Did you know most domestic interstate travel and all international travel requires a health certificate for your pet?  Our veterinarians have obtained USDA accreditation and maintain valid licenses to sign off on travel documents. Whether you are traveling up the coast or across the world, our team can ensure your travel documents are in order for your four legged family member. Know Before You Go Travel requirements vary greatly depending on your destination. Most domestic interstate travel is simple and can be completed in one visit. Some destinations, like Australia for example, require an extensive protocol of vaccinations, lab tests, internal/external parasite treatments, and import permitting which takes 180+ days to complete all necessary steps. The USDA has a very informative website that will help you identify the timeline needed and necessary steps to take before you make your travel plans. While we are here to help, if is your responsibility to ensure you fully understand and comply with all requirements. Airline Requirements Airlines also have their own requirements for pets traveling onboard or in cargo. We are happy to complete any necessary forms they provide you, though, we cannot obtain these on your behalf. Check in with your airline's customer service team before scheduling your appointment. Professional International Transporters While we do not specifically endorse any travel logistics company, our clients have provided positive feedback utilizing these third parties to assist with relocating internationally. They will partner with you along the way to ensure a safe and smooth travel plan for your pet. Contact them directly to discuss the services they provide and to obtain a quote.  AVICO Logistic Services   Pet Express Ask the Experts USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection South San Francisco Office (650) 876-9358 Helpful Resources 373 West Portal Ave | San Francisco, CA 94127 | (415) 742-5961 | [email protected] Copyright © 2022 Healthy Pets Veterinary Hospital - All Rights Reserved. Sit. Heal. Come. Sit. Heal. Come. Sit. Heal. Cold Laser therapy What Is Cold Laser Therapy? Healthy Pets offers laser therapy as an option for the treatment of infections, stubborn wounds, and mobility issues.    Laser Therapy, or “photobiomodulation”, is the use of specific wavelengths of light (red and near-infrared) to create therapeutic effects. These effects include improved healing time, pain reduction, increased circulation, and decreased swelling. Laser Therapy has been widely utilized in Europe by physical therapists, nurses, and doctors as far back as the 1970s. Now, after FDA clearance in 2002, Laser Therapy is being used extensively in the United States. In recent years, veterinarians have celebrated the advancements made on treating pets using this technology.    There is little or no sensation during treatment. Occasionally the patient feels mild, soothing warmth, or tingling. Areas of pain or inflammation may be sensitive briefly before pain reduction.   The typical treatment is less than 15 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated. The treatment duration varies upon the severity of the condition.    Pets will often feel improvement after the first treatment; however, sometimes they will not feel improvement for a number of treatments. Each treatment is cumulative and results can vary.   Read what AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) has to say about laser therapy on their website .   Frequency Your pet's veterinarian will custom tailor a treatment plan for your pet's needs. Generally 2 sessions per week for 2-4 weeks and then maintenance sessions ever 1-4 weeks thereafter.   373 West Portal Ave | San Francisco, CA 94127 | (415) 742-5961 | [email protected] Copyright © 2022 Healthy Pets Veterinary Hospital - All Rights Reserved. Sit. Heal. Come. Sit. Heal. Come. Sit. Heal. Acupuncture What is Acupunture? Acupuncture has been used to successfully treat a large number of ailments and diseases including: arthritis, seizures, inflammatory bowel disease, vomiting, diarrhea, kidney disease, lick granulomas, inappropriate urination, incontinence, constipation, mega colon and anesthetic accidents and emergencies. Acupuncture treats disease by placing thin needles into specific acupuncture points in order to remove energy blockages which helps to rebalance the energy (Chi) in the body. The removal of these blockages allows the energy to flow in a more balanced manner down energy pathways known as meridians or channels. Like most alternative modalities, a single treatment rarely provides a lasting cure. If no significant improvement is seen after six to eight treatments, the likelihood for success with this technique decreases. However, many patients experience marked improvement after the third or fourth treatment. Acupuncture offers a very safe medical approach for animals. Side effects are rare. An animal's condition may seem worse for up to 48 hours after a session. Other animals may become sleepy or lethargic for 24 hours after acupuncture. These effects are an indication that some of the physiological changes are happening, and are most often followed by an improvement in the animal's condition. Availability Acupuncture services are provided by Dr. Adam and Dr. Samantha.  373 West Portal Ave | San Francisco, CA 94127 | (415) 742-5961 | [email protected] Copyright © 2022 Healthy Pets Veterinary Hospital - All Rights Reserved. In House diagnostics Blood Analysis With state of the art in house veterinary analyzers we can collect blood samples from your pet during your visit and have results in minutes. With our IDEXX analyzers we can run CBCs (complete blood counts), chemistries, and electrolytes, as well as rapid tests to screen for heartworm, tick borne diseases, FeLV (feline leukemia virus), and FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus). For testing that cannot be performed at our hospital, samples are picked up twice daily ensuring timely processing and interpretation. Our relationships with outside veterinary laboratories provides access to pathologists and other specialists as partners in your pet's health care.  Digital Radiology Digital radiology (xrays) at our practice provides immediate imaging as another diagnostic tool. The images provide a picture of internal organs and bones. Modern radiographic technologies take high-quality pictures helping veterinarians make correct inferences and recommend proper treatments. The digital images can be easily transmitted to Board Certified Veterinary Radiologists for secondary review. We work closely with a radiology group providing another partnership in your pet's health care. Microscopic Evaluation Our vets are trained and practiced in completing in house cytology. They may collect samples from your pet during your visit to review using our microscope allowing them to diagnose and treat your pet's condition.  Ultrasonography An ultrasound is another non-invasive tool that allows your pet's veterinarian to view internal organs with greater precision. Often times we will call in a Board Certified Veterinary Radiologist to complete more thorough diagnostic scans. These procedures are generally performed with little to no sedation, depending on patient compliance. Results are relayed to your vet in real time so that a treatment plan can be devised same day. 373 West Portal Ave | San Francisco, CA 94127 | (415) 742-5961 | [email protected] Copyright © 2022 Healthy Pets Veterinary Hospital - All Rights Reserved. Sit. Heal. Come. Sit. Heal. Come. Sit. Heal. Insurance There are many pet insurance options these days.  Ultimately it comes down to finding one that works for your coverage needs and budget.  A good place to start is to check out Pet Insurance Review or the Pawlicy Advisor website. How Does Insurance Work? You pay upfront costs directly to the veterinary provider and then submit a claim along with a paid invoice for reimbursement. Most insurance companies will review and make payments to you in 1-7 days.   Coverage There are different types of plans and coverage.  Plan types include wellness vs. accident and injury. Coverage types include reimbursement based on a fee schedule vs. a flat rate percentage for reimbursement. Claim Process Simply provide us with a signed claim form so we can upload to your pet's medical record. Ask us to submit your claim at the conclusion of your visit and we will prepare the form and submit,  generally within 72 hours.   We are happy to assist with your claims for any services or products provided at our hospital. For claims related to purchases and visits outside our hospital, we ask that you manage those on your own.  Client Favorites We see a majority of our clients using Trupanion , Embrace , Fetch (Previously PetPlan), and Pets Best but there are over a dozen of them out there. Some clients get discounts or deals through their employer, which is worth exploring through your company's HR, Benefits, or Employee Relations departments.   Trupanion Express While we will help submit claims to any insurance provider you choose, there are some added benefits to using Trupanion at our hospital. Trupanion has an "Exam Day Offer" where you can enroll in a plan and waive the 30 day waiting period if you sign up within 24 hours from the time of your visit. If you are interested in signing up, let us know so we can coordinate this with your next scheduled visit.  Our medical record system is linked with Trupanion making claim and record submission a breeze!   For procedures that are scheduled in the future, we can submit a pre-authorization claim to find out what coverage you are eligible for before moving forward.  Where to Go From Here? We would recommend getting some quotes and comparing costs and plan details. Things to consider are monthly premium costs, how they pay out claims (fee schedule vs. flat rate reimbursement, the latter seems like a better option so you know what you are getting), and of course deductibles. Some companies have a yearly deductible which you have to meet each year vs. deductibles for the lifetime of the plan. Some deductibles are per diagnosis as well.  Alternative to Insurance Some clients have created savings accounts just for their pets. Instead of paying $50-$100 a month for insurance they put it away each month for a rainy day. Whatever route you choose, you will thank yourself down the road that you planned ahead.   373 West Portal Ave | San Francisco, CA 94127 | (415) 742-5961 | [email protected] Copyright © 2022 Healthy Pets Veterinary Hospital - All Rights Reserved. Communication Epectations We strive to reply to all phone and email messages within 24 hours, though it may take longer if your pet's veterinarian needs to be consulted. Your pet's veterinarian is generally in the office 3-4 days per week in which case it may take up to 72 hours to get a response.  Note we are not in the office on Sundays and federally observed holidays.   Drop-Offs Appointments scheduled as a drop off are subject to a $25 fee for boarding. For regularly scheduled appointments we ask that you be present and available for hand off at the conclusion of your pet's visit.  If not present and available a $25 drop off fee will be assessed for boarding.    In Person Visits Please visit https://sfhealthypets.com/visiting-our-hospital for our current protocols. Respectful Conduct To have a successful veterinarian-client-patient-relationship it is paramount that we mutually trust and respect each other. When trust and/or respect is lost, it is in our mutual best interests to discontinue the relationship. Healthy Pets reserves the right to discontinue the veterinary-client-patient-relationship when we feel we are no longer a good match. Healthy Pets seeks to provide a welcoming and safe environment for our clients, patients, and staff. As such, we have created a Zero-Tolerance Policy for abusive behavior. Behavior that will not be tolerated includes, but is not limited to, offensive or foul language, harsh tones and communication styles, hostile verbal attacks, angry outbursts, direct or implied threats to our personal safety, direct or implied threats to damage our reputation, actual damage to our reputation, aggressive or menacing behavior toward people or pets, destruction of our property, harassment of any kind including repeated calls or messages, failure to comply with policy and requests by staff including leashing/restraining your pets, etc., any other objectionable behavior that disrupts our business and disturbs our veterinarians, staff members, clients and/or their pets.  We are committed to provide you with courteous services and exceptional medical care.  Our team shares the same expectations to treat you with respect at all times. In the event you feel we did not meet this expectation, please ask to speak with our Hospital Manager to discuss the situation. Prescriptions and Refills Keeping your pet on their regularly scheduled medication routine is important, and we ask that you plan ahead and provide ample time for refill requests.  If you have refills available (see number of refills on prescription label) a 24 hour turn around is reasonable.  If you do not have any refills available we need to work with your pet's veterinarian for an authorization.  At a minimum, 72 hours is requested for requests without refills available as your pet's veterinarian may only be in the office 3-4 days per week.  A $10 rush fill fee will be applied to your account if an adequate request time is not provided.   Dispensed products and medications are ineligible for return once they leave the hospital. If you are uncertain about starting a new medication, or wish to price shop through another source, please discuss this with a member of our team. All sales are final. Each pet is unique in how he or she processes and absorbs food. It usually takes a close working relationship with a veterinarian to develop a diet protocol appropriate for a pet’s age, gender, activity level, body condition, and any medical issue that he or she might currently be experiencing.  We will work with you to find the right diet for your pet, and to help facilitate a safe transition or supplemental program. Sit. Heal. Come. Sit. Heal. Come. Sit. Heal. Parasite Prevention Prevention is Best Parasite prevention for your pet is a year round priority. Exposure to fleas, ticks, mosquitos, and intestinal worms can cause illness for both you and your pets. The right prevention and regular testing should be enough to keep your pet protected. External Parasites Did you know that many over the counter topical products available for flea and tick prevention are no longer considered effective?  We can prescribe a variety of products, both topical and oral, that will protect your pet year round. The oral formulations are made into treat forms to make monthly administration very easy. Some products, like Bravecto, are effective for 12 weeks, meaning you only have to administer 4 times per year. These products offer an easy way to avoid preventable flea and tickborne illnesses. Heartworm Prevention Despite high susceptibility in pets, heartworm is avoidable with regular and consistent monthly administration of preventatives. It is important to have your pet tested for heartworm disease prior to starting preventatives. These products are prescription only and require a wellness exam at least every 12 months for continued refills. You can read about guidelines for treatment as outlined by the American Heartworm Society on their website .  Internal Parasites As part of your pet's annual wellness examination, we recommend internal parasite testing. An easy way to check for internal parasites is performing a simple fecal test. We recommend yearly testing even if your pet is not symptomatic. Just bring a fecal sample to your appointment and we will take care of the rest. Some parasites are zoonotic, meaning it can be transmitted between species, e.g. from your pet to you. Catching an infection and treating it appropriately will keep you and your pet healthy.  Purchasing Preventatives We carry a range of products in our hospital. If your preferred preventative is not available from our in house pharmacy, you can place an order through our online pharmacy. Most products are prescription only and require a wellness exam at least every 12 months for continued refills Shop Now 373 West Portal Ave | San Francisco, CA 94127 | (415) 742-5961 | [email protected] Copyright © 2022 Healthy Pets Veterinary Hospital - All Rights Reserved. Sit. Heal. Come. Sit. Heal. Come. Sit. Heal. Dental Care Comprehensive Oral Health Care No one likes to go to the dentist, and it’s especially true about kids and pets. Fortunately, most parents can talk to their kids into flossing and brushing. Pets, on the other hand, need a little more supervision in the area of oral hygiene.    Dental disease, including periodontitis, gingivitis, enamel damage, and tooth decay, is by far the most common medical problem for pets. This is largely caused by the standard diet: foods rich in carbohydrates, usually offered as a dry kibble.      Pets with severe dental disease typically act normally, including eating and chewing. The first sign for owners is usually the smell, which results from inflamed gums and bacterial overgrowths in the mouth. Having bad teeth has significant consequences on the overall health of your pet.       Anesthetic Dentistry We offer our clients options for taking care of their pets' teeth and gums. One solution to remove the dental tartar is ultrasonic scaling under general anesthesia. It is fast and effective, and the teeth are polished afterwards with a high-speed polisher to smooth out any abrasions to the enamel. Dental radiographs (xrays) are completed to evaluate the teeth below the gumline. The space under the gumline is explored to check for pockets or exposed roots. Anesthesia allows for detailed examination of the mouth, including checking for tonsillitis, mouth polyps and tumors, and any loose or decayed teeth that may need to be extracted. If extractions are needed, the roots are gently loosened up, and the sockets stitched up with absorbable suture.    Anesthetic dentistry is the gold standard for comprehensive oral heath care.  We encourage you to discuss regular dental cleanings with your veterinarian. Anesthesia-Free Procedures Another solution utilized by our veterinarians involves working with technicians specifically trained in anesthesia-free procedures. The anesthesia-free procedures provide a safe, gentle, and affordable way to have your pet’s teeth cleaned. The procedure involves manual scaling of all exposed surfaces of the teeth and of the crevice between the tooth and the gum, as well as polishing of exposed enamel.  As your pet is not anesthetized for this procedure a comprehensive oral exam and dental radiographs are not possible with this service.   Non-anesthetic dentals are priced based on frequency of maintenance cleaning. Maintenance must be completed at our hospital for discounted pricing. Anesthesia-free procedures are only available to existing patients that are current on their wellness exam requirements. New patients must first establish care before booking a procedure. Learn more about anesthesia free dental options on the Animal Dental Care website .   Our anesthesia-free dental services are popular, most appointments are booked through the end of the year.  Existing clients can be placed on a waitlist.  Alternative routes to care would be through https://www.pettooth.com/appointments . Which Dental Service Is Right for Your Pet? Some pets are not good candidates for anesthesia, while others are not comfortable being handled for anesthesia free cleanings.  Our veterinarians will work with you to help you decide the approach that is right for you and your pet upon examination.   Veterinary Oral Health Council There are a lot of products marketed to help keep your pet's oral health in top share.  Visit the VOHC website for a list of recommended products and to read up on ways to support your pet's oral health care.  373 West Portal Ave | San Francisco, CA 94127 | (415) 742-5961 | [email protected] Copyright © 2022 Healthy Pets Veterinary Hospital - All Rights Reserved. Sit. Heal. Come. Sit. Heal. Come. Sit. Heal. Sick Patient Exams It can be scary and cause great concern when our pets are not feeling well. Our veterinarians and support staff have been caring for sick patients for many years. We care deeply about the human-animal bond, and see your pet as an extension of your family. For evaluation of new symptoms, changes in behavior, accidents or injuries, give us a call to book an appointment. We want to be here for your pet beyond routine wellness care. Uncertain if something is off?  Our team can help triage the situation and get a note to our vets for advise. If there is something we can recommend to help at home, we will. If the vet recommends a visit, we will look for an appointment within their recommended time frame. If we are unable to accommodate your pet as urgently as needed, we will provide you with urgent care recommendations in the Bay Area. Advise can only be provided to existing patients with a current wellness exam completed within the last 12 months. Patients on the waiting list to establish care are not eligible for this service. We would recommend contacting your existing veterinarian or visiting an emergency or urgent care facility.  Wellness Exams Preventative Medicine is Key Regular visits, at least annually, are the best way to stay on top of your pet's health. We are required to perform an in person physical exam at least every 12 months to maintain a veterinarian-client-patient-relationship. Without this VCPR we are unable to make any recommendations, administer treatments, or prescribe medications (including preventatives) for your pet.  Before your pet's visit we will send you an intake form. We request you take a few minutes to fill it our fully and thoroughly. This will ensure that all of your questions and concerns are addressed once you arrive.  During your pet's wellness exam the veterinarian will do a nose to tail physical exam. They will discuss all of your questions and concerns, share with you their physical exam findings, come up with a treatment plan, and set a timeline for the next visit.  We will keep your pet up to date on vaccinations, make recommendations for any routine labwork and/or parasite testing, and ensure you have authorization for an additional year of preventative medications.  Maintaining a routine schedule for examinations allows your veterinarian the chance to pick up on subtle changes throughout your pet's lifetime. As your pet ages your veterinarian may recommend examinations at a more frequent interval. Find the Veterinarian That Is Right for You See our veterinarians page to find one that speaks to you! Sit. Heal. Come. Sit. Heal. Come. Sit. Heal. Microchipping What Is a Microchip? A microchip is a transponder device, about the size of a grain of rice, that is injected under the loose skin between your pet's should blades. It is a quick and minimally invasive process that can be completed at the time of any scheduled visit. It is no more invasive than a vaccination. What Is the Benefit? As noted on the AKC website, one in three pets become lost at some point in their lives. Having a microchip allows any vet office, shelter, or rescue the ability to use a scanner to obtain the unique identifier associated with your pet's microchip. This unique identifier is tied to your contact information making a reunion with your pet all the more likely. Does It Hurt? The initial injection, like any needle prick, will have minor discomfort that will fade away almost as quickly as it comes on. Often times we will do this during your pet's spay or neuter procedure while they are under anesthesia further minimizing any discomfort. How Do I Register the Microchip? It is important that you register the microchip immediately after leaving your veterinarian's office. We will provide you with information to complete registration online. Anytime you relocate or change contact information be sure to update the database information. There is generally a one time fee for registering to the database. Unsure If Yours is Registered? Sit. Heal. Come. Sit. Heal. Come. Sit. Heal. Our History Healthy Pets Veterinary Hospital was founded in August 2010 by Dr. Adam Piaseczny. Dr. Adam had been practicing Western medicine for a couple of years when he started to recognize its shortfalls in dealing with chronic and inflammatory diseases of companion animals. He quickly decided to pursue training in acupuncture, nutrition, and other modalities that aim to correct the imbalance between pets’ internal and external environment as it manifests during the disease process.  After years of providing care to numerous companion pets and consulting pet owners, he began to form a vision for his dream pet clinic. His vision entailed building an integrative pet facility to blend holistic and alternative treatment modalities including acupuncture, diet and nutrition, and herbals—while maintaining access to technology and equipment used in Western medicine.  Dr. Adam wanted to open a veterinary hospital in the West Portal neighborhood of San Francisco because he felt passionately about contributing to the community in which he lives. He also recognized that West Portal had been without a veterinary practice for far too long, despite the large number of cats, dogs, and other pets living in the area. Today, Dr. Adam aims to fill that need for West Portal residents, as well as Bay Area pet owners who are seeking a unique blend of holistic and traditional treatments for their loved ones. 373 West Portal Ave | San Francisco, CA 94127 | (415) 742-5961 | [email protected] Copyright © 2022 Healthy Pets Veterinary Hospital - All Rights Reserved.
