Retainers are an important part of the Invisalign process that prevents your teeth from drifting out of alignment. There are multiple forms of retainers, but the Invisalign Vivera™ retainer is traditionally used after Invisalign treatment. These clear retainers are made of the same premium-grade SmartTrack™ material as the aligners themselves, so you'll get the same comfort, convenience, and effectiveness from the retention stage as the treatment stage. They are made of thicker material, designed to last for years without breaking, cracking, or losing their shape. This guide has everything you need to know about post-Invisalign retainers. Read on to learn all about Vivera™ retainers and how they protect your smile for years to come! What Are Invisalign Retainers? Invisalign Vivera™ retainers are clear, plastic retainers used to protect the results of Invisalign treatment. They look like Invisalign aligners, and are made of the same premium-grade SmartTrack™ plastic, but they are designed to keep teeth in place, not move them. They are thicker than Invisalign aligners, because they are designed for long-term use: a single set can last for several years when cared for properly. Vivera™ retainers are sparklingly clear, easy to clean, and come in a set with multiple back-ups, so you can trade them out when they stretch, break, or get lost. They're built to be up to 30% more durable than other clear retainers. In some cases, a different form of retainer may be used, rather than a Vivera™ retainer. Some patients, for instance, prefer a permanent retainer for its “get it and forget it” advantages. But many patients prefer the Vivera™ retainer; including many traditional braces patients. Talk with your orthodontist about which retainer is right for you. Why Do You Need Retainers? You need to retainers because, without them, your teeth will move back out of alignment. This is not because your orthodontist did a bad job with the Invisalign: it's because your teeth spent many years in their incorrect positions, and it takes a long time to “convince them” to stay put! Retainers are used for the retention phase of treatment: they keep the results of your treatment in place, so they teeth don’t shift back. For the first 6 months to a year after treatment, you'll wear them full-time, and then you can switch to wearing them a few nights a week. Regular nightly wear for life will help prevent the natural tendency of teeth to shift over time. Why Vivera™ Invisalign Retainers Are Used Post-Treatment: Protect the gains made by your Invisalign treatment Keep your teeth from shifting back Ensure your bite stays healthy and properly aligned Prevent gaps from appearing between your teeth Do I Have to Wear Retainers After My Treatment is Over? Yes, retainers are an important and necessary part of your Invisalign treatment. Without retainers, your teeth will shift back out of alignment, and the results of your treatment will be impacted. Without retention, your teeth may shift back out of alignment entirely, requiring another round of orthodontic care to correct. Don't waste the investment you made on Invisalign by skipping out on your retainers. Luckily, Invisalign Vivera™ retainers are extremely comfortable and convenient, and after the first 3-6 months need to be worn only at night several nights a week. Your Vivera™ retainers come as a series of 4 sets, top and bottom (a total of 8 retainers), so you'll have backups whenever you need them. Nightly wear will become an easy routine, and your smile will stay healthy and shining for years to come. How Much Do Invisalign Retainers Cost? Depending on where you purchase your Vivera™ Invisalign retainers, they will cost between $600 and $1,200. However, this includes 4 sets of top-and-bottom retainers (8 retainers total), so you're actually paying less per retainer than other brands that provide only a single set. And because you will wear your retainers nightly for life, if possible, you will need new sets regularly. Replacement or re-stocking Vivera™ retainers is easy: your orthodontist keeps your digital records on file, and they'll put a new order into Invisalign to print you a new set of retainers. No putty molds or complicated bonding; your new retainers can even be mailed to you at home, saving you a trip to the office! How Do I Clean My Invisalign Retainers? leaning your Invisalign aligners (or trays) is easy and important: there are several methods to brush, rinse, or soak your aligners to keep them sparkling clean and fresh. Keeping your aligners clean is an important part of your Invisalign treatment. While your orthodontist will design the treatment to properly align your teeth, you'll be the one actually wearing the aligners. Proper compliance is critical to achieving a healthy, happy smile with Invisalign clear braces! There are various methods to clean your Invisalign aligners – you don't have to stick to one method. In fact, the best way to protect your aligners is to brush them, rinse them, and soak them regularly. Methods for Cleaning Your Invisalign Aligners Brush your Aligners with a Soft-Bristled Toothbrush and Dish Soap Using a separate toothbrush than your personal toothbrush, gently brush the aligners inside and out with a generic dish soap. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush, put a pea-sized amount of dish soap on the toothbrush, run under water, and gently brush the entire aligner. Rinse thoroughly under water before putting back in your mouth. Don't use toothpaste: the abrasive materials in toothpaste can scratch the surface of the aligners. And try to avoid very brightly-colored soaps with a lot of dye in them: this can potentially stain the aligners. If you don't have dish soap available, you can use hand soap, or simply brush the aligners with water. Soak Your Aligners in Denture Cleaner Denture cleaner is sold over the counter at your local pharmacy and works well as a soaking solution for Invisalign. Polident is a popular and effective brand of denture cleaner. Simply soak both aligners in denture cleaner for about 15 minutes and rinse thoroughly before use. Soak Your Aligners in Invisalign Cleaning Crystals Invisalign Cleaning Crystals  are a cleaning brand specifically designed by Invisalign to clean their clear aligners. Dissolve an individual packet of crystals into a glass of water and soak your aligners for 15 minutes. Rinse before putting back in your mouth. Invisalign cleaning crystals are a little pricier than the other options mentioned, but they are specifically designed to remove plaque and bacteria from your aligners, for the highest-quality clean. Use EverSmile® WhiteFoam EverSmile® WhiteFoam is a bacteria-killing, breath-freshening foam that you can apply directly into your aligners. With no brushing or soaking required, it's a good on-the-go solution to keep your aligners clean throughout the day. The foam gently whitens your teeth and your attachments, as well as whitening beneath the attachments to prevent discoloration. And its mint flavor makes WhiteFoam a great breath freshener any time. You can get WhiteFoam from your orthodontist or order online. If you need to enhance your smile, San Francisco Cosmetic Dentist Y. Danielle Marquis, DDS, MPH is here to help! Restoring the Beauty and Function of Teeth Some cosmetic procedures, such as teeth whitening , are purely for improving a smile’s beauty. However, many other cosmetic procedures Dr. Marquis provides help rebuild the function of your teeth while improving their aesthetics as well. Composite fillings are an excellent example of the restoration use of cosmetic dentistry. These fillings reconstruct areas of a tooth that have been lost to decay while matching the color of the restored tooth. The result is a tooth that looks and functions as well as it did before decay occurred. Similarly, using dental porcelain to construct crowns and other restorations helps strengthen teeth while keeping them beautiful. Our San Francisco dentist can help you receive these cosmetic dental restorations. Discreet Teeth Straightening Cosmetic dentistry can also help patients receive a straighter smile. Often, if a patient had not previously received orthodontic treatment because their alignment needs were mild, or if they had braces but their teeth have since tried to shift back into their original position, they may look into having their smile straightened. Straight teeth are not only easier to clean, but also tend to look more appealing. However, traditional orthodontic treatments utilize large, noticeable brackets and wires; for adult patients and some teens, the discomfort and lack of discretion can be an obstacle to receiving straighter teeth. Our San Francisco dentist has a solution through Invisalign® . A cosmetic alternative to traditional orthodontics, this system utilizes clear aligners to help straighten teeth instead of brackets and wires. Often, our patients who use Invisalign® find it much more comfortable and much less noticeable than traditional braces. The treatment can also be much shorter than metal braces, as some Invisalign patients have completed their treatment in one year rather than two. Through this cosmetic dentistry alternative to standard orthodontics, patients can receive their best smile. Smile With Confidence As dental professionals it is our priority to provide quality dental care you can trust. Onlays can be utilized to  conservatively  repair teeth that have large defective fillings or have been damaged by decay or trauma.  Onlays are an ideal alternative to crowns (caps) because less tooth structure is removed in the preparation of onlays.   Onlays  are essentially identical to  inlays  with the exception that one or more of the chewing cusps have also been affected and need to be included in the restoration. As with most dental restorations, onlays are not always permanent and may someday require replacement.  They are highly durable and will last many years, giving you a beautiful long-lasting smile. Reasons for onlay restorations: Broken or fractured teeth. Cosmetic enhancement. Decayed teeth. Fractured fillings. Large fillings. What does getting an onlay involve? An onlay procedure usually requires two appointments.  Your first appointment will include taking several highly accurate impressions (molds) that will be used to create your custom onlay and a temporary restoration. While the tooth is numb, the dentist will remove any decay and/or old filling materials.  The space will then be thoroughly cleaned and carefully prepared, shaping the surface to properly fit an onlay restoration.  A temporary filling will be applied to protect the tooth while your onlay is made by a dental laboratory. At your second appointment, your new onlay will be carefully and precisely cemented into place.  A few adjustments may be necessary to ensure a proper fit and that your bite is comfortable. You will receive care instruction at the conclusion of your treatment.  Good oral hygiene practices, a proper diet, and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new onlay. Veneers can completely reshape your teeth and smile.  They can often be alternatives to crowns and the ideal solution in treating many dental conditions. As with most dental restorations, veneers are not permanent and may someday need replacement.  They are very durable and will last many years, giving you a beautiful, long-lasting smile. Reasons for porcelain veneers: Cosmetically creating a uniform, white, beautiful smile Crooked teeth Misshapen teeth Severely discolored or stained teeth Teeth that are too small or large Unwanted or uneven spaces Worn or chipped teeth What does getting porcelain veneers involve? Getting veneers usually requires two visits to complete the process, with little or no anesthesia required during the procedure.  The teeth are prepared by lightly buffing and shaping the surface to allow for the thickness of the veneer.  The dentist takes a mold or impression of the teeth, and you and the dentist choose the shading. On the second visit, the teeth will be cleansed with special liquids to achieve a durable bond. Bonding cement is then placed between the tooth and veneer, and a light beam is used to harden and set the bond. You will receive care instructions for veneers.  Proper brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new veneers. Giving our patients’ teeth a brighter shade of white is one of the more frequent concerns our dentist treats. San Francisco Dental Office provides teeth whitening to San Francisco and all the surrounding communities. Everyone’s smile is different. Some people go without whitening because their teeth are too sensitive, and others think they need whitening when they would benefit from porcelain veneers. Your personal cosmetic dental needs will be different than any of our other patients’ goals. As a provider of quality dental services, Dr. Marquis strives to understand you and your dental concerns closely. The excellence of your whitening treatment plan is reinforced by how our dentist customizes your aesthetic care to match your precise situation. Dr. Marquis listens when you bring up concerns regarding sensitivity or if you want to have your teeth reshaped as well as whitened. She will also be able to determine if your teeth need brightening because of internal health concerns or due to external particles from what you eat and drink. Your fully customized treatment plan is based on how each of these factors applies explicitly to your teeth. The whitening method used, as well as if veneers or other cosmetic dental treatments necessary, will be carefully planned out to meet these exact needs, allowing you to receive a higher quality of care. Developing the Brightness of Your Smile Once Dr. Marquis knows what the best course of action is for giving you a brighter smile, she begins your teeth whitening treatment. There are many types of filling materials available, each with their own advantages and disadvantages.  You and your dentist can discuss the best options for restoring your teeth.  Composite fillings, along with silver amalgam fillings, are the most widely used today.  Because composite fillings are tooth colored, they can be closely matched to the color of existing teeth, and are more aesthetically suited for use in front teeth or more visible areas of the mouth. As with most dental restorations , composite fillings are not permanent and may someday have to be replaced.  They are very durable and will last many years, giving you a long-lasting, beautiful smile. Reasons for composite fillings: Chipped teeth. Closing space between two teeth. Cracked or broken teeth. Decayed teeth. Worn teeth. How are composite fillings placed? Composite fillings are usually placed in one appointment.  While the tooth is numb, your dentist will remove decay as needed.  The space will then be thoroughly cleaned and carefully prepared before the new filling is placed.  If the decay was near the nerve of the tooth, a special medication will be applied for added protection.  The composite filling will then be precisely placed, shaped, and polished, restoring your tooth to its original shape and function. It is normal to experience sensitivity to hot and cold when composite fillings are first placed, however this will subside shortly after your tooth acclimates to the new filling. You will be given care instructions at the conclusion of your treatment.  Good oral hygiene practices, eating habits, and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new fillings. Dental bridges prevent healthy teeth from shifting out of position, which can cause bite problems. After receiving a fixed bridge, patients may notice a significant improvement in their ability to speak and chew. For patients with removable dental appliances, such as partial dentures, our San Francisco practice recommends fixed bridges as a secure option. Traditional Fixed Bridges Dr. Marquis works with each patient on an individual basis, recommending a variety of dental bridge options that address their unique needs. Among the most common options are traditional bridges. These bridges work with existing, healthy teeth and are of materials that promote natural aesthetic and strength. Crowns are placed over neighboring teeth, which are then used as anchors for the artificial teeth. Your dental bridge can give you years of service, especially when you follow routine check-up visits to keep an eye on oral health and wear and tear on restorations. Receiving a Fixed Bridge The abutment teeth used to anchor the bridge are prepared for a proper and secure fit. Impressions, or molds, are taken to fabricate a bridge that accurately imitates natural teeth. To ensure you are not left with an incomplete smile prior to receiving your permanent bridge, you will have a temporary bridge to wear. Prior to cementing it in place, Dr. Marquis assesses your custom-designed permanent bridge, making any adjustments for a stable and balanced fit. Dependent individual needs, the bridge may be bonded with temporary cement to allow adjustment to the new appliance. At a future appointment, the fixed bridge is cemented permanently. After the procedure, you will receive care instructions, including advice on proper brushing and flossing routines.   Ready to Learn More? Contact Y. Danielle Marquis, DDS, MPH. Dr. Danielle Marquis and her staff in San Francisco offer professionalInvisalign orthodontic services that are sure to fit your needs and lifestyle. One of the most prominent concerns adults have when considering orthodontic work is the appearance of    traditional metal braces and the extended period over which the orthodontic work is done. Invisalign alleviates this concern by providing a metal-free, faster-working alternative. Dr. Marquis is experienced in Invisalign orthodontics and can help you take the next step toward achieving the smile of your dreams.   INVISALIGN FAQ What is Invisalign? Invisalign  is a technique in which transparent aligners made out of  SmartTrack material  are utilized to correct your teeth. Basically, they’re a set of clear, removable aligners that work to straighten your teeth over time just like braces, but without using wires or brackets at all. The SmartTrack material is a patented thermoplastic material that was made just for use for Invisalign. Because this material was made safely, Invisalign is  FDA approved  and doesn’t have harmful chemicals such as latex. If you’re allergic to gluten, no need to worry: Invisalign is gluten-free as well. The aligners are specially designed for each individual patient. A skilled orthodontist will make a digital map of your teeth and form your aligners specifically to apply the right pressure in the right places and solve your smile concerns. Through every step of the process, you’ll be monitored by your orthodontist. How Do the Aligners Work? Another one of the most popular Invisalign FAQs is: how do they work? Invisalign works similarly to metal braces do; their main advantage is the fact that they are clear as opposed to braces. Your aligners are designed to put gentle force on your teeth, in different areas, and with careful timing, to bring them into a more aesthetic and functional alignment. Each aligner is designed to make only the slightest of adjustments. Aligners are swapped out usually about every two weeks, to continue putting pressure on your teeth. This ensures that your orthodontist can continue monitoring the progress of your teeth and alter the aligners if necessary. Eventually, the incremental progress will slowly accumulate, and you’ll discover that your smile is better than ever. The best part of it all is that you won’t have to deal with the bulk or discomfort of traditional braces to get the smile you’ve always wanted. How Long Is Treatment? Treatment length varies depending on your particular alignment issues, but in general, Invisalign treatment for adults usually can be completed in twelve to eighteen months.  How Often Do I Have To Wear My Aligners? One of the most popular Invisalign FAQs is, how often do I have to wear my aligners? This is crucial to the effectiveness of your treatment. You must wear your aligners every day for 20 to 22 hours in order for them to work. When you take your aligners out to eat and drink or to clean them and your teeth, make sure you put them right back in. Missing large gaps of treatment time will derail your treatment which can be very frustrating. And typically you will receive a new set of aligners every two weeks. Do I have To Give Up Certain Foods? No! One of the best parts of the Invisalign system is that you do not have to restrict your diet. The trays are meant to be removed while you eat, so you do not have to worry about damaging them with hard or sticky foods. You may want to be a little easy on your teeth after each new set of aligners though, because your teeth may be a little uncomfortable while adjusting. Keep in mind, though, that you will need to brush your teeth after eating before you put the aligners back in. If you eat a food that will be very difficult to brush out (say, corn on the cob), make sure you have enough time to clean thoroughly before wearing the aligners again. What Is the Best Way To Care For My Aligners? Avoid discoloration, odor and a buildup of bacteria by following these tips for how to clean Invisalign trays. Each morning take your aligners out and clean both your teeth and the aligners thoroughly. While you were sleeping a lot of bacteria could have built up on the aligners so it is important to start the day off right with clean teeth and aligners. Make sure you do this every evening as well. Always rinse them when you remove them. To prevent dry saliva and plaque from building up, make sure you rinse your aligners every time you take them out of your mouth. You want to avoid creating an inviting environment for bacteria to grow. You can also use a clear anti-bacterial soap to keep your aligners clean and clear. Brushing the aligners with a soft-bristled toothbrush can also help remove some of the plaque. Even when you are out and about and not in the comfort of your own home, it is important to properly take care of your Invisalign aligners. Soak your aligners every day. The best way to make sure your Invisalign aligners are as clean as possible is to soak them in either a denture cleaner or Invisalign cleaning crystals. After they are finished soaking, use an extra toothbrush that you don’t use for your teeth to brush off any lingering plaque or food particles and then rinse the aligners before placing them back in your mouth. Always brush and floss your teeth before putting the aligners back in. If you put the aligners back in when there are food particles still stuck between your teeth, you will be trapping them inside the aligners which could lead to cavities and other dental issues down the road. What Are the Invisalign Cleaning Crystals? As discussed, it is very important to keep your Invisalign aligner trays clean at all times. If you are often in a hurry and worry about cutting corners with your cleaning routine, you should look into the Invisalign Cleaning System. Invisalign offers this product as an alternative to brushing your trays multiple times a day. To use the system, you place your Invisalign aligner trays in warm water and add the Cleaning Crystals. You gently shake the mixtures to evenly distribute the crystals, and then you let the whole thing sit for about 15 minutes. Then you shake it again, remove the trays, and rinse them off in warm water. NEVER use hot water on your trays, as it could melt or soften the plastic. Using the Invisalign Cleaning System is not required though. You can keep your aligners just as clean with old-fashioned brushing. Some studies have even found that the best approach is a combination of the Cleaning System and brushing with toothpaste. Whatever method you choose, be sure to do it consistently and thoroughly. Where Can I Buy Invisalign Cleaning Crystals? Luckily it is very easy to find places to buy Invisalign Cleaning Crystals. You can buy them directly from Invisalign, order them online from Amazon or even pick them up at your local Walmart. Get recommendations from your orthodontist on how best to clean your aligners and where to get all the cleaning accessories you will need. Does Invisalign Hurt? While there is pressure on your teeth to align them, many patients are not very affected by this. Combining the affordability and convenience of dentures with the stability and longevity of dental implants , these implant-supported treatments are a great solution for patients who are living with missing teeth, but don’t want to deal with traditional dentures. A Great Alternative to Dentures Dentures have been an affordable, effective solution to missing teeth for many years, but there’s no doubt that they are sometimes uncomfortable and inconvenient. Dentures affect your ability to eat and taste certain foods and they have a tendency to slip around inside your mouth.  Implant supported dentures share the best characteristics of traditional dentures and dental implants. Like conventional dentures, implant supported dentures are removable for easy cleaning and repair. The major difference is that they are secured in place to titanium implants that fuse with your underlying jawbone. They are a great solution for patients who need all or most of their teeth replaced.  Benefits of Implant Supported Dentures over Traditional Dentures Unlike traditional dentures, implant supported dentures are stabilized in a way that has provides patients with a number of dental advantages. For starters, i mplant supported dentures always stay firmly in place. With this treatment, patients no longer need to worry about their restoration moving or slipping at inopportune times, and are able to enjoy confident speech. This treatment also provides fewer dietary restrictions than their traditional counterpart. Because implant supported dentures won’t slip, you have increased chewing power and can eat foods like corn-on-the-cob, steak, and apples. Additionally, the prosthetic portion is designed to keep the palate clear, allowing patients to once again enjoy the full flavor of their meals. As implant-supported dentures rely on the same titanium posts as traditional dental implants, the full mouth restoration option fully engages the jaw bone. Ultimately, this allows patients to avoid the facial sagging and bone deterioration that can result from prolonged denture use.  Implant Supported Dentures in San Francisco Implant supported dentures are placed in two steps. First, your implants must be surgically placed. The implant surgery is less invasive and more affordable than a full arch of dental implants - rather than placing an implant for every tooth being replaced, implant-supported dentures only require 4-6 implants per arch. After the implants are placed, your mouth will need a few weeks to fully heal, and then the dentures can be placed in our San Francisco dental office. The dentures are designed as a single unit that snaps in place on top of the implants. Dentures can be easily removed for cleaning, and with proper care will last many years.  Smile With Confidence As dental professionals it is our priority to provide quality dental care you can trust. While easy to use, traditional dental restorations for missing teeth often fail to fully treat the entire smile. As prosthetics like dentures or fixed bridges sit on top of the gums, they do not incorporate the underlying jaw bone into treatment. Over time, this can cause the bone to deteriorate in a process known as resorption. If left untreated, dentures patients may experience facial sagging, difficulty performing normal dental function, and loose prosthetics. In contrast, dental implants incorporate all parts of the smile, providing patients with a truly comprehensive tooth replacement. Dental implants are created by securing a titanium post where your tooth’s root used to be. This implant fuses with the underlying jawbone, providing a sturdy base for a crown. This fusing process creates a strong bond, called osseointegration, making your dental implants much stronger and sturdier than dentures.  Dr. Danielle Marquis is a San Francisco dentist, offering dental implant services. She has extensive experience working with many types of implants. If a patient is needing a brand new dental implant, Dr. Marquis refers patients to a highly-skilled oral surgeon for the implants to be surgically placed. Once the jaw has healed, about six to eight weeks after the implant has been placed, Dr. Marquis restores the implants by securing the crown to the dental implant. The healing period gives time for the osseointegration process to occur, so that by the time Dr. Marquis secures that cap of the implant (crown), the tooth is already firmly set into the jawbone. What are the Benefits of Dental Implants over Alternatives? Dental implants offer our San Francisco patients many significant advancements over traditional dentures. These benefits include:  Minimal bone loss.  Jaw structure preservation. Natural-looking, permanent tooth replacement. No dietary restrictions. Easy maintenance and care.   Implant Restoration in San Francisco Dr. Marquis offers dental implant restoration for patients looking to complete their dental implant procedure, as well as restore any appliances that may have become damaged due to normal wear. The dental implant process typically involves several dental appointments over the course of a few weeks. These visits help to ensure proper fit and comfort for all of our patients. Each artificial crown is designed to fit the existing structure and color of your remaining teeth. The end result is a fully functional and seamless smile that will last you for years to come. Smile With Confidence As dental professionals it is our priority to provide quality dental care you can trust.
