Dentures Specialist A leader in dental care in East Palo Alto, CA, Palo Alto Dental Spa provides comfortable, natural-looking dentures, including immediate "same day" dentures, for patients. Dentures Q&A What are immediate dentures? Immediate dentures are dentures that are crafted before your teeth are removed so that they are ready to be worn as soon as your teeth are extracted. With conventional dentures, there is normally a need to wait for several weeks while your gums heal before the dentures are fitted to your mouth, which means you are without teeth for that period. Immediate dentures mean you will have teeth right away, but you will need to return for follow-up visits to have your dentures re-fitted once the gums heal. What if I'm only missing a few teeth? Can I still get dentures, or will I need a bridge? No, if you're only missing a few teeth, or even just one, you can receive a partial denture that replaces just those teeth. How should I care for my dentures? Dentures need regular care just like your teeth. They should be cleaned every morning and again at night and placed in solution when they are not being worn to keep them wet. You still need to see the dentist on a regular basis to have your gums checked and for regular oral care and screening. Be sure to bring your dentures so they can be adjusted if needed. How long will it be before my dentures feel comfortable? At first, your dentures may feel bulky or loose. Some people feel their teeth are protruding. These are all common sensations that resolve once your mouth get used to the way the dentures feel. To become comfortable, it's important to wear your dentures as much as possible during the “breaking in” period; you might even want to practice reading out loud to improve the way you feel while speaking. Most people feel more comfortable wearing their dentures after a few weeks. If you have sore spots or your dentures feel loose, your dentist can easily make an adjustment. Adult & Pediatric Dental Checkups Specialist The dentists at Palo Alto Dental Spa help patients in the East Palo Alto, CA, area get the preventive and proactive dental care they need with regular adult and pediatric dental checkups aimed at diagnosing issues in their earliest and most treatable stages. Adult & Pediatric Dental Checkups Q&A What happens in a dental checkup? At Palo Alto Dental Spa, we provide custom care for each patient. During your checkup, we'll carefully evaluate your teeth and gums, providing regular cleaning to prevent decay and check for gum issues, and take x-rays when needed to look for signs of decay below the gum line. Your dentist will discuss the health of your teeth and gums as well as reviewing possible additional care such as deep cleaning or fillings you may need to keep your teeth and gums their healthiest. Plus, we offer amenities like comfy pillows and blankets, towels, flat screen TVs, and nitrous oxide or “laughing gas” to make your visit comfortable and relaxing. How often should adults and children see the dentist? Seeing the dentist twice a year is important for patients of every age. Twice-yearly appointments help your dentist identify issues early on when they can be more easily treated, and it can also help you and your child avoid issues like gum disease and other concerns that can have a significant impact on dental health. Plus, seeing the dentist every six months ensures patients receive the guidance they need to help keep their teeth and gums as healthy as possible between office visits. How can the dentists at Palo Alto Dental Spa help me protect my child's teeth from damage and decay? Of course, maintaining a schedule of regular dental checkups is essential for preventing decay and maintaining optimal oral health. The dentists at Palo Also Dental Spa also use special sealants designed to protect molars and back teeth – the teeth that tend to receive the most force from grinding and chewing – from bacteria, plaque and food particles. Sealants are applied as a liquid which becomes hard and can last as long as 10 years. For student athletes, we offer a complete range of custom-designed mouthguards fitted specifically for each child's mouth for superior comfort and protection. Bridges & Crowns Specialist As top providers of dental care in East Palo Alto, CA, the dentists at Palo Alto Dental Spa are committed to using the highest-quality dental implants, bridges, and crowns so patients can experience the best results possible. Bridges & Crowns Q&A What are bridges? Bridges are dental devices that are used to replace one or more missing teeth. Bridges include a support framework and one or more prosthetic teeth. The bridge is attached to the teeth on either side of the gap. In most cases, crowns are applied to these teeth ahead of time to help strengthen them so they can adequately support the bridge without becoming damaged themselves. What are crowns? Crowns are durable, protective coverings that surround a tooth. They can be used in many applications, including cosmetic procedures to hide large or dark fillings or badly stained teeth, to provide extra support for teeth supporting a bridge, to help strengthen teeth that have large or extensive fillings and to provide additional support for teeth that have undergone root canals. What are dental implants? Dental implants are prosthetic teeth that feature a metal post implanted in the bone that supports the tooth. Implants are designed to look and function just like your natural teeth. What is the dental implant procedure like? Dental implants usually take about three visits to complete. During the first visit, the metal post is implanted in your bone and allowed to heal and fuse with the bone for several weeks. At the second visit, an abutment is attached to the post to support the prosthetic tooth or crown, and an impression is made that will serve as a guide for creating the crown. In the third visit, the prosthetic tooth will be attached to the abutment and shaped for an ideal fit. Are implants hard to care for? No. The dentists at Palo Alto Dental Spa use only the most advanced materials to ensure your implants are easy to care for – just brush and floss like your natural teeth and have regular checkups to ensure the gums stay healthy. Gum Disease Treatment & Prevention Specialist As a top dental practice in the East Palo Alto, CA, area, Palo Alto Dental Spa has expert dentists skilled in all methods of gum disease treatment and prevention, using state-of-the-art technology to achieve optimal results in every patient. Gum Disease Treatment & Prevention Q&A What causes gum disease? Gum disease (also called periodontal disease) begins with the buildup of sticky plaque on the tooth surface and especially between teeth and at the gum line. Plaque provides the ideal environment for the buildup of disease-causing bacteria. Over time, plaque hardens into tartar, a tough substance that can't be removed with brushing and flossing alone. Tartar shelters bacteria, allowing it to multiply and reach below the gum line. As the bacteria multiply, they release toxins that cause the gum tissue to pull away from the teeth, weakening tooth roots and eventually causing tooth loss. In the early stages of gum disease, called gingivitis, there may be few if any symptoms. As gum disease develops into periodontitis, symptoms can include bad breath, bleeding gums, tooth sensitivity, weak tooth roots and eventually tooth loss. What risks are associated with gum disease? Aside from tooth loss, studies have suggested a link between gum disease and systemic diseases including heart disease, stroke and diabetes, as well as effects on the body's entire immune system. How is gum disease treated? Brushing and flossing alone are not enough to treat gum disease. While regular cleanings are important to prevent disease from occurring, once disease is present, you may need more in-depth cleaning procedures called root scaling and planing, techniques that are designed to reach below the gum line and remove bacteria as well as tartar. Root scaling and planing is often divided into multiple appointment to teat different sections of the mouth. The dentists at Palo Alto Dental Spa also use a special antibiotic called Arestin to treat cleaned areas around the tooth roots to kill remaining bacteria and prevent new bacteria from taking hold. While today's planing and scaling techniques are simple and straightforward, you may be numbed to prevent discomfort if tartar buildup is significant. Invisalign, Whitening, and Veneers Specialist Having straight, beautiful teeth can help you feel more confident about your whole appearance. At Palo Alto Dental Spa in East Palo Alto, CA, we help patients get the beautiful smiles they want with cutting-edge treatments like Invisalign, natural-looking veneers and advanced whitening methods. Invisalign, Whitening, and Veneers Q&A What causes teeth to become stained? Although teeth may seem hard and durable, they are still susceptible to staining that can occur from regular consumption of different foods and drinks, like coffee, tea, red wine and dark berries. Smoking can also cause teeth to look dim and yellow. How does professional whitening work? Professional whitening uses powerful but safe agents specifically designed for professional use only to gently but effectively remove stains and discoloration that make teeth look old or dingy. Thanks to special formulations of professional whitening systems, they are much more effective than over-the-counter products, providing longer-lasting results with treatments that are safer for the tooth's delicate structure. Palo Alto Dental Spa uses the Zoom! Whitening system, which combines a special light-sensitive whitening gel with a special activating light system designed to help remove even the most stubborn stains. Can I whiten my teeth at home? Yes; Palo Alto Dental Spa also offers an at-home tray system that uses an impression of your teeth to create a custom tray designed to ensure the special whitening formulation reaches all the “nooks and crannies” of your teeth for professional results right in your own home. What is Invisalign? Invisalign is a patented orthodontic system that relies on a series of custom-made trays specifically designed to fit your mouth. Over time, these trays gently move your teeth into proper alignment. Because they are made of smooth, clear plastic, they are nearly invisible, and they can be removed when you eat and to make it easy to brush and floss your teeth. What are veneers? Veneers are thin ceramic shells that cover the surface of the teeth to cover defects like cracks, chips, pits and stubborn stains and to address issues like uneven edges, gaps or other imperfections that can mar your beautiful smile. They are designed to be strong and long-lasting and are easy to apply and maintain. Wisdom Teeth & Oral Surgery Specialist As one of the top oral surgery providers in East Palo Alto, CA, the dentists at Palo Alto Dental Spa are skilled in all types of oral surgery including wisdom teeth extractions, bone grafting, and cosmetic periodontal surgery, using state-of-the-art technology to achieve optimal results in every patient. Wisdom Teeth & Oral Surgery Q&A Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed? No, wisdom teeth only need to be removed when they erupt through the gum line in a way that can cause crowding, decay or other problems with the teeth or gums. Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to come in, and often, they have little room to grow. As a result, they may come in at an angle or only partially erupt, causing pain, infection and even damage to the underlying jaw bone. When wisdom teeth cause problems like these, they need to be removed. No need to worry – The dentists at Palo Alto Dental Spa use the most advanced extraction methods aimed at minimizing discomfort before and after extractions. What is a bone graft? A bone graft is a procedure that uses bone removed from another area of the mouth or a donor graft to build up areas of the jaw bone that have become damaged or atrophied due to untreated decay or tooth loss. Grafting can help ensure your jaw is strong enough to support a dental implant and for other periodontal treatments. Can oral surgery improve the look of a “toothy” or “gummy” smile? Yes, there are special procedures that can be used to expose more teeth or add additional gum tissue to areas where the gum-to-tooth ratio is inadequate. These remodeling procedures don't just make your smile look more balanced – they also help protect teeth and gums that may be overexposed to the buildup of damaging bacteria that can cause gum disease. What is frenectomy? Frenectomy is a simple procedure that releases or relaxes the tissue connecting your lip and gum to correct certain types of speech problems that develop when this tissue is too tight or thick. The dentists at Palo Alto Dental Spa perform frenectomies using scalpels or lasers, depending on each patient's needs. Root Canals Specialist The dentists at Palo Alto Dental Spa help patients in the East Palo Alto, CA, area preserve their natural teeth with root canals using advanced techniques like rotary endodontics for procedures that are fast and virtually pain free. Root Canals Q&A What is a root canal? A root canal is a special procedure developed to remove the interior portion of the tooth – the pulp – where nerves, blood vessels and connective tissues are located. Sometimes, this area of the tooth can become infected, decayed or injured to an extent where a “regular” filling isn't enough to repair the damage. A root canal uses special techniques to remove the damaged material inside the tooth, filling the tooth and sealing it to prevent additional damage. Left untreated, decay can spread to the underlying bone where ti can cause much more serious damage. Is a root canal better than having the tooth pulled? In nearly all cases, it's always better to keep your natural tooth in place than to have it pulled. Keeping your tooth means your bite pattern won't be altered, which means you can avoid jaw strain that can lead to tempomandibular joint disorder (TMD). Keeping the tooth also means neighboring teeth won't “lean in” toward the gap which can weaken roots and lead to additional tooth loss. Even with dentures or a bridge, the jaw bone can atrophy over time once the tooth is removed. Will I have a lot of pain during or after the procedure? Despite what you may have heard about root canal therapy, today's modern pain relief methods eliminate much if not all of the discomfort of the procedure, and new techniques like rotary endodontics allow the procedure to be performed more quickly. Many patients experience no discomfort, and those who do have discomfort typically say it's no different from the discomfort that comes from having a filling, mostly confined to some aching near the injection site. Any discomfort you do feel afterward can be relieved with over-the-counter medications or prescription medication when necessary. White fillings are fillings that are made of tooth-colored material so that, when used to fill a cavity, they blend in with the surrounding tooth material, making them essentially invisible to anyone other than your dentist or dental hygienist. In recent years, tooth-colored fillings have increased in popularity as patients seek to maintain the appearance of a natural, healthy-looking smile even when restorative treatments are necessary. Can white fillings be used to cover metal fillings? No; just like traditional metal amalgam fillings, white fillings have to be placed against your natural tooth surface in order to properly bond and prevent bacteria from entering the tooth. That means the old amalgam filling will need to be removed and replaced with a brand new white filling. Removing the old filling also gives your dentist an opportunity to ensure additional decay has not formed beneath or around the metal filling. Crowns provide another option to cover teeth with large, dark fillings. What are tooth-colored fillings made of? Natural-colored fillings are composed of resins that are built up in layers to mimic the way natural teeth are formed. That allows them to form a stronger bond with the tooth's surface to seal out bacteria that can cause decay. A stronger bond also means composite fillings are less likely to chip, break or fall out. Do white fillings cost more than metal amalgam fillings? White fillings do tend to be more costly than amalgam fillings, but most patients find the extra cost is worth the added self-confidence that comes from having a healthy-looking smile. Plus, white fillings' stronger bond with the natural tooth surface make them an excellent investment in your long-term dental health.
