Photochromic lenses (with or without prescription) adjust to brightness. They darken as you step outside on a sunny day and get lighter when you go indoors. This means that you can wear the same glasses everywhere without having to switch from regular glasses to sunglasses. Are sunglass lens coatings worth it? While sunglasses provide plenty of protection for your eyes, lens coatings add even more benefits. You can choose anti-reflective coatings to cut down on glare and make driving safer. Tinted sunglasses can help you see colors and detail more distinctly. Scratch-resistant coatings help prevent damage so you can enjoy your shades for longer. Is it OK to wear sunglasses with contacts? Unless your contact lenses provide 100% UV protection — most don't — always remember to don your sunglasses before heading outdoors. Sunglasses with 100% UV protection screen out harmful rays and winds that tend to dry out your eyes more quickly. This is good news for contact lens wearers who run the risk of developing dry eye symptoms. How to tell if sunglasses have UV protection? To make sure that your sunglasses block 100% of UVA and UVB rays, make sure to purchase your shades from a licensed optometrist. Find Your Perfect Sunglasses Whether you're lounging by the beach or driving through town, our designer sunglasses will bring the perfect fit and quality feel to whatever you have planned for the day. Want to customize your shades? Ask us about tinted lenses, polarized, photochromic lenses, and so much more! Know your options! Tinted lenses, polarized lenses, photochromic lenses that turn dark in the sun, and more! How Do I Choose the Right Sunglasses? To select your perfect sunglasses, consider the following: Frames You want your sunglasses to last, so choose durable, high-quality frames. Whether you choose plastic, acetate, aluminum, stainless steel or even wooden frames, make sure that the frames fit well, look good, and are comfortable to wear. Lenses Lenses correct your vision, protect your eyes and enhance your style. Always choose lenses that screen out 100% of UV rays. You can also choose special features like anti-glare, polarized shades or tints. To prevent damage, select durable lenses. Shape Sunglass shapes not only express your unique style; they provide a protective barrier against the elements. Wrap-around sunglasses shield your eyes from wind and flying debris. The right frames also complement your face and help you bring your best features forward. Prescription Once you've undergone an eye exam, you can purchase sunglasses with the same prescription as your regular glasses. Wearing prescription sunglasses allows you to enjoy the outdoors while protecting your eyes from harmful UV rays. Some popular brands we carry *Brands may vary. See store for full details. Do you have astigmatism or dry eye syndrome? Seeking colored contact lenses? Are you over 40 and struggling to read small print in books and menus? No matter the issue, we'll make sure you get the perfect contacts for your needs. Get your contact lenses fitted Poorly fitted contacts can cause blurry vision, discomfort and may even damage the cornea. To ensure you have the most comfortable fit possible, your eye doctor will take measurements and run tests to find the right contact lens for you. Once you're satisfied with the comfort and clarity of vision these contacts provide, you can buy as many contact lenses as you need for ultimate comfort and clear vision. Contact Lens FAQs Can children wear contact lenses? Yes. Contact lenses can be an excellent vision correction option for children. There's no specific age recommendation for children to start wearing contacts. Rather, parents should assess when their child is mature enough to properly care for them. Proper storage, cleaning and hygiene when inserting and taking out contact lenses are all essential for successful contact lens wear. Can I wear contact lenses if I have astigmatism? Yes. Toric lenses are a specific type of contact lens specially designed to address issues connected to astigmatism. In most cases, those with astigmatism can wear their choice of soft contact lenses, including monthly and daily disposables. Are contact lenses comfortable? Yes. Original hard contact lenses used to be quite difficult to adapt to. However, thanks to technological advancement, today's contacts are more breathable and comfortable than ever before. In most cases, soft contact lenses are easy to adapt to, even from the very start. Why might daily disposable lenses be right for me? Daily disposable lenses are a good choice for those who enjoy the convenience of throwing out used contacts each night, and inserting a new pair in the morning. This saves money, since there is no need for contact lens solution or a case to keep the lenses in. It also ensures that no debris has accumulated on the lenses overtime, since you insert a new one every day. Why might monthly-wear contact lenses be right for me? Monthly-wear lenses are great for those responsible enough to take good care of their lenses according to their eye doctor's instructions. They tend to be made of sturdier material than daily-wear lenses, meaning they don't tear as easily. The material also lets in more oxygen to the eye, preventing serious complications that can harm your long-term eye health. They are also more eco-friendly (think one lens per month vs. thirty) and are less expensive up-front. Your Future. Is your child having a hard time seeing the board in class? Do you struggle to read fine-print in books and menus? Regular comprehensive eye exams involve a series of tests that enable your Palo Alto eye doctor to check your eye health and vision. This type of eye exam can only be performed by an eye doctor, and shouldn’t be confused with the vision screenings given in schools or other non-professional settings. Having regular comprehensive eye exams is crucial when it comes to protecting your eyes from sight-threatening diseases, and ensuring that your optical prescription is up-to-date. A comprehensive eye exam can also reveal signs of a general health condition like diabetes, hypertension or high cholesterol. Contact our eye care clinic today to schedule your comprehensive eye exam! Why Is It Important to Get Your Eyes Tested Regularly? Comprehensive eye exams are an important part of maintaining great vision and eye health for the entire family. During your eye exam, your eye doctor will check for any refractive errors or visual skill deficiencies that may hinder development or learning, and diagnose, manage, and treat eye diseases and conditions, including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy or macular degeneration that can cause severe vision loss in adults. Many of these sight-robbing conditions show little to no symptoms until they’ve already caused learning difficulties, significant damage to the eye, and/or irreversible vision loss. Routine eye exams ensure early diagnosis and treatment of these and other conditions. What to Expect From Your Eye Exam Glasses/contact lens prescription updates We’ll provide you with an updated prescription so that you can see clearly. Some people require a new prescription every year, whereas others only need a new prescription every 2-3 years. Evaluating your child’s vision for learning Conditions such as strabismus and amblyopia, and visual skill deficiencies such as convergence insufficiency can negatively impact your child’s learning. Diagnosis & treatment of eye diseases Eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy may show no symptoms until it’s too late. The earlier the treatment, the more effective the outcome. Rule out signs of systemic diseases Common systemic diseases such as diabetes and stroke can first be detected in the eyes as part of a comprehensive eye exam. (650) 327-2840 Comprehensive Eye Exams FAQs Is a comprehensive eye exam the same as a vision screening? No. Vision screenings like the one performed for children in school or at optical-only stores only check for 20/20 vision. They do not check for the presence of sight-threatening eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration or cataracts. They also do not check for visual skill deficiencies such as problems with visual tracking or processing. Comprehensive eye exams are more thorough and use advanced equipment to evaluate your vision and eye health. How often should I get an eye exam? Eye doctors usually recommend that you come in for a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year. This ensures that your glasses or contact lens prescription stays up to date and that signs and symptoms of developing eye conditions are caught early before they cause lasting damage. When should I bring my child in for their first comprehensive eye exam? It’s important not to delay eye exams for young infants and children as some early eye problems can affect vision for life. Detecting vision problems early can keep a minor issue from becoming something serious (and more challenging to treat). Want to get your children off to a good start in life? Whether it’s a workplace accident, an at-home incident, or some other emergency requiring immediate attention, we’re here to help you preserve your eye health and sight! What To Do If You Have an Eye Emergency First things first. Don’t panic! Staying calm is the best way to help you think straight and help those around you to remain calm. Often, it’s not necessary to go to an emergency room for eye emergencies. In fact, the vast majority of people who go to the emergency room for eye care could have received treatment from their local optometrist instead. If you’re unsure whether you’re experiencing an eye emergency, give us a call immediately! Delay may increase the risk of serious complications and may result in vision loss. Until you see your eye doctor or seek urgent care, avoid the following: Don’t try to remove an embedded object out of your eye If your eye is injured, don’t press on it or rub it Dry cotton and sharp instruments such as tweezers should never be used on the eye. Whether you’ve had a workplace accident or an at-home incident, our eye doctors are here to help Eye Emergencies FAQs What is considered an eye emergency? Eye emergencies are anything that may cause permanent damage to your eyes or vision without timely intervention from an eye care professional. The most common types of eye emergencies include: A blow, poke or other trauma to the eye Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes Chemical spills in the eye Foreign object embedded in the eye Sudden appearance of light flashes or floaters Contact lens lost in the eye Does an eye infection require urgent care? Symptoms of an eye infection typically include itching, burning, redness, crusty and watery eyes. See a Palo Alto eye doctor if your symptoms last over 4 days or if you experience intense pain, redness, blurred vision or light sensitivity. What should I do if a foreign object enters my eye? Most of the time, a person can easily remove debris from the eye by repeatedly blinking to get the debris out. If that doesn’t work, you can wash your eye with saline (sterile salt water) to flush out any dust and dirt from your eye, or use streaming tap water. However, you may scratch your cornea while attempting to get an object out which can cause further sight-threatening complications. So the best thing you can do in this kind of eye emergency is to get to your eye doctor in Palo Alto as soon as possible. Meet our Eye Emergencies Doctors Joy Jin O.D. Tuyetha Mai Monique O.D. As the cataract progresses, vision deteriorates, leading to a decreased quality of life. Fortunately, cataract surgery can easily treat this condition. What Are Cataracts? Cataracts are cloudy patches that develop on the lens of your eye. Cataracts can cause blurred or double vision, may increase light sensitivity and interfere with driving, especially at night. Without cataract surgery, millions of people around the world would be unable to see clearly. The most common symptoms include: Blurred or double vision Trouble seeing at night Sensitivity to glare Colored halos around lights Colors appearing more faded Requiring brighter light for reading When to Get Cataract Surgery As we evaluate your eye health and vision, we'll carefully examine your lens for signs of cataract formation. If a cataract is detected and the clouding is causing visual disruption, our optometrist will refer you to a trusted surgeon for cataract surgery. Prospectacles Optometry will be there for you, providing pre and post cataract surgery care. As the condition begins to seriously impair your vision and adversely affects your daily life, impacting your ability to read, drive, watch TV or recognize faces, you should seriously consider surgery. Benefits of Cataract Surgery High success rate Cataract surgery, one of the world's most commonly performed surgeries, has a 95% success rate. Quick and convenient This procedure can take just 30 to 45 minutes in an outpatient setting or hospital. Prevents other eye problems Removing cataracts can reduce the risk of eye inflammation and pressure inside the eye–a leading cause of glaucoma. Rapid recovery time Patients start seeing more clearly within a few days. Colors may seem brighter thanks to the new, clear lens. How to Prepare for Cataract Surgery Apply antibiotic or anti-inflammatory eyedrops a few days before surgery if instructed to by your eye doctor Arrange for a ride after the surgery, since you won't be able to drive Wash your face in the morning of the procedure and don't wear eye makeup, strong perfumes or aftershave What Happens During Cataract Surgery Cataract surgery removes your natural cloudy lens and replaces it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) to improve and restore vision. This common and very safe procedure is performed by an eye doctor (ophthalmologist) on an outpatient basis. The eye surgeon (ophthalmologist) will perform cataract surgery on one eye at a time. That means that you will come in for another surgery on the second eye. The procedure is brief and typically takes 30 to 45 minutes to complete. The eye doctor will place drops into your eyes to numb them and dilate your pupils. Though you'll be conscious during the procedure, you may be offered a sedative to help you remain calm. The eye surgeon will then remove your natural lens and replace it with the IOL. You should feel no pain or discomfort thanks to the anesthetic. Cataract Surgery After-Care After surgery, you may feel a bit drowsy as an after-effect of the sedative. Your eye doctor will prescribe eye drops to prevent infection, inflammation and to reduce pressure within your eye. The surgeon may recommend that you wear an eye patch for a few days after your surgery and the protective shield when you sleep during the recovery period. Make sure to avoid rubbing your eyes or touching them unless necessary. A day after cataract surgery, we'll provide a post-operative eye exam to make sure that all is well. Your Palo Alto optometrist will further perform a series of follow-up exams in the weeks and months to come. If determined that you require corrective lenses following your cataract surgery, we'll make sure you get the proper prescription. Cataract Surgery Management FAQs What are side effects of cataract surgery? While side effects are rare, there are some issues that people commonly encounter in the days after surgery, as the eyes heal. Dry eye Feeling that something is in the eye Blurry vision Light sensitivity If any of these side effects do not subside within a week or two, please contact Prospectacles Optometry. Can I delay cataract surgery? You can delay cataract surgery, but keep in mind that your vision will likely worsen the longer you put off the procedure. When is cataract surgery not recommended? Cataract patients who also have age-related macular degeneration or retinal detachment may not respond well to cataract surgery and the new lens may not correct vision. Can cataract surgery give me 20/20 vision? If you had great vision before developing cataracts, it's likely that cataract surgery will restore your sight. Moreover, the IOL inserted into your eye can be designed to correct refractive errors, providing you with clear vision. Meet our Cataract Surgery Co-Management Doctor Tuyetha Mai Monique O.D. While some types of contact lenses can aggravate symptoms of dry eye syndrome, such as eye dryness, redness and irritation, other contacts are perfectly suitable for dry eyes. Speak with an eye doctor near you regarding your dry eye symptoms, and they'll prescribe the perfect contact lenses for ultimate comfort. Can a child wear contact lenses? It's a case-by-case basis. Typically, eye doctors don't prescribe contacts to children under the age of 11 or 12, though there are exceptions. Wearing contact lenses requires responsible care, including cleaning and disinfecting routines. Most teenagers can handle contact lens care if they're motivated to wear contacts. Do I need an eye exam and prescription for tinted contact lenses? Yes! Even if you're just using contacts to change the color of your eyes, you still need an eye exam and a prescription. Contact lenses are a medical device and require fitting by an eye doctor. Meet our Contact Lens Exams Doctors Joy Jin O.D. Tuyetha Mai Monique O.D. (650) 327-2840 Are your eyes sensitive to light? Do your glasses often get scratched? Lens treatments can dramatically enhance the quality of vision and the durability of lenses. Moreover, lens treatments can help protect your eyes from UV rays, glare, blue light and so much more! Our hi-tech, high-quality lens coatings provide superior durability, performance and protection. Whether you're looking for tinted lenses, UV protection, scratch-resistant or polarized coating—we've got you covered! What Are Lens Treatments & Coatings? Lens treatments are added layers applied to existing lenses, or are manufactured along with the lenses. They add features that enhance your vision or eye protection. Lens treatments or coatings improve the performance of any kind of lens. Looking for tinted lenses, anti-reflective coating, UV protection or polarized features? Check out our selection! Which Lens Treatments Are Best for You? UV Protection The UV rays in sunlight can be harmful to the eyes, and may increase your risk of cataracts, macular degeneration and other eye conditions. Lenses that block 100% UV help to ward off various eye conditions and damage. Scratch Resistant Scratches, while not likely to affect your lens performance, are an annoyance that can interfere with clear vision. That's why you should always request scratch-resistant lenses (treatment) for your eyeglass lenses. Anti-Reflective For fashion, comfort and clarity, anti-reflective treatments are the way to go. They make the lens nearly invisible, and cut glare from headlights, computer screens and harsh lighting. Photochromic Photochromic lenses automatically darken in bright light and lighten indoors, so you can enjoy eye protection anytime, anywhere – indoors and out! Our Wide Range of Lenses Selecting the right eyeglass lens depends largely on its function. From single-vision lenses to progressive polycarbonate lenses, we are happy to help you find what best suits your needs. Clean your eyeglasses daily to keep them squeaky clean and crystal-clear. In fact, proper care is essential, as it will ensure flawless vision and will help your lenses last longer. So, pop on over and we'll be happy to demonstrate how to best clean your specs! Book an appointment for an eye exam and lens treatment consultation at Prospectacles Optometry in Palo Alto to get the most out of your glasses! Lens Treatments FAQs Are my glasses already scratch-resistant? Many lenses today made of polycarbonate materials already have scratch-resistant features built in. However, most lenses are made of a resin known as CR-39, which doesn’t automatically include any lens coatings, so if scratch-resistance is important to you, ask your optician to confirm you are purchasing the right lenses for your lifestyle. Do anti-fog glasses actually work? If you wear glasses you already understand the frustration of seeing your lenses fog up as soon as you step inside from the cold. Small water droplets fog up your lenses when the surrounding temperatures are warmer than the lenses. Anti-fog coatings help prevent lenses from becoming cloudy no matter the weather. Is anti-scratch coating on glasses worth it? Even the best lens treatment can’t 100% guarantee that your lenses will never be scratched. However, the higher the quality of the coating, the better the protection.  Do I need polarized coatings? [Polarized] coatings are anti-reflective, so they reduce glare from the sun, snow, water and pavement. If you plan to use your glasses around water or snow, these lenses let you see objects in sharper detail and can make [colors] look more vivid.  Lens Treatments & Coatings in Palo Alto (650) 327-2840 Meet our Eye Doctors Hours Show More Monday Closed Tuesday 10:00 am - 5:00 pm Wednesday 10:00 am - 5:00 pm Thursday 10:00 am - 5:00 pm Friday 10:00 am - 5:00 pm Saturday 10:00 am - 4:00 pm Sunday Closed Insurance Plans Show More VSP Cigna Spectera EyeMed Superior Vision Enhance your glasses with various treatments and coatings.
