We're a leader in creating and scaling sustainable access to high quality eye care in remote and underserved communities around the world. Brillando We're bringing eye care to the doorsteps of 23.7 million people – 17 million Guatemalans and 6.7 million Paraguayans. Seva’s time-tested methodology for delivering world-class eye care at volume to underserved communities will eliminate avoidable blindness in Guatemala and Paraguay within 5 years. Here's how: Our Vision Centers are permanent, local clinics equipped to meet 80% of eye care needs, and refer patients who require more advanced care to nearby hospitals. Because locals can go to a Vision Center without having to travel far, they make eye care more accessible to women and other underserved people while spreading awareness and creating jobs that strengthen the local economy. We train and create jobs for ophthalmic support staff to address basic eye health conditions and refer patients who need more advanced care. This greatly reduces the workload for ophthalmologists, who can now focus on more advanced cases, and creates more jobs at less cost. We're also improving efficiency by training and mentoring existing eye care providers in the design, management, and implementation of eye care programs. We prioritize eye care for children – from screening and early diagnosis to referrals, treatments, and long-term followups. Our programs are embedded in schools and local community networks to increase eye care awareness and ensure that children with vision problems get the care they need for a bright future. Our new portable retina camera is part of our technology toolkit to reach remote patients. We use tele-ophthalmology technology to provide patients in remote areas with access to eye care specialists who have become much more efficient as a result. Our investment in reducing the cost of intraocular lenses used for cataract surgery to just $2 per lens has allowed millions of people to see again who couldn’t previously afford the $300-$2,000 price tag of other major lens manufacturers. We continue to expand access for underserved populations by greatly lowering the cost of essential eye care medications. We are an organization dedicated to evidence-based public health research. It was difficult, at times a burden, and often lonely. Victoria’s story is all too common. A 15-minute cataract surgery, a pair of eyeglasses, or medication is all that stands between a lifetime of darkness and a lifetime of sight for millions of people living with vision loss. People who can see and go back to work, learn, and lead independent lives. Her parents saw a flyer for our partner clinic, where Victoria visited and received a cataract surgery through the generosity of Seva supporters. Victoria went from a year of living in complete darkness to a lifetime of sight – after only 15-minutes on the operating table. Seva's Partner in Guatemala: Visualiza Visualiza Clínica Médica Oftalmológica , known simply as Visualiza, is a leading eye hospital in Guatemala and the rural Petén region. Visualiza works to prevent and cure blindness caused by major conditions including cataract and refractive errors. Founded in 1997, the hospital has been actively refining its unique community-oriented low cost and free service system. Although Visualiza employs only 4% of the nation’s ophthalmologists, the organization performs over 36% of all cataract surgeries in Guatemala. Visualiza’s hospitals provide private care alongside free vision services for their low-income patients. Seva has been partners with Visualiza since 2006, working to spread their model of universal access to service. Visualiza serves as a mentor to five mentee hospitals in Latin America and the Caribbean, including Fundación Visión. Seva provides direct support for Vizualiza's clinical services and school screenings that help reduce avoidable blindness across Guatemala and restore sight to some of the country's most vulnerable populations, including women and children in rural communities. Seva is committed to augmenting Visualiza's service capacity with a focus on local staff development and management training. With Seva's ongoing support for skill-based training, Visualiza has become a resource to improve other eye care centers in Latin America. Seva's Partner in Paraguay: Fundación Visión Established more than three decades ago, Fundación Visión conducts 50% of all cataract surgeries in Paraguay. Fundación Visión boasts a team of 300 medical professionals, project managers, and surgeons working at clinics across the nation. Seva has partnered with Fundación Visión since 2011. Together they have increased the reach of eye care services in Paraguay, making them available to more people who could not afford the services. Over the past two years, they worked together to complete the Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. Uma's expertise in capacity building and stakeholder management has been instrumental in driving program implementation and improving eye health services across various regions. She is passionate about leveraging her optometry expertise to enhance eye health programming and is committed to making a positiveimpact on community eye health services. Uma holds a Master of Science in Optometry and Vision Sciences from the prestigious University of Hyderabad, where she developed a strong foundation in eye care and public health. She combines academic excellence with practical experience. She also earned an MBA in Marketing and HR from Utkal University, further honing her management skills. Outside of her professional endeavors, Uma enjoys being in nature, exploring new places, gardening, and playing with her toddler, her favorite pastime in recent times. × Praful Lal Shrestha Administrator, Program, Nepal Praful is a seasoned professional with a rich background spanning various roles in development and entrepreneurship across Nepal. Edina and her husband owned a restaurant but they were forced to close it because she could no longer work and care for their children. After Edina's cataract surgery they reopened their restaurant and their son could go back to school. Meet Edina from Tanzania Leads to Education and Opportunity Globally, at least 450 million children have a sight condition that needs treatment, with 90 million children living with some form of sight loss. 448 million children and adolescents have refractive errors. Children like Milka, who was diagnosed with severe nearsightedness, will be able to make the most of her education with clear vision. Those who have their sight restored are given an average of 50 years of sight, allowing them to build bright futures. Meet Milka from Burundi Empowers Women and Girls Seva focuses on community-based approaches that tackle the social and economic barriers preventing women and girls from getting the care they need. Women and girls like Rattana, with her classmates and teachers, receive essential eye care to be able to learn, teach and lead healthy and productive lives. Meet Rattana from Cambodia Creates the Ripple Effect Restoring sight to one person can help support an entire community. 75% of visually impaired people are assisted with everyday living by a relative, neighbor or a child. Since 1978, we have worked with local communities in more than 20 countries to develop self-sustaining eye care programs. Together we provide critical eye care to underserved communities, especially women, children, and indigenous peoples. It’s a life built on grit, love, and long days, but for 20 years, there was a missing piece at the center of their home. At 74, Phen Mao lived in a blur. That’s the reality for more than a billion people who live with a vision impairment. Of those billion people, almost 90% of them live in developing countries, where not being able to see often means a life of poverty and dependence. Now imagine that help was in reach in the form of a simple surgery, a pair of glasses, or medicine. Seva makes it possible for people to get that help, regardless of their economic status or where they live. The Numbers To date, Seva has provided eye care services to more than 50 million people, 3.5 million people in the last year alone. The work spans more than 20 countries. People like these students in Cambodia receive essential eye care to be able to learn and lead healthy and fulfilling lives. Where You Come In Your project will bring awareness to the challenge facing millions around the world as well as right here in the US. We hope that once people know about preventable blindness and how inexpensive and effective a cure is, they’ll be inspired to help out. What resulted was the Seva (Sanskrit for “selfless service”) Foundation, formed with the purpose of ridding the world of preventable blindness. When you join the Seva Squad, you’ll follow in the path of some amazing people. The founder, Dr. Larry Brilliant, eradicated smallpox in India. Co-founder Baba Ram Dass was a beloved spiritual teacher, guru, and author. Sixties icon Wavy Gravy is a co-founder; he aslo established Camp Winnarainbow, based on equity, inclusion and interdependence. While working away in his garage in the late 1970s, Steve Jobs made the first significant donation to help start Seva. If you’re in middle school or high school (13-18 years of age), you can apply to be on the Seva Squad as an ambassador for the Seva Foundation. As an ambassador, you’ll use your unique skills and talent to raise awareness around Seva's mission to end preventable blindness, whether that’s completing a virtual physical challenge, creating a video, making a craft, or something completely different. It’s up to you! As an ambassador, you’ll: Complete a project that communicates the importance of eye care for everyone, everywhere in the world. Projects can be physical, artistic, maker-based, basically whatever you are good at. Some suggestions for projects are listed on The Challenges .
