Your donation — or fundraising campaign with your friends — helps WAM Change the Face of Sound! Give to WAM   Start your own fundraiser for WAM! It’s quick and easy to create a unique WAM fundraising link for your family and friends. First you’ll set your own goal and deadline, and you can choose to use our standard message or customize it. Follow the tracking page to see how you and your community are helping WAM change the face of sound!   Fund-a-Need for WAM $5000 – 1 school for 1 semester of Girls on the Mic WAM has relationships with over 50 school partners around the Bay Area. Support one semester of creative technology and digital media training for girls and gender-expansive youth at one school site so students can attend for sessions free of charge. Each semester of Girls on the Mic serves an average of 500 girls – we have incredible reach and impact! You make it happen!   $2500 – Sponsor an Intern Each year WAM hosts 30 young adults who are ready to take the next step in their audio careers. WAM offers every intern hands-on, technical training in the studio, connections to audio and music industry leaders, and soft skills training to help provide a pathway to employment. $2500 supports an intern for one semester!   $1000 – Support students in WAM Academy WAM Academy is an opportunity for folks around the country to continue learning and to find community. Support seats in WAM Academy – which includes crucial industry certifications like Pro Tools and (soon!) Dolby Atmos! With your donation, WAM students have access to WAM Academy and these certifications at deep discounts! “This class has been the highlight of my professional training.” – Workshop attendee   $500 – Send a student to Girls on the Mic for a semester Girls on the Mic has provided invaluable, free, audio technology programming to girls and gender-expansive youth for 20 years. Send one student through the program for a semester. “I don’t think an opportunity like this exists anywhere else. It’s a beautiful thing. WAM is amazing.” – GOTM parent   $250 – Support an instructor traveling safely to classes for one semester WAM relies on ride-share services to provide safe travel for our instructors from the studio to the classroom with their teaching gear. Originally from Brazil, work and life choices have spanned Brazil, USA, and Chile, from building airplanes to leading operations in airlines or at a fintech startup, and giving back through mentoring new startups. Once a high school math and physics teacher, he was always thinking about ways to engage students' curiosity and connect the formulas to the real world, and found in WAM a beautiful way of doing it. Maggie Law Board Chair | Product Design Leader, Investor, Philanthropist Maggie is a seasoned tech leader, advisor, and investor. She's held design leadership and management roles at Okta, Salesforce, SAP, Oracle (née Peoplesoft), and Skyport Systems. At Salesforce, she managed UX teams responsible for the entire CRM suite (Data, Service, and Sales Cloud). Ben McKee Bassist in Imagine Dragons, Board Member at Tyler Robinson Foundation, Board Member at Kulture City Ben has been the bassist for the Grammy Award-winning band Imagine Dragons since 2009. In 2013, Imagine Dragons partnered with the Robinson family to create the Tyler Robinson Foundation in memory of a young fan who passed away from cancer. TRF helps families fighting a pediatric cancer diagnosis by assisting with the unseen costs and sacrifices that come along with such a diagnosis. Ben has served as a board member since the foundation's inception. Kulture City is a non-profit organization focused on creating a safer, more accessible world for the 1 in 6 individuals who suffer from an invisible disability, such as ptsd, autism, dementia, or strokes. Local Sirens supports artists who are creating new and innovative work that is representative of the diverse communities of the Bay Area. To date, Local Sirens has presented the work of 75+ local women and gender-expansive artists and reached over 7,500 attendees at venues including The Rickshaw Stop , The New Parish , and more. The goal of WAM’s Local Sirens series is to address the chronic gender and racial inequity in the music industry by promoting and presenting female and gender-expansive BIPOC artists and supporting them with paid commissions to create new work and artist recording residencies in WAM’s professional studios. Only 2-3% of music producers and 12% of songwriters are women/gender-expansive, and far fewer are BIPOC. Artist Recording Residencies : provide local BIPOC women and gender-expansive artists with free recording services and mentoring. Recording Residencies include an artist stipend and 1-2 weeks of recording studio time in WAM’s studios in San Francisco with a WAM engineer. The residency culminates in a live performance at one of WAM’s Local Sirens Concerts.   After completing WAM Local Sirens residencies and performances, artists have: appeared on/in Billboard, Good Morning America, ESPN, NPR signed record deals: Hollywood, Disney, Innova, Father/Daughter produced albums ranked Top 10 on NPR Alt.Latino performed at Carnegie Hall, NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts, YBCA WAM’s world-class recording studio and training facility is the only professional recording studio in the world specifically built and run entirely by women and gender-expansive staff. WAM’s unique studio is home to a rigorous internship and training environment that cultivates female and gender-expansive recording engineers and producers and provides a low-cost, high-quality recording environment for independent artists. WAM has had the pleasure of working on many award-winning projects such as GRAMMY winner Kronos Quartet, a Grammy-winning album by Angelique Kidjo, an Academy Award-nominated soundtrack to the film “Dirty Wars,” and Vietnamese composer Van-Anh Vo, chosen as one of the 50 best albums of 2013 by NPR. Her love of music and the recording arts spans 30 years as a songwriter, composer, recording engineer, and producer. Winston was signed as a recording artist, engineer and producer by Polygram and BMG, and has shared the stage with such acts as P.J. Harvey, Pixies, Throwing Muses, Flaming Lips, Fugazi, Cake, and Third Eye Blind. She has collaborated with Lenny Kaye of the Patti Smith Group and Greg Hawkes of The Cars and worked as a recording artist and producer for MainMan whose roster also included David Bowie, John Mellencamp, Lou Reed, & Iggy Pop. Winston has composed and produced theme music for KRON-TV's "First Cut" series, Banana Republic and films that have shown on BRAVO's Independent Film Channel, French Television's Cine Cinemas and major festivals all over the world. She has received an ASCAP songwriting award, Boston Music Award and Bay Area Music Award, is a voting member of the Recording Academy (The GRAMMY's) and is active in the Producers and Engineers wing. Winston has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University. She is currently serving on the Recording Academy's (Grammy's) National Task Force on Diversity and Inclusion and The Academy of Country Music's Diversity and Inclusion Task Force. Emily Jones (She/Her) Director of Finance and Operations Emily is a finance and operations leader with over 15 years of experience in the nonprofit sector. She has dedicated her career to organizations that create meaningful change in their communities. Her work has spanned a variety of mission-driven roles, each one deepening her commitment to equity, collaboration, and sustainable impact. Whether leading financial strategy, building operational systems or mentoring teams, she brings both heart and precision to everything she does. When Emily is not working, she can be found wandering the streets of San Francisco - her favorite city to get delightfully lost in-or planning her next travel adventure. She believes in curiosity, community and the kind of learning that comes from stepping off the beaten path. Andrea Partridge (She/Her) Director of Development Andrea is a business-focused development and marketing professional with deep roots in the non-profit performing arts sector. She brings a rare combination of strategic vision, data fluency, and human-centered service to her work—helping organizations maximize resources, deepen donor relationships, and achieve their missions with clarity and impact. Currently the Director of Development at Women’s Audio Mission, Andrea has previously led development efforts at the San Francisco Girls Chorus, ODC/Dance, and New Conservatory Theatre Center. Over nearly a decade, she has built and scaled individual giving programs, served as a trusted board liaison, and driven cross-functional collaboration to enhance fundraising outcomes. With expertise in CRM administration, donor analytics, and high-touch stewardship, Andrea is passionate about using data and storytelling to inspire investment in the arts and empower underrepresented voices. Her leadership reflects a commitment to equity, excellence, and the transformative power of creative communities. Kailen Sallander (She/Her) Grants & Institutional Funding Manager Kailen is an enthusiastic development professional dedicated to arts and culture in the nonprofit sector. Kailen brings several years of experience from her time as the Research & Development Manager at BAVC Media. In that role, she supported fundraising efforts across five distinct departments and led program evaluation, data collection strategy, and field-wide studies. Kailen seamlessly blends streamlined organizational metrics into concise impact findings to further funding relationships.Her research work in the arts includes field studies on the state of Bay Area Film and Media professionals’ creative and economic sustainability, as well as the status of audiovisual preservation work happening across the country’s museums, archives, libraries, and community organizations. She has presented at several conferences, community building events, and local government agencies. Kailen earned a BA in Sociology from California State University, Long Beach and previously worked with the San Mateo County government and the research institution Child Trends on data-driven projects. Abby Ha (She/Her) Development Coordinator Abby Ha is a nonprofit development professional and performing artist passionate about fostering community connection through live music and the arts. Since 2017, she has worked and volunteered with young people in her communities to educate, advocate, and create inclusive spaces that bring people together through creativity and collaboration. She holds a B.A. in Anthropology from UC Berkeley, where she researched the intersection of DIY culture, community building, and underground music scene behavior. After graduating, she joined The UC Theatre’s Concert Career Pathways workforce development program as a Community Development Intern and was later promoted to Grant Writer and Community Development Associate, supporting donor engagement, grassroots fundraising, and workforce development initiatives in the arts. Beyond her nonprofit work, Abby is a bassist who has performed in jazz bands, a dancer, and a longtime participant in community theatre, both onstage and behind the scenes as a stagehand. She continues to bring a holistic, informed perspective to her development work, believing in the transformative power of accessible education in the arts. Kathleen Myers (She/Her) Marketing and Social Media Manager Kathleen is a dynamic social media marketing leader with over eight years of experience turning creative campaigns into measurable results. She has spearheaded innovative influencer marketing strategies for top brands including L'Oréal, Natura USA, and BEARPAW, consistently pushing boundaries and surpassing expectations. Among her standout achievements, she transformed YSL Beauty’s earned media program to engage over 18K monthly influencer partnerships and led the highly successful relaunch of Urban Decay’s NAKED palette, achieving 100% sellthrough in under a week. Her passion lies in blending data-driven insights with authentic relationships to drive impactful campaign outcomes. Always eager to exchange ideas on social media marketing, campaign optimization, and digital innovation, Kathleen is a forward-thinking strategist and enthusiastic collaborator in the world of modern marketing. Beyond her work in marketing, Kathleen is a true creative at heart. Her hobbies include content creation, junk journaling, writing, and using her hands to create new beauty in the world. After work, you can find her on a run, or caught in fantasy book snuggling her cat, Daisy. We offer weekly audio training classes to girls and gender-expansive youth ages 11-18 from under-resourced communities. We partner with schools and after-school programs in SFUSD to offer free audio classes to girls and gender-expansive students ages 11-18. “I used to be quiet when it was time to share out because I was worried about people judging me, but when I’m here, I never feel like I’m being judged. Outside producers are welcome, but the actual engineering (setting up microphones, touching the gear, turning the knobs, etc.) must be performed by a WAM-certified engineer. All sessions are led by WAM’s professional staff engineers, not students or interns. You’ll be working with experienced engineers using high-end gear in beautiful sounding rooms. BOOKING & PAYMENT POLICIES MUSIC SESSIONS: For Indie Artists & Individuals Half total booking payment required in advance to confirm bookings Remaining balance due before files are released Payment via credit card, debit card, or ACH Cancellations & Reschedules 72+ hours before session: Full refund or free reschedule. 24–72 hours before session: 50% refund or one-time free reschedule. Less than 24 hours: No refund. For Corporate Clients Net 30 terms available with approved PO/contract. 10% late fee applies after 30 days. New clients may be asked for a deposit prior to service. CAN WE GET A TOUR OF THE STUDIO? Sorry, at this time we do not have the staff to provide studio tours on demand – we cannot interrupt our clients’ recording sessions. However, we have quarterly open houses which you are welcome to attend for a brief tour. To find out when our next open house is, please check our Eventbrite page . We have an extensive amount of photos of the studio on the website . HOW DO I GET MY FILES/DATA? If you are not mixing your project at WAM and will be taking the multitrack files, you must provide an empty, external, USB-A or USB-C, Apple OS X-compatible hard drive before the end of the session so the files can be transferred. We track in Pro Tools Ultimate and will deliver the session file and the audio files in that format. If you need the files prepped for mix elsewhere on a different system, that process may require booking extra time if it is an extensive project or many tracks. Make sure you budget sufficient studio time in your session to back up your files. If we have to book extra time beyond your session to deliver or backup files we will have to bill you an additional $100/hour to do that with a 1 hour minimum . Keep in mind we cannot interrupt another client’s session to transfer your files.   I AM UNDER 18, HOW DO I BOOK A SESSION? We love working with young artists! Minors must have the permission of their legal guardian before booking a session and the legal guardian must arrange payment. There must be legal guardian present during the studio sessions. If the legal guardian cannot stay for the full session, they must be present at the beginning of the session to give permission for the artist to be there, and must pick up the artist at the end of the session. SMOKING/ALCOHOL/DRUGS PROHIBITED IN THE STUDIO: Please respect that our facility is a smoke, alcohol, and drug-free zone. Held at the historic Ocean Way Recording Studios in Nashville in partnership with Belmont University on October 30 and coinciding with the Audio Engineering Society’s flagship convention in Nashville. This year, attendees will engage in workshops led by award winning engineers and producers, focusing on recording and mixing techniques, breaking down the production of a song, Dolby Atmos mixing, and more! WAMCon is an interactive recording conference series for women and gender-expansive individuals presented by Women’s Audio Mission with support from groups like Dolby, Disney, Spotify, Universal Music Group, Capitol Studios, YouTube, The Recording Academy, iZotope, Shure, sE Electronics, Universal Audio, Sweetwater, and more. WAMCon was offered live in Nashville , Los Angeles , and New York in 2019. In response to the global pandemic, WAMCon went completely virtual in 2020 and 2021, reaching 700+ attendees in over 15 countries. Since returning to in-person, WAMCon has hosted events in Nashville and Los Angeles, with the most recent event being held at the legendary Village Studios. “ These events shatter the illusion that women and POC aren’t occupying these roles, and they spark so much inspiration!! The program provides students with tuition-free, hands-on, project-based training and access to musical instruments, technology, and young women/gender-expansive mentors. GOTM partners with 50+ schools/organizations throughout the Bay Area to provide after-school programming year-round. WAM Academy A formalized training program to gain new skills & get a head start on your career. By the end of the workshop, students will have gained the knowledge and skills necessary to produce audio recordings and mixes. These courses are taught by qualified recording engineers and aim to equip students with the necessary knowledge of audio production, recording, and mixing. Level 1 Basic Audio Production course: Uncover the fascinating realm of sound through our comprehensive 7-class foundational series! This course provides a solid foundation for understanding the physics and science behind sound, ensuring you gain essential skills for basic recording, production, and digital technologies. Level 2 – Studio Recording, Production, Mixing, and Signal Processing: Join us for an exclusive opportunity to put theory into action in WAM’s professional recording studios as you delve into the intricacies of studio consoles and processors, all within a low-pressure and encouraging community environment. Pro Tools WAM’s Pro Tools Fundamentals classes introduce concepts and principles, covering everything an individual needs to know to complete a basic Pro Tools project, from initial setup to final mixdown. These courses are strongly recommended for those enrolled in WAM Academy . Pro Tools Fundamentals PT101 : Introduces fundamental Pro Tools concepts and principles, covering everything an individual needs to know to complete a basic Pro Tools project, from initial setup to final mixdown. Pro Tools Fundamentals PT110: Expands upon the Pro Tools Fundamentals PT101 course and includes using MIDI, virtual instruments, and additional recording and mixing tools. Workshops WAM provides hands-on training in audio engineering, the recording arts and creative technology to over 350 women and gender-expansive people every year in a world-class recording studio with award-winning female and gender-expansive instructors. WAM graduates have been placed in positions at Dolby Labs, Pixar, Electronic Arts, Google, Sennheiser, NPR, Pandora, SFJazz, Stern Grove Festival, Animal Planet, Comedy Central, Rickshaw Stop, El Rio and many other professional venues as well as securing credits on recordings by legendary artists such as Beyonce’s Band, Mary J. Blige/Hillary Clinton Interview, Denise Perrior, Kronos Quartet, David Sedaris, St. Lawrence String Quartet, Angelique Kidjo (Grammy win), Soundtrack to the film “Dirty Wars” (Academy Award nomination), Pamela Z, Sean Dorsey Dance. Internship Program Women’s Audio Mission recruits and selects intern cohorts 2-3 times a year of female and gender-expansive individuals looking to start their careers and receive invaluable training, mentorship, and education at our studios. Interns are mentors to the students in our Girls on the Mic program, assist on recording sessions in our recording studio, and have invaluable training opportunities for live sound shadowing for WAM and WAM partners’ events. Through an application process, we choose 30 interns per year out of a pool of applicants from all over the US. Interns are introduced to WAM’s extensive network and recommended for positions with WAM partners and connections such as Dolby Labs, ESPN, Sweetwater, various recording studios, and more! WAMcon WAMcons are interactive recording conference series for women and gender-expansive individuals. Featuring top leaders in the industry – including award-winning music producers, recording engineers, songwriters, beatmakers, and record executives involved in making the music you love the most – WAMcons offer workshops, networking, and discussions covering topics like recording techniques, mixing, mastering, vocal production, songwriting, beat-making, the music business, music licensing, and more! Local Sirens Local Sirens: Women in Music Performance Series is a free, all-ages quarterly performance series that features exceptional Bay Area women and gender-expansive musicians and performers. Local Sirens supports predominately BIPOC artists who are creating new and innovative work that is representative of the diverse communities of the Bay Area. Launched in 2014, Local Sirens has promoted the work of 120+ women and gender-expansive artists and reached 8,500+ people through free Bay Area concerts. Each year WAM celebrates and promotes the careers of 40+ women and gender-expansive artists a year (90% BIPOC/86% low-income) with paid performance opportunities at premier venues (Dolby, YBCA, Brava, etc) and virtually to audiences of 2,000+. A formalized, hands-on training program comprising two courses, Level 1 and Level 2, designed to help you acquire new skills and jumpstart your career in audio. In Level 1, you will learn audio fundamentals like signal flow, microphone mechanics, and even learn to solder your own XLR cables! In the more intermediate Level 2 class, you will gain hands on experience recording in world class studios ( WAM Studio in San Francisco and Gold-Diggers in Los Angeles), and study the anatomy of mixing in Pro Tools. By the end of the program, you’ll possess the knowledge and skills needed to craft professional-grade audio recordings and mixes. Upon completion of the program, participants will possess the knowledge and skills essential to any audio career path, whether it be on stage, in the studio, or even just to improve the quality of your own personal projects. These courses are taught by qualified recording engineers and aim to equip students with the necessary knowledge of audio production, recording, mixing, and truly understanding the science behind it all in a way that is fun and accessible to all skill levels. Level 2: Intermediate Studio Recording & Mixing Course Unlock your recording potential and put your skills into action in WAM’s professional recording studios. Immerse yourself in the art of studio consoles and processors while surrounded by a supportive and encouraging community. This intermediate-level course is designed to take your recording and mixing expertise to new heights in a professional studio setting. If you’re already familiar with signal flow, microphone types, and basic recording and mixing, this course is the perfect opportunity for you to take your skills to the next level. This 9-class series covers: Large Format Console Signal Flow & Patchbays Auxes & Inserts Advanced Microphone placement and techniques for mic’ing instruments A real, student-led recording session! EQ, Dynamic, and Time-based processing Editing, Vocal Comping, and the anatomy of a mix in Pro Tools Level 2 Prerequisites: Academy Level 1 or equivalent basic recording training and some experience with DAWs is strongly recommended. Attendees should understand signal flow, types of microphones, and a basic understanding of recording and mixing going into this course. Instructor Spotlight: Meet the WAM Academy Instructors Bri Holland (she/they) is a vocal producer, audio engineer, singer, songwriter, and music educator based in Los Angeles, CA. Originally from southwestern Pennsylvania, Bri developed her passion for music through school choir and community theater. She later studied at the University of Chicago, gaining recognition in a cappella communities as a director, arranger, and engineer. Notable career highlights include vocal engineering for the 2023 Grammy-nominated Broadway revival cast recording of Sweeney Todd, vocal production for animated series like DreamWorks’ Trolls: TrollsTopia and Madagascar: A Little Wild, and engineering for films such as tick, tick… BOOM!, Dear Evan Hansen, and Vivo. Bri was nominated for a 2022 MPSE Golden Reel Award for her sound editing work on tick, tick… BOOM! Her diverse portfolio also includes projects with artists like Jennifer Nettles, Sadie, and the cast of AZUL. Bri’s vocals have appeared on projects such as The Weeknd’s Dawn FM, American Pie: Girls’ Rules, Vivo, Wednesday, Minx, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, and more. Her songwriting has been featured on numerous episodes of Nickelodeon’s Alvinnn!!! And the Chipmunks. As an educator, Bri has worked as a Teaching Artist with the Young Musicians Foundation, as a Fellowship Mentor and Engineer with the LA LGBT Center, and as the Music Artist in Residence with the Archer School for Girls. Rooted in abolitionist pedagogy, she is committed to amplifying the voices of girls, women, gender-expansive individuals, and creatives of all marginalized identities and backgrounds. Arielle Flinkman (She/Her) is an audio engineer, educator and DJ based in San Francisco, CA. Arielle received her BA from the University of San Francisco in 2014 with a degree in Media Studies and a focus on film production. From there, her love for film and arts exhibition led her to becoming the Operations Manager of the historic Roxie Theater in San Francisco, where she developed a love for working A/V and film projection behind the scenes and has since worked the Bay Area film festival circuit doing operations and tech at festivals like SFFILM, NVFF, and SF Sketchfest. In 2018, Arielle decided to take a chance on her love for DJing, music, and audio technology and began taking audio production courses at City College of San Francisco, obtaining certificates in studio recording and live sound. She has since honed her skills as a live sound engineer at venues such as El Rio, Amado’s, and the Brava Theater, and became the Lead Engineer and Studio Manager at WAM Studios in 2023. Since her time at WAM, Arielle has engineered sessions for artists like Diana Gameros, August Lee Stevens, and Pleeay. As a proud WAM intern alumni and a longtime lover of education, Arielle became WAM’s SF Adult Education Manager in 2025, shifting her focus to teaching and organizing WAM’s year-round offering of educational events and workshops. WHO WE ARE Women’s Audio Mission is a San Francisco-based nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of women and gender-expansive individuals in music production and the recording arts – a field where women are critically underrepresented (less than 5%). WAM seeks to change the face of sound by providing hands-on training, experience, career counseling, and job placement in music technology and audio production. WAM believes that women and gender-expansive individuals’ mastery of music technology and inclusion in the production process will expand the vision and voice of media and popular culture.
