The San Andreas Merchants Association (SAM) was formed in 1994 to support its members and help mobilize resources for the benefit of the community. Since its creation, SAM has spearheaded numerous projects aimed at enhancing the quality of life in San Andreas. Some notable achievements are listed below. Underground Wiring In 1998, SAM undertook a project to dramatically improve the appearance of San Andreas by successfully seeking Title 20 funds to replace the maze of overhead wires over St. Charles/Hwy 49. The underground wiring project was an incredible aesthetic improvement. SAM continues to lobby for the completion of Phase 2, burying the remaining lines from Main St. to Gold Oak Rd. Holiday Decorations For decades, SAM has been decorating San Andreas for the holidays. In 2023, SAM held a successful corporate sponsorship drive to raise funds for new holiday decorations for San Andreas. With the help of sponsors like Mark Twain Medical Center/ Dignity Health, Calaveras Arts Council, and the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors, SAM purchased brand new holiday banners for the lamp posts on St. Charles/Hwy 49, a new skyline garland for historic Main St., and bows and garland for the entrance to the government center. Gateway Monuments Working with our local 4-H group and community volunteers, SAM helped to redesign and construct a new Welcome to San Andreas monument at the end of town, welcoming visitors and enhancing civic pride. Community Grants In 2007, SAM applied for and received a San Andreas Rural Livable Mobility Grant through the Calaveras Council of Governments. SAM continues to work with local governments to implement elements of the plan. Other past projects include: Trash and Recycling Bins on St. Charles/Hwy 49 : Promoting cleanliness and sustainability. Huberty Building Mural Project The Calaveras Board of Supervisors approved SAM's proposed update to the Huberty Building Mural in a 5-0 vote. SAM is currently fundraising for the mural project and working with the county regarding to finalize the details of the project. Caroling & Candy Canes on Main 2025 Join us on Historic Main St. San Andreas as we kick off the holidays with caroling, warming fires, food vendors, tree lighting, live music and more! Caltrans Complete Streets Project Coming to San Andreas On August 26, 2025 the Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 to preserve the landscaping portion of the Complete Streets project for San Andreas. A victory of San Andreas! Scheduled to commence construction in 2025, this Caltrans improvement project plans to upgrade St. Charles / Hwy. 49 from Mountain Ranch Rd. to Gold Oak Rd. Project goals include slowing traffic through San Andreas, correcting the crown in the roadway, improving sidewalks for pedestrians, increasing crosswalk safety, adding landscaping for beautification and shade, and adding bike lanes. Caltrans has assured SAM that all businesses will be able to operate and have access during construction and every effort will be made to ease the traffic and parking burdens for merchants and their customers. We look forward to this new face lift for San Andreas as we continue our efforts to revitalize the downtown area of this great community. SAM is in regular communication with Caltrans project directors, please contact us if you have questions or concerns. New hotel project proposed for San Andreas St. Charles Hospitality has submitted a project proposal to construct a new Fairfield by Marriott hotel in San Andreas. While this new 80 room hotel project, that includes a restaurant on the first floor, has prompted some concerns from residents about traffic and design aesthetic, the positive impact that a new large scale business like this would have on local employment opportunities, commerce, and revenue for surrounding merchants in San Andreas is hard to ignore. St. Charles Hospitality has voiced their support for the efforts of the San Andreas Merchants Association and the revitalization of San Andreas and its historic district. It is our hope that this new commercial project continues to energize the business district in San Andreas and brings opportunity and benefits for local residents and business owners alike. The San Andreas Merchants is now offering a $500 scholarship for business majors and future entrepreneurs. Contact us for more information.
