, many of our attendees in these classes discover how much fun they have training their dog and end up going on to compete, or simply take our classes geared for competition for fun, in order to keep working with their dogs. My dog is in heat; can I bring her to training classes? Bitches in heat are not allowed in the training hall with or without panties during classes or during personal hall rental time. Any bitch showing either a swollen vulva with or without discharge at the beginning of her heat cycle may not attend classes or be in the training hall for any reason. Being in heat is defined from the first day of discharge to the point when the vulva is reduced back to normal size.  The average heat cycle lasts about three weeks (21 days) but can be longer for some bitches. Students whose bitches come into heat, either prior to or during a prepaid class session, will be given the choice of auditing any missed classes or will be given a voucher( by the instructor) to be redeemed for any future classes/sessions. Students are solely responsible for keeping track of their vouchers and/or classes missed.   I just want to do agility (or flyball or other dog-sport) with my dog. Why do I need basic obedience? Basic obedience skills are at the foundation of any dog sport. Working with your dog on basic obedience will strengthen the bond you have with your dog, and prepare them to work with you. How long does it take to train a dog? Classes at Oakland Dog training Club are 6 or 7 weeks per session, and give you communication skills to work with at home, but be aware that training is an on-going process. Regular and consistent practice and follow through will accelerate your dog's success. It's also important to realize that dogs mature mentally at different rates, so reliability will be affected by adolescent curiosity and exuberance. Our curriculum has classes to take a pet dog from puppy through off leash manners. Once you discover how much fun training and working with your dog is you may want to continue on with classes for performance obedience, Rally, and dog sports, such as Agility, whether or not you choose to actually compete in these sports. Dogs whose owners get involved with dog sports lead active, athletic lives and build strong partnerships with their trainers that carry over to trust and reliability in all walks of life. My dog is 'aggressive'. Are the classes at ODTC appropriate to 'fix' his problems? Giving a dog a foundation in basic obedience can help with some behavior issues, and our classes can help you learn behavior modification techniques that may help solve behavior problems. However, not all behavior problems can be solved in a group class, and may need to be referred to a behavior specialist. Can I come and watch a class before enrolling? Certainly!  Check our current class schedule come and observe a class. However, humans only, please. Do I need to be a member to take classes? You don't need to be a member to take our classes, but only registered students, club member dogs, and service dogs are allowed into our training facility. What is a Canine Good Citizen test and who is eligible to take it? The American Kennel Club (AKC) has a program called the Canine Good Citizen program, designed to encourage and reward dog owners who have trained their dogs to have good manners, and be responsive to their owners. More information is available on their web page http://www.akc.org/events/cgc/program.cfm. We recently adopted a rescue dog for our school age children. Lately the dog has started growling at the kids when they corner him while roughhousing. Although we can't believe our own dog would ever bite any of us, should we be concerned? And what should we do? You definitely should be concerned. Any dog is capable of biting, given enough provocation, and most dog bites actually take place in the home. Your family and your dog would benefit greatly from one of our training classes where you will teach your dog basic commands. As you progress through the class, your dog will learn to look to you for leadership, making it easier for you to maintain a calm atmosphere at home. Trained dogs are more relaxed and more attentive to people. It is equally important to teach your children safe ways of behaving around dogs, so that they don't mistakenly push your dog into unwanted behaviors. When we are out on a walk, my dog is friendly to any adults we meet, but when we see children, he backs up and then barks at them. I don't know what to do to change his behavior. Your dog's backing up and barking shows that he is afraid of children and is barking to try to make them go away. Perhaps he is unaccustomed to children and is reacting with suspicion, a normal response to something unfamiliar. Or he may have had negative experiences with children in the past. Either way, he is showing fear. Dogs that are fearful benefit greatly from training, as the training process helps them trust their owners and enhances their self confidence; this reduces their fearfulness in new situations. A training class is especially helpful as the dog learns to focus on his owner in spite of the distraction of other people and other dogs. At the same time, the class instructor can suggest ways to familiarize your dog to children in a positive way, so that your dog learns that children are safe. Seeking behavior is taught, using food, then transitioned to the target odors used in competition. Dogs and handlers gain experience in container searches and an alert behavior. This class is limited to 5 dogs.  Obedience Beginning - For dogs 6 months and older. Dogs are introduced to obedience commands such as Come, Sit, Down, Stay and Heel. The instructor is available to answer specific dog behavior questions and help you deal with problems such as barking, chewing and pulling on the leash.   Intermediate - For dogs who are promoted from Beginning training. In this class the trainer will polish basic obedience skills, practice hand signals and other advanced exercises, and prepare for off-leash control.  Novice -  Novice (and for many competitors, Beginning Novice), is the entry class into the sport of Obedience. This class is for handler/dog teams working at the Novice level. Perhaps you are working with your first Novice dog or even your 10th, this skills class will focus on the skills necessary to earn the BN and CD titles. Obedience trainers are people who not only want to improve their dogs’ skills but understand that this improvement starts with our own handling.  If you are new to this level, then your dog must have completed an Intermediate level obedience class or equivalent; and be able to work around other dogs and people without undue barking, lunging, or fearful behavior.    Heeling Rehab - This class is for handlers who struggle to achieve qualifying heeling that they can be proud of in obedience and rally competition. Each week’s class will include work on (1) engagement and motivation; (2) achieving and holding position—both stationary and in motion; and (3) a component of heeling (turns, pace, halts). A variety of games and drills will be used to build knowledge and confidence while injecting some enjoyment into improving this complicated skill. Individual problems will be addressed.   "Work at your Level" Open/Utility Skills - This class is for handlers who would like to teach their dogs beginning Open and Utility skills as well as for handlers whose dogs are already familiar with components of the advanced exercises. Each student’s needs will be addressed on an individual basis. Each week will focus on one exercise from Open and one from Utility.  Once a Month Obedience Run-Throughs - Practice your competition skills at any level of Obedience. Each handler/dog team is assigned a specific time for ring work with instruction.  Registration will open 2 weeks prior to the class and will close on the Tuesday before the class.  Rally Obedience Rally I -  For handler/dog teams working at the Novice through Advanced levels of Rally. You can be brand new to the sport of Rally or can be working on your Advanced title with your third rally dog, or anywhere in between. If you are brand new to rally training and competition, then you and your dog must have completed an Intermediate level obedience class or equivalent. Your dog should also be controlled enough to be able to work around other dogs and people without undue barking, lunging, or fearful behavior.  This class is designed to teach rally skills and improve your overall obedience skills with your dog. Many obedience competitors enjoy teaching their dogs rally skills to better their obedience and in turn, rally competitors will see their rally teamwork improve by working on their dogs’ obedience skills. And while we may do run-throughs occasionally, please note that this is not designed to be a Rally Run-Through course, but is a skills class. Rally II -  For handler/dog teams working on their Excellent and Masters levels. This class is designed to teach and practice the more advanced rally skills at these levels as well as to improve your overall handling and obedience skills with your dog. And while we may do run-throughs occasionally, please note that this is not designed to be a Rally Run-Through course, but is a skills class focusing on the variety of higher level rally signs. Once a Month Rally Run-Throughs - Practice your competition skills at any level of Rally. Each handler/dog team is assigned a specific time for ring work with instruction.  Registration will open 2 weeks prior to the class and will close on the Tuesday before the class  Small Dog Obedience Dogs 6 months and older, who weigh 20 pounds or less.  Dogs are introduced to obedience commands such as Come, Sit, Down, Stay and Heel. The instructor is available to answer specific dog behavior questions and help you deal with problems such as barking, chewing and pulling on the leash. This class is limited to 10 dogs.  AKC Ring Ready Obedience Ring Ready AKC Obedience  -  Class focus is practicing and polishing skills needed to successfully compete in AKC Obedience. Not all exercises will be covered every class. Students are those preparing for AKC Obedience competition who have signed a waiver with ODTC. Dogs must already have 'pet manner' skills (or higher) and be able to work in a group setting without being aggressive or disrupting other students or dogs.
