They can be reached at [email protected] . Grandparent's Club Expand Grandparents have a profound influence on their grandchildren in many different ways, from the love and mentoring you give them to the ways in which you complete their sense of self and family. But, do you also want to make a difference in the lives of your grandchild(ren) at school? If your grandkids attend school in the Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD) schools, you can help make their school days better by making a gift to Palo Alto Partners in Education (PiE), the nonprofit foundation that contributes operating funds to Palo Alto schools. Why Give to PiE? Because PiE is about the extra support and enrichment that we want for the students of Palo Alto schools. Donations to PiE pay for the caring aides in the elementary classroom, who tie the shoelaces or spend extra time on fractions. PiE pays for hands-on art and science, and for counseling and efforts to reduce school bullying. In the upper grades, PiE gifts fuel more science, technology and arts electives for students to pursue, helping them find their interests in school. And PiE pays for guidance and college and career counseling, to support students in schools and beyond. In short, programs provided by PiE donors do many of the things in our schools that grandparents do with their grandchildren, giving them that extra hand, extra interest, and extra few minutes of caring adult time. Learn how PiE makes a difference We ask PAUSD families to give $1,500 per student per year to close the gap between what our schools can afford and what you want for your grandchildren. Our Leadership Circle begins at gifts of $3,500. Won’t you please consider a gift in honor of your grandchild’s education of $100, $250, or more? PiE is a 501(c)(3) and all gifts are tax deductible. Thank you for considering supporting our schools and your grandchildren by giving to PiE. Other Gifts Expand For information regarding wire transfers, planned giving or other gifts, including gifts in kind, please call Linda Lyon, Executive Director, at 650-329-3990 or email [email protected] . Maintaining and building upon the academic excellence which draws families to our neighborhoods and keeps property values high, we not only depend on parents but upon philanthropists and community-minded individuals who might not currently have children enrolled in Palo Alto Unified schools. Grandparents, parents of PAUSD alumni students, neighbors, civic-minded individuals, along with local small businesses and foundations all helped PiE achieve its $4.9 million gift last year. Our Community Direct Appeal permits non-parent community members to help fund our school campaign and PiE Innovation Grants. Corporate sponsors also help by providing matching gifts and local foundations and businesses can become PiE Business Partners . A donation to PiE represents both an investment in the future of the children of Palo Alto, and an affirmation of the core community value of an outstanding public education. It sends a powerful message of caring about the growth and future of all children in our public schools. Last year PiE received $78,927 from individual community members. Thank you, in advance, for your investment in our children’s future. PAUSD Teachers and Staff: It's time to apply for a PiE Innovation Grant! Application deadline is February 27th. Apply Today ! The PiE Innovation Grant Program for teachers and staff was established in 1987 by Partners in Education's predecessor organization, Palo Alto Foundation for Education. Over $1.55 million has been awarded in more than 30 rounds of grants, the most recent in Spring 2025. The PiE Innovation Grants Program emphasizes new ideas and collaboration. The program welcomes applications from teachers and other staff who are seeking to innovate, to create, and to work together with others. Special consideration is given to grant applications that will encourage collaboration among grade levels or different schools. The grant committee also prefers to see grants where the lessons learned from the funds granted can be expanded to benefit other grades or schools. The next grant round will open on December 8, 2025, for consideration in March 2026. All grant applications will need to be completed by February 27, 2026. Applicants will be notified of their outcomes in April 2026. Everyone is encouraged to apply according to the guidelines below. If you have questions, please email [email protected] . Thank you for your interest! Watch our recorded webinar for a more in-depth explanation of what PiE looks for in a grant application! Grant Program Guidelines Expand The PiE Innovation Grant Program was created to encourage teachers, staff, and parents, students, and community members collaborating with teachers and staff to use innovative teaching methods to promote learning. Innovation and collaboration are the cornerstones of successful applications for PiE grants. The PiE Innovation Grants are not intended to replace existing district funding, but they are an opportunity to seed innovation in school programs, providing funding for projects that may be beyond the scope of district or site funding. Grants must demonstrate: A strong curricular justification Evidence of innovation, creativity, and excellence Measurement of expected student outcomes A reasonable budget Grants demonstrating collaboration across grades, schools or disciplines are especially welcomed. PiE hopes that successful grants will be replicated, shared or adopted more broadly across the district. Applicants may be members of any of the following Palo Alto Unified School District groups: Teachers Principals Classified employees Parent groups (e.g., PTA, Site Council)* Student groups ( under teacher supervision )* Community groups* * If a grant is being submitted by a parent, student or community group, the grant application must be submitted by a PAUSD staff sponsor with a [email protected] address. How to Apply for a Grant Expand Applying To apply for a PiE Innovation Grant, you must fill out the online application using our grant management software. See what the application questions are before creating an account. You must create an account to apply for a PiE grant. Only applications submitted using our online application, requested by those with an ...@pausd email address, will be accepted. Please answer each question in the proposal, and indicate "N/A" if a particular question is not relevant to your proposal. Proposals should be clear and concise, yet descriptive of the project. Please put as much detail in your application as possible. We want to know who it will benefit, why it's a valuable project, how you will implement it, what is innovative and when you will know if it's successful! Examples of the application questions: State the specific objectives of the grant, addressing the specific curricular or site plan goals Tell us what is innovative about the project Who and how many students and/or staff members will be affected? What will be the impact on student learning/specific ties to student outcomes? How will you evaluate success of the project and how it is linked to student outcomes? Is the project sustainable or replicable in the future? What is your plan for continuing the program if it is successful but additional funding will be needed? Requested PiE Innovation Grant Amount Use the budget worksheet (.xls file) to complete your budget for the project. PiE Innovation Grants can be for any amount, though most proposals for individual projects are for amounts up to $3,000, and those with collaboration with other teachers or schools are typically for up to $15,000. We do NOT fund: iPods, iPads, ChromeBooks, laptops, furniture, food, transportation, or consumables that would need to be purchased each year (including ongoing salaries). We generally do not fund professional development. We do not fund ongoing staffing. We tend to favor: Projects that integrate several departments, supplemental curriculum development that goes beyond regular instruction, special equipment that can be used over several years, and seed projects that can expand easily to other classes or schools. PiE requests that you contact the grants committee at [email protected] for preliminary approval before submitting any application that exceeds these funding guidelines. Ways to Give Donate Make a Pledge Employer Match Stock Donation Volunteer Business Partners Community Partners Contact Us About Mission & Values Board of Directors Advisory Council Volunteers & Staff Reports FAQs FAQs General Questions What is PiE? Expand Palo Alto Partners in Education (PiE) is a non-profit education foundation devoted exclusively to raising funds for all PAUSD schools. Powered by a dedicated team of parent volunteers, PiE helps provide important programs and additional instructional staff so that our students can thrive, receive an enriched education and be well prepared for the 21st century. Funds raised by PiE help all 10,320 pre-K through 12th grade PAUSD students in 19 schools. It is funding from PiE that truly makes the difference between merely a solid education and an excellent one. PiE was created 20 years ago to help address the gap between what Palo Alto families wanted for their children and what state and local funding provided. Because of generous donations to PiE from parents in our community, we have music, art, counseling, and a range of electives to spark student passions. Through PiE, we can fund more than 250 additional adults who provide support throughout PAUSD schools. Why do Palo Alto schools need PiE? Expand A well-rounded education with smaller class sizes and extras such as music, art, science, counseling, etc., is something we want for our kids. When Proposition 13 slashed education funding in California, these programs fell out of the funding equation. This is the case for Palo Alto and for many districts throughout in California. Hundreds of school districts throughout the state have education foundations, like PiE, to supplement the education we want for our students. While PAUSD is well regarded among California school districts, the fact remains that California is ranked 21st in the nation for per-student funding. Prop 13 limited property tax rates and increases and set assessed values at 1976 levels, unless a property has been sold or expanded through a remodel. Prop 13 effectively cut funding for public schools in California in half. Compared to high performing districts elsewhere in the U.S., (Jericho Union Free, Scarsdale, New Trier, New York) per-student funding in PAUSD is far less than in many of these other top districts. How much should I give? Expand We encourage people to give an amount that is meaningful to you and your family. Our suggested donation amount is $1,500 per child in the district. If that doesn’t feel like the right amount, please consider giving something that is comfortable. Every dollar makes a difference. We welcome and encourage gifts of any level so that everyone can participate in the campaign and have a stake in the education of all of our students. Every single gift makes an impact for the students and it truly is a whole community effort to support our schools through PiE. Please join us. What is PiE’s involvement in equity? Expand PiE was founded to create programmatic equity among the PAUSD schools. Prior to PiE, PTAs raised funds for classroom aides and additional staff and hired them for their individual schools. Thus, the PTAs that raised a lot of donations had more programs than those that didn't raise as much. In order to make the schools equitable, in 2002 the School Board mandated that funds for staff had to be raised by a district-wide organization and evenly distributed. This led to the formation of an organization called All Schools Fund that later became PiE. PiE raises funds from PAUSD parents and community members and distributes the funds on a per-pupil basis to each school. As we understand there are varying measures of what constitutes equity, we feel the equal distribution of PiE funds is as equitable as possible. Today, we fund staff members who provide instruction and enrichment as well as social-emotional learning and support at every school. The same opportunities are provided to every student regardless of whether or how much an individual family donates. We do not track how much each school raises. We are often asked to share funds with the Ravenswood School District. Our mission and our contract with PAUSD explicitly state we can only raise money for PAUSD and that we are the sole organization that can fund staff in PAUSD. While not providing direct funding, PiE works with Ravenswood in other ways. PiE's Executive Director, Erika Buck, is in an Education Foundation Roundtable with the Executive Director of the Ravenswood Education Foundation where they share ideas and best practices. The two also individually meet to discuss the needs of both organizations. A segment of Ravenswood students are able to attend Palo Alto schools (as well as schools in Belmont-Redwood Shores, Las Lomitas, Menlo Park, Portola Valley, San Carlos and Woodside) through the Tinsley Program, or Voluntary Transfer Program (VTP). Each year, 60 new students in K-2 join the program for Palo Alto and those students stay in the district through 12th grade. Currently, there are about 600 students in the VTP program in Palo Alto. These students receive the full benefit of PiE-funded staff. For many under-represented and impoverished students within PAUSD, exposure to art, music, science labs, counseling, etc., would not be available in the same way without PiE’s funding. For those who want to direct specific support to PAUSD students in need, there are two foundations that provide scholarships to college-bound graduates of each of the high schools. The focus is on those who are from underprivileged households or are the first in their families to go to college. Learn more by visiting Gunn Foundation and Rise Together Education (Paly). If I’m unhappy with my teacher, principal, or the district, why should I give to PiE? Expand Not donating to PiE means PiE will have less money to give to each Principal for each student. This affects the Principals’ budgets directly as they will not get extra funding from the District to cover the gap. It means fewer staff to teach and support our kids at each school site. The impact of reduced PiE funding will be felt by students most of all. If you are upset with an aspect of your child’s education, please communicate your concerns to your teacher, principal, superintendent and/or school board. They all want to ensure your child has access to the best education possible, and is enjoying their school experience. Is PiE independently audited? Expand We undergo an annual independent audit. You can see our Audited Financial Statements and our IRS 990 filings for several years on our PiE Financials webpage. PiE received the highest rating of Platinum from the charity evaluation website GuideStar. Why should I give money to both PiE and my school’s PTA? Expand PiE and PTA are both crucial parts of the “funding puzzle” that the district must assemble every year to keep our schools strong. What the two organizations fund are different and do not overlap. Both organizations are needed to elevate the educational experience for the students of Palo Alto. PiE is the only fundraising organization permitted by the Palo Alto Board of Education to pay for salaries during the school day. PiE is committed to an equitable distribution of funds across PAUSD schools on a per-pupil basis, so that all students benefit. The PTA supports materials, programs and events at individual school sites. PTA funds such things as classroom enrichment and supplies, school site improvements, playground equipment, student scholarships for field trips, and site-specific programs such Make a Pledge - Palo Alto Partners in Education Skip to content Donate Menu Home Who We Are Mission, Vision & Values Board of Directors Advisory Council Volunteers & Staff Annual & Financial Reports FAQs What We Do Elementary Schools Middle Schools High Schools PiE Innovation Grants News & Videos Slices of Joy Submit A Story Alumni Stories: Baked with PiE Share Your PiE Story! Vision PiE’s volunteers, in partnership with parents, schools, and the community, will ensure every student in the Palo Alto Unified School District experiences an enriched and fulfilling education. Values Education Matters – We believe that a prosperous society has its roots in a strong, well-funded public school system. Funding Matters – We believe consistently well-funded schools are able to prepare our graduates to meet the challenges and opportunities of our world. Partnership – We join forces with parents, the school district, PTAs, boosters, principals, teachers, students, businesses, and the extended community to enhance Palo Alto Unified School District schools for all students. Equity – We are dedicated to the founding ideals of equality as we strive to provide an enriched education to all Palo Alto Unified School District students. Academic and Personal Growth – We support schools in their efforts to nourish our children’s intellect, self-expression, social skills, and engagement with the larger world. Broad Support – We welcome all donations, large and small, and recognize that broad community involvement sends a powerful message of caring about the growth and future of all children in our public schools. Volunteer Diversity – Volunteers from all backgrounds strengthen PiE and our schools. Integrity – Fundraising efforts are conducted with honesty and adherence to the highest degree of ethical standards. Efficiency – A foundation run primarily by dedicated volunteers maximizes the contribution to schools and minimizes overhead. Innovation – We are committed to innovation in addressing our District’s funding needs, and to facilitating the District's innovation in teaching. Please read our 2017-2026 strategic plan , including our top priorities for this period. Ways to Give Donate Make a Pledge Employer Match Stock Donation Volunteer Business Partners Community Partners Contact Us About PiE Watch Video About Mission & Values Board of Directors Advisory Council Volunteers & Staff Reports FAQs Translate Page English Korean Mandarin Spanish Palo Alto Partners in Education (PiE) is the only Palo Alto non-profit educational foundation devoted exclusively to raising money for all Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD) schools, and the only foundation dedicated to raising funds to pay for PAUSD teachers and staff. We work with parents, the school district, and the community to provide all students an enhanced educational experience. PiE is the district's essential partner in providing support and enrichment opportunities that help every child receive a well-rounded, fulfilling education from PAUSD. We distribute funds on an equal per-pupil basis at each school throughout the district. See our videos page Why should I support PiE? Public financing alone can no longer provide the high quality education we expect in this community. In order to maintain and build upon the academic excellence of PAUSD schools, which draws families to Palo Alto schools neighborhoods and keeps property values high, the community must seek additional funding. California's ranking on per-student spending on education has steadily decreased since the passage of Proposition 13 in 1978, a consequence of the state's tax-reform efforts. Two types of school classifications resulted from this funding reduction: Basic Aid and Revenue Limited. Revenue Limited districts do not raise enough taxes locally to meet the state minimums and therefore receive funding from the state based on the number of students enrolled. Basic Aid districts (such as Palo Alto) are perceived to have enough local tax revenue to meet minimum school funding and, thus, receive relatively little state funding. As a Basic Aid district, we rely on the generosity of local donors and ballot measures, in addition to federal and state funding, to supplement property taxes and support the school district’s high standards of excellence. Your gifts to PiE are essential to preserve an outstanding education at PAUSD. PiE dollars now make up an average of 63% of the flexible funding that PAUSD principals can spend at each school for school-specific support and enrichment otherwise not funded by the district. These dollars fund classroom aides, counseling, arts, music and science in all our elementary schools; counselors and transition programs, sciences, arts and music electives and classroom support at Greene, JLS, and Fletcher; student guidance and support, additional sciences, arts and music electives, and college and career counseling at Gunn and Paly. History of PiE Established in 2005 through the merger of two existing local foundations – Palo Alto Foundation for Education (PAFE) and the All Schools Fund (ASF) – PiE was created in response to a 2002 PAUSD Board of Trustees decision to equalize funding for every school in the district by disallowing site-based funds for staffing, so that resources are distributed equitably. Today, PiE has become the only Palo Alto non-profit organization that raises funds for staff at all PAUSD schools. Since 2005, PiE has given more than $81 million to PAUSD to support Palo Alto public education. While in the early years PiE paid for the "nice to have" programs on campus, today donations to PiE are crucial for maintaining core programs like general classroom aides, arts instruction, student guidance, additional electives in science and the arts, mental health counseling, and college and career counseling. Without your donations to PiE, PAUSD students would attend schools markedly different, with many fewer instructors and supporting staff for each student. Hundreds of volunteers and thousands of donors have worked with PiE to make sure our children receive an enriched education in Palo Alto schools. Together, we will continue to make a difference for our children.
