Facebook Twitter WhatsApp SMS Email Print Copy article link Save Advertorial Top Five Questions to Ask an Online School May 16, 2026 May 16, 2026 Updated 11 hrs ago Facebook Twitter WhatsApp SMS Email When you’re considering an online school for your student, asking these five questions can prove educational. Facebook Twitter WhatsApp SMS Email Print Copy article link Save Facebook Twitter WhatsApp SMS Email Print Copy article link Save (NAPSI)—As education continues to evolve, more families are exploring new models—such as asynchronous learning, interactive content and AI-powered tools. With so many options emerging, it’s important to consider which approach will best support your child’s needs. For families thinking about a transition to online school, asking the right questions is essential to navigating and evaluating the growing range of choices. Questions to Help Guide Your Search • Is the school accredited? In the United States, accreditation and a school’s reputation with colleges can be threshold indicators of the quality of education your student can expect. For example, accreditation through a national organization such as Cognia ensures that the school has undergone a rigorous accreditation process requiring self-study, research, focus on educational excellence, and strategic future planning. Similarly, long-standing regional accrediting organizations such as Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) engage private schools in California, Hawaii, the Pacific, and several institutions outside of the U.S. in a rigorous accreditation process to ensure they provide high-quality education. • What type of online program does the school offer? Online programs can be asynchronous, synchronous, or hybrid. Synchronous and hybrid programs require students to be present at specific times or places, which can support collaboration but limit flexibility. For students looking for a completely flexible experience, an online, asynchronous program may be the best option. Students in asynchronous programs are typically not required to attend live classes at specific times or places, which lets them design their own daily, weekly, and annual schedules and complete their schoolwork at any time as long as they have access to a computer and the internet. • What types of socialization and community-building opportunities are available to students? It’s essential for online students and families to intentionally seek out and lean in to social opportunities, both inside and outside their school. Meaningful friendships can positively affect academic performance, leading to improved comprehension and higher GPAs. Parents should ask online schools for clear examples of how their students interact with their peers. At an online school such as Laurel Springs School, for example, students have access to a wide range of social opportunities, from 90+ virtual clubs and activities, to in-person field trips, graduation, and prom. Learning more about an online school’s community-building opportunities will help paint the full picture of what your student can expect as an online student. • What academic outcomes or achievements can you share? Academic statistics including graduation rates, college acceptance rates, and test scores are excellent indicators of the quality of an academic program. Most accredited, full-time school programs will share this information through their website or can provide documentation, such as School Profiles, to share recent outcomes with families. • What does a typical day look like for an online student? Schools that offer synchronous or hybrid programs may be able to share sample schedules with prospective families. In asynchronous programs, however, a “typical” day can look different for each student, depending on age, grade level, learning style, and family or personal commitments. If the school offers virtual tours, open houses, or webinars, these can be good opportunities to ask current students or teachers for examples of their “typical days” or to ask what support the school offers students in shaping their daily schedules. Ultimately, an asynchronous program can empower students to shape their learning experience to fit their academic and other needs, but it will require more input and oversight from parents at home to ensure success. Learn More Searching for an online K-12 program can be a daunting task, but there are resources to help you as you decide among available institutions. Programs such as Laurel Springs School offer community-building opportunities with excellent academic outcomes. To learn more, visit laurelsprings.com , and if you register for the next Virtual Open House, Laurel Springs will waive your $300 registration fee if you enroll within two weeks. Facebook Twitter WhatsApp SMS Email Print Copy article link Save Facebook Twitter WhatsApp SMS Email Print Copy article link Save The Providence Pioneers and Viewpoint Patriots of Calabasas went toe-to-toe in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 5 softball playoffs Thursday, May 14, at George Izay Park in Burbank. Providence, known this year as the team without a league, grabbed a CIF-SS at-large playoff bid due to its strong win-loss record and were hoping to make a long run in the postseason tournament. Unfortunately, the Pioneersbecame their own worst enemy in a game they could have possibly won if not for several fielding errors that led to six unearned runs for the opportunistic Patriots, who grabbed the 9-4 victory. The first-round playoff loss was not the way Providence (18-5 overall) envisioned its successful 2026 campaign coming to an end. “I’m really proud of the girls,” Providence coach Manny Travieso said. “Not having a league was a big deal. We had to play a lot of games. It was a grind.” The Pioneers were led by freshman Kayla Salazar, who slugged two home runs, had three RBIs, scored twice and pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief. Gigi Aleman tripled and drove in a run while Brooklyn Freed doubled and scored a run. “Our team worked really hard,” said Travieso. “They made the adjustments they needed to and that’s all I can ask.” Pioneers sophomore Madelynn Watts started inside the circle for Providence and ran into some bad luck. The Patriots (20-5) would score in the top of the first inning when with one out, a dunker to short center found some grass for a base hit. Then, a throwing error on a stolen base attempt put a runner at third. A sacrifice fly to shallow right brought home the game’s first run for the early 1-0 Viewpoint lead. Providence responded in the bottom half of the first when, with one out, Freed legged out a hustle double to left. Salazar followed with a sinking line drive shot down the right field line that the right fielder could not reach. The ball then rolled to the outfield fence allowing Freed to score and Salazar to circle the bases giving the Pioneers the 2-1 lead after one inning of play. Viewpoint would tie the game in the top of the third inning. Once again, an error resulted in a Patriots run. A leadoff single to left got under the glove of the outfielder sending the runner to third. The next hitter laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt and the game was knotted at 2-2. Viewpoint then loaded the bases with two outs and that’s when Travieso decided to pull Watts and bring in Salazar, who got the third out avoiding any further damage in the inning. The Patriots scored again in the fourth. After a leadoff double, the sacrifice bunt that followed was misplayed for an error plating a run. Then, a two-out bad hop single brought home the second run of the inning and Viewpoint had the 4-2 lead. Salazar led off the bottom of the fourth for Providence with a no-doubt, loud blast to deep left fi Letter to the Editor: This Professor Is Perfect for City Council | La Cañada Outlook | outlooknewspapers.com Skip to main content You have permission to edit this article. To me, he’s exactly that and Professor Ahmed, the educator who left a lasting impression on how I approach my community. Nearly two years ago, during my senior year at Cal Poly, I had the privilege of taking two of Professor Ahmed’s political science courses. From the very first class, it was clear this was someone who didn’t just teach the material. His passion for civic engagement and legal education was manifest through his teaching. He often spoke about his work representing smaller municipalities against larger government entities, drawing from his own legal career and connecting it to the coursework in a way that brought the class to life. He spoke about these experiences openly, and you could hear in his voice how much he cares about his community. Growing in the same area as Quemars, that resonated deeply. His legal background means he brings something unique to this race: a deep, firsthand understanding of the issues directly facing the city. He, of course, brings a perspective as a resident, but he also brings a legal and structural perspective that proves beneficial for the community at large. He understands how local government actually works, where it can fall short, and how to advocate effectively within it. He challenges his students to think critically, engage with our communities, and take our civic responsibilities seriously. That is exactly the kind of perspective City Council needs. Quemars is wholeheartedly committed to public service and serving La Cañada in the ways that it needs. Someone who has dedicated himself to educating and empowering the next generation will bring that same dedication to serving the city. I urge the La Cañada community to get out and vote for Quemars on June 2!! For many outside the entertainment industry, this may sound like a Hollywood issue. But for Burbank, it is a local economic story that deserves urgent attention. I am a television editor working in non-scripted programming, and for the first time in my career, I am watching colleagues with decades of experience struggle to find work. Many of the shows we helped build are now sending editing, visual effects, and sound work out of state — or overseas — to regions offering more competitive incentives. CAPA was recently formed to advocate for California’s post-production workforce and to support AB 2319, which would help attract film and television projects to complete their post-production here, even when principal photography takes place elsewhere. Other states and countries — including New York, Canada, and the U.K. — already offer standalone post-production incentives. California, despite being the historic home of this industry, is falling behind. At the town hall, many Burbank residents shared painful stories of layoffs, lost opportunities, and growing financial hardship. These weren’t just industry complaints — they were stories about families wondering how they will stay in their homes and continue building lives in the city they love. Burbank is an entertainment town. When post-production jobs disappear, the impact extends far beyond editors and sound mixers. Restaurants, coffee shops, equipment vendors, dry cleaners, and countless small businesses all depend on the people who work in this industry. If these jobs continue to leave, the ripple effects will be felt throughout our entire community. This is more than an industry trend — it is a Burbank story. I hope the Burbank Leader will consider reporting on the growing effort to save California post-production and the local residents fighting to protect their livelihoods. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 10,484 people killed in crashes across the U.S. in 2023 were not wearing a seat belt. In California, 780 unrestrained people were killed in crashes that year, including 24 children. Unrestrained child fatalities in the state increased 4.3% from 2022 to 2023. Under California law, children under 2 must ride in a rear-facing car seat unless they weigh 40 or more pounds or are 40 or more inches tall. All children under 8 must be secured in a car seat or booster seat regardless of size, and may not ride in the front seat unless the vehicle has no rear forward-facing seat. Children 8 and older, or at least 4 feet 9 inches tall, must be secured by a properly fitted safety belt at minimum. Officials encourage parents to keep children in rear or forward-facing seats as long as possible and use the "Five-Step Test" to determine when a child is ready to use a seat belt without a booster seat. The campaign is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Despite the holiday rush, work deadlines, and all the extra activities that go along with parenting a young child through the holidays, I carved out time to attend my very first South Pasadena City Council meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 17. What I witnessed at this meeting was both endearing (the celebration of beloved local legend Joanne Nuckols) and profoundly disappointing (the City Council’s collective response to the members of our community who are trying to protect our trees). I do not personally know any of the people who spoke up on behalf of the trees, nor do I personally know any of the council members, but what I heard in the tree defenders' arguments was a common-sense rationale that was both well-informed and moving. In a nutshell, I heard, "We are neither blind nor ignorant to the real and specific problems that need to be solved respecting insurance, fire safety, and housing issues, but we need qualified experts in Urban Forestry to guide us in the careful management of our cherished and valuable tree canopy because every mature tree loss takes decades to replace." What I heard back from the City Council, in a nutshell, was, “We’re out of time and patience for your concerns and are moving on.” Mayor Sheila Rossi summarized the debate in a way that pitted the welfare of our trees against wildfire safety, the insurance market, and state housing laws, as if we are all trapped in a zero sum game where the trees must “lose” in order for other, more politically and financially pressing issues to “win.” What a failure of creative problem-solving and of leadership. To the tree defenders who spoke at this meeting (including and especially the two children) I just want to say thank you. I appreciate your efforts to protect the oxygen-giving, heat-absorbing, life-supporting guardians of our community. Giannamore / Nico Armendariz throws a pitch during a nonleague baseball game between San Marino and La Salle at Arcadia County Park in Arcadia on Friday, April 10. Facebook Twitter WhatsApp SMS Email Print Copy article link Save Facebook Twitter WhatsApp SMS Email Print Copy article link Save An extra-innings, go-ahead RBI double ended the La Salle baseball team’s season, knocking them out of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs in eight innings with a 1-0 loss of the first round against Claremont at Arcadia County Park on Thursday, May 14. Claremont starting pitcher Brady Houlton tossed a gem, carrying a perfect game into the seventh inning when he surrendered his only hit to Lancers senior Andrew Klein. Houlton also recorded the winning RBI, carrying the Wolfpack to a one-run victory. La Salle pitcher Nico Armendariz went toe-to-toe against Houlton, tossing 7 ⅓ innings, striking out 11, walking three, allowing four hits and one run to score. The run support was simply not there for Armendariz, who surrendered the game-winning run in the eighth inning. Claremont opened up the eighth with a single that eventually reached second base on a passed ball. Armendariz then got his first out of the frame with a punchout. With a runner in scoring position, La Salle coach Andy Nieto elected to walk the following batter to try and set up a double play. This brought Houlton up to bat, and on the first pitch he saw, Houlton smacked a hard ground ball down the third-base line for the go-ahead RBI double. That would be the final pitch Armendariz threw, as he was replaced by David Eriksson who stranded the runners with back-to-back strikeouts. “I put all my effort on the line,” said Armendariz. “You have to do anything to win and I gave my offense a chance. I feel like I did my part but we came up short. I love this team. I'm going to miss my brothers. This was a very talented team.” Armendariz is one of 10 seniors that have now played their final ball game for the Lancers which will definitely have an impact on the future of the baseball program. “A lot of these guys have been together for three or four years,” said Nieto. “The culture we are trying to create is a brotherhood and they have. The people before them created that [brotherhood] and they are definitely going to pass the torch to someone else.” The La Salle offense was a shadow of itself against Claremont, breaking up a perfect game in the seventh inning, following a regular season where the Lancers scored 189 total runs. The Lancers ended things with a 18-10 overall record and 8-4 Del Rey league record where they finished runner up. “Our body of work was good. We did a lot of good things,” said Nieto. “At the end we needed to be playing our best and we were playing not like we were during the middle of the year when we had all cylinders clicking. Good pitching is going to make it difficult for hitting and that's what happened today. [Houlton] was pretty special.” Facebook Twitter WhatsApp SMS Email Print Copy article link Save Latest e-Edition Pasadena Outlook To view our latest e-Edition click the image on the left. That’s not out of the ordinary. The kicker is that these golfers are members of a group called the Terrible Twenties, which has been doing this every month for 100 years — notwithstanding the vicissitudes of wars, depressions, a global pandemic and extreme weather events. In 1926, the United States had passed through the carnage of World War I and the terrible influenza epidemic of 1918-19 to embark upon a decade of prosperity, optimism and ebullience that would later be called the “Roaring ’20s.” California was still a state whose economy was centered on agriculture. Los Angeles County had a population of less than 1 million people, and they lived in towns and cities separated by fields and groves. But growth was on the way and, with it, prosperity, leisure and an interest in sport that was fed by the new prominence of sports heroes: home run king Babe Ruth, boxer Jack Dempsey, football legend Red Grange, tennis champion Bill Tilden, and a golfer and gentleman lawyer named Robert Tyre Jones Jr. — the legendary Bobby Jones. Across Southern California, a number of golf courses and golf clubs were established in the early decades of the 20th century. One such club was the Flintridge Country Club, which was developed on hilly property west of Pasadena. On a “glorious bright morning” in May of 1926, a middle-aged man named Eric Lange hosted 19 of his friends to a round of golf at Flintridge Country Club. Lange had a general contracting business in downtown Los Angeles. By his own account, he was an enthusiastic — but not particularly proficient — golfer. The level of golf play of the 20 players was not as bright as the weather on that May morning. The Flintridge course snaked over a hilly layout, and there were a number of places in which adjoining fairways brought golfers, proceeding in opposite directions, within hailing distance of one another. As a number of them remembered it later, when they passed another foursome on the next fairway, they called out to one another, “How’s it going?” The response to these questions was almost invariably the same: “Terrible!” The Terrible Twenties golfers who are celebrating the organization’s centennial include Vic Person (seated, from left), Phil Freeman, Tom Saliba, Clay Thompson, Jack Meyers, Alex Alvarez, Ray Kelly, John Rush, David Quigg, Sakae Chang, John Clark, Gary Osheroff, John DiCarlo and Harvey Green. Not pictured: Bob Barnhart, Phil Bartenetti, Dennis Burke, Bill Callahan, Jim Johnson, John Reynolds, JB Roberts and Larry Sears. | Photo courtesy Colin Pregent After the golf round was complete, the 20 golfers gathered for lunch. It seems likely that, notwithstanding nationwide Prohibition, cocktails were consumed. The players’ spirits, bruised though they were by their morning golf play, soared. An atmosphere of jolly bonhomie suffused the room. As Lange recalled later, “At the luncheon table someone arose and after a few enthusiastic remarks made a motion that we become a permanent organization and play regular monthly tournaments.” This proposal met with a tide of approval, and the motion was unanimously adopted. The organization was born. The members went home happy to be members in this as-yet unnamed fraternity. So what would the group be called? Arthur Houston, one of the original 20 players, placed an article in the June 18, 1926, edition of the Los Angeles Times, describing the Flintridge Country Club event that had taken place three days earlier. The caption of the article referred to a “Terrible Twenty Tournament.” Lange later explained that, after reading the article, he called Houston and asked about the origin of the term “Terrible Twenty.” Houston replied that he had thought back to the yelled exchanges between their foursomes on the parallel fairways of the Flintridge course: “How’s it going?” “Terrible!” Houston continued, “And then you know there were just 20 of us.” Houston gave the name to the Times, and the Times printed it. The name “Terrible Twenty” stuck. And the group played on, month by month. At each gathering, the the format was the same: a round of golf, followed by cocktails and a meal for all of the at NAMI Glendale Offers LGBTQ+ Support | Glendale News Press | outlooknewspapers.com Skip to main content You have permission to edit this article. Anxiety. Suicide. For LGBTQ+ adults in Los Angeles County, these are not abstractions, they are daily realities, according to a press release from NAMI Glendale. Due to discrimination in their families, neighborhoods and in the workplace, many LGBTQ+ people contend with whether they are meant to be here, and where that “here” may be. Isolation is common for people who have lost trust in how they will be received, with threats, harassment or acceptance. A landmark 2024 study by the UCLA Williams Institute lays bare the scale of the crisis: LGBTQ adults in Los Angeles experience depression at twice the rate of their non-LGBTQ neighbors, anxiety at nearly three times the rate, and lifetime suicide attempts at more than four times the rate. Transgender and nonbinary adults carry an even heavier load — nearly one in four has attempted suicide. These are not statistics born of chance. They are the measurable consequence of discrimination, family rejection, harassment and a healthcare system that has historically looked the other way. And when LGBTQ individuals do seek help, the system fails them again. Three out of four who went without mental health care cited cost. Nearly one in three could not find a single provider willing to affirm who they are. Into that gap steps NAMI Glendale, a grassroots mental health organization, providing free, confidential mental health programs led by people with lived experience. Their peer connections support group offers solidarity for those living with mental illness. Their family support group extends that circle to loved ones who want to learn to better support someone they love. Both meet virtually, twice a month, led not by distant clinicians but by LGBTQ peers who have lived what their participants are experiencing. NAMI Glendale said it is now offering special workshops and get-togethers for LGBTQ+ people affected by SMI to do something creative, in an accepting, stigma-free environment. At a recent April 18 workshop held at Edendale Public Library in Echo Park, one attendee reflected: "I was so happy to have come to this workshop. I felt my stress disappear by the end... Can't wait to join the next workshop they lead." NAMI Glendale outreach coordinator, Lee MacNaughton, said he hopes that these workshops will provide an opportunity to be in a creative, open-hearted space with other LGBTQ+ people, because everyone deserves a place to heal. He has been attending and facilitating the LGBTQ+ Peer Connections support group for over a year. Hearing the needs of group participants has inspired him to create more spaces to engage in creative outlets and build long-lasting relationships within the community. “The more I involve myself in positive and supportive spaces for LGBTQ+ people, the more connected I feel to my community as a support system. We are all learning how to get through this life together while still being able to share laughs and be our most authentic selves," said MacNaughton in the statement. As May's Mental Health Awareness Month gives way to June's Pride Month, NAMI Glendale invites the community to share time together in socially welcoming LGBTQ+ spaces. On May 18, they will host a free virtual workshop on zine-making on Zoom. NAMI support group facilitator and artist, Milly, will lead the workshop. They said, “As someone with lived experience, I know how hard it can be to find spaces where you're truly seen and how healing it is when you can show up as your most authentic space. My hope is that participants leave our LGBTQ spaces with the reminder that their story matters and that they don't have to carry it alone.” Register and explore NAMI Glendale's full calendar of programs at namiglendale.org . "No experience is required. No fee. No judgment," the group said.
