Growing up as the son of a tutor, Steve Feldman has many fond memories of working with his mother’s clients when she found herself overbooked. So after graduating from college and moving to the Big Apple to pursue a career in finance, it didn’t take long for him to be drawn back to his true calling – tutoring. Parents, like you, gravitated toward Steve’s approach. At first tutoring was a part-time gig, but as the impact Steve had within the community grew, so did his desire to help more students. He began the transition into pursuing this greater goal by hiring a handful of talented tutors to help work with the influx of clients. He knew he was onto something big, and brought on board long-time college friend and passionate entrepreneur, Scott Levenson, to help build a first-rate organization. It’s always been about more than academics. Upon arrival, Scott’s first question to Steve was, “What makes you such an effective tutor?” Steve started asking his students and one answer kept coming back over and over again… Unlike so many other tutors that churned through the material, Steve not only provided great academic support – his unwavering enthusiasm and personal interest in their success motivated his students to want to go further… and to take pride in their accomplishments . Steve’s unique approach has gone on to help thousands of students Private Prep nurtures Steve’s original approach in every new hire by methodically recruiting and rewarding a team of educators who share that same sense of positivity and pride they hold for the profession. Our culture of caring. At Private Prep, our students are our first priority. While working with students, we do all we can to help them learn to thrive by matching them with dynamic, well-trained tutors. We also invest in and care about our tutors and employees. Through professional development events, support from our Curriculum Team, and a peer-mentorship program, we ensure that our tutors are prepared to handle any challenges that come their way. Private Prep’s structure is also unique from other tutoring and test prep companies in that we offer a layer of support in between tutor and family in the form of our directors of client relations. Directors of client relations are the first people from our team to meet with clients in-person, and their purpose is twofold: to provide students and their families with information about our company/process, and also to get to know the student to match them up with a tutor who will be a good fit. How do you hire/train tutors? Most of our hires come through referrals from current tutors. Because we are fortunate enough to have fantastic tutors on our team already, we rarely have a hard time finding more great tutors from our existing tutors’ network of talented peers. All prospective tutors first take and pass an assessment with flying colors in whichever subject(s) they wish to tutor. They are then interviewed and required to conduct a mock lesson that allows our Hiring Team to assess their ability to communicate their knowledge effectively. Remaining candidates go through our final, rigorous development process, which involves blended learning and one-on-one sessions with members of our Development Team. We also offer professional development workshops and round tables throughout the year in a range of subjects that allow tutors and staff to further develop skills and understanding of how to best support students and families. How much does it cost? Our programs are highly customized and pricing varies by location, service, and tutor. Please contact us to discuss the most accurate pricing for your needs. What services do you offer? Do you just tutor the SAT/ACT? We offer subject tutoring for grades 4-12 as well as test prep for the SAT/ACT, ISEE, SHSAT, SSAT, BJE, TACHs, NY Regents, IB Exams, and AP Exams. We also offer Academic Support with reading and writing skills, math fundamentals, and executive functioning along with College Admissions Consulting that focuses on college essay editing and navigating the admissions process at large. Additionally, we have a college transitions program and provide college level support for students who want to make sure they thrive after leaving home. Can I take a practice test at Private Prep if I’m not using your tutors? Unfortunately no. We only offer à la carte practice tests to Private Prep students. We want to make sure we do not overcrowd our testing sites. Subject tutoring is a unique opportunity to supplement the classroom in a personalized, private setting where learning moves at the pace of the student. Private Prep tutors provide online and in-person multi-dimensional support, ranging from homework help to test preparation to study habits to test-taking tips. Subject tutoring is a valuable supplement to any phase of a student’s education. High School While high school usually means studying the same subjects over a four year period under various teachers, it also means the subject matter becomes more complex and the stakes become higher as graduation draws closer, since grades can impact your acceptance into college. Our subject experts help students take control of their academic narrative by providing one-on-one support and strategies that fit students’ learning styles. Middle School For most students, middle school is a challenging time of transitions. However, it’s a critical time to build strong foundational skills in mathematics and language.
