We focus on the nexus between productive agriculture and environmental sustainability, providing services for soil stability and health, water quality management, water conservation, stream and pond management, livestock areas, weed management, and fish and wildlife habitat. The RCD has been at the forefront of natural resource management and protection in Monterey County and the Central Coast. We work extensively with growers, ranchers, landowners, and partner organizations and agencies throughout the Central Coast to accomplish our mission. The RCD works closely with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to provide technical assistance to Monterey County landowners, growers and ranchers. Our Natural Resource Focus Areas: Soil Stability and Health Soil health is the foundation for productive plants and landscapes, affecting nutrient and water-holding capacity, rooting depth, disease resistance, runoff and erosion. This permit covers the RCDMC’s arundo ( Arundo donax ) and tamarisk ( Tamarisk sp.) control efforts in the Salinas River riparian corridor. The RCDMC manages these invasive plants to improve habitat for fish and wildlife and reduce flood and fire risk along the Salinas River. Beginning July 18, 2023, the RCDMC will be applying a glyphosate and/or imazapyr-based aquatic-formulated herbicide to arundo stands and tamarisk shrubs in the Salinas River riparian corridor between Soledad and King City, CA. Applications will likely continue through October 2023. Herbicide will not be applied directly into the water and best management practices should result in no water contamination. No adverse impacts to the Salinas River or receiving water bodies are expected, and there are no water use restrictions associated with this application. It can also decrease allergens, restore natural fire regimes, and improve streamflow. Weed control involves the containment, reduction, or elimination of nuisance plant species, especially non-native invasive species, through mechanical removal, herbicide application, targeted grazing, prescribed burning, biological control, revegetation with native species, or a combinations of these methods. RCD of Monterey County is currently leading the Salinas River Watershed Invasive Non-native Plant Control Program to eradicate Arundo donax (giant cane), Tamarix (salt cedar), and other invasive species from the Salinas River riparian corridor. We are committed to helping public and private landowners combat weeds throughout Monterey County, and can provide you with assistance or more information on effectively managing weeds on your property. Learn more about our Salinas River Invasive Plant Control and Restoration Program by watching this short video, WITHIN REACH: Releasing Arundo's Leafy Grip on the Salinas . Fuel Reduction for Fire Safety Creating “defensible space” by clearing brush and other vegetation around homes and structures can protect lives and property in areas where wildfire is a concern. The California Public Resources Code ( PRC 4291 ) requires property owners in areas susceptible to wildfires to maintain 100 feet of defensible space around structures. The RCD of Monterey County can help connect you with resources and funding to conduct fuel reduction projects on your property.
