Last-Minute Treatment Plan Changes: They changed the filling treatment plan — including switching which teeth would be filled — just one day before the appointment. No proper explanation was provided, and the total cost increased without justification. Aggressive Upselling: I was constantly pushed to agree to additional procedures like wisdom tooth extraction, deep cleaning, and multiple follow-up visits. Dr. Heidi Lee received her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree, with distinction, from the University of Western Ontario in Canada in 2007. After graduation from dental school, Dr. Lee enriched her clinical skills and dental expertise by attending a one-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry program at the University of the Pacific. Her quality of care, professionalism towards patients, and enthusiasm towards continuing education earned her the Resident of the Year Award. After completing her residency at the University of the Pacific in 2008, she was invited to stay on staff as a clinical faculty member, providing advice in treatment planning and guidance in complex restorative cases. Since the completion of her residency training, Dr. Lee has been practicing in the Bay Area. She is an active member of the Academy of General Dentistry, the American Dental Association, the California Dental Association, and the Santa Clara County Dental Association. Symptoms and Causes of Gum Disease Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a common oral health condition that affects many people worldwide. It occurs when the gums become infected due to bacteria buildup in the mouth. If left untreated, gum disease can lead to serious consequences such as tooth loss and even affect your overall health. The symptoms of gum disease may vary from person to person but are usually characterized by red, swollen, and tender gums. You may also experience bleeding while brushing or flossing your teeth. Bad breath or a persistent bad taste in your mouth can also be indications of gum disease. Several factors contribute to the development of gum disease. Poor oral hygiene plays a significant role as it allows plaque to accumulate on the teeth and eventually harden into tartar. Smoking is another major risk factor for gum disease as it weakens the immune system's ability to fight off infections. This typically involves a deep cleaning known as scaling and root planing. During this procedure, the dentist removes plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline. Advance Staff Training: Each member of our team has completed a full week of awareness and prevention programs to enhance their knowledge and preparedness. Pre-Screening Patient and Staff We screen all patients and team members daily to be sure no one is experiencing symptoms such as fever and cough. Social Distancing in Place We ask that you come alone to your appointment. Unless it is essential, no companions will be allowed back into the treatment rooms. We are trying to limit the number of people in the office at once. Social distancing will be much simpler, with fewer people to separate. Virtual Check-In When you arrive for your appointment, we ask that you complete the set of health-related questionnaires on our website before you walk in. Once you come in the door, we will take your temperature and ask you to use hand sanitizers. Anti-Microbial Rinses Before we begin your appointment, we will provide an antiseptic mouth rinse for you to use as a pretreatment rinse Personal Protection Equipment Our clinical team wears extra personal protection equipment such as face shields, gowns, head covering, shoe covering, and masks to provide barriers against the smallest of germs to protect both you and the treatment team. Medical Grade Air Purification Systems We have installed medical-grade air purification equipped with HEPA filters and UV lights that can effectively capture 99.9% of particulates and aerosol, including bacteria, fungus, and viruses such as Influenza, Coronaviruses, and others. Intra Oral Suction We use an intra-oral barrier with built-in suction to remove aerosols and droplets generated by drilling and cleaning procedures. This device, known as a DryShield, also provides a cushion for you to bite on instead of holding your mouth open. Most patients find this more comfortable to rest the jaw during the procedure. Extra Oral Suction In addition to Intra-oral suction, we added additional extraoral suction equipment placed next to the patient mouth to capture any remaining aerosol particles. This machine has a ULPA filter that captures particles of 0.12microns, which is also the size of the coronavirus. Fogging Devices We use fogging devices to spray non-toxic, electrolyte saltwater solutions further to cleanse the air in treatment rooms after each procedure. Prioritizing Cleanliness Before you enter the examining room, all surfaces, such as the dental chair, dental light, drawer handles, and countertops will have been cleaned and disinfected thoroughly with medical-grade disinfectants that kill 99.9% of all harmful bacteria and viruses. Non-disposable items such as dental tools and instruments are cleaned and sterilized between patients using hospital-grade sterilization equipment.
