By 1993, Pets In Need had rescued and found new, loving homes for 10,263 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens. 2007 The decision was made by the Pets In Need board to build a new shelter: The shelter was made more animal-friendly and safer for animals awaiting a home. Dogs were placed in open apartments, did not face one another, had no bars to look through, and noise was reduced, which led to improved behavior. Cats were housed in rooms where they could stretch, play with toys, and climb; cats that preferred to be alone were placed in well-lighted, spacious, and clean cat condos. New additions included an outdoor terrace for quarantined dogs and a state-of-the-art medical area with rooms for adoptable dogs and cats in studios. 2010 The new Pets In Need animal rescue shelter re-opened in Redwood City, built to Silver LEED certification specifications. 2012 Pets In Need began offering free spaying/neutering services at the Redwood City facility and through a mobile surgical van that was purchased through gifts from the PIN board and others. 2015 Pets In Need celebrated 50 years of service to the Northern California area. 2019 Pets In Need began operating the Palo Alto Animal Shelter where we provide animal care services for residents of Palo Alto, Los Altos and Los Altos Hills and care for rescued animals from throughout California. This partnership is a national model for the humane treatment of animals in public shelters. 2025 Pets In Need celebrated our 60th anniversary of saving and serving animals in the Bay Area and beyond. We looked back with gratitude and pride on all that our leaders accomplished for animals and their people over the past six decades. We celebrated our successes in that moment, including an astonishing 97% save rate, a model public-private partnership with the City of Palo Alto, and significant growth in community support through our pet pantry and three medical clinics serving animals in families. We also envisioned a bright future, anticipating new opportunities for innovative programming and partnerships that ensured pets were safe, healthy, and loved. Our goal is to keep pets in their loving homes whenever possible. Below are some alternative options that you can consider before surrendering your pet. Pet Behavior Modification Many times, pets are surrendered to animal shelters due to undesirable behaviors that can be managed in their current household. Below are some common issues that pets may face in their home and resources to help you work on these issues. Aggression Any animal demonstrating aggressive behaviors including snapping, snarling, or biting should meet with a professional to implement a training plan. We recommend reputable organizations that ensure some level of certification or adherence to science-based training methods. These include: Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CPDT-KA, CBCC-KA), International Association of Animal Behaviorist Consultants (ACDBC, CDBC), Pet Professional Guild, Academy for Dog Trainers (CTC), or Karen Pryor Academy (KPA-CTP). A few of the Bay Area trainers we recommend are: Family Dog Training Hope for Canines General Manners Most dogs can benefit from general training classes to build a good foundation for future training. These classes can help you resolve common issues like leash reactivity, jumping up, leash manners, and general obedience. Some training facilities we recommend are: Zoom Room Belmont In-Home Manners Some organizations provide free resources for pet owners who are struggling with certain behavioral issues in the household. The topics covered include, but are not limited to, housetraining, socialization, destructive chewing, separation anxiety, excessive barking, resource guarding, and desensitization. Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA Lifestyle Changes Lifestyle changes can happen quickly and unexpectedly. Below are some options for adjustments pet owners can make in the home to acclimate their pets to these changes. Welcoming a New Family Member Welcoming a new family member into the home is exciting but can also be a lot of change for your pet. We recommend looking at the resources below on how to acclimate pets to the new arrival(s). It takes time, but most pets and children can live together with supervision and management. Dog and Babies Cats and Babies Pet Allergies When you or someone in your household develops or has pet allergies, solutions may be available through your doctor. Some people may be eligible for allergy shots that make living with a four-legged family member a possibility. We recommend reaching out to your primary care physician to see if that is an option for you. Financial Constraints If you have fallen on hard times or need help to keep your pet, we offer pet care assistance to those who qualify. We offer assistance with veterinary care and pet food . Finding Pet Friendly Housing If you are looking into pet-friendly housing, we recommend resources like aparmentguide.com or apartments.com . Alternatively, you can reach out to your current landlord to see if an exception can be made for your pet(s). When looking for a rental, print a pet resume for your beloved family member. It is helpful to have a previous landlord or veterinarian that can vouch for your well-behaved pet. Click here to see how you can create a resume for your pet. Spending More Time Away from Home If you are not home as often anymore, consider looking into dog boarding, doggy daycare, or dog walkers. It is important to read through the reviews and ensure that the place or person is a good fit for your pet and their needs. Rehoming options If you have tried the resources above and are still unable to keep your pet, we recommend looking into these rehoming options before going to your public shelter. Friends or Family We recommend rehoming your pet to friends or family when possible. By reaching out to loved ones or posting on your personal social media or NextDoor , you may find someone in your network who can take your pet. If it is not possible, please take a look at the resources below. Here is some important information you should know before placing your dog into a new home. Your Community Reaching out to members of your community on rehoming websites is a great option for those looking to rehome. Below are some options: Home to Home Adopt-a-pet Breed-Specific Rescues Another option for rehoming your pet is through breed-specific rescues. Check out this website for a full list of breed-specific and local rescues. These rescues will not only be familiar with breed temperament, but will also have the network to find your pet a loving home. California Chihuahua Rescue Pit bull-type breeds Surrendering a Pet Pets In Need accepts owner surrenders from residents of Palo Alto, Los Altos, and Los Altos Hills. If you are a resident of one of these cities, please submit a surrender request by clicking here . Please be prepared to provide proof of residency and to share your pet’s health, behavior, and history. If you are a resident of any other city, please contact your local shelter . Licensed veterinarians are available to evaluate your pet’s condition and determine whether urgent medical care is needed. If a trip to an emergency clinic isn’t necessary, you’ll receive detailed at-home care instructions to monitor and support your pet. Should immediate attention be required, VetTriage will help guide you to the nearest 24-hour emergency veterinary hospital. Note: If your pet is struggling to breathe, actively seizing, has collapsed, or is facing a life threatening emergency, go straight to the nearest 24-hour emergency veterinary hospital. Do not delay care to set up a telehealth visit. Step 1 Start by filling out the registration form. If you’ve used the service before, simply log in with your email address. Once you click Continue, you’ll be taken to a secure payment portal. Step 2 In the payment portal, select Purchase Session. You’ll be able to choose from several payment methods, including credit card, debit card, or PayPal. Each session has a flat fee of $50, regardless of how long it lasts. Step 3 Once your payment is complete, click Request Session to begin a live video consultation with a licensed veterinarian. They’ll evaluate your pet’s condition and, if it’s an emergency, help direct you to the nearest veterinary ER or available on-call vet. Over the years, she’s worked in many areas of veterinary medicine, including private practice, integrative and palliative care, community medicine with a focus on high-quality, high-volume spay and neuter, and shelter medicine. Dr. Cataldo is passionate about making veterinary care accessible to everyone and creating visits that are as comfortable and stress-free as possible for both pets and their people. She’s excited to meet you and your pet and looks forward to helping you both feel at ease and cared for. Dr. Emily Scott Dr. Emily Scott graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2014. She moved to the Bay Area for her small animal rotating internship and spent a few years working in an emergency room and general practice clinic before finding her way into the world of shelter medicine. Working in the shelter underscored the importance of keeping already owned pets healthy, happy and in their homes and Dr. Scott is excited to work towards this goal at the Community Veterinary Clinic! Rehomed pets from Adopt-a-pet We’ve partnered with Adopt-A-Pet to feature more animals in your area looking for new homes. See available animals on Rehome. REHOME PALO ALTO REHOME REDWOOD CITY Frequently Asked Questions How long does the adoption process take? We do same-day adoptions for available animals. Some animals are only eligible for pre-adoption while they wait for medical clearance, but the time until adoption is typically under one week. Can I adopt if I rent my home? Yes! We recommend checking your lease for guidelines first, but we do not require any proof. What if the adoption doesn't work out? We understand that it isn’t always the right fit. If you can no longer keep the pet you adopted, we ask that you first try to rehome them through your own networks. If you aren’t able to, you can send in a surrender request here: Pet Surrender Do you offer rehoming partnerships? We don’t directly partner with owners needing to rehome pets, but we recommend owners use Rehome by Adopt-a-Pet. What supplies do adopted pets come with? All adopted pets go home with a bag of the food they’re currently eating. We also have available for purchase litter boxes, litter, cardboard cat carriers, dog leashes, and seat-belt leashes. Pets In Need has shelters in Redwood City and Palo Alto. We have owned and operated our Redwood City shelter since 1993, and in 2019 we began operating the Palo Alto Animal Shelter in partnership with the City of Palo Alto.
