Click here to fill out the application! Back to Top Board Member Spotlight She Builds SF Chapter Steering Committee Chair and Development Chair Please introduce yourself! What is your background? I am President and co-owner of Moroso Construction in San Francisco. We build custom residences and estates around the Bay Area. In my role I develop relationships with clients, architects and designers, I run projects, and I lend my deep experience in estimating, project management and team leadership to the process. I joined Moroso in 2008 and became an owner in 2016 with my partner Ron Bond. It has been exciting and rewarding to help to grow and shape Moroso’s approach, culture, values and trajectory over the years. A constant in my work is to champion women in the industry, and to chip away at the gendered assumptions that are still unfortunately too prevalent.   What made you decide to become a board member for RTSF? The Board opening came up in 2019 three years after I had helped to co-found our She Builds SF chapter. It was a natural step toward deeper involvement with the organization. I was first introduced to RTSF in 2016 through a colleague who knew that the ED at the time wanted to create a She Builds chapter and thought I’d be a great match because of my broad network in the industry and my advocacy for women in construction. I had co-founded a networking group for industry women in 2014 that had grown to a list of over 300, and could bring that to benefit the founding of She Builds SF.   What is your position and responsibilities? I hold two Chair positions on the Board: She Builds SF Chapter Steering Committee Chair and Development Chair. In my She Builds SF Chair position I’m responsible for leading the Steering Committee and for overseeing the funding and maintenance of She Builds SF as part of RTSF. I work with the ED at a strategic level to determine how She Builds SF serves RTSF’s mission in the big picture, and what RTSF wants and needs from the program. In the early years of She Builds SF we were very active, doing three projects in first year and visiting places where we could reach young women to talk about the mission and what we do, like the CityBuild trade program. In my Development Chair position I fundraise for RTSF and have established a field of donors related to the trades who are excited about our mission, including commercial and residential contractors, subcontractors, architects, etc. I also am involved in planning donor-supported events from smaller, accessible fundraisers like Trivia Night to the upcoming 35th anniversary.   What do you like about being a board member for RTSF? It’s important to me to try to improve the lives of people who are struggling in our city. I’ve lived in San Francisco for 30 years, I have a business in the city, my kids grew up here. I really value contributing on a grassroots level and fostering community through neighbors helping neighbors. She Builds SF is an extension of my work to connect and support women in construction, and being an RTSF Board member is a nice complement to what I do on daily basis.   What is your favorite memory with RTSF? My favorite RTSF memory is our visit to the Life Learning Academy, which is a public charter high school on Treasure Island. We met with the Principal and head of the carpentry division to talk about RTSF and She Builds SF, and had a lunch with the kids that they prepared. I really enjoyed learning about the school and how they provide kids with vocational skills like catering and carpentry to further their opportunities. From that meeting one young man came to an RTSF build day and a young woman came to SheBuilds. I never would have known about LLA if it weren’t for RTSF, and it remains a great example of everything working at its best to connect our mission with a new community partner. Our home repair programs focus on increasing the safety and mobility of seniors and neighbors with disabilities, preserving affordable housing for low income families, and reducing isolation and displacement. 25 Safe and Healthy Housing Priorities Safe and Healthy Housing is the foundation of our home repair work, targeting significant safety and health hazards based on the Eight Principles of Healthy Homes – keep it dry, clean, pest-free, safe, contaminant-free, well-ventilated, maintained and thermally controlled. Our 25 Health and Safety Priorities target significant health and safety hazards in homes and provide a common framework to complete comprehensive in-home assessments and set repair objectives based on each homeowner’s special needs and health status. Through critical home repairs and home modifications in underserved communities, we address the connection between health and housing, while preserving the existing affordable housing landscape across San Francisco. To expand our work, we partner with the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development (MOHCD) on this initiative to provide Critical Repairs that helps us expand our reach and depth of work by addressing accessibility, structural repairs, and fall prevention installations. *The Senior Home Repair Program is no longer accepting applications* Disaster Preparedness and Wellness Calls RTSF has served 150 low income households since December 2020 with Disaster Preparedness Safety Kits, and provided weekly Wellness Calls to hundreds of families throughout and in the aftermath of COVID-19. This work addresses emerging needs central to safety and care, decreasing isolation and sharing critical resources, and ensuring families and neighbors are prepared for future disasters such as earthquakes – providing supplies, security, safety and education that is often neglected to low-income households, specifically those in brown and black communities. Our Safety Kits contain over $100 worth of basic safety supplies, including a Red Cross First Aid Kit, emergency radio, flashlight, space blanket, soap, canned foods, and more, to ensure that all San Francisco are prepared for an earthquake or other disaster. Equity in Energy Efficiency Part of our work toward thriving communities is offering appliance upgrades to low income households. We are committed to making energy efficiency accessible to all neighbors with upgrades that will reduce their environmental impact, save them money with reduced energy bills, and improve air quality. Installing adequate and quality ventilation and appliances helps alleviate many common household health problems, improving air quality in the home is critical to protecting many of our neighbors in fragile health. Community Build Days Community Build Days bring community partners and volunteers together to revitalize and repair homes and community spaces. We host two large volunteer efforts per year; National Rebuilding Month in April focuses on projects supporting low-income homes, and our Fall effort focuses on projects at community spaces and facilities. Watch our NRM 2025 Video Here! NRM 2025 Video National Rebuilding Month A city and nation-wide renovation effort in April that engages the community to provide repairs and improvements that increase the safety and comfort of income-qualified neighbors and families. She Builds A unique effort to empower and enrich female-led and centered organizations and support women staying safe in their homes and communities. This program is run and completed entirely by women, focused on engaging and supporting a strong network of women in the trades in the Bay Area. She Builds promotes women supporting women in their communities and is held during National Rebuilding Month in April. Fall Community Build Day An opportunity for community members and partners to support a community space, garden, park, or facility with projects that create lasting and impactful renovations and upgrades to an underserved neighborhood. These projects are focused in an intentionally targeted community and work to build resiliency and connectedness with neighbors across San Francisco. Increased housing stability helps reduce displacement and homelessness, as well as the disparities in homeownership and wealth between white communities and communities of color. In 2023, we worked with nearly 9,000 volunteers to provide repairs to over 200 homes and 350 residents and is a HUGE thank you to all our supporters like you! 250 Homes Served 397 Residents Served 8,752 Volunteers 40,000 Volunteer Hours Community Entities Served In 2023, RTSF participated in a collaborative effort that repaired and renovated 10 community facilities in San Francisco. More than 90 volunteers came together to support connecting children with nature and elevating early childhood development centers during our annual Fall Build Days. At Family Connections, SHEBuilders learned new skills such as drilling using auger bits, pouring concrete, and using electric sanders. The Friends of St. Francis site fully removed the play structures ahead of schedule and completed the construction of a new sandbox! RTSF is proud to support these efforts to reduce disparities between access to nature across San Francisco. 2023 Goals for Community Facilities: Providing childcare security that improves economic and housing stability for low income families and promotes children’s healthy development, safety, and long-term success Transforming where children learn and play with sustainable materials that mimic outdoor spaces not usually available to the families we serve 10 Community Entities Served +2,500 People Impacted in the Portola, Excelsior, & OMI Neighborhoods +100 Children Served Demographics of Our Neighbors Served Over 80% of the neighbors we support identify as people of color. 65% of the neighbors that we serve are senior citizens, 36% with disabilities, 58% in female-led homes, and 100% qualify as extremely low-income. In the past three years, 49% of the neighbors we have provided services to identify as Black or African American and 18% as Hispanic or Latino. RTSF primarily serves under-resourced and excluded neighborhoods in the historically black areas in Southeast San Francisco. The neighborhoods we see a lot of requests for repairs from are largely the Bayview-Hunters Point, Visitacion Valley, Excelsior, and OMI neighborhoods. “We are very happy with all of the progress made! All of the repairs have made my life a lot easier, especially all of the work in the bathroom. Rebuilding Together made great suggestions that have improved our lives. The improved lighting and handrail to downstairs are very helpful. Everyone was very personable and it really felt like we got to know the volunteers and staff. Stars all over!” “The repairs have been absolutely wonderful. The hood over the stove that made so much noise has been replaced. I can close my bathroom door for privacy. The front door has also been fixed so it closes properly. I feel so grateful for the work that has been done. The staff has been wonderful working with me and negotiating with me to get the repairs done. I’m perfectly thrilled!” E. Dyson, Ingleside Neighborhood During last year’s storms, A.G.’s back sliding back door shattered and she realized her windows were leaking, causing damage to the walls beneath them. To prevent this worsening during the next winter storms, RTSF replaced the sliding door and sealed the windows. Additionally, we repaired the walls below the windows and installed a step into her backyard so that she could access it safely. This winter, A.G. was confident there would be no water intrusion into her home. A. To apply and learn more email [email protected] Our Impact Impact Report 2023 Free critical repairs to low income households in San Francisco help residents avoid costly repairs and maintenance that could make it harder for them to afford their homes. When you give through a DAF, your generosity helps ensure that longtime residents—seniors, veterans, and families—can remain safe, healthy, and rooted in the homes they love. How a Donor-Advised Fund Works 1. GIVE Make a tax-deductible contribution Open a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) and contribute cash, stocks, or other assets—such as private business interests, cryptocurrency, or private company stock—to receive an immediate tax deduction. 2.
