For some patients, more frequently cleanings may be necessary. Our community has been through a lot over the last few months, and all of us are looking forward to resuming our normal habits and routines. While many things have changed, one thing has remained the same: our commitment to your safety. Infection control has always been a top priority for our practice and you may have seen this during your visits to our office. Our infection control processes are made so that when you receive care, it’s both safe and comfortable. We want to tell you about the infection control procedures we follow in our practice to keep patients and staff safe. Our office follows infection control recommendations made by the American Dental Association (ADA), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). We follow the activities of these agencies so that we are up-to-date on any new rulings or guidance that may be issued. You may see some changes when it is time for your next appointment. We made these changes to help protect our patients and staff. For example: All patients must wear a mask when entering the office. Anyone accompanying you will be asked to wait in their vehicle. Our office will communicate with you beforehand to ask some screening questions. You’ll be asked those same questions again when you are in the office. Upon arrival at your appointment your temperature will be taken for the safety of all staff and patients. Prior to receiving treatment you will be asked to rinse with an antimicrobial for a minimum of 30 seconds We have hand sanitizer that we will ask you to use when you enter the office. You will also find some in the reception area and other places in the office for you to use as needed. You may see that our waiting room will no longer offer magazines, and so forth, since those items are difficult to clean and disinfect. UV Air purifiers have been placed throughout the office. Appointments will be managed to allow for social distancing between patients. That might mean that you’re offered fewer options for scheduling your appointment. We will do our best to allow greater time between patients to reduce waiting times for you, as well as to reduce the number of patients in the reception area at any one time, so we ask that you do your best to be on time. We look forward to seeing you again and are happy to answer any questions you may have about the steps we take to keep you, and every patient, safe in our practice. To make an appointment, please call our office at (626)798-7834 or visit our website at [email protected]. Thank you for being our patient. We value your trust and loyalty and look forward to welcoming back our patients, neighbors and friends. If you’ve ever examined the structure of a tooth, you may have seen that it has deep indentations, also known as fissures. Notoriously difficult to clean, these grooves are especially susceptible to decay, and the majority of cavities will begin in these troughs. A dental sealant is a thin, translucent protectant that coats the surface of the teeth, smoothing out the pits and making it easier to maintain good dental hygiene. At Pasadena Smile Center, we offer non-toxic, BPA-free dental sealant as an effort to uphold our holistic dentistry standards. By keep potentially harmful chemicals away from our beloved patients we can ensure that we can provide some of the best dental care in Pasadena . Who is a good candidate for dental sealants? Children who tend to ignore their back teeth when brushing, or who hardly brush at all may benefit from receiving a dental sealant, which can significantly help to ward off cavities, saving a lot of time, money and discomfort. A child’s molars tend to come in between the ages of 5 and 7, and 11 and 14. These are excellent times for your child to undergo the sealant process. Sealants can also be beneficial for adults with deep grooves in their teeth, or for those who are genetically more prone to tooth decay. But isn’t fluoride enough? While the fluoride in many toothpastes and in dental cleanings does fortify the enamel of the teeth, it has a hard time penetrating those deeper ridges and fissures where food and bacteria love to hide. In short, fluoride is helpful, but it does not go far enough to protect your child’s teeth from decay. Advantages of dental sealants at a glance: Easy, pain-free application Short treatment time Up to ten years of protection from cavities Makes the teeth easier to brush and floss Matches the tooth color for a natural look Safe for all ages Cost-effective How long does a dental sealant last? If the sealant remains intact, then it can protect the teeth for up to a decade. Of course, it is normal for the sealant to undergo wear and tear throughout its lifetime, so it’s important to have the teeth checked regularly. If the sealant becomes compromised, then food and bacteria can reenter the grooves, eventually leading to decay. BPA-free sealants Most plastics contain a resin called Bisphenol A (BPA). There is some evidence that BPA is not healthy for children, and may affect their behavior, their brain chemistry, and their blood pressure. At present, BPA is banned by the FDA from being used in baby bottles and children’s cups. While dental sealants do not traditionally contain BPA, some compounds used in the sealant may turn into BPA when making contact with saliva. The way to eliminate this risk is to carefully scrub and rinse the sealants once they are applied to the teeth. In this way, up to 95% of the BPA-leaning compounds can be eradicated. Dr. Molayem is passionate about maintaining your child’s safety, and is careful to not only select holistic, bio-compatible, BPA-free materials throughout her practice, but to also scrub and meticulously rinse the dental sealants, eliminating all risk of compounds that might turn into BPA. Dr. Sanchita Mehra provides periodontic services and implant dentistry in the Pasadena dental practice of Niloufar Molayem, D.D.S. Dr. Molayem and Dr. Mehra take a holistic, conservative approach in their practice, using the least aggressive methods possible with the goal ensuring the well-being of the entire patient. Our dental team is committed to providing the highest quality care in a safe and friendly environment, offering a wide range of periodontic procedures. Bruxism (Tooth Grinding) The alignment of the teeth may need to be corrected to treat bruxism. In severe cases, this may involve onlays or crowns to reshape the biting surfaces. A mouth guard can help prevent further damage to the teeth and may help the teeth and muscles realign. Jawbone Corrective Treatment The jawbone may need corrective treatment as a result of periodontal disease, birth defects, or trauma. Common jawbone treatments include: Sinus augmentation: Before dental implants are placed, sinus augmentation may be needed to ensure that implants are firmly fixed to the bone and functional. In this procedure, the sinus floor is slightly elevated to allow new bone to form. Ridge modification: Placing dental implants can be a challenge when birth defects, gum disease, or trauma have left an indentation in the jawbone. In a ridge modification procedure, the gum is pulled away from the bone to expose the defect, which is filled with bone graft material and sutured closed. Regenerative Procedures When periodontal disease has destroyed the bone supporting the teeth, regenerative procedures may be recommended to help reverse the damage. The periodontist folds back the gum, removes bacteria, and uses bone grafts, membranes, or proteins to stimulate regeneration of bone and tissue. Pocket irrigation The goal of pocket irrigation is to clean plaque from between the teeth and under the gumline. It is typically performed in combination with other treatments, such as dental cleaning or pocket reduction surgery. Pocket Reduction Surgery Pocket reduction surgery is term for a group of several different procedures performed for the purpose of removing bacteria and tartar from the roots of the teeth. These procedures can help reduce the spread of bacteria, stop bone loss, facilitate cleaning, and enhance the appearance of the smile. Soft Tissue Grafting Soft tissue grafting is performed to treat gums that have receded due to periodontal disease, trauma, aging, or other causes. Soft tissue grafts are used to cover exposed tooth roots or to thicken gum tissue to help prevent further loss. Oral Treatment Periodontal disease is treated orally in antimicrobial therapy – the use of chemicals to kill or inhibit the growth of disease-causing bacteria. The two most common forms of antimicrobial therapy are antiseptics and antibiotics. Antiseptic rinses can help control the growth of bacteria in the mouth. Antibiotics, such as penicillin and tetracycline, are prescribed to treat difficult cases of gum disease. Periodontal disease can have a significant impact on overall health and appearance. If you are one of the millions of Americans who suffer with gum disease, schedule a consultation with Dr. Sanchita Mehra at the practice of Niloufar Molayem, D.D.S. in Pasadena to get started with the treatment you need. Periodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry that focuses on the structures surrounding and supporting the teeth, including the gums, alveolar bone, and periodontal ligament. It involves the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease, which can range from simple gum inflammation to severe damage to the soft tissue and bone that support the teeth. Our periodontists in Pasadena are experts in managing conditions such as gingivitis and periodontitis to restore and maintain oral health. Why is periodontics important? Periodontics plays a crucial role in maintaining overall oral health and preventing tooth loss. Healthy gums provide a foundation for healthy teeth, and untreated periodontal disease can lead to significant complications, including tooth mobility and loss. Furthermore, gum disease is linked to systemic conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and respiratory issues. As such, periodontal care not only helps preserve your natural teeth but also contributes to better overall health by reducing inflammation and bacterial load in the body. Periodontal Disease: If the periodontal disease has advanced, more extensive treatment will be required to restore the mouth, teeth, and gums to a healthy condition. If you are concerned about the treatment and/or prevention of periodontal disease, be sure to make an appointment with our Pasadena periodontist , Dr. Sanchita Mehra. Periodontal Disease >> Gum Recession: Receding gums are an indication of serious gum disease. As the gums recede, the tooth roots are revealed. The roots of the teeth are very susceptible to decay, and if the gums are receding, it is critical that the condition is treated rapidly by our periodontist in Pasadena . Gum Recession >> Gum Grafting: Advanced periodontics has brought new treatments in gum restoration, including gum grafting. If your gums have receded to the point in which the roots have been exposed, gum grafting may be part of your treatment plan. Gum Grafting >> Bone Grafting: Gum disease can eventually lead to loss of bone in the jaw. Bone grafting is a technique that restores jaw bone volume and encourages natural bone growth. Bone Grafting >> Crown Lengthening: For some patients, a crown lengthening procedure will be part of a custom-tailored treatment plan developed to resolve a dental problem. This procedure is performed to improve gum tissue health. Crown Lengthening >> Scaling & Root Planing: It may be necessary for a patient to have scaling and root planing as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. Our periodontist in Pasadena may advise this as a preventative treatment to ward off gum disease, or used to help treat a case of periodontal disease. Scaling & Root Planing >> Pinhole Tissue Graft Procedure: While gum grafting has been performed for years, the procedure required many appointments, involved pain and swelling, and could be hard on a patient. The Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST) is far less invasive and does not involve the grafting tissue, scalpels, surgical wounds or stitches. Pinhole Tissue Graft >> Other Periodontic Procedures: Gum disease is a widespread problem, affecting nearly half of adults ages 30 and older in the U.S. Treatment can involve a range of surgical and non-surgical procedures, depending on the nature and severity of the problem. Our periodontist in Pasadena is experienced and ready to help treat our patients in a variety of gum-related procedures, no matter how common or rare the case is. Other Procedures >> Why choose Pasadena Smile Center? At Pasadena Smile Center, we take a holistic approach to dental care. Led by our experienced periodontists in Pasadena , Dr. Niloufar Molayem and Dr. Sanchita Mehra, our practice prioritizes patient comfort over all else, ensuring you can achieve and maintain optimal oral health without discomfort. From affecting our appearance to creating challenges in basic activities like breathing and eating, dental concerns can pose multiple challenges for the sufferer. Immediate care and treatment can help reduce pain, improve facial movement, and provide stability to the teeth and jaws. Oral surgery is a branch of dentistry that uses surgical techniques to treat a variety of dental injuries and deformities. At the Pasadena Smile Center, Dr. Sanchita Mehra and her team specialize in oral surgery. Their extensive knowledge, skill, and expertise make them the perfect choice for your dental surgical requirements. Feel free to contact them for more information. What is Oral Surgery? Our face, mouth, teeth, and jaws can sometimes be victims to disease and accidents, resulting in injuries and deformities. Surgical intervention is one of the best ways to regain complete functionality of the face and the mouth. Oral surgery is designed to help patients suffering from dentofacial, oral, and maxillofacial problems. Using a combination of surgical techniques, the mouth, teeth, and jaws are given shape, structure, and stability. Typically, you visit a dentist for your dental treatments. But, for oral surgery, you need to visit oral surgeons who are specialized in dental surgical skills. Our Pasadena oral surgeons are here to assist you with anything you need. Contact us for more information. Reasons to Choose Oral Surgery Dental surgery is extremely beneficial in treating: Obstructive sleep apnea Pain in wisdom teeth Cleft palate Misaligned and broken jaw Oral cancer Teeth injuries (for reconstruction) TMD and bruxism Congenital dental deformities Types of Oral Surgery We Offer at our South Pasadena Clinic Here is a list of the surgeries that our doctors specialize in at the Pasadena Smile Center: Endodontic Surgeries Endodontics is the branch of dentistry dealing with the pulp and the root of the teeth. Common surgeries that are a part of endodontics are: Root canal therapy If there is an infection in the root canal or the pulp, then this infection is drained out using two procedures: Pulpotomy – opening the pulp chamber to drain the tooth Pulpectomy – temporarily removing the pulp from the chamber to relieve the tooth of pain Both these procedures together are called the root canal therapy. Apicoectomy If the root canal therapy has not provided the results needed, then our oral surgeons in Pasadena recommend a root resection surgery. Here, the tip of the root is removed, a root tip cavity is made and is filled with biocompatible filling. This treatment is designed to remove the infection and restore healthy teeth. Prosthodontics Surgeries Broken and chipped teeth aren’t just aesthetically unappealing, they’re also exceptionally painful. Prosthodontics is a branch of oral surgery which involves using dental prostheses to treat damaged teeth and jaws. Common dental prostheses include: Crowns Veneers Bridges Inlays and onlays Implants Orthodontic surgeries Dentofacial orthopedics, also known as orthodontics, deals with the surgical treatment of misaligned jaws and teeth. Accident victims and people afflicted with dentofacial illnesses are eligible candidates for the surgeries. Tooth extraction This is where diseased and damaged teeth are extracted from the mouth. Impacted wisdom tooth removal is one of the most common orthodontic procedures. Other orthodontic treatments Treatments like the Apicoectomy (where the bone underlying the root canal is removed) and Fiberotomy (where the fibers around the tooth are severed) are performed to treat severe dental conditions. Periodontics Surgeries Periodontal disease is a very severe affliction affecting thousands of people the world over. Impacting the gums and the tissues surrounding the teeth, periodontal disease can create multiple problems for sufferers. Using a combination of open flap debridement, osseous surgery, tissue regeneration, and bone grafting, your oral surgeon will treat the damaged and diseased periodontal region. The periodontal surgery is also recommended if there are signs of peri-implant diseases (inflammatory diseases surrounding dental implants). Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) OMFS focuses on treating deformities and damage to the head, mouth, neck, jaw, and teeth areas. Some of the common OMFS treatments are: Cosmetic dental surgeries Craniofacial, dentofacial, and maxillofacial restorations fall under this category. These cosmetic surgical treatments are designed to give the facial bones back their shape, structure, and stability. They are also designed to improve functionality in the face and dental regions. Corrective jaw surgery This surgery is performed when patients have a misaligned or broken jaw as a result of an accident or congenital deformity. Other OMFS procedures OMFS is conducted to help implant and embed dental and hearing devices on facial bones, underneath the skin. They are also helpful during complicated tooth extractions. Diagnosis and treatment of TMD, dentofacial cancer, and other dental deformities is also done through OMFS. Dr. Mehra and her team of qualified and talented Pasadena oral surgeons have extensive experience in all areas of dental surgery. Whether you need a tooth extraction or require surgical treatment for periodontal disease, you can trust the team here for superior-quality and timely help and treatment. Once you visit our clinic, Dr. Mehra will evaluate your teeth and advise you on your surgical requirements. Contact us for more information. Cost of the Procedures Cost of oral surgery depends on five factors: The type of treatment required Location of the tooth to be treated The surgeon performing the surgery Insurance coverage for the surgery Additional treatments, x-rays, and scans that are needed It’s best to speak to the doctor to get a good estimate about your procedure. This comprehensive approach addresses chips, gaps, discoloration, misalignment, and missing teeth to enhance both appearance and function. Combining artistry with advanced dental techniques, we tailor each makeover to help you achieve a radiant and natural-looking smile. Reveal your best and most natural-looking smile A smile makeover is a customized treatment plan that combines multiple cosmetic and restorative dental procedures to improve the appearance, function, and health of your smile. It may include teeth whitening, veneers, bonding, Invisalign, implants, gum contouring, and other procedures, depending on your needs and goals. Whether you're dealing with stains, chips, gaps, or missing teeth, a smile makeover addresses each concern to ensure aesthetic harmony. At Pasadena Smile Center, we take a holistic and artistic approach to ensure your smile looks natural, feels comfortable, and enhances your overall facial aesthetics. Reasons to consider smile makeovers: Chipped or cracked teeth Gaps between teeth Discolored or stained teeth Uneven or misshapen teeth Crooked or misaligned teeth Worn-down or short teeth Missing teeth Gummy or imbalanced smiles Common smile makeover procedures Your smile makeover at Pasadena Smile Center is designed to reflect your goals, facial features, and dental needs. We combine aesthetics with function to give you a healthy smile. Depending on your concerns, such as discoloration, misalignment, or missing teeth, we may recommend one or more of the following procedures to transform your smile: Teeth whitening: If your teeth are stained or discolored from food, beverages, or aging, professional whitening can dramatically brighten your smile. Our in-office treatments are stronger and more effective than over-the-counter products, providing fast, noticeable results. You'll leave with a radiant smile that enhances your confidence. Porcelain veneers: Veneers are thin, custom-made shells bonded to the front of your teeth to mask various dental imperfections. They’re ideal for correcting chips, gaps, uneven lengths, and severe discoloration. With porcelain veneers, your smile looks natural and symmetrical, and the results are both beautiful and long-lasting. Dental bonding: Bonding uses composite resin to correct small flaws like chips, cracks, and gaps. It’s a minimally invasive procedure that requires little to no enamel removal. In one visit, your smile can look smoother, more even, and more polished. Invisalign: If you have crooked, crowded, or gapped teeth, Invisalign offers a discreet way to straighten them without metal braces. Using a series of clear aligners, it gently shifts your teeth into alignment over time. It’s a comfortable option that fits easily into your lifestyle. Dental implants: Missing teeth can be permanently replaced with dental implants, which restore both the look and function of your smile. Implants are anchored into the jawbone and topped with lifelike crowns or bridges. Dental bridges help maintain bone structure, prevent shifting, and feel just like natural teeth. Fixed bridges: If you're missing one or more teeth in a row, a fixed porcelain bridge can fill the gap. This solution is anchored to adjacent teeth or implants and restores chewing ability while preserving facial structure. Gum contouring: If you feel your smile is too “gummy” or uneven, gum contouring can reshape the gumline for a more balanced appearance. Using laser or surgical techniques, excess gum tissue is gently removed to reveal more of your teeth. This small adjustment can make a dramatic difference in how your smile looks. Smile makeover FAQs How long does a smile makeover take? The timeline for your smile makeover depends on the number and type of procedures involved. Some treatments, like bonding or whitening, can be completed in a single visit, while others, such as Invisalign or dental implants, may take several months. Will people notice that I had dental work done? Our goal is always to create natural-looking results that complement your unique facial features. Rather than looking “done,” your smile will simply appear healthier and more balanced. Most people will notice your improved smile, but won’t be able to tell what changed. What’s the difference between a smile makeover and a full mouth reconstruction? A smile makeover is primarily cosmetic and focuses on improving the appearance of your smile. A full mouth reconstruction, on the other hand, is more comprehensive and medically necessary, often involving restorative treatments to rebuild damaged or missing teeth. Do veneers feel different from natural teeth? Veneers are designed to fit comfortably and feel as natural as possible. Initially, some patients may notice a slight difference in texture or thickness, but this sensation fades as they become accustomed to them. A properly placed veneer should not cause discomfort or feel unnatural. At Pasadena Smile Center we offer the groundbreaking new method of oral care known as Curodont which was developed to assist patients in achieving the radiant, healthy smile they really deserve through a natural and safe product. What is a Natural Tooth Healing Treatment? Instead of depending entirely on conventional dental treatments like fillings, extractions, and other procedures, natural tooth healing treatment uses natural remedies and strategies to maintain and improve oral health. Natural tooth healing aims to cure the root causes of dental difficulties and prevent further problems by encouraging general well being and good health through safe and effective natural products. At our clinic we utilize the curodont treatment which is an all natural way to heal the teeth. What is Curodont Treatment? Curodont treatment is a unique type of natural tooth healing method that promotes oral health by combining natural materials and methods. This specialized treatment addresses early carious lesions on the buccal, occlusal, and proximal surfaces of the teeth and is appropriate for patients 4 years of age and older. The service uses a patented CUROLOX® compound in a non-invasive, simple-to-apply manner to assist in the natural remineralization of teeth. Why is Curodont Different? Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus enables for the penetration of fluoride, calcium, and other minerals contained in saliva within the enamel, unlike typical fluoride treatments which simply reinforce the tooth's surface. Within the first few weeks after treatment, the tooth remineralizes and re-hardens as a result. That said, the Curodont treatment is intended to be used as an alternative to or in addition to conventional dental procedures. Benefits Of Natural Tooth Healing With Curodont Natural tooth healing using Curodont therapy has several advantages. Among the key advantages are: Promotes Overall Health: The goal of curodont is to improve overall health and wellness by treating the root causes of oral health issues. Reduces The Need For Conventional Dental Procedures: Curodont's natural tooth healing process can help decrease the need for conventional dental procedures like fillings, extractions, and other procedures by treating the underlying causes of oral health problems. Natural Tooth Healing: Curodont is a more non-invasive and gentle approach to oral care, which can be especially helpful for people who may be sensitive to conventional dental procedures. White is the only acceptable color for teeth today, both socially and professionally. Ultra-white teeth have become the new standard, partly because teeth whitening is so widely available, reasonably priced, and one of the fastest cosmetic dentistry procedures available. Niloufar Molayem, D.D.S. serves Pasadena and the surrounding area, providing teeth whitening and other high quality general and cosmetic dentistry services. Dr. Molayem is a conservative, holistic dentist . You can have confidence that she will recommend the least aggressive procedure to achieve oral health and your cosmetic goals, with your well-being as a whole patient foremost in mind. Teeth Whitening Methods Cosmetic dentistry has been in the spotlight for years, with our South Pasadena teeth whitening as the most popular cosmetic dental treatment in the area. As whiter teeth have become the number one aesthetic concern for many patients, several different ways to whiten the teeth have evolved, including over-the-counter products, peroxide formulate toothpaste, and whitening mouthwashes. Pasadena Cosmetic dentists may offer either or both of two different teeth whitening options – in-office whitening or at-home whitening. In-Office Teeth Whitening in Pasadena Teeth bleaching can be performed in a dental office in one or two visits, using either tray bleaching or lasers. In tray bleaching, the dentist takes an impression of your teeth, and an individual, custom tray is made to fit your mouth. The gel used for bleaching is applied in the tray, and then onto your teeth. The tray helps to decrease contact of the bleaching gel with gum tissue. This in-office bleaching process may take several visits to achieve the desired level of whitening. When a laser is used for teeth bleaching, the dentist first applies a protective gel or rubber dam to cover the gum tissue. A bleaching gel is applied and left on the teeth for a certain length of time, and ultraviolet laser light is used to activate the whitening agent in the gel. Several appointments may be needed for this procedure. What Can I Expect After My Teeth Whitening Procedure? At Pasadena Smile Center, our in-office teeth whitening system can whiten your teeth dramatically, giving you a picture-perfect smile. If you are planning on attending an upcoming event, our high-tech teeth whitening system can produce a brilliant smile in a single appointment. Whether you are attending a party, wedding, date, or other event, nothing gives you more confidence in your appearance than a beautiful, white smile. The procedure will make your teeth free from the stains they have accumulated from drinking coffee, tea, wine, or foods. For more extensively stained teeth, you may require more than one treatment to produce the most dramatic improvement. Is Bleaching Your Teeth Safe? When performed by our team of dental professionals at Pasadena Smile Center, you can be confident that your health and safety are always a priority. Your gums will be protected during the procedure, so only the teeth will be in contact with the bleaching agent. At-Home Teeth Whitening At-home teeth whitening, using gel and trays provided by your dentist, is the most popular method, and it dramatically whitens the teeth. This type of teeth bleaching typically requires two office visits. In your first visit, Dr. Molayem will take an impression of your teeth, and clear plastic trays will be custom-fabricated to fit. In your second visit, you will try on the bleaching trays to ensure a proper fit, and minor adjustments will be made, if needed. Dr. Molayem will send you home with care instructions for your teeth and trays. Depending on the level of whitening desired and the amount of staining of the teeth, the trays with the special whitening solution will be worn either for 30 minutes twice a day, or overnight for a few weeks. Tooth sensitivity is normal during teeth whitening, and it should subside soon after you are finished bleaching your teeth. How Long Does it Take to Whiten Teeth? If you choose our in-office professional teeth whitening, the entire procedure is typically one hour or less. Should you choose to use the at-home teeth whitening system, your teeth will whiten over several days to achieve the brilliant white shade you want. You will simply wear the trays with the bleaching substance for a short period each day until the right level of whiteness is achieved. Reasons for Teeth Whitening Teeth can become stained or discolored from several causes – excessive fluoride during tooth development; tetracycline and other medications; normal wear-and-tear of the outer tooth layer; smoking or drinking coffee, tea, colas, or wine. Teeth whitening has become the most popular cosmetic dental treatment for a number of reasons: Confidence in Your Smile: White teeth are something most people want. Pearly white teeth are simply more pleasing to look at than stained or yellow teeth. Unfortunately, no matter how diligently we brush or what toothpaste we use, many people have teeth that are not naturally white. No matter what color your teeth are naturally, our Pasadena teeth whitening is an effective, economical way to improve the brilliance and beauty of your smile. Painless Procedure: At-home teeth whitening, using custom-fabricated trays provided by your dentist, is a safe and painless, no-stress process that produces beautiful, dramatic results. You can whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home, while watching a movie or listening to music. Long-Lasting Results: One major benefit of teeth whitening is the long-term results it produces. This procedure can leave you with a much brighter smile for a very long time. You may need a touchup once every several years, particularly if you smoke or drink coffee, tea, or wine. Affordable Treatment: Today, teeth whitening is widely available and reasonably priced, so the average person can afford it. Having a beautiful, brilliant white smile can improve your appearance and raise your self-co Notice : Undefined variable: ub in /home/fai54o3qx5do/public_html/assets/inc/functions.php on line 304 Notice : Undefined variable: ub in /home/fai54o3qx5do/public_html/assets/inc/functions.php on line 316 Deprecated : strripos(): Non-string needles will be interpreted as strings in the future. Called “gingival recession,” this problem is treated with various techniques. One of the most effective methods to be developed is our Pasadena pinhole tissue graft . What is the Pinhole Tissue Graft procedure? While gum grafting has been performed for years, the procedure required many appointments, involved pain and swelling, and could be hard on a patient. The Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST) is far less invasive and does not involve the grafting tissue, scalpels, surgical wounds or stitches. This procedure makes it possible to reposition the gum tissue with the use of collagen membrane strips. The material in the collagen membrane has been used for many years, and is known to be safe for patients. Receding Gums Resolved. People can have receding gums for various reasons, including the use of certain medications, orthodontic treatment, and gum disease. As the gums recede, the root of the tooth is exposed which can lead to discomfort and teeth that appear longer and less attractive. Resolving this problem can be of paramount concern, both to the patient and our dentist. At Pasadena Smile Center, we are dedicated to staying current with the latest developments in holistic dentistry and can help you with this fast, minimally-invasive treatment. What are the benefits of PST (pinhole tissue graft)? The collagen membrane is placed through the pinhole and functions to immediately elevate gum tissue, covering the exposed root. For a fast, effective, and far less invasive treatment to restore appearance and function of receding gums, the PST procedure provides many important benefits to patients, including: Minimally invasive No bleeding No swelling No pain No sutures No incisions Multiple areas can be treated in one appointment A more aesthetic smile with exposed roots resolved Pinhole Graft Treatment vs. Standard Gum Graft Procedure The earlier standard procedure involved cutting a graft from the palate and then taking that natural material and attaching it with stitches to the area, leaving two areas with surgical wounds that require healing. To perform the procedure requires several hours and only one or two teeth can be treated at a time, with a recovery period of about two weeks before other areas can be addressed. The pinhole graft procedure does not involve removing material from the palate creating an open wound, or any sutures or a painful recovery time. The tiny pinhole produced in the procedure shrinks quickly, and typically disappears by the next day. Gum Disease and the Pinhole Graft Procedure The pinhole graft procedure restores gums to the natural gum line, but does not resolve gum disease. If you currently suffer from gum disease, your first step is to treat the condition. Once resolved, we can move forward to restore your gums with this fast, effective, and non-invasive treatment. Rather than needing many appointments, we can treat many teeth in one appointment, often all the teeth that have exposed roots. Pinhole Surgical Technique for Gums in Pasadena, CA We invite you to connect with us and find out more about PST gum treatment – before you consider undergoing traditional gum grafting surgery. We can save you the time and stress associated with grafting and restore your gums in one easy appointment. The ongoing pauses in breathing over your hours of sleep leave a person feeling dull and tired. Many people are unaware that they suffer from sleep apnea unless they share a bed with a partner, who is often awakened by the snoring, coughs, and snorts as the breath starts and stops, which can occur many times every hour. Types of Sleep Apnea There are two common types of sleep apnea: Obstructive Sleep Apnea: In this form of the condition, the breathing airway collapses or becomes blocked while sleeping, leading to shallow breathing or pauses in breathing, with a sudden intake of breath. When sucking in air through the blocked airway, the vibration creates the snoring sound. While this type of sleep apnea is more common in those with excess weight, it can affect any person of any age, including children. Central Sleep Apnea: This is a less common form of the condition, and related to the brain signals that trigger breathing. This condition can occur in people taking certain medications, or occur in combination with obstructive sleep apnea. Treatments for Sleep Apnea If you suspect you have sleep apnea, your first step is a full examination to determine the correct treatment for the condition. Sleep breathing masks that push air into the airways were once the standard treatment, but are uncomfortable and unwieldy. Dental Devices to Resolve Sleep Apnea Dental devices are now available to treat sleep apnea, and are far more gentle, easy to wear, comfortable, and can resolve the condition without the need for invasive surgery. In some cases, surgery may be necessary for cases in which the lower jaw is misaligned. At our practice, we seek out the most effective, non-invasive treatments for sleep apnea. Gum disease affects 70.1% of adults ages 65 and older. The primary goal of all types of periodontal treatment is to arrest the progress of gum disease. That involves killing bacteria, removing infection, and closing pockets in the gums. Our Pasadena laser gum treatment provides a new way to accomplish these goals that is less invasive, more comfortable, and may enhance the ability of the body to repair damage caused by infection. Niloufar Molayem, D.D.S. and Dr. Sanchita Mehra serve the Pasadena area, providing general and cosmetic dentistry, implant dentistry, and periodontics services, with a high level of care in a safe and friendly environment. Dr. Molayem and Dr. Mehra prefer to use the least aggressive methods possible, while ensuring the overall well-being of their patients. How Laser Gum Treatment Works In laser gum therapy, a special laser with a specific wavelength is used to target and destroy P. gingivitis bacteria, a common cause of gum disease. The dentist inserts a fiber the thickness of 3 human hairs into the diseased pocket of the gum to kill bacteria and infected tissue. Calculus (hardened dental plaque) is then removed with an ultrasonic root cleaner instead of traditional hand tools used for scraping. Finally, laser energy is used to warm the blood in the pocket, which makes the tissues sticky, creating a seal against the tooth root to protect the cleaned and disinfected pocket from germs and plaque. Laser gum treatment also stimulates stem cells to form more collagen, connective tissue, and bone. This encourages the natural healing process to regenerate ligament and bone that have been lost around the tooth. Benefits of Laser Gum Treatment The use of lasers represents cutting-edge treatment for periodontal disease. Lasers provide a painless and revolutionary option for killing harmful bacteria and make it possible to preserve teeth that may have been lost with standard treatments for periodontal disease. Compared with traditional methods, lasers may cause less pain, reduce the need for anesthesia, reduce patient anxiety, and minimize swelling during soft tissue treatment. Laser gum treatment makes it possible to: Stop bleeding of the gums immediately Seal deep periodontal pockets Avoid cutting the gums and post-surgical pain and discomfort Reduce loose teeth Regenerate ligament and bone tissue Laser Gum Treatment in Pasadena The warning signs of periodontal disease include: Bad breath or bad taste in the mouth Red, swollen, tender, or bleeding gums Loose or sensitive teeth Painful chewing Gums that have pulled away from the teeth Changes in the way the teeth fit together when you bite If you are experiencing these symptoms, it is important to see a dentist as soon as possible. You may be one of the many adults in the U.S. suffering from gum disease. Niloufar Molayem, D.D.S. and Dr. Sanchita Mehra can evaluate your condition, discuss laser gum treatment, and recommend the right treatment option for you. Implant-supported bridges replace missing teeth without support from (and damage to) the adjacent teeth. For missing or failing teeth, dental implants can provide the most effective, natural, and long-term teeth replacement solution. Our cosmetic dentists , Niloufar Molayem, D.D.S. and Dr. Sanchita Mehra offer multiple teeth replacement with dental implants in a Pasadena dental practice focused on conservative, integrated treatment. Practicing within the recommendations of the American Dental Association, Dr. Molayem and Dr. Mehra are dedicated to providing the highest quality of care in a safe and friendly environment. How Multiple Teeth Are Replaced with Implants When several teeth are missing or failing, implants can be used in one of two ways to replace them, depending on the number of lost teeth and their location. Each individual tooth can be replaced with a dental implant and a porcelain crown, or dental implants can be used to support a porcelain bridge. As an example, two implants may be placed to hold a three-tooth bridge, or three implants to hold a five-tooth bridge. Replacing multiple teeth with implants is a two-phase procedure with up to several months between the phases. In the first phase, the implant (a titanium post) is surgically placed in the jaw and left in place for 6 to 12 weeks while healing occurs and the implant bonds with the bone. Temporary teeth replacements can be worn over the implant sites during this healing period. In the second phase of the procedure, abutments (connector posts) are attached to the implants, and replacement teeth – crowns or bridges – are attached to the abutments, restoring your smile and your ability to chew and speak properly. Benefits of Dental Implants for Multiple Teeth Replacement Whether individual teeth are replaced with implants and crowns, or implants are used to support a porcelain bridge, dental implants have a number of advantages over other multiple teeth replacement options. Dental implants help prevent bone deterioration. Replacement teeth are stable and comfortable and function like natural teeth. Replacement teeth provide support to preserve facial structure. Normal biting and chewing capacity are restored. You can eat whatever you like, whenever you like – even corn on the cob or apples. Teeth adjacent to the missing teeth are preserved. Dental implants are a durable, long-term solution that can last for many years. Replacing multiple teeth with implants is a far superior solution to removable partial dentures or a multiple tooth-supported fixed bridge, both of which can compromise the surrounding teeth and lead to bone loss and periodontal disease . Implants provide a stable, long-term solution with significant oral health and cosmetic benefits and replacement teeth that fit, feel, and function like natural teeth. If you have several missing or failing teeth, schedule a consultation with Niloufar Molayem, D.D.S. or Dr. Sanchita Mehra to discuss multiple teeth replacement with dental implants. This procedure requires a high level of skill to perform, and Dr. Mehra is a leading authority on all forms of periodontal disease. If your gums have receded to the point in which the roots have been exposed, gum grafting may be part of your treatment plan. How Does Gum Grafting Work? The process of gum grafting has several steps. The first step involves a thorough deep cleaning of the teeth and gums, with tartar and bacteria removed from below the gum level. Your treatment involves a local anesthetic so that it is not painful. Small incisions are made in the site that create a tiny pocket into which the graft will be inserted. Tissue may have been harvested from inside your mouth, or medically processed human tissue will be used for the graft. The tissue is then attached to the existing gums with sutures (stitches). It takes about six weeks for the entire healing process. During the first week, the area will be protected by special surgical materials. Why Gum Grafting? Some patients will have gum grafting in a treatment plan. The common reasons to have this procedure include: Reducing tooth sensitivity Improved appearance Improved gum health Gum Grafting to Resolve Receding Gum Tissue As gum disease progresses, one unsightly symptom is receding gums . As the gums shrink back from the teeth, more and more of the tooth root is exposed, making the teeth look longer, and leading to sensitivity and pain. To restore your gums for oral health, to protect the roots of the teeth, and to create a more appealing appearance to your smile, gum grafting could be the right treatment. Only a full evaluation of your current condition will reveal what treatment plan will be best. We urge you to call our Pasadena offices to set an appointment if you have notice that your gums have begun to recede; the earlier the condition is treated, the better it is for you and your overall health. Holistic Periodontist: Dr. Mehra If you are suffering from any type of periodontal disease, you can trust Dr. Mehra to have every possible method available to help you, including the ability to perform gum grafting. She treats every patient with kindness, respect, and a gentle touch, and is committed to holistic dental techniques. The health of your gums and teeth impact your whole body; we can help you to maintain the health of your gums, or to resolve gum recession problems with the most advanced, effective, gum grafting techniques. Our dentists are committed to staying ahead of the curve, and offer the most advanced treatments, including laser dentistry. This is a modern, state-of-the-art method by which to perform many common dental procedures. Laser dentistry can be used to treat the following: Reshape gums Clean teeth Remove plaque To prevent infection in root canal treatments Teeth whitening Biopsies Oral surgeries Benefits of Laser Dentistry Many people dread the experience of going to the dentist, and the sound and pressure of the dental drill. Laser dentistry is virtually painless, and does not involve drilling or unpleasant pressure. As the laser beam is focused strictly upon the area to be treated, the procedure is typically far more comfortable, involves less pain, and leads to a faster recovery, as well as reducing the risk of complications. How Does Laser Dentistry Work? A laser is an intense, narrowly focused beam of light. The laser used in dental treatments is FDA approved, and was specifically developed to treat various dental and oral conditions. The laser is focused on the site that requires treatment, whether teeth or gums, and the tissue or tooth structure is reshaped or the decayed area removed. As with any dental treatment, it is the hands of the practitioner that make the difference in outcome. Our Pasadena dentists are highly-skilled and have impressive qualifications, including serving as educators for modern dentistry techniques. No Drilling, No Anesthetic, and Faster Recovery Times Laser dentistry to treat cavities is a recent development, and many dental offices do not offer this option. At Pasadena Smile Center, we offer this advanced dental technique to our patients. It has proved to be of great benefit for those who cannot tolerate drilling or want to avoid anesthetic, or have other health concerns. The first step is to have a comprehensive dental exam to determine what areas need to be treated, and by what means. We offer a wide range of dental treatments, and are proud to offer our patients laser dentistry as an option. Veneers can be used, alone or in combination with other procedures, to correct a wide range of cosmetic issues. They are commonly used to correct: Discolored teeth: Tooth discoloration can result from root canal treatment, excessive fluoride, tetracycline and other medications, or large resin fillings in the teeth. Gaps between the teeth: Dental veneers are an effective way to fill the gaps. Misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped teeth (for example, teeth that have bulges or craters) Chipped or broken teeth Teeth that are worn down Teeth that are too small or too large Dental veneers are not designed for restorative purposes to repair major structural problems. They are typically applied to basically healthy teeth with minor cosmetic defects. If you are interested in making small cosmetic changes to your smile, look into our veneers Pasadena patients can depend on. Procedure for Porcelain Veneers Porcelain veneers are usually applied in a series of two office visits. Little or no anesthesia is required for the procedure. In the first office visit, to prepare your teeth for the veneers, Dr. Molayem will lightly buff them and shape the surface, removing approximately one-half millimeter of the tooth enamel, to allow for the minor added thickness of the veneer. She will then take a mold or impression of your teeth to send to the dental laboratory, where your custom veneers will be fabricated. Together, you and Dr. Molayem will choose the right color shade to match your teeth. During your second office visit, Dr. Molayem will place the veneers on your teeth, checking them carefully for fit and color. At this point, the shade of the veneers can be adjusted if necessary with the shade of the cement used to bond them. Your teeth will be cleaned with a special liquid to aid the bonding process, and then the veneer will be applied with cement. A light beam will be used to harden and set the bond. What to Expect with Porcelain Veneers Because a small amount of tooth enamel is removed to prepare the teeth for the procedure, you can expect some sensitivity to heat and cold, which should subside within a few days after the veneers have been placed. Porcelain veneers are strong, but not indestructible. Avoid anything that puts undue stress on the porcelain, such as eating candy apples or cracking nuts with your teeth. Routine maintenance of porcelain veneers is simple – brush and floss as usual and visit your dentist in Pasadena regularly. Smile Gallery View Gallery What Are the Benefits of Porcelain Veneers? Dental veneers provide a conservative approach to cosmetic dental treatment. An excellent alternative to crowns in many situations, veneers do not require extensive shaping before the procedure, which can be performed with little or no anesthetic. Porcelain veneers have a number of advantages for patients seeking to improve the appearance of their smile: They produce beautiful, natural looking results. Porcelain color can be selected to make dark teeth appear whiter. Porcelain veneers resist staining. Gum tissue tends to tolerate porcelain well. Veneers provide a less aggressive cosmetic alternative to crowns. Dental veneers FAQs: Can veneers stain over time? Porcelain veneers are more resistant to staining than natural teeth. However, excessive consumption of coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco can cause minor discoloration over time. Proper oral hygiene and regular dental cleanings help maintain their brightness. Will my speech be affected after getting veneers? Some patients may experience a slight adjustment period while speaking, especially if multiple veneers are placed. However, most people quickly adapt, and any initial differences in pronunciation typically disappear within a few days to a couple of weeks. Do veneers need to be replaced eventually? Yes, veneers are durable but not permanent. They typically last 10–15 years or longer with proper care. Over time, they may need to be replaced due to normal wear, chipping, or gum recession. Regular dental visits help monitor their condition. Do veneers feel different from natural teeth? For some of the most natural-looking results, visit Pasadena Smile Center today! How does a crown work? A crown is a dental restoration method used to completely cap a damaged tooth that does not have enough remaining structure to hold a filling. In addition to strengthening the tooth, capping it with a crown can improve its shape, alignment, and appearance. Your dental crowns in Pasadena can also be placed on top of an implant to form a tooth-like shape and structure that functions exactly like a natural tooth. Smile Gallery View Gallery Chewing can be improved when a tooth is reshaped with a crown to more efficiently match opposing teeth. Porcelain crowns or ceramic crowns can be matched to the color of the teeth for a natural, aesthetically pleasing appearance. Modern ceramic processes produce color and translucency more natural looking now than ever before. Why Your Dentist May Recommend a Crown Dr. Molayem may recommend tooth restoration with a crown for of a number of reasons, both structural and cosmetic. She may place a crown to: Restore a cracked or fractured tooth Protect a weak tooth from fracturing Replace a large filling Cover a dental implant Cover a tooth with a root canal Attach a bridge Cover a tooth that is discolored or poorly shaped Improve the appearance of your smile Types of Dental Crowns There are several types of crowns depending on your needs. Your dental crowns in Pasadena can made of porcelain, ceramic, or other materials. Each type of crown has its own pros and cons. Cosmetic dental crowns are typically porcelain or ceramic. Tooth-colored porcelain crowns are the most popular, as they are highly durable and can be made to match the shape, size and color of your natural teeth, for a beautiful, long-lasting smile. Ceramic Porcelain Resin Stainless Steel Crown Placement Procedure A crown placement procedure usually requires two appointments. Before the crown can be created in the dental laboratory, the tooth must be reduced in size so the cap (crown) can fit over it properly. In your first appointment, while the tooth is numb, Dr. Molayem will prepare it by removing decay and shaping the surface of the tooth to properly fit a crown. Then, she will take several accurate impressions to provide an exact mold for the crown, and to create temporary crown that will stay on your tooth for approximately two weeks until the new crown has been fabricated in the dental lab. At this time, she will also carefully match the exact shade of your porcelain crown to your existing teeth. Using the impression made by Dr. Molayem, the dental laboratory will make your crown according to her specifications. When the new crown is ready, you have your second appointment, at which time the temporary crown is removed, the tooth is cleaned, and the new crown is cemented in place. Dr. Molayem places the crown carefully, to ensure accurate spacing and a comfortable, correct bite. Crown/Veneer FAQs: How do I know if I need a crown or just a filling? A dental filling is typically used for small to moderate cavities or minor tooth damage. If a tooth has extensive decay, a large fracture, or has undergone root canal treatment, a crown is usually recommended. Crowns provide full coverage and structural reinforcement to protect the tooth. Your dentist will assess the condition of your tooth and recommend the best option for you. Can a dental crown be replaced if it gets damaged? Yes, dental crowns can be replaced if they crack, chip, or become loose. In some cases, minor damage can be repaired, but if the structural integrity of the crown is compromised, a full replacement is necessary. Regular dental check-ups help detect any wear or damage early, ensuring your crown continues to function properly. Do crowns require special care compared to natural teeth? Dental crowns do not require extensive special care, but maintaining good oral hygiene is essential. Brush and floss daily to keep the area around the crown clean, and avoid habits such as chewing on ice or hard objects to prevent damage. What happens if my crown falls off? If your crown falls off, keep it safe and contact your dentist immediately. Avoid chewing on the exposed tooth, as it may be sensitive or at risk of further damage. Your dentist may be able to reattach the existing crown if it is in good condition, or they may need to create a new one. Temporary crowns or protective coverings may be used while waiting for a replacement. Are temporary crowns necessary, and how long do they last? Yes, temporary crowns are necessary while waiting for a permanent crown to be fabricated. They protect the tooth from sensitivity and damage. Temporary crowns usually last between one to three weeks, depending on the type of crown being made. It’s important to avoid sticky or hard foods during this time to prevent dislodging the temporary crown. Dental Crowns in Pasadena Niloufar Molayem, D.D.S. is a Doctor of Dental Surgery who takes an integrated, holistic approach to general and cosmetic dentistry. They can be used to repair teeth that are cracked or fractured but not damaged to the degree that a crown is needed, or for teeth with mild to moderate decay. An ideal candidate for an inlay or onlay is a tooth with too much decay or damage to be successfully treated with a filling, but with enough healthy tooth structure remaining. Niloufar Molayem, D.D.S. serves Pasadena and the surrounding area, providing general and cosmetic dentistry services, including restorations with inlays and onlays. In a practice geared toward holistic, conservative treatment, you can have confidence that Dr. Molayem will use the least aggressive methods possible in restoring your smile, while ensuring your well-being as a whole patient. What Are Inlays and Onlays? Dental inlays and onlays are custom-made inserts that fit perfectly inside a prepared tooth. They can be made of gold, composite materials, or porcelain. Inlays and onlays are made in a dental laboratory and cemented to the tooth structure by your dentist. The inlay or onlay is securely bonded to the tooth to stabilize the surrounding structure and to prevent further decay. Tooth-colored porcelain inlays and onlays, carefully matched to your tooth color, look completely natural in place. Like crowns , inlays and onlays require two dental appointments – the first to remove decay and damage, take impressions of the tooth, and place a temporary restoration; and the second to remove the temporary restoration, ensure the fit of the inlay or onlay, and carefully and precisely cement it in place. What Is the Difference between Inlays and Onlays? Inlays and onlays are the same type of restoration, but used to cover different parts of the tooth. A dental inlay is used to cover the space at the center of the tooth’s surface, between the cusps (top edges of the tooth). A dental onlay serves the same purpose as an inlay, but more extensively, covering one or more cusps, and in some cases, the entire biting surface of the tooth. Dental onlays are sometimes called partial crowns because of their extensive coverage. Benefits of Inlays and Onlays A more conservative treatment, inlays and onlays preserve more of the natural tooth than a crown. This type of restoration has several benefits: Durability: Inlays and onlays are made of durable, hard-wearing materials that can last up to 30 years. Tooth strength: Unlike traditional metal fillings, which actually reduce the strength of teeth, inlays and onlays can help strengthen them by up to 75%. Tooth life: An inlay or onlay can help prevent the need for additional dental treatment in the future and help prolong the life of the tooth. Inlays & Onlays in Pasadena Niloufar Molayem, D.D.S. provides high quality dental services, practicing with an integrated, conservative approach. As the gums recede, the tooth roots are revealed. The roots of the teeth are very susceptible to decay, and if the gums are receding, it is critical that the condition is treated rapidly. As the gums recede gradually, it may only be noticed by a patient when the teeth become sensitive or begin to look longer than before. A notch can be felt at the gum line. Receding gums are a symptom of periodontal disease that can be treated and resolved. Step One: Evaluating Your Condition To determine the most effective treatment for receding gums, a full examination of your gums and teeth will be performed, including X-Rays and hands-on evaluation. As the gums recede, the condition worsens, as pockets are formed that can allow bacteria to flourish. Our team of professionals will evaluate your condition and create a treatment plan to help restore your gums and teeth to a healthier state. Step Two: Your Treatment Plan The treatment you need for receding gums can vary, based upon the how far the gum disease has progressed. Every person has a unique condition, and the treatment plan will be developed to address all of the factors for the individual. Having healthy gums is very important, as gum disease is linked to more serious health conditions, including stroke, heart disease, and others. Our friendly, compassionate staff will explain every detail of your treatment plan to you so you understand what will occur. We are gentle, and focus on providing pain-free dental care. Step Three: Treating Gum Recession Our treatments can halt the progression of receding gums. The treatments needed could include: Root planing or root scaling : root planing, also called root scaling or deep cleaning, may be necessary to halt the progression of gum recession. The plaque, tartar, and debris that has collected below the surface of the gums is removed with a special procedure. Pocket irrigation: Also called oral irrigation, this can prevent the advancement of gum recession by using water to blast out the plaque, particles of food, and the debris that collects between the teeth. Pocket irrigation helps to keep the gum tissue healthy and strong, while reducing issues such as bad breath. Pocket reduction surgery: If your gums have receded to the point in which pockets have formed around the teeth, it poses a health risk to mouth, gums, and teeth, as well as your general health. Pocket reduction surgery cleans out the collection of bacteria, after folding back the gum tissue, so it can reattach to the teeth and be restored to a healthier (and more attractive) position. Soft tissue grafting: Some patients may require soft tissue grafting to restore lost gum tissue. Tissue can be harvested from the inside of your mouth and then placed and stitched over the area of your gums that receded. Regenerative procedures: The regeneration of gum tissue is typically performed through gum grafting. This procedure can resolve the unpleasant appearance of the gums, particularly if discolored or appearing “toothy.” Contact us today and set up a consultation for arguably the best gum recession treatment Pasadena has to offer. At her holistic dental practice in Pasadena , Dr. Molayem has found nitrous oxide sedation to withstand the test of time as a safe and efficacious method, reducing barriers to care for patients who are fearful, phobic, or have special needs. What Is Sedation Dentistry? Despite the well-established importance of oral health, a large percentage of the population avoids dental treatment due to fear and anxiety. In sedation dentistry , sedatives are used to induce a relaxed, easy, calm state of mind during treatment. Tranquilizers, depressants, anti-anxiety medications, or nitrous oxide can be used in sedation. Dr. Molayem offers a form of conscious inhalation sedation with nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to induce a state of relaxation. A local anesthetic is administered in combination with the nitrous oxide to ensure the patient’s comfort. This makes it possible for our patients to receive high quality, holistic dental care with less fear, anxiety, or pain. Levels of Dental Sedation As patients have different levels of dental anxiety, there are different levels of sedation dentistry to treat it: Light sedation: Minimal sedation leaves the patient relaxed, but still awake, alert, and able to respond as needed. Moderate sedation: The patient remains conscious but probably won’t remember much of the dental procedure. Although able to communicate, the patient may feel groggy and slur his or her words. Some patients fall asleep, although they can be woken easily. Deep sedation: Not in the category of conscious sedation, deep sedation leaves the patient semi-conscious or unconscious during the procedure. Recovery time is longer with deep sedation. The patient does not regain consciousness until the drug is reversed or wears off. What Is Conscious Sedation? Conscious sedation dentistry allows the patient to enter a state of relaxation yet remain awake for the procedure. Although feeling no pain, the patient is still able to respond to questions and instructions from the doctor during the dental treatment. While administering a local anesthetic can help ensure the patient’s physical comfort, it is not always sufficient to reduce fear and anxiety. Conscious sedation is used to treat dental anxiety, so you can relax while your Pasadena sedation dentist works on your teeth. Types of Conscious Sedation A sedation dentist can administer conscious sedation in several different ways: Inhalation sedation: This is done with nitrous oxide, administered through a mask placed over the patient’s nose. Laughing gas (nitrous oxide) is inhaled through the nose, expelled through the mouth, and wears off almost immediately after the procedure, with minimal side effects, for a quick recovery. Oral sedation: Medication taken orally approximately one hour before the dental procedure produces a light to moderate sedation effect. The patient is awake and able to respond but may feel drowsy during treatment. Recovery is longer than with inhalation sedation. Side effects are rare but may include nausea and vomiting. IV sedation: Medications delivered intravenously have a much faster effect than medications taken orally. This method allows the doctor to adjust the level of sedation during the procedure. IV sedation is considered moderate. A notable benefit of a Pasadena sedation dentistry is that patients may feel their dental procedure took only minutes to perform, when it may have taken hours. Consequently, complex treatments such as extensive rebuilding or smile makeovers can be performed in fewer visits. In the practice of Niloufar Molayem, D.D.S., we offer sedation dentistry in Pasadena to help our patients receive the quality dental care they need. The material bonds to the tooth, which is why the procedure is called bonding. Unlike veneers, which are fabricated in a dental laboratory, bonding can be performed in a single visit. Bonding is among the easiest, least expensive, and quickest cosmetic dental procedures. Composite resin can be shaped and polished to match the surrounding teeth for beautiful, natural-looking results. See Pasadena cosmetic dentist , Niloufar Molayem, D.D.S. to find out how bonding can improve your smile. Dental Bonding Uses Bonding can be used to correct a range of cosmetic and oral health issues. Its uses include: Repairing decayed teeth (filling cavities) Repairing chipped or cracked teeth Closing spaces between the teeth Improving the appearance of discolored teeth Making the teeth appear longer Changing the shape of the teeth Protecting the portion of a tooth’s roots exposed by receding gums Smile Gallery View Gallery How Dental Bonding Is Performed No preparation is required for dental bonding, and unless it is performed to fill a decayed tooth, anesthesia is not usually needed. Dr. Molayem will carefully match a composite resin to the color of your teeth. She will slightly roughen the surface of the tooth and coat it lightly with a liquid to help the bonding material adhere. Next she will apply the tooth-colored resin, mold it, and smooth it into the proper shape, then harden the material with a laser or ultraviolet light. Once the bonding material is hardened, Dr. Molayem will trim and shape it further and polish the material until the sheen matches the rest of the tooth. The entire bonding procedure takes approximately 30 minutes to an hour. Dental Bonding Pros and Cons Bonding has many cosmetic uses, and it can also be used as an alternative to amalgam fillings and to protect the exposed roots of a tooth. It is one of the least expensive cosmetic dentistry procedures. Unless multiple teeth are being treated, it can usually be performed in one short office visit. It requires little or no tooth enamel removal, and most bonding procedures can be performed without anesthesia. The down side is that the materials used in bonding are not as strong as your natural teeth and can be chipped by activities such as biting the fingernails. Bonding is not as strong as crowns , veneers , or fillings , and not as stain resistant as crowns. After a few years, it will probably need to be repaired. Dental Bonding in Pasadena Bonding is a fast, effective, inexpensive restoration procedure to treat a range of cosmetic dental issues. It can also be used as a cosmetic alternative to amalgam fillings for repairing teeth with decay. Although bonding lacks the strength of a crown or veneer, it may be ideal for certain cosmetic improvements. Niloufar Molayem, D.D.S. serves Pasadena and the surrounding area, performing integrated, conservative general and cosmetic dentistry procedures. After a consultation in our office with Dr. Molayem, she can advise you about whether bonding will be a recommended restorative procedure to enhance your smile.
