The current location does not currently meet the needs of the community. In response to public feedback, RCTA teamed up with the City of Crescent City to explore new transit center locations that would improve comfort and ease of use for passengers. The team secured $4,401,000 in funding in 2024 to design and implement a facility in a new location that would enhance: Passenger safety – Staff presence and improved oversight. Route efficiency – Driver restrooms to prevent service disruptions. Transit connectivity – Multimodal connections for seamless travel. Environmental impact – Reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Mobility and accessibility – Improved transportation options. After reviewing several potential locations, RCTA and the City agreed on a new site just half a block away from the current station, at the parking lot on Front Street and K Street in Downtown Crescent City. Along with the new facility, travel to and from the transit center will be enhanced by streetscape improvements that the City is making along Front Street. Amenities: Modern design: Staffed building with ticket sales. Restrooms. Breakroom for bus drivers. Waiting area for passengers. Outdoor space. Real-time bus tracking. Current safety standards. Goals: Improved Connectivity Increase Ridership Safety and Security Timeline: This project will follow a two-phase timeline: Summer 2025: Project approvals and environmental documentation phase begins. Winter 2025 : Completion of the CEQA (California Environmental Quality Act) document Summer 2026 : Design consultant hired to develop the design and bid documents. Summer 2027 : Construction phase expected to begin. RCTA Transit Center Relocation Outreach Timeline Project Team Meetings extend from Winter 2025 through Summer Website & Media extend from Winter 2025 through Summer 2027 Public Outreach and Engagement Events begin Summer 2025 and extend through Summer 2027 Environmental Documentation RFP Solicitation begins Spring 2025 Design RFP Solicitation begins towards the end of Spring 2026 Construction begins Summer 2027 Outreach Early and ongoing outreach will help ensure the project is welcomed by Crescent City and surrounding communities. The project team will have several methods of community engagement to promote public participation such as workshops, pop-up events, and social media. The Downtown Transit Center Project is being considered by City of Crescent City Planning Commission at their February 12, 2026 Meeting, 5:30pm at the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant Conference Room, 210 Battery Street, Crescent City, CA 95531. The Planning Commission will consider approval of a Major Site Plan and Architectural Review (AR-2601) that will allow the project to continue to completion of its environmental documentation process. The public is invited to attend and provide input. Project Area Benefits of Transit Accessibility and Onsite Staff There are many benefits to improved access to transit facilities and increased onsite staff during operations, including: Improved Transportation Access: An improved transit center would make it easier for residents to access public transportation. Enhanced Connectivity: With a central location for different transportation services, Crescent City would have better connections to other cities and regions, which could be especially useful for tourism or for residents traveling outside the area. Reduction in Traffic Congestion: By consolidating various transportation services in one central location, the need for multiple vehicles on the roads could be reduced. This could decrease local traffic congestion and improve air quality. Increased Safety: A designated transit center would provide a safe and organized place for passengers to wait, board, and disembark, as opposed to having people waiting in less controlled or less safe areas, like street corners or parking lots.
