At Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek, we can provide you with the surgical procedure you need to maintain or restore your oral health. When it comes to dentistry, only certain dentists perform surgical procedures. Whether you are looking for a new dentist or are currently under the care of one and need more intensive procedures, we welcome your call. Our dentist can examine you, give you an opinion regarding whether or not you need oral surgery, what procedure will benefit you, and what you can expect from the process. Feel free to ask as many questions as you need in order to feel prepared and comfortable. In the meantime, here are a few frequently asked questions we hear in our 94596 dentist office. Why do people get oral surgery? There are three main reasons that a surgical procedure could be necessary. The first is your health. Tooth decay is incredibly common, and if you receive regular dental care, it is easy to catch and treat before it causes discomfort or spreads. Unfortunately, too many people do not visit the dentist on a regular basis, and this can allow infections to set in. Occasionally, the decay becomes so bad, the tooth has to be removed. Other times, it can be saved with a root canal, but regardless, immediate dental care is necessary to stop the discomfort. It may also be necessary for Our dentist to perform oral surgery to correct a problem with your gums. If you have gum disease and suffer from gum recession, you could need a surgical gum graft, for example. The second reason we perform oral surgery is to remove wisdom teeth. While they do not always pose an immediate health risk, they can grow in impacted and cause discomfort. Removing them can prevent future infections and stop your wisdom teeth from pushing your other teeth forward. Lastly, our Walnut Creek patients receive oral surgery for cosmetic reasons. Primarily, this is to replace missing teeth with dental implants. An implant is the most secure and durable solution for tooth loss, because it is the only solution that replaces the root in addition to the tooth. To do so, Our dentist implants a titanium post under the gums and secures it to the jaw bone. Titanium is used because it is a strong metal that the body treats like natural matter. As a result, the implant and jaw bone will fuse together through the process of osseointegration. This takes a few months, but once complete, a new root system is developed, and when the new tooth is attached, it will be as secure as a natural one. To learn more about this process, call (510) 616-9573 and schedule an appointment with our 94596 dental office. Is oral surgery used with orthodontics? Yes, when an orthodontist straightens teeth, one of the issues they address is overcrowding. There are certain procedures that can create space in the mouth, and one of them is to extract teeth. While not always necessary, some orthodontists will make a recommendation to have one or several teeth removed as part of the treatment process. An orthodontist is also concerned about jaw alignment. Overbites and underbites can often be treated non-invasively. However, in severe cases, oral surgery is necessary to change the position of the jaw. Whether or not you will need oral surgery as part of your orthodontic treatment is something to discuss during your initial consultation. How do I prepare for oral surgery? At Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek, we will do whatever we can to keep you comfortable during your procedure, and part of that is helping you to be prepared. We believe in patient education and will go over the procedure with you step by step. Since each patient and oral surgery is unique, our overview here is more generic in nature, and Our dentist will want to take time with you individually. Typically, however, you will want to avoid eating food for a few hours (possibly starting the night before). This is standard protocol when receiving anesthesia. We also recommend that you purchase some ice packs and place them in the freezer. You should plan ahead and buy soft foods, plenty of water, and anything you need to relax and stay comfortable, which should certainly include ibuprofen. Can you provide me with oral surgery if I am currently being treated by another dentist? Yes, we can. When you visit our Walnut Creek dental office, let us know if you are being treated by a dentist and if they mentioned you needing oral surgery. Not everyone performs surgery, so if you want to remain in their care after the procedure has been completed, you certainly can. Otherwise, we welcome you as a new patient to our practice. What is the recovery like from oral surgery? This really depends on the type of surgery being performed. As a general rule, you can expect there to be some level of bleeding that is temporary and can be controlled with the gauze that we give you. You can also expect there to be swelling. This is where most of the discomfort comes from. To control it, you will want to place an icepack on your face for 15 minutes at a time, rest for 15 minutes and then use it again. Just be careful not to irritate your skin, and use a light cloth if you need to. Simultaneously, you should use ibuprofen to keep the swelling and discomfort at minimum. The ice is typically only used for a day or two where the ibuprofen may be needed for a week or so. At Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek, we may also give you antibiotics to take in order to prevent an infection. When it comes to food, you will want to stick with things that are soft and either do not require chewing (like soup) or can be chewed very easily (like steamed vegetables). Buying these items ahead of time will make your recovery easier. Just remember to take it easy and not to push yourself. It is best to follow Our dentist instructions than to risk irritating your surgical site. To find out if you need oral surgery or to discuss a surgical procedure in greater detail, call (510) 616-9573 and schedule a consultation. We will be happy to answer any questions you have and set you on the road to surgery and a full recovery. At Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek, we offer sedation dentistry for patients living in and around the Walnut Creek area. We understand that for millions of adults, visiting the dentist can be an overwhelming or frightening experience due to dental anxiety. This common condition typically starts by a negative experience or becoming fearful of the general idea of dentistry. While common, you do not have to be concerned about visiting our dentist office because we can ensure your comfort the entire time. When you schedule an appointment with Our dentist, let us know if you have dental anxiety so that we can prepare for your visit accordingly. For many people, the actual procedure is not uncomfortable but it is the anxiety and worry that causes angst. With this in mind, we often prescribe an oral sedative or laughing gas that can be administered prior to the appointment to help a person relax. While this is not a pain killer, it eases the fear and relaxes the body so that you can remain peaceful while having teeth cleaned, or dental work performed. While the dosage is different, laughing gas can be used on both children and adults so that all of our Walnut Creek patients can remain comfortable. Types of Sedation Dentistry There are various levels and types of sedation. During your consultation Our dentist will discuss the recommended procedure with you along with any anxieties you may have. At that time, a recommendation will be made for the type of sedation you may want to consider. The ultimate decision is up to you based on how you believe you will handle the procedure. In many cases, our CA patients simply need to relax and prefer to use laughing gas in order to do so. It is quick, effective, and wears off when the procedure is finished without impairing any other bodily functions. Some patients use this to relax when getting their teeth cleaned since there is no actual pain associated with the treatment. When a cavity is being treated or other minor dental work performed, patients throughout the 94596 area often prefer to use a combination of laughing gas and localized pain medication. After numbing the surface of the gums, we can inject pain medication that numbs the area that is being worked on. As a sedation dentist, this is an effective tool for us to prevent and eliminate any discomfort. We can administer as much medication as is necessary throughout the course of the treatment, and only that specific area will remain numb. The benefit of this type of sedation is how localized it is. For example, if a cavity is being treated on one side of the mouth, the other side will remain fully functional. This way you can eat immediately after the treatment while the numbing effect wears off the other side. If a more intensive procedure is required, patients may prefer IV medication for a more thorough effect. When sedation is administered through this means the numbing effect is more pervasive and not confined to that one specific area of the mouth. It is extremely effective and as a sedation dentist, we find that many of our patients request this type of medication because they want to ensure that they do not feel anything while having dental work performed. If this is the case, the effect can still wear off fairly quickly after the treatment is over, but we do recommend having a friend or family member drive you home just in case. For those needing oral surgery in CA, total sedation may be necessary or preferable. This is often referred to as sleep dentistry because a patient is put to sleep and will not remember anything from the procedure. As a sedation dentist, we find that this is an excellent solution when a patient is getting a full smile makeover. When the majority of teeth are being worked on, the procedure can take a significant amount of time. Our dentist is an expert, but even an expert must do the work with precision and that requires not rushing through the procedure. With that in mind, many of our Walnut Creek patients find it difficult to hold still when the treatment lasts longer than an hour or two. Going to sleep is a much better option because your body will naturally remain still, you will feel comfortable and not remember what took place during the treatment. If this is your preferred method of sedation dentistry, we will monitor you carefully during the treatment and afterwards to ensure that the anesthesia wears off like it should. You will also need to have someone drive you home and may feel slightly sluggish for the remainder of the day. These types of procedures typically call for rest and relaxation anyway, so take it easy at home before resuming normal activity the next day. Getting Started If you live in the 94596 area and are interested in visiting a sedation dentist, call (510) 616-9573 to schedule your appointment. At Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek, we will take the time to get to know you and understand what all of your concerns are prior to making a formal recommendation as to the type of sedation dentistry that you should consider. We will also need to know if you have any other health issues, risks, or are allergic to anything. Typically, if you have responded well to pain medication or sedation in other medical treatments, you will do well with sedation dentistry and not experience any negative side effects. Still, if you have questions or concerns be sure to discuss them with Our dentist. With any type of dental work, it is important to be well informed and make a decision that you feel is best for your health and your goals. As such, we want you to be an informed and educated patient. Thanks to modern technology, if you are afraid of having dental work done or visiting the dentist in general, you no longer have to be. As a sedation dentist, we can ensure that your experience is a positive one. The space created by missing teeth can easily become infected with bacteria, causing other teeth to shift out of place, and making it difficult for people to speak or eat correctly. Our dentist and the staff at Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek are sensitive to the hardship a missing tooth can create. We provide dental implants so that our patients can regain their self-confidence, improve their health, and approach life boldly. Installing implants is a complex procedure and patients throughout the 94596 area trust us to replace their missing teeth due to the stellar reputation of Our dentist. We know that there are multiple dental implant providers to choose from so Our dentist and the staff at Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek are constantly looking for ways to improve the overall experience of our patients. Our office is conveniently located in Walnut Creek and we treat patients throughout California, offering them the opportunity to restore missing teeth in a way that looks natural and beautiful. Facts from the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (aaid.com) More than 30 million Americans are missing all their teeth in one or both jaws< 15 million people in the U.S. have crown and bridge replacements for missing teeth 3 million have implants and that number is growing by 500,000 a year 10% of all US dentists place implants but that is increasing The success rate of implants has been reported in scientific literature as 98% Implants performed by US dentists 5,505,720 (2006) Implants performed by US general dentists 3,103,930 (2006) The dental implants market in the U.S is projected to reach $5 billion by 2018 ‍ Questions to Ask When Selecting an Implant Dentist What treatment options do you use to restore missing teeth? How many implant procedures have you performed? What’s your success rate? What’s your education and training in implant treatment? Which technique* and type of replacement teeth or appliance do you recommend for me, and why? What steps are involved in the process and where and by whom are they performed? What should I expect throughout the process in terms of pain, recovery time, eating, etc.? Will I have teeth throughout the process? What type of anesthesia do you use? What are the risks of the treatment option you’re recommending? What are the benefits? Can you share before-and-after pictures of other patients you have treated? The Process of Installing Implants If one or more of your teeth have fallen out, you may qualify for dental implants as a way to permanently replace the missing teeth. In order to find out, schedule an appointment with our Walnut Creek dentist office by calling (510) 616-9573. Our dentist will examine your mouth and jawbone to determine if the procedure is right for you. Before you can get started, your gums need to be healthy, and your jawbone needs to be strong. If, Our dentist identifies any cavities or signs of gum disease, this will need to be treated first. Once you are cleared for the procedure, the staff at Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek will take an impression of your mouth so that the new teeth can be created in a dental implants lab. Each tooth will be made to match the size and shape of the surrounding teeth along with having a perfect color match. This way your smile will appear completely natural once done. Patients throughout CA are delighted with the results since no one can tell the difference between which teeth are real and which ones are synthetic. Teeth restored with implants can’t get cavities! A replacement tooth, or crown, doesn’t decay like a natural tooth, but you still must brush, floss and care for it and your surrounding natural teeth and gums in the same manner as natural teeth. Regular professional cleanings and dental check-ups also are essential. Walnut Creek Dental Implants The next step in the procedure is to have a metal post implanted under the gum line. This aspect of the procedure is what sets a implant apart from other forms of cosmetic dentistry and Our dentist is a true expert at performing the procedure. The metal post is secured to the jawbone in order to create a durable, synthetic root system that rivals the strength of natural roots with one exception – metal can’t become infected. Over the course of a couple of months, the metal post and jawbone will fuse together. This creates a level of durability that cannot be replicated in any other type of procedure. Afterwards, Our dentist will secure the new synthetic tooth to the metal post at the surface of the gums. The new tooth is attached so securely, that patients can eat their favorite foods, maintain an active lifestyle, play sports, and more, without fear of their tooth becoming loose or falling out. Patients throughout CA enjoy the benefits that come from never having to worry about their tooth again. Patients in the 94596 area, trust Our dentist and the staff at Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek to provide dental implants in a way that is comfortable and functional. With any type of surgical procedure, it is important to visit an expert and by doing so you will reduce your risk of complications or the implants not functioning properly. Our dentist takes the time to make sure that every aspect of the procedure is completed correctly – the first time. Caring for Dental Implants Once implants have been installed, they are extremely easy to care for. We hear from patients throughout Walnut Creek with questions that range from “Do implants come out” and “How do I brush my teeth”. The answer is fairly simple. Since dental prosthetics are installed by creating a synthetic root system, they are durable and secure and will not fall out or become loose. This means you can go play basketball, run in a 10k, and wrestle with your kids – without worrying about your tooth coming out. In order to care for your implants, we advise patients throughout California to brush and floss their teeth throughout the day like they normally would. Additionally, it is important to schedule dental exams and cleanings with Our dentist at least twice a year. The staff at Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek will help to clean your teeth and ensure that they stay healthy. This step is incredibly important because while dental prosthetics cannot become infected themselves, the teeth around them can. If, in the future, you suffer from a severe case of gum disease or a dental abscess, the infection can spread into your jawbone. This puts your implants in jeopardy because in order to stay secure, the jawbone must be in good health. If it becomes infected, your dental implants and all of your teeth will be in jeopardy. If you currently have implants and your teeth start to hurt, call (510) 616-9573 to schedule an appointment immediately. This way we can identify any infection and treat it before it can spread into the jawbone. As long as you follow these simple preventative care steps, your implants and natural teeth should remain in good health. There is 40 years of data behind every implant installed today, with success rates of about 98%. At Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek we often treat patients that have a variety of dental concerns. Some patients visit our Walnut Creek office because their tooth has been broken while others are looking to create a Hollywood smile. Most people are candidates for the procedure as long as their tooth structure and roots are in place. If, however, you have a cavity or gum disease this will need to be treated before the procedure is completed. If you want to learn more about dental veneers, we recommend that you call (510) 616-9573 to schedule an appointment. We are known throughout California as a trusted provider of veneers and can let you know if they will help you to achieve the goals that you have for your smile. What are Dental Veneers? A veneer is a thin shell that is made out of porcelain or ceramic. The shade of the veneer, along with its shape and size will be made to match your surrounding teeth so that it blends in perfectly. How are Dental Veneers Used? We can accomplish a variety of things using dental veneers. By placing them on top of the teeth, we can close gaps, make teeth even in length, cover dark stains and create a uniform looking smile. In this way, veneers can create a smile that rivals the most famous Hollywood stars. In fact, many of them have had this procedure to create the smile you see today. The nice thing is that you don’t have to be famous to improve your smile. You simply need to call (510) 616-9573 and schedule an appointment to see Our dentist. Dental Veneers We also use dental veneers for restorations. When teeth become cracked, chipped or broken, a veneer can be used to restore the tooth to its full functionality. As long as the tooth structure is intact, it is an excellent way to restore the appearance of a tooth while making it possible to eat and speak without feeling any discomfort. The Procedure When patients visit our Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek office, we will take an impression of their teeth so that the veneers can be created in a lab. They will be made to match the size, shape, and color of your teeth so this can take a week or more. In order to have dental veneers placed, Our dentist will first prepare your tooth by removing a portion of the enamel. This is necessary so that the veneer will lay flat and in line with your gum tissue. After the tooth has been prepared, a temporary veneer will be secured using removable glue. While wearing a temporary veneer, it is important to brush your teeth gently and avoid eating any foods that could push it out of place. Since it is secured by removable glue, it can be moved fairly easily. When your permanent veneers are ready, you will come back into our Walnut Creek office so that our dentist can remove the temporary and ensure that the new veneer is a perfect fit. It is typically attached using a water based solution to see how it looks. If any adjustments need to be made, it will be done at this time. Otherwise, the tooth will be cleaned, and the dental veneers will be bonded to the tooth. Patients throughout California love how the results look. They are instant, and you can start flashing your smile right away. After the Procedure Your teeth will typically be sore for a few days after they have been prepared and after the permanent veneers are placed. During this time, you can take pain medication to help you stay comfortable. Patients throughout the 94596 area also benefit from getting rest and using a cold compress to reduce any swelling. Our dentist recommend that patients watch what they eat for a few days and stick with foods that are soft. While there is a short recovery time when getting veneers, the procedure is entirely worth it because in the end you will have a beautiful smile. Benefits of Dental Veneers Patients throughout the Walnut Creek, CA area love how veneers make their teeth look. This procedure is an excellent solution, because veneers can be used to transform your smile into one that looks perfect and beautiful. It does so, while still using your natural teeth, so there is no need for surgery, and the recovery time is reduced. Since the veneers are made to match your other teeth, they will look natural, and no one will be able to tell that you had any cosmetic dentistry work completed. Another benefit is that they are made out of a stain resistant material. This means that your teeth will stay whiter and brighter, even if your favorite beverage is a hot cup of coffee. Our dentist is an expert veneers dentist and can use them to transform your smile. Dental Laminates The Potential Downside of Dental Laminates As with most cosmetic procedures, there can be some discomfort associated with getting dental veneers installed. This is to be expected, however, we do our best to keep patients completely comfortable during the procedure so that you will not experience any pain while the veneers are being placed or your teeth are being prepared. The process can take several weeks so there will be a period where you need to be careful about what you eat and what activities you engage in. In other words, don’t play football after getting temporary veneers placed onto your teeth. You should schedule the procedure for a time where you will be close to home and able to take easy. ‍ Other Services Lumineers Teeth Whitening Cosmetic Smile Makeover Dental Bonding Invisalign® Schedule an Appointment Book Appointment Now Full name Phone number Email address Preferred date* Preferred time Message* Monday to Saturday: 09AM - 10PM Thank you! If so, we invite you to schedule a consultation with our dental office by calling (510) 616-9573. We are conveniently located in Walnut Creek and treat patients throughout the 94596 area. During your first appointment, we will conduct a gentle examination and ask questions in order to understand the full extent of your symptoms and how they are impacting you on a daily basis. It is critical that you see a dentist that appreciates the nature of TMJ and the need for caution during dental care. Otherwise, you could further irritate your jaw and muscles, leading to further discomfort. Temporomandibular joint and muscle disorders (TMJ disorders) are fairly common and can manifest in various ways. There are two temporomandibular joints in your body – one on each side of your head, located in front of your ears. TMJ, as a condition, develops when there is a problem with these joints as they connect the jawbone to the skull, or there are problems with the muscles responsible for chewing. As a TMJ dentist, we find that many people suffer from the condition without knowing that they have it and are, therefore, unable to seek treatment. As a result, we recommend that if you notice any of the symptoms, you call our office at (510) 616-9573 to schedule an examination to ascertain whether you do indeed have TMJ. Symptoms of TMJ TMJ disorder will often manifest itself in ways that appear to be unconnected to the jaw. This may include severe headaches or ear, neck, and face pain. While many people attribute these symptoms to stress or issues with their spine, they are often a result of this condition and can be easily rectified. Other more obvious symptoms include difficulty chewing or biting down, a popping or clicking sound when opening and closing the jaw, and jaw pain. In some cases, TMJ becomes so bad that a person can’t even open their mouth. This is the extreme, and there are almost always signs along the way. By the time people reach this point they have typically been experiencing discomfort in the mornings or throughout the day, difficulty chewing and a lack of mobility with their jaw in general. As a TMJ dentist, we treat patients throughout Walnut Creek, CA that have this condition and recommend coming in at the first sign of irritation so that you can begin treatment before it becomes severe. Causes of TMJ There are several causes of TMJ with many theories yet to be proven. Some claim that posture can be responsible for TMJ as can poor diet, a lack of sleep, and the cartilage disk found at the joint itself. As a TMJ dentist, we find that one of the most common causes of TMJ is clenching or grinding teeth at night. During times of high-stress, many people fail to have a restful nights sleep and take out their frustration by inadvertently clenching their jaw closed or grinding down their teeth while sleeping. This can manifest very early in life, with children even being impacted by teeth grinding. When this takes place, the muscles and joints are forced to remain in a tense position, leading to pain in the joints and muscles the following morning. If this happens only occasionally, you may have a minor headache and feel better the next day. If, however, this is occurring on a nightly basis, TMJ symptoms can begin to manifest and you will begin to feel less and less comfortable. You may want to pay particular attention to whether or not you have a headache or jaw pain after having a stressful day at work or being upset about something. If there is no correlation and the pain is consistent, you should seek treatment immediately by calling (510) 616-9573. Alternatively, if your discomfort it only now and then, you can bring up your concerns at your next dental examination in our Walnut Creek office – as long as it is within the next several months. Treatment Options As a TMJ dentist, we always recommend starting with the least invasive treatment method. It is important to avoid placing any additional stress on your joints so while it may seem tempting to rush into surgical procedures – wait. Start with gently massaging your jaw muscles a couple of times per day. We can show you how to do so without irritating the area or causing a flair up. You may also want to analyze your diet to determine if any particular foods may be too difficult to chew, thereby making the problem worse. At Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek, we often find that patients are increasing their jaw problems by regularly eating foods like tough meat and nuts that require more forceful chewing, placing stress on the muscles and jaw. By switching to soft foods or ones that are easily pulled apart, you may start to feel better immediately. In our TMJ dentist office, we provide a non-invasive solution for helping patients to feel better. Since TMJ is often caused by teeth grinding or clenching, preventing the upper and lower teeth from touching is a fast way to experience relief. In our Walnut Creek office, we can make an impression of your teeth and use it to create a custom night guard for you to wear while sleeping. The night guard is made of a clear and comfortable plastic that surrounds your upper and lower teeth, similar to how a full retainer would function. The main difference is that the upper and lower portion attach and by doing so, prevent your teeth from touching and your jaw from clenching. Very often, our patients report feeling better immediately and every night that you sleep without grinding your teeth, you have the opportunity to increase the quality of your rest and wake up feeling energized – a win/win scenario. Since the night guard is small, easily removed and stored, there are no clunky devices to worry about and you can take it with you when traveling. As a TMJ dentist, we speak with patients throughout the 94596 area that have visited medical providers in California that have recommended solving the problem surgically. At Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek, we invite you to schedule an appointment to have your night guard created so that you can exhaust all options before considering escalating your treatment. Surgery is not something to be taken lightly and should only be performed as a last result. To further discuss our non-invasive solution, call (510) 616-9573 to speak with one of our team members today. ‍ Other Services Family Dentistry Oral Surgery Sedation Dentistry Orthodontics Periodontics Laser Dentistry Dental Cleanings and Exams Dental Checkup Schedule an Appointment Book Appointment Now Full name Phone number Email address Preferred date* Preferred time Message* Monday to Saturday: 09AM - 10PM Thank you! Invisalign® is an excellent way to straighten your teeth and adults of all ages often prefer it over traditional metal braces. If you want to improve the appearance of your smile, call (510) 871-8602 to schedule a consultation and see if Invisalign® is right for you. Teenagers and adults love Invisalign® because it straightens teeth without anyone noticing that you are correcting your smile. People living in the Walnut Creek CA area, trust Our dentist to help them achieve their smile goals in a way that is comfortable and convenient. How does Invisalign® work? As an Invisalign Dentist Our dentist straightens teeth using a series of aligners. First, an impression of your teeth is taken so that a series of aligners can be created in a dental lab. The aligners themselves are made out of a thermoplastic material that is strong and at the same time flexible in order to be comfortable when worn for long periods of time. The material is virtually invisible. The aligners should be worn for 22 hours a day and every two weeks; they need to be switched out with the next one in the series. Over a period of months, the aligners will slowly move teeth into place, making one minor adjustment at a time that is targeted to specific teeth. This helps your teeth to be comfortable as they are moved into position at a manageable pace. Once you are done wearing your aligners, your teeth should be perfectly straight. Benefits of Invisalign® Patients throughout California prefer wearing Invisalign® because of how convenient it is as compared with wearing traditional braces. The aligners are clear so no one can tell you are straightening your teeth. They are only worn for 22 hours a day so you can take them out to eat dinner, go on a date, or make an important presentation at work. You can brush and floss your teeth like normal, and no additional tools are required. There is less of a risk that your teeth will become stained as compared with wearing metal braces that can be difficult to clean. The procedure is more comfortable than metal braces since the aligners move teeth into place slowly and only focus on a few teeth at a time. Aligners are easy to take care of, and you only use the same aligner for a couple of weeks. Invisalign® for Teenagers At Olympic Dental, we know that teenagers have busy lives—between school, sports, music, and social events, the last thing they want is to feel self-conscious about braces. Invisalign® for Teens offers a nearly invisible, comfortable, and flexible way to straighten teeth without the hassle of metal brackets and wires. No worries about food getting stuck, mouth irritation from brackets, or extra care when playing an instrument or competing on the field. Is Your Teen a Candidate? Invisalign® for Teens effectively treats: ✅ Crowded Teeth ✅ Gaps & Spacing ✅ Overbites & Underbites ✅ Crossbites & Open Bites At Olympic Dental, we understand that teenagers don’t want braces to slow them down. With Invisalign®, they can enjoy their favorite activities while working toward a beautiful, straight smile. How do I care for my aligners? Our dentist recommends that patients remove their aligner and rinse it with warm water on a daily basis. You may also want to brush them with a soft toothbrush. Attachments Some patients need to wear attachments or ridges in order to ensure that their teeth move into place perfectly. An attachment is a clear bump that is made of an enamel colored composite and secured to the teeth. Bumps on your aligners will grip them in order to hold the aligner in place. Ridges work in a similar way only an indent is created instead of a raised bump. This can be necessary for more complicated cases to ensure that a particular tooth, or several teeth, move into place like they should. Your Walnut Creek Invisalign® Dentists Checkups Patients of Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek will need to see our dentist for checkups to ensure that teeth are moving like they are supposed to. Fortunately, since the aligners are made at the beginning of the procedure, these appointments are less frequent than if you were wearing metal braces. With traditional braces, a metal bracket is placed on each tooth, and a wire is threaded between them then held in place using rubber bands. The wires need to be adjusted on a regular basis in order to keep teeth moving in the right direction. This requires frequent office visits. For people with busy schedules and a hectic life – this is inconvenient, and any delay in appointment scheduling can prolong the time frame that braces need to be worn for. As an Invisalign Dentist Our dentist sees patients less frequently because the checkups are not to adjust anything, just to make sure that the procedure is working. This is far more convenient for patients throughout the 94596 area. Treatment Time For most patients living in the Walnut Creek CA area, the procedure takes around twelve months. The exact time frame will depend on your situation, and only Our dentist can tell you how long they will need to be worn. Overall, the treatment time can be less than with metal braces. This is in part because you don’t have to schedule appointments to keep your teeth moving. Simply pull out a new aligner. Finding an Invisalign Dentist Not all dentists offer Invisalign®. You have to receive special training in order to provide it to patients, and Our dentist is one of the best Invisalign® Dentists in California. To learn if the procedure is right for you, schedule an appointment with our Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek office by calling (510) 871-8602. How will Invisalign® impact my life? Unlike wearing traditional braces, Invisalign® won’t make a major impact on your quality of life. Since the aligners are clear, it won’t impact your appearance. Additionally, since they only need to be worn for 22 hours a day, they will not interfere with eating. This is a huge advantage because you can eat your favorite plate of ribs, go out for a romantic date, or eat a caramel apple without worrying about something becoming stuck in your teeth or a wire being pulled out of place. This time also allows you to take the aligner out when having an important conversation or making a presentation at work. Overall, this is a convenient way to straighten your teeth and provides the maximum level of flexibility. Some people are concerned about whether or not wearing an aligner will impact their speech. Most of our Walnut Creek patients tell us that they have to get used to wearing aligners after the first couple of days. Sometimes, patients have a slight lisp which goes away once they become used to speaking while wearing them. This is standard with any orthodontic procedure but fortunately; most people can speak normally within a couple of days. ‍ Other Services Lumineers Teeth Whitening Cosmetic Smile Makeover Dental Veneers Dental Bonding Schedule an Appointment Book Appointment Now Full name Phone number Email address Preferred date* Preferred time Message* Monday to Saturday: 09AM - 10PM Thank you! We help growing smiles stay healthy with regular checkups, cleanings, and cavity prevention. Give your child the best start with expert pediatric dental care! Our Philosophy of Care Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek and their staff believe in the importance of preventative care. We focus on keeping patients throughout CA in good oral heath so that they can live a full, healthy, and enjoyable life that is free from oral pain. This starts by educating our patients on what they can do to stay healthy at home. In our family dentist office we recommend that patients eat a healthy diet that consists of green leafy vegetables, lean protein, nuts, dairy products, and crunchy fruits and veggies. Eating these foods along with drinking water can keep teeth healthy and make them stronger. By simultaneously reducing sugar intake, patients throughout Walnut Creek can reduce their risk of cavities. It is also important to brush and floss throughout the day. Instead of waiting for bedtime to brush teeth, carry a small toothbrush and use it after meals and snacks. This makes it possible to remove sugar and bacteria from the teeth and gums before it has the opportunity to turn into acid that can attack the teeth. This preventative step can greatly reduce a persons’ risk of getting a cavity or gum disease. Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek understand the importance of taking these steps at home and will spend the time necessary to educate and inform patients so that they can stay healthy overall. Education, after all, is essential for living a long and healthy life. 50% of people say that your smile is the first thing they notice. Make a great first impression, keep your teeth healthy. Visit Our Walnut Creek Family Dentist Office We welcome patients throughout the Walnut Creek CA area to schedule an appointment with our family dentist office by calling (510) 871-8602. Everyone should have their teeth cleaned and examined at least twice a year so if it has been awhile since you visited a family dentist, don’t delay in scheduling an appointment. During these ongoing dental exams Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek will make sure that your teeth are thoroughly cleaned and look for any signs of cavities or gum disease. If any are found, they will be treated right away before they can spread and create additional problems. Early detection and treatment are important for reducing any pain that may come as a result of an infection. For example, if gum disease is caught early, it can be treated with a thorough deep cleaning. If, on the other hand, it is left undiagnosed, surgery may eventually be required in order to correct it. Understanding the importance of these regular dental exams, the staff at Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek work to make each patient extremely comfortable. This includes being welcoming and kind while performing dental treatments in a way that is painless and relaxing. Patients throughout California visit our family dentist office because they trust us to do just that – take care of their teeth and gums, gently. While the majority of our patients are local and come from the 94596 area, we see patients from throughout the state that are looking for expert, gentle dental care. 40% of people over the age of 65 do not have all of their teeth. Don’t be a statistic, come see us! Family Dentist Age Groups We treat adults, children, and seniors at Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek. Each age group requires a different approach because dental needs and oral health changes with time. For example, with children the goal is to keep them comfortable and relaxed so that they will enjoy visiting our family dentist office and be willing to come back. With children, we go as slowly as necessary to ensure that their appointments are pleasant. Additionally, we focus on keeping their teeth healthy and free from cavities. This often involves additional treatments to strengthen and protect their teeth as preventative measures. Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek knows that it is far easier to keep a child’s teeth healthy and free from cavities than to try and get them comfortable with a major dental treatment. If you have children, call (510) 871-8602 to schedule an appointment so that they can stay in good oral health as they grow. Children As a parent, you naturally want what is best for your child. Many parents are unaware of how oral health and dental care plays into that. According to the Center for Disease Control, tooth decay (cavities) is the number one most commonly occurring infectious disease among children. This leads to children experiencing toothaches in high numbers, missing days from school, and experiencing overall discomfort. Tooth decay is not a trivial thing, but a condition that can create significant discomfort for your child and even make it difficult for them to eat, speak clearly, and engage in normal daily activities. If you live in the 94596 area and think that this won’t happen to your child, statistically, it most likely will. Brushing and flossing at home will help, but it isn’t enough. You need to bring your child to our kid friendly dentist office twice a year so that we can examine and clean their teeth in order to remove the plaque and bacteria that can lead to cavities in the first place. Adults In adults, we also focus on keeping teeth healthy with preventative care but end up treating a large number of patients that have damaged their teeth and need restorative solutions. With a full set of adult teeth, there are no replacements coming in. If a tooth has become damaged, we can restore it in a way that looks and feels completely natural. It is much easier for the tooth to become cracked or chipped than people think, so we regularly get calls from patients throughout Walnut Creek CA needing an emergency appointment in order to correct the damage. We try to accommodate last minute appointments as much as possible and Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek is an expert at correcting damaged teeth. Seniors Seniors, on the other hand, often struggle with gum disease and oral infections. As people age, their teeth can become weaker and infected more easily. Bone loss is incredibly common with seniors and by conducting regular dental exams Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek and the staff at Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek can help seniors to have strong teeth and reduce the risk of them falling out. Dr. Fernando was very attentive with my needs and made sure I was comfortable throughout the appointment. Overall I am very satisfied and will refer all my family and friends to come to Olympic dental." Ling L. If you live in the 94596 area and have experienced tooth loss, we encourage you to visit our Walnut Creek, CA office to discuss the many options available to you. You Don't Have To Live With Tooth Loss There are distinct advantages to living in the modern world. One of these, from the dental perspective is the ability to live without having the stigma and challenges associated with tooth loss. According to the Periodontic Association of America, roughly 175 million people, of all ages, have lost one or more teeth and this number is actually expected to grow larger over time. What this has done is spurred growth in the replacement tooth industry and the revolution of dental implants. Dental implants are a way to get the most natural looking and behaving replacement teeth. However, the standard implant procedure is not always physically viable or convenient. In this situation, the All-on-4® procedure can be a better solution. What Is All-On-4®? Basically, All-on-4® is a minimally invasive way of placing a full mouth of dental implants by only using four implants to support a full arch (upper or lower) fixed non-removable replacement teeth. Essentially what All-on-4® does, is allow you to have a full set of teeth without having to undergo multiple surgeries and replacements to place a full set of implants in your mouth. The greatest thing about this is that the All-on-4® procedure can typically be completed in our Walnut Creek office during one appointment under local anesthesia. For our 94596 patients who have lost all their teeth or may need to have the remaining teeth pulled due to decay, this is an amazing advancement that allows them to have a full set of teeth without undergoing multiple procedures. Simultaneously, this solution gives our CA patients the kind of teeth that look real and act exactly like the original set did. Who Should Get All-On-4®? This is one of the simplest questions to answer because anybody who has lost teeth, and wants to have a permanent good-looking set of replacement teeth, should use dental implants. More importantly however, when referring to the All-on-4® systems, people who have lost all of their teeth or a large portion of their teeth and want to live a full and healthy lifestyle should consider replacing their teeth with implants over removable dentures. The ideal candidate for All-on-4® dental implants is someone who already wears dentures or does not want to live with lost teeth. Additionally, this is an ideal procedure for someone that does not have the bone density to support a full set of individual implants, the time to have individual implants placed, or the budget to pay for them. This procedure is faster and more affordable. Why Do People Prefer All-On-4®? There are several ways in which All-on-4® implants are better than the dentures you currently use. All-on-4® implants are cleaned, brushed, and used exactly like your natural teeth are. They do not have to be taken out. There is no need for messy additives or uncomfortable wires to be placed in your mouth. Even more importantly for our Walnut Creek patients, dental implants allow you to eat any food that your heart desires. You do not have to worry about hot or cold affecting your dentures. You also can bite down with up to 70% more force which allows you to eat the foods that you love. Finally, All-on-4® dental implants look exactly like your natural teeth. This means is that no one will be able to tell that you are wearing a dental prosthetic. From a dental health perspective, it is important to note that when you have All-on-4®, it is going to prevent for the bone deterioration in the jawbone and ultimately will work to restore your facial features by fighting resorption. Once stimulated by your new set of teeth the jawbone will send a message to the body that it is being used again to support your teeth. This will help the jawbone to regain some of the mass that it has lost previously. Many of our 94596 patients notice a difference in their facial structure as a result. The Success Of The All-On-4® Procedure In Our Walnut Creek Dental Office All-on-4® dental implants have a success rate of 98%. What this means is that you have a 98% probability of leaving our Walnut Creek offices with a perfect set of teeth that are permanently attached to your jawbone. To discuss how successful the procedure may be for you, call (510) 616-9573 . The Process of Getting All-on-4® at Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek Typically, the surgery takes approximately two and a half hours per arch you can get your All-on-4® dental implants installed on your upper lower or both arches at the same time. The process of getting All-on-4® dental implants can be laid out in six simple steps. The first step is to have a detailed examination where we will look at your records, your existing conditions, whether you have a denture, what your facial structure needs are, and any other factors that could come into play when placing your dental implants. The second step typically involve CT scans, which are 3D pictures, of the jawbone including the position of the teeth to be replaced and giving us critical information about where the bone sinuses and nerves are located for the implants. Next, our dentist will create a computer simulation of the implants which are digitally positioned into the jawbone at the appropriate location to give you the most support you can get with your replacement teeth. All of this is adjusted as need be and allows for the fabrication of your new set of teeth. Finally, the most important step is the oral surgery. When you come in for surgery, we will provide you with anesthesia and then place the dental implants directly into your jawbone, so that your new set of teeth can be secured in place. Schedule A Consultation At Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek, we can replace your teeth with this convenient and innovative procedure. To discuss the many benefits or to get started, call (510) 616-9573 and schedule an examination and consultation with our Walnut Creek, CA dental office. ‍ Other Services Dental Bridges Dental Crowns Dentures & Partial Dentures Dental Implants Schedule an Appointment Book Appointment Now Full name Phone number Email address Preferred date* Preferred time Message* Monday to Saturday: 09AM - 10PM Thank you! At Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek our patients frequently ask Our dentist about dentures to determine if they are a good solution for their particular needs. As with any dental solution, there are pros and cons to wearing dentures and whether or not they will work for you depends largely on your lifestyle and the goals that you have for your appearance and the functionality of your smile. What are the types of dentures? There are three main types of dentures: temporary, partial dentures, and complete dentures. Temporary Dentures Our dentist will often provide patients with temporary dentures while they are undergoing a cosmetic dentistry procedure to replace a missing tooth. Temporaries ensure that patients throughout the Walnut Creek area have a natural looking smile while waiting for dental implants or a dental bridge to be completed. This is an excellent solution for when a tooth is knocked out during a sports game or in an accident. The temporary denture is secured in place with a metal wire that works like a retainer and can be taken in and out whenever you like. If you are looking for an immediate solution for replacing a missing tooth call (510) 616-9573. Keep in mind that a temporary denture is only meant to be worn for a few months and will need to be replaced. Partial Dentures If only a few of your teeth are missing, partial dentures are a good solution for replacing them. Unlike a full set of dentures, these are held in place by a plastic base that is the same color as your gums. A metal framework is typically created in order to secure the base and prevent it from falling out. As long as you have natural teeth in place, you cannot wear a full set, so a partial set of dentures is necessary. We treat patients throughout the 94596 area that want to know if a partial set is better than a cosmetic procedure. They function differently because dentures are removable and cosmetic dentistry solutions are typically permanent. If you live in the Walnut Creek CA area, call for your consultation and we can provide you with a list of options to consider. Complete Denture When all of your teeth are missing, complete dentures can replace them. This is the type of dentures that you typically see in cartoons and movies. Technology has improved in recent years, making them more comfortable and natural looking than ever. Our dentist can determine if this is the best way to replace your teeth or if an alternative solution would help you to achieve your goals. If you proceed with getting a complete set of dentures, your gums will be healed and ready in eight to 12 weeks after your teeth have been removed. When teeth are removed the bones and gums will start to shrink. By waiting for up to 12 weeks, you can be sure that your set of complete dentures will fit securely. Many patients throughout California prefer not to wait and get immediate dentures. This solution does not require a waiting period, but there will be adjustments later on after the gums and bone have settled into their permanent size. More About Dentures How are dentures made? In order for dentures to be created, patients in CA need to schedule a dental appointment. At this time, the dentist will examine your gums and other teeth to determine if dentures are the best solution for you and if so, what type. A mold will then be taken of your teeth and gums so that the dentures can be created in a dental lab. Typically, several molds or impressions will be made so that the dentist can determine how your jaw functions and moves. Using these impressions, the lab will make a set of dentures that looks natural and fits perfectly. If necessary, adjustments will be made. Our dentist can discuss the process in more detail during a consultation. Benefits of Dentures Patients throughout the 94596 area like how convenient dentures are. Whether you need a full or partial set, they can replace teeth in a non-invasive way. There is no surgical element to worry about, and temporary dentures can be fitted immediately. This provides a quick and easy solution. If, however, you are looking for something that feels more natural, you should consider a cosmetic dentistry procedure. Negatives of Dentures The biggest challenge with dentures is that they do not feel like natural teeth. Patients of Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek tend to agree that while they are functional, you still have to think about them where other cosmetic dentistry procedures make it easy to forget you ever lost a tooth in the first place. Modern techniques have made dentures more secure and comfortable than they used to be, but they are still a foreign object in your mouth and can become loose when eating or speaking. If you are currently experiencing this problem, call Our dentist at (510) 616-9573 for a consultation. Alternative Options Patients in California have been enjoying the benefits of a dentures alternative. There is a procedure that combines implant dentistry with dentures. Those that need complete dentures can benefit by having a secure way to hold their dentures in place. If you live in the Walnut Creek CA area, we will be happy to examine your gums and let you know if you are a good candidate for the procedure. In this scenario, an impression is taken of your mouth in order to create a denture that will be secured in place using implants. Once created, metal posts will be implanted under your gums, and the dentures secured to it. This way patients get the benefits of how quickly dentures can be created and the convenience of the stability that can only come from using implant technology. How do I care for my dentures? Every night you need to take your dentures out. We advise patients of Our dentist to rinse them thoroughly then use a denture brush to remove any food particles before rinsing them again. You also need to brush your gums, tongue, and the roof of your mouth with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste. You can use an antiseptic mouthwash afterwards to kill any lingering bacteria and improve your breath. Your dentures should soak all night then be placed back in the mouth in the morning. ‍ Other Services All-on-4 Dental Implants Dental Bridges Dental Crowns Dental Implants Schedule an Appointment Book Appointment Now Full name Phone number Email address Preferred date* Preferred time Message* Monday to Saturday: 09AM - 10PM Thank you! While here, we can examine your smile and provide you with more information about Lumineers. This is an excellent solution for addressing a variety of aesthetic issues and at Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek we have found that our patients appreciate how convenient the procedure truly is. ‍ What are Lumineers? Lumineers are a thin porcelain shell that have been designed to fit your teeth perfectly. Each Lumineer is bonded to the surface of one of your teeth, covering the visible areas of it. As a result, when you smile, all that you see are the Lumineers instead of your natural teeth. ‍ Lumineers as Restorations When you have stained, cracked, or chipped teeth, you need to decide whether you want to replace them or use Lumineers to restore them. At Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek, we realize the many benefits of keeping your natural teeth intact and recommend that you select the restoration option whenever possible. ‍ Lumineers for Cosmetic Purposes in Walnut Creek Lumineers are one of the most popular solutions for replacing defective enamel. Lumineers, and the more well-known dental veneers, are used to replace enamel on teeth that have become stained or simply do not have the shine or the whiteness they once did. Lumineers, like the dental veneers, are an extremely thin strip of porcelain that is placed over your naturally occurring teeth. These ultra-thin strips of porcelain can augment your teeth and make them look like there is no damage, no stains, and that they are perfectly formed and shaped. For this reason, Lumineers can be used to – Close gaps in between your teeth Alter the shape and size of your teeth so that they are symmetrical Cover dark stains Make your teeth look uniform Give you a bright and brilliant smile ‍ Lumineers vs. Dental Veneers Patients often ask us why they should choose Lumineers over the more common dental veneers. The answer to this question is relatively simple. When you have dental veneers placed, there’s a need to scrape away a portion of your dental enamel to make way for the veneers. Essentially, what you are doing with dental veneers is removing the naturally occurring enamel so that they can lay flat without making your teeth appear overly large. The challenge with this process is that veneers permanently alter your teeth. Once the enamel is gone, you will always need a dental restoration in order to protect them. Simultaneously, this process can be incredibly uncomfortable and that discomfort can last for days. Also, it is important to note that the more naturally occurring enamel you have, the better it is for the overall longevity of your teeth. When you decide to use Lumineers, over the more commonly used dental veneers, you are choosing a solution that is less invasive and typically allows for your enamel to remain intact. The Lumineers are as thin as a contact lens and this allows them to be placed without requiring your natural teeth to be permanently altered. This makes the process of receiving Lumineers more comfortable, faster, and reversible. As a result, we have found that our Walnut Creek, CA patients tend to prefer this option. ‍ Other Benefits of Walnut Creek Lumineers Lumineers are unique in that they are approximately 0.2 millimeters and highly translucent. This allows them to replicate the natural appearance of a tooth. Another advantage to using Lumineers, is that they are durable and remain resilient, lasting in some cases over 20 years. This can be far longer than other dental restorations. Additionally, with Lumineers there are typically no shots or need to use the dental drill. ‍ The Process of Receiving Lumineers from Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek Once you have decided to improve your smile with Lumineers, you will need to visit our 94596 office to discuss the procedure. The procedure to get your Lumineers consists of two visits to an authorized certified Lumineers dentist. The first visit is the initial consultation, during which impressions of both your upper and lower teeth will be taken along with measurements. This information is sent to the Lumineers laboratory along with photographs and other records that you can provide. They are created on-site using your specific measurements to ensure that they fit perfectly and look natural. Unlike traditional veneers, you won’t need any shots since there is no requirement to drill and remove the enamel. Also, you will not have to wear unsightly acrylic temporaries. The first visit to our Walnut Creek office is more consultative and getting the impression that we need in order to make sure that your Lumineers fit perfectly. Simultaneously, we will look at the color palette and other factors to make sure that once your Lumineers have been fitted and bonded into place, they look exactly the way you want them to. This final step will take place at your second, and final, appointment. Note: It is important to remember that your Lumineers will function exactly the way your naturally occurring teeth would. There are no dietary restrictions and as long as you continue to keep your teeth clean and healthy, they should last for years to come. ‍ Lumineers are Reversible A benefit of Lumineers is that they are completely reversible because there is no grinding down of healthy tooth enamel, and in most cases, your natural teeth are still intact. However, once you have Lumineers it is highly unlikely that you’re going to want to go back to your old teeth. If you are the kind of person who wants a beautiful smile, the Hollywood smile, then you need to consider Lumineers to replace your stained, damage, cracked, chipped or otherwise imperfect teeth. The process is quick, the results are stunning, and the convenience factor is the most important aspect when it comes to choosing Lumineers over alternative solutions. ‍ Schedule a Consultation To learn more about this amazing solution, call (510) 616-9573 and schedule an appointment with our Walnut Creek, CA dental office. We are confident that you will enjoy the many benefits offered by Lumineers and the fact that the procedure is far more comfortable than other cosmetic solutions. This cosmetic dentistry solution is affordable, durable, and long-lasting. It is also non-invasive, making it an ideal restoration for children and adults who are too busy for alternative procedures like dental veneers and crowns. While lesser known, dental bonding is a dependable cosmetic dentistry solution, and patients throughout the Walnut Creek, CA area are delighted by the results. If you would like to learn more about Restorative bonding, we encourage you to call our 94596 dental office at (510) 616-9573. Our dentist can meet with you, examine your teeth, and discuss how a bonding procedure can be used to improve your smile. Cosmetic Dental Bonding: A Natural-Looking Solution If you have damaged your tooth and are looking for a natural-looking restoration, consider Restorative bonding. In this procedure, a tooth-colored resin material is applied to your tooth and shaped until it looks like your naturally occurring tooth. It is then hardened in place with a special dental light, effectively bonding it to the tooth. This requires the skill of an expert dentist who understands how to make the restored tooth blend in with the surrounding ones. At Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek, we are experts at doing so and will ensure that, regardless of the type of restoration you receive, your smile will look amazing. Frequently Asked Questions About Restorative Bonding Can dental cosmetic bonding fix my child’s chipped tooth? Yes, it can. As a cosmetic dentist, we can restore your child’s chipped tooth by applying resin to their tooth and shaping it until it looks like their natural one. Our dentist will match the shade of the resin with their surrounding teeth so it blends in entirely. This way, it will be difficult to tell that they ever damaged their tooth in the first place. The only thing to note is that if their teeth are still growing, they may need a revisit in the future. Will a tooth bonding procedure be uncomfortable? Not at all. This is a non-invasive procedure and one of the most comfortable restorations you can have. In order to complete the restoration or to make cosmetic improvements, all we need to do is roughen the tooth slightly and apply a conditioning liquid. Next, we will apply the resin material that has been shaded matched to your teeth. It will be shaped perfectly before being hardened in place. Since your tooth structure remains intact, the procedure will be completely comfortable. In fact, most people do not need any anesthesia or pain medication at all. Can Restorative bonding be used to fill gaps in between my teeth? Yes, it can. When you visit our Walnut Creek dental office, we can close small gaps you have in between your teeth using this simple procedure. This is an alternative to placing veneers or crowns or undergoing an orthodontic procedure. Since cosmetic bonding can typically be completed in one dental visit, it is the fastest way to complete this transformation. Can it reshape my teeth? Bonding is an excellent way to reshape your teeth. We can use it to lengthen your teeth or change their width. By doing so, your teeth can appear more uniform, and the inconsistencies between your teeth can be eliminated. It only takes 30 to 60 minutes per tooth, so reshaping is much easier and faster than you may have thought. Will cosmetic bonding help if my teeth are stained? Yes, if your teeth are stained, we can use bonding to cover them. Typically, we suggest trying a whitening procedure first, since this can improve the appearance of your smile with relative ease. There are times, however, when a whitening procedure is not enough to remove some of the deep or more significant stains. This is where Restorative bonding can be particularly useful. We can place the resin material on top of your stained tooth or teeth in order to improve their appearance. When you visit our California dental office, we can discuss your options with you and complete the procedure in as little as one visit. Is a tooth bonding procedure reversible? Yes, since bonding is applied without removing the enamel on your teeth, the process is reversible. This means that if you want to change course and restore your teeth or change their appearance with an alternative procedure in the future, you can. While most of our patients are entirely satisfied with the appearance of their teeth after the bonding procedure, some use this as a temporary solution while considering how they want to improve their smile in the long-term. Is dental bonding affordable? If budget is a concern, dental bonding is an affordable and viable option. Since bonding material is placed on the tooth and hardened in our office, there is no need for participation from the dental lab. This makes the process more cost-effective than getting dental veneers or crowns, two other comparable procedures. If you are weighing your options between the three, let us know. We can give you a breakdown of what each procedure will cost. For more information, call (510) 616-9573 and schedule a consultation. How long will it last? A restorative bonding procedure is durable, natural-looking, and effective. There is no set time frame for how long the resin will last. It could last for several decades or several years. Taking care of your teeth will help to increase its longevity. Be sure to brush with a soft or electronic toothbrush so you do not risk eroding your teeth and your restoration. You should also avoid eating food that is too acidic or engaging in any activities that could break or chip your teeth. While bonding material is strong and durable, it is not as strong as a dental crown would be, so if you are looking for a longer lasting restoration, you may want to consider that option, as well. ‍ Other Services Lumineers Teeth Whitening Cosmetic Smile Makeover Dental Veneers Invisalign® Schedule an Appointment Book Appointment Now Full name Phone number Email address Preferred date* Preferred time Message* Monday to Saturday: 09AM - 10PM Thank you! Orthodontics is the study and treatment of dental displacement and malocclusions. As an orthodontist, we can treat any issues pertaining to the jaw. We can also move and adjust teeth, even if they are fully formed and hardened. This makes it possible to straighten teeth in adults, rather than only children. Due to the various specialties in orthodontia, some orthodontist may only treat children instead of adults. Additionally, dentofacial orthopedics is an area of orthodontic care that involves more surgical elements in order to correct issues with the jaw or face. Overall, an orthodontist in California treats the position of teeth and the jaw; while also changing the overall shape and appearance of a patient’s face. At Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek, we find that many of our patients are pleasantly surprised by how dramatically different they look once their orthodontic treatment is complete. Orthodontia was technically the first specialty created in the field of dentistry. In order to become an orthodontist, doctors must complete additional schooling along with dental school. An orthodontist continues to train until he or she becomes a true expert at straightening teeth and aligning the jaw. This ensures dependable and reliable results for patients seeking orthodontic care. If you live in the Walnut Creek area and are considering straightening your teeth, we invite you to call (510) 616-9573 and schedule a consultation. We will discuss your goals along with the treatment options that are available to you. Why Orthodontics is Necessary As a Walnut Creek orthodontist, we find that many children suffer from overcrowding teeth issues, creating the need for our procedures. Overcrowding can cause teeth to grow in at incorrect or crooked positions, leading to difficulties as an adult. Whether from an accident or a lack of oral hygiene, when a baby tooth falls out prematurely, the teeth around it move into the open space. This can cause the shape of the palate to change, taking up the room the adult tooth needs to grow in properly. In the past, many people had their teeth pulled in order to make space for all of their permanent teeth. Now, we can create space in your teeth using a variety of treatment methods. At Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek, we also treat patients using orthodontics if their jaw is out of place. This can make it painful to speak, chew and even open one’s mouth. When the bite is off, many people find simple daily activities uncomfortable and seek treatment as a result. In other cases, we provide solutions for teeth that have grown in crooked, even if there was enough space for them. Fortunately, orthodontic treatment can resolve all of these issues. The Procedure If you are considering straightening your teeth, there are several ways to do so. Regardless of the option you choose, the concept is virtually the same. The appliance must consistently apply pressure to move the teeth into position. We cannot force teeth into place immediately. There must be slow and consistent pressure in order to ensure that the teeth move without being damaged. Therefore, we do not apply pressure to all of the teeth at the same time. Instead, we apply pressure to specific teeth. An adjustment is made to apply additional force to a different tooth or teeth while holding the other ones in place. When treating patients throughout Walnut Creek we are cognizant of the importance of continued oral health care. We recommend that patients do a thorough job of regularly brushing and flossing their teeth. This will decrease the risk of cavities and gum disease while receiving orthodontic care. Once the procedure is over, most patients are required to wear a retainer. Children that straighten their teeth may only need to wear a retainer for a couple of years, whereas adults often find themselves wearing a retainer for life. Ongoing retention ensures that teeth do not move back into their previous position – a risk with any orthodontics treatment. Treatment Options At Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek, we are proud to provide patients throughout California with the ability to straighten their teeth and love their smile. There are multiple ways to move teeth into position, many of which, we offer at our office. Orthodontic solutions include: Spacers and Expanders Spacers and expanders are used prior to, or in conjunction with, wearing braces. When a patient suffers from overcrowding issues, these solutions can make space for the other teeth. It is critical for there to be room for teeth to move to, or the perfect smile will never be achieved. At times, children will wear an expander years before actually getting braces. This can help teeth to grow into the proper position; or at least, close to it. Metal Braces Traditional metal braces are still an excellent way to straighten teeth. If you would like more information, we invite you to call (510) 616-9573 to schedule a consultation. Technology has improved braces to where the brackets and wires are smaller than they once were. This has made braces more comfortable and less conspicuous at the same time. Simultaneously, smaller brackets mean that there are fewer opportunities for food to become stuck or for awkward photos. This form of braces is the best solution for children and at Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek and we highly recommend considering orthodontics as early as seven years of age. However, the actual start time depends on the child and their teeth. Clear Aligners We work with patients throughout the local area that are interested in straightening their teeth but (510) 616-9573 do not like the look or feel of traditional braces. In this case, clear aligners can accomplish the same or similar goals without making it obvious. Invisalign® use aligners to straighten teeth. With this consistent pressure applied, teeth will gradually move into position as they do when wearing braces. The aligners themselves look like full, clear retainers and are meant to be worn for around 22 hours per day. This is why many patients in Walnut Creek prefer aligners – they can be taken out at any time. If you would like to learn more about orthodontics and the various treatments we provide, call (510) 616-9573 to schedule a consultation. ‍ Other Services TMJ Dentist Family Dentistry Oral Surgery Sedation Dentistry Periodontics Laser Dentistry Dental Cleanings and Exams Dental Checkup Schedule an Appointment Book Appointment Now Full name Phone number Email address Preferred date* Preferred time Message* Monday to Saturday: 09AM - 10PM Thank you! Our dentist is an expert at completing the procedure and doing so while keeping patients completely comfortable. Root canals are a common procedure. In fact, every year millions of root canals are performed and, as a result, the need to pull infected teeth is greatly reduced. If you live in the Walnut Creek area and are currently experiencing tooth pain, we invite you to call (510) 616-9573 to schedule an appointment and see if you need a root canal endodontic treatment. Why do most people need a root canal? When a tooth becomes infected, that infection can spread into the center of the tooth. This area is called the dental pulp. Inside of the dental pulp is the nerves, connective tissue, and blood vessels. All of the sensitive areas of the tooth are contained here. As such, when the area becomes infected it can be incredibly painful, requiring immediate treatment. We can perform a root canal quickly on people living in and around the 94596 area. How does the treatment work? A root canal endodontic procedure works by creating a small hole in the tooth so that all of the infected areas can be removed. The dental pulp is removed, and oftentimes so are the roots. You only need your tooth roots to feel sensations like hot and cold and for the tooth to grow in. Once it has fully matured, removing the roots will not directly harm the tooth. It can, however, prevent the further spread of infection so when it is necessary to remove the roots; we promptly do so. Once done, we will clean the area to ensure that the infection is gone. Our dentist will typically prescribe antibiotics, as well. This ensures that any lingering infection is eliminated. In order to complete the root canal, we will seal up the hole and area where the dental pulp used to be. This is typically done with something called gutta-percha. This is a rubber-like substance that can help to stabilize the tooth now that a portion is missing. At we will then use a filling or crown in order to further strengthen and protect the damaged tooth. Both fillings and crowns can now be created in a tooth-color. This means that regardless of where your infected tooth is located, a crown can be used, and it will blend in seamlessly with the surrounding teeth. Patients throughout the Walnut Creek area appreciate how natural their tooth looks once the procedure is complete. More About Root Canal Treatment Why should I have a root canal endodontics treatment? If you live in Walnut Creek, CA you should schedule an appointment with Our dentist to discuss the health of your teeth, any problems that you may be having and what should be done to heal and protect the tooth. If it appears that a root canal is the best option, we will make this recommendation. If not, we will present a treatment solution that will solve your health issue. Overall, a root canal endodontics treatment is extremely effective for saving damaged teeth by removing any infection that may be there. This single treatment makes it possible for millions of teeth to be saved on an annual basis and once it is completed; eating and drinking becomes easy again. What about discomfort? We help patients throughout California to feel comfortable during their root canal endodontics procedure by using sedation dentistry. We have a variety of ways that we can eliminate both discomfort and anxiety during a root canal. Whether a patient needs to take something ahead of time to relax or medication to numb the specific area that is being worked on, Our dentist is an expert at painless dentistry and ensuring that patients are able to enjoy their dental treatments. What are the advantages of this procedure? In the past, many people would need to have their teeth pulled if they became severely infected or the dental pulp became inflamed. Now, those same teeth can be saved by performing a root canal. This is a far better option because it keeps the natural tooth in place. This is important for the shape of the face because as teeth fall out the muscles in the face can start to sag. While this isn’t particularly common with the loss of one tooth, it is when several become infected and fall out. By treating and saving an infected tooth, Our dentist is helping to preserve our patients’ facial structure. Another benefit is that once the root canal has been completed, and the filling or crown is in place; it is possible to eat like normal and without restrictions. Once the infection is gone, and the tooth is strengthened, it will behave like it used to. That makes it possible to bite down with normal force, chew, and maintain normal activities without worrying about the tooth. This helps patients throughout Walnut Creek to get back to return to their busy schedules. A restored tooth will look completely natural if a tooth-colored crown or filling is used to restore it. In fact, crowns can be created in the exact shade of the surrounding teeth so that it blends in perfectly. This way no one will know that you ever had a procedure completed. If, in fact, you had a root canal done previously, you may want to have the filling or crown around it replaced with today’s version for an improved appearance. Alternatively, if don’t have a root canal endodontics procedure completed, the infected tooth will likely need to be pulled. This is essential for preventing the spread of infection. Once the tooth is removed it will need to be replaced. The options for doing so involve wearng a denture, getting a dental bridge or having dental implants installed. These are all viable solutions but take additional time, and the recovery period is longer since the procedures will take several steps. Therefore, the easiest and most straightforward solution is to have Our dentist save your tooth by performing a root canal endodontics procedure. To learn more about this option call Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek at (510) 616-9573 and schedule an appointment. ‍ Other Services TMJ Dentist Family Dentistry Oral Surgery Sedation Dentistry Orthodontics Periodontics Laser Dentistry Dental Cleanings and Exams Dental Checkup Schedule an Appointment Book Appointment Now Full name Phone number Email address Preferred date* Preferred time Message* Monday to Saturday: 09AM - 10PM Thank you! Lost Filling/Crown Tooth Loose Abscess Reasons for Needing an Emergency Dental Visit The American Dental Association reported that the number one cause of adult tooth damage every year is playing sports. This spans all types of athletics and creates the need for emergency appointments throughout Walnut Creek CA. Most adults don’t have the time to play for an organized league, even a casual one. This means that even a backyard game of basketball can lead to a tooth being damaged or knocked out. The same holds true for kids playing sports throughout the 94596 area. There are ways to protect yourself like wearing a mouth guard but when an emergency strikes call (510) 871-8602. Car accidents are another leading cause of tooth injury. While the enamel on your teeth is strong, it may not be strong enough to prevent your tooth from breaking when colliding with the steering wheel. With millions of accidents a year, teeth are a common victim. We recommend that patients of Olympic Dental of Walnut Creekget examined at a local emergency room after being in a car accident, just to make sure that they haven’t sustained any physical injuries. Afterwards, patients in the Walnut Creek CA area should call for an emergency dentist appointment. The emergency room does not treat tooth damage, so you will need to see both types of medical providers. ‍ Walnut Creek Emergency Dentists Severe and sudden toothaches are another reason people in California end up needing an emergency dentist. Our emergency dentist is an expert at examining teeth and determining what is causing the pain. It may be a little cavity that grew into a big one and now requires a root canal. Another possibility is gum disease which can cause the gums to recede, leaving the tooth and roots exposed. Both can lead to intense pain and require emergency treatment. We don’t want patients of Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek to experience oral pain and will do our best to treat you right away so that you can remain comfortable. If a tooth infection is left untreated for a long period of time, it can lead to a dental abscess. This is extremely painful. An abscess is a major tooth infection that can settle into your jawbone and the floor of your mouth. If it does, oral surgery may be necessary in order to remove the infection. We can let you know if we see an abscess during your dental exam with our emergency dentist. ‍ How can I relieve dental pain while waiting for an emergency dental appointment? We help people throughout the 94596 to stay comfortable and live a life that is pain-free. If you come into our Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek office in pain, we will identify what is creating the issue and the treatment options available for dealing with it. Often, we will also prescribe medication to help with the pain. This can prevent you from feeling discomfort while your tooth is being treated and at home. You may also want to apply a cold compress or ice pack to the area in order to reduce or prevent swelling. ‍ Treatment Options ‍ When a tooth has fallen out… If your tooth has been knocked out, try to find it. Once located, rinse the tooth under warm water without scrubbing it. Next, place it in a cup of milk and bring it with you to your dental appointment. We will try to save the tooth, if possible. If not, our emergency dentist will discuss options for replacing the tooth. This may include dentures, a dental bridge or dental implants. ‍ When a tooth is broken… It is common for people to damage a tooth while playing sports or getting into a car accident. It is likely that the tooth will become cracked or chipped. As long as the tooth structure remains in place, it can typically be corrected using cosmetic dentistry. There are multiple ways that we restore teeth in California. Some of which include dental veneers and a dental crown. Both are excellent options and can restore your tooth to full functionality while keeping it natural looking. As an emergency dental facility, we can provide you with information on what your options are and the best way to restore your tooth while achieving the goals that you have for your smile. To schedule an appointment, call (510) 871-8602 . ‍ When a tooth is infected… As an emergency dentist, we will assess the situation and inform you of what is infected and the best way to treat it quickly. Our job is to keep you comfortable, healthy and pain-free. Patients throughout Walnut Creek CA trust us to remove infections and keep their teeth and gums in excellent oral health. Whether fixing a general cavity or treating a dental abscess, we make it possible for a tooth to be free from infection and pain. At Olympic Dental in Walnut Creek , CA, we offer high-quality dental bridges to replace one or more missing teeth, helping you regain your confidence and function. Our custom-made bridges are designed to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth, restoring balance and beauty to your smile. What Is a Dental Bridge? A dental bridge is a fixed dental restoration that literally "bridges" the gap left by one or more missing teeth. It consists of one or more artificial teeth (pontics) anchored in place by crowns placed on the adjacent natural teeth or dental implants. Dental bridges not only fill gaps in your smile but also prevent neighboring teeth from shifting, which can lead to bite problems and jaw pain over time. Benefits of Dental Bridges Restore Function: Eat and speak normally without discomfort. Enhance Aesthetics: Regain a complete, natural-looking smile. Prevent Shifting: Keep surrounding teeth from drifting out of position. Support Facial Structure: Maintain the shape and definition of your face. Durable and Long-Lasting: With proper care, dental bridges can last 10+ years. Frequently Asked Questions How many teeth can a bridge replace? Dental bridges can replace one or several missing teeth in a row, depending on your needs and the strength of the supporting teeth or implants. Is getting a dental bridge painful? The procedure is typically done under local anesthesia, and most patients experience minimal discomfort. How do I care for my dental bridge? Brush and floss daily, especially around the bridge, and visit us regularly for cleanings and exams. Specialized floss or interdental brushes can help keep the area clean. What are my alternatives to a dental bridge? Dental implants and partial dentures are common alternatives. We'll help you determine the best option for your needs and goals. At our Walnut Creek dental office, we treat patients of all ages and are focused on improving the health and appearance of our patients’ smiles. We understand that not everyone is excited about dental care and that due to busy schedules, a lack of insurance, or general forgetfulness, a lot of people don’t visit the dentist with any regularity. If that’s you – don’t worry. You are not alone. According to USA today, 34 percent of Americans don’t visit the dentist on an annual basis. While this is a large group of people, not having a dental checkup can place you at risk for a variety of health issues. We encourage you to take an hour out of your day for the benefit of your oral health and your future quality of life. To get started, all you need to do is call (510) 616-9573 and schedule an appointment. Our friendly staff won’t judge you for your lack of prior dental care but will be happy to get you up to speed again. Why You Need A Dental Checkup There is a direct link between visiting the dentist and keeping your natural teeth. If you want to ensure that you have a full mouth of health teeth – visit the dentist. Gallup released a study in 2014 that found the states with the highest percentage of dental visits also had the lowest percentage of adult tooth loss. For example, in Connecticut 74 percent of adults visited the dentist in the past year, and their rate of adult tooth loss was only 9 percent. On the other hand, in West Virginia only 57 percent of adults visited the dentist in the past year, and 37 percent of adults have complete tooth loss. The correlation is clear and should prompt you to give us a call. If you do lose your teeth, we can help by providing you with replacements in the form of dental implants, bridges, or dentures. Still, there is no need for you to experience significant tooth loss when you visit our office regularly for preventative care. Saving your teeth, after all, is less time-consuming and less expensive. Another reason to schedule a dental checkup is to make sure that you don’t experience a toothache or infection. We treat patients throughout the 94596 area and find that toothaches can create enough discomfort to cause people to miss work. In fact, according to the Center for Disease Control, 164 million work hours are lost each and every year due to dental related health issues. If you are like many of our Walnut Creek patients that don’t feel they have time for the dentist, you definitely need to schedule a dental checkup. Failing to do so could result in a more serious health condition forming and the need to take time off of work. After all, without preventative dental care, you are at a greater risk for tooth decay, infection, and gum disease. What Happens at Your Dental Checkup At Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek, we are a gentle dentist and will complete your dental checkup in a way that is comfortable and relaxing. We understand that some people don’t visit the dentist because they have a dental phobia or are concerned that something may be wrong. If this is the case, and you do have a cavity, we will treat your tooth gently and carefully so that your health issues can be addressed without causing you any further irritation. We invite you to call (510) 616-9573 and schedule your dental checkup right away. When you come in, we will escort you to the examination room where you will be given a drape and goggles to wear. Next, we will take images of your teeth and gums to see if there are any infections or decay that are under the surface. We will also perform a visual inspection of your gums and each one of your teeth. During this time, we will also be looking for signs of infection, tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer. If we identify any of these issues, we will discuss treatment options with you and may even be able to treat minor cavities that day. Before starting any procedures we will discuss them in detail to ensure that you are comfortable and relaxed. We will also clean your teeth before you go to ensure that you don’t have any lingering plaque or bacteria on your teeth or gums. When you visit our Walnut Creek, CA dental office, you can expect the highest quality of care and that your dental check-up will be completed efficiently and gently. The Benefits of Coming in Now At Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek, we want you to visit our 94596 dentist office at the first sign of discomfort. If you have even a slight toothache or irritation in your gums, you should schedule a dental exam. If there is a problem, we can correct it immediately, rather than allowing it to grow and spread. In many cases, we can help you to avoid experiencing any significant discomfort by simply removing the decayed area while it is still small. Otherwise, you may find yourself with a dental emergency as an untreated cavity spreads. Fortunately, we make it easy to schedule a dental checkup with our Walnut Creek dentist office. All you need to do is call (510) 616-9573 to schedule an appointment. We will work within your schedule to ensure that you receive the care you need, exactly when you need it. Why You Shouldn’t Wait for Dental Care While we understand that many people wait to seek dental care due to anxiety, time, or finances, we do not recommend it. Instead, we suggest that you schedule a dental exam now, even if you aren’t experiencing any discomfort. Doing so will allow us to remove any plaque or bacteria that has built up on your teeth, ensure that you don’t have any cavities that are forming and prevent you from experiencing gum disease. Our goal is to treat you before you have any health issues, and a dental checkup is designed to allow us to do so. We believe that preventative care is essential for staying in good oral health. Our goal is to keep our patients as healthy as possible, and the best way to do so is through ongoing dental care and teaching our patients how to practice good oral hygiene at home. Dental Cleanings & Examinations for Children Our dentists work with patients of all ages and knows how to help children to feel comfortable while visiting the dentist. Families throughout California visit our dentist office to have their children’s teeth cleaned. We recommend that teeth cleanings and exams start from a very young age. This is important for ensuring that baby teeth grow in properly and stay healthy until the adult teeth are ready to come in. Many people don’t realize how important healthy baby teeth are. Children can get cavities and gum disease just like adults do with the difference being that children are less capable of understanding or dealing with discomfort. We recommend that parents throughout Walnut Creek bring their children in for dental cleanings and examinations at least twice a year. This way we can remove harmful plaque and bacteria in order to prevent cavities. While cleaning children’s teeth, our staff has been trained to take it slowly and practice gentle dentistry. By building a rapport with our young patients, they will feel more relaxed during their dental appointments and visiting the dentist becomes fun instead of intimidating. We also recommend that parents take the time to read stories about going to the dentist and play games by teaching children how to examine their toy’s teeth. These little steps can help children to feel comfortable when getting their own teeth cleaned. By doing so twice a year, their baby teeth are more likely to stay in until they are supposed to fall out, and their adult teeth will also stay healthier. If you have questions about scheduling an appointment for your child call (510) 616-9573. Walnut Creek Cleaning & Examinations Adults We recommend that adults throughout Walnut Creek CA have their teeth cleaned twice a year, as well. Good oral health is important regardless of how old you are and as people age, their risk for an oral infection continues to increase. This is in part because, as teeth age, the protective enamel starts to wear away, and it can become easier to get a cavity. The best way to combat this is by brushing and flossing throughout the day in addition to visiting the dentist on a regular basis. We offer flexible appointment times so that you can schedule an appointment around your work or family schedule, making it easier than ever to get your teeth cleaned. Sensitive Teeth At Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek, Our dentist practices gentle dentistry and provides teeth cleanings for patients with sensitive teeth. Many adults avoid visiting the dentist because they are concerned that their teeth will hurt or feel worse during the exam or subsequent cleaning. When working with the right dentist, you can feel comfortable regardless of how sensitive your teeth are. We offer a variety of sedation methods so that you don’t have to feel anything while getting your dental cleaning and examinations. Whether you need something to relax or direct pain medication, Our dentist can create a treatment plan that includes sedation so that you can remain comfortable. If you live in California, it is important to understand the reason that teeth become sensitive. Very often, it is due to the enamel on the outside of the teeth wearing away. Enamel can wear away due to age, what you eat and improper oral health care. While brushing with desensitizing toothpaste can help, you need to continue visiting the dentist to ensure that your teeth and gums stay healthy. Otherwise, the sensitivity can increase. During your dental exam, let us know about the discomfort you have been feeling so that we can discuss ways to reduce it by using methods such as a fluoride treatment or sealant. Preventing Emergencies Regularly scheduled dental cleaning and examinations in the 94596 area can help to prevent a dental emergency. Many adults go far too long in between visits to the dentist. As a year or two goes by, infections can develop that can create a painful situation and lead to dental emergencies. For example, a minor cavity can be corrected with minimal discomfort but if the infection spreads into the center of the tooth the dental pulp can become infected and a root canal will become necessary. Fortunately, these types of infections can typically be avoided by scheduling an appointment twice a year with Our dentist. It is important to keep in mind that healthy teeth are also less likely to become damaged or injured so by staying in good health; you can prevent teeth from becoming cracked or chipped during an accident. Education While getting your teeth cleaned and examined, we will also discuss ways that you can keep your teeth and gums healthy at home. At Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek, we believe that good oral hygiene at home is important to do in conjunction with visiting our office. We recommend that you use a soft toothbrush to brush your teeth twice a day and use fluoride toothpaste. This will keep harmful sugar and bacteria off of your teeth and the fluoride will help to strengthen them. You should also floss daily to get food particles and bacteria out of hard to reach places. Following up with an antibacterial mouthwash will help to kill any remaining germs. Your diet is also important to good oral health. Make sure to drink plenty of water and eat a diet that contains dairy products, lean protein, green vegetables and complex carbs so that your body gets the nutrients it needs to stay healthy. We can provide additional tips and information during your dental cleaning and examinations. If you live in the 94596 area, we can examine your gums and let you know what the source of your problem is. The consequences of periodontal disease In its early stages, gum disease can cause some irritation and bleeding. There may be some discomfort, but it will be minimal. This stage is called gingivitis. If, however, it is left untreated the disease will spread, and the gums will start to recede by pulling away from the tooth. This creates pockets in the gum tissue that can expose more of the tooth structure and the root system. Once exposed, the tooth and roots are more susceptible to becoming infected as bacteria can gather and start to irritate the area. This can lead to cavities and infections along with bone loss. In severe cases, the bone loss in combination with receding gums can lead to tooth loss. In many cases, adult teeth that fall out due so because of gum disease. What causes gum disease? In short – bacteria. When bacteria remain on the teeth, it can form plaque and tartar. When this substance becomes stuck in between the teeth and gums, it can lead to gum complication. The best way to prevent this is to brush and floss several times throughout the day along with visiting the dentist for regular teeth cleanings. Are certain people at risk for the condition? There are things you can do to increase your risk for getting gum disease. This includes smoking, hormonal changes, pregnancy, diabetes, certain medications, and genetics. Any time that the blood flow is constricted or reduced, your risk for the disease increases. This is why diabetics and pregnant women are more susceptible to the condition. At Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek, we recommend that our pregnant patients visit our office at least twice during pregnancy in order to decrease their risk and the pregnancy complications that come with it. How is it treated? At Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek, there are several ways that we treat gum disease. Our dentist will make a recommendation after examining your teeth and gums to determine what the source of the problem is and what should be done to address it. The treatment plan is often dictated by the severity of the periodontitis. We recommend that patients throughout California look for the signs of gum disease and schedule an appointment immediately so that the least invasive procedure can be used to correct the problem. Once the disease has progressed too far, more significant procedures may be necessary to heal the gums. At times, this involves surgery. The first step in addressing gum disease is to complete a deep cleaning. By removing plaque and tartar from the teeth and gums, we can help patients throughout the Walnut Creek area start the healing process. Once the bacteria and plaque have been removed, the gums will start to heal naturally. If the plaque is only around the edge of the gum line, a standard teeth cleaning will work. If it has become trapped between the gums and teeth, a scaling and root planning procedure will be required. In this case, Our dentist will need to scrape the plaque off from the teeth underneath the gums. Some dentists use a laser to do so in order to complete the procedure faster. When surgery is required, it is typically because the gums have receded so significantly. When pockets form in the gum tissue, they need to be restored in order to protect the tooth again. In this case, a gum graft can be helpful. This works by taking tissue from the roof of the mouth or another area and grafting it to the gums so that the gum tissue can start to regenerate. The gums then need to be secured back around the tooth in order to protect it and the roots. If bone loss has occurred as a result of gum disease, a bone graft may be necessary in order to restore and strengthen the tooth. In this procedure natural or synthetic bone is compacted into the area and sealed so that the bone can start to regenerate. These procedures combined can help to both heal and restore your gums. In order to tell which procedures are necessary for you, call (510) 616-9573 and schedule a consultation with Our dentist. At Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek, we may start with a deep cleaning to see how well your gums react and start to heal. If they do not recover in short order, we may move to surgical procedures as necessary. How to Keep Your Gums Healthy You can prevent periodontitis by taking simple steps that include brushing your teeth after meals, flossing on a daily basis and rinsing your mouth with an antiseptic mouthwash once a day. This will help to remove bacteria and sugar from your teeth and gums before they can turn into plaque. Eating a healthy diet that is low in sugar can also help to keep your gums healthy. At Olympic Dental of Walnut Creek, we further recommend having your teeth cleaned professionally at least twice a year so that we can remove plaque and tartar from hard to reach places. This will ensure that your gums remain healthy. If you live in the Walnut Creek area, call (510) 616-9573 to schedule your dental exam so that you can remain in good health or receive treatment for a current condition. ‍ Other Services TMJ Dentist Family Dentistry Oral Surgery Sedation Dentistry Orthodontics Laser Dentistry Dental Cleanings and Exams Dental Checkup Schedule an Appointment Book Appointment Now Full name Phone number Email address Preferred date* Preferred time Message* Monday to Saturday: 09AM - 10PM Thank you!
