One of the most frequent services we offer is the brake service and repair. Our nationally ASE certified technicians can perform brake inspections, repairs, as well as the regular brake maintenance. Brake caliper replacement is one of the services we offer.  When you press the brake pedal, the hydraulic system activates, and presses the brake pads against the rotors. The brake calipers house the brake pads – they fit like clamps around the rotor, and the brake pads are pressed against the rotors as you brake. When brake calipers malfunction it could cause uneven braking, which in rainy weather can results in vehicle sliding out of control. On dry roads you will feel the vehicle pulling to one side. This is typically a result of a binding caliper – a piston does not move smoothly out of the bore, and applies different amount of pressure than the other ones.  Another caliper problem we see is the caliper leaking brake fluid. As the brake fluid level goes down, you will likely see brake warning light illuminated on your dashboard.  At Pat’s Garage, when we inspect the brakes, we inspect all components of the brake system, check brake fluid level, thickness of the brake pads and rotors, and we also check that calipers are functioning as designed. If we find problems with the brake system, we will let you know what needs to be done to remedy the problem. Pat’s Garage offers full-service catalytic converter replacement in San Francisco. There are typically two reasons why we need to replace a catalytic converter - either the old one stopped performing correctly, or the catalytic converter has been stolen. Yes, catalytic converter theft has become a popular past time for thieves. San Francisco Prius Gen 2 owners and Honda Element owners seem to be especially at risk.  What is a Catalytic Converter? The catalytic converter is a component of your vehicle that cleans up engine emissions. It burns up particles in the exhaust gases. The reason we need a catalytic converter is that when gasoline burns up in the cylinders, it does not burn up completely. Unburned particles travel with the exhaust gases and are expelled from the car. In order to prevent these particles from getting into the atmosphere, and our lungs, catalytic converters were invented.  Catalytic converters are made of precious metals that can withstand very high temperatures - catalytic converter can heat up to 1200  degrees °F. Any unburned particles that travel through the catalytic converter get fully burned up, resulting in car exhaust that is mostly carbon dioxide and water vapor.  Symptoms of Catalytic Converter failure When the catalytic converter fails, there are usually a few symptoms that anyone can recognize as needing professional attention: a) Exhaust gases may have an unpleasant odor, due to unburned hydrocarbons.  b) Car engine may be running rough  c) Engine may misfire  d) Check engine light will be illuminated  e) Backfiring or rough running f) Loss of power Many of these symptoms may be due to problems other than failing catalytic converter, so professional diagnosis at an auto repair shop is a necessity.  Catalytic Converter Replacement Process First thing we will need to know is your vehicle’s VIN number. California has very stringent laws concerning catalytic converters, so we need to get the VIN number to source correct (legal) catalytic converter.  Once we have the right catalytic converter in stock, we get your car up on the lift, and the old catalytic converter is removed. If the catalytic converter was stolen, there is nothing to remove, but the thieves likely damaged the vehicle in the process. This will increase the time and cost of repairs.  Once the new catalytic converter is installed, we start the engine to check for exhaust leaks or problems with the new catalytic converter.  Finally, we take your car for a road test to verify that all systems are working correctly.  So if you suspect that your vehicle’s catalytic converter needs to be replaced, bring your vehicle to Pat’s Garage. We offer full range of brake repairs, including rotor replacement.  Rotors are attached to wheels, when you press the brake pedal, brake pads press against them, causing friction that slows down, and eventually stops the car.  Over time, friction causes brakes to wear down – not just the brake pads, but rotors as well. When the rotors reach the stage of being worn down or warped, we will recommend rotor replacement. If your vehicle’s brake pads are worn down “to the metal” they can cause rotor damage that will also require rotor replacement.  Why don’t we simply resurface rotors? Older drivers surely remember days when warped rotors were simply resurfaced, not replaced. Those days are gone. Federal Government mandated fleet mileage improvements – this meant that car manufacturers scrambled to find ways to shed pounds from the vehicles in order to improve mileage – as a result, rotors were thinned down, and are not as thick as they used to be.  Resurfacing thinner rotors is not a good idea. Add to this Bay Area’s high labor cost – you might as well get brand new rotors, and that’s what we recommend.  How do you know that brake rotors need to be replaced? The signs that brake rotors need to be inspected, and likely need to be replaced are:  Blue discoloration of rotor surface. Vibration or pulsation when applying brakes. Grooves or hot spots in rotors. What is involved in rotor replacement? Typically rotors are replaced at the same time as brake pads. When you come for brake service we will measure brake pads and rotors, and inspect the rotors. If they need to be replaced, we will let you know.  Rotors are replaced in pairs – front or back.  At times you will need to replace both front and back rotors, and both front and back brake pads. But that rarely happens, since front rotors and brake pads wear out much faster, so they tend to be replaced more frequently.  When we replace rotors, we also check other brake system components, to make sure that they are in proper working condition.  This includes checking calipers, lubricating brake system components, checking condition of the brake fluid, and topping it off if necessary. We also take your vehicle for a test drive to make sure that the brakes work as they should.  Brakes are vital to the safe vehicle operation – if you have any concerns about your vehicle’s brakes, bring it to Pat’s Garage for a brake inspection. Some owners of Sonatas made in 2015 reported check engine light issues, as well as cam shaft sensor failures, while the 2011 Sonata can suffer from  fuel injection system failures and other engine issues.
