We highly recommend participating in these annual events: RMA Spring/Summer Recital RMA Christmas Recital RMA Alumni’s Recital Halloween Costume Party Various Competitions and Festivals Russian Music Academy (RMA) Testing Official MTAC Certificate of Merit Testing Official ABRSM Testing Official NPPA Testing Recitals A recital is a special event in which students of all levels and classes perform for family and friends. We believe performing is just as important as learning how to play an instrument. We have two recitals every year: Spring/Summer Recital and Christmas Recital. See more photos in our Gallery “It is the challenge and the thrill we get seeing our students up on stage playing beautiful music!” Details of Russian Music Academy Recitals Each recital is divided into five time slots from which the student can choose. Dates, times and location are announced one month in advance. Each student can invite as many guests as they want to share their excitement with family and friends. Recital Etiquette Dress Code Recital Etiquette Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled recital. Do not walk, talk, or make noise during a performance. Silence your cell phones and take calls only outside of the concert hall. Participating students and their families are expected to remain for the duration of the entire recital, thereby providing ample audience and respect for all performers. Toddlers are not allowed in the concert hall! Dress Code T-Shirts, shorts, jeans, tennis shoes, slides, flip-flops, or any other casual wear is not allowed! Young ladies should wear a dress or skirt that sits at or below the knee. Do not wear jewelry (bracelets, rings, etc.) or nail polish. Flat shoes are recommended. Hair should be styled away from the face. Young men should wear a suit, but a turtleneck or buttoned shirt with dress pants is just as good. Dress shoes and dress socks are required. Competitions and Festivals Upon discretion of RMA teachers, students may be selected or encouraged to participate in various festivals and competitions, such as Los Angeles International Liszt Competition, San Jose International Piano Competition, Glendale Piano Competition, Junior Festival (NFMC), Keyboard Theme Festival (MTAC), Southern California Junior Bach Festival and more. We thoroughly prepare our students to participate in these events, so that almost all our students receive different honors and awards – from Honorable Mentions to First Place positions. Official Tests RMA Test: Students of Russian Music Academy will take our annual exam to determine their official level based on the California state standards. Testing will be held around March or April and is conducted by RMA’s teachers. MTAC Test: Music Teachers Association of California Certificate of Merit Testing. ABRSM Test: The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music Examinations. NPPA/ACM Test: Certificate of American College of Musicians. Students are welcome to be evaluated by either music organization. If you choose to be tested, Russian Music Academy is here to prepare the students. Year after year our students receive the highest scores on all tests. Many of our students skip 2-3 levels. Some are able to advance to level 5 within a year, while others are being advanced to level 7 in two years and so on. Also, as a courtesy, notify your teacher. Your lesson will then be rescheduled on a make-up date at no additional charge. Last-minute cancellations (less than 24 hours in advance), non-emergency cancellations, and “no shows” will not be rescheduled. If you are late to your scheduled class, you will not be allowed extra time because the next student is scheduled right away. If your teacher is late, you will receive the amount of time missed. Because our teachers are fully booked, a student who misses more than 3 classes is not guaranteed the original time slot upon return. Some children are interested in “playing by ear” and others want to compose their own music. We are always here to help every child achieve their desires, wishes, and dreams! Before a student enrolls at the Russian Music Academy, we provide a few steps to help you make the best choice for your child : STEP 1 FIRST Schedule an introduction at the school. RMA provides an overview of the school to parents and their children. We want families to understand the RMA philosophy that creates the environment for students to be successful in their musical endeavors. STEP 2 THEN Identify the students’ and parents’ goals, desires, and expectations; AFTER Determine if a young beginner (3-4 years old) is ready to start; ALSO Evaluate abilities of the beginner student; OR Check the true level of a student’s knowledge who studied previously elsewhere. STEP 3 NEXT Help choose what instrument to play. STEP 4 THEN Help choose what type of instrument to purchase (electric piano vs. upright, electric guitar vs. acoustic guitar, etc.). STEP 5 AFTER THAT Choose a convenient lesson schedule. We know families may have many more questions or concerns about their child’s musical journey. Lessons are offered once or twice a week for: 30 minutes 45 minutes 1 hour or more Students who would like to accelerate their progress are welcome to have multiple lessons per week. Tuition Piano • Violin • Cello • Guitar • Voice 30 min / $180 per month 45 min / $220 per month 1 hour / $260 per month Month-to-month tuition is due at the beginning of each month. Sign up Music Theory Classes/Lessons Music Theory Classes are offered in group and private sessions: 45 minutes Group Theory Class , taught by owner, either before or after the instrumental lesson. 15 or 30 minutes of Private Theory Lesson added to the lesson with the instrumental teacher. Theory classes are offered to anyone interested, whether or not the student is part of Russian Music Academy. The size and scope of the music school grew both in numbers of amazing students and caring teachers. Over the years, hundreds of students have walked through our doors, enhancing their music education, receiving guidance from our talented teachers, and most importantly, enjoying music. The strong connection that we have with our students and their families continues years after they have officially become alumni . We are extremely proud of the friendly and professional team we have cultivated at RMA. Currently, we enroll over two hundred students, and we are proud of our efforts in building a happy and healthy team. Those who connect with RMA will always remain a part of the RMA family. Founders Ms. Margarita Dolukhanova, known by most people at RMA as Ms. Rita, is an accomplished musician who began her music education in the Soviet Union (USSR) when she was six years old. Her passion and interest in music continued through her undergraduate and graduate work in Tashkent, the fourth largest city in the USSR. Ms. Rita received her Bachelors of Music degree from the Tashkent State Music College. Her accomplishments earned her a place at the Tashkent State Conservatory where she received her Master’s degree in Music. Upon completing her Master’s degree at the Conservatory, Ms. Rita joined the staff of the highly ranked Music Academy of Tashkent and worked as piano teacher and concertmaster. Soon after, she was elected as one of the chairpersons responsible for overseeing twenty five teachers in the Piano Department. As the head of the Piano Department, Ms. Rita worked with many talented students who continue to be part of her network of musicians. After settling in America in 2001, she became a teacher and general manager at Russian Music Academy. It was a natural transition for Ms. Rita to become the owner of RMA in 2007, since she had all necessary qualities of a leader to operate her own music school. Her excellent education, years of experience, organizational skills, ability to recruit teachers, who share the same great passion towards music, are very important aspects of Ms. Rita’s success. With over 30 years of teaching experience, in both piano and music theory, Ms. Rita has developed an integrated system, in which she blends the skills and knowledge she attained in Russia and the United States. She incorporates a progressive learning system that invites students to love, enjoy, and play music beginning from their first lesson at RMA. Ms. Rita has devoted all her life to educating and coaching young musicians who enter her school. She instills her great passion for music to students whom she respects and loves! “I try to surround myself with professionals who love their work, love the children, and provide instructions along with giving all their hearts to each student they teach.” Mr. Arkadiy Agalelov, known by most people at RMA as Mr. Alex, received his Bachelor’s degree in Tashkent Medical Electro-Technical College and his Master’s degree at Tashkent State University of World Languages. He graduated as a clarinetist from the Children’s School of Music and Arts No.1 (named after T. Sadykov) in Tashkent. Although Mr. Alex never planned to become a professional musician, he still has a never-ending love for music and holds a solid background in that field of study. In 2014 Alex joined Russian Music Academy as a co-owner and has become an invaluable member of the RMA family. Mr. Alex is the heart of the RMA community, where teachers, parents, and students are in constant communication with him about the running of RMA. Mr. Alex organizes all aspects of the school including the scheduling of classes, tuition payments, organizing recitals, certificate tests, etc. He communicates openly with everyone who enters the RMA office. In addition, Mr. Alex is responsible for creating a safe environment where students are surrounded by qualified educators who are passionate about music. Whenever Mr. Alex is not busy working with parents or teachers, he can definitely be found in classrooms, listening to students mastering new pieces. He likes to entertain those who wait for their lessons with puzzles, games, conversations, riddles, jokes, and much more. Mr. Alex loves children and they feel the same about him. When our students are around him, they are always happy, energized, and ready to learn. Mr. Alex believes that every child should have a chance to learn music because a music education is a way to instill a love of music that will carry on for the rest of students’ life! Teachers Teachers of RMA hold Master’s Degrees in Music from Russia’s top Conservatories/Universities. The majority of our teachers have more than 20 years of teaching experience in both Russia and the United States. All of them are able to adapt their instructions to fit the needs of each student’s individual learning style. Our teachers have unique personalities that accompany their own teaching style; however, they have a unifying teaching philosophy. Our teachers understand that every child is unique and each student is here with different goals and expectations. Every teacher aims to help students to reach their full potential. Learning music is about building a strong professional relationship with your teacher. RMA will match students with a teacher that he/she is most compatible with. That is why our students work with the same teacher for many years. Moreover, our teachers work closely with parents, so they can help their children practice effectively in between lessons, and so that they can track their children’s progress. Our teachers support and respect each other’s work. They often work in partnership with each other when students learn pieces of music written for different instruments: for example, trio for violin, cello, and piano or duet for voice and guitar. We believe that the key to our success is teamwork between the principals, teachers, parents, and students. In addition to teaching the essentials of music, our teachers strive to inspire growth and passion in their students. You do not have to be a professional musician! To learn music is not only about playing, singing or composing, but also about love, compassion, gentleness. It is about enjoying and recognizing the beauty in the world!
