Our approach to child development is rooted in respect, relationships, and the understanding that growth happens through connection, play, and experience. We create a nurturing and inclusive environment where every child feels a deep sense of belonging and connection to their Judaism. As a tight knit community rooted in Jewish values and play based learning, we embrace each child’s individuality and inspire a lifelong love of learning. We prioritize both physical and emotional well-being, ensuring that every child is supported to grow into a kind, creative, and confident Jew, ready to embrace the world with curiosity and compassion. We view behavior as communication and development as a dynamic process that unfolds in a supportive and responsive environment. We recognize that emotional, social, cognitive, physical, and spiritual development are deeply intertwined and must be nurtured together. Children thrive when: They feel safe, seen, and valued. They are given space to explore, wonder, and make meaning of the world around them. They are guided by caring adults who model empathy, self-regulation, and curiosity. They are supported through challenges, not punished for developmental struggles. Our philosophy aligns with Jewish values and reflects our commitment to building a community where children learn not only how to think, but how to care – about themselves, their peers, and their world. Pressman Academy Early Childhood Center’s curriculum encompasses a dynamic and integrated focus on learning that occurs in multiple areas of development: cognitive, language, social, emotional, physical, and spiritual. Developmentally Appropriate Practice is utilized through center-based classrooms that combine presentation of specific units of study with the philosophies of learning through play and Emergent Curriculum. Each child is viewed as an individual and the entire preschool community, teachers, parents, and children, partner to achieve learning goals. What is Curriculum? The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) defines curriculum as “the plans for the learning experiences through which children acquire knowledge, skills, abilities, and understanding.(NAEYC: DAP: Planning and Implementing an Engaging Curriculum to Achieve Meaningful Goals).” Curriculum represents the “big ideas,” themes, and the intended areas of study. For example, curricular areas in our early childhood center include math, literacy, science, social studies and creative arts in addition to Judaic areas such as holidays, values and ritual and practice. Teachers craft lesson plans, which encompass specific activities, to implement in their classrooms on a daily basis. These lesson plans are designed to teach children specific elements of the curricular areas while engaging all areas of development. They are also designed to build on and grow the children’s prior knowledge and experiences. What is Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP)? The NAEYC defines Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP) as ”methods that promote each child’s optimal development and learning through a strengths-based, play-based approach to joyful, engaged learning.” When teachers follow DAP it means that they are considering each child’s individual strengths and weaknesses, as well as the makeup and interests of the whole group, and planning activities and experiences designed to maximize each child’s development across all domains and to allow them to realize their full potential in all curricular areas. What is Emergent Curriculum? Emergent Curriculum is an educational approach in which teachers plan experiences and activities that match the interests of the specific group of children with whom they are working. It is an approach that allows teachers to introduce a variety of lessons and then flexibly follow the children when they are particularly drawn to a particular concept, or become curious about something that the teacher might not have initially intended to study in depth. While certain aspects of curriculum units will be uniformly introduced in classrooms, for example the story, symbols and main rituals associated with Jewish holidays, the specific activities through which they are taught and the way in which they are expanded on will vary depending on the abilities and interests of the children in a particular group. What is Assessment? Our understanding of the way in which curriculum is both written, and yet dynamic, requires ongoing “assessment.” The Pressman ECC uses the Creative Curriculum as a guide in several areas. The Creative Curriculum helps teachers formulate their goals and objectives to maximize each child’s development and guides them in deciding what to teach. It also guides teachers in determining which materials, modalities of presenting information, and kinds of activities will allow each child to meet the goals and objectives for the particular lesson. ECC Curriculum Developmental Differentiation While curriculum goals remain consistent across age groups, children move through these goals at their own pace. In our 3s and 4s classes, we recognize and support the range of development by thinking in terms of “Emerging 3s” and “Developing 4s.” This allows teachers to scaffold learning in ways that are both responsive and realistic. Emerging 3s (young 3s) Children who are: Settling into group routines and just beginning to gain independence Still developing impulse control and verbal conflict resolution Exploring materials and concepts in more concrete, sensory-driven ways Often parallel-playing or beginning to experiment with cooperative play Needing adult support to navigate transitions, follow multi-step directions, or stay with a task How we support: Shorter activities with built-in movement and choice Frequent visual and verbal cues Intentional opportunities for turn-taking, naming feelings, and practicing routines Modeling and narrating social interactions (“I see you’re waiting for a turn, let’s find a way to ask…”) Sensory play and open-ended exploration as entry points into academic domains Developing 4s (young 4s) Children who are: Starting to internalize routines and transition more independently Initiating play with peers and demonstrating early negotiation/problem-solving skills Interested in storytelling, symbols, and concepts that extend beyond the here-and-now Beginning to take ownership of their ideas and make thoughtful decisions Ready for longer engagement, early project-based learning, and gentle challenge How we support : More sustained group activities and collaborative projects Encouraging children to reflect on choices and outcomes (“What could you try next?”) Supporting pre-literacy and numeracy through journaling, games, and documentation Expanding pretend play into stories, roles, and group scripts Asking open-ended questions to stretch thinking (“What do you notice?” “What else could happen?”) 2 Year Olds Math Readiness Children instinctively incorporate math into their daily life. In order to present sound mathematical understanding, children will participate in activities that will use numbers, develop quantitative concepts and become aware of time and space. This new school, named for Rabbi Pressman, who became the synagogue’s Rabbi Emeritus, was designed to more effectively serve the day school and supplementary school needs of the Temple Beth Am community. Soon after this restructuring, as a further expression of Rabbi Rembaum’s vision, the Pressman Academy day school developed into an early childhood through 8th grade institution. Rabbi Rembaum and Dvorah Colker – Temple Beth Am and Pressman Academy’s first Education VP – hired Dr. David “Doc” Ackerman to be the first Educational Director for the Academy. Under his leadership, a new school building opened in spring 1994; the first 8th grade class graduated; and an infectious joy permeated the students and their education. In 1995, Aviva Lebovitz took over as the Educational Director; under her leadership, the school grew to more than 400 students as she hired an exceptional staff, acquired WASC, BJE and NAEYC accreditation, and bolstered the reputation of the school. With the school now firmly established as a high-quality institution amongst Jewish Day Schools, Aviva retired, and the community hired Rabbi Mitchel Malkus to be the Education Director — a title that would be changed to Head of School. Rabbi Malkus’ tenure saw the acquisition of properties on Corning Street that would lead to the expansion of the school campus, as well as the strengthening of Pressman’s academics. This included the inauguration of its Hebrew immersion program and the introduction of new secular and Judaic studies curricula and of enhanced electronic educational tools. Rabbi Malkus also saw to the expansion of the Pressman’s dramatic and fine arts programming. As a result of these developments, enrollment continued to grow to over 500 students. Rabbi Malkus concluded his 12-year tenure as Head of School in 2013, moving across the country to become Head of School at the Charles E Smith Jewish Day School. Following a year when Rabbi Rembaum came out of retirement to serve as the Interim Head of School, Dr. Erica Rothblum became the Head of School of Pressman Academy in 2014. Pressman Academy 1055 S. Jewish Professional Discount Pressman Academy believes tuition affordability is a problem that needs to be confronted head-on. The cost of a Day School education in Los Angeles continues to increase, making it less and less attainable for too many families who want to be at Pressman, and whom we want to be a part of the fabric of our community. We are particularly sensitive to the fact that many families who work on behalf of the Jewish community can often not easily afford to live in the Jewish community, with the increasing cost of living in our city in addition to synagogue memberships, kosher food, school tuitions, and camp fees. In the 2022-2023 school year we launched the Jewish Communal Professional Discount Program, which is the first step in a long-term strategy to meaningfully address tuition affordability. This initiative aims to make a Pressman education affordable for any Los Angeles family in which at least one parent works in and for the Jewish community. The Jewish Communal Professional Discount Program reflects the values we instill in our students. Pressman prioritizes Jewish engagement in a myriad ways, from our rigorous Hebrew and Judaic Studies curriculum and deep commitment to Israel, to the tikkun olam opportunities we foster and the connections we forge with Temple Beth Am. It is only fitting then that our fee structure recognizes and welcomes to our thriving community those families who have dedicated their professional lives to upholding and amplifying these same values. For the 2026-2027 school year, families must show a financial need for the Jewish Professional Discount. Qualifying families will be charged 50% of tuition for all children in the Pressman Academy ECC and Day School. The application will open this fall and the deadline to apply for the Jewish Communal Professional Discount is December 15th, 2025 . Learn more information about the Jewish Communal Professional Discount and apply HERE . Please email [email protected] with questions. Families who need additional tuition assistance can apply for funds on top of the 50% discount. The Jewish Communal Professional Discount Program is intended for any family in which at least one parent works directly for a qualifying Jewish non-profit (501c(3), etc.) in a full-time, paid capacity (a minimum of 35 hours/week.) and/or Full-time practicing clergy (Rabbinic or Cantorial) who demonstrate a financial need for tuition assistance. Pressman Academy produces scholars, innovators, tinkerers, critical thinkers and moral decision makers. Each year, nearly 100% of our 8th graders are accepted to their first-choice high school. Our students consistently compete at the highest level in the L.A. County Science Fair, rank amongst the top 30 schools in the state in the California Math League, place in the Middle School Moot Beit Din competition, and demonstrate Hebrew proficiency on Avant testing. But the General and Judaic Studies program at Pressman is about so much more than achievements. We believe that every great teacher changes the world. We believe that learning is fun when it is meaningful and connected to the real world. We believe that a differentiated classroom – where every single child is seen and supported – is a successful classroom. And we believe that joy is essential, because happy, engaged children are learning children. Pressman students excel precisely because of how we approach the work of developing minds. Nurturing hearts. There is a reason that Pressman Academy is known as the school that develops the hearts and souls of children. Social-Emotional learning isn’t an afterthought here; on the contrary, it’s foundational to the Pressman educational experience. We are proud to have a Wellness Department, staffed by three full time educators and therapists, focused entirely on the wellbeing of our students. From two-year-olds practicing yoga and meditation to our Day School Council program, Pressman students learn how to communicate deeply, understand themselves and their peers, and resolve conflict. Instilling Jewish values. At Pressman, Jewish inquiry and practice is joyful and serious, rooted and innovative, rigorous and welcoming. Stroll down our hallways any time of day, any day of the week and you will hear small voices singing shabbat songs, medium voices belting out birkat hamazon , bigger voices reading Torah . We foster our students’ commitment and connection to Judaism through Hebrew, t’fillah , Torah , Rabbinics, and a love of Israel. We live our values through community partnerships and tikkun olam opportunities. Our students graduate prepared for Jewish Studies classes at the high school level, and they bring with them an immersive Jewish experience that is grounded in the history, traditions, rituals, and rhythms of Jewish life. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom. -Viktor E. Frankl Social and emotional well-being have a close correlation with academic success. Research shows that programs that support students’ development in communicating effectively, negotiating conflict, practicing empathy, understanding their own skills and abilities, managing their emotions and behavior, and other social and emotional skills can lead to better academic and life outcomes. At Pressman Academy, we encourage each student to achieve the maximum of their potential, academically, socially, and spiritually; our whole-child approach to education includes social and emotional learning. While classroom teachers address certain topics in class, our life skills class, Kesher, takes a very personal look at human behavior. The fundamental goal of life skills education is to enable individuals to use knowledge and develop skills that permit them to grow healthy habits. Students are supported in their efforts to apply knowledge, attitudes and behaviors toward achieving wellness and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It is worth noting that the Portrait of a Pressman Graduate aspires for our graduates to be “health literate individuals who are critical thinkers and problem solvers, responsible and productive citizens, self directed learners, and effective communicators.” Elementary School Kesher Curriculum Kindergarten Students in kindergarten are introduced to life skills class 30 minutes/week, and classroom teachers integrate health education into the classroom as well. The ECC offers half day (9:00 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.) and full day (9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.) programs. All four-year-olds are placed in a full-day program. Is there before and after school care, even for my two year old? Once a two year old’s transition is complete, we do offer early and after care as an option. Before school care is from 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. and after school care is from 3:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Does my child need to be toilet trained? No. We believe that “toileting” is a learned process. Children learn how to use the toilet in a variety of ways, either when they determine they are ready or by watching peers. Most two year olds and many three year olds have not yet learned to use the toilet but will likely do so once they start school. What is the drop-off/pick-up procedure? For children three and up we offer the option of a drop-off/pick-up car line. If your child is younger than three in September, you may park on La Cienega Boulevard (after 9:00 a.m.), or in the tennis parking structure on La Cienega Boulevard. and Gregory Way to drop-off or pick-up your child in their classroom. More information regarding pick-up and drop-off will be available in the Parent Handbook. What is your sick policy? We take the health of our community extremely seriously. In order to provide the best possible school experience for everyone, children, teachers, and administrators all need to be healthy. We understand that it’s challenging when your child needs to stay home, and we also cannot have sick children at school. If your child’s nose is excessively runny, they don’t seem to be their healthiest selves, or they are contagious, we ask that you please keep them home. If during the day your child’s nose is running excessively, they have a fever, vomit, or may have a contagious illness, caregivers will be called to pick up their child. Do you provide food? Children bring snacks from home and we are a nut-free campus. All food brought to Pressman must be Kosher. We offer an optional hot lunch program Monday – Thursday with a variety of menus. The meals cost approximately $8 per day. In addition, we have a pizza program on Fridays for an additional fee. Families may send their own kosher dairy or pareve lunch for their child on Mondays and Fridays, and may send their own kosher meat, dairy or pareve lunch for their child on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. How do I help my child transition into the ECC? The Transition process for all children (especially two year olds) can last two weeks, and is an important part of setting up your child for success. Every child separates on a different timeline and we ask that parents/caregivers plan to be available to stay at the ECC during the transition process. That means parents/caregivers will be on campus until your child is fully ready to spend the day without you there for comfort. Transition happens in partnership with your child’s teacher and has two parts: Transition: Helping children feel safe while giving them time to adjust to their new setting, get comfortable with a new routine, and develop relationships with the new adults in their new environment. Separation: Feeling confident and ready to be away from their primary caregiver for the full day. How can I be involved? We encourage our parents to be involved at many levels. We have an active and ambitious Parent Association with many opportunities from support to leadership positions. In addition, our teachers love to have you in the classroom! Whether you help with baking, assist with an art project, read a story, chaperone a field trip, or just lend an extra set of hands, your involvement is always welcome. What is the religious atmosphere of the ECC? We offer a program that integrates Jewish tradition into everyday activities. We celebrate Shabbat and the holidays in a way that is meaningful, age-appropriate, and joyful. We encourage the children to experience God’s presence everywhere, from the classroom to the synagogue to the sandbox, raising their awareness of their own special place in God’s world. Our day begins with morning line-up where we incorporate Jewish traditions at the start of every day. Our day includes t’fillah (prayer) and blessings said before and after eating. On Mondays morning line-up includes Havdallah and we enjoy a lovely Kabbalat Shabbat service on Friday mornings in the chapel. Our families represent a wide spectrum of Jewish observance. We are an inclusive environment for all families, no matter how they observe. Is there Hebrew in the ECC? Research shows that the optimum age to introduce a second language is between the ages of three and seven when the first language is acquired. The system we use introduces Hebrew in the most natural, stress-free way, the same way they are acquiring English. Although Hebrew is introduced in all of our classes, our Pre-K (four-year-old) classes have one hour per day of Hebrew in the afternoons and our three-year-olds have a Hebrew-speaking staff member speak in Ivrit, and also have a 1/2 hour of Hebrew circle time daily. What immunizations does my child need for school? California law requires all children enrolled in state schools, both public and private, to have certain doctor-recommended immunizations, or receive them when they enroll. Polio Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis (DTaP) Haemophilus influenzae type b Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) Hepatitis B Varicella (Chickenpox) Do you offer Tuition Assistance? We believe Jewish education is the responsibility of our entire community and we are dedicated to providing meaningful tuition assistance for as many families as possible to ensure that children who want a Pressman education can receive one. We also offer an innovative Jewish Communal Professional Discount Program, which we hope will be the first step in a long-term strategy to address tuition affordability. You can find the tuition assistance application on our website, Pressmanacademy.org. Day School How long is the school day? We encourage the balanced development of the whole person, equally focusing on both intellectual growth as well as social and emotional development. Our academic curriculum focuses on growing reflective, collaborative and skillful thinkers, in both General Studies and Judaic Studies. But Pressman students excel because of how we approach the work of developing minds. Our supportive classroom environment, along with our focus on strong teacher-student relationships, invite children to take risks, to engage deeply in curriculum and to love learning. Through our dual curriculum and Hebrew immersion program, students learn what they need to know and, more importantly, how to apply that knowledge to make the world a better place. As our Elementary School students go through their schooling journey, they are preparing to move on to Middle School with all of the tools that they need to succeed. In addition to important social, emotional and academic skills, students work on crucial executive functioning skills, developing their ability to plan thoroughly and self regulate effectively. Curriculum Language Arts Pressman Academy is committed to a balanced literacy program that helps students become lifelong readers, writers, and critical thinkers. We are proud to use both the Reading and Writing Workshop program out of Teachers College at Columbia University, as well as Fundations Phonics and Handwriting, as two curricula in our program. The Reading and Writing Workshop programs are research-based instructional models that provide students with explicit strategies in reading and writing instruction, while providing them with opportunities to practice and internalize those strategies independently and in small groups. In addition to Reading and Writing Workshop, our students engage with the Fundations phonics and handwriting program in grade K-3, and engage in more advanced phonics and word study work in grades 4-5. They also learn and practice cursive handwriting in the upper elementary grades. Our students develop a passion for reading, writing, and communicating, which stays with them throughout their lives. Daily instruction in Language Arts includes whole-class direct instruction, read-alouds, shared reading/writing experiences, word study, small group reading instruction, and individual instruction. Because students progress at different rates, assessment is used to guide the teacher in determining individual book choices and areas of strength and growth in the students’ writing development. Through this differentiated and balanced approach, students become proficient readers and writers who are able to communicate effectively through writing and who can read and critically analyze texts of increasing difficulty. Kindergarten In Reading Workshop, students begin to develop the sense that they are readers! The students are exposed to read-alouds and shared reading experiences. They recite poems, rhymes, and songs and deepen their understanding of the fact that letters and sounds turn into meaningful words and sentences. Students read in small groups and begin to develop their reading stamina by reading more independently. Grade specific units include units on print strategies (directionality, print has meaning, organization), how to sound out tricky words, staying focused on print, and reading longer/more difficult sentences and books; and through Fundations students will engage in instruction on sight words, phonetics and phonemic awareness. By the end of the year, most kindergarteners will be able to read simple stories with 2-6 lines of text per page; will begin to follow text with their eyes, rather than pointing; will use a combination of picture clues and sound recognition to help them read unfamiliar words; and will read easy, high frequency words such as the, and, like, see, here, look, is, can, in, it . In Writing Workshop, students draw and write to convey meaningful and important messages. Students learn to use proper spacing and end punctuation, and they learn the importance of sequencing their thoughts using a beginning, middle, and end to their stories. Handwriting is taught utilizing multi-sensory techniques and consistent habits for letter formation through the Fundations phonics and handwriting program. Instructional techniques and activities help to improve each child’s self-confidence, pencil grip, body awareness, and posture.Throughout the year students will learn to craft personal narratives, informational books, and persuasive writing. By the end of the year, students will be able to write simple narratives and expository texts conventionally with a clear beginning/middle/end and at least one sentence per page. First Grade First graders learn how to question and analyze books through connecting texts to their lives and to other books. Students learn to read grade-level texts independently with proper fluency and comprehension. They study phonics, syllabication, and word parts and apply this knowledge to achieve fluent oral and silent reading skills. First graders end the year knowing that reading and writing hold great power and the students become readers, thinkers, and composers of meaning. When writing, first graders will construct complete sentences using capital letters at the beginning, periods at the end, and will incorporate newly acquired vocabulary into their writing. In Writing Workshop, first graders continue to build on the learning from previous years and work to write in complete sentences using appropriate letter and word spacing as well as proper end punctuation and capitalization. First graders write small moment stories, non-fiction chapter books, reviews, and realistic fiction stories. First graders will be able to properly form all upper and lower case letters. Second Grade In Reading Workshop, students build upon their phonemic awareness and reading comprehension skills in order to independently read and analyze more sophisticated texts. In this sense, they move from a focus on reading print to reading for meaning. Second graders read more fluently and accurately with appropriate pacing, intonation, and expression. They will be able to read approximately 90 words per minute with fluency and understanding. Students also improve their reading stamina by sustaining attention to a text over many days, remembering details and revising interpretations as new events are encountered. Reading and writing skills are more seamlessly integrated as students begin writing in a Reading Workshop notebook in order to jot down their observations and questions about important characters and plot lines. In Writing Workshop, students begin to develop more compelling introductions and conclusions and focus on incorporating greater detail, action, and dialogue into their writing. Second graders write personal narratives and collaborate with the STEAM teacher to develop lab reports/science books. They also focus on writing about reading as well as a poetry unit. When writing, second graders will be able to write clear, legible manuscript at an appropriate rate. Third Grade In Reading Workshop, students continue to improve readi Tuitions & Fees - Pressman Academy Go Close Toggle navigation About Mission Community & History Leadership The Story of Pressman Jobs Contact Program Portrait of a Pressman Graduate Early Childhood Center Elementary School Middle School Wellness The Arts Lainer Library Athletics After School Admissions Admissions at Pressman Growing Up Pressman Visit Tuitions & Fees Day School Affordability Apply Now Frequently Asked Questions Community Wellness Resources Quick Links Parent Association Parenting Institute Parent & Me Classes Temple Beth Am Giving Case for Giving Annual Campaign Capital Campaign Tuitions & Fees Pressman Academy is a school that prepares our children to be the kind of adults we want to see in this world – critical thinkers, moral and ethical decision makers, rooted in Jewish practice and values. It can also be challenging and complex. The Parenting Institute is dedicated to providing education to parents, both on an individual and a group level. Our programs are designed to support parents, give them access to information, and help guide them in raising their children. We actively incorporate the principles of education and psychology with Jewish philosophy. The Parenting Institute works in partnership with the staff of Pressman Academy to best serve the needs of our parents. About Sari Abrams, Director of Parent Child Education Sari Abrams has been an educator at Pressman for 21 years. During that time she has served in a variety of roles including lead teacher in the ECC, Parent and Me facilitator, and Parenting Institute Coordinator. For the past 7 years she has served as the Director of Parent and Child Education. In this role she teaches parenting classes, meets with parents individually to address questions and concerns around parenting, provides parenting resources to all the parents and, along with other members of the Wellness Team, facilitates programs and education for parents. Sari studied Psychology both as an undergraduate and graduate student and holds a Master’s in Clinical Psychology, with an emphasis on Child Development. She was a member of the inaugural cohort of The First 36 Project Fellowship, a professional development program for educators working with parents of children ages zero to three. She is a mentor for graduate students in the Master’s in Early Childhood Education program at AJU, and also an instructor in the BA in Early Childhood Education Completion Program at AJU. Much of Sari’s expertise around parenting derives from her experience in “the field” as she has raised three boys who are now 32, 28 and 20! Pressman Academy 1055 S. We are committed to fostering the wellbeing and engagement of all students. Our programs enhance our students’ confidence and sense of self while also helping them to be change agents in our world. Our Middle School program provides a rigorous and engaging learning environment where every child is known and appreciated for his or her strengths. Through research-based curricula, students develop the academic and critical thinking skills needed to succeed in High School. Through their core studies (Hebrew, Humanities, Math, Rabbinics, Science and TaNaKH ), an engaging advisory program and thoughtful Life Skills class, athletics, leadership opportunities, musical theater and community service, our students’ brains, hearts and values are nurtured and grown. Our Middle School students move on to High School well-prepared for the academic, social and emotional challenges they will face while rooted in community and values. We also recognize that middle school is a journey, not a destination. From the time students enter sixth grade until they graduate eighth grade and move onto high school, the data points of information, test scores and performance inform our instruction but we never lose sight of preparing our students with the necessary skills to become resilient, ethical, and motivated learners rooted in their Jewish values. Curriculum Humanities Humanities strives to integrate subjects so that students experience continuity in their study and gain the ability to view topics from multiple angles. Students learn to make connections to current issues through the lens of a historical perspective. This three year course of study is taught as an integrated language arts and social studies program, with the incorporation of other disciplines. While students will study each subject – learning historical facts, diving deeply into the study of the English language, learning content, and improving their reading comprehension and writing abilities – the emphasis is on a program that gives students the opportunity to analyze their own identities and roles as global citizens as they grapple with environmental issues, political systems and power structures, and civic engagement with fundamental ideas about citizenship, freedom, morality, and law. We seek to engage students in the learning process, challenging them to stretch and wrestle with the world of ideas with depth and sensitivity. The program inspires an appreciation and deepening understanding of history, culture, literature, fine art, poetry, and drama, while cultivating and celebrating independent and critical thinking. Students learn to respect the point of views of others even as they work to develop and defend their own. 6th Grade Humanities Sixth graders examine Ancient Civilizations, including Ancient Greece, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Rome and China, exploring traditional myths about gods, goddesses, heroes, and monsters as well as historical accounts of remarkable individuals. Using a variety of texts, which are mostly drawn from primary sources originating in the ancient Mediterranean basin, students begin to understand the societies that created these works and the place of humans within them. By writing across various genres, using historical fiction and literary analysis, and studying greek and latin roots of words, students become adept at analyzing the writing and civilizations of the time to examine whether the approaches that work for explaining the political and social structures of these civilizations are useful for the analysis of another culture that was not part of the same tradition. 7th Grade Humanities Seventh graders examine Current Events and Comparative Religion, recognizing that learning about the experiences of others allows us to reexamine our own lives in new ways. Essential questions for the course include: How do people create identity? How do groups create and maintain community? and How do groups develop and change? Students examine the origin, development, rituals, beliefs, and modern communities of Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism through writing across genres, research-based essays, historical fiction book clubs, documentary studies and primary sources. 8th Grade Humanities Eighth Grade Humanities weaves together U.S. History and Current Events, asking important questions about the dichotomy of America’s association with the ideals of human Rights without always reflecting reality. Students learn that writing is an act of Social Justice, and will explore such questions as Who is an American? Who gets to tell our American story? Whose voices are omitted? and How did the U.S. get its power? Through reading and literary analysis, studies in historical fiction and Shakespeare, and studying primary documents such as the Constitution, eighth graders will leave the year able to read, write and speak powerfully about our country, its legacy and its future. Math Mathematics provides students with a platform to foster the growth and development of analytical thinking skills while also allowing students a space to hone their creative thinking. The Pressman Academy Middle School mathematics department is dedicated to providing a curriculum that develops mathematicians who are resourceful problem solvers, keen strategizers and critical thinkers. We want our students to feel confident and ready to take on math in today’s global mathematics arena. The goal is for all students to complete Algebra I at a middle school level in preparation for entrance into high school math. 6th Grade Pre-Algebra Our sixth grade pre-algebra course lays the foundation for students to bridge their elementary skill set with higher level algebraic concepts. During the year, students cover algebraic expressions and integers; operations with fractions; decimals and percents; ratios and proportions; and solving one step equations and inequalities. Our sixth grade math classes are grouped heterogeneously with much differentiation to allow all students to thrive in a high school preparation program in seventh and eighth grades. 7th Grade Algebra A Upon entering seventh grade, students begin the first course in our Algebra I path. Students begin the year with a foundational algebra review and then cover solving linear equations; representing math in multiple ways, slope (including coordinate plane/graphing, slope from two points, writing equations in slope intercept form and slope as a rate of change); probability; and rates, ratios and proportions. 8th Grade Algebra B Students in eighth grade complete the Algebra I course by taking Algebra B. In Algebra B students cover systems of equations ; quadratics (including multiplying polynomials, factoring trinomials using multiple methods, the quadratic formula and graphing quadratics); exponents and logarithms; and algebra and geometry integration. Science Middle School Science classes focus on the development of inquiry, organizational, critical thinking, and problem resolution skills. Based on Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), the science program is designed to develop and reinforce understanding and skills through a variety of hands-on activities. The goal of the Pressman Academy Arts Department is to promote self-expression, individuality, self-confidence, self-discipline, problem solving, and to increase motor skills and out-of-the-box thinking. In our ECC, art is an integral component of the curriculum that focuses on process. And in our Day School, students are inspired by famous and influential works of art from all over the world. Through hands-on experiences, they develop their skills in a wide variety of mediums, including painting, drawing, printmaking, collage, and sculpture. In addition, the art program supports and collaborates with the learning materials from other classes. At the end of the year each student’s works are presented in an art exhibition that showcases the variety of the projects that were created during the school year. Performing Arts Music is an essential component of our curriculum. We teach general music education and Jewish/Hebrew singing to our students. Our Gesher through fifth grade music program is hands-on and designed to bring out an appreciation and love of music in each child. Our middle school music program is elective based and allows opportunities for composition, instrumental music and choir. Music is enjoyed and integrated into all of our wonderful milestone class celebrations. Middle School Musical Each spring the Middle School puts on a musical production for the entire community. Past productions have included “Mary Poppins,” “The Wizard of Oz,” “Annie”, “Hairspray”, “Oliver”, “Grease”, “Guys and Dolls”, and “Legally Blonde.” The Middle School performing arts program is vital to the growth of the whole child. Responsibility, leadership, teamwork, confidence, and self-awareness are just a few of the building blocks reinforced through this experience. This journey offers a quiet child scripted structure and technique to work from, while developing new skills and confidence. It offers a more outgoing child an opportunity to experiment within a safe realm. The most beneficial aspect of this program is that it offers our students the opportunity to learn more about themselves, their talent, and their immeasurable potential. These life lessons will carry through to their academic learning, relationships, and decision making. Pressman Academy 1055 S. All parents or legal guardians of students at Pressman Academy are members of the Parent Association. Dues are built into the tuition agreement. The PA chairs are volunteers who are committed to serve our school community. The PA encourages all parents to get involved in the multitude of activities it sponsors. Parents should feel free to contact any and all PA volunteers when they have questions or concerns regarding any PA issue. Questions regarding the school’s academic program should be addressed with the school’s professionals. How to Get Involved Room Parent . Act as a year-long liaison communicating important information between your child’s teacher, the Parent Association (PA), the school, and parents. Attend PA meetings and serve as the eyes and ears of the PA to help address parent concerns. Lainer Library Volunteer . Work with the librarian to enhance the services and operation of our school library. Responsibilities include displaying items, managing bulletin boards, shelving books, and assisting with the Book Fair and Book Share. Hanukkah Boutique . Work with our dynamic team of business savvy parents on this annual event that brings together vendors at a one-stop shop for all your Hanukkah needs. And a portion of the proceeds goes back to our school! Hesed Committee . Help reach out to families within our school who are experiencing the joys and difficulties of various life-cycle events. Help is needed to make phone calls and activate a circle of caring that includes assistance with meals, carpools, play dates, etc., during a family’s time of need. Social Action Committee . Facilitate acts of community service for students and families to help those in need. Welcome Committee . Help activate a support system for new families. This committee plans back-to- school parties and activates various networks within each class to make new families feel welcome and involved in our vibrant community. Party Book . This is a way to throw social events throughout the year that benefit both our school community and raise money for the Parent Association. This is how it works: Families offer to sponsor (host) a party. Sponsorship (host) duties include paying for the event, finding a place to hold the event, and taking care of all details and payments related to the event (host families can use their sponsorship as a tax deductible donation to Pressman Academy). Pressman families pay to attend the event(s) and the money paid to attend the party goes directly to the Parent Association (host families do not recoup the costs of hosting the events). You may get involved either by offering to host a party (all ideas are welcome), or by attending a party (a fun way to socialize with your friends, meet new ones, and raise money for our school). **Other important ways to volunteer are by serving on the committees for Hot Lunch, Pizza, Treasury, Speaker Series, among others. We also invite parents to suggest new ideas and opportunities! If you would like to volunteer in a way that was not mentioned in any of the above choices, please let us know. We can meet to discuss a volunteer opportunity that you will enjoy! Pressman Academy 1055 S. La Cienega Boulevard Los Angeles, CA 90035 310-652-2002 [email protected] © Pressman Academy, 2026.
