What is a veterinary specialist? In veterinary medicine, as in human medicine, some doctors choose to specialize in an area of interest. A veterinary specialist is a veterinarian who has undergone years of advanced education and training in a certain field or discipline and earned board certification. To earn the designation of “board-certified specialist” veterinarians must attend undergraduate school, attend veterinary school, complete an internship (1-2 years), and complete a residency (2-4 years) in their chosen field. These residency programs require veterinarians to meet specific training and caseload requirements, perform research in their specialty field, and have that research published. They must also pass a set of rigorous examinations administered by the board of the specialty college. It is only after the completion of all prior steps does a veterinarian earn the title of “Veterinary Diplomate” and become a board-certified veterinary specialist. Why am I being referred to a board-certified specialist for my pet’s care? At SAGE, we speak of a “triad” of caregivers: you, your pet’s primary veterinarian, and our veterinary specialist. You and your primary veterinarian are the first line of care in your pet’s health and well-being. In some complex cases, your primary veterinarian may refer your pet to a specialist who has the advanced training, expertise, and equipment needed to continue to provide the best possible care for your pet. When a referral is indicated, your primary veterinarian will discuss this process with you and then provide us with all pertinent information regarding your pet’s history and current medical problem. Often they will call one of our specialists to discuss the case being referred. They may also fax or email medical records to us, send your pet’s imaging studies, or even ask you to bring x-rays or radiographs to your pet’s consultation. To maintain the triad of care, our specialists will keep you and your primary veterinarian informed of your pet’s progress after your initial consultation and any subsequent appointments. This continuity between specialist and primary veterinarian ensures the best possible outcome for your pet. What should I expect from my consultation with a board-certified specialist? Our specialist will review medical records from your primary veterinarian, as well as any x-rays/radiographs or lab results sent prior to your appointment. When you bring your pet in for the consultation, you will be asked to provide a thorough history of your pet’s medical problem. Your consulting specialist will also perform a physical examination on your pet. After reviewing all of this information, your specialist will discuss a treatment plan with you, which could involve further diagnostic tests, a surgical recommendation, and/or detailed home-care instructions. After you approve a treatment plan, your doctor will create a detailed financial estimate for your pet’s care. Your specialist can sometimes perform diagnostic tests or procedures the day of your consultation, so in general we request that you have your pet fast for the appointment. Diabetic patients, however, should never be fasted unless specifically requested to do so by the doctor or nursing staff. Please call us before your consultation if you have any questions about withholding food from your pet. Why does my pet need to be fasted before the appointment? Certain procedures that your SAGE medical team may recommend warrant fasting to minimize complications such as vomiting, regurgitation, or pneumonia. Fasting Recommendations Your pet has been asked to fast prior to your visit. Certain procedures that your SAGE medical team may recommend warrant fasting to minimize complications such as vomiting, regurgitation, or pneumonia. Withholding Food Patients over 16 weeks of age and all adults: Food should be withheld at least 6 hours (8 hours for brachycephalic breeds such as Bulldogs, Pugs, Persians, French Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, etc.). For morning appointments before 12 pm: No food after midnight. For afternoon appointments after 12 pm: No food after 6 am. Pediatric patients (6-16 weeks of age): Feed a small meal 2-4 hours before anesthesia and surgery. Food should not be withheld for longer than 4 hours in your puppy or kitten as they do not have adequate energy reserves. Special considerations (Diabetics, patients with insulinoma, endoscopy/colonoscopy patients, special laboratory testing, or other special circumstances): Please call your SAGE medical team for instructions if you have not heard from them directly regarding fasting. There may be special instructions regarding longer or shorter fasting and changes in access to water. Withholding Water For any patient : Water can be given up to the time of your pet’s appointment, unless instructed otherwise by the SAGE team. Please contact your SAGE medical team if you have any questions or concerns regarding these instructions. When do specialty medicine diagnostics or medical procedures take place? Most specialty doctors have either consultation and recheck appointments scheduled in the mornings and medical and surgical procedures scheduled in the afternoons, or vice versa. While we strive to accommodate our clients’ and patients’ needs the same day as their consultation appointment, there may be times when an unforeseen urgent patient care issue occurs in the hospital resulting in rescheduling of stable patient procedures. We will update you if your pet’s procedure is delayed and work with you to provide continued care during the delay. What are my options for medical care? The specialty doctors at SAGE include specialists in integrative medicine, cardiology, internal medicine, neurology, surgery and oncology and work during the daytime, Monday through Saturday. Our emergency and critical care team work closely with the specialists, and they are scheduled to be at SAGE 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Emergency FAQs Can you give me medical advice for my pet over the phone? We cannot give specific medical advice for your pet without an exam by our doctors. If you are not sure if you should have your pet seen by a doctor, please contact us for us to discuss with you. My pet just ate something potentially poisonous, what do I do? If you are concerned that your pet may have ingested a possible toxin, we recommend calling the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 for specific information about the potential toxin. There is a nominal fee for their services, payable by credit card. If Poison Control instructs you to bring your pet to the hospital for treatment, they will provide you with a case number that will allow our veterinarians to contact them for further information about treatment. Please bring this case number with you to the hospital. What if my pet has an emergency situation? Emergency services are available at all of our facilities, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We are open during all major holidays. For some animals — like those with certain health conditions, such as obesity, liver or kidney disease, or digestive issues — diet plays an even more critical role in their overall health. In these situations, your veterinarian may prescribe a therapeutic diet. Therapeutic diets are formulated to meet specific pet health needs, and the nutritional components of these diets vary based on the condition they are meant to treat. If your pet has been prescribed a therapeutic diet as a part of a treatment plan, it is important to follow your veterinarian’s recommendation consistently to achieve the best outcome. Preventatives and Pet Health Fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes can cause problems for your pet in any season. Consistently protecting them against these pests, even in cooler months, is the best way to keep your pet safe from the troublesome and costly issues these parasites can cause — allergic dermatitis, tapeworms, Lyme disease, heartworm, and more. Your veterinarian will recommend the best flea, tick, and heartworm preventative for your pet. To ensure complete protection, be sure to administer the medication consistently as directed. Osteoarthritis and Continuous Pain Management If your dog or cat has been diagnosed with osteoarthritis, continuous pain management is likely to be a critical part of their treatment plan. The progressive nature of osteoarthritis means that without proper pain management, your pet’s pain and muscle condition are likely to worsen over time. To improve their quality of life, your veterinarian will work with you to assess your pet’s level of discomfort and develop an appropriate treatment plan to maintain mobility. AutoShip Therapeutic diets work best when they are given consistently as directed. AutoShip is a simple tool you can use via our online store to make it easier to follow your veterinarian’s treatment plan. This convenient option means the product is automatically delivered to your home at your desired frequency. You never have to worry about missing a feeding because you’ve unexpectedly run out, and you’ll avoid last-minute trips to the store to purchase a bag of food. This service is offered in our Campbell , Concord , Dublin , Redwood City and San Francisco locations. Just like humans, pets can experience illnesses and injuries that go beyond an emergency and into the realm of critical care. And, just as we see in human medicine, addressing these illnesses and injuries requires advanced training, equipment, and expertise. Critical care in veterinary medicine is the continuous support and monitoring of an animal’s needs when they are very sick or injured. Those needs can include oxygen delivery, IV fluids of many types, blood or plasma transfusions, surgery, and, of course, TLC. Our Emergency and Critical Care teams are comprised of seasoned doctors who are dedicated to the field of emergency medicine. These specialists, or “Criticalists,” use specialized treatments in complex cases, and their training and expertise help to ensure the best possible outcome. When pet owners are faced with a severe or complex illness or injury, they can turn to SAGE Veterinary Centers 24/7, 365 days a year. We staff our CCU around the clock with seasoned veterinarians and technicians who specialize in meeting the unique needs of critical care patients. This means pets in the CCU are monitored and cared for 24 hours a day, every day. Please call us at your chosen facility to schedule an appointment Our Client Service Coordinators (CSCs) will help you find the best date and time for your appointment and answer any questions you may have. If necessary, they will also help obtain your pet’s medical record from your primary veterinarian, if you have one. 3. Items to Bring Your pet’s medical records to include any x-rays/radiographs and labwork. You may have your primary veterinarian fax these to us ahead of your appointment. Medication, in its original container, that your pet is–or was–taking and your pharmacy’s name and phone number. It is helpful for us to double-check doses and types of medications with your medical records. Please bring any special diet needs if your pet may be spending the night. This might occur if scheduled for surgery or other diagnostics and therapies requiring hospitalization. We may also want to adjust feeding instructions for very young animals, certain toy breeds, and patients on certain medications for the heart or for seizures. You can check in with us or with your family veterinarian if your pet falls into one of these groups. Please bring any supplements you routinely give to your pet. 4. Prepare Write down your concerns, questions and observations of your pet, to bring with you to your appointment. If the appointment is for an endoscopy or a colonoscopy, or for electrochemotherapy or surgery, your pet will need to have fasted. Please click the fasting recommendations button below for more information on how to prepare your pet accordingly. Fasting Recommendations If your pet has been asked to fast prior to your visit. Certain procedures that your SAGE medical team may recommend warrant fasting to minimize complications such as vomiting, regurgitation, or pneumonia. Withholding Food Patients over 16 weeks of age and all adults: Please do not feed your pet within 12 hours of their appointment. For more information regarding fasting, please view our brochure here > You can view the forms in PDF format by downloading the free Adobe Acrobat reader . 5. At time of appointment If your appointment is a consultation, please arrive 15 minutes early for your appointment. Our CSCs will greet you upon arrival. If you need assistance with bringing your pet into the facility, please check in at the front desk first and we will assist you with bringing your pet in from your vehicle. We ask that you have your dog either leashed or in a carrier while waiting in the lobby and all cats must be in a carrier. This is for the safety of all of the patients and clients. You and your pet will be greeted by one of our clinical staff members to discuss and obtain information and bring you to an exam room prior to meeting with the doctor. If this is your initial visit, the doctor will answer your questions and provide options and a recommended course of treatment, taking into consideration what you would like to do for your pet. Very often, we care for your pet while you wait. We offer a comfortable lobby area with refreshments, reading material and free wi-fi for your convenience. If the treatment is over a period of time, you may be asked to leave your pet in our care. We’ll ask for your contact information and keep you informed of your pet’s progress. 6. Payment We will present you with a treatment plan and an estimate for your pet’s care. We will ask you to approve and sign the estimate before we start treatment. An initial payment is required at the time of patient admission. The initial payment will be the low end of the estimate of services. Payment in full is required when your pet is released. We accept cash, check, and all major credit cards. Please bring your driver’s license for identification and security purposes. We accept 3rd party payment through Care Credit and ScratchPay . Our annual Symposium also offers a variety of RACE-approved lectures and workshops. For more information, please click here . Will SAGE take my client away from me? No, SAGE wants to partner and team up with our primary veterinarians, not take away their business. SAGE supports our primary vets by ensuring our communication with you and your client is clear in that we are an extension of care and services. We purposely do not offer standard wellness plans, vaccination appointments, flea preventatives, straight forward spays or neuters, etc. Our focus is on specialized and emergency care. How to Facilitate the Treatment of Injection Site Sarcomas (ISS) in Cats What is a feline injection site sarcoma? Feline injection site sarcomas are tumors that can develop at sites of injections. Certain vaccines have been implicated as being more likely to cause this cancer, but various non-vaccine injections have been implicated as well. It has been estimated that about 1 in 10,000 vaccinations results in the development of these tumors in cats. What is the biological behavior of ISS? ISS are locally invasive tumors that penetrate through surrounding tissue with tumor “roots”. These “roots” can extend further out than what can be seen or felt on palpation. These tumors have about a 20-25% chance for metastasis in general, but the metastatic potential for each individual tumor will vary depending on its grade. How is ISS treated? The treatment of each ISS will depend on the size and location of the tumor, and the health of the patient. It is common that a combination of treatments such as surgery, radiation therapy, electrochemotherapy, or chemotherapy may be recommended for patients with this disease. What is the prognosis for cats with ISS? The prognosis for cats with ISS varies depending on many factors, including the size, location, grade of the tumor, and the treatment modalities chosen to treat it. An oncologist can help better assess the prognosis of an individual depending on these factors. How can the risk for developing ISS be reduced? Vaccinations are extremely important in preventing certain infectious diseases, some of which can be deadly. The answer is not to stop administering vaccinations since that would potentially allow for outbreaks of infectious diseases in cats and can be a public health concern for deadly diseases like rabies. Instead, you should consult with your primary veterinarian about which vaccinations are indicated for your cat and which are less likely necessary. Besides only administering vaccines that are thought to be necessary for each individual, cat owners should monitor vaccination sites for the development of lumps and nodules. Nodules that form at injection sites may be an inflammatory reaction that may resolve on their own, but they should all be evaluated by a veterinarian to rule out an ISS. What are indications for radiation therapy? Indications for radiation therapy (RT) include the primary treatment of specific tumor types, such as nasal tumors and brain tumors, adjuvant treatment of incompletely excised tumors, and palliation to improve quality of life for patients with non-resectable or advanced cancers. Uses for Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) In August 2017, SAGE Centers will become the first veterinary hospital in the United States to use The Halcyon™ system, Varian’s newest cancer treatment device, to deliver stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) along with the more traditional forms of radiation therapy. We will provide this advanced form of cancer treatment at our Campbell facility through our collaboration with PetCure Oncology. Primary treatment for specific tumor types Indications for the use of external beam radiation therapy for the primary treatment of tumors has expanded significantly with the emergence of SRS for pets. Stereotactic radiation, delivered with VMAT technology and on-board imaging, offers an unprecedented ability to manipulate dose distribution. With advanced treatment-planning software and a board-certified radiation oncologist, our cancer patients benefit from customized treatment plans and sub-millimeter precision that enable the delivery of high-dose radiation directly to the tumor with minimum radiation exposure to the surrounding healthy anatomy. This technology allows us to safely and effectively use radiation to treat tumors in complex anatomic localizations, some of which used to be considered poor candidates for radiation. Other RT Options When SRS is not an option, other forms of RT can be considered. Conventionally Fractionated Radiation Therapy (CFRT), or Definitive Radiation Therapy CFRT (has also been called Definitive Radiation Therapy) entails 16 to 21 daily treatments given at lower doses per fraction. This form of therapy is often used for incompletely or narrowly excised tumors that have a high chance for recurrence if left untreated. Common incompletely excised tumors treated with CFRT include feline injection site sarcomas, mast cell tumors, and canine soft tissue sarcomas. CFRT can also be used to primarily treat some tumors such as nasal tumors and brain tumors. Local tumor recurrence or tumor progression can be delayed by months to years with CFRT, and a local cure may be obtained in many instances. Palliation Palliative RT is most frequently recommended for patients with advanced cancers or tumors that cannot be resected. The aim of palliative RT is to shrink the tumor temporarily and provide relief of pain and discomfort associated with the tumor. Typically, between 2 to 6 fractions are administered, as opposed to the 16 to 21 fractions given for CFRT. This allows for milder side effects while still treating the t Privacy Policy | SAGE Veterinary Centers Skip to Primary Content Give Us a Call Emergency Emergency Contact Us Contact Us Who We Are About Us Giving Back Share Your Story Our Team - Campbell Our Team - Concord Our Team - Dublin Our Team - Redwood City Our Team - San Francisco Services View all Services Campbell Services Concord Services Dublin Services Redwood City Services San Francisco Services For Pet Owners For Pet Owners Self-Service Portal Appointment Information Online Pharmacy Grief Support Pet Owner FAQs For Veterinarians For Veterinarians E-Learning Portal Clinical Trials Continuing Education Request Records Veterinarian FAQs Careers Give Us a Call Emergency Contact Us SAGE Veterinary Centers Privacy Statement USA Last Updated: June 1, 2024 National Veterinary Associates (“NVA”) respects your privacy and is committed to protecting your personal information. Please call one of our primary veterinarians if your pet is experiencing an emergency during regular office hours. If they feel that a referral to one of our specialists is warranted, or that your pet should be seen at SAGE immediately, they will call the closest facility directly and set up the patient as an immediate referral. Regardless of the time of day, you should call ahead when possible, so our team can begin to prepare for your arrival. What is an Emergency? SAGE Emergency is available 24/7, including holidays to help your pet. Any of the following are reasons to call or come in to see us: Changes to oral gum color Difficulty breathing Allergic reaction (hives, facial swelling, severe itching or red eyes) Exposure to any chemicals Ingestion of foreign material Weakness/changes in alertness Seizures, loss of balance, and inability to walk Trembling or shaking Pain, discomfort, or lameness Straining to urinate Distended or bloated abdomen Persistent vomiting, diarrhea, or non-productive retching Ingestion of toxins, poisonous plants, or household medications Difficulty delivering kittens or puppies Exposure to high temperatures Bleeding Hit by car Fall from height Bite wounds from other animals Broken bones Behavior changes or actions that just don’t feel right in your mind Why SAGE in an Emergency? SAGE Veterinary Centers is a multi-location practice dedicated to providing the highest level of care. Our hospitals include more than 80 highly-trained veterinarians and a team of knowledgeable, compassionate support staff. Our emergency team is comprised of seasoned doctors who are dedicated to the field of emergency medicine. Most of our Emergency veterinarians have interned for an additional year after veterinary school, and several have completed three-year residencies and are board-certified specialists in Emergency and Critical Care. Our emergency services are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A trip to the ER can be routine or involved. Often problems can be solved in one visit and your pet can return home. We treat many illnesses that require routine testing and medications. With a good home care plan set in place by our team, you will be fine to leave with your pet and recheck with your primary veterinarian in a few days. When the problem is more involved, and especially if life-threatening, our critical care equipment and expertise come into play. Critical care is the continuous support and monitoring of the animal’s needs. Those needs can include oxygen delivery, IV fluids, blood or plasma transfusions, surgery, nutritional delivery and, of course, TLC. Urgent Care for Minor Illnesses SAGE also offers same-day Urgent Care services at our Redwood City hospital for concerning, but not critical health issues. Our Urgent Care department helps us reduce wait times for patients, and provides our clients with added convenience. 🐾 Common causes for visits to the emergency room include persistent vomiting or diarrhea, ingestion of chemicals or toxins, and trauma, such as being hit by a car. Don’t hesitate to see a veterinarian if you suspect your pet is in distress. Urgent Care Examples Urgent Care services will provide same-day appointments for clients who are seeking immediate care for non-emergency issues. Here are some examples of Urgent Care appointments: Coughing or sneezing Superficial cuts or wounds Minor vomiting or diarrhea Weakness or changes in alertness Loss of appetite Trembling or shaking Discomfort or mild lameness Tick removal Ear and skin infections Irritated or red eyes Any signs that are troubling to you or your pet In human medicine, urgent care provides a convenient way for patients to be seen for problems that may not warrant a trip to the ER. SAGE’s Urgent Care department fills the same need for your pet. A patient experiencing an emergency never needs an appointment to be seen. We practice triage, which is the process of sorting patients based on the severity of their condition. Sometimes this means we must attend to animals not in their order of arrival, but in their order of need. ASPCA Poison Control The ASPCA Poison Control Hotline is a resource for pet owners who worry their pet has ingested something that could be toxic. They have a major database of known toxins, their effects, and how they should be treated. Please note there is a fee for their consultation by phone, at (888) 426-4435 . Pet Poison Helpline The Pet Poison Helpline also provides 24-hour pet poison control services. Please note there is a fee for their consultation by phone, at (888) 426-4435 . Frequently Asked Questions What is the difference between Urgent Care and Emergency Care? The difference between Urgent Care and the Emergency Room is the severity of the health problem. If the condition is life-threatening, go to the Emergency Room. If the condition is a minor illness or injury, take advantage of the same-day convenience of setting an appointment with our Urgent Care department. How long will I have to wait to be seen if it is an emergency? Upon arrival, a veterinary technician will triage your pet. The technician will assess the degree of urgency and take a brief history. They will evaluate your pet’s breathing patterns and heart rhythm, and will check for obvious signs of trauma, fractures, or injuries. The seriousness of your pet’s medical condition will determine how quickly a doctor will meet with you. A patient that arrives after you may be seen first due to the nature of their condition. Our goal is to provide the best possible care and treatment for your pet as quickly as we can.
