There will only be a joint bi-lingual worship service at 9:30AM on October 13th, 2019 at SFBC due to the family retreat. --> THE GOSPEL What is the Gospel? What It Means to Be a Christian Being a Christian is more than identifying yourself with a particular religion or affirming a certain value system. Being a Christian means you have embraced what the Bible says about God, mankind, and salvation. Consider the following truths found in the Bible. God Is Sovereign Creator Contemporary thinking says man is the product of evolution. But the Bible says we were created by a personal God to love, serve, and enjoy endless fellowship with Him. The New Testament reveals it was Jesus Himself who created everything (John 1:3; Colossians 1:16). Therefore, He also owns and rules everything (Psalm 103:19). That means He has authority over our lives and we owe Him absolute allegiance, obedience, and worship. God Is Holy God is absolutely and perfectly holy (Isaiah 6:3); therefore He cannot commit or approve of evil (James 1:13). God requires holiness of us as well. First Peter 1:16 says, You shall be holy, for I am holy. Mankind Is Sinful According to Scripture, everyone is guilty of sin: There is no man who does not sin (1 Kings 8:46). That doesn’t mean we’re incapable of performing acts of human kindness. But we’re utterly incapable of understanding, loving, or pleasing God on our own (Romans 3:10-12). Sin Demands a Penalty God’s holiness and justice demand that all sin be punished by death (Ezekiel 18:4). That’s why simply changing our patterns of behavior can’t solve our sin problem or eliminate its consequences. Jesus Is Lord and Savior Romans 10:9 says, If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved. Even though God’s justice demands death for sin, His love has provided a Savior who paid the penalty and died for sinners (1 Peter 3:18). Christ’s death satisfied the demands of God’s justice, and Christ’s perfect life satisfied the demands of God’s holiness (2 Corinthians 5:21), thereby enabling Him to forgive and save those who place their faith in Him (Romans 3:26). The Character of Saving Faith True faith is always accompanied by repentance from sin. Repentance is agreeing with God that you are sinful, confessing your sins to Him, and making a conscious choice to turn from sin (Luke 13:3, 5; 1 Thessalonians 1:9), pursue Christ (Matthew 11: 28-30; John 17:3), and obey Him (1 John 2:3). It isn’t enough to believe certain facts about Christ. Even Satan and his demons believe in the true God (James 2:19), but they don’t love and obey Him. True saving faith always responds in obedience (Ephesians 2:10). Copyright, 2016 Grace Community Church. All Rights Reserved. Used by permission. We are glad you are considering San Francisco Bible Church as a place of worship for you. You will find believers here at SFBC to be friendly people who desire to know God, live like Christ, and share their faith with others. SEE WHAT WE BELIEVE MEET OUR LEADERS History Founded in 1964 by Pastor Sen Wong as a church plant of Chinese Bible Mission, San Francisco Bible Church finds its roots in a legacy of strong Biblical teaching. Beginning with services at Hamilton Square Baptist Church, the first Sunday School class comprised of seven high school girls. Over the years, SFBC has been blessed by a number of pastors who faithfully taught God’s word to our growing community of believers. Our senior pastor, Henry Tam, started his ministry at SFBC in 1999. John 1 teaches that Jesus Christ is the Word that brings eternal and abundant life. Our mission and motto is to glorify God by “Holding Fast the Word of Life”. This we do in obedience to Christ’s command to make disciples of all the nations. [email protected] The purpose of the SFBC men’s ministry is to make disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ by encouraging men towards being established in God’s word; pursuing holiness in integrity through the Holy Spirit, deepening our relationship with God; and strengthening our relationship in the home, the church, and the world. Women’s
[email protected] The overall mission of the SFBC Women’s Ministry is to provide opportunities for women of SFBC (in all seasons of life) to grow toward spiritual maturity as disciples of Jesus Christ through discipleship, Bible Study and application, fellowship, and outreach to the glory of God. (Titus 2:3-5) Adorned
[email protected] Adorned is a women’s Bible study/fellowship group that meets online on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays evening (7:30pm to 10:00pm) of each month. Together, we study God’s Word and encourage each other in our different walks of life to become women of excellence in God’s sight. Philippians 1:9,10 “And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ.” Close Knit Circle
[email protected] Close Knit Circle is a small group consisting of women who meet weekly to knit. The 2-hour meeting begins with a devotion from God’s Word where we learn how to love each order as Christ has loved us. While knitting together, God would use our conversations with one another to deepen our friendship. Please email
[email protected] for more information, location and time of the meeting. Heart to Heart (H2H)
[email protected] Heart-to-Heart (H2H) is a one-on-one discipleship ministry that pairs a spiritually mature woman with a spiritually younger woman in the faith. They meet regularly for a minimum of three months, building a relationship as they walk through a specific area of Christian growth. The goal is to grow in love for God and love for others, which is the heart of what it means to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord. (Colossians 1:10) For more information, please visit https://go.sfbible.org/H2H . Ladies’ Fellowship Events
[email protected] The Women’s Ministry Events Team currently organizes two events annually in the months of May and December where women of all ages at SFBC will gather together for worship and fellowship. The emphasis of the May event is for spiritual growth and the December event is for evangelism and outreach. Events details can be found in the church weekly bulletin and website in the months leading up to it. Moms Encouraging Moms (MEM)
[email protected] MEM is a group of moms who are committed to encouraging one another as we raise our children in the Christian faith. We meet monthly for an evening book study in addition to daytime meetings for fellowship and training. These are great opportunities to learn from other moms, discuss how we can practically apply what we learn, and encourage one another as we disciple and instruct our children in the Lord. Phileo Phish
[email protected] Phileo Phish is a bible study for women age 18 and older. We meet every Monday at church from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Titus 2 Small Groups (T2)
[email protected] Titus 2 small groups meet weekly for a season of 3 to 4 months during the year for intentional discipleship and spiritual encouragement. Comprised of multi-generational women, we gather to build relationships and apply God’s truth in practical daily living as older women come alongside younger women according to Titus 2:3-5, “that the Word of God may not be dishonored”. The heart of this ministry is to help women grow in their love for God and love for others. Mercy
[email protected] Mercy ministry seeks to extend the love and compassion of Jesus Christ to the suffering. We meet monthly to learn what the Bible teaches us about mercy, pray, and raise awareness of issues concerning the fatherless, orphans, widows, victims of human trafficking, and the poor. Mercy provides various opportunities for the church body to partner with affiliated local organizations which serve the most vulnerable in our community. Our greatest desire is to minister to people while bringing the message of hope and salvation in the gospel. Missions
[email protected] Our Missions Support Team aims to make disciples for all nations — that those disciples may make more disciples of all nations. We also partner with various missionaries around the world. Prayer
[email protected] A body of believers desiring to be devoted to prayer before our sovereign and gracious God. The evenings begin with a short devotional/reading, followed by a time of adoration, thanksgiving, and intercession for the needs of our church, city, and world. All are welcome to join! Please send an email for more information or to submit a prayer request. SAN FRANCISCO BIBLE CHURCH 401 Taraval Street San Francisco, CA 94116 415-387-3630

In his last year at college, he answered God’s call to ministry while on a mission trip to Indonesia. After graduating with a BS in Computer Science, he went on to receive his M.Div. at The Master’s Seminary. He then returned to his home church in Seattle where he was ordained to pastoral ministry. Pastor Henry is blessed to be married to his wife Cindy and to raise their three children together. He has been serving at SF Bible since 1999. His passion in ministry is to explain the word of God so that the people of God can grow in love for God and our neighbors. His other interests include drinking coffee, eating barbecue (esp. his wife’s), and admiring God’s creation. Raymond Fung Associate Pastor Raymond was born and raised in Oakland, California and grew up going to a Christian school where he received Christ as his Savior. He received his Bachelor of Arts in English from California State University, Northridge. He got his Master of Divinity at the Master’s Seminary, and is currently in the Doctorate of Ministry at the Master’s Seminary. Ray is happily married to Kelly since 2016, and they have three children. His interests include exercising, reading, gaming, and spending time with his family. Roger Jeong Associate Pastor Born and raised in San Francisco, Pastor Roger grew up in a Christian home. He repented of his sins and placed his faith in Christ in high school. It was during his high school years that he began to aspire to pastoral ministry. Through the faithful ministry of the church and the pastoral staff at SFBC, Pastor Roger grew in his faith and was encouraged to pursue further theological education and training. He received his BA in Bible Exposition from The Master’s College, his M.Div from The Master’s Seminary, and his D.Min in Biblical Counseling from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has served at SFBC as a part of the pastoral staff since 2017. Pastor Roger is happily married to his wife Stacey. Theo Low Associate Pastor Theo was born and raised in San Francisco. During High School, he felt the desire to pursue full-time ministry. Striving towards that goal, Theo received his Bachelor of Arts in Bible Exposition from The Master’s University and then went on to get his Master of Divinity from The Master’s Seminary. When he is not doing ministry, he enjoys hanging out with his wife and kids. Together they enjoy rooting for bay area sports teams, collecting sneakers, Pokémon cards, and Funko Pops.
There will only be a joint bi-lingual worship service at 9:30AM on October 13th, 2019 at SFBC due to the family retreat. --> WHAT WE BELIEVE Articles of Faith of San Francisco Bible Church I. The Bible We believe the 39 books of the Old Testament and the 27 books of the New Testament to be the verbal plenary inspired word of God, the final authority for faith and life, inerrant in the original writings, infallible and God-breathed. The only proper interpretation of Scripture is through the literal, historical, grammatical method. II Tim 3:16, 17; II Pet 1:20, 21; Mt 5:18; Jn 16:12, 13. II. The Godhead We believe God is spirit and is sovereign, by which there cannot exist another sovereign being, working all things according to the counsel of His own immutable and most righteous decree. Ps 115:3; Eph 1:11; Jn 4:24; Is 45:5, 6, 21; Rom 8:31; Mal 3:6. We believe in one living and true God, eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – co-eternal in being, co-identical in nature, co-equal in power and glory and having the same essence, attributes, and perfections. Deut 6:4; II Cor 13:14. We believe God created, made out of nothing, the heavens and the earth and all things therein, and this for the manifestation of the glory of His eternal power, wisdom, and goodness. Heb 1:2; Gen 1; Jn 1:2-3; Col 1:16; Rom 1:20; Heb 11:3. III. The Person and Work of Christ We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, having been conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary, became man, without ceasing to be God, in order that He might reveal God and redeem sinful men. Jn 1:1, 2, 14; Lk 1:35; Mt 20:28; Jn 1:18; Heb 1:3. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ accomplished our redemption through His death on the cross as a substitutionary sacrifice of atonement; and was raised physically from the dead because of our justification. Rom 3:24-26; I Pet 2:24; Eph 1:7; I Pet 1:3-5; Rom 4:25; Heb 9:12. IV. The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit We believe that the Holy Spirit is the person of the Trinity who convicts the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment; and that He is the supernatural agent in regeneration, baptizing all believers into the body of Christ, indwelling and sealing them unto the day of redemption. Jn 16:8-11; II Cor 3:6; I Cor 12:12-14; Rom 8:9; Eph 1:13, 14; Titus 3:5. We believe that He is the divine teacher who guides believers into all truths. Jn 16:13; I Jn 2:20, 27; I Cor 2:14. We believe that it is the privilege and responsibility of every believer to be filled with the Spirit. Eph 5:18; Gal 5:16, 25; Rom 8:4. V. The Total Depravity of Man We believe that man was created in the image and likeness of God, but that in Adam’s sin the whole human race fell, inherited a sinful nature, and became alienated from God; and thus man is totally depraved, and, of himself, utterly unable to remedy his lost condition. Gen 1:26, 27; Rom 3:9-12,22, 23; Rom 5:12; Rom 8:7; Eph 2:1-3, 12. VI. Salvation We believe that salvation is the gift of God extended to man by grace and received through personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, whose precious blood was shed on the cross to the satisfaction of God’s righteousness for the forgiveness of our sins. Eph 2:8- 10; Jn 1:12; Eph 1:7; I Pet 1:18, 19; Rom 3:25, 26; I Jn 2:2. VII. The Eternal Security and Assurance of Believers We believe that all believers, once saved, are kept by God’s power and are thus secure in Christ forever. They can not lose their salvation. Jn 6:37-40; Jn 10:27- 30; Rom 8:1, 38, 39; I Cor 1:4-8; I Pet 1:5. We believe that the testimony of God’s Word clearly forbids the use of our security as a license for sin. Titus 2:11-15; Rom 6; Rom 13:13, 14. We believe that God is in the process of conforming all believers into the image of Christ and this transformation is evidence of the believer’s salvation. The assurance of a believer’s salvation comes from the fruit of obedience to the Lord. Rom 8:29; II Cor 3:18; Mt 7:15-27; Jn 15:8; Jam 2:14-26; 1 Jn 2:3-6. VIII. The New Nature of the Believer We believe that every believer is a new creation in Christ, with provision made for certain victory of the new man over the old man through the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit; and that all claims of complete eradication of the sinful nature in this life are unscriptural. Rom 6:13; 8:12-13; 2 Cor 5:17; Gal 5:16-25; Eph 4:22-24; Col 3:9-10; I Pet 1:14-16; I Jn 3:5-9. IX. Separation We believe that all believers are set apart from sin to God and thus called saints (holy ones). Christians are to live in such a manner as not to bring reproach upon their Savior and Lord. God commands believers to separate from all religious apostasy of doctrines or practices; all worldly and sinful pleasures, practices and associations. I Cor 5:9-13; II Cor 6:14-7:1; II Tim 3:1-5; Rom 12:1- 2; 14:13; I Tim 3:7; I Jn 2:15-17; II Jn 9-11. X. Missions & Evangelism We believe that Christ has commissioned all believers to witness by life and by word the gospel to all mankind. Mt 28:18-20; Mk 16:15; Acts 1:8; II Cor 5:19, 20. XI. The Gifts of the Holy Spirit We believe that the Holy Spirit has sovereignly given to every individual believer a unique gift[s] for the purpose of building up the church. We believe that there are two types of spiritual gifts: permanent and temporary. Permanent gifts continue throughout the church age. Temporary gifts such as speaking in tongues and the working of sign miracles gradually ceased as the New Testament Scriptures were completed and their authority became established. 1 Cor 12:4-11; 13:8-10, 2 Cor 12:12, Eph 4:7-12, Heb 2:3-4. XII. The Church We believe that the Church which is made up of all born-again persons of this present age is a group of people called out of the world by God and placed into the body of Christ as His espoused bride. Eph 1:22, 23; 5:25-26; I Cor 12:12-14; II Cor 11:2; I Pet 2:9-10. We believe that God establishes and continues local churches devoted to teaching the Word of God. Acts 14:27; 20:17, 28-32; I Tim 3:1-13; Titus 1:5-11. We believe local churches exist to bring every believer to maturity in Christ so as to reflect the glory of Christ, that God may be glorified. Jn 17; Eph 4; Col 1:28. We believe that every believer is to exhort and provoke one another to love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together. Heb 10:24, 25. XIII. Church Ordinances We believe that the mode of baptism is immersion in water; a portrait of our association with the death, burial, and resurrection of our Savior. Mt 28:19; Rom 6:3-5. We believe that the Lord’s Supper (Communion) is the commemoration of His Death until He comes. I Cor 11:23-32. XIV. Dispensationalism We believe in the dispensational approach to interpreting the Scriptures, specifically that ethnic Israel and the church remain distinct. Man’s sin, and God’s remedy for it, have been progressively revealed in several dispensations; and yet, the Scriptures present one unified plan of salvation from sin. We recognize and teach the covenants as well, along with their significance in the revealed plan of God to save by grace a people for Himself. Mt 28:19, 20; Acts 2:41, 42; 18:8; I Cor 11:23-26. XV. Satan We believe that Satan is a personal being created holy; who rebelled against God and introduced sin into the human race by his temptation of Adam & Eve. He is the declared enemy of God, the accuser of the believers, the one blinding men to the truth of God, and leading them into sin. He is the god of this age and the prince of this world. He shall be eternally punished in the Lake of Fire. Giving to the Lord’s work is an act of worship for the followers of Christ. In response to God’s love for us in His Son, we love Him in return. Part of that love involves furthering His kingdom work through the offering of our lives and our possessions. We worship the Lord when we offer our lives as a holy and living sacrifice, leading to a life of faithful service to Him. When we give financially, we glorify God, as we give purposefully, voluntarily, and cheerfully. We give not in order to receive, but we give because we have received God’s abundant grace.
