As a business club, we encourage our members to speak about business topics, thereby sharing their insights with other club members. In addition to the regular program, we bring in guest speakers who have expert knowledge in their respective fields.   We welcome guests who are interested in developing their public speaking skills and leadership potential. You have the opportunity to introduce yourself in front of our other attendees and participate in our table topics session where you can practice impromptu speaking (but it’s optional!) At each meeting you can expect to participate as much or as little with your comfort level. You can always catch me beaming, and I believe that I can create an environment where everyone has as big of a grin as mine.   I first joined Rhino Toastmasters to perfect my best man's speech. After my first meeting, I quickly fell in love with the club. In my off time, you can find me geeking out about the latest blockbuster, traveling abroad, or attending my local neighborhood trivia nights. Let's connect! Angie Chau - VP of Education Back in the day I was a member of Rhino Toastmasters. In 2016, I left my  conventional office job to pursue my dream of becoming a digital nomad. Since then, I have visited over 50 countries, more than 25 of which I brought along my senior rescue Yorkie (Roger Wellington). In 2021, I adopted a second dog (Penny Rose) and also transformed her into a world traveler. After 8 years of nomadic lifestyle, I came back to the Bay Area and the first thing I did was rejoin Rhino Toastmasters! Public Speaking is a skill, and practice makes perfect. I guide members to keep pushing themselves when it comes to taking their public speaking skills to the next level. Page Edwards - VP of Membership I'm a Distinguished Toastmaster veteran with over 20 years of experience in public speaking. I'm an expert at my craft, but that wasn't always the case. We all have to start from somewhere. As VP of Membership, I make sure all newcomers feel welcomed and supported when starting their Toastmasters journey. Skylar Nguyen - VP of Public Relations I'm an environmental scientist in the transportation industry. I specialize in evaluating project impacts and prepare environmental documents to disclose them. As you can imagine, this requires me to speak in front of groups regularly. Rhino Toastmasters helped me to improve on my public speaking skills and confidence during team meetings and work presentations. As VP of Public Relations I make sure to documents and advertise all of the achievements and activities Rhino participates in! Whether that is winning speech contests or simply enjoying a dinner together as a club. Chris Zhao - Secretary With a background in business analytics and digital advertising, Chris works on consumer product strategy at Facebook. This career enables Chris to combine two of his passions - data and technology, to help identify and develop new products for billions of users around the world. In his free time, Sergey enjoys traveling around the world, studying foreign languages and going on bike rides along the beautiful California coast. ​Milo Piazza - Treasurer As a site reliability engineer, public speaking did not come easy to me. I found Rhino Toastmasters to improve my confidence when it comes to speaking in front of groups. Not only did I find an outlet to grow as a speaker, but I found a community where we all share the same goal. The skills I picked up at Rhino Toastmasters has continued to contribute to my success as transitioned into leadership roles at work. Dipayan Paul - Sergeant at Arms I'm an experienced Digital Design Engineer with experience in the digital communications industry currently at Apple. I regularly work cross functionally in my day to day. Rhino Toastmasters has helped me strengthen crucial public speaking skills that are required to get results for my work. Guest Registration What to Expect Sample Meeting Agenda Book Online Membership WHAT YOU GAIN Prepared Speeches   We typically have three prepared speakers who give speeches lasting 5-7 minutes. Each of these speakers are then evaluated so that everyone can learn from their experience. The Toastmasters  International Competent Communicator (CC) manual guides you through ten projects: speeches you prepare and deliver, each of which focuses on a different core skill.   Meeting Roles   Each meeting has a variety of roles that can be undertaken by members. Taking on such roles offers a great way to practice critical skills such as listening, time management and giving constructive feedback:    Timer: Because one of the purposes of Toastmasters is to ensure our members learn how to express a thought within a specific time, the Timer operates the timing device, records and reports the time used by each table topic speaker, speaker, and evaluator.  Grammarian: Presents a word of the week, gives the definition, uses it in a sentence and encourages meeting participants to use the word in their speech; also checks participants’ grammar.  Ah Counter: Tracks and reports distractions, such as audible pauses, filler words (e.g. “ah”, “uh”, “like”, etc.), and filler sounds used by meeting participants.  Videographer: records the prepared speeches and evaluation portion of the meeting, allowing speakers can go back and review their performance after giving their speeches. Evaluator: The purpose of the evaluator is to motivate the speaker to both continue speaking and to improve. The evaluator lets the speaker know what areas s/he has excelled in, and also offers a few constructive suggestions to help the speaker improve.   Table Topics   We also have a table topics session geared towards developing impromptu speaking skills. A random member will be called on to respond to an unexpected question. The member is expected to speak for at least 1 minute in response.   Leadership Roles ​ Our officers are elected twice a year by members.  Officers are crucial to our club's success and ensure  meetings run smoothly, reward achievers, and remind our community that success always in sight.   Officers are able to practice conflict resolution and problem solving, and naturally develop leadership skills such as project and team management.   What you gain MEMBERSHIP BASICS New Membership Process Rhino requires that you attend three meetings as a guest before you are eligible to apply.  Voting will take place on the last week of the month.  Guests are strongly encouraged to engage with members before and after the meeting.   New Member Eligibility Requirement Attend at least three meetings. Complete the New Membership Profile , and return it to the Vice President Membership (VPM). Complete the New TM Membership Application , and return it to the VPM.   Voting Week Procedures Vice President of Membership will send out online voting form to all members.  Members will vote for the nominees.  A simple majority (51%) is required to vote in a new member.
