The wait list will be closed for approximately 90 days. A public notice will be provided when the wait list will reopen by bedroom size. The public housing program provides decent and safe rental housing for eligible low-income families. The Omaha Housing Authority owns and manages 28 different public housing properties. Our properties come in all sizes and types, from scattered single-family houses to high rise apartments for elderly families. Residents of public housing have the choice of paying flat rent (listed below) or income-based rent. Applicants may qualify for all or some of the following property types: Senior Housing Elderly (age 62+) and near elderly (age 50-61) families, apartment sizes ranging from studios to 2 bedrooms. Past Finding of Ineligibility or Past Withdrawal: The applicant/household must not have applied and been determined ineligible for housing assistance through OHA or withdrawn from the waiting list within the past six months. Background Check: Applicants will be denied if they have ever been convicted of the manufacture of methamphetamine on the premises of any federally-assisted housing project, are subject to a lifetime sex offender registry requirement or currently banned/barred from OHA property. Other criminal records during the past five years are reviewed based on time frame and type of convictions to determine eligibility. The opening and closing dates of the Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) waiting list is announced in the Omaha World-Herald, El Perico, the Omaha Star, and on OHA’s website at least 7 days prior to when the applications will be taken. Anyone interested in a voucher can go to OHA’s portal at my.portal.ohauthority.org to fill out a pre-application and select the HCV wait list. Once the time period for taking pre-applications for the wait list closes, a computerized lottery system will randomly choose a predetermined number of pre-applicants to fill out the full application. 1,500 will be selected for the 2023 lottery. What do I need to bring to my Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) appointment? Picture ID Social Security cards or proof of Social Security numbers for all members of your household Birth certificates (all members under 18) Documentation of any income and assets Proof of citizenship or eligible immigration status Proof of custody of children such as a court order, guardianship, or foster care If applicable please provide: Disability or handicap verification Marriage certificate Divorce decree What happens after my appointment? Everyone must pass a criminal background check, so the background checks are requested immediately after your appointment.
