Here in Los Angeles, street gangs became known for the illegal narcotics they distrib-uted and the violence they unleashed to protect their product. In the commission of these acts, they incurred the risk of arrest and lengthy incarceration as a by-product of doing business. The city’s major Black gangs, the…

In Black communities across California — from Compton and Gardena to Inglewood and Carson — they have been economic anchors. They offer steady, dignified work in neighborhoods that have too often been starved of it. In addition, cardrooms generate hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenue that funds police departments, fire stations, senior centers, and youth programs. That is why we’re sounding the alarm about Attorney General Rob Bonta’s new cardroom regulations, which went into effect on April 1st. Under the guise of regulatory reform, Bonta’s office is pushing new rules that amount to a death sentence for cardrooms. The centerpiece is a “blackjack ban” targeting the card games that account for as much as half of some cardroom’s total revenues. An economic analysis published by Bonta’s own department projects cardroom losses approaching $500 million. Those are not abstract numbers; they are paychecks and tax receipts. And while our communities absorb that blow, powerful tribal casino interests — which already hold a near-monopoly on gaming in this state — stand to pocket the difference. Tribal gaming operations, which pay no local taxes to our cities, are positioned to become even wealthier as a direct result of a policy pushed by the Office of the Attorney General. We do not use the word “giveaway” lightly. But when 30,000 workers — the overwhelming majority of them people of color — are put at risk so that a politically connected industry can capture their market share, what else do you call it? The Newsletter That Gets It Every Thursday morning, Our Weekly connects you to what’s happening—from city developments to cultural trends—all through the lens of Los Angeles’ African-American experience. Sign up There can be no dispute that the tribal casinos are the driving force behind these regulations. Tribal gaming interests tried and failed to win this fight at the ballot box, where California voters have had their say more than once. So, they found another route: the AG’s Office. The rules that took effect April 1st did not come with adequate public process, notice, or regard for the communities most affected. In fact, more than 1,000 Californians signed a petition asking AG Bonta to withdrawal the regulations. California families and city leaders were given almost no time to absorb or plan for a hit of this magnitude. The damage is not theoretical. Majority-Black and Brown cities depend on cardroom tax revenue to fund basic city services. When those funds dry up, the cuts will come — and they will come for the things our most vulnerable residents rely on most. Senior centers. After-school programs. Youth scholarships. Consider Gardena — a city with a large Black population that has long called this community home. Gardena’s city manager issued a warning that Hustler Casino and Lucky Lady Casino together account for more than 8 percent of Gardena’s entire general fund and projected a $7 to $8 million annual revenue loss stemming from the regulations, with “the potential for a fiscal emergency.” And it’s not just Black communities. Commerce and Bell Gardens, both predominantly Hispanic and home to two of the three largest cardrooms in California, have declared a state of fiscal emergency due to the regulations. Commerce has even advanced a ¼-cent sales tax measure to address the anticipated budget shortfall. Commerce Mayor Kevin Lainez said, “With the State threatening our cardroom revenues, and the County looking to take more sales tax, the City must find new ways to fund the services our community relies on.” We have long understood that our communities must be vigilant about who holds power in Sacramento and what they do with it. This decision, which transfers economic power away from working-class Black and Brown communities toward wealthy, untaxed tribal gaming corporations — demands accountability. We call on Attorney General Bonta to halt the implementation of these rules. Black communities in California have survived disinvestment, redlining, and economic exclusion. We have built institutions and livelihoods in the spaces that others overlooked. We will not watch quietly as those livelihoods are traded away in a backroom deal dressed up as regulation. In her Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit filed Feb. 20, Crowley alleges retaliation in violation of the Labor Code and retaliation in violation of the state Constitution. The suit seeks unspecified damages. In court papers filed Wednesday with Judge Kristin S. Escalante, the City Attorney’s Office notes that its response to Crowley’s suit was due April 9. However, given that the determination was made that private attorneys should handle the defense, scheduling issues have made it impossible for the City Council to select the law firm from among the bidders until after the June 2 primary election. The Newsletter That Gets It Every Thursday morning, Our Weekly connects you to what’s happening—from city developments to cultural trends—all through the lens of Los Angeles’ African-American experience. Sign up The City is asking that the time to respond to the Crowley suit be extended to June 27 and Crowley’s attorney is not objecting to the delay. Crowley was removed as LAFD chief by Bass on Feb. 21, 2025, although Crowley is still with the LAFD as an assistant chief in the Valley Bureau. Bass accused Crowley of leadership failures during the January 2025 windstorm that led to the deadly Palisades Fire, and also accused of refusing to prepare an after-action report on the firefight. The mayor also accused Crowley of failing to deploy 1,000 firefighters who “could have been on duty” the morning the fire erupted. Bass also contended in interviews that Crowley failed to inform her of the fire danger presented by forecasted Santa Ana winds – despite those warnings being widely publicized by the National Weather Service and in media reports for days in advance. Crowley’s lawsuit, however, lays blame for the fire at the feet of the mayor and city leaders, saying the city historically failed to properly fund the LAFD, leaving the agency under-manned and backlogged in the maintenance of vehicles and other equipment. “Crowley brings this case based on the actions of Mayor Karen Bass, who orchestrated a campaign of retaliation to conceal the extent to which Bass undermined public safety and transparency,” according to Crowley’s lawsuit. The suit contends Crowley submitted “numerous detailed reports” annually to city leaders, including Bass complaining of aging infrastructure, shrinking staff and rising emergency calls that demanded attention. “Despite these warnings, and despite Crowley’s request for an increased budget to address these issues, Mayor Bass and her administration cut the LAFD’s operating budget for fiscal year 2024-2025 by $17.6 million and eliminated positions critical to maintaining fire engines, trucks, and ambulances,” according to the suit. The lawsuit also slams Bass’ decision to leave the country in the days prior to the severe Santa Ana wind event for a diplomatic trip to Ghana – a trip she took without notifying Crowley. “When the Palisades Fire erupted, Bass – then out of the country – initially praised the department’s preparedness, even issuing a press release highlighting its deployment strategy,” the suit states. “But as criticism mounted over her absence and over her decision to cut the operating budget for LAFD despite evidence that LAFD needed more and not fewer resources, Bass reversed course. She sought to avoid accountability by shifting blame and lying –including falsely claiming that she was not aware of the nationally anticipated weather event, falsely claiming that the LAFD’s budget was not cut, and falsely claiming that LAFD’s resources would have supported an additional 1,000 firefighters to fight the blaze – claims contradicted by public records and Bass’ own prior statements.” “These false statements were not mistakes but part of a deliberate strategy to divert scrutiny from Bass’ decisions and to avoid accountability.” In response to the suit, Bass’ senior adviser Yusef Robb previously issued a statement saying, “There is nothing new here. Ms. Crowley was removed from her post for her failure to deploy in advance and her decision to send 1,000 firefighters home instead of keeping them on duty on the morning the fires broke out. This lawsuit has no merit.” Crowley in 2025 appealed her removal as chief to the City Council, but the council stood behind Bass, rejecting the appeal in a 13-2 vote. The Palisades Fire burned more than 23,000 acres, killed 12 people and destroyed thousands of structures. Related Leave a comment Cancel reply Your email address will not be published. The video is supposed to represent how the community feels about the handling of the Palisades fires and how Bass and Newsom are elites who benefit from the fire while victims, like Pratt and his family. A spokesperson for the Pratt campaign told Newsweek via email, “We didn’t make it. We’ve only produced one ad, and it went viral. Spencer is so popular that people all over the world are making tribute videos on their own. I think the other candidates are just upset that they’re not popular enough to have fan videos like that.” The Newsletter That Gets It Every Thursday morning, Our Weekly connects you to what’s happening—from city developments to cultural trends—all through the lens of Los Angeles’ African-American experience. Sign up Critics suggest that by framing himself as a wildfire survivor battling entrenched elites, Pratt has tapped into voter frustration. Critics also suggest the ad borrows heavily from Donald Trump’s playbook of incendiary language and fear-based imagery. Pratt’s background is centered around reality television, best known for his role on MTV’s “The Hills,” and is regarded in pop culture as being a blueprint for the reality TV villain trope. Pratt’s political rise is rooted in personal tragedy: losing his home in the 2025 Pacific Palisades fire, which killed 12 and caused billions in damage. He has used this experience to criticize Bass’s leadership during the disaster, framing his campaign as a mission to expose systemic failures. While registered as a Republican, Pratt is running as an independent in a heavily Democratic city, positioning himself as a nonpartisan reformer focused on public safety, homelessness, and government accountability. While Pratt took the social media route, at- tacking Bass, Bass took the direct approach in her response. ‘Well, honestly, before this, I had never heard of Spencer Pratt,’ Bass said. ‘The thing I am concerned about is I feel like he’s exploiting the grief of people in the Palisades. And I think that’s reprehensible. He is about his own celebrity.’ She delivered the comments defending her leadership during the catastrophic 2025 wildfires, but they immediately triggered outrage, particularly because Pratt himself is among those who lost everything in the blaze. Bass suggested Pratt lacked a basic understanding of governance, saying he “could benefit by a basic civics course,” arguing she had not seen “a proposal for a solution or a remedy” from him. Bass also recently received a major boost to her reelection campaign with former Vice President Kamala Harris endorsing her. “Mayor Karen Bass is the leader Los Angeles needs right now. She has done what so many said couldn’t be done — the first-ever two-year decline in homelessness, reducing crime to levels this city hasn’t seen since the 1960s, and refusing to back down when the federal government came after our neighbors,” she said in a statement. As we are a few months away from the November election, according to polls, 60 percent of voters are undecided between the candidates, which also includes Nithya Raman. Raman became the first South Asian woman elected to the LA City Council in 2020, defeating an incumbent candidate. Related Leave a comment Cancel reply Your email address will not be published. The California Black Power Network (CBPN) hosted a gubernatorial forum to introduce candidates and allow them to speak directly to the Black community. Two major questions emerged during the forum, centering on rent control and reform of California’s legal system. Butch Ware and Antonio Villaraigosa Tom Steyer and Matt Mahan The Newsletter That Gets It Every Thursday morning, Our Weekly connects you to what’s happening—from city developments to cultural trends—all through the lens of Los Angeles’ African-American experience. Sign up Ramsey Robinson and Dr. Nancy Young What are your thoughts on rent control, and do you support other pathways to affordable housing? Ramsey Robinson: I absolutely support rent control. I want to extend that to freezing evictions and banning corporate landlords and those who are taking advantage of low-income communities. I have a high school freshman now, who’s being tasked with getting a job to help the family because rent is too expensive for them. We have 187 thousand homeless people in California, yet we have 1.2 million empty homes. Something has to change. Dr. Nancy Young: As governor, I was an advocate for statewide consistency to make sure that every homeowner and business owner has unified standards that protect them from predatory rent increases. My administration would prioritize three major pathways: direct subsidies, streamlining state permits to turn underutilized land into affordable housing, and creating state-level credit to help cover rent increases. Tom Steyer: Affordability is the number one issue for all Californians, and that’s why I’m strongly in favor of rent control and would fully enforce the Tenant Protection Act. I also want to expand the renters’ tax credit to put more money back in renters’ hands. Matt Mahan: I would restrict private equity firms from buying homes in bulk and selling them for higher prices. Butch Ware: The housing problem isn’t about supply; it’s about financial allocation, and it starts with taxing BlackRock and other private equity firms into selling these vacant units and putting a stop to vacant ghost apartments and houses. I believe in the housing-first method, which means we need to fill up houses and units we already have instead of building more to sit on the market. Antonio Villaraigosa: I support a renters’ tax credit and believe that the governor has to fix this broken system. I had a long history of working and correcting the system during my time as mayor and would continue at a higher level as governor. Do you believe that restorative justice tools and mechanisms have a place in California’s criminal justice system, and what actions would you take to close empty California prisons? Ware: I’m an abolitionist, and I believe in the abolition of ICE and the police, and I firmly support the establishment of community-based policing, and I look forward to the day we can close down Pelican Bay. There is a direct line between slavery and the industrial prison system. There are more Black males in prison today than there were in slavery. We must move on from this. Steyer: I have worked consistently and strongly in supporting rehabilitative justice since denouncing my support of the prison system 20 years ago. I started a Black nonprofit that fights for equity and social justice, and the work has yielded repercussions for officers who abused their power. I fully support getting rid of the concept of life without parole. Mahan: California’s three strikes law has devastated many Black families, leading to a 12:1 sentencing disparity between Black and white sentences. I fully support youth intervention programs as a diversion from the criminal justice system. Robinson: Restorative justice on every level of our justice system needs reform, and it starts with community authority over the local police. We also need to grant clemency to the elders in prison who are long overdue for their freedom to be returned to them. Young: As governor, I would champion restorative justice and community-led accountability. We need to move away from a system that discards people and toward one that heals and teaches. Villaraigosa: I absolutely believe in restorative justice. I was part of the coalition against police abuse in the 90s and was also against California’s three-strike rule. I have been at the forefront of this issue and would start reforming the legal system as soon as I get elected. June 2 is election day, and registered voters can find the closest polling stations near them by visiting lavote.gov. Akilah Weber Pierson (D-San Diego) aimed at reforming California’s gang databases — primarily the CalGang system — has advanced out of the Senate Public Safety Committee with a 5-1 vote. Senate Bill (SB) 1210, introduced by the chair of the California Legislative Black Caucus (CLBC), seeks to address systemic inaccuracies, racial bias, and a lack of transparency that, according to the author, jeopardize the civil liberties of thousands of Californians — particularly Black and Latino individuals. The measure now heads to the Senate Appropriations Committee for consideration. “SB 1210 amends the Penal Code to make all gang databases, regardless of whether they are shared or not, subject to the Legislature’s previous and active reforms, including the Department of Justice’s oversight and regulations,” Weber Pierson said. The Newsletter That Gets It Every Thursday morning, Our Weekly connects you to what’s happening—from city developments to cultural trends—all through the lens of Los Angeles’ African-American experience. Sign up A key provision of the bill removes the restrictive term “shared gang database,” ensuring that state regulations apply to all gang databases, including those not accessed by external agencies. The legislation would require full compliance with Department of Justice regulations by Jan. 1, 2027. The bill builds on findings from a 2016 state audit, requested by then-Assemblymember and current Secretary of State Shirley Weber, which identified widespread inaccuracies and weak oversight in shared gang databases. Audits of the CalGang system revealed that law enforcement agencies relied on unreliable data, failed to purge records after five years, and included individuals without sufficient evidence. The database even listed toddlers “as young as three years old,” Weber Pierson said. Following reforms that mandated audits for shared databases, some agencies shifted to internal systems not subject to the same level of oversight. Weber Pierson said SB 1210 is designed to close those loopholes by requiring all databases to meet the standards established under AB 90, the Fair and Accurate Gang Database Act of 2017. “Being wrongfully placed in a gang database can have serious life-altering consequences, which is why the audit became an issue in the first place,” Weber Pierson said. “Including police scrutiny, higher bail, harsher sentencing through gang enhancement, barriers to employment, and now the risk of deportation.” According to the California Department of Justice’s 9th Annual Report, the CalGang database contained 9,948 records as of Sept. 30, 2025. That figure represents a significant decline from earlier years, when the database held more than 100,000 records. Between 2017 and 2022, CalGang identified disparities in 103,840 entries. The database is 94 percent male and disproportionately composed of Latinos (66 percent) and Black individuals (23 percent). “Unfortunately, we are now seeing many law enforcement agencies that have chosen to disregard the legislature’s reforms by ending their relationships with the use of CalGang,” Weber Pierson said. “The number of law enforcement agencies entering records into CalGang has dropped from 214 to just 19. There is no evidence that these agencies stopped gang intelligence altogether.” Opponents of the bill, including the California Police Chiefs Association (CPCA), argue that the measure could hinder law enforcement efforts. Jonathan Feldman, a legislative advocate for CPCA, told the Senate Public Safety Committee that gang databases provide officers with immediate access to critical information, including photographs, tattoos, vehicle descriptions, and known associates. He said the tools are essential for tracing suspects, identifying victims, and supporting criminal investigations. “I understand the shift to the local databases, not as an attempt to circumvent the oversight, but in terms of doing active investigations and needing to record that information on a daily basis,” Feldman said. “There is a need to develop those leads, collect that information without going into a formal database system.” Feldman added, “I do think it’s difficult to take those AB 90 CalGang standards and apply them to all gang databases. A lot of these are informal, in process, and developing investigations.” Supporters of the bill argue that disparities in the database reflect broader systemic issues. According to the Department of Justice, Black individuals are disproportionately represented due to factors such as concentrated policing in minority communities, subjective inclusion criteria, and data inaccuracies. Weber Pierson also shared a personal account during the hearing, noting that her brother, who is 6 feet and 5 inches tall, was nearly added to the gang database in San Diego based solely on his race and physical appearance.”He has never been affiliated with a gang in his life,” Weber Pierson said. Sean Garcia-Leys, executive director of the Peace and Justice Law Center in Santa Ana, testified in support of the bill, noting that compliance with oversight requirements is feasible. “Many others have opted out to avoid oversight,” Garcia-Leys said. “SB 1210 addresses this gap. It does not expand the law or rebalance public safety and civil rights. It simply ensures that all gang databases share their local (data), according to the standards the Legislature sets.” Related Tagged: AB 90 , CalGang database , CalGang system , California Department of Justice’s 9th Annual Report , California Legislative Black Caucus , CLBC , Department of Justice , executive director of the Peace and Justice Law Cente Inglewood native serves aboard one of the world’s largest warships – Our Weekly News You Can Relate To Our Weekly provides insights on local and national news, culture, and lifestyle, from people who know your community best. Blake graduated from Lawndale High School in 2007. The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Inglewood. The Newsletter That Gets It Every Thursday morning, Our Weekly connects you to what’s happening—from city developments to cultural trends—all through the lens of Los Angeles’ African-American experience. Sign up “Growing up around different types of people in a fast-paced environment like Inglewood taught me the importance of resilience, a strong work ethic, and how to communicate effectively with people from all walks of life,” Blake said. “I applied that ‘hustle’ to my Navy career early on by staying resourceful and solution-oriented, ensuring that even under pressure, I build and keep the professional relationships necessary to meet the mission and support my shipmates.” Blake joined the Navy nine years ago. Today, Blake serves as a logistics specialist. “Coming from Inglewood, California, I was inspired to step outside of my comfort zone to travel the world and to pursue a life of adventure and personal growth that would shape my character for years to come,” Blake said. “I also wanted to represent my community on a global scale and prove that the resilience I learned at home could make me an asset to the United States Navy.” Aircraft carriers are the centerpiece of America’s naval forces. For more than 100 years, they have projected power, sustained sea control, bolstered deterrence, provided humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and maintained enduring commitments worldwide. Carl Vinson returned in August 2025 from a nine-month deployment to the U.S. 3rd, 5th, and 7th Fleet areas of operations, during which it conducted freedom of navigation operations, multinational exercises with U.S. allies and partners, and combat operations in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. Back in its homeport of San Diego, Carl Vinson remains a combat-ready force dedicated to protecting and defending the United States. Among the largest warships in the world, Carl Vinson is longer than three football fields at 1,092 feet. The ship is 252 feet wide and weighs more than 100,000 tons. More than 5,000 sailors serve aboard these self-contained mobile airports. According to Navy officials, aircraft carriers are versatile and have unique mission capabilities that make them a more strategic asset for the Navy than fixed-site bases. They are often the first response in a global crisis because of their ability to operate freely in international waters anywhere in the world’s oceans. In addition, no other weapon system can deploy and operate forward with a full-sized aircraft carrier’s speed, endurance, agility, and combat capability of its air wing. “The might of this ship doesn’t just come from its advanced technology, but from the skillful, resilient, and courageous men and women who serve aboard,” said Capt. Joshua Wenker, commanding officer of Carl Vinson. “Our sailors have always been, and will always be, our greatest asset. Their hard work, dedication, and relentless pursuit of excellence ensure that we execute the mission aboard America’s Favorite Carrier with pride and precision every single day.” Blake has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service. “I am most proud of my promotion to first-class petty officer within my first five years of service,” Blake said. “To achieve this milestone, I dedicated myself to mastering the logistics specialist rating and took on leadership roles early in my career to mentor junior sailors and streamline command operations. I am proud of this accomplishment because it reflects my commitment to excellence and my ability to adapt quickly to the high standards and responsibilities required of a Navy leader.” This year, the Navy is commemorating its contribution to the nation’s defense as the United States celebrates 250 years of independence. According to Navy officials, for more than 250 years, the Navy has sailed the globe defending freedom and protecting prosperity. With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber-optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America. “To me, serving in the Navy means embracing a life of discipline, resilience, and purpose while transforming my ‘hometown hustle’ into a professional career that makes a tangible impact on maritime operations,” Blake said. “It is an opportunity to be a reliable leader for my shipmates and a representative of my community, allowing me to contribute to a global mission while continuously bettering myself for the sake of my command and my family.” Blake is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible. “I want to thank my mother, my uncle, and my grandmother for their unwavering support,” Blake said. “They have consistently spoken life into me during my lowest moments and helped me become the upbeat sailor I am today. I also want to give a special shout-out to Master Chief Logistics Specialist Green, Chief Logistics Specialist Cortez, and Chief Yeoman Glenn for their mentorship and for always grounding me and reminding me of the mission, both in life and in my military career.” Related Tagged: Alyssa Blake , Government , La Local News , lawndale high school , National news Leave a comment Cancel reply Your email address will not be published. For the first time, users will be able to track changes in SNAP participation quarter by quarter alongside 40 other Dashboard health and economic metrics, offering a clear view of district-lev-el changes over time. “Our mission on the Congressional side is to provide data on measures of health and be the drivers of health to keep participants informed of the different measures and policies of their district,” Dr. Lorna E. Thorpe, chair of the Department of Population Health at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, said. “We think it’s more beneficial to have timely local data on SNAP participation more than ever before, because of the ever-changing metrics.” The new SNAP metric measures households participating in SNAP with corresponding data from the American Community Survey and the Department of Agriculture of the Food and Nutrition Service, which helps them provide SNAP estimates every quarter. “This helps us to record accurate data of policy impact and gives the community the necessary information to make changes in their personal lives and also hold district leaders responsible,” Thorpe said. The Newsletter That Gets It Every Thursday morning, Our Weekly connects you to what’s happening—from city developments to cultural trends—all through the lens of Los Angeles’ African-American experience. Sign up According to Congressional District Health Dashboard data, in 2025 Q3, just over one in six households across the country participated in SNAP. Of the 42 million Americans receiving SNAP each month, 70 percent are elderly, disabled, or children. Over 75 percent of SNAP participants are also enrolled in Medicaid, including nearly 90 percent of child SNAP participants, demonstrating how eligibility and need overlap across the two programs. Research indicates that individuals receiving SNAP benefits experience lower rates of food insecurity than people who are eligible but not receiving benefits. Food insecurity is associated with worse health outcomes, including mental health disorders like depression and anxiety, as well as chronic health conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Food insecurity also complicates an individual’s ability to manage illness and is linked to higher healthcare costs. “We know that SNAP benefits lift families out of poverty and provide a major boost to the economy. Dr. Giridhar Mallya, senior policy officer of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, said. “SNAP is prov-en to uplift communities in a multitude of ways and relieves pressure on local food banks. We need SNAP, and the Trump ad-ministration policy changes have made it hard for participants to stay enrolled or be actual functioning members of society.” Last summer, Congress passed HR1—also known as the One Big Beautiful Bill—which cut almost $1 trillion from critical health and food safety nets and imposed new eligibility requirements. The budget of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) was slashed by $187 billion through 2034, the largest cut to the program since it began in 1964. Between the passage of that law in July 2025 and January 2026, more than 3 million people have lost SNAP benefits. Some of the changes Trump has made to SNAP include: 1. A 20-hour-per-week work requirement to receive benefits. 2. Removed Exemption for Veterans 3. Removed Exemption for People Expe-riencing Homelessness 4. Removed Exemption for People For-merly in Foster Care 5. Decreased Future Benefits Related Leave a comment Cancel reply Your email address will not be published. Congress is considering changing the 14th Amendment per the request of President Donald Trump in order to end birthright citizenship. This possible ruling is another attack on immigrants that will have catastrophic consequences for the American people. The first problem America may run into if this ban passes, according to political experts, is the domino effect it would have on the economy. Trump’s entire rally on ending birthright citizenship is because, according to him and his supporters, immigrants are taking American jobs and committing heinous crimes. Neither of those claims is exactly true. While immigrants do come to America and are hired for jobs, most of the time it’s jobs Americans don’t want, which makes it easy for them to secure employment. Agricultural, janitorial, and other low-wage jobs are usually occupied by immigrants in order to help them sustain their footing in America. Second, the economy would fall further into debt due to the shortage of skilled labor. Beneficiaries of birthright citizenship noted that immigrants have contributed $7.7 trillion to the U.S. economy through their income between 1975 and 2074, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This includes a projected $1 trillion by future children not yet born. Their economic contributions would be most at risk if President Donald Trump’s executive order is upheld this June by the Supreme Court. The Newsletter That Gets It Every Thursday morning, Our Weekly connects you to what’s happening—from city developments to cultural trends—all through the lens of Los Angeles’ African-American experience. Sign up “Our working-age population is only growing through immigration today,” he said. A ban on birthright citizenship would diminish the working-age population even further, said Dr. Phillip Connor, research fellow at the Center for Migration and Development at Princeton University. “Future losses could be substantial if the policy changes. The labor force is expected to be shortened by 400,000 skilled workers, estimated Connor. Dr. Julia Gelatt, associate director of the U.S. Immigration Policy Program at the Migration Policy Institute, said the proposed ban could expand, rather than reduce, the unauthorized population by creating generations of people born in the US without legal status. “The unauthorized immigrant population would actually grow significantly by 2.7 million more over the next 20 years and 5.4 million more over 50 years,” she said. She added that about 255,000 children per year could be born without legal status. “The broader reality of this is that repealing birthright citizenship would create a self-perpetuating class excluded from social membership,” Gelatt said. She added that these children would face significant barriers throughout their lives. “This means that kids would be growing up in the United States without access to Medicaid, to food assistance, to other public benefits,” Gelatt said. “They would have constrained access to higher education, and more importantly, they would grow up knowing that they aren’t able to work legally in the United States.” Reuters/Ipsos conducted a poll on birthright citizenship, receiving close to 4,600 responses. The study revealed that 64 percent of Americans don’t support ending birthright citizenship, compared to 32 percent who favor eliminating it as President Donald Trump ordered in January 2025. Political parties were divided on the issue, with only 9 percent of Democrats believing birthright citizenship should be terminated. However, Republicans are split on the matter, with 62 percent favoring an end to birthright citizenship and 36 percent supporting keeping it. In the commission of these acts, they incurred the risk of arrest and lengthy incarceration as a by-product of doing business. The city’s major Black gangs, the Crips and their arch-rivals the Bloods, have expanded their horizons to include other, less punitive ways of making a living. “It is remarkable that a prison inmate coordinated with others on the outside to distribute over 100 pounds of methamphetamine into the community. But that apparently was not enough: he also con-spired to pursue over half a billion dollars in federal tax credits that were meant to help struggling businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said U.S. Attorney U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert on the arrest of Kristopher Thomas for drug trafficking and tax fraud in February 2024. One of the ways they made a living is the practice of supervising sexual activity for the immediate payment in money or other valuables, i.e. prostitution which in modern times is known as sex work. In short, they were pimps. No less legal in the view of the law, it nonetheless proved to be attractive for the comparatively lenient prison sentences incurred in the commission of these crimes. The Newsletter That Gets It Every Thursday morning, Our Weekly connects you to what’s happening—from city developments to cultural trends—all through the lens of Los Angeles’ African-American experience. Sign up Pimping, legally known as pandering, carries lighter sentences punishable three, four, or six years in state prison in comparison to other offenses, according to California’s Penal Code 266h. Specifically a felony, pandering is much less harsh than the possibility of decades of hard time incurred in drug distribution. California has the distinction of being the centerpiece of the I-5 freeway, a transnational hub stretching 1,400 miles across Canada, the United States, and Mexico. It is also the pipeline of the “West Coast Track,” a criminal pathway for narcotics and prostitution trafficking, two intertwined illicit enterprises. It’s local outposts include Lankershim Boulevard in the San Fernando Valley, and South Los Angeles’ Figueroa Street and it’s infamous Figueroa Corridor, a 4-mile stretch known as a major hub for sex trafficking throughout the late twentieth century. With the coming of a new millennium, this area became attractive to local gangs drawn to the abundance of motels along the thoroughfare, conducive for the sex trade. The World’s Oldest Profession gets Twisted “Now you got girl pimps, too,” said ‘Tonio,’ a lifelong native remembers the old days and shifting times when things went from bad to worse. “Youngsters” hit upon the oldest profession prostitution, inserting themselves in the age old position of money managers–essentially pimps–since the area was within their turf. As time progressed they targeted minors, especially refugees from the probation and social services who were emotionally fragile. Tonio speaks of an acquaintance in the neighborhood, a young girl who fell victim to the streets as a teen who was about 14 years-old, according to ‘Tonio’ “She was a pretty girl. That ‘crystal’ did her in like that. Quick. Took her body over. Destroyed her,” said Tonio. This unfortunate first hit the track on Figueroa before her “handler” moved her to relatively less competitive pastures in 2024. “Some dude had her up on Crenshaw after they found out she was turned out.” The appearance of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic affected the legal and illegal economy. Individuals employed in legitimate work often were displaced, and resorted to drug trafficking. Others whose income dwindled were made vulnerable for exploitation as well, this may explain the increase in underage recruitment in sex trafficking. At the same time, Black people drifted away from traditional abusive substances like crack cocaine to methamphetamine and other narcotics associated with other ethnicities for reasons that are unclear. A Pandemic, a Response, and the Aftermath The advent of the COVID-19 virus sent the world into an economic recession, resulting in a stock market crash from February to April of 2020. This in turn caused rapid increases in unemployment in many countries, including the United States where in excess of 10 million unemployment cases were reported. To counter this, by the end of March, President Donald Trump signed a stimulus package in excess of 1$ trillion in one-time cash payments to individual taxpayers. He in turn increased unemployment benefits, loans to small businesses, and billions in loans to corporations and state and local governments. This largess opened the floodgates to a multitude of claims, both legitimate and fraudulent. To be fair, these scams, swindles, and shakedowns were executed across a wide spectrum of demographics. For the traditional bottom feeders at street level, they provided an alternative means of fund-ing aside from the usual sources of slinging narcotics and strong armed robbery, with much less severe legal consequences. This area of malfeasance has found its way into the ghetto as well, albeit on a drastically smaller level. Early on, “the homies” copied contemporaries in the general population and figured out strategies to milk the gov-ernment out of these deep pocket bailouts. Dirty White Collar Transnationalism Los Angeles gangs have exported their lifestyle, which is societally viewed as un-lawful, throughout the rest of the country. Federal authorities have estimated perhaps 15,000 members of the “United Blood Nation” (UBN) alone live on the east coast. Aside from traditional crimes like homicide, robbery, traffickin Edward Henderson (San Diego Voice and Viewpoint/NNPA Member) – Our Weekly News You Can Relate To Our Weekly provides insights on local and national news, culture, and lifestyle, from people who know your community best.
