Slide title Write your caption here Button Slide title Write your caption here Button The Arts district is downtown, but more local and easier on parking.   We are East of Boyle Heights (over the bridge) with a Mariachi band in the city square, a 10 minute walk north to Union Station (as a main artery for transportation by train or bus) just past great ramen and sushi in Little Tokyo, and to our West is the official downtown with breweries, coffee shops, museums and shopping.   Our group housing model here is made up of artists - musicians, videographers, marketers, gym buffs, and folks that cannot afford any other place on the brink of homelessness. We have always been a community of have and have nots. Travelers have disposable income and long termers do not. Downtown is a concrete jungle and its style is grunge, so our location uses upcycled wood palettes and a kitchen entirely made out of OSB. Globalization is inevitable as the earth increases population, inter-racial offspring ease border lines, media portrays more stories of non-traditional lifestyles, and the corporate noose around the 9-5 employee is loosened. Transportation is becoming so affordable that all of the parking/insurance/liability of owning a car don’t make it worth it for a non-married individual in urban cities. Technological advancements offer us opportunities to be a one-woman machine or one-man band, as much as online education does. The world is changing as fast as the climate. Housing should too. The white picket fence is stagnant. Millennials and all generations thereafter will spend more on travel and record it all on social media, so their friends share, comment and dream of the same opportunities. Traditional TV shows portrayed the family life, but the internet is all about the high life. The future is access, not ownership. Slide title Write your caption here Button Some celebrities stopped by…  Button Button Button TELL US ABOUT YOUR CAREER BACKGROUND – WHEN DID YOU FIRST BECOME AN ENTREPRENEUR? The first opportunity to become an entrepreneur was my family’s immigration to the US in 1990 – I was 5   The first time I dabbled in entrepreneurship (without knowing the term) was selling my parent’s belongings in the front yard of our Brooklyn apartment at age 7 – when my mom got home from work she was upset but instead of scolding, she took me to Costco and bought me a giant box of snickers that I started selling for $1 each at the cafeteria of PS 206. I got in trouble with the cafeteria staff after a couple of weeks. My mom picked me up from the principal’s office and yelled at the school for making me feel like I was doing something wrong. It felt amazing to have my mom on my side..   In middle school I took my dad’s shovels, gathered the young neighborhood kids and went door to door to sell our snow shoveling service. The kids were much younger than me, so they got tired quick and walked home. I was the last person finishing the job. The homeowner came out and try to pay me to finish but I refused and kept shoveling. I could not rally the neighbors again so I would go out and do it myself. I told myself that I made those driveways look so clear for people and I loved having a goal I could see and achieve with my own two hands.   In high school, I wanted to go look at California colleges, so I threw a party while my parents were visiting family in Pennsylvania. I charged $10 per head and stood at my gate all night making sure the funds were collected properly and no one got in free. I made $700. When the police came to break up the party, I let them right in (obviously) and fully cooperated. I never wanted the shin dig to go long anyway. My parents were not upset because I never let anyone into the house, they appreciated the fundraising effort, and I did not get into legal trouble.   In LA, when the going got tough I went to Smart & Final to buy a bunch of hot dogs and buns to sell outside of a club. My neighbor had a grill on wheels that I could use. A girls gotta do what a girls gotta do!  TELL US HOW DID THE IDEA OF PODSHARE CAME ABOUT? Like many, after the 2009 recession hit, I was faced with some difficult financial burdens. Having just graduated from college and working in the gig economy, my work was unsteady which made it difficult to provide proof of income.   I wanted a home that people like me could reset in, but also was a space for constant discovery and diversity. I thought about the future of housing and how mobile it will become with the rise of the freelance economy and cheaper transportation costs. If traveling was more affordable, then would mobile housing may go from trend to industry and operate like a gym membership.   I grew up watching MTV’s Real World and the way every season had a new cast and new location is the way I wanted to live and share housing.   I was able to convince one landlord to rent me a ground floor unit in his Hollywood Live/work building and I invested my life savings into building an MVP location with 10 pods. I flew my dad out from NJ and together we went to Home Depot and spent 3 months constructing the first PodShare.   Funny enough, when I was little my mother would refuse to let me sleep over at friends houses. It is ironic that I developed a slumber party business. However, with quiet hours at 10 pm, I guess I’m still listening to mom’s sage advice that nothing good ever happens after midnight. WHO IS IT MEANT FOR AND HOW DOES IT WORK? PodShare allows flexible housing options for people who: cannot afford the high cost of short or long term housing have arrived to a new city without a friend’s couch to crash on are in town for school or work or pilot season and cannot afford corporate housing are paycheck to paycheck and can only afford a little rent a time jobless, bad credit, recently divorced, lonely rather spend on experiences than a solitary hotel when traveling came with an allotted sum that they need to “buy time” with while apartment and job hunting don’t want to commit to an apartment or roommate off the internet We identify members as one of 3 categories: Traveler, Transitioner, Temp WHO MAKES AN IDEAL PODESTRIAN? The ideal Podestrian is courteous, empathetic, open minded, clean, accepting, loves to share, and can whisper during quiet hours! HOW LONG BEFORE COMING UP WITH THE IDEA DID YOU EXECUTE THE PLAN AND HAVE YOUR FIRST PODSHARE UP AND RUNNING? I was in the shower when I day-dreamt up the idea of “housing in the cloud” and came up with the name podshare because we would literally share pods across the city/state/world….but also an iPod holds a bunch of data and I thought our experiences can be stored here…, and pods are sleeping capsules in Japan…and peas in a pod are cute.  I imagined aiding in globalization but offering to share pods for one rate anywhere in the world …never paying 2 rents but rather transferring the bed from one neighborhood to another at the touch of a button.  As I was driving, I saw the bicycle with chevron symbol that means “share the road” and thought it was the perfect logo for sharing… a home. ARE ALL THE LOCATIONS THE SAME OR ARE THERE DIFFERENCES IN SET UP? DOES BEING THE SAME/ BEING DIFFERENT MATTER? Same pod design and amenities, with 1 Murphy pod in each location. Floor plan is generally the same. Always the ground floor. Think of PodShare as a shoe. In the beginning it was used as a flip flop for travelers to see the city with, these last 3 years it has become a sneaker for convenient housing, and soon it can be a boot to get through life’s harder points. PodShare for Social Good has the intention is to build one location as a template for more - that’s how we proved the concept out in 2012. This organization would service the most vulnerable of the already vulnerable homeless population: women, youth and veterans. Step 1 is to identify a location, while simultaneously funding for it. Centrally located near gig economy opportunities Safe parking opportunities, drop-in center for any person that needs assistance, and overnight shared accommodations Step 2 is entitling the location, communicating with the neighborhood, and sourcing affordable building materials for the TI Step 3 is building out the location "Habitat for Humanity" style inclusion, and opening the doors with our service partners. A pod is a hand built, high end bunk bed complete with your own flat screen tv, personal outlets and night light. Our wooden structures have staircases which allow easy access to the top pods and provide stability that metal bunk beds don’t offer.  WHAT ARE YOUR HOURS? Call or preferably text us  at 213-973-7741 between 7am to 11pm, but all locations are open 10 am – 1pm for checkins. If you are arriving after these hours, please email us to arrange self checkin instructions. HOW DO YOU CO-LIVE? Co-living is easy and fun, in fact this concept is neither new nor unusual. You more than likely co-lived with your family when you were young and your dorm mates in college. We believe that you only really need a small space to yourself to sleep, relax and store your belongings. The rest of our time should be spent on shared experiences. Sharing common areas allows you to bump into new friends, potential future roommates, or even strike up a conversation with someone you never thought you’d talk to. We call these moments Collisions.  IS PODSHARING SAFE? There is security in large numbers and open floor plans, despite what some believe. The lack of privacy is a deterrent for thieves, predators and criminals because there are eye-witnesses, cameras in the common areas, and 24hr staff on site. In reality, a room is more dangerous as a villain can close the door behind them and rummage through bags or block the exit. Podshare has 2 points of exit, lockers, and someone within ear’s reach at all times. Learn more about our safety here  WHAT ARE THE RULES? Quiet hours as of 10pm, until 10am means turn your phone to vibrate and whisper No visitors allowed. Everyone must be registered at the desk No drugs, excessive inebriation, or public nudity. WHAT IS CHECK-OUT POLICY? As long as you are out of your pod by 11am, store your belongings under that pod and in a locker until 1pm. If you need to store your bags thereafter, you can pay $6/bag until 10pm or book another night to have access to the space yourself for a late flight. ARE MY BELONGINGS SAFE? Each podshare has a locker big enough to store your valuables (not your bag) in the lobby. DO I CHOOSE MY POD? After check-in you will receive a tour of the shared amenities, house rules and select your pod by writing your name on it with a piece of chalk. CAN I TRANSFER MY POD TO A DIFFERENT LOCATION? We offer unlimited transfers across our network – so if you wish to stay in another part of town, just ask your front desk RA about availability, remove your belongings from the pod (you are welcome to our storage and lockers at any PodShare during your membership) and transfer to the new location. We just ask that you don’t occupy 2 pods at the same time, but if there is an opening you can transfer your reservation same day. Please note that occasionally a location may have an uncharge, inquire by texting us at 213 973 7741 WHY WOULD I VISIT OTHER LOCATIONS? LA is a big place. Let’s say you are staying downtown but visiting Hollywood for the day, use us as your lounge, kitchen, outlets and bathrooms so you don’t have to go to a coffee shop. Examples: if your jacket is too bulky, put it in the locker. If your phone dies, use our charger or ask us to call you a taxi. If you need to get out of the heat, come in to cool off. If you want to go hiking, use our showers to freshen up. If you need coffee, make some in the kitchen. WHAT IS INCLUDED? Linens, towel, toiletries, WIFI, food in the fridge, bicycles, computer access, laundry for $7/load, housekeeping, maintenance, a network of access hubs to lounge or stay across. Please bring your own lock! CAN I HAVE A TOUR? For the security of our members, tours are not permitted without an appointment and only for stays of 7 days or longer. We offer flexible bookings options so you can spend one night, and extend if you like it! ARE PETS ALLOWED? We’re working on a PupShare concept, but at this time all PodShare locations can only accommodate service animals. CAN 2 PEOPLE SHARE A POD? The twin pod sleeps 1 and the queen pod sleeps 2 WHAT IF I WANT TO STAY LONGER? Great! Extend from the comfort of your pod @ http://book.podshare.com or go to the front desk to pay in person. If there is no space, choose another PodShare (you are welcome to leave your belongings there and check back in when it’s available again) IS THERE A MAXIMUM OR MINIMUM STAY? Stay for as littler or as long as you wish at the Los Angeles PodShare locations! San Francisco podshare has a 7 day minimum to co-live 🙂 There is never a maximum and we hope you stay awhile WHAT IF I HAVE A CAR OR A LOT OF STUFF? We are minimalist but don’t worry about the extra stuff, there is ample storage underneath pods. If you have a car, then we recommend street parking, but bring your belongings inside. Less than 10% of members have a car, and use public transportation or ride sharing. November of 2011 a lease was signed and we rode the curtails of the sharing economy all the way into the subscription economy (internet TV, blogs, carshares/scooters, gyms, dating).  From 2012 to 2015, we only operated one PodShare. All of our hypotheses were tested at this 1200 sq ft 10 pod location to create our rule book. Due to politics, we tore it all down 3 years later and furnished the unit as a co-working space before realizing that flex desks are not what people want (coffee shops do it best). Over time, we were able to re-configure 7 pods along with desks and a soundbooth for podcasting. Hollywood/Vine has seen a lot of development in the last decade, which means all new units are $2,000 per month and up. Local hotels are $250+ per night, and the hostels average $50/night but don’t accept locals or stays past 3 weeks. The concept has always been numerous locations sprinkled versus one large location per state, so doesn’t matter. While I was staying at the various Podshares, I loved the range of people who I crossed paths with and the reasons why they were choosing Podshare. Young people who were relocating to Los Angeles to either launch their careers and take a chance on the big city, to those who had already got the job and had started working but needed to work out where they would live permanently. Lots of students, musicians and young actors thriving off what LA and community living at Podshare offers. You roll into town knowing no one but in 24 hours at Podshare you have 10 different invitations on what do do that night, and a bunch of like minded new friends. I bumped into and had great conversations about contemporary music with a bunch of guys from Detroit who were in LA to meet with a producer. One of them sat all afternoon at the Hollywood big table on his little mixer devising beats to impress! Such devotion and I’d seen them that morning as a group wake early, go for a run to then return to the Podshare to out plank each other. The stories your staff have, and I’m guessing here for the tidbits of life they did share, who have been challenged and dealt with homelessness to see them operate and own the space and see what purpose and control over their lives working at Podshare gives them is quietly amazing. This may not translate but think it’s like you bumping into an NBL player...of a star team...that you didn’t know...it was midnight and I was reading in the Hollywood Podshare ( the smallest Podshare which I LOVED) and two young men walked in and politely introduced themselves to me, immediately due to the accent i knew they are ‘my kind’ we get talking and due to my questions on what do you do where do you live, one whispers he’s a West Coast Eagle, so he’s an elite sportsperson that plays AFL football in one of Australia’s top AFL teams...the people you meet at Podshare!
