A dental whitening gel is used for this purpose and can be done at home as well. But, to obtain the best results, it is advisable to get the teeth whitening done by a dentist. How is teeth whitening advantageous? The stains are removed from the surface of the teeth, making them look whiter and aesthetically pleasing. Teeth whitening offers long-lasting results, provided proper oral hygiene and eating habits are practiced. The procedure doesn't alter the structure of the teeth and just removes the stains from their surface. It removes the accumulated bacteria from the surface of teeth, thereby improving oral health and preventing oral diseases. The procedure is quick and simple. It has been clinically proved to be effective and safe. Improves a person's smile and also the self-confidence. What are the common causes of teeth staining? Improper brushing techniques. Excessive consumption of beverages such as tea, coffee, red wine, colored foods, etc. Chewing tobacco and smoking. Sometimes, teeth which have undergone a root canal surgery may become discolored. How is teeth whitening carried out? The teeth whitening procedure can be completed in a single visit to the dentist's office. First, a screening process will be carried out before teeth whitening is done. A tooth with cavities can't be whitened as is, because the whitening gel may enter the cavity and infect the pulp of the tooth. Hence, the cavities have to be treated prior to the whitening process. The same applies to teeth which have been cracked or fractured as well. Sometimes, when there is a recession of gums below the gum line, teeth whitening may have different effects on the crown compared to the roots. Hence, this must also be taken care of. The teeth are initially cleaned to remove the bacteria, debris and any food particles that are stuck between them. They are now ready for the whitening procedure. The dentist applies some whitening gel/cream on your teeth and spreads it evenly. It is made to stay on them for some time so that the stains are lifted from their surface, after which it will be removed by rinsing. The process may have to be repeated multiple times based on the severity of discoloring and the level of whitening desired. What is teeth whitening using custom trays? Customized plastic trays are also used for teeth whitening. The process takes two or more visits to the dentist's office. During the first visit, a screening process is carried out and a precise mold of the teeth is taken. This serves as a reference to manufacturing the custom trays. During the next visit, the trays will be checked for fit and any adjustments, if needed, will be made. A special whitening solution has to be used with the tray, which will help remove the stains. The trays will have to be worn twice a day for 30 minutes, or they can be worn overnight as well. What is laser teeth whitening? This process is similar to conventional teeth whitening using whitening gel. But, here, the whitening gel will be photosensitive and can be activated with the help of a laser. It is more efficient and quicker compared to normal whitening, which is why most people prefer it to get whiter teeth. It involves treating the dental needs of children right from infancy to adolescence. It is a specialty that's recognized by the ADA and the dentists undergo special training for this purpose. What do pediatric dentists do? Pediatric dentists monitor the growth of your child's teeth from infancy to adolescence. They check your child's oral set up for any signs of cavities. They suggest suitable treatment and oral hygiene plans for your child. They educate the parents on how to take care of their child's oral set up. They check for early signs of malocclusion and take preventative measures. They offer solutions to habits such as thumb sucking. In case of emergency, such as an injury to your child's teeth, they offer first aid and tend to the injury. They offer treatments which help strengthen the teeth. Ex: Fluoride treatment. They involve in the extraction of the milk teeth which refuse to fall off naturally. They treat decayed teeth and fill cavities. In case of malocclusion or improper bite, they offer orthodontic solutions. They conduct overall oral examinations to determine the health of the teeth and gums. Why is pediatric dentistry important? Monitoring your child's teeth for any signs of cavities and malocclusion issues is absolutely necessary. Hence, it is advisable that your child is taken to a pediatric dentist at least once in six months, starting at an age of twelve months. Milk teeth usually erupt when the child is six months old. The pediatric dentist would offer suggestions about the brushing techniques, maintaining proper oral health, foods that should be avoided, etc. In children, small unnoticed cavities can rapidly turn into severe ones. They could lead to childhood periodontal as well. Hence, a pediatric dentist may take an X-ray when he/she suspects that your child has underlying hidden cavities. Another advantage of visiting the pediatric dentist regularly is that your child's oral health record can be maintained meticulously. Hence, any sudden changes in the oral health of your child can be treated effectively. Malocclusion issues which are treated during childhood have a higher success rate and would help in the proper growth and alignment of teeth. How can you take care of your child's oral health at home? Brushing: Brushing gets rid of most of the cavity-causing bacteria from the mouth. Also, any food particles and debris that are stuck on the teeth can also be removed, thereby reducing the chances of cavity development. Flossing: Flossing removes the bacteria and food debris that are stuck between the teeth. This is highly important as cavities mostly develop at the interface between two teeth. Thumb sucking: Thumb sucking can lead to malocclusion. It can affect the way teeth grow and also gradually change their alignment. Hence, parents should make sure that their kids do not suck their thumbs. An orthodontically correct pacifier will be suggested to you by your child's pediatric dentist which would prevent thumb sucking. Diet: Diet plays a major role in the oral health of your child. Sugary foods, chocolates, candies, etc. should be limited to avoid the onset of cavities. Dr. Christopher Joy understands the challenge one has to suffer due to lost teeth and hence, he has dedicated his practice in providing ample services to restore the lost set of teeth using the latest advance in the field of Dentistry. Dental implants help to replace the missing teeth. There are several factors that are likely to lead us to the dilemma of tooth loss, and a research has led us to understand that the factors are due to ignorance of proper oral health care. Before After Before After What are the likely causes of tooth loss? Let’s understand the primary reasons for tooth loss: Dental cavities . Cavities tend to grow on the surface of the enamel due to the accumulation of bacteria, plaque, and tartar. As cavities grow over time, it can weaken the roots of the teeth leading to breakage, and in extreme cases, it can lead to loss of the tooth. Periodontal disease . Tooth loss can also occur when the patient starts to suffer from the extreme cases of the Periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a severe gum disease of the mouth. As bacteria accumulate in the sides of the gums, it, in turn, degrades its health. Infected gums can ultimately fall off weakening the roots of the teeth. Root Canal Infection . It starts by infecting the inner pulp of the teeth. As the infection grows it damages the teeth from the inside leading to complete destruction of the teeth. This leads to tooth fall. What can Dental Implants provide? A dental implant will offer patients with an alternative solution to tooth loss by replacing the root with the help of an implant, by replacing the teeth with the help of a restoration such as crowns, and by providing an adhesive to hold them both in place with the help of an abutment. Dental implants offer an easy-to-insert option to restore missing teeth. Our practice is capable of offering patients with same day tooth replacements as well. What are the advantages of Dental Implants? The primary goal of providing implants is to provide an artificial yet natural looking fixture in replacement of a lost tooth. There are several advantages of dental implants, and here are a few: Implants provide durability. They help in covering unnecessary spaces and gaps. They will play a critical role in boosting one’s self-confidence. Implants will improve and enhance the aesthetics of the teeth. They will go a long way in improving the appearance of the smile. What is the procedure for getting an implant? Here is an outline of the procedure to get a dental implant: Any procedure would begin by providing the patient with a mild sedation to offer precision in the results. Your dentist will first remove any signs of tartar on the gums to provide space to insert the implant. After inserting the implant, the patient can be given an option to either wait to insert the restoration or have it inserted above the implant on the same day. The restoration provided will be a temporary restoration. Once the implant has been fully secured to the bones of the mouth after the healing period, the temporary restoration will be removed and the abutment will be placed above it. The abutment will serve as a durable connector to the implant and the permanent restoration. After placing the abutment, the dentist will place the permanent restoration above it. Patients must develop and adhere to several oral hygiene practices to make the best of their dental health. Tooth Brushing Techniques Regular maintenance Tooth Cleaning Fluoride Clin Pro Digital X-Rays A vital part of preventive dentistry is to ensure that the patient develops the right technique of brushing their teeth. Brushing the teeth twice a day is crucial to maintaining oral hygiene. Dentists recommend choosing the best toothbrush and toothpaste to ensure that the teeth remain clean and free of bacteria. It is advised to choose a toothbrush with soft bristles that will easily find their way into the narrow corners of the teeth in order to remove dirt if any. A toothpaste composed of fluoride is the best choice of toothpaste from a dentist’s point of view. Flossing Technique Flossing is an essential routine that comes as a part of maintaining dental hygiene. Flossing is a mandatory dental hygiene routine as it helps to remove and fight infections of the gums and teeth. An inflammatory condition of the gums known as Gingivitis has proved to stabilize among patients suffering from it just because they adopted flossing as a part of their dental hygiene routine. How to care for an implant? Dental implants are a life savior to patients who want to restore their broken teeth. Just as exciting as it is to get a dental implant, it takes great effort and patience to maintain them by adopting aftercare dental hygiene practices. Implants are easy to insert, but it is vital that we incorporate certain tips to ensure that the results of having an implant on, lasts long. After getting an implant it will be helpful if the patient avoided certain habits such as smoking, drinking beverages with a high content of sugar and caffeine and including good habits such as brushing the teeth twice a day, flossing at least once a week, eating a healthy and nutritious diet. It will be useful to the newly inserted restoration if the patient maintained a soft diet until the gums around the implant get fully healed. This will also help to brush and floss easily allowing to maintain good oral hygiene. How to care for a dental bridge? Dental bridges are used to replace a set of missing teeth. It plays a great role in retaining and improving the aesthetics of the teeth. Taking care of bridges are essential. After getting a dental bridge, the patient may experience slight signs of swelling. In order to calm the degree of swelling, it is advised to regularly rinse the mouth with salt water. Rinsing with salt water will decrease the pain and inflamed tissues of the gums. Patients can normally brush and floss the teeth. However, it is advised to be careful while flossing as it may hurt the swollen gums. How to care for an implant supported bridge? An implant-supported bridge is inserted into the gums by using Titanium posts as the implant. It provides the patient with extreme durability and confidence from tooth breakage. As patients get an implant, it will take a few months for the gums to heal. During and after getting an implant-supported implant, it is crucial to take utmost care as any accumulation of bacteria on the delicate portions of the gums that are yet to heal would complicate the procedure. Patients are advised to regularly floss their teeth. It is essential to ensure that the temporary and permanent bridges remain clean. Patients can brush their teeth normally. However, it is advised to apply lesser pressure to the teeth during the first few weeks of brushing. What are the various preventive dentistry options? Cleanings: Oral cleaning is the best way to prevent oral infections and diseases. The accumulated microbes can turn into plaque and tartar if left untreated for a long time. They are the prime cause of most of the oral conditions such as gingivitis, periodontitis, cavities, etc. Hence, keeping the mouth clean by regular brushing and flossing is very important. When it comes to professional cleaning, dentists perform procedures such as scaling and root planing. They get rid of the accumulated plaque and tartar from the surface of the tooth and the roots. They also smoothen the surface of the tooth and root, which eliminates uneven surfaces where bacteria can get deposited. Fluoride treatment: Fluoride treatment helps in strengthening your teeth. Fluoride is an essential mineral that's present in your teeth. It's made available to us through the water that we drink and the toothpaste. But, when the adequate amount of fluoride isn't being supplied to the body, a fluoride treatment would be necessary. This strengthens the teeth and prevents the formation of cavities. X-rays: Dental X-rays are a great way to determine underlying cavities. While most of the times, cavities are very apparent, sometimes they stay hidden and can't be spotted visually. In such cases, dental X-rays prove to be useful. Gum pocket examination: This is a very important procedure and helps prevent the onset of gum diseases. The gum pockets can sometimes be filled with debris and rotting food particles. Hence, examining the gum pockets would determine any debris that's deposited in there and they can be extracted to prevent any infections. Dental sealants: Sealants are used to fill the grooves which are found on top of molars and premolars. This prevents the accumulation of food particles and debris in the grooves and therefore, prevents cavities. Oral cancer screening: Oral cancer is one of the most dangerous dental conditions. It is mostly caused due to chewing tobacco and smoking. During the screening, the dentist would check for signs of redness, bleeding, gum recession, sore gums, abnormal lymph nodes, cysts, lumps, etc. If any such signs are found, then advanced screening processes are required to confirm the presence of oral cancer, after which it can be treated. Bite evaluation: Evaluation of a person's bite would help determine any malocclusion issues. If found during the early stages, treating them effectively with the help of corrective devices becomes easier. Salivary diagnosis: This method of screening for oral diseases has proved to be very effective. The dentist tests a small sample of your saliva to determine any oral infection. Missing teeth can be replaced with replacement structures such as implants and bridges. Most importantly, it improves a person's self-confidence and helps in sporting a beautiful smile. What are the common cosmetic dental procedures? Dental Implants: Dental implants are replacement tooth-like structures which are fixed to the jawbone. They are the most sought-after replacement for natural teeth owing to their high strength and durability. Veneers: Dental veneers are thin, flat dental appliances which are bonded on to the frontal surface of teeth. They are usually made up of porcelain and are used to restore chipped, cracked and discolored teeth. Teeth whitening: It is the process of removing the stains from the surface of the teeth with the help of whitening gel. It is a simple process and takes very less time. Laser teeth whitening: It is teeth whitening with the additional usage of lasers to activate the whitening gel. It is considered to be more efficient and quicker than conventional whitening techniques. Crowns: Crowns or dental caps are dental appliances which are used to cover an entire tooth. They are used to treat chipped or cracked teeth, discolored teeth, etc. They are also used to hold a dental bridge in place. Bridges: Dental bridges are replacement tooth-like structures just like dental implants, but aren't fixed to the jawbone. They are held in position with the help of crowns and adhesives. They restore the functionality of the mouth. Dental fillings: Dental fillings are used to fill cavities and also restore cracked teeth. Earlier, metal fillings were being extensively used for this purpose. But, since they ruined the aesthetics of the teeth, white fillings are being used extensively. They are usually made up of composites. Bonding: Bonding solves many dental issues such as the excessive gap between adjacent teeth, chipped and cracked teeth, discolored teeth, cavities, etc. It involves the application of a tooth-colored composite material on to the tooth surface and bonding it using a bonding agent. Inlays and Onlays: Inlays and onlays are used as a custom filling to fill cavities. They are custom fabricated according to the shape and size of the cavity and can be used instead of dental crowns. Braces and Invisalign: Braces and Invisalign are used to correct misaligned teeth. Malocclusion issues such as crowding, spacing, open bite, crossbite, overbite, underbite, etc. can be corrected using them. Gum reconstruction: Gum surgeries such as gingivoplasty, gingivectomy, etc. are used to reconstruct the gums which have been affected by diseases such as gingivitis and periodontal. Cosmetic dental procedures help you regain your lost smile. They help to boost one's self-confidence boosters and also improve oral health. The tooth pulp is a complex mass which is composed of nerves and blood vessels. A dentist who's a specialist in treating the tooth pulp is called an endodontist. What are the common symptoms of endodontic problems? Severe pain the tooth and the gums. There will be a sharp pain while eating and brushing teeth. The gums may bleed. There could a release of pus from the gums. Bad breath. The gums may look inflamed. There could be a loss of jawbone, which can be found out only through X-rays. Hypersensitivity of the tooth to hot and cold foods. However, in certain cases, no such symptom may be visible though the tooth has been infected. In such cases, careful examination by the dentist is necessary to determine the severity of the infection. How does the pulp in the root canal get infected? In most cases, a root canal infection is developed due to cavities. The accumulated plaque and tartar on the surface of the teeth damage the enamel due to the acids that they liberate. The microbes make their way to the inner part of a tooth and infect the pulp, thereby causing a root canal infection. Sometimes, when a tooth has been damaged due to injury, the pulp of the tooth may be exposed to the microbes in the mouth. There is a chance of the pulp being infected by the bacteria. When an entire tooth has been knocked off from its socket in the jawbone, bacteria may infect the gums and the infection would progress on to the root of the tooth. There are chances of the tooth developing a root canal infection due to gum diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis. What is root canal therapy and how is it performed? A root canal therapy is a dental procedure where the infected nerves and blood vessels are removed from the root canal of a tooth. This therapy is a last resort option when no other treatment procedures can be used to restore the tooth to its proper functioning state. The dentist carefully examines your tooth to determine the severity of the infection. Various screening tests are performed and x-rays are taken to check the underlying tissues and bone. The tooth will then be prepared for the root canal therapy. The tooth will be cleaned thoroughly and saliva will be kept away from it during the surgery with the help of a rubber dam. The dentist then makes a small hole in the top of the infected tooth and inserts a dental file into it, so as to remove the infected pulp material. Files of varying diameters are used to thoroughly remove all the pulp and scrub the walls of the root canal, clearing out all the residual bacteria from the cavity. A jet of water is used to clear out the debris. Why is it important to provide a restoration after a root canal therapy? The dentist covers the hole with filling material after a small amount of medication has been introduced into the root canal. This is done to prevent further development of infections. After the pulp has been removed from a tooth, it would be weaker than before and the chances of it cracking or fracturing is high. Hence, teeth which have undergone root canal therapy are restored with the help of a dental crown. The crown would hold the tooth intact and give it the necessary strength, preventing it from failing. Root canal therapy is found to have a high success rate. Though the tooth undergoing root canal therapy loses its sensation (because the nerves are removed), the procedure most often saves the tooth from being extracted. The Mandibular Advancement Device, also commonly known as MAD is a dental device used to combat sleep disorders among patients who suffer from mild to extreme cases of sleep apnea. The device works by ensuring to open the airway to the lungs while the person sleeps which otherwise doesn’t in the case of sleep apnea patients. Why do we recommend MAD? We understand the troublesome nature of patients who suffer from sleep apnea. While it is difficult to have a heavy equipment around the patient, a simple mold such as this would help to subside and reduce the effects of sleep apnea. Mandibular Advancement Device is an easy-to-use device that is compact and travel-friendly. It helps to curb sleep apnea. It can be easily inserted into the mouth. Helps to combat severe snoring issues. How does MAD work? The Mandibular Advancement Device works by pushing the jaw into the right place allowing smooth passage of oxygen into the lungs of the patient. As this happens, the patient will find it comfortable to breathe and inhale oxygen into the body. This will prevent snoring, which occurs otherwise due to disruption of the airway passage. What is the procedure for getting MAD? A sleep study will be conducted by your medical doctor to analyze the patient's sleep patterns. Once a patient is diagnosed with sleep apnea by a doctor, we will start treatment with MAD. A mold would be inserted into the mouth of the patient. This mold will cover the upper and lower jaws of the mouth. It will be customized to serve the patient’s need. The Mandibular Advancement Device will be constructed to ensure normal breathing patterns in patients. Follow-ups will be conducted to review any signs of improvement in the patient’s sleeping pattern. They are aesthetically very pleasing and removable as well. There are two types of dentures; namely complete dentures and partial dentures. What are the advantages of dentures? Dentures restore the functionality of the mouth. People with dentures can comfortably bite and chew food. They restore the natural shape of the cheeks and the lips. They look exactly like natural teeth. Hence, you wouldn't feel embarrassed for wearing dentures as they're almost indistinguishable from natural teeth. They help to improve your speech. They are removable. Cleaning your dentures is very easy. They can be removed, brushed like natural teeth and put back on. They are pretty comfortable and do not tend to get displaced in the mouth. What are complete dentures and partial dentures? Complete dentures are used when one has lost all of his/her teeth. Complete dentures can either be conventional or immediate. Conventional dentures: The dentist removes the natural teeth and the wounds are allowed to heal. After the wounds heal, a precise mold of the mouth is taken for fabricating the dentures. The dentures will be made and ready in a few weeks. Immediate dentures: Immediate dentures can be worn even before the wounds heal. A mold will be taken a few weeks before the teeth are removed and sent to the dental laboratory for fabrication. After the teeth have been extracted, the dentures can be worn and the wounds would be allowed to heal. The advantage with immediate dentures is that the patient wouldn't have to go without teeth even for a few days. Partial dentures are customized according to the patient's requirement. Getting multiple dental implants wouldn't be a good option when many teeth are lost, and hence, partial dentures would be the best option in such cases. How are dentures made? Dentures are usually made of acrylic. But, metals and composites are also used to make dentures. If any teeth have to be extracted prior to getting dentures, the dentist extracts them. A highly precise mold of the teeth will be taken and sent to a dental laboratory, where the dentures will be made. The dentist would place them in your mouth and check for fit and comfort. Based on your feedback, any changes required will be made immediately. Care of dentures Dentures must be cared for just like you care for your natural teeth. They must regularly be removed and brushed to get rid of all the bacteria and food particles that are stuck in between the teeth. This would also prevent staining. Initially, the dentures may feel uncomfortable. But, with regular use, you eventually get used to them. Some of them are teeth whitening, applying fillings, bonding, installing crowns, bridges, veneers, dental implants, inlays, onlays, usage of dental aligners such as braces and Invisalign, etc. Cosmetic dentistry can briefly be divided into four types. They are: Changing the alignment of teeth or straightening them. Example: Invisalign. Adding dental appliances or materials to the teeth. Example: Crowns, veneers, bonding. Removal of structures from the mouth. Example: Gum surgery. Neither removing nor adding any dental structures and just changing the appearance. Ex: Whitening. --> Been a focus in our office from the beginning Ranges in Complexity May involve coordination with our Specialist Colleagues (Orthodontist, Periodontist) for optimal outcome Why should you go for cosmetic dentistry? Misalignment issues can be solved with the help of cosmetic dentistry. Discolored teeth can be made to look whiter. Chipped, cracked or fractured teeth can be brought back to their original shape. They are usually made of porcelain and are bonded on to the surface of teeth with the help of adhesives. Most Esthetic Minimally Invasive Strengthens Teeth Excellent Gum Tissue Response What are the various dental issues that veneers help resolve? Veneers can be used to reshape teeth which are chipped or which are naturally out of shape (misshapen teeth). The excessive gap between teeth (spacing) can be eliminated with the help of veneers. Teeth which are severely discolored can be made to look whiter. Teeth which are misaligned or crooked can be treated with veneers. They can treat cracked, fractured or worn out teeth. How are veneers advantageous? They do not alter the natural structure of a tooth. They are long-lasting. They are resistant to chipping and staining. They do not add on to the thickness of a tooth. They can be used to treat a wide variety of dental issues. They are aesthetically pleasing and indistinguishable from the natural tooth enamel. In most cases of veneers, anesthesia wouldn't be necessary. How are veneers installed? Veneers are custom fabricated to fit on a particular tooth of an individual. But, before this, a screening process has to be carried out and the tooth has to be prepared for placing the veneer. A thin layer of the enamel will be removed from the tooth by grinding or buffing to create space for installing the veneer. Next, a highly precise mold is taken, which serves as a reference to fabricating the veneer. A 3-dimensional scan of the teeth is created to determine the exact dimensions, shape, and contour of the veneer. The scans and mold will be sent to a dental laboratory for fabricating the veneer. It would take a few days for the veneer to be made. Until then, the dentist would install a temporary veneer. During the next visit, the tooth will be thoroughly cleaned and an etching compound will be applied to it. This is done to roughen the tooth so that the veneer can properly adhere to its surface. Dental adhesives are used to bond the veneer firmly to the surface of the tooth. Any excess adhesive is removed and the veneer is checked for fit and comfort. A special curing light is used to harden the adhesive, after which the bite is evaluated and the veneer is polished. How to care for veneers? Veneers are made of porcelain and have similar external properties as the enamel of your teeth. They stain and wear like natural teeth. Hence, excessive consumption of colored foods, beverages, smoking and chewing tobacco should be avoided as they could stain the veneers. Trying to open plastic bags or bottle caps with your veneers can often damage them, and hence, should be avoided. Regular brushing and flossing help in maintaining good oral hygiene and also increase the life expectancy of veneers.
