Periodontists receive up to three years of additional, specialized training in treating periodontal disease and other conditions. Periodontists are also specialists in treating oral inflammation and any condition requiring either non-surgical treatment or oral plastic surgery. Oftentimes, periodontists are treating conditions caused by periodontal disease and its effects such as persistent bad breath or gum recession. Crown Lengthening Dental Implants Gum Grafting Periodontal Disease Treatment Scaling and Root Planing Crown Lengthening For patients who believe that their smile is too “gummy” or that their teeth are too short, we are proud to offer crown lengthening services to fix those concerns. Crown lengthening procedures are done to expose more of the tooth and remove extra gum tissue. By doing this, we can reshape your gums and help give your teeth the look and shape you desire. In addition to the life-changing results, crown lengthening is a minimally-invasive procedure that will allow for a more balanced, even smile. Before we begin treatment, we will first meet to learn more about your desired results as well as determine if crown lengthening is the best procedure for you. Factors such as oral hygiene and gum health will determine the best course of action and treatment plan. During the dental crown lengthening procedure, our team will remove excess gum and bone tissue to reshape the tooth to expose a more natural tooth. This procedure can be done to just one single tooth or several, or even to your entire gum line. These changes can be done for restorative or cosmetic purposes depending on your needs. The recovery time for the crown lengthening procedure is approximately three months. As your gums heal, you’ll be able to resume normal habits and functions. In recovery, you will be asked to avoid demanding activities during the first two to three days after your operation. Some patients report mild discomfort during the procedure and increased sensitivity after the treatment is complete, but with a personalized treatment plan we can help manage any discomfort and pain. Moving forward, practicing good oral hygiene is paramount. read more request an appointment Dental Implants We are proud to offer dental implants for our patients. Dental implants are roots placed in your mouth for either permanent teeth to be placed on or ones that you can remove. Dental implants are done to improve a patient’s smile and usually their self esteem. Having missing or bad teeth can be quite embarrassing. Dental implants also can be done to improve oral health. Many people find it easier to eat with dental implants. Their speech can also be improved. Dental implants are also more comfortable because they are made to become permanent. When done correctly, and with proper care, dental implants can last a patient’s whole life. It is still important to brush your teeth, floss, and use mouthwash when you have implants. Patients still need routine dental checkups to keep their implants healthy. read more request an appointment Gum Grafting Gum grafting treatment for receding gums works best for patients who are suffering from more extensive gum loss where gum disease cannot be resolved by a professional cleaning alone. This procedure can help repair the damaged area of the gums and work to prevent further gum tissue loss. In addition to stopping recession, gum graft treatment will better protect the roots of the teeth from decay by giving the patient more gum line, and reduce tooth sensitivity to hot and cold foods. There are three types of gum grafts: connective-tissue grafts, free gingival grafts, and pedicle grafts. Connective-tissue grafts are most commonly used because the procedure involves taking a flap of healthy tissue from the roof of your mouth then stitching it over the precise area suffering from an exposed root and gum recession. Free gingival grafts involve the same process as connective-tissue grafts except that the tissue is specifically taken from the palate of the mouth. Lastly, pedicle grafts use the tissue next to the affected tooth in need of repair. During a gum graft procedure, the patient doesn’t feel a thing as we use a local anesthetic to keep them pain-free. After the operation, the patient may experience some soreness and slight discomfort, which can be effectively treated with a combination of rest, cold compresses, and, if needed, prescription medication. With proper care, the gum graft will protect the previously exposed root and serve as a healthier gum line, restoring your smile and confidence. read more request an appointment Periodontal Disease Treatment Periodontal disease is a serious issue that affects many people’s lives. Luckily our experienced periodontists are capable of treating periodontal disease in our patients, a field in which they have rigorous training and education. The cleaning of calculus, or tartar, is a major component of treating periodontal disease. However, changes in the patient’s behavior are just as important. Making sure your dental hygiene habits are up to par is critical in the treatment of periodontal disease. Your teeth are meant to last a lifetime, so it is critical to properly care for them. If you have periodontal disease, don’t feel hopeless. It is a treatable disease, but one that requires the patient to be aware and active with their dental care. request an appointment Scaling and Root Planing Scaling and root planing are a more in-depth, thorough cleaning treatment recommended for patients who may be suffering from periodontal disease. Also known as gum disease, this type of gum infection is caused by bacteria and plaque forming on your teeth over time and causing inflammation. While serious, periodontal disease is treatable. However, it can lead to bone or tooth loss if not treated quickly. When your gums become inflamed, bacteria hides in pockets that trigger the gums to push away from the teeth. Once these layers or pockets have been formed, it is nearly impossible to clean them with just brushing alone. This is where scaling and root planing becomes necessary. During the scaling portion of this conventional periodontal therapy, our team will use a scaling tool to remove any plaque, bacteria, and tartar around the affected tooth and below the gumline all the way to the bottom of the infected pocket. After the scaling is complete, we will move onto root planing. The root planing technique is used to smooth out the tooth’s root and ultimately remove the pocket caused by bacteria. When the root has been effectively smoothed, the gums can be reattached and have a greater chance of fully healing. Some patients report mild discomfort during the procedure and increased sensitivity after the treatment is complete, but with a personalized treatment plan, we can help manage any discomfort and pain. Moving forward, practicing good oral hygiene is paramount for making sure that periodontal disease doesn’t become worse after seeking initial treatment at our office. read more request an appointment --> CONNECT WITH US We look forward to meeting you. They always say that a picture is worth a thousand words. We use our camera for just that reason. We can take a picture and show you what is going on with your mouth. You may not believe you have dental disease until you see the pictures. Our camera is also very helpful when we are tracking the disease’s progress. We can take before and after pictures to determine if the treatment is working. If you decide to get a complicated procedure, a picture may help you see what you really can’t see otherwise. request an appointment Laser Dentistry Laser dentistry is not very common, though there are many benefits to using laser during procedures. Wounds from the surgery heal much faster because there is less damage to the surrounding tissue. Lasers minimize bleeding and post-surgical bacterial infections. Often, anesthesia and sutures are not needed after procedures when a laser is used. Lasers can be used for many different dental procedures. It is an efficient way to find cavities. It can be used to fill them without the need for anesthesia. It can be used to remold gums that grow up and over a patient’s teeth. Many dentists use a laser for dental surgery, like cutting out extra tissue in the mouth, to remove tumors, and much more. Laser dentistry makes procedures much smoother, more efficient, and less painful for patients. People who are afraid or very anxious at the dentist should find dentists who offer laser dentistry. They will be surprised at how painless it can be to come to the dentist. read more request an appointment --> CONNECT WITH US We look forward to meeting you. We'd love to hear from you! Bridges Cracked Tooth Repair Dental Implants Implant Restoration Inlays and Onlays Bridges When your teeth are missing, it greatly affects your smile. At the same time, the missing tooth has the potential to negatively affect your oral hygiene because of unprotected gum exposure. Dental bridges are one of many options aimed at improving the appearance and function of your teeth by replacing the missing tooth or teeth. During your exam, we will discuss whether or not dental bridges are right for you. request an appointment Cracked Tooth Repair Cracked teeth can cause a variety of symptoms including pain while chewing, temperature sensitivities, and the release of biting pressure. It’s common for pain to come and go, which can make diagnosing the cause difficult. While you chew, cracked pieces of your tooth move, causing the pulp within the tooth may become irritated. When biting pressure is released, the crack can close quickly resulting in sharp pain. If left untreated, the pulp will eventually become damaged and the tooth will constantly hurt, even when you are not chewing. It is possible that cracks can lead to infection of the pulp tissue and can spread to the bone and gums surrounding the problem tooth. There are different types of cracks, and each should be evaluated to prevent tooth loss and infection. read more request an appointment Dental Implants When you have missing teeth, an alternative solution to dentures is dental implants. While dentures are removable, dental implants provide permanent new teeth to restore your mouth’s function and appearance. These checks are in an effort to keep you healthy and catch any problems with the implants. When you receive implants, we will guide you on how best to take care of them. This will help you minimize problems and be aware if any present themselves. If you think there is an issue with your current implants, please let us know so we can check them. At Serramonte Ridge Dental, we follow our ethical way of doing business when we approach implant restoration. This means that we put your health and well-being first. We always check your implants after we fit them, and we give you the information you need about your oral health and treatments. request an appointment Inlays and Onlays Dental inlays and onlays are considered a conservative method of treating damaged teeth. They are used instead of placing a crown. Some dentists even use inlays and onlays to treat tooth decay. Instead of filling in the tooth, your dentist may use dental inlays and onlays. Dental inlays and onlays are made in a dental lab and then fitted to your tooth. They are then bonded to your tooth. request an appointment --> CONNECT WITH US We look forward to meeting you. You may even notice the lesions on your tongue or on the floor of your mouth. It is recommended that you brush your teeth for two minutes (or longer), though most people rush through this time. You need to make sure that you reach every side of each tooth, including the inside and outside. To help keep your breath fresh, you should also brush your tongue. Then, you can begin flossing. request an appointment Root Canals Root canals are needed when decay and bacteria spread for too long without treatment. At a certain point, this decay makes it to the pulp inside the tooth. This pulp includes nerves, therefore infection generally causes a lot of pain. Since this is happening on the inside of the tooth, you won’t necessarily see the damage. Instead, you could feel it through pain and notice other signs that include bleeding, swelling and bad breath. request an appointment Sealants When we apply a dental sealant, we paint a plastic coating on top of your teeth. This makes your teeth smooth getting rid of the rough edges, depressions, and grooves that are commonly found on teeth. It is essentially a protective coating against tooth decay and cavities. The most common place to paint sealants is on back teeth since they are often irregular. They can also be very hard to reach, even if you brush your teeth regularly. We use it more on children though we do perform sealants on adults too! request an appointment Teeth Whitening A common request we receive is how to make a smile whiter and brighter. This is a relatively simple and quick treatment option that can be performed periodically. Certain foods and beverages, such as wine and coffee, stain the teeth and contribute to discoloration. The teeth whitening process provides a solution that lightens the shade of the teeth. Additionally, the process actually rids the teeth of plaque and tartar that tend to lead to dental problems. request an appointment TMJ Treatment At Serramonte Ridge Dental, we are proud to offer temporomandibular joint dysfunction, otherwise known as TMJ, treatments to provide relief for our patients. TMJ is caused by an inflammation in the temporomandibular joint, which acts as a sliding hinge that connects your jawbone to your skull. What are the symptoms of TMJ? TMJ causes pain and discomfort along the jawbone and can make it painful to even move your jaw. While jaw pain and discomfort don’t always equate to TMJ, if you are also experiencing headaches, trouble chewing, or pain in the face, jaw, and ear, you’re more than likely experiencing TMJ. request an appointment --> CONNECT WITH US We look forward to meeting you. All-On-4 Implants Bonding Dentures Denture Partials Full Mouth Reconstruction Invisalign Porcelain Crowns Smile Makeover Veneers ClearCorrect Aligners All-On-4 Implants All-on-4® treatment provides patients with a full-arch prosthesis over four implants on the day of surgery. All-on-4® is designed to give edentulous patients full function of their mouth and full mouth restoration. It’s heavily advertised as providing 4 implants, but some situations may require more. All-on-4® overdentures reduce the complexity of treatment, the number of surgeries, and the overall treatment time. It is less expensive compared with fixed implants. All-on-4® dental implants, also known as hybrid dentures, use high-end denture teeth and acrylic for the best aesthetics, making it the most cost effective choice for any future repairs. request an appointment Bonding Dental bonding is the procedure where we apply a tooth colored plastic material to a patient’s tooth. Using a special light, the material hardens and bonds the material to the tooth. Dental bonding is used to improve a patient’s smile. It can be used on cracked and decaying teeth. It also can be used for cavities. It can be used to change the shape and size of your teeth so you have a more uniform smile! It is also commonly used for receding gums by protecting the exposed teeth! request an appointment Dentures If you are missing teeth, dentures can provide a positive solution to improving your oral health. We are proud to provide dentures that are designed to fit your mouth for proper function and unique comfort. Following your appointment, we will provide you with information on at-home care for your dentures. We strongly recommend scheduling follow up appointments for periodic denture cleanings. request an appointment Denture Partials A removable partial denture is an optimal solution for patients who may be missing one or more teeth in a particular area of their mouth. Removable partial dentures are attached to a gum-colored base which may have a metal framework that helps to hold it in place against the surrounding teeth. These dentures serve to replace missing teeth, restore functionality, and generally improve oral health. When a tooth is lost, and the gap isn’t immediately filled, it can lead to the neighboring teeth to shift; this can create a significant change in your bite and can even cause long-term damage to your gums and jaw bone. Removable partial dentures are a less invasive method to replace and restore missing teeth than alternative solutions. While they are more cost-effective and less invasive than implants, removable partial dentures require frequent, lifetime upkeep and maintenance. Because these partial dentures are removable and essentially rest on your gums, they need to be frequently cleaned, just like your natural teeth. By cleaning your dentures regularly, you keep your gums healthy and your dentures looking as good as new. To begin treatment, we will determine if removable partial dentures are the best option for you. Factors such as oral hygiene, the location of the missing tooth gap(s), bone strength, and long-term viability for dentures all determine your treatment plan. Our team will start by taking dental impressions of your teeth which will serve as the mold used to create your dentures. Next, we will review the size, shape, and coloring of each replacement tooth to recreate your natural smile. Once these are determined, we send the molds to a dental lab which creates a mock-up partial denture for you. During a fitting appointment with our team, we will have you test out the mock-ups to check how they fit, look, and feel in your mouth. This is the time you and our team will make adjustments to the fit or color of the teeth before sending the mock-ups back to the lab for alterations. Remember, your absolute honesty is needed as your feedback shapes the final removable partial denture you will be receiving. Once the final changes have been made to the mock-up, the lab will custom build your dentures. After we receive the final design, your last fitting session will be to make small adjustments for comfort, bite, or fit which can all be made in-house by our team. read more request an appointment Full Mouth Reconstruction We usually recommend complex full-mouth rehabilitation when patients have multiple problems in their mouths. We help people who are suffering from gum disease, discoloration, tooth decay, crooked teeth, and other problems, usually all at the same time. Before we start your rehabilitation, we will need to do a thorough examination with X-rays to determine what treatments you will need. Since every mouth is different, we create a treatment plan just for you. request an appointment Invisalign Invisalign® is a modern alternative to straighten your teeth without wires or metal. Invisalign® involves a series of custom trays designed specifically for you and the plan your dentist or orthodontist creates to move your teeth. The trays are made from a smooth plastic that covers your teeth and gradually moves them into place. request an appointment Porcelain Crowns Getting porcelain crowns is the best way to have a very natural looking smile. They are used when simply filling in a tooth is not an option. There are times when they decay is so bad that we just have to use a porcelain crown. We also use them with severely damaged teeth or teeth that have already had multiple fillings. Porcelain crowns are attached right to your teeth so that they can function, even when you bite something really hard! There are several types of porcelain crowns so it is important to discuss which type is best for you with your dentist. request an appointment Smile Makeover A smile makeover uses cosmetic dental procedures to make you proud of your smile. We perform teeth whitening, along with other cosmetic procedures like veneers and tooth implants. Each smile makeover is different. We start by doing a thorough examination and decide what each patient wants and needs. We look at the color of your teeth and how they are all lined up. We check to see if there are any missing teeth or if any are cracked, chipped, or broken. Our goal is to give you a healthy and happy smile. We want you to have a bright smile, along with teeth that line up correctly and are aesthetically pleasing. We work with our patients to ensure their happiness. We will do whatever we can so that, when you leave our office, you will be completely happy with your smile. request an appointment Veneers Porcelain Veneers are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth changing their color, shape, size, or length. We recommend this treatment to anyone experiencing discoloration that cannot be fixed with whitening or if your teeth are damaged. Porcelain veneers are also an option if you’re unhappy with the shape or look of your natural teeth. request an appointment ClearCorrect Aligners Getting ClearCorrect aligners is an alternative to wearing braces. Your journey to a restful sleep starts here – call us now! What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) Sleep apnea is essentially your body choking on itself and causing repeated episodes of partial or complete suffocation sometimes lasting a minute or more. These choking and suffocating episodes repeat constantly throughout the night causing a myriad of health complications including increased risk of stroke, heart attack and even death. The cause of this collapse in the airway is usually due to the soft tissues in the mouth , tongue or throat closing down and blocking airflow during sleep. The first sign of this is usually snoring which happens when you are attempting to breathe through a narrow airway. If left untreated snoring often escalates to full OSA where the narrow airway is now completely blocked. Nearly 1 in 4 adults over 30 are unknowingly suffering from at least mild sleep apnea. Are you at risk? Do you snore loudly (louder than a person talking or loud enough to be heard through closed doors)? Do you often feel tired, fatigued or sleepy during the day? Has your spouse or bed partner ever observed you stop or pause breathing in your sleep? Do you have or are you being treated for high blood pressure? Are you overweight or obese? Are you over 50 years old? Is your neck circumference greater than 16 inches? Are you male? If you answered yes to two or more of the above questions, then you should have your sleep health evaluated. Don’t let sleep apnea steal your breath—seek help now. TREATMENT OPTIONS Oral Appliance Our practice specializes in fitting patients with a custom fabricated oral appliance to manage sleep apnea. The appliance works by holding your mandible (lower jaw) in a precise open and forward position and by doing so all the soft tissues in your throat and neck are no longer able to collapse and cause the nighttime choking and suffocating episodes. The appliance we make will be custom made for your teeth and will fit much like a sports mouth guard. Oral appliances are a very comfortable and easy to use solution for managing sleep apnea and snoring and they are also an excellent alternative to CPAP therapy for patients who find it difficult to tolerate. In 2015 the American Academy of Sleep Medicine issued updated practice parameters recommending the use of custom fabricated oral appliances made by specially trained dentists for patients with snoring and sleep apnea who prefer the mouthpiece over CPAP or who have tried CPAP and are unable to continue daily use. Am I a candidate for an oral appliance? Most people are great candidates for an oral appliance. The only way to tell for sure would be to come in for a complimentary consultation at our office. When you come in we will test your airway using our Eccovision Acoustic Diagnostic Imaging system and we may also send you home with a portable sleep apnea monitor. Once everything is reviewed the doctor will discuss treatment options with you. Not all oral appliances are the same. These devices are manufactured to strict standards and are FDA cleared specifically to manage Sleep Apnea. Additionally, we use state-of-the-art acoustic imaging technology to ensure your jaw is held in precisely the correct position with the appliance. “at home appliance kits” and other bulky non-custom devices may claim to help with snoring but are not nearly as comfortable or successful as the appliances we use. CPAP CPAP is the traditional gold standard for the management of sleep apnea. CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Air Pressure and it works by pumping room air through a hose into a nasal mask that is strapped to the patients head. Constant pressure in the airway pushes the collapsible tissues out of the way and maintains and open/stable airway. While highly effective at managing sleep apnea CPAP has proven to be difficult to tolerate for many patients and a large majority of CPAP users are “non-compliant” within 6 months. If you are having a hard time wearing your CPAP every night please contact us, there are other options and it is imperative that you do something to manage your OSA. Surgery There are a few surgical options designed to reduce or remove excess tissue in the airway. Our doctor will review and discuss these options with you if indicated. TECHNOLOGY Eccovision Acoustic Diagnostic Imaging System Our practice uses the Eccovision Acoustic Pharyngometer / Rhinometer system from Sleep Group Solutions to test our patients nasal and oral airways. The device sends sound waves into the airway and the reflected sound waves are measured by the machine to tell us how big the airway is. The Rhinometer measures the nasal airway and the Pharyngometer measures the oral airway. Both systems are FDA cleared and a highly effective way for us to identify the site and severity of airway collapse as it related to snoring and sleep related breathing problems. --> CONNECT WITH US We look forward to meeting you.
