By practicing good oral hygiene at home and scheduling regular checkups with your dentist, you can help keep your smile bright and healthy for many years to come. Here are a few simple ways that you can prevent the build-up of plaque and cavities: Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Use fluoride toothpaste to remove food particles and plaque from the tooth surfaces. Also be sure to brush the top surface of your tongue; this will remove any extra plaque-causing food particles, and help keep your breath fresh! Clean between your teeth by flossing at least once a day. You can also use a mouthwash to help kill bacteria and freshen your breath. Decay-causing bacteria can linger between teeth where toothbrush bristles can't reach. Floss and mouthwash will help remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gum line. Eat a balanced diet, and try to avoid extra-sugary treats. Nutritious foods such as raw vegetables, plain yogurt, cheese, or fruit can help keep your smile healthy. Remember to schedule regular checkups with your dentist every six months for a professional teeth cleaning. Ask your dentist about dental sealants, protective plastic coatings that can be applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth where decay often starts. If you play sports, be sure to ask your dentist about special mouthguards designed to protect your smile. If it's been six months since your last dental checkup, then it's time to contact our practice and schedule your next appointment! Brushing Instructions Flossing Instructions Printable instructions > Brushing Instructions Brushing: Step 1 Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gum. Brushing: Step 2 Brush gently in a circular motion. Brushing: Step 3 Brush the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of each tooth. Brushing: Step 4 Use the tip of your brush for the inner surface of your front teeth. Flossing Instructions Flossing: Step 1 Wind about 18 inches of floss around your fingers as shown. Most of it should be wrapped around one finger, and the other finger takes it up as the floss is used. Flossing: Step 2 Use your thumbs and forefingers to guide about one inch of floss between your teeth. Flossing: Step 3 Holding the floss tightly, gently saw it between your teeth. Then curve the floss into a C-shape against one tooth and gently slide it beneath your gums. Flossing: Step 4 Slide the floss up and down, repeating for each tooth. the smile co. san mateo (650) 345-5711 675 Mariners Island Blvd Ste 105 San Mateo , CA 94404 Website Powered by Sesame 24-7 ™ | Site Map --> --> Patient Testimonials-Dentist San Mateo CA| The Smile Company --> --> the smile co. san mateo home Book An Appointment --> --> About Meet Dr. Daniel Kim Meet Dr. Brian Hua Meet Jessica Gonzalez RDH Meet the Team What Sets Us Apart New Patients Patient Forms Office Tour Financial Information Testimonials General Care Common Procedures Preventive Care Oral Cancer Screening Pediatric Dentistry Gum Disease TMJ-TMD Snoring Prevention Nitrous Oxide Treatments Cosmetic Dentistry GLO® Teeth Whitening Invisalign® Treatment Traditional Orthodontics Glidewell.IO™ Same Visit Crowns iTero® Element™ Full-Mouth Reconstruction Implants En Español Nuevas Pacientes Sobre Nosotros Contacto Contact Book Appointment The Smile Company Location Patient Forms | Office Tour | Financial Information | Testimonials Patient Testimonials If you’d like to share some kind words and smiles, please ask our front desk staff for a comment card at your next appointment. In some cases, this pain is due to Temporomandibular Disorder, or TMD. Your temporomandibular joints (TMJ) connect your lower jawbone to your skull. These joints get a lot of use throughout the day as you speak, chew, swallow, and yawn. Pain in and around these joints can be unpleasant and may even restrict movement. Symptoms of TMD include: Pain in the jaw area Pain, ringing, or stuffiness in the ears Frequent headaches or neck aches Clicking or popping sound when the jaw moves Swelling on the sides of the face Muscle spasms in the jaw area A change in the alignment of top and bottom teeth Locked jaw or limited opening of the mouth Should you notice any of these symptoms, let your doctor know. Your dentist can help indicate the presence of TMD and create an effective treatment just for you. There are a few simple steps you can take at home or work to prevent TMD from becoming more severe, or to prevent it from occurring: Relax your face — remember the rule: "Lips together, teeth apart" Avoid grinding your teeth Avoid constant gum chewing Don't cradle the phone receiver between your head and shoulder — either use a headset or hold the receiver in your hand Chew food evenly on both sides of your mouth Do not sit with your chin rested on your hand Practice good posture — keep your head up, back straight, and shoulders squared the smile co. san mateo (650) 345-5711 675 Mariners Island Blvd Ste 105 San Mateo , CA 94404 Website Powered by Sesame 24-7 ™ | Site Map --> --> GLO® Teeth Whitening-Dentist San Mateo CA| The Smile Company --> --> the smile co. san mateo home Book An Appointment --> --> About Meet Dr. Daniel Kim Meet Dr. Brian Hua Meet Jessica Gonzalez RDH Meet the Team What Sets Us Apart New Patients Patient Forms Office Tour Financial Information Testimonials General Care Common Procedures Preventive Care Oral Cancer Screening Pediatric Dentistry Gum Disease TMJ-TMD Snoring Prevention Nitrous Oxide Treatments Cosmetic Dentistry GLO® Teeth Whitening Invisalign® Treatment Traditional Orthodontics Glidewell.IO™ Same Visit Crowns iTero® Element™ Full-Mouth Reconstruction Implants En Español Nuevas Pacientes Sobre Nosotros Contacto Contact Book Appointment The Smile Company Location Cosmetic Dentistry | GLO® Teeth Whitening | Invisalign® Treatment | Traditional Orthodontics | Glidewell.IO™ Same Visit Crowns | iTero® Element™ | Full-Mouth Reconstruction | Implants GLO® Teeth Whitening Look younger, boost your self-confidence, and empower your smile with Philips Sonicare Teeth Whitening! Today's metal braces are much smaller, flatter, and more comfortable than in the past. Patients of all ages choose metal braces to help them achieve straight, beautiful smiles. What Braces are Made Of Traditional metal braces are made of high quality stainless steel or titanium. The three main parts of your braces are: Brackets — Brackets are attached to the teeth using special glue that bonds them to the tooth surface and holds them in place. Archwire — The archwire is the thin metal wire that connects each bracket and puts pressure on the teeth to help guide them into place. Ligature Elastic (also known as the “rubber bands”) — Elastics, or rubber bands, are the colored ties that hold the archwires to the brackets. Your orthodontist will change the elastics at each appointment. Elastics may come in a variety of colors. How Braces Work Once placed on your teeth, braces place constant pressure on your teeth, and the force of the pressure helps move teeth into proper position. At each appointment, your orthodontist may tighten the archwires. In addition to braces, some patients may need to wear rubber bands or headgear. Patients wearing braces may notice their teeth feeling a little loose. This is normal and temporary; once the teeth are done moving this feeling will go away. Metal Braces for All Ages Traditional metal braces are still the most popular, quickest, and most cost-effective orthodontic treatment available. Your orthodontist can help you determine what treatment is best for your individual case. Please contact our practice to schedule an appointment and learn more about how braces can enhance your smile. the smile co. san mateo (650) 345-5711 675 Mariners Island Blvd Ste 105 San Mateo , CA 94404 Website Powered by Sesame 24-7 ™ | Site Map --> --> Snoring Prevention-Dentist San Mateo CA| The Smile Company --> --> the smile co. san mateo home Book An Appointment --> --> About Meet Dr. Daniel Kim Meet Dr. Brian Hua Meet Jessica Gonzalez RDH Meet the Team What Sets Us Apart New Patients Patient Forms Office Tour Financial Information Testimonials General Care Common Procedures Preventive Care Oral Cancer Screening Pediatric Dentistry Gum Disease TMJ-TMD Snoring Prevention Nitrous Oxide Treatments Cosmetic Dentistry GLO® Teeth Whitening Invisalign® Treatment Traditional Orthodontics Glidewell.IO™ Same Visit Crowns iTero® Element™ Full-Mouth Reconstruction Implants En Español Nuevas Pacientes Sobre Nosotros Contacto Contact Book Appointment The Smile Company Location Common Procedures | Preventive Care | Oral Cancer Screening | Pediatric Dentistry | Gum Disease | TMJ-TMD | Snoring Prevention | Nitrous Oxide Snoring Prevention While snoring is a common problem for many people, it can also be a sign of other major health complications. It is estimated that more than 80 million people in North America snore while sleeping, which not only affects the quality of sleep of the person snoring, but also the quality of sleep of their loved ones and other family members. Luckily, there is a way to treat chronic snoring. What causes snoring? Snoring can be the result of several factors. Typically, snoring is caused by the relaxing of the muscles and soft tissues in the throat and mouth, making the air passage smaller. The decrease in space through the airway makes it harder for each breath to get through, and when it does get through, it moves over the soft tissues in the mouth and throat and causes a vibration that results in the snoring sound. Other causes of snoring may include: Excess body weight Alcohol consumption Certain sleep aides or sedatives Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) What is a Mandibular Advancement Device? If you snore at night, then a mandibular advancement device (MAD) may represent a solution and a better night's sleep! The MAD is a specially designed dental device that gently helps keep the lower jaw, or mandible, in a forward position, increasing the space between the airway passage and helping you breathe better so you can get a full, quiet night's sleep. Some devices also stop the tongue from falling back over your windpipe. Your dentist will fit these special appliances to meet your individual condition. Is a MAD comfortable? The answer is simple — YES! A mandibular advancement device is made to be comfortable, so that you can sleep without even noticing you're wearing it. It does not prevent you from breathing with your mouth open and will even eliminate snoring for patients with sinus congestion or allergies. You may experience some slight stiffness of the jaw for the first few mornings after wearing the device, but this feeling is only temporary, and will go away after you wake up and remove the device. To learn more about a mandibular advancement device, contact our practice and schedule an appointment and consultation. the smile co. san mateo (650) 345-5711 675 Mariners Island Blvd Ste 105 San Mateo , CA 94404 Website Powered by Sesame 24-7 ™ | Site Map --> --> Nitrous Oxide-Dentist San Mateo CA| The Smile Company --> --> the smile co. san mateo home Book An Appointment --> --> About Meet Dr. Daniel Kim Meet Dr. Brian Hua Meet Jessica Gonzalez RDH Meet the Team What Sets Us Apart New Patients Patient Forms Office Tour Financial Information Testimonials General Care Common Procedures Preventive Care Oral Cancer Screening Pediatric Dentistry Gum Disease TMJ-TMD Snoring Prevention Nitrous Oxide Treatments Cosmetic Dentistry GLO® Teeth Whitening Invisalign® Treatment Traditional Orthodontics Glidewell.IO™ Same Visit Crowns iTero® Element™ Full-Mouth Reconstruction Implants En Español Nuevas Pacientes Sobre Nosotros Contacto Contact Book Appointment The Smile Company Location Common Procedures | Preventive Care | Oral Cancer Screening | Pediatric Dentistry | Gum Disease | TMJ-TMD | Snoring Prevention | Nitrous Oxide Nitrous Oxide Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is the most frequently used method for easing mild to moderate anxiety. Administered through a small mask that fits over your nose, it is an effective way to calm anxiety, raise your pain threshold, and even make time seem like it's passing quicker than usual. As the gas begins to work, you will become calm, although you will still be awake and able to talk with the dentist. At the end of your appointment, you'll resume breathing regular oxygen, and all the effects of nitrous oxide will disappear, so you can resume your normal activities immediately. the smile co. san mateo (650) 345-5711 675 Mariners Island Blvd Ste 105 San Mateo , CA 94404 Website Powered by Sesame 24-7 ™ | Site Map --> --> Daniel Kim, DMD | Dentist San Mateo CA --> --> the smile co. san mateo home Book An Appointment --> --> About Meet Dr. Daniel Kim Meet Dr. Brian Hua Meet Jessica Gonzalez RDH Meet the Team What Sets Us Apart New Patients Patient Forms Office Tour Financial Information Testimonials General Care Common Procedures Preventive Care Oral Cancer Screening Pediatric Dentistry Gum Disease TMJ-TMD Snoring Prevention Nitrous Oxide Treatments Cosmetic Dentistry GLO® Teeth Whitening Invisalign® Treatment Traditional Orthodontics Glidewell.IO™ Same Visit Crowns iTero® Element™ Full-Mouth Reconstruction Implants En Español Nuevas Pacientes Sobre Nosotros Contacto Contact Book Appointment The Smile Company Location Meet Dr. Daniel Kim | Meet Dr. Brian Hua | Meet Jessica Gonzalez RDH | Meet the Team | What Sets Us Apart Meet Dr. Daniel Kim Dr. Daniel Kim is focused on providing comprehensive patient care involving detailed oral diagnosis and treatment planning. Your dentist, who has years of experience working with the materials and procedures related to full-mouth reconstruction, will develop a plan that addresses all your needs and will leave you with a perfect smile, ideal bite, and optimal function. You may be a candidate for full-mouth reconstruction if: Your teeth have been lost due to decay or trauma Your teeth have been injured or fractured Your teeth have become severely worn because of long-term acid erosion (from foods, beverages, or acid reflux) You have ongoing jaw, muscle, or headache pain related to your bite The extent of your reconstruction will depend on the condition of your teeth. Your dentist may recommend crowns, bridges, veneers, or implants to restore your smile to its best possible condition. He or she will also address the state of your gum tissue, as the health of your gums may impact the type of restorations you receive. Your treatment plan will entail a step-by-step process detailing all aspects of your reconstruction. Gum disease is one of the top reasons for tooth loss in adults, and because it is virtually pain-free, many patients do not know they have the disease. During each regular checkup, your dentist will check for signs of periodontal disease by measuring the space between your teeth and gums. What causes gum disease? Gum disease is caused by a buildup of plaque (a sticky form of bacteria that forms on the teeth). If the plaque is not removed (by flossing, brushing, and regular dental checkups), it will continue to build up and create toxins that can damage the gums. Periodontal disease forms just below the gum line and creates small pockets that separate the gums from the teeth. Periodontal disease has two stages: gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis — This is the early stage of gum disease, when the gums become red and swollen, and bleed easily. At this stage, the disease is treatable and can usually be eliminated by daily brushing and flossing. Periodontitis — If left untreated, gingivitis will advance into periodontitis, and the gums and bone that support the teeth will become seriously and irreversibly damaged. Gums infected with periodontitis can cause teeth to become loose, fall out, or be removed by a dentist. Certain factors can increase a patient's risk of developing periodontal disease, including: Smoking or using chewing tobacco Diabetes Certain types of medication such as steroids, anti-epilepsy drugs, cancer therapy drugs, calcium channel blockers, and oral contraceptives Bridges that no longer fit properly Crooked teeth Old fillings Pregnancy While it is possible to have periodontal disease and not know it, some symptoms can include: Gums that bleed easily Red, swollen, tender gums Gums that have pulled away from the teeth Persistent bad breath or bad taste Pus between your teeth and gums Permanent teeth that are loose or separating Any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite Any change in the fit of partial dentures Treating Gum Disease Treatments for gum disease can vary depending on the severity of each individual case. Typical treatments include: Non-surgical treatments such as at-home periodontal trays, and scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) Periodontal surgery and laser gum surgery Dental implants Preventing Gum Disease Regular dental checkups and periodontal examinations are important for maintaining your health and the health of your smile. You don't have to lose teeth to periodontal disease, and by practicing good oral hygiene at home, you can significantly reduce your chances of ever getting gum disease. Remember to brush regularly, clean between your teeth, eat a balanced diet, and schedule regular dental visits to help keep your smile healthy.   the smile co. san mateo (650) 345-5711 675 Mariners Island Blvd Ste 105 San Mateo , CA 94404 Website Powered by Sesame 24-7 ™ | Site Map --> --> iTero® Element™-Dentist San Mateo CA| The Smile Company --> --> the smile co. san mateo home Book An Appointment --> --> About Meet Dr. Daniel Kim Meet Dr. Brian Hua Meet Jessica Gonzalez RDH Meet the Team What Sets Us Apart New Patients Patient Forms Office Tour Financial Information Testimonials General Care Common Procedures Preventive Care Oral Cancer Screening Pediatric Dentistry Gum Disease TMJ-TMD Snoring Prevention Nitrous Oxide Treatments Cosmetic Dentistry GLO® Teeth Whitening Invisalign® Treatment Traditional Orthodontics Glidewell.IO™ Same Visit Crowns iTero® Element™ Full-Mouth Reconstruction Implants En Español Nuevas Pacientes Sobre Nosotros Contacto Contact Book Appointment The Smile Company Location Cosmetic Dentistry | GLO® Teeth Whitening | Invisalign® Treatment | Traditional Orthodontics | Glidewell.IO™ Same Visit Crowns | iTero® Element™ | Full-Mouth Reconstruction | Implants iTero® Element™ We Are a Digital Imaging Practice: Proud Owners of an iTero® Element™ Intraoral Scanner We'll Make a Great First Impression The iTero Element Scanner is a state-of-the-art digital scanning system that eliminates the need for unpleasant traditional alginate impressions—no more messy putty in your mouth! We take a holistic approach to your dental care, which includes an oral cancer screening as a part of your regular exam. Like many kinds of cancer, oral cancer can be life-threatening if not diagnosed and treated early. We have the skills and tools to ensure that early signs and symptoms of oral cancer and pre-cancerous conditions are identified. While these symptoms may be caused by other, less serious problems, it is very important to visit our office to rule out the possibility of oral cancer. The most common symptoms of oral cancer include: Red or white spots or sores anywhere in the oral cavity A sore that bleeds easily or does not heal A lump, thickening, or rough spot Pain, tenderness, or numbness anywhere in the mouth or on the lips Difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking, or moving the jaw or tongue Our team is trained in a simple, quick screening that involves an examination of your oral cavity as a whole, and not just your teeth, to detect cancerous and precancerous conditions. Besides a visual examination of your mouth, we will also feel the tissue of your mouth and throat to detect any abnormalities. If we find an area of concern, we may perform a simple test, such as a brush test, which collects cells from a suspicious lesion in the mouth to be sent to a laboratory for analysis. If this test comes back atypical or positive, we may recommend a biopsy. Aside from receiving an oral cancer screening during your checkup at our office, there are many things you can do to help prevent oral cancer. The best way to prevent oral cancer is to avoid all tobacco products and only drink alcohol in moderation. Maintain a healthy, balanced diet. Limit your exposure to the sun and always wear UV-A/B-blocking, sun-protective lotions on your skin as well as your lips. During your next dental appointment, ask your dentist to perform an oral exam. Early detection of oral cancer can improve the chance of successful treatment. the smile co. san mateo (650) 345-5711 675 Mariners Island Blvd Ste 105 San Mateo , CA 94404 Website Powered by Sesame 24-7 ™ | Site Map --> --> Nuevas Pacientes - The Smile Co. | San Mateo CA --> --> the smile co. san mateo home Book An Appointment --> --> About Meet Dr. Daniel Kim Meet Dr. Brian Hua Meet Jessica Gonzalez RDH Meet the Team What Sets Us Apart New Patients Patient Forms Office Tour Financial Information Testimonials General Care Common Procedures Preventive Care Oral Cancer Screening Pediatric Dentistry Gum Disease TMJ-TMD Snoring Prevention Nitrous Oxide Treatments Cosmetic Dentistry GLO® Teeth Whitening Invisalign® Treatment Traditional Orthodontics Glidewell.IO™ Same Visit Crowns iTero® Element™ Full-Mouth Reconstruction Implants En Español Nuevas Pacientes Sobre Nosotros Contacto Contact Book Appointment The Smile Company Location Nuevas Pacientes | Sobre Nosotros | Contacto Nuevas Pacientes Tómese un minuto para imprimir y completar el formulario de información del paciente antes de su primera cita: Formulario de paciente   PDF Si no puede abrir archivos PDF, puede  get Adobe Reader®  gratis. A safe and proven treatment option, a crown is a custom-made appliance that covers your natural tooth structure to ultimately strengthen your tooth and improve the appearance of your smile.  In the past, restoring a tooth with a crown required at least two visits — often with a week, or even two, between appointments. Using new sophisticated technologies, today it’s possible for your dentist to restore a tooth with a crown in just one appointment. In fact, this long-lasting, natural-looking treatment can often be completed in as little as two hours. HOW THE PROCESS WORKS STEP 1: Your dentist prepares your tooth and captures a 3D digital scan of your mouth. STEP 2: Specialized software is used to create a digital blueprint of your dental crown. STEP 3: Your crown is sculpted from a block of tooth-colored, metal-free material while you wait. STEP 4: Your dentist bonds your custom-made crown onto your tooth. Children are not born with a natural fear of the dentist, but they can fear the unknown. Our office makes a special effort to use pleasant, non-frightening, simple words to describe each treatment. We want you and your child to feel at ease from the moment your family arrives at our office. The more you and your child know about the first visit, the better you will feel. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends... Children should visit the dentist by their first birthday. It is important that your child’s newly-erupted teeth (erupting at six and 12 months of age) receive proper dental care and benefit from proper oral hygiene habits right from the beginning. Getting to know your teeth is fun! Download our Dynamite Dental Fun Kit! When New Teeth Arrive Your child’s first primary or baby teeth will begin to erupt between the ages of six and 12 months, and will continue to erupt until about age three. During this time, your child’s gums may feel tender and sore. To help alleviate this discomfort, we recommend that you soothe the gums by rubbing a clean finger or a cool, wet cloth across them. You may also choose to make use of a teething ring. When your child has finished teething, you can expect a total of 20 primary teeth. Your child’s primary teeth are shed at various times throughout childhood. Permanent teeth begin erupting at age six, and continue until age 21. Adults have 28 permanent teeth (32, including wisdom teeth). Adopting Healthy Oral Hygiene Habits As your child’s teeth erupt, be sure to examine them every two weeks, looking for lines and discoloration that may be caused by decay. Remember that sugary foods and liquids can attack a new tooth, so take care that your child brushes after feeding or eating. We recommend brushing four times a day for optimal oral hygiene: after breakfast, after lunch, after dinner, and at bedtime.   Brushing can be fun, and your child should brush as soon as the first tooth arrives. Fluoridated toothpaste is recommended for all children starting at tooth eruption, regardless of caries risk. A smear (the size of a grain of rice) of toothpaste should be used up to age three. After the third birthday, a pea-sized amount may be used. We recommend dispensing toothpaste for young children and supervising and assist with brushing. Flossing is also a part of good oral hygiene habits, and your doctor will discuss with you the right time to start flossing. If you notice signs of decay, contact your dentist immediately. Preventing Tooth Decay with Regular Checkups Tooth decay is caused by sugars left in your mouth that turn into an acid, which can break down your teeth. Children are at high risk for tooth decay for a simple reason: many children and adolescents do not practice regular, good oral hygiene habits. Proper brushing and flossing routines combined with regular dental visits help keep tooth decay away. Your child should visit the dentist every six months for regular dental cleanings and checkups. We recommend fluoride treatments twice a year along with cleanings to keep teeth their strongest. Tooth sealants are also recommended because they “seal” the deep grooves in your child’s teeth, preventing decay from forming in these hard-to-reach areas. Sealants last for several years, but will be monitored at your child's regular checkups. the smile co. san mateo (650) 345-5711 675 Mariners Island Blvd Ste 105 San Mateo , CA 94404 Website Powered by Sesame 24-7 ™ | Site Map --> --> Dental Implants – San Mateo CA | The Smile Company --> --> the smile co. san mateo home Book An Appointment --> --> About Meet Dr. Daniel Kim Meet Dr. Brian Hua Meet Jessica Gonzalez RDH Meet the Team What Sets Us Apart New Patients Patient Forms Office Tour Financial Information Testimonials General Care Common Procedures Preventive Care Oral Cancer Screening Pediatric Dentistry Gum Disease TMJ-TMD Snoring Prevention Nitrous Oxide Treatments Cosmetic Dentistry GLO® Teeth Whitening Invisalign® Treatment Traditional Orthodontics Glidewell.IO™ Same Visit Crowns iTero® Element™ Full-Mouth Reconstruction Implants En Español Nuevas Pacientes Sobre Nosotros Contacto Contact Book Appointment The Smile Company Location Cosmetic Dentistry | GLO® Teeth Whitening | Invisalign® Treatment | Traditional Orthodontics | Glidewell.IO™ Same Visit Crowns | iTero® Element™ | Full-Mouth Reconstruction | Implants Dental Implants in San Mateo People are living longer than ever, and while regular brushing, flossing, and checkups allow many of us to maintain our natural smiles for a lifetime, sometimes our teeth just can't keep up. If you've lost a tooth (or a few teeth) due to injury or disease, dental implants can rejuvenate both your smile and your oral health. An implant is a synthetic tooth root in the shape of a post that is surgically placed into the jawbone. The “root” is usually made of titanium: the same material used in many replacement hips and knees, and a metal that is well-suited to pairing with human bone. A replacement tooth is then fixed to the post. The tooth can be either permanently attached or removable. Permanent teeth are more stable and feel more like natural teeth. The ideal candidate for implants is a non-smoker who has good oral health, including a sufficient amount of bone in the jaw, and healthy gums with no sign of gum disease. When should I get Single or Multiple Implants at The Smile Company in San Mateo, CA? Implants are versatile. If you are only missing one tooth, one implant plus one replacement tooth will do the trick. If you are missing several teeth in a row, a few strategically placed implants can support a permanent bridge (a set of replacement teeth). Similarly, if you have lost all of your teeth, a full bridge or full denture can be permanently fixed in your mouth with a strategic number of implants. What are the Advantages Over Dentures or Bridges at The Smile Company? Conventional bridges and dentures are not fixed to the bone, and can therefore be unstable. This can make it difficult to eat or smile with confidence. Implants not only look more natural, but feel and act more like normal teeth, with a stronger biting force. And because they don't directly rely on neighboring teeth for support, implants don't compromise the health of your natural teeth. In fact, bridges are only expected to last seven to ten years, even less with root canals, whereas implants will typically last a lifetime. What does the Post-Implant Treatment Care process look like at The Smile Company in San Mateo, CA? Consider your replacement teeth to be the same as natural teeth. They require the same daily brushing and flossing, and the same amount of regular checkups. Just like your natural teeth, the better you take care of your replacements, the longer they will last. What Implant Services does The Smile Center offer? Our implant services include: Sinus Lift Augmentation: Often the sinuses will enlarge following loss of the upper back teeth. This can preclude placement of dental implants in the upper back areas of the mouth, since the sinus is an air-filled space and dental implants need to be surrounded by solid bone. A sinus lift augmentation/graft is a surgical procedure that restores the sinus cavity to its original size, and replaces the bone that has been lost as a result of the enlarged sinus. This new bone graft typically takes nine to 12 months to heal before the dental implants can be placed into the grafted bone. Autogenous Bone Grafting: Occasionally, the ideal areas for dental implants do not have sufficient bone quantity to support the implants. In these cases, it is often necessary to “borrow” bone from another area of your mouth and graft it into the deficient area. Often, the area of choice is from the chin or in the back of the jaw where your wisdom teeth used to be. Implant Site Development: When a tooth needs to be removed due to infection, it is not uncommon to have lost bone around the infected tooth. In these cases, various types of bone grafting can be done at the same time the tooth is removed to facilitate the placement of a dental implant at a later date. Computer-Enhanced Treatment Planning: We have special software on our computer that allows us to evaluate your dental CT scan in three dimensions for bone quality, bone quantity, and bone location, enabling the best possible placement of your dental implants. This also allows us to work closely and smoothly with your restorative dentist to ensure an ideal result where your dental implants are concerned. Implant Maintenance: Once your dental implant restoration is completed, it is important to keep the area clean and infection-free. Dental implants can accumulate plaque and tartar just as teeth can. Whether you have just one tooth replaced by an implant or several, a professional cleaning schedule will be necessary to keep your implants healthy. The time interval for these professional cleanings will be determined by your individual needs. the smile co. san mateo (650) 345-5711 675 Mariners Island Blvd Ste 105 San Mateo , CA 94404 Website Powered by Sesame 24-7 ™ | Site Map --> --> Meet Dr. Brian Hua - The Smile Co. | San Mateo CA --> --> the smile co. san mateo home Book An Appointment --> --> About Meet Dr. Daniel Kim Meet Dr. Brian Hua Meet Jessica Gonzalez RDH Meet the Team What Sets Us Apart New Patients Patient Forms Office Tour Financial Information Testimonials General Care Common Procedures Preventive Care Oral Cancer Screening Pediatric Dentistry Gum Disease TMJ-TMD Snoring Prevention Nitrous Oxide Treatments Cosmetic Dentistry GLO® Teeth Whitening Invisalign® Treatment Traditional Orthodontics Glidewell.IO™ Same Visit Crowns iTero® Element™ Full-Mouth Reconstruction Implants En Español Nuevas Pacientes Sobre Nosotros Contacto Contact Book Appointment The Smile Company Location Meet Dr. Daniel Kim | Meet Dr. Brian Hua | Meet Jessica Gonzalez RDH | Meet the Team | What Sets Us Apart Meet Dr. Brian Hua Dr. Brian Hua is a compassionate and thorough dentist dedicated to providing comprehensive care to his patients. Bonding is a conservative way to repair slightly chipped, discolored, or crooked teeth. During dental bonding, a white filling is placed onto your tooth to improve its appearance. The filling “bonds” with your tooth, and because it comes in a variety of tooth-colored shades, it closely matches the appearance of your natural teeth. Tooth bonding can also be used for tooth fillings instead of silver amalgam. Many patients prefer bonded fillings because the white color is much less noticeable than silver. Bonded fillings can be used on front or back teeth, depending on the location and extent of tooth decay. Bonding is less expensive than other cosmetic treatments and can usually be completed in one visit to our office. However, bonding can stain and is easier to break than other cosmetic treatments, such as porcelain veneers. If it does break or chip, tell your doctor. The bonding can generally be easily patched or repaired in one visit. ↑ Back to top What are the benefits and considerations of getting a dental bridge to replace missing teeth? A bridge may be used to replace missing teeth, help maintain the shape of your face, and alleviate stress on your bite. A bridge replaces missing teeth with artificial teeth, looks great, and literally bridges the gap where one or more teeth may have been. Your bridge can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials and is bonded onto surrounding teeth for support. The success of any bridge depends on its foundation: the other teeth, gums, or bone to which it is attached. Therefore, it’s very important to keep your existing teeth, gums, and jaw healthy and strong. ↑ Back to top What are the purposes and materials used in dental crowns, and how do they differ from fillings in restoring teeth? Crowns are a restorative procedure used to improve your tooth’s shape or to strengthen a tooth. Crowns are most often used for teeth that are broken, worn, or have portions destroyed by tooth decay. A crown is a “cap” cemented onto an existing tooth that usually covers the portion of your tooth above the gum line. In effect, the crown becomes your tooth’s new outer surface. Crowns can be made of porcelain, metal, or both. Porcelain crowns are most often preferred because they mimic the translucency of natural teeth and are very strong. Crowns or onlays (partial crowns) are needed when there is insufficient tooth strength remaining to hold a filling. Unlike fillings, which apply the restorative material directly into your mouth, a crown is fabricated away from your mouth. Your crown is created in a lab from your unique tooth impression, which allows a dental laboratory technician to examine all aspects of your bite and jaw movements. Your crown is then sculpted just for you so that your bite and jaw movements function normally once the crown is placed. ↑ Back to top What are the different types of dentures, adn what are the key steps in caring for them to ensure and their longevity and proper function? Dentures are natural-looking replacement teeth that are removable. There are two types of dentures: full and partial. Full dentures are given to patients when all of the natural teeth have been removed. Partial dentures are attached to a metal frame that is connected to your natural teeth and are used to fill in where permanent teeth have been removed. Just like natural teeth, dentures need to be properly cared for. Use a gentle cleanser to brush your dentures, always keep them moist when they’re not in use, and be sure to keep your tongue and gums clean as well. ↑ Back to top What are the common reasons for tooth extraction, and what is the procedure involved in tooth extraction? There are times when it is necessary to remove a tooth. Sometimes a baby tooth has misshapen or long roots that prevent it from falling out as it should, and the tooth must be removed to make way for the permanent tooth to erupt. At other times, a tooth may have so much decay that it puts the surrounding teeth at risk of decay, so your doctor may recommend removal and replacement with a bridge or implant. Infection, orthodontic correction, or problems with a wisdom tooth can also require removal of a tooth. When it is determined that a tooth needs to be removed, your dentist may extract the tooth during a regular checkup or may request another visit for this procedure. The root of each tooth is encased within your jawbone in a “tooth socket,” and your tooth is held in that socket by a ligament. In order to extract a tooth, your dentist must expand the socket and separate the tooth from the ligament holding it in place. While this procedure is typically very quick, it is important to share with your doctor any concerns or preferences for sedation. Once a tooth has been removed, neighboring teeth may shift, causing problems with chewing or with your jaw joint function. To avoid these complications, your dentist may recommend that you replace the extracted tooth. ↑ Back to top What are the different types of dental fillings, including their materials and uses, and how do direct and indrect fillings differ? Traditional dental restoratives, or fillings, are most often made of silver amalgam. The strength and durability of this traditional dental material makes it useful for situations where restored teeth must withstand extreme forces that result from chewing, often in the back of the mouth. Newer dental fillings include ceramic and plastic compounds that mimic the appearance of natural teeth. These compounds, often called composite resins, are usually used on the front teeth where a natural appearance is important, but they can also be used on the back teeth depending on the location and extent of the tooth decay. "text": "Our implant services include: Sinus Lift Augmentation: Often the sinuses will enlarge following loss of the upper back teeth. The time interval for these professional cleanings will be determined by your individual needs."

The bonding can generally be easily patched or repaired in one visit."

        "text": "Crowns are a restorative procedure used to improve your tooth’s shape or to strengthen a tooth. Your crown is then sculpted just for you so that your bite and jaw movements function normally once the crown is placed."

        "text": "There are times when it is necessary to remove a tooth. To avoid these complications, your dentist may recommend that you replace the extracted tooth."

        "text": "If you are missing teeth, it is crucial to replace them. Without all your teeth, chewing and eating can destabilize your bite and cause you discomfort. When teeth are missing, your mouth can shift and even cause your face to look older. Implants are a great way to replace your missing teeth, and if properly maintained, can last a lifetime! An implant is a new tooth made of metal and porcelain that looks just like your natural tooth. It’s composed of two main parts: one part is the titanium implant body that takes the place of the missing root, and the second part is the tooth-colored crown that is cemented on top of the implant. With implant treatment, you can smile confidently knowing no one will ever suspect you have a replacement tooth. In addition to tooth replacement, implants may be used to anchor dentures, especially lower dentures that tend to shift when you talk or chew. For patients with removable partial dentures, implants can replace missing teeth so you have a more natural-looking smile."

      "acceptedAnswer": {
        "@type": "Answer",
        "text": "In the past, if you had a tooth with a diseased nerve, you'd probably lose that tooth. Today, with a special dental procedure called “root canal treatment,” your tooth can be saved. When a tooth is cracked or has a deep cavity, bacteria can enter the pulp tissue and germs can cause an infection inside the tooth. If left untreated, an abscess may form. If the infected tissue is not removed, pain and swelling can result. This can not only injure your jawbones, but it is also detrimental to your overall health. Root canal treatment involves one to three visits. During treatment, your general dentist or endodontist (a dentist who specializes in problems with the nerves of the teeth) removes the affected tissue. Next, the interior of the tooth will be cleaned and sealed. Finally, the tooth is filled with a dental composite. If your tooth has extensive decay, your doctor may suggest placing a crown to strengthen and protect the tooth from breaking. As long as you continue to care for your teeth and gums with regular brushing, flossing, and checkups, your restored tooth can last a lifetime."

      "acceptedAnswer": {
        "@type": "Answer",
        "text": "Sometimes brushing is not enough, especially when it comes to those hard-to-reach spots in your mouth. It is difficult for your toothbrush to get in-between the small cracks and grooves on your teeth. If left alone, those tiny areas can develop tooth decay. Sealants give your teeth extra protection against decay and help prevent cavities. Dental sealants are plastic resins that bond and harden in the deep grooves on your tooth’s surface. When a tooth is sealed, the tiny grooves become smooth and are less likely to harbor plaque. With sealants, brushing your teeth becomes easier and more effective against tooth decay. Sealants are typically applied to children’s teeth as a preventive measure against tooth decay after the permanent teeth have erupted. However, adults can also receive sealants on healthy teeth. It is more common to seal “permanent” teeth rather than “baby” teeth, but every patient has unique needs, and your dentist will recommend sealants on a case-by-case basis. Sealants last from three to five years, but it is fairly common to see adults with sealants still intact from their childhood. A dental sealant only provides protection when it is fully intact, so if your sealants come off, let your dentist know, and schedule an appointment for your teeth to be re-sealed."

      "acceptedAnswer": {
        "@type": "Answer",
        "text": "You no longer need to hide your smile because of gaps, chips, stains, or misshapen teeth. With veneers, you can easily correct your teeth’s imperfections to help you have a more confident, beautiful smile. Veneers are natural in appearance, and they are a perfect option for patients wanting to make minor adjustments to the look and feel of their smile. Veneers are thin, custom-made shells made from tooth-colored materials (such as porcelain), and they are designed to cover the front side of your teeth. To prepare for veneers, your doctor will create a unique model of your teeth. This model is sent to the dental technician to create your veneers. Before placing your new veneer, your doctor may need to conservatively prepare your tooth to achieve the desired aesthetic result. When your veneers are placed, you’ll be pleased to see that they look like your natural teeth. While veneers are stain-resistant, your doctor may recommend that you avoid coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco to maintain the beauty of your new smile."

      "name": "What are wisdom teeth, and why are they often recommended for removal? How is the extraction procedure typically performed, and what can patients expect during the healing process?",
      "acceptedAnswer": {
        "@type": "Answer",
        "text": "Wisdom teeth are types of molars found in the very back of your mouth. They usually appear in the late teens or early twenties, but may become impacted (fail to erupt) due to lack of room in the jaw or angle of entry. When a wisdom tooth is impacted, it may need to be removed. If it is not removed, you may develop gum tenderness, swelling, or even severe pain. Impacted wisdom teeth that are partially or fully erupted tend to be quite difficult to clean and are susceptible to tooth decay, recurring infections, and even gum disease. Wisdom teeth are typically removed in the late teens or early twenties because there is a greater chance that the teeth’s roots have not fully formed and the bone surrounding the teeth is less dense. These two factors can make extraction easier as well as shorten the recovery time. In order to remove a wisdom tooth, your dentist first needs to numb the area around the tooth with a local anesthetic. Since the impacted tooth may still be under the gums and embedded in your jaw bone, your dentist will need to remove a portion of the covering bone to extract the tooth. In order to minimize the amount of bone that is removed with the tooth, your dentist will often “section” your wisdom tooth so that each piece can be removed through a small opening in the bone. Once your wisdom teeth have been extracted, the healing process begins. Depending on the degree of difficulty related to the extraction, healing time varies. Your dentist will share with you what to expect and provide instructions for a comfortable, efficient healing process."
